Justin Bieber Nearing Catalog Sale to Hipgnosis in Deal Worth More Than $200M

Hipgnosis Songs Capital is in talks to buy Justin Bieber‘s interests in his recorded music and publishing catalogs for more than $200 million, with the deal likely to close in the next few days, according to sources. The acquisition would include Bieber’s biggest hits, from “Baby” to “Love Yourself” and beyond.

In correspondence with Billboard in mid-November, Hipgnosis founder and chief executive, Merck Mercuriadis, said the company was working to “close about $500 million in deals between now and mid-December.” Although he did not say what the deals were at the time, the reported Bieber acquisition seems like a possible part of that disclosure. News of the upcoming deal between Bieber and Hipgnosis was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

The incoming deal arrives at the end of a year that saw a cooldown in the music catalog market. Though major acts like Justin Timberlake (who sold to Hipgnosis for $100 million), Sting (who sold to UMPG for an estimated $360 million), Genesis (who sold a package deal to Concord for around $350 million), David Bowie (whose estate sold his publishing catalog to Warner Chappell for $250 million) and more have closed deals in the last twelve months for blockbuster prices, 2022 has been a markedly quieter year compared to the red-hot market of the last half-decade.

“The environment has changed entirely since the end of last year — interest rates are significantly up, currency exchange rates are very different — I don’t think the current market is what it was,” explained Joe Brenner, partner at entertainment law firm Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks, in an interview with Billboard this fall. In a mid-year report to investors, Mercuriadis also admitted this year’s environment has proven more “challenging.” To top it off, Brenner added, there are simply fewer high-dollar classic rock catalogs left to acquire, as many of them have already been sold (Pink Floyd being a notable exception).

Catalogs only a decade or so old, like Bieber’s, are often considered riskier investments than those that have had a longer runway to prove they will stand the test of time, and, as a consequence, they tend to fetch lower sums. However, these younger song collections are often where Hipgnosis chooses to invest its capital. Between the Timberlake catalog purchase this year and other acquisitions like Jack Antonoff, Mark Ronson, Timbaland and more, the company has bet big on buying modern classics to flesh out its over 65,000-song portfolio, which also includes songs by more seasoned icons like Journey, Leonard Cohen and Barry Manilow.

Hipgnosis Songs Capital is an investment vehicle established by Hipgnosis in partnership with Blackstone. The New York-based private equity firm pledged $1 billion to further investment in music IP and also took a majority stake. Hipgnosis Songs Capital is considered separate from the London-listed Hipgnosis Songs Fund, the acquirer of music publishing and recording rights. Additionally, the Mercuriadis-founded company includes Hipgnosis Songs Management, which manages the publicly traded company’s catalog.

Representatives for Hipgnosis and Bieber have not responded to Billboard’s requests for comment.

The new performers include Liily, Fletcher and Dolly Parton, the latter of whom will be co-hosting the event with her goddaughter.

The New Year’s Eve special will also feature special appearances from Saturday Night Live’s Chloe Fineman and Sarah Sherman as well as comedy trio Please Don’t Destroy. Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party is set to air Dec. 31 on NBC live from Miami.

During the “Prisoner” singer’s appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Dec. 11, she previously revealed the first three people scheduled to appear on the special. “Sia is coming. She’s one of my favorite artists,” Cyrus told Fallon. “We have Latto,” she continued, adding that “Rae Sremmurd, who are friends of mine,” will be appearing.

“As we get closer to the show, I want to start revealing who else we have. But the lineup is very me. It is curated in a way that makes no sense, but makes total sense,” Cyrus explained.

The Hannah Montana star got her Smilers excited on Dec. 19 when she tweeted “NEW YEAR, NEW MILEY,” leading some fans to believe a new album will arrive in 2023, though additional details have yet to be confirmed.

JoJo Siwa Shades Avery Cyrus for Using Her After Breakup: ‘There Was Nothing to Gain Anymore’

More shots fired! JoJo Siwa made quite the accusation about her recent breakup with Avery Cyrus in a new TikTok on Tuesday.

Using a viral sound taken from the “My Brother My Brother and Me” YouTube channel, the former Dance Moms star revealed what she was really trying to say onscreen. “But I love you Why are you breaking up with me??!!!” she wrote before offering up two different options: “There’s someone else” and, uh, “You told one of my best friends that you were excited to be dating me bc you’re ‘growing your career and wanna get to the top’…”

By the end of the lip-synced clip, Siwa makes it clear that the reason for her split was, well, not a third party. She also added some dramatic context in the video’s caption, writing, “And when I said I just wanted to be friends so I didn’t lead you on after an unplanned hookup you wanted nothing to do with me because there was nothing to gain anymore.”

