Paramore Tease ‘The News’ Single By Mailing CD to Fan

Paramore peeled back another layer of their upcoming This Is Why (Feb. 10) album on Thursday (Dec. 1) when the Hayley Williams-led band posted a snippet of the song “The News.” on TikTok. The 14-second clip was accompanied by an image of a pair of hands writing the song’s title on a burned CD and then placing it in a package addressed to fan who goes by “GWizzle.”

The accompanying mid-tempo track features jazzy drums and Williams crooning “turn off… the news.” In response, GWizzle then posted a video in which she is listening to the snippet of “The News” before being interrupted by a knock the door, only to find the aforementioned package featuring the CD. “I can’t, I can’t be the only one,” she says with trepidation after putting the disc in her boombox and hovering over the play button. She then walks away as the screen promises that the first listen of “The News” will take place on TikTok at 8 p.m. ET on Friday night.

In another video, GWizzle stares in awe as the CD is addressed on the other side of the split screen, dramatically dropping vinyl copies of all the band’s albums before running off.

In addition, the group’s Instagram teased the Feb. 8 release date for the song with a picture taken by drummer Zac Farro of Williams seated on a red carpeted floor in front of a white door. Williams, Farro and guitarist Taylor York will launch a 2023 arena tour in support of their sixth full-length album on May 23 with a show in Charlotte, N.C.; they will also join Taylor Swift on a number of dates on her 2023 Eras North American stadium tour.

The band’s first LP in almost six years includes the lead single/title track, which dropped in September.

First Country: Morgan Wallen, Jelly Roll, Adeem the Artist & More

First Country is a compilation of the best new country songs, videos & albums that dropped this week.

Morgan Wallen, One Thing at a Time — Sampler

Morgan Wallen has released a three-song sampler as a teaser for the new music he’s been working on in the studio. One Thing at a Time — Sampler is made of the tracks “One Thing at a Time,” “Tennessee Fan,” and “Days That End in Why.” He’s at the top of the Billboard Country Airplay chart with “You Proof,” while another Wallen song, “I Thought You Should Know” is in the top 25 on the same chart. “One Thing at a Time” teems with shades of ’80s pop, as he declares he knows he should give up booze, pills, cigarettes and the memory of her, but he knows he’s only gonna “quit one thing at a time.” In “Tennessee Fan,” he revels in making a Tennessee fan out of an Alabama girl who was “raised Roll Tide.”

Jelly Roll, “She”

Through singles like as “Son of a Sinner” and “Dead Man Walking,” Jelly Roll has crafted a slate of songs that affirm and uplift people struggling with addiction and temptation, who are looking for forgiveness and hope. His new song, which he’s a co-writer on, traces a young woman’s descent from “the life of the party” into a journey with pill addiction. His burly, everyman vocal approach rings with authenticity.

Adeem the Artist, White Trash Revelry

On this stellar album, the Tennessee-based, non-binary and pansexual artist blends classic country instrumentation with a rough-hewn voice and plainspoken, keen observations about the insidiousness of local politics (“We’re gonna run this town straight into the godd–n ground/ But we’re gonna run it,” they sing in the honky-tonk shuffle “Run This Town”), rising rents and overworked residents (alongside pedal steel in “Books & Records”), and the experience of shifting liberal perspectives in the South (the bluesy “Redneck, Unread Hicks,” with piercing lyrics about “Singing ‘Black Lives Matter’ to a Jimmie Rodgers melody,” and a backyard celebration with two wedding gowns). On “Middle of a Heart,” they sing about learning to “put a bullet through the middle of a heart,” first while learning to hunt, then sharing the passion of a first kiss, and later while in service to the military. The closer, “My America,” wrestles with the kind of country they will leave behind when they are gone.

Jenny Tolman, “It’s a Boy”

Tolman, known for plucky, quirky songs including “High Class White Trash” and the concept project There Goes the Neighborhood, wrote this track with co-writer Corey Wagar after finding out she and husband Dave Brainard were expecting a son. This sweet ode to motherhood takes familiar phrases that pepper songs about pining over a romantic crush and reinterprets them, in light of the joy of soon welcoming her son.

Parker McCollum, “Stoned”

In this moody track, Parker McCollum’s feeling misunderstood, alone and missing the one he used to hold — all reasons to find a way to numb the emotional pain. “Well, I know it’s not the answer but it’s all I know to do,” McCollum declares, his flawlessly rendered vocal capturing both urgency and resignation.

