Tyga, Jhene Aiko & Pop Smoke Bring ‘Sunshine’ to No. 1 on Rhythmic Airplay Chart

The combined might of Tyga, Jhene Aiko and the late Pop Smoke yields a new No. 1 on Billboard’s Rhythmic Airplay chart with their collaboration, “Sunshine.” The song jumps from No. 4 to lead the list dated Dec. 17 after a 7% jump in weekly plays that made it the most-played song on U.S. monitored rhythmic radio stations in the week ending Dec. 11, according to Luminate.

“Sunshine” gives Tyga his fifth Rhythmic Airplay No. 1, and first time with multiple champs in the same calendar year. The rapper first led through a featured spot on Chris Brown’s “Loyal” (two weeks, 2014), his own “Taste,” featuring Offset (four, 2018), “Chosen,” with Blxst and featuring Ty Dolla $ign (three, 2021) and “Freaky Deaky,” with Doja Cat (one, 2022).

Jhene Aiko collects her fourth career champ. All three of her previous chart-toppers, a guest turn alongside Chris Brown on Omarion’s “Post to Be” in 2015, her own “B.S.” featuring H.E.R. and another supporting spot on Saweetie’s “Back to the Streets” in 2021, all ruled for one week.

The late Pop Smoke, meanwhile, extends his Rhythmic Airplay history to a third No. 1 and third consecutive year with a leading title. He first reigned with “For the Night,” featuring Lil Baby and DaBaby, for five weeks in 2020-21, and returned to the summit with the four-week champ “What You Know Bout Love” in 2021. The latter wrapped 2021 as the Rhythmic Airplay’s top title on the year-end ranking.

“Sunshine” also brings a former 18-year-old champ back into the fray through its sample. The Tyga, Aiko and Pop Smoke track samples the Lil Flip and Lea collaboration of the same name, which topped the Rhythmic Airplay list for one week and reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2004.

As “Sunshine” lights up Rhythmic Airplay, it continues a parade of new No. 1s on the chart. The song is the fifth new leader in the last five weeks, following the one-week reigns, in order, of Doja Cat’s “Vegas,” YG’s “Toxic,” Chris Brown’s “Under the Influence,” and Beyoncé’s “Cuff It.” The last multi-week champ was Nicki Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl,” which strung together a three-week nonconsecutive run on top in October-November. Between Minaj’s second and third weeks in charge, two more songs managed single-week stays at No. 1: DJ Khaled’s “Staying Alive,” featuring Drake and Lil Baby, and Steve Lacy’s “Bad Habit.”

The current turnover is the most since a run of six straight new No. 1s in five weeks in June – July 2019. Then, Khalid’s “Talk” started a procession that included City Girls’ “Act Up,” Travis Scott’s “Wake Up,” Lil Baby’s “Close Friends,” Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts” and Chris Brown’s “No Guidance,” featuring Drake. The lattermost title broke the streak with a second consecutive week on top. (“Truth Hurts” later also returned to the summit for an additional two weeks.)

Elsewhere, “Sunshine” pushes 8-5 on the Rap Airplay chart with a 3% increase in weekly audience and repeats at No. 22 on the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay list through a 3% boost in weekly plays at the format. Thanks to those placements and its rhythmic success, the song debuts at No. 45 on the all-genre Radio Songs chart. There, it climbed 11% to 18.9 million in overall audience.

The video kicks off with classy, film-style footage of fans waiting in line for entrance to the show and posters around the area that reads “Indigo is the wARMYest blue” scattered around near the queue. Fans lucky enough to make it to the show clutch their invitations to the event to their chest, before footage from the concert starts to roll.

RM kicked off the set with “Yun,” which features Erykah Badu. Badu was not in attendance, but the BTS rapper commanded the stage with ease and instantly got the fans in attendance bopping their heads to the song’s chill hip-hop beat.

