From Missy Elliott to Diddy, Here Are 11 Rappers With Stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Ice-T will be honored with the 2,747th on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on February 17.

“Ice-T is a cultural icon and a success both in the music and television industries. His fans will be very excited to see their favorite performer placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame,” said Ana Martinez, producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, in a press statement.

Since its orgin in the 1950s, millions of tourists walk the popular attraction daily to get a photo of their favorite celebrities’ five-pointed honor.  The stretch of pink terrazzo and brass stars along Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, and its adjacent streets, are full of more than 2,500 celebrities who have contributed to film, music, television, theater and radio.

Out of the thousands of Walk of Fame stars, did you know Ice-T is only the eleventh rapper in history to receive the honor? The number isn’t too shocking, since the process to get a star is pretty laborious. Each celebrity must be nominated, apply for the star with a written statement and raise the required amount of money to receive the honor.

See below for the 11 rappers who have received the ultimate Hollywood “street cred.”

New Yorkers Enraged As Empire State Building Lit Up In Philadelphia Eagles Colors

New Yorkers were heartbroken when the Philadelphia Eagles eliminated the New York Giants from the playoffs a few weekends ago. But when the Empire State Building lit up in green and white lights to celebrate the Eagles making it to the Super Bowl this past Sunday night, Big Apple residents were enraged and screamed betrayal at whoever pulls the switches over at the iconic building.

According to the Gothamist, New Yorkers weren’t too thrilled to see their iconic building beaming in the colors of our football team’s division rival. Especially after Philly caught a break and injured San Francisco’s only two quarterbacks on the roster to punch their ticket to the big game. (That game was hella lame as a result).

Many Giants fans expressed dismay that that the city’s iconic building was celebrating their rival.

City councilmember Keith Powers called the move “absolutely ridiculous” on Twitter.

The city’s Department of Sanitation, which also uses green and white colors, encouraged New Yorkers to pretend the lights were supporting New York’s Strongest.

Yeah, we can’t just pretend this is celebrating our hardworking men and women over at New York City’s Sanitation department. Heads should roll over this! Would they have done the same thing had Giant’s rivals (the Dallas Cowboys) made it to the Super Bowl? They might’ve enraged New Yorkers even more.

While we certainly didn’t appreciate the move made over at 20 W 34th Street, some New Yorkers took things a step further and made their way into the building demanding the lights be changed and whoever runs their Twitter page be fired for the stunt.

We’re willing to bet at least a few of these people were in attendance at the Jan. 6th insurrection. Just sayin.’

Apparently the folks over at the Empire State Building planned on lighting up the building in the colors of whoever won the NFC Championship game. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the Giants’ division rival. Taking to Twitter to mock the outcry the move generated, a representative for the Empire State Building posted a video of himself fake crying while saying “Life is so unfair!”

That fool lowkey looks like Bradley Cooper so you know he’s an Eagles fan. Yes, everyone that looks like Bradley “Super Eagles Fan” Cooper is also an Eagles fan. That’s just hood science at this point. That goes for both men and women.

To be fair, later that night the building also lit up in red and gold to celebrate the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, but we don’t care about that.

What do y’all think about the move made at the Empire State Building? Fair or foul? Did New Yorkers overreact? Let us know in the comments section below.

Illinois Prosecutors Drop Sexual Assault Charges Against R. Kelly

R. Kelly Arrested for Unpaid Child Support

R. Kelly has received some favorable news regarding his ongoing legal matters. Illinois prosecutors have dropped sexual assault charges against him.

As per Raw Story, R. Kelly is sighing a breath of relief this week. On Monday (Jan. 30), Cook County Attorney Kim Foxx announced that the state will no longer be pursuing the indictments filed back in 2019. The charges include aggravated criminal sexual abuse and assault and allegedly involved four female victims; three are said to have been underage at the time of the crimes. At a news conference, Foxx explained the reasoning behind the statement in detail.

In essence, timing played a significant role in their decision as two other federal trials took priority. “Due to the extensive sentences these convictions hold, our offices have decided not to expend our limited resources and court time with the indictments” she explained. But with this decision, some of his accusers feel their voices have been silenced.

Lanita Carter, who claims she was assaulted by R. Kelly back in February of 2003, admits she was “extremely disappointed” when she heard the charges were dropped.