Lainey Wilson, “New Friends”

Wilson recently made her acting debut on season 5 of the hit TV series Yellowstone and performed this new song as part of the show. Her warm, intimate voice purrs on the soft acoustic track, which finds her longing for both a lost love and something to provide a distraction from the heartbreak. “New Friends” has been newly added to her excellent October album, Bell Bottom Country.

Shane Profitt, “Country Boys”

A rapid-fire beat under shimmering guitars sets the tone for Profitt’s listing of all the ways country boys will continue to be country boys — and the requisites to do so, including tins of Skoal, beer cans, Texaco, Walmart, Dollar General, hunting dogs, Zebcos, and deer in the woods. The song’s premise is nothing new, but Profitt sings it with gusto and exudes personality.

Muscadine Bloodline, “Made Her That Way”

Duo Charlie Muncaster and Gary Stanton earned a breakthrough with their raging “Dispatch to 16th Avenue” and hard-charging “Me on You.” They shift toward self-recriminating regret in their latest release, acknowledging the stubbornness that led to a fizzled relationship. This stripped-down song, written by Muncaster and Jordan Fletcher, proves to be another ace outing from this duo.

Harry Styles Honors Christine McVie by Covering Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Songbird’: Watch

Harry Styles had the perfect way of honoring the memory of Christine McVie, the Fleetwood Mac singer and songwriter who died at age 79 on Wednesday (Nov. 30): by singing — and singing her most famously beautiful song at that.

The day after it was announced that McVie had died following a short illness, Styles, who was performing a concert in Chile, carved room into his Love On Tour setlist to sing a gorgeous acoustic version of the ballad with his band. The “As It Was” singer played guitar and sang lead vocal on “Songbird,” backed by a piano and singers providing harmonies.

After the song was over, he blew a kiss up to the sky.

McVie’s death was first announced in a devastating statement posted to social media by the two-time Grammy winner’s family. “She was in the company of her family,” it read. “We kindly ask that you respect the family’s privacy at this extremely painful time, and we would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being, and revered musician who was loved universally.”

Styles, who’s long been vocal about how strongly Fleetwood Mac has influenced his musicianship, is just one of many artists honoring McVie following her passing. Sheryl Crow, Duran Duran and more have all taken to social media to mourn the singer-songwriter, along with McVie’s former bandmates.

“A few hours ago I was told that my best friend in the whole world since the first day of 1975, had passed away,” wrote Stevie Nicks in an emotional post on Twitter. “See you on the other side, my love. Don’t forget me.”

Lindsey Buckingham also shared a message about McVie on social media, writing that her sudden passing was “profoundly heartbreaking.” “Not only were she and I part of the magical family of Fleetwood Mac, to me Christine was a musical comrade, a friend, a soul mate and a sister,” he wrote. “I feel very lucky to have known her. Though she will be deeply missed, her spirit will live on through that body of work and that legacy.”

Mariah Carey Gives Stamp of Approval to David Beckham Singing ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’

She approves! David Beckham was caught singing “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” but got nothing but love from Mariah Carey for his spot-on vocals.

The soccer star’s wife, Victoria Beckham, posted the video on her Instagram page on Thursday (Dec. 1), capturing the soccer star singing along to the Christmas classic under his breath while enjoying a beverage. In the clip, he only realizes she’s recording toward the end of the famous intro line, when he drops an octave and Posh Spice jokes, “You’re struggling with that high note, aren’t you?”

After flashing the camera a grin, Beckham then busts out a gloriously pitch-perfect “you-uuu” just to prove his pop star wife wrong, with the Spice Girl ultimately captioning the moment, “@davidbeckham giving us his best @MariahCarey.”

Of course, the Queen of Christmas watched the video herself and pronounced it “My new fave rendition” in the comments section, adding a sweet “love you guys!” to the Beckhams.

Mariah’s perennial Christmas hit made its now-annual return to the Billboard Hot 100‘s top 10 this week, bounding to No. 5 ahead of fellow holiday tracks such as Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock” and Burl Ives’ “A Holly Jolly Christmas.” Meanwhile, the 1994 single also tops the first Holiday 100 of the 2022 Christmas season as well.

While the Elusive Chanteuse readies her upcoming Merry Christmas to All! holiday concerts happening later this month in New York City and Toronto, she’s also partnered with Booking.com for Mariah Carey’s Ultimate Holiday Experience, which will see two lucky fans win a trip to New York to see her in concert, visit her penthouse apartment and more.

Lil Uzi Vert’s ‘Rock’ Crashes Into Top 10 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart

Lil Uzi Vert flies to his first top 10 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs in two years as “Just Wanna Rock” rallies 19-8 on the list dated Dec. 3. The jump comes as the song surges in streaming with residual gains in the week after its music video release.

