Hear Those Sleigh Bells Ringing: Mariah Carey’s ‘Christmas’ Returns to Billboard Hot 100

Mariah Carey‘s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” the No. 1 hit on Billboard‘s Greatest of All Time Holiday 100 Songs retrospective, jingles back to the Billboard Hot 100.

The modern carol re-enters the Hot 100 (dated Nov. 26) at No. 25 with 14 million official streams (up 48%), 11.5 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 234%) and 1,900 sold (up 34%) in the Nov. 11-17 tracking week, according to Luminate. (A year ago this week, it returned to the chart, dated Nov. 27, 2021, at No. 36 with 11.2 million streams, 8.2 million in radio reach and 2,700 sold.)

The song, originally released in 1994, hit the Hot 100’s top 10 for the first time in December 2017. In December 2019, it ascended to the summit at last, for three weeks that holiday season, becoming the second holiday song ever to reign, after “The Chipmunk Song,” by The Chipmunks with David Seville, spent four weeks at No. 1 beginning in December 1958.

“Christmas” led the Hot 100 for two more weeks in the 2020 holiday season, thus, passing “The Chipmunk Song” for the most for a Yuletide song, and for three more frames over the 2021 holidays, upping its total to eight weeks at No. 1.

“When I wrote [it], I had absolutely no idea the impact the song would eventually have worldwide,” Carey marveled of “Christmas” last year. “I’m so full of gratitude that so many people enjoy it with me every year.”

With its 2019 coronation, Carey claimed her 19th Hot 100 No. 1, extending her mark for the most among soloists and moving to within one of The Beatles’ overall record 20.

Plus, when “Christmas” dominated the Hot 100 dated Jan. 4, 2020, Carey became the first artist to have ranked at No. 1 on the Hot 100 in four distinct decades (the 1990s, 2000s, ’10s and ’20s).

The song has also helped Carey claim the longest span of any soloist topping the Hot 100 – 31 years, five months and a week, dating to her first week atop the chart dated Aug. 4, 1990, with her debut single “Vision of Love” – and swell her total to 87 weeks at No. 1 among all her leaders, the most of any act.

Meanwhile, “Christmas” logs its 52nd nonconsecutive week on the Hot 100, marking Carey’s first title to have totaled a year on the tally. (Next up, her 2005 No. 1 “We Belong Together” spent 43 weeks on the chart.)

In addition to “Christmas,” two other holiday classics make their annual resurgences on the Hot 100: Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” (No. 41; 11.4 million streams, up 68%) and Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock” (No. 50; 10.7 million streams, up 68%). On the Jan. 2, 2021, chart, a one-week record 39 seasonal songs infused the survey.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Anti-Hero,’ Sam Smith & Kim Petras’ ‘Unholy’ Top Billboard Global Charts

Taylor Swift‘s “Anti-Hero” rebounds for a third week atop the Billboard Global 200 chart and Sam Smith and Kim Petras‘ “Unholy” holds at No. 1 for a sixth week atop the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart.

Plus, Meghan Trainor‘s “Made You Look” hits the Global 200’s top 10, soaring from No. 37 to No. 10, and Official HIGE DANdism‘s “Subtitle” reaches the Global Excl. U.S. top 10, jumping 14-10.

The two global charts, which began in September 2020, rank songs based on streaming and sales activity culled from more than 200 territories around the world, as compiled by Luminate. The Billboard Global 200 is inclusive of worldwide data and the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart comprises data from territories excluding the U.S.

Chart ranks are based on a weighted formula incorporating official-only streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of audio and video music services, as well as download sales, the latter of which reflect purchases from full-service digital music retailers from around the world, with sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites excluded from the charts’ calculations.

‘Anti-Hero’ Again Atop Global 200

Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero” rebounds from No. 2 for a third week at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200, with 71.1 million streams (down 12%) and 19,000 downloads sold (down 13%) worldwide in the Nov. 11-17 tracking week.

Sam Smith and Kim Petras’ “Unholy” pushes 4-2 on the Global 200, following four weeks at No. 1 beginning in October; Drake and 21 Savage’s “Rich Flex” falls to No. 3 a week after it launched at No. 1 (when Drake logged eight songs in the top 10); David Guetta and Bebe Rexha’s “I’m Good (Blue)” jumps 11-4, after reaching No. 2; and Rema and Selena Gomez’s “Calm Down” soars to the top five (20-5), surpassing its prior No. 7 high to become each act’s first top five hit since the survey began.