“I have spent nearly 20 years hoping that my abuser would be brought to justice for what he did to me. With today’s announcement, all hope of justice for my case is gone,” Carter said in a statement to AP News.

As expected R. Kelly’s legal team agrees with the decision. Steven Greenberg spoke with ABC 7 Chicago about the matter. “In my opinion, the charges should have never been brought in the first place,” Greenberg said.

Sophie Turner is gushing with pride over her husband, Joe Jonas, and the Jonas Brothers‘ latest career milestone.

The Game of Thrones actress was present Monday when Joe, Kevin and Nick received their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and she took to Instagram on Tuesday (Jan. 31) to express just how proud she is of her family.

“After almost 20 years of hard work, you boys are so deserving of this. I’m so lucky to count you as family. I’m proud of you every day,” she added, placing a shining star and red heart emoji at the end of her post.

The Jonas Brothers were equally excited to become Walk of Famers — so much so that during the ceremony, the brothers celebrated the achievement by announcing that their new project, The Album, is arriving on May 5.

“It’s nice to reflect on this nearly 20-year journey and to commemorate it here today, but we’re looking towards the future and what’s coming next,” Nick said during the ceremony. “So with that, I think that we should make a quick announcement. We are excited to announce today that our new album, The Album, will be coming out May 5th, and we can’t wait to see you on tour later this year.”

Kelly Clarkson Wants You to ‘Take Yo’ Praise’ in Soulful Camille Yarbrough Cover

Kelly Clarkson is ready to sing your praises, and she’s using a very fitting Camilla Yarbrough track to do it.

On Tuesday (Jan. 31), the American Idol alum brought down the house with a cover of Yarbrough’s “Take Yo’ Praise” on The Kelly Clarkson Show for its opening Kellyoke segment.

Accompanied by her band Y’all, Clarkson was possessed by the spirit of the track and delivered her version of the song in a soulful mid-range and full belt. The audience, enamored by Clarkson’s skill, clapped in unison as she performed.

“We’ve come a long, long way together/ Through the hard times and the good/ I have to celebrate you, baby/ I have to praise you like I should/ You’re so rare/ So fine/ I’m so glad you’re mine/ You’re so rare/ So fine/ I’m so glad you’re mine,” the three-time Grammy winner sang, decorating her rendition of the track with her signature — and powerful — vocal runs for added flair.

“Take Yo’ Praise” was released as a single from Yarbrough’s first album, The Iron Pot Cooker, in 1975. The track was famously sampled in Fatboy Slim‘s “Praise You,” which was released as the third single from his second studio album, You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby. “Praise You” hit the Billboard Hot 100 top 40 in 1999, peaking at No. 36.

James Gunn Turned Down David Bautista’s Pitch To Play Bane In Revamped DC Universe

Since taking up duties as head of the DC Universe over at Warner Bros., James Gunn has ruffled many fans’ feathers with the way he’s been shaking things up. That includes moves such as canceling Wonder Woman 3 and putting the kibosh on Henry Cavill’s return as Superman just weeks after Cavill announced he’d be returning as the Man of Steel.

Interestingly enough, former wrestler turned actor, David Bautista saw an opportunity in the chaos. According to The Insider, the actor largely known as Drax The Destroyer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe pitched Gunn on the idea of taking on the mask of Bane in his rebooted DC Universe.

With word that Bautista’s iteration of Drax will be coming to an end in James Gunn’s upcoming Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3, it would leave David Bautista with some time on his hands for the foreseeable future. And Bane is a character he’s had his eyes on playing for quite some time now.

However, it doesn’t seem like becoming the iconic Batman villain is in the cards for Bautista. As it stands, Gunn is looking to inject some young blood into his revamped DC film franchises. And that’s a big strike against the 54-year-old actor.

“I have had conversations with James about that but I think the direction he’s leaning in, completely rebooting that whole universe, he’s starting from scratch and starting younger and fresher and I think you need to do that,” the actor told Insider over the weekend while doing press for his upcoming movie, “Knock at the Cabin.”

It would’ve been cool to see a Bautista Bane go up against Robert Pattinson’s Batman. The difference in their physical sizes alone would’ve made for some interesting cinematic fight scenes. But alas, it is not meant to be. Being the stand-up guy that he is, Bautista understands why it wouldn’t work out for him. And he acknowledges it’s too late for him to take on the role of another comic book character for the long haul.