The TikTok comes just one day after the Nickelodeon star vented about the breakup in an Instagram Story posted by her mother, Jessalynn Siwa, in which she claimed she “got used…For views and for clout” by the TikToker during their three-month relationship. “I got tricked into being told I was loved and I got f—ing played,” she added.

Though she has yet to offer an opinion on the latest TikTok, Cyrus responded to Siwa’s Instagram accusations, saying she was “saddened and confused by the situation” in a statement to E! News.

How Much Does Mariah Carey Make From ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’?

Mariah Carey, All I Want For Christmas

Mariah Carey’s holiday classic, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” is the gift that keeps on giving for its writers and label. In 2021, the master recording of Carey’s version of her song, co-written with Walter Afanasieff, generated 1.747 million song consumption units in the United States, according to Luminate. Of that, 48,000 were from track downloads, 200 million came from on-demand audio streams, 52.5 million came from video on-demand streams and 24 million from programmed streams.

Combined, those plays and downloads generated $1.36 million for Carey and her label, Sony Music, Billboard estimates.

Meanwhile, the song’s publishing, including mechanicals for the track from the physical sales of the five Carey albums it appears on brought in another $378,000 last year.

However, the United States only accounted for 51% of download sales and 30.7% of on-demand streaming, so when you look at the song globally and take into account a total of 94,000 song downloads and 823 million streams, Billboard estimates that in 2021 the Carey master recording version of the song brought in almost $4.5 million, while its publishing royalties generated another $1.66 million. Combined, that comes to $6.16 million in global revenue and publishing royalties.

Of the master recording revenue, Billboard estimates Carey’s royalties at $1.55 million, which would leave Sony with $2.95 million.

As for publishing, she is one of two songwriters credited on the song —Afanasieff being the other — so if they each wrote 50%, that means that Carey’s share of the publishing would be $830,000. If she owns her publishing, after a 10% administration fee, her take-home pay would be $747,000. If she has a 75/25 co-publishing deal, her share would be just over $622,000; and if she doesn’t own the publishing on that song, her publishing royalties would be about $415,000.

This estimate excludes cover versions of the song and the revenue from whatever financial arrangements were struck for Christmas TV specials and soundtracks from those television shows.

According to Songview, the joint ASCAP and BMI song database system, the publishers for Carey’s holiday staple are Beyondidoliztion and Universal Music, both administered by Universal Music Corp., which probably means Universal Music Publishing Group; Sony/ATV Tunes Inc. and Tavla Vista Music, both administered by Sony Music Publishing; and Hypnosis SFH I Ltd, administered by Kobalt.

Tory Lanez Won’t Testify In Megan Thee Stallion Shooting Trial

Tory Lanez said Wednesday (Dec. 21) that he will not take the witness stand in his own defense in the trial over whether he shot Megan Thee Stallion in the foot, signaling the end of testimony in the week-long trial and setting the stage for jurors to begin deliberating on a verdict.

Putting a defendant on the stand to be cross-examined by prosecutors is a big gamble in any criminal case, and Lanez’s attorneys opted not to do so — resting their case without giving Lanez a chance to personally persuade jurors that he didn’t pull the trigger the night Megan was shot.

“I will not testify,” said Lanez, sitting beside his father, to Judge David V. Herriford.

During Wednesday morning’s proceedings, it was also revealed that Jaquan Smith, Lanez’s driver who was present the night of Megan’s shooting, would similarly not be testifying. Smith, who could have provided eye-witness testimony to the incident, had been present at the courthouse earlier in the day.

With no testimony from Lanez or Smith, both the prosecution and the defense will proceed to make their closing arguments later in the day on Wednesday. After that, the case will be submitted to the jury, with a verdict expected as early as Wednesday evening.

Lanez stands accused of three felony counts over the July 12, 2020 incident, during which prosecutors say he yelled “Dance, b—-” and shot at Megan’s feet, striking her at least once. If convicted on all three counts, he faces up to 22 years in prison. His lawyers have steadfastly maintained his innocence, suggesting throughout the trial that the trigger might instead have been pulled by Kelsey Harris, Megan’s former friend and assistant who was also in the vehicle that night.