Plus, Meghan Trainor’s “Made You Look” leaps 37-10 on the Global 200, with 35.8 million streams (up 17%) and 12,000 sold (up 18%). The song’s profile has swelled thanks to its prominence on TikTok (with the platform not presently reporting directly to Billboard‘s charts). The single is from the Nantucket, Mass., native’s fifth LP, Takin’ It Back, released in October, and marks her first Global 200 top 10 since the chart originated.

Smith & Petras Continue at Global Excl. U.S. Peak

Sam Smith and Kim Petras’ “Unholy” adds a sixth nonconsecutive week at No. 1 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart, with 55.2 million streams (down 5%) and 6,000 downloads sold (down 3%) in territories outside the U.S. in the Nov. 11-17 tracking week.

Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero” keeps at No. 2 after two weeks at No. 1 on Global Excl. U.S.; David Guetta and Bebe Rexha’s “I’m Good (Blue)” is steady at No. 3, after hitting No. 2; Rema and Selena Gomez’s “Calm Down” ascends to the top five (6-4), becoming, as on the Global 200, each artist’s first top five Global Excl. U.S. top five hit since the chart began; and Manuel Turizo’s “La Bachata” repeats at No. 5, after reaching No. 3.

Additionally, Official HIGE DANdism’s “Subtitle” reaches the Global Excl. U.S. top 10, climbing 14-10 with 22.5 million streams (up 4%) and 16,000 sold (up 12%) outside the U.S. The song marks the first top 10 on the chart for the Japanese pop quartet, which previously charted seven entries, hitting a prior No. 26 best with “Mixed Nuts” in April.

Copa del Rave Will Feature Your Favorite DJs Playing Soccer For a Good Cause

As the World Cup kicks off with great fanfare and controversy this week in Qatar, another soccer tournament is getting set to launch closer to home.

Thursday (Dec. 1) will mark the third Copa del Rave, a soccer (ahem, football) tournament in Los Angeles where teams made up of employees from various electronic industry entities will compete for a good cause.

After a two-year hiatus due to COVID, Copa del Rave this year returns with teams from WME, Red Light Management, Symphonic Distribution, CREATE Music Group, Your Army, Flaunt Magazine, INF+MOUS (INFAMOUS/2+2 Mgmt) and Kappa. The winning team will not only take home the trophy but have the honor of selecting the charity that will receive this year’s minimum $12,000 donation.

The day-long tournament is happening at Evolve Project in L.A.’s Frogtown neighborhood from 3-10 p.m., with DJ players including Ardalan, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Borgore, Zomboy and Mary Droppinz, with more to be announced. The tournament is free for all to attend, with a spectator donation requested.

The first two installments of Cope del Rave, both in 2019, featured star players including Diplo, GG Magree and The Chainsmokers and raised over $30,000 for Give a Beat and MusiCares, a Recording Academy organization that “provides a safety net of critical assistance for music people in times of need,” covering “financial, medical and personal emergencies.”

The eight teams competing during the tournament’s triumphant 2022 return will attempt to win the trophy away from current Copa del Rave champions, Red Light Management.

JoJo Siwa Says She Hasn’t Spoken to Candace Cameron Bure: ‘I Don’t Think We Ever Will Again’

Not making up any time soon. JoJo Siwa addressed her lingering drama with Candace Cameron Bure while attending Elton John‘s final U.S. tour date in L.A. on Sunday (Nov. 20).

“We have not [talked], and I don’t think we ever will again,” the Nickelodeon alum told People after calling the older actress out for her recent anti-LBGTQ+ comments involving her move from Hallmark to the Great American Family network.

“That’s what’s f—ed up,” Siwa continued. “You not liking gay marriage, do your thing girl. You being religious, do your thing girl. Of course, I would want everybody to do what they want to do. But to purposely exclude someone because of who they love, that’s sh—y.”

The latest beef between Siwa and Bure follows the one-time Dance Moms star referring to the latter as the “rudest celebrity [she’s] met” as part of a TikTok challenge last July. That revelation then turned into a public back-and-forth between the two, including a phone conversation that quickly devolved into a case of she said-she said.