RM featured the rest of the tracks from Indigo, including “Still Life,” “All Day” and “Lonely” and brought out special guests Paul Blanco for “Closer,” Kim Sawol for “Forg_tful,” Colde for “Hectic” and youjeen for the album’s lead single “Wild Flower.” Closing out the set was two major surprises — his verse on “SEXY NUKIM” by Balming Tiger before concluding the show with “Intro : Persona” from BTS’ Map of the Soul: Persona.

RM’s performance at Rolling Hall is the latest of his Indigo concerts. The BTS rapper also performed tracks from his solo effort for NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series and in a separate concert performance at the Dia Beacon in New York City.

Speaking about Indigo on Suchwita, Suga of BTS’ sit-down talk show, RM said, “It’s been 15 years [since we started pursuing music] and yet in a sense, this is my first album. So after 15 long years I finally have a chance to prove to myself in the form of a solo album. That’s what I felt.”

RM also added that he was happy to have the chance to make a statement about who he is as an artist on Indigo, because “to be honest, in my Mono album, I had doubts and concerns for about half the songs in there, but I don’t think that’s going to be the case for this album.”

The Kristi Jacobson-directed film titled Won’t Be Silent, is set to celebrate music from female artists that have had a global impact on various issues. “The powerful women we will be highlighting are not only talented but have been on the frontline of pushing culture forward and holding a mirror up to political and social injustices,” Gomez said in a statement received by the publication.

“Throughout history, women in music have used their art as activism by bringing attention to issues impacting our nation and world. Won’t Be Silent is a celebration of the artists who have contributed to bettering the world through their timeless music,” Abrams added.

Gomez’ latest effort follows her recent, introspective documentary, AppleTV+’s My Mind & Me,  which details the star’s years-long struggles with mental health, lupus, heartbreak and the highs and lows of fame.

“It’s OK to feel not good enough and to feel like you’re complicated and complex. It’s just about having a healthy relationship with how you talk to yourself, how you seek help, how you talk to other people,” Gomez said at the Los Angeles premiere of the film, of what she hopes people will take from the film. “I hope this starts a chain reaction of people saying, ‘Hey, I want to say something about my mental health. I want to talk about it and seek help.’ That’s one of the bravest things someone can do. Even if just one person is impacted by this film, I would consider myself the luckiest girl.”

Kelly Clarkson Makes a Plea to Santa With Her Latest Christmas Single for ‘Kellyoke’

Kelly Clarkson kept the Christmas spirit flowing on Thursday (Dec. 15) by performing her 2021 holiday song “Santa Can’t You Hear Me” to open The Kelly Clarkson Show.

While she enlisted pal Ariana Grade for the studio version from her second Christmas album When Christmas Comes Around…, the talk show host opted to tackle the ditty by herself, belting out, “Santa can’t you hear me?/ Oh, I don’t need a thing/ I sent a letter to you/ On how to make my dreams come true, oh yeah/ Keep the mistletoe/ Unless below, is what I need/ Oh Santa, can’t you hear me?”

The solo “Kellyoke” number continues Clarkson’s string of performing her own holiday originals, following “Merry Christmas (To the One I Used to Know)” and “Christmas Isn’t Canceled (Just You)” earlier this week. Before that, she handed the mic to Jewel to perform a stirring, jazz-inflected rendition of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” while Clarkson was out sick with COVID.

Clarkson’s been in quite the giving mood on her show thanks to her ongoing holiday gift guide. On Wednesday’s episode, she gave every member of her studio audience an all-expenses-paid trip to Hawaii, with airfare to and from the islands.

In the new year, the superstar is set to return to Season 23 of The Voice after taking a season off for the first time since she joined the show as a coach in Season 14. She’ll be joined by Blake Shelton for his final season before leaving The Voice as well as rookie coaches Niall Horan and Chance The Rapper.

