For the first time in his nearly 40-year career, the Guatemalan singer-songwriter will perform for his fans in San Diego, San Francisco, Portland, Austin, Kansas, Minneapolis and Ontario, as well as perform at the celebrated Madison Square Garden in New York.

“Although the term ‘legendary’ is often overused in our business, it is definitely appropriate when describing Ricardo Arjona,” Nelson Albareda, CEO and founder of Loud and Live, previously said in a statement when the 2022 Blanco y Negro tour dates were announced. “From his iconic lyrics to his distinctive voice, this true Renaissance man has transcended the borders of his native Guatemala to become a universal music icon.”

Albareda in a new statement on Wednesday said he is “deeply proud to reunite [Arjona] with his fans” on the Volver Tour.

The Blanco y Negro Tour and its new extended dates follow Arjona’s Hecho a la Antigua livestream concert that was filmed during the pandemic from the historic city of Antigua in his native Guatemala, with more than 30 musicians and more than 5,000 candles.

Tickets for the Blanco y Negro: Volver Tour 2023 go on sale for the general public at 10 a.m. local time on Jan. 20. For more information, visit www.ricardoarjona.com

Makin’ Tracks: Jackson Dean Gives a ‘Fearless’ Display of His Range in Second Big Machine Single

After rising to No. 3 on Billboard‘s Country Airplay chart with his debut single, “Don’t Come Lookin’,” Jackson Dean can expect to get plenty of attention with his follow-up.

“Fearless,” which Big Machine released to country radio on Dec. 12 via PlayMPE, takes advantage of that focus by showing off the 22-year-old’s vocal range. The verses harness a Waylon Jennings-like gruffness in his lower range while the chorus showcases a Chris Cornell-ish ferocity in Dean’s upper reaches. There’s a distinct separation between those two sections of “Fearless,” which makes the chorus stand out when it arrives. But it also helps to tell the story behind the protagonist’s confession: an honest, desperate, manly expression of the life-changing power of his mate.

“It is a big jump from the verse to the chorus because not only does it mark, ‘Oh, here it is,’ but just screaming at the top of your lungs, you feel this [sentiment],” Dean says. “I feel like a lot of people would get that.”

New as Dean might be to most of America’s country audience, “Fearless” — originally titled “I’m Fearless” — has a little age on it. He co-wrote it on Nov. 6, 2019, with Jonathan Sherwood and songwriter-producer Luke Dick (“Gold,” “Settling Down”) in a home studio Dick owned in East Nashville.

“He’s always got like some sort of order on the way,” says Sherwood. “An hour into the session, he’s like, ‘Oh, by the way, I ordered burgers. So we’ve got three burgers coming in here in about 45 minutes.’ It kind of gives us incentive to work harder at that moment, and I’ve just always admired that.”

Dick also brought the foundational idea to the appointment. He had a rough percussion track with spacious guitar arpeggios and a target for the song’s narrative: “I’m fearless except when it comes to you.”

“There’s no play on words,” Dean says. “The whole thing is just pounding your chest, and then a moment of vulnerability.”

They dug in first on that chorus, the singer boasting of the fears he does not possess: no fear of heights, no fear of the dark, no fear of fighting. But the song conveys those ideas obliquely: “I’ll jump off the ledges, burn all the bridges, walk on the edges.” The results were a little different than the original version, mostly because they made good use of the letter “s.”

“Those were all one-syllable rhymes when we first started writing, like ‘I’ll jump off the ledge, burn every bridge, walk on the edge,’ and it just wasn’t sticking,” remembers Sherwood. “Luke was like, ‘Let’s just make it plural.’ And it worked.”

As did another phrase in that chorus, “ride in the echoes,” that Dean originated, but can’t fully explain.
“Truthfully,” he says, “I just thought it sounded dope.”

“I would argue that it means the echoes of self-doubt, the echoes of gossip that could be spoken about you,” Sherwood counters. “I’m just going to ride it rather than letting it be something that brings me down.”

When they had enough of that chorus worked out, they turned to the song’s opening, and Dick asked Dean a simple question: “What’s the most scared you’ve ever been in your life?” Dean recalled visiting his grandfather’s grave around age 11. One of the man’s catchphrases had been to charge people for good advice: “That’ll be 25 cents.” So Dean stuck a quarter between the headstone and the grass, and the coin instantly disappeared. Even after digging, he couldn’t find it, and that spooky cemetery encounter informed the ghostly opening lines of “Fearless.”