At Sir Elton’s show, Siwa also reflected on how she’s come into her own as a prominent voice in the LGBTQ+ community. “As I’m getting older, I’m starting to realize what an impact I really do get to have,” she said. “I think that’s a really cool position to be in. I am being honest and maybe being a little disruptive to somebody’s life, but it’s what I believe in. And so to have good people stand behind you with it felt really nice.”

Opening with spacious, eerie echoes, “La Femme Fantasique” quickly shifts into chilly electro territory with a relentless throb. It’s a highlight from Honey Dijon’s knockout new LP Black Girl Magic, and while the title might be French, this collab between the London-based Josh Caffe and Dijon (who splits her time between NYC and Berlin) is fit for any dancefloor around the world still bumping past closing time. – JOE LYNCH

Fana Hues, “Float”

Cigarettes After Sex, “Pistol”

It’s been a long time coming for a new Cigarettes After Sex single, but new song “Pistol” was certainly worth the wait. Exclusive Cast Portraits With the Stars of ‘Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin’

The Pitch Perfect spin-off series Bumper in Berlin is just days away from its Peacock premiere on Wednesday (Nov. 23), and to celebrate, the cast of the comedy musical show joined Billboard for an exclusive photo shoot.

Adam Devine (Bumper himself) along with co-stars Sarah Hyland, Jameela Jamil and Lera Abova and executive producer Elizabeth Banks all posed for sleek individual photos and sweet group snaps.

In the upcoming series, which will be unveiled on NBC’s streaming service just in time to binge-watch on Thanksgiving, Devine reprises his role as Bumper Allen, the former leader of the Treblemakers. He gets a call from Pieter from Pitch Perfect 2‘s Das Sound Machine (played again by Flula Borg) inviting him to come to Germany to launch his music career after a video of his went viral on the Internet. Devine then reunites with his Modern Family co-star Hyland, who plays his assistant. Abova plays Pieter’s sister, a DJ named Lina, while Jamil is the extravagant German pop star Giselle.

“We wanted to honor The Barden Bellas and the Pitch Perfect world, while expanding into a fresh and brilliantly weird character journey,” Banks previously shared of the series in a press statement. “This story is about second chances, friendship, and the idea that your dreams can come true in unexpected ways – anywhere in the world, at any point in your life.”

Jay-Z, Michael Jackson, Elton John & More Songwriters Who Received 2 Grammy Nods for Song of the Year in the Same Year

In the 65th Annual Grammy nominations, which were announced last week, Jay-Z is competing with himself for song of the year. He is nominated for co-writing his wife Beyoncé’s “Break My Soul” and also DJ Khaled’s “God Did,” on which he is one of the featured artists.

Two songwriters – Brandi Carlile and D’Mile – achieved double nominations for song of the year last year – when the Recording Academy expanded the number of nominations in this category to 10. The expansion obviously makes it easier to achieve double nominations. Still, at this point, the list of songwriters with two songs nominated for song of the year in the same year is fairly exclusive – just 12 individual songwriters or songwriting teams have accomplished the feat.

Three songwriting teams have done this – Burt Bacharach & Hal David, Dino Fekaris & Freddie Perren and Elton John & Tim Rice. John and Rice are also the only songwriters who were born outside of the U.S. who have done it.

Carlile is the only female songwriter who has done it.

Three songwriters — Jimmy Webb, Bobby Russell and Michael Jackson — have achieved the feat with a pair of songs they wrote entirely by themselves – a practice that has fallen out of fashion.

Webb is the youngest songwriter to achieve the feat. The prodigy was just 21 when he did it. The oldest? Johnny Mercer, who was 54.

We’ll find out if either of Jay-Z’s songs wins for song of the year on Feb. 5, 2023 when the 65th annual Grammy Awards are presented at Crypto.com Arena (formerly Staples Center) in Los Angeles.

GloRilla: November’s R&B/Hip-Hop Rookie of the Month

Seven months ago, 23-year-old Tennessee native Gloria “GloRilla” Woods exploded onto the hip-hop scene with “F.N.F. (Let’s Go),” a bass-knocking track that became a summer anthem as well as a Grammy contender (the breakout hit is nominated for best rap performance at the 2023 Grammy Awards).