“Rock” registered 18.1 million official U.S. on-demand streams in the week ending Nov. 24, according to Luminate, up 43% from 12.7 million in the week prior. The new total pushes the track 13-3 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales chart and 22-10 on the all-genre Streaming Songs list. Consumer gains also happen in the sales realm, with “Rock” having sold 1,000 downloads in the same period. Thanks to the purchases, the tune debuts at No. 14 on R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales.

In the airplay market, the third and final metric that contributes to the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, “Rock” arrives on its first radio chart. The single debuts at No. 37 on Rhythmic Airplay after a 72% improvement in plays in the week ending Nov. 27 compared with the prior week. It’s moving toward making landing on the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, as it climbs 33% in weekly plays on that format. (All airplay, regardless of format origin, contributes to a song’s ranking on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.)

With “Rock,” Lil Uzi Vert secures his 12th career top 10 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. He first visited the tier as a featured act on Migos’ “Bad and Boujee,” and last appeared in the area nearly two years ago, in November 2020, on “Drankin n Smokin,” with Future. How Tems Topped Billboard’s First Year-End U.S. Afrobeats Chart

Few artist development stories in the past few years have been as impressive as that of Tems, the Nigerian singer-songwriter whose arresting voice and infectious melodies have wormed their way into the mainstream in her steady, insistent way. Since self-releasing her debut EP, For Broken Ears, in October 2020, Tems has become an in-demand voice for some of music biggest hitmakers, a status that accelerated after her feature on Wizkid’s “Essence,” the song that broke through and established Afrobeats as a genre to be reckoned with on the American charts last summer.

Since then, she’s collaborated with the likes of Drake, Beyoncé and Future, signed to RCA for the release of her second EP, If Orange Was a Place, last September, covered Bob Marley’s “No Woman No Cry” for the Wakanda Forever soundtrack and landed Grammy nominations in back to back years, one for best global recording for “Essence” in 2022; two more for best melodic rap performance and best rap song at the upcoming 2023 Grammys for her feature on Future’s “Wait For U” and another for her guest spot on Beyoncé’s Renaissance. (And, if not for an inexplicable Grammy rule that meant she was ineligible for best new artist due to the “Essence” nomination, even though she was just a featured artist, she would almost certainly be up for that top four honor this year. But we digress.)

This week, Tems’ still-nascent career notched another milestone, as she became the the No. 1 artist on Billboard’s first-ever year-end U.S. Afrobeats Songs Artists ranking, landing four songs in the top 10 of the year-end chart, led by “Essence” but also including her song “Found” feat. Brent Faiyaz and two songs from her debut EP, “Higher” and “Free Mind,” impressive for a two-year-old project in an era when music moves so fast. And that steady ascent to stardom has earned her manager, Muyiwa Awoniyi, the title of Billboard’s Executive of the Week.

Here, Awoniyi breaks down how he’s helped guide Tems to impressive heights, and the strategies that have gotten them to this point. “I have always felt that if you focus on what is important, what feels urgent will take care of itself,” he says. “In this case, focusing on the actual music and her brand appeal, instead of the charts, allowed us to tell an authentic story that people could relate to.”

This week, Tems landed four songs in the top 10 of Billboard’s first-ever year-end Afrobeats chart, the most of any artist, including the No. 1 song, her feature on Wizkid’s “Essence,” which gave her the No. 1 spot on the year-end US Afrobeats Songs Artists ranking. What key decisions did you make to help make this happen?

I have always felt that if you focus on what is important, what feels urgent will take care of itself. In this case, focusing on the actual music and her brand appeal, instead of the charts, allowed us to tell an authentic story that people could relate to. Handling those things properly allowed us to attract people instead of chasing them and as a result, we built organic bonds with so many people as a team. Proper product placement, which in music means the right ears hearing the music, was a very key focus as we moved forward. It was important to utilize our network optimally and align with those that saw our vision — God has been extremely kind on that front. I have met some amazing people who have played parts in making sure Tems’ music gets heard, and the by-product of that has led to so many of her songs achieving great things such as charting on the U.S. Afrobeats Billboard chart and the Billboard Hot 100 as well. All that being said, though, I do my best and leave the rest to the Almighty.

Two of her songs in the top 10, “Higher” and “Free Mind,” are from her 2020 EP For Broken Ears. How have you kept the momentum from that project going over the past few years, particularly in an era when music moves so fast?