As the lyric progresses, the dark tone shifts from the mystery of spirits to the mystery of love: The protagonist recognizes he’s most fearful of losing his woman and simultaneously admits that her strength keeps him from fearing all those other demons. As they developed the verse melody that accompanied that tale, they also had a better idea of where the chorus could go, and they raised its peak moments, in great part because Dean could handle it.

“Jack has that kind of range, even though on the top end of it, I feel like it’s asking a lot of a singer,” says Dick. “Sometimes I think, ‘Why in the hell would you try to make another singer do that?’ I mean, even though it’s fun in the room, it’s not a practical thing to do.”

Shortly after the song’s creation, Dick produced the master version of “Fearless” at Sound Emporium with an A-list band building on Dick’s original guitar arpeggios. Between Justin Schipper’s pedal steel and Kenny Greenberg’s lap steel, the musicians framed Dean’s vocal with an appropriately haunting texture, and Dick worked out a simple but twisty guitar solo on his own time that provided short relief from the song’s intensity.

“When I get off in my own world, it may take me two hours to come up with a solo,” Dick says. “I don’t know the instrument well enough to sit there and rip, you know, 100 solos, one after another.”

That version was released online in 2021 and included on Dean’s album Greenbroke, released March 11, 2022. The power of its message and the showcase it provided for Dean’s vocals made “Fearless” an ideal single choice — though after singing it live for several years, he had a beefier take on it. So Dick booked Blackbird Studio before the end of 2022, and Dean recut his performance with subtle changes. He swallows the hook (“except when it comes you”) more dramatically, injects more growl into other segments of the chorus and holds out a long, desolate note in the final stanza.

“He’s just grown a lot as a singer,” notes Dick. “He was not on the road [in 2019], and when you start making something your own, it just makes sense to want to try it again when you have the opportunity. And I was happy to hear him sing it again.”

They did some other touch-ups, too, heightening the lap steel’s presence, threading a little more acoustic guitar into the chorus and inserting an extra beat after the bridge, filling it with a scraping sort of sound. The song — which is tagged with a Jan. 23 add date — provides a greater portrait of Dean’s capabilities.

“My biggest influences are like Cornell, [Robert] Plant, [Chris] Stapleton, that kind of stuff,” Dean says. “I don’t have the same high register as them. But I can get up there on occasion. A display of that here and there is what I want to do.”

Clip Of Antonio Brown Going Deep Surfaces, And We’re Not Talking Football

Antonio Brown might not ever lace up the cleats again to take to the gridiron, but it appears he’s finding new ways to go deep if you’re catching our drift. A clip of the NFL player allegedly delivering the hammer to the mother of his children made it to the Internet streets and folks have plenty of questions.

Antonio Brown, 34, found his name trending on Twitter Wednesday morning (Jan. 18) after a SnapChat video of him and the mother of his children allegedly doing the deed. While we haven’t seen the video in full, plenty of screencaps of the clip have been shared over and over via Twitter with folks making the requisite jokes.

Some users are even saying that this is nothing more than a promo ad for Brown’s foray into adult content but it isn’t known how the video made its way to the public. And because some people have little decorum and are parched by nature, a few folks are saluting Brown’s “little soldier” and say he might have a career in the skin game ahead of him.

We’re not sure if Donda Sports is still a thing or if Brown is still the president of the sports agency founded by Ye FKA Kanye West, considering all that’s happened recently with the Chicago superstar.

A quick scan of Brown’s Twitter feed doesn’t directly address the sex tape footage but does display some of the Miami, Fla. native’s brash and outsized personality. In a series of tweets on Tuesday (Jan. 17), Brown cryptically wrote, “Somewhere between psy·chot·ic and i·con·ic” and “Don’t play wit me Play Football” among other musings.

To check out the reaction to Antonio Brown and his Snapchat sexcapades, keep scrolling.

UPDATE:

As reported by TMZ, Antonio Brown’s Snapchat account was suspended after being reported by the woman in question in the video, Chelsie Kyriss, who is the mother of Brown’s children. She also shared a statement on social media condemning the actions of her ex and says that the video was a private moment from their since-ended relationship.

The 13 Best Super Bowl Halftime Shows

The Super Bowl Halftime Show has come a long way over the years, growing from a quaint marching band-centric affair to a blockbuster concert that draws in the biggest names in music — not to mention millions of eyeballs.