She was discovered by producer Hitkidd a few years ago at a local showcase. After contributing to Megan Thee Stallion’s Something for the Hotties, he continued working with the Houston rapper on a new project. Around April, Hitkidd found himself with a beat on his hands, but felt it was “too hard” to be waiting on Megan — so he passed it along toGloRilla.

GloRilla admitted to Billboard that she “was on the toilet and gonna get my lashes done” when he called. “I did tell her, ‘We need a summer anthem, something the girls can chant,’” said Hitkidd. The pair then met in the studio. GloRilla stepped out for a moment to smoke some Backwoods cigars and then she came up with “I’m F-R-E-E, f–k n—- free.” Within 30 minutes, GloRilla and Hitkidd had a soon-to-be-hit on their hands.

The song finds GloRilla no longer worried about her troubles with a man, instead enjoying a good time with her “rachet a– friends.” On April 29, 2022, GloRilla dropped a music video to go along with the song that has so far accumulated over 46 million views on YouTube. The song became the rising star’s first No. 1 on the Mainstream R&B/Hip Hop AirPlay and is still in the top 10 on that chart.

In June, she and Hitkidd earned their first Hot 100 hit as “F.N.F. (Let’s Go)” logged in at No. 91 and then reached No. 75. The track went on to earn 43.2 million official on-demand U.S. streams through July 7, according to Luminate. GloRilla rode the momentum from “F.N.F.” to a deal with Yo Gotti’s CMG Imprint.

And she didn’t stop there.

After her hit made waves on the hip-hop scene, GloRilla went on to release “Blessed” featuring her mentor, Yo Gotti. She followed up with “Tomorrow,” which was remixed as “Tomorrow 2” with Cardi B. The remix added another achievement to GloRilla’s belt, logging in at No. 3 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and No. 9 on the Hot 100 back in early October; “Tomorrow 2” also landed GloRilla a performance slot at the 2022 American Music Awards, where Cardi B made a surprise appearance.

Billboard spoke with November’s R&B/Hip-Hop Rookie of the Month GloRilla about doing a record with Cardi B, maintaining friendships in the music business and more.

How did you and Cardi B link up for “Tomorrow 2”? I heard she showed you a lot of love in the DM when “F.N.F.” came out!

Actually, my team, Gotti and them. They had already reached out to her. I didn’t know. That was a surprise me to find out that she was on the song. They had already had it in the works and everything, but I didn’t know about it. They were going to surprise me. And so, I texted her one day. I was just in the studio. I had made another song. I had DM her, like, “I got another song for you.” She was like, “Oh, girl I already recorded my verse for ‘Tomorrow.’” I was like, “No way.”

In September, you and Cardi B hit the No. 1 spot for “Tomorrow 2” on Apple Music, and you guys also landed on No. 3 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart. How does that feel?

It ain’t nothing but getting blessed and hard working.

You always have your friends with you from Gloss Up, Slimeroni, Aleza, Nicki Pooh, Teezy, and the list goes on. How do you keep such a tight bond with your friends — specifically with Gloss Up — without letting envy, jealousy and ego get in the way?

It’s really just keeping it real, you know what I’m saying? I always say what’s on your mind. Don’t keep nothing secret. Really, keeping the same attitude, same outlook on loyalty that I been had before everything.

Let’s talk about the mentorship you’ve received from Gotti. What’s the best advice he’s given you?

Don’t get too comfortable.

Where do you see yourself among the female rap landscape knowing that there’s so much beef and competition among each other?

I see myself at the top and getting bigger.

You talked about almost shooting your ex during an interview for Bootleg Kev back in August. Is that who you made “F.N.F.” for?

I really just made the song off of being high, and that came with the pain and all of that.

How do you feel about people talking about you getting plastic surgery?

What people say doesn’t affect me. It’s all about what I want to do. As of now, I’m comfortable in the skin I’m in… and I’m already thick. I’m thick as f–k. It’s all about self-love. You can’t let nobody else determine how you feel about yourself.

Describe your sound.

I’d say crunk, and dominant. I have a dominant sound.

How have things changed for you since becoming a star? Do you find it harder to keep up with demands of the music industry?