The first time I heard “Free Mind,” I actually wept. I knew that song was special and I feel everyone that has heard it probably feels the same way. The nature of the song preserved itself while we, as a team, focused on marketing the record and the EP as a whole. As a manager, being aware of your talent’s unique selling point is very essential and when we finished For Broken Ears we knew we had something special. It was music for those who want to feel. Which is why records like “Higher” got sampled by ATL Jacob for the “Wait for U” track with Drake and Future. I still feel some records will catch on, “Ice T” especially. As for music moving fast? There is a difference between McDonalds and soul food.

The other two songs in the top 10, “Essence” and “Found” feat. Brent Faiyaz, are collaborations. She’s also had some high-profile collaborations with Drake, Future and Beyoncé. How have strategic collaborations helped boost Tems’ career and find new fans?

Collaborations have been very important. I actually feel if artists removed their limiters, some of the most innovative sounds can come from collaborations. Regarding Tems, I wouldn’t say these were “strategic.” Yes we are aware of the exposure collaborating with such huge superstars would bring, but it has to be organic. It has to feel good. It has to feel right. That’s the only way you get records that transcend borders. If not, you just have another song. We have been approached by basically the whole music industry but the collaborations we took, and have taken on, felt right. Expect more.

Tems’ rise has coincided with a growing global appreciation of African music and African artists. How have you guys been able to capitalize on that, and what has that meant for the opportunities you’ve gotten?

When you manage one of the leading artists from our region, you tend to see it all. So capitalizing for us has always been based on where we were, where we are, and where we are trying to go. This is why we started off by not signing a record deal immediately. You cannot fully capitalize if you do not own and owning For Broken Ears has been such a huge blessing. God is good.

Tems has also been nominated at the Grammys for the second year in a row. What does that mean for you guys, and how can you use that to further Tems’ career?

It’s a blessing. It makes us know that we are on the right track. We try not to make accolades define us in any capacity but the feeling of gratitude is always prominent. In terms of furthering her career, this is another page of her story, so we have to be aware to enjoy the moment, but not dwell on it. There are more pages in the book of Tems and we have to keep moving forward ’til the book ends. It’s really just staying focused and putting the work in while keeping God first in all things.

What have you learned about management during your career?

I’ll summarize it with this sentence: I have learned how important it is to gain equity within the hearts of human beings. One must master the art of selflessness. It takes you further than your ego ever would.

Where do you go from here to continue building Tems’ career further?

At the moment? Album mode. We have been working on this for quite a while. It’s her first baby and we all know how important it is for her. So all focus goes into that and then we allow God to take care of the rest. Definitely expect more from us at [my company] The Leading Vibe. We are always working.

Holland Shoots His Shot in First Meeting With Lil Nas X: ‘Please Kiss Me’

Some people like to create lists of “freebies” with their significant others, determining which celebrities they’d be permitted to take a pass at from their partner. Now, we know who would make K-pop star Holland‘s list.

In a short video clip posted to his Twitter in which he tagged Lil Nas X, Holland revealed that he recently metthe two-time Grammy winner for the first time. After asking the interviewer to “just cut” the next part, the star went on to say that he had an idea for how he wanted that meeting to go. “I really wanted to have sex with him,” he said, giggling. “I said ‘hello,’ but he was so busy.”

According to the K-pop crooner, the “Old Town Road” singer did at least say “hi” and offer a quick compliment to Holland, who says he attempted to keep the conversation going. “Lil Nas X told me I have a good hairstyle,” he said. “I told him, ‘Give me a kiss’ or something like that. ‘Please kiss me!’ But, no …”

Billboard has reached out to Lil Nas X for comment.

The openly gay K-pop star made headlines earlier this year after he opened up online about being attacked in Seoul’s Itaewon area in what he described as a “hate crime” after being called a “dirty gay” by his assailant. In an interview with Billboard, the singer said he shared his story because “I want people to recognize the pain as well as the courage that’s allowing me to share my story. I want those who are feeling lonely to be comforted, but I also want people who take things for granted and live without the fear of being attacked to be shocked because these crimes do exist.”

Check out Holland’s recap of his exchange with Lil Nas X below:

After Kanye West Hitler Rant, Pres. Biden Condemns Holocaust Denialism & Antisemitism

Amid a historic uptick in antisemitism in the United States, Pres. Joe Biden tweeted an unequivocal rejection of hate speech and admiration for Nazi leader Adolf Hitler on Friday morning (Dec. 2), less than a day after Kanye West repeatedly told conspiracist Alex Jones: “I like Hitler,” while praising the Nazi regime on Jones’ Infowars talk show.

“I just want to make a few things clear: The Holocaust happened. Hitler was a demonic figure,” Biden tweeted in the statement that did not mention West by name. “And instead of giving it a platform, our political leaders should be calling out and rejecting antisemitism wherever it hides. Silence is complicity.”