When it debuted in 1967, the halftime show featured, among other things, the University of Arizona Symphonic Marching Band performing “The Sound of Music” and “When the Saints Go Marching In,” nothing you wouldn’t be surprised to see at any ordinary college football game. As the years went on, however, it expanded — but it wasn’t quite A-list. Mid-game breaks featured everything from an Elvis Presley-impersonating magician (Elvis Presto, obviously) to the New Mouseketeers.

But when Michael Jackson headlined the halftime show in 1993, everything changed. Audiences grew accustomed to the idea of seeing the biggest pop star in the world performing at the biggest game in America, and before long, the modern halftime show took hold. It became not only an offering of live music and entertainment for football fans waiting patiently for third quarter to start, but also a badge of honor for the artists invited to perform. Playing the Super Bowl is one of the greatest milestones you can achieve as a musician, a singular marker of a star who’s earned their stripes as a bona fide legend.

From MJ’s game-changer to Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson’s culture-shifting slipup, and from Beyonce’s 2013 show-stopper to Dr. Dre’s 2022 hip-hop extravaganza, keep reading to see Billboard‘s 13 best Super Bowl Halftime Show performances of all time.

Microsoft to Lay Off 10,000 Employees as Tech Industry Struggles Continue

Microsoft is the latest technology giant to lay off scores of employees as the entire sector continues to restructure itself in the name of profitability over growth.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that the company will lay off approximately 10,000 employees, beginning Wednesday. The layoffs, which will be completed by the end of Q3, will represent a bit less than five percent of the company’s workforce.

Nadella said that affected employees will receive “above-market severance pay, continuing healthcare coverage for six months, continued vesting of stock awards for six months, career transition services and 60 days’ notice prior to termination, regardless of whether such notice is legally required.”

Microsoft is a video game giant, owning the gaming platform Xbox and studios like Bungie and games like Minecraft. It is also in the midst of a proposed $69 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard, which is facing regulatory opposition.

Microsoft is also seeking to become a major player in advertising and is Netflix’s global ad sales and technology partner.

In his memo, Nadella outlined the rationale for the cuts, hitting similar themes to other CEOs over the last few months.

“As we saw customers accelerate their digital spend during the pandemic, we’re now seeing them optimize their digital spend to do more with less,” he wrote. “We’re also seeing organizations in every industry and geography exercise caution as some parts of the world are in a recession and other parts are anticipating one. At the same time, the next major wave of computing is being born with advances in AI, as we’re turning the world’s most advanced models into a new computing platform.”

Microsoft is just the latest tech giant to cut back. Amazon said earlier this month it would cut 18,000 employees, while Facebook and Instagram owner Meta announced plans to cut 11,000 employees last year. Snap, Twitter and Netflix also made significant cuts last year.

But Nadella also sought to rally the troops as the company moves forward.

“When I think about this moment in time, the start of 2023, it’s showtime—for our industry and for Microsoft. As a company, our success must be aligned to the world’s success,” he wrote. “That means every one of us and every team across the company must raise the bar and perform better than the competition to deliver meaningful innovation that customers, communities, and countries can truly benefit from. If we deliver on this, we will emerge stronger and thrive long into the future; it’s as simple as that.”

“It’s going to be a night to remember to help kick off the Harlem Festival of Culture’s road to the festival with some of my special friends,” Lil’ Kim said in a statement of what will be her first time headlining at the theater. “Apollo was like my backyard; I played there so much and every time it was always love. The crowd is always amazing!”

“As we prepared to start on this road to the launch of the festival, we realized that this was also a milestone year for hip-hop and knew that our first major event out of the gate had to be special and center around hip-hop and R&B,” added HFC co-founder and technical & talent producer Yvonne McNair. “One of the tenants of HFC’s mission is to celebrate and preserve the cultural contributions of the Black Diaspora in music, media, art, fashion and entertainment. Hip-hop culture has touched every single part of society, and there is no artist that better represents its far-reaching impact than Lil’ Kim. We’re so thrilled that Kim will help us curate the evening to bring a full, one-of-a-kind music experience to audiences in the city where it all began. We’re also excited to launch this event and our festival journey with our partners.”

The multiplatinum rapper, actress and fashion innovator will perform her classic hits, including “No Time,” “Not Tonight (Ladies Night Remix)” and “Crush on You.” That trio of singles made Kim the first female rapper to land three consecutive No. 1’s on Billboard’s Rap Songs chart. In addition to Hard Core, the double-platinum debut album that spun off those hits, her catalog includes the platinum-certified albums The Notorious K.I.M. and La Bella Mafia and the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 “Lady Marmalade” with her alongside Christina Aguilera, Pink and Mya. The lineup of hip-hop friends who will be joining Lil’ Kim onstage for the Jump Off will be revealed closer to the show date.