Kicking off Dec. 12, the trial has seen gripping testimony from Megan herself, who recounted the alleged shooting, pinned the blame on Lanez and said, “I wish he had just shot and killed me.” Harris — expected to be a star witness for the prosecution — also took the stand, but she largely failed to re-affirm previous statements pinning the blame on Lanez. Then on Friday (Dec. 16), prosecutors played recordings of Harris’ earlier statements, in which she clearly stated that Lanez had shot the Grammy-winning rapper and then tried to buy both women’s silence with million-dollar bribes.

Back in court this week, jurors heard confusing and contradictory testimony from Sean Kelly, a man who allegedly saw the entire incident from his nearby home. Expected to be a key witness for Lanez’s defense team, Kelly told jurors that he saw Harris violently grappling with Megan outside the vehicle, but that he also saw a man matching Tory Lanez’s description holding a gun. Bizarrely, he then later said he never actually saw a gun at all.

Smith, the driver of the vehicle, could have provided additional perspective as the only other person present during the incident — and the only one who has never been suggested to have been involved in the shooting. But like Lanez, he was never placed on the witness stand on Wednesday.

Speaking to Billboard during the recess, Lanez attorney George Mgdesyan said he’d wanted Smith to testify, but that procedural wrangling and the possibility of a delay that could have forced jurors to return after Christmas prevented him from taking the stand.

This is a developing story and will be updated later on Wednesday with more information from the afternoon’s proceedings.

Billboard Airplay Tracking Week to Shift to Friday-Thursday Beginning With Charts Dated Dec. 31

Billboard will shift its airplay chart tracking week for all radio formats to Friday-through-Thursday beginning with Luminate-based charts dated Dec. 31. The schedule will switch from the Monday-through-Sunday tracking week previously used for all individual formats.

The all-format Radio Songs chart, which contributes to the all-genre, multi-metric Billboard Hot 100, already uses a Friday-through-Thursday tracking week, having segued to that schedule in July 2021.

Moving charts to a Friday-through-Thursday tracking period will align airplay with the streaming and sales tracking week, and allow for visible building chart tracking, within Luminate’s Music Connect platform, which operates under that song consumption timeline.

The dates for making the airplay chart tracking week change for all formats are as follows:

Charts finalized Monday, Dec. 19 and updated on Billboard.com Tuesday, Dec. 20 (dated Dec. 24) used data from Monday, Dec. 12 through Sunday, Dec. 18 (marking the last charts reflecting a Monday-through-Sunday tracking week).

Charts finalized Friday, Dec. 23 and to be updated on Billboard.com Wednesday, Dec. 28 (dated Dec. 31) will use data from Friday, Dec. 16 through Thursday, Dec. 22 (marking the first charts reflecting a Friday-through-Thursday tracking week).

The Friday-through-Thursday tracking week will continue to be used for airplay charts finalized Friday, Dec. 30 and to be updated on Billboard.com Wednesday, Jan. 4 (dated Jan. 7), using data from Friday, Dec. 23 through Thursday, Dec. 29, and for each week thereafter.

As previously reported, data and insights company Luminate, which provides data for Billboard’s charts, has partnered with airplay monitoring service Mediabase, and the latter’s radio tracking data began fueling Billboard surveys reflecting airplay activity dated Nov. 12. (Click here for more information, via Luminate, about the BDS/Mediabase transition, for Luminate subscribers with access to Luminate’s Music Connect platform.)

Along with Radio Songs, Billboard’s United States-based airplay charts encompass: Pop Airplay (Mainstream Top 40); Adult Pop Airplay (Adult Top 40); Adult Contemporary; Country Airplay; Rock & Alternative Airplay; Alternative Airplay; Adult Alternative Airplay (Triple A); Mainstream Rock Airplay; R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay; Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay; Adult R&B Airplay; Rap Airplay; Rhythmic Airplay; Latin Airplay; Regional Mexican Airplay; Latin Pop Airplay; Latin Rhythm Airplay; Tropical Airplay; Christian Airplay; Christian AC Airplay; Gospel Airplay; Dance/Mix Show Airplay; Smooth Jazz Airplay; and the seasonal Holiday Airplay chart.

All Billboard charts, viewable here, regularly update on Billboard.com each Tuesday.

Chance the Rapper & Vic Mensa to Bring Free Music Festival to Ghana

When Chance the Rapper visited West Africa earlier this year, he initially thought his trip with fellow Chicago hip-hop artist Vic Mensa would be just another vacation getaway.