I do see a lot of things different from just trying to make it. Nowadays, I have finally got into the industry and a lot of things are different. But I still feel like at the end of the day, you got to work, you got to put in and work, no matter what. You can’t be fake. Everybody got to work. Nothing coming to you free, really.

Do you feel like you have rid yourself of the one hit wonder tag or do you believe you have more to prove?

You know, I never felt like I was a one hit wonder, but I know a lot of people was saying that. But everything I’ve been dropping, people be messing with. They’re like, “Oh, okay,” so I feel like I have done it, but I still feel like I got way more. I want like 100 plaques, 100 No. 1s.

What are you most proud of to date?

Making it, really. Being able to… You know what I’m saying? Put other people on. Put my folks on, take care of my family. I really feel like I helped break a door down for my people.

Who do you listen to the most to draw inspiration from?

Chief Keef.

Who would you like to work with or collaborate with next?

Oh I’d say, Beyonce, Lil Wayne, what else? Who else? And Durk!

Lastly, what do you want fans to know about GloRilla as it pertains to your music?

That I’m really versatile. They’re going to see a lot of that as time goes by!

Adele’s Las Vegas Residency: See the Stunning Photos

Adele made her triumphant debut in Las Vegas over the weekend, performing the first two shows of her Weekends With Adele residency at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace on Friday and Saturday nights. Billboard was inside for night 1 on Friday (read our full review here), so we thought it was only fair to bring you inside too with photos from the concert.

In the pictures below, Adele stuns in her weekend 1 look: a black-velvet off-the-shoulder gown with a drop-waist sash designed by Daniel Roseberry for Schiaparelli Haute Couture. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the superstar’s stylist, Jamie Mizrahi, revealed that she’ll wear a different black gown every weekend of the residency, which goes through March. “We’re open to embellishment and accents of color, but everything will be a black gown to the floor — except special shows, like New Year’s Eve,” Mizrahi told WSJ. (Adele just added a pair of New Year’s Eve weekend shows to her lineup on Sunday.)

The photos capture a few of the biggest moments from the concert, including the jaw-dropping production for “Set Fire to the Rain,” which features rain pouring down across the stage as a white grand piano becomes engulfed in flames. You can also see some of the emotional show’s comic relief, like when Adele fires autographed T-shirts into the crowd — complete with a handwritten note and a $50 bill — from her stadium-worthy T-shirt gun. And you can also see Adele sauntering through the crowd, as she asks fans for their favorite moments from their childhood and then performs her nostalgic 25 single “When We Were Young.”

Pantera Post Pics From Reunion Rehearsals: ‘So Much Heart and Soul Is Going Into It’

Pantera fans are getting psyched for the upcoming reunion of the beloved thrash metal icons. The group’s first major tour in more than 20 years will kick off in South America on Dec. 2 when they play at the Hell & Heaven Metal Fest in Texicoco, Mexico and over the weekend we got the first look at the new-look lineup of the group.

Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante — who is filling-in for late original Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul — posted a pic of their reunion rehearsals on Sunday that featured him jamming in the studio with longtime Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde, who will be playing late guitarist Dimebag Darrell’s parts. Also in the candids were longtime bassist Rex Brown and vocalist Phil Anselmo.

“2 weeks in NOLA with these boys, it’s been a lot of work but how could it not?,” Benante wrote. “So much heart and soul is going into it. This is all about the Love for Vinnie and Dime, the fans and the music that these 4 created.” Charlie said he’s really enjoying playing the songs, which he promised “sound Great! It’s very emotional and it’s just starting to hit me… see you soon, I need a drink.”

Pantera is one of the most successful and influential bands in metal history, combining elements of hardcore and thrash to create a menacing sound anchored by late brothers Vincent “Vinnie Paul” Abbott on drums and “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott on guitar; the reunion tour was given the green light by both mens’ estates. The group broke through after the release of their fifth album, 1990’s Cowboys from Hell, with then-new singer Anselmo and the 1992 follow-up, Vulgar Display of Power. “Dimebag” Darrell was murdered in 2004 while performing on stage during a show with his band Damageplan in Columbus, Ohio, while Vinnie died in 2018 from natural causes including heart disease.

In addition to the shows in Latin America and Mexico, Pantera are playing three Knotfests (in Colombia, Chile and Brazil), as well as a run of European festivals in 2023.