How Ticketmaster Plans to Sell Taylor Swift’s Remaining 170,000 Concert Tickets Over Four Weeks

After massive technical problems marred the Nov 15. pre-sale for Taylor Swift’s Eras tour, forcing some fans to queue for several hours to buy tickets or fail to buy them entirely, Ticketmaster is changing tactics to sell the remaining 170,000 seats for the artist’s 52 shows. The company, hoping to avoid long fan wait times and site crushing web traffic from bots and Swifties, is going back to an older technology: The 20-year-old Ticketstoday platform, modeled after The Grateful Dead’s own fan club system and still used by jam bands like Phish and Ween. The system has been updated in recent years and even deployed for artists like Ed Sheeran and Madonna, although it’s never handled 170,000 tickets for a single sale.

The move, coupled with Ticketmaster’s agreement to not participate in secondary ticket sales for the Eras tour, shows how eager ticketing companies are to work with a mega earner like Swift while avoiding the crush of traffic that disastrously caused widespread disruptions to her Nov. 15 presale. The record-breaking sale is now the subject of multiple congressional inquires around the Live Nation-owned company. These include a request from Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) to Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate the crash and a call from her counterpart on the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Competition Policy, Antitrust and Consumer Rights, Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), to hold a hearing on the “lack of competition in ticketing markets.”

The decision to use Ticketstoday — originally built for Dave Mathews Band’s fanclub platform MusicToday by manager and Red Light Management founder Coran Capshaw in the early 2000s and sold to Live Nation in 2008 — would significantly reduce fan wait times and the potential for another site crash by gating off the most vulnerable parts of the ticketing platform to uninvited fans and bot attacks thought to be responsible for the disruption issues. Instead of making fans queue up again to order their tickets, this will essentially assign tickets to them based on their preferences.

Despite receiving an unprecedented level of negative publicity, Billboard estimates Swift’s Nov. 15 presale generated approximately $554 million in sales for Ticketmaster (which ticketed 47 dates on the Eras tour) and Seat Geek (which ticketed five dates as the primary ticketing company for the Arizona Cardinals and Dallas Cowboys).

The 170,000 remaining tickets not sold during the presale have a cumulative face value worth $37 million, Billboard estimates. Once Swift completes the sale of her remaining tickets for the Eras Tour, Billboard estimates that she will have generated $591 million in the U.S. alone. Based on projection, Taylor would easily capture the title of Billboard Boxscore’s highest-grossing female touring artist of all time, topping the current title holder Madonna who’s Sticky & Sweet Tour (2008-09) currently holds the No. 1 slot grossing $407 million, and the number four slot on the all-times tour chart, currently topped by Ed Sheeran, whose Divide tour from 2017-2019 grossed $776.2 million.

Typically, Ticketstoday helps artists sell a small portion of their available tickets – usually about 8% per show — directly to their most loyal fans, much like a lottery system. Fans receive an email about a limited number of VIP or high demand tickets available for sale for an upcoming show, and then those who want to buy the tickets select a pricing option and provide their credit card information in advance. If there are more fans wanting tickets than tickets available, a digital lottery is held and the fans selected have their credit cards automatically charged.

While Ticketmaster stayed online during the attack and sold a record 2.2 million tickets in 12 hours, the site could barely handle the traffic created by 14 million fans and billions of bots the company claimed hit the site. This system using Ticketstoday will pace out the sales, and they will be processed away from the public, avoiding any similar potential issues. To determine which fans would get to participate in the upcoming sale, Ticketmaster used its Verified Fan platform . Fans who bought tickets to the 2020 Lover Festival, canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, have been prioritized, as well as those who bought select Taylor Swift merchandise, like a “F— the Patriachy” keychain that went on sale in August. Participating fans will be sent an email requesting their credit card number and choice of tour seating options representing various price ranges and seat locations. Ticketmaster will then work to match fans with their purchase request and charge their card on file. The entire process will take about four weeks and is expected to be completed by Dec. 23.