Initially announced in April 2022, the Harlem Festival of Culture was inspired by the historic Harlem Cultural Festival that was held in 1969 and spotlighted in Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s Oscar-winning documentary Summer of Soul ( …Or When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised). Aside from Infiniti and the Apollo, HFC’s official media partners are All Arts and Billboard. Its additional partners include AMC Networks, Steve Madden and Northwell Health.

The dropping of Kanye West continues. His lawyers are looking to cut ties with him and are considering newspaper advertisements to let him know.

As spotted on TMZ, the Chicago, Illinois native is about to get some more bad news in the very near future. According to the celebrity gossip website Greenberg Traurig, LLP will no longer represent the creative with regards to his legal matters. It seems the firm has had more than their fair share of his bizarre antics. On Friday, Jan. 13 they filed paperwork asking District Judge Analisa Torres for an extension to be withdrawn from a case. They say there has been “a breakdown in communication” as they have tried to inform Kanye that they plan on no longer representing him. They also make reference to him ghosting them when he “deactivated the phone number previously used to contact him.”

In addition to the extension, they also asked the judge for permission to use “alternative means” to notify West that he is no longer their client. More specifically, running two advertisements in Los Angeles newspapers as per the filing. “Given Ye’s public status, publication of the Withdrawal Order will likely garner significant media attention, resulting in broader publication and provide an even greater likelihood of apprising Ye of the Order,” the firm wrote.

Furthermore, Greenberg Traurig, LLP “has dispatched process servers to the addresses it previously knew Ye to frequent, and has exhausted all methods of contacting Ye to arrange for service, including through Ye’s legal representatives and through Ye directly.” They also mention that Kanye’s ex-business manager, Thomas St. John, “has documented similar unsuccessful attempts to serve Ye.”

Sade Adu, Snoop Dogg & All Seven 2023 Songwriters Hall of Fame Inductees

Sade Adu, Snoop Dogg, Gloria Estefan, Jeff Lynne and Liz Rose are among the songwriters who will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame at the organization’s 52nd annual Induction and Awards Gala. The gala is slated for Thursday, June 15, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.

Four of this year’s honorees first gained fame in groups, but are being inducted here as individuals. They are Sade Adu (Sade), Estefan (Miami Sound Machine), Lynne (ELO) and Teddy Riley (Guy).

Three were born outside the U.S. – Sade Adu (Nigeria), Estefan (Cuba) and Lynne (England).

The honorees range in age from 51-year-old Snoop to 75-year-old Lynne.

This will be the fifth consecutive induction ceremony at which a songwriter associated with rap or hip-hop has been honored. Snoop follows Jay-Z (2017), Jermaine Dupri (2018), Missy Elliott (2019), and Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams of The Neptunes (2022). (There were no induction ceremonies in 2020-21 because of the pandemic).

This is the latest in a series of major honors for Estefan, who received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2017 and, with her husband Emilio Estefan, the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song in 2019.

Lynne was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 as a member of ELO.

Rose is nominated for a Grammy for song of the year at the 65th annual Grammy Awards on Feb. 5 for the expanded version of Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well.” It’s her third nomination in that category.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame (SHOF) was established in 1969. A songwriter with a notable catalog of songs qualifies for induction 20 years after the first significant commercial release of a song.

“The music industry does not exist without songwriters delivering great songs first,” SHOF chairman Nile Rodgers (a 2016 SHOF inductee) said in a statement. “Without them there is no recorded music, no concert business, no merch … nothing, it all starts with the song and the songwriter.”

Twelve performing songwriters or songwriting teams and 12 non-performing songwriters or songwriting teams were on the ballot to join the SHOF.

Performing songwriters who were passed over in the voting this year are Bryan Adams, Vince Gill, Patti Smith and Steve Winwood, plus four collectives — Clem Burke/Debbie Harry/Chris Stein (Blondie); Tom Johnston/Michael McDonald/Patrick Simmons (The Doobie Brothers); Ann Wilson/Nancy Wilson (Heart); and Bill Berry/Peter Buck/Mike Mills/Michael Stipe (REM).