The strongly worded statement from Biden also starkly contrasted with the scene last week at Donald Trump’s private Mar-a-Lago resort, where the former one-term president hosted Ye (as Kanye West is now known) as well as far right activist and white nationalist Nick Fuentes, who is known for spewing antisemitic rhetoric. Also present at the lunch that Trump hosted on the high-visibility patio at his golf club was Ye’s apparent 2024 presidential campaign manager and professional right-wing troll Milo Yiannopoulos, who has been blocked from most major social media platforms for his repeated slurs against Islam and feminism and his embrace of antisemitic figures.

In an attempt to tamp down the fierce backlash for the lunch from figures on both sides of the aisle, Trump released a series of statements on his right-wing Truth social platform claiming he “never met and knew nothing about” Fuentes before he was ushered into the club as part of Ye’s entourage despite reportedly not being on the guest list that day.

In contrast to Biden’s full-throated disavowal of antisemitic speech and Nazi fetishizing, Trump has repeatedly equivocated when it comes to condemning hate speech, including failing to denounce the Ku Klux Klan when he was endorsed by its former leader in 2016 and famously blaming “both sides” during the aftermath of a deadly white supremacist protest in Charlottesville in 2017. The lunch came a week after Trump launch his third bid for the White House.

West has been on a month-long media tour that has found the rapper repeatedly spewing hateful rhetoric aimed at the Jewish people that has led to rapid downfall of his once-formidable fashion and music empire, as well as yet another ban from Twitter on Thursday when he posted an image of a swastika.

Ariana Grande & Kelly Clarkson Drop ‘Santa, Can’t You Hear Me’ Live Recording: Stream It Now

Santa’s elves work hard, but Ariana Grande and Kelly Clarkson work harder. On Friday (Dec. 2), the two singers and former Voice coaches released a live recording of their holiday duet “Santa, Can’t You Hear Me,” originally performed last year during Clarkson’s NBC Christmas special.

The new live version of “Santa, Can’t You Hear Me” serves as a follow up to the studio recording featured on Clarkson’s album When Christmas Comes Around…, released in October 2021. Peaking at No. 22 on the Billboard 200, the project marked the three-time Grammy winner’s second holiday record, following 2013’s Wrapped In Red.

The December after When Christmas Comes Around… dropped, Clarkson invited Grande to perform the track with her during her NBC holiday music special, fittingly titled Kelly Clarkson Presents: When Christmas Comes Around. Amy Poehler, Leslie Odom Jr., Jay Leno, Melissa McCarthy and Brett Eldredge were also featured guests on the program, which included several musical performances from the “Stronger” singer.

The audio from this performance is what now serves as the new live edition of “Santa, Can’t You Hear Me.” During the duet last year, Grande and Clarkson wore stunning white and purple gowns, respectively, and sang joyfully together while supported by a shimmering orchestra of string musicians, backup singers, percussionists and brass.

TOMORROW X TOGETHER Works to Separate Dreams From Reality in ‘The Name Chapter’ Concept Trailer: Watch

In November, HYBE CEO Jiwon Park announced during a company briefing that TOMORROW X TOGETHER — which consists of members Yeonjun, Soobin, Beomgyu, Taehyun and Hueningkai — would be back in January 2023 with brand new music. Now, fans are getting the first official taste. On Friday (Dec. 2), the K-pop group dropped a concept teaser for its upcoming album, The Name Chapter.

The Name Chapter concept trailer sees the idols experiencing a series of dreamy events. They first start off in an open-air setting, before introducing a devil-like creature and scenes of the boys being hoisted up on marionette strings. The story concludes with all the members in a house floating in the sky, which gets tilted on an axis and leaves the group with no choice put to jump out into the open air.

The Name Chapter follows TXT’s previous EP installments The Dream Chapter and The Chaos Chapter. It will be the first music release the quintet has dropped since the arrival of its fourth mini EP, minisode 2: Thursday’s Child in May. That project was a hit for the K-pop stars. It spent a total of 14 weeks on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart, where it peaked at No. 4. The mini album achieved even more success on the Top Current Album Sales chart, where it spent 20 weeks on the chart and hit No. 1.

Speaking about Thursday’s Child in a May interview with Billboard, Soobin looked ahead to the future. “As we have more years and even more albums under our belts, we’re getting better outcomes and better numbers,” he said. “We have [also] tried many genres in music. As we work on more and more albums, [I feel like] we don’t have any limits. We’ve taken this musical journey step by step.”

Watch the The Name Chapter concept teaser in the video above.