Instead, the Grammy winner connected with Mensa’s father’s family in Ghana and other natives from the Motherland on a deeper level. He saw Ghana’s beautiful ocean coastline and waterfalls, engulfed himself in the musical culture and art scene and learned more about the country’s rich history of being the first sub-Saharan African country to free itself from colonialism.

After a couple more trips to Ghana, Chance decided to create a free concert series and visual arts show so others could experience the country’s vibrant culture just like he did. During the summer, Chance and Mensa brought eight students from Chicago to Ghana to learn more about Africa.

“I felt so free in Ghana. .. and I want others to feel the same way,” said Chance, who along with Mensa will host the inaugural Black Star Line festival in Accra, Ghana, in 2023. The weeklong festival will feature events, panel discussions and a free concert on Jan. 6 with performances by Chance, Mensa, Erykah Badu, T-Pain, Jeremih, Sarkodie, Tobe Nwigwe, Asakaa Boys and M.anifest.

The event will be held in Accra’s Black Star Square, a monument to the political freedom that was won by Ghanaians in 1957. The festival’s title was inspired by civil rights leader Marcus Garvey’s Black Star Line, which was founded in 1919 and operated by Black people who helped link global shipping and tourism opportunities between America, the Caribbean and Africa.

Garvey inspired Chance’s music video “ YAH Know, ” featuring King Promise, and his upcoming album “Star Line Gallery,” which is expected for release next year. He’s already released a few other new music videos — such as “ Child of God,” “ A Bar About a Bar ” and “ The Highs & Lows ” with Joey Bada$$ — in which he calls “album art” to highlight popular artists in Africa.

Chance said Naila Opiangah ’s art piece for “Child of God” will be on display at the festival. He said his new “songs are candid realities of Black life.”

“Artists have amazing graphics and album covers and single artworks that are made by great artists every day that’s released,” he said. “But the only time you get to see it is on this little inch-by-one inch depiction of it. These pieces are painted by world class artists. The ability to go see those pieces and interact with them in real life kind of adds people’s understanding of the music.”

Through his festival, Chance says he wants to bridge the gap between Black people abroad and Africa.

“I think that specifically the story of the founder’s independence is something that all black people should know,” he said “There are no free sub-Saharan African countries until 1957. I think they should know about the revolutionary leaders on the continent and abroad. I think that if we had this connectedness and this interaction, people will actually have a chance to see this.”

Initially, it was tough gaining commitments from big-name music artists to travel and perform in West Africa. With few sponsors, much of the expenses to fund the free concert were out-of-pocket.

But Chance’s team found a way to make the trip more affordable for travelers through a partnership with United Airlines, which is offering discount fares to Ghana for a year.

It’s taken a lot of work to organize the event in such a short time, but Chance believes this festival could live on successfully for the next 50 years. In the future, he wants to host the festival in other countries, such as Jamaica and Haiti.

But for now, Chance’s focus has been on attracting more people to Ghana, a place he can envision his family living after his daughters head to college.

“I wish I could live there right now,” said the rapper, who has lived in Chicago his whole life. “I want people to see the convergence and similarities in all of these Black lives.”

Justin Bieber Merch Pulled by H&M After Star Claims Products Were Unauthorized

H&M has reportedly pulled a collection of Justin Bieber-inspired merchandise following the pop star’s claims that the products were not approved.

“Out of respect for the collaboration and Justin Bieber we have removed the garments from our stores and online,” the retail clothing company said in a statement, the BBC reported Wednesday (Dec. 21).

On Monday, Bieber wrote on his Instagram Story that H&M was selling unapproved items featuring his image and song lyrics. The products, which appeared on the company’s website, included a tote bag, a sweatshirt, a sweatshirt dress, and more.

“I DIDNT APPROVE ANY OF THE MERCH COLLECTION THAT THEY PUT UP AT H&M,” the 28-year-old singer wrote, adding that it was done “all without my permission and approval SMH I WOULDNT BUY IT IF I WERE YOU.”

“The H&M MERCH THEY MADE OF ME IS TRASH AND I DIDNT APPROVE IT DONT BUY IT,” Bieber emphasized in a second Instagram Story.

Billboard received a statement from H&M on Monday evening, noting that the company had received permission to sell the products.

“As with all other licensed products and partnerships, H&M followed proper approval procedures,” an H&M representative wrote.

Billboard has reached out to reps for Bieber and H&M for further comment.