Non-performing songwriters who were passed over in the voting this year are Dean Dillon, Franne Golde, Roger Nichols, Dean Pitchford and Tom Snow, plus four collaborations — Lynn Ahrens/Stephen Flaherty; Bobby Hart/Tommy Boyce; Sandy Linzer/Denny Randell; and Dan Penn/Spooner Oldham.

Recipients of special awards, including the Johnny Mercer Award, the SHOF’s top honor, will be announced later.

Tickets for the Songwriters Hall of Fame event begin at $2,000 each, and are available through Buckley Hall Events, (914) 579-1000 and SHOF@buckleyhallevents.com. To join the Songwriters Hall of Fame, visit: https://www.songhall.org/join.

Here are the seven songwriters who will be inducted in 2023. The SHOF supplied the titles of the five songs listed after each nominee’s name, but stresses that these “are merely a representative sample of their extensive catalogs.”

Dolly Parton Says ‘Rock Star’ Album Will Feature Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, P!nk, John Fogerty & Many More

Now that she’s officially a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, country icon Dolly Parton is calling in some major hitters for her first rock album. During an appearance on The View on Tuesday (Jan. 17), Parton said that after her induction last year — following her initial reluctance to be enshrined alongside life-long rockers — she bent some ears at the ceremony and got started on her first rock album.

“If I’m gonna be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame I’m gonna have to do something to earn it,” she told the show’s hosts, noting that her in-process sessions for the album, Rock Star, include some of the icons she met that night. After co-host Joy Behar said that the album is slated to feature covers of Led Zeppelin’s iconic “Stairway to Heaven” and the Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” she wondered if Dolly’s old pal, Stones singer Mick Jagger, might make a cameo on his song.

“I’m doing my best to try to get him on, but I did his song anyway,” she said. “I think P!nk and Brandi Carlile are going to be singing on that particular song with me.” She then ticked off who is definitely on board, an A-list roster that includes Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, John Fogerty, former Journey singer Steve Perry and Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler. Parton said she’s also been searching around for the right song she can sing with Cher.

“That’s gonna be a big thrill, I think,” she said of a potential duet with the “Believe” singer. In a Tonight Show appearance in Dec., Parton said the album would be a mix of originals (including one called “Rockin’”) and cover of songs by Prince (“Purple Rain”), Journey (“Open Arms”) and Lynyrd Skynyrd (“Free Bird”).

Video Shows LA Man Ramming Dump Truck Into Estranged Wife’s House “Because We Are Going Through A Divorce”

Tipper Truck Or Dumper Truck

In today’s episode of Bro…There Are Better Ways To Say Your Marriage Was Trash, a California man has been caught on video crashing a dump truck into his estranged wife’s home in South Los Angeles.

Fortunately, no one was injured or killed during the incident in which the driver of the dump truck also crashed into multiple parked cars. But that doesn’t mean Patricia Dunn, the alleged target of the rampage didn’t suffer more than a scare.

“A man under that kind of rage – who’s to say what he might do?” Dunn told ABC 7 of the incident that happened Sunday afternoon in the area of 107th Street and Normandie Avenue in Westmont. “He was trying to kill me. He really was.”

Dunn also told reporters that she still fears for her life and that her husband had already come by and wrecked her home prior to receiving a dump truck. (Bruh, WTF?)

From ABC:

Patricia says her husband drove by the home three times. First he came by in a Chevy Impala and crashed into the home while she was inside. He returned in a dump truck and did more damage, then came back in the Impala again.

The home’s metal fence is bent to the ground and there are large dents in the exterior of the home right outside her bedroom.

“I was just trying to stay out of the way,” she said. “So I don’t know if he was drunk or under the influence. I never experienced anything like this in my life.”

Given the situation, one doesn’t need to do much speculating as to why Dunn is divorcing this maniac.

“Because we are going through a divorce,” Dunnwho says she’s filing for a restraining order against her husbandexplained. “And he is upset about the fact no contact. He’s verbally abusive and I have nothing nice to say.”

Hopefully, this man, who hasn’t been identified publicly yet, is brought to justice and put somewhere he can’t harm Dunn or anyone else. In the meantime, Dunn said she’s currently staying with someone else in case her husband returns. Unfortunately, ABC noted that the “Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says it took about 30 minutes before law enforcement arrived on scene because the initial call came in as a traffic collision and not a crime.”

NOT A CRIME THOUGH???

Nah—this is some wild Fatal Attraction sh*t here. We hope Dunn remains safe and her husband gets the help he apparently needs while staying all the way away from his ex.