“I think for the DC Universe to be revived, you need to start from scratch, and I think you need to start with younger actors,” Bautista, 54, continued. “You need to start to plan for the next 15 years, and I just don’t think you can do that with me. And I understand that. And, also, I have to say that I appreciate that because I don’t want to play a character that I can’t bring justice to it. I don’t think at this point in my career that I can bring justice to Bane anymore. I just don’t know if I could handle the physical part, and I don’t think I would have the longevity to plan ahead for films. So, I just don’t know if I’d be that guy.”

We have faith that he could be Bane for at least two films. But at the end of the day, we ain’t calling the shots. We’re sure Bautista will eventually pop up somewhere in the DC Universe. Probably for a one-shot affair or something.

What do y’all think? Is David Bautista too old to play Bane in the DC Universe or should James Gunn have given him a chance? Let us know in the comments section below.

Ed Sheeran Returns to Social Media After ‘Turbulent’ Time in His Life

He’s back! Ed Sheeran returned to social media with a candid Instagram video on Tuesday (Jan. 31).

“Hi guys, so I realize I haven’t been that engaged in my social media or my fan base online over the last couple of years,” Sheeran confessed in the selfie video directly to camera before breaking into a charming whisper. “And the things that have been posted on this account might have got a bit boring. And I’m sorry, it’s my fault.

He continued back at full volume: “Umm, the reason I’m making this video is, just being totally honest, I’ve had some turbulent things been happening in my personal life, so I just didn’t really feel like being online and pretending to be something I’m not when I wasn’t feeling like that.”

After revealing that “things are looking up,” the British pop sensation promised his fans that he’s now “back online” and that “weird sh– is gonna start being posted” on his Instagram feed. “I’ve made this video like 50 f—in’ times, I’m not making another one,” he then quipped before signing off.

Indeed, Sheeran has been one of several high-profile artists who’ve opted not to use Twitter either, instead leaving his account on that app — which is branded “Ed Sheeran HQ” — in the hands of his management team

Late last year, the singer hopped briefly back on Instagram to commemorate his hit “Shivers” reaching the billion-stream mark on Spotify, and in the process revealed he was on the windy, outdoor set of a yet-unnamed music video for his follow-up to 2021’s = (Equals) that’s set to be released sometime this year.

Muni Long Is Still Wrapping Her Head Around 3 Grammy Nominations: ‘Everything That’s Happening Right Now Is Surreal’

Following her three Grammy nominations, Muni Long is feeling… well, she’s not so sure yet.

“I think everything that’s happening right now is surreal,” she shared with Billboard R&B/hip-hop reporter Neena Rouhani in a new Billboard News video interview. “I definitely have a delayed reaction.”

The “Hrs & Hrs” singer is up for three Grammys, including best new artist, best R&B song and best R&B performance for her breakout hit. “Watching the Grammys nominations on YouTube, I was like ‘yes!’” she exclaimed. “I was like, ‘I wonder when it’s gonna hit me?’ And then I just burst out crying for like five minutes.”

The 34-year-old artist saw great success with her 2021 viral hit “Hrs & Hrs,” following an already robust career as a songwriter for massive singers including Rihanna, Ariana Grande and Chris Brown. “Hrs & Hrs” spent three weeks atop Billboard‘s Hot R&B Songs chart, while her latest album Public Displays of Affection: The Album peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200.

Long also set the record straight regarding the common mispronunciation of her moniker, which Olivia Rodrigo pronounced as “mooney” during the Grammys nominee announcement stream. “I tend not to correct people when they get it wrong because once they find out how you actually pronounce it, they’ll never do it again,” she told Billboard. “They mispronounced Beyoncé at first and now everyone knows who she is.”

Long expressed special excitement for her “coveted four” best new artist nomination, noting it was the one she really wanted. She says she was a little nervous, considering that everyone doesn’t consider the longtime songwriter to be new. “In this iteration of myself as Muni Long — it is a character, a persona that I’ve created, but it’s also the real me,” she said. “As a songwriter, you have to be a certain way in order to be invited back. You can’t take up too much space. I spent the first 15 years of my career trying to be liked and not really being myself.

“To be acknowledged by my peers as one of the best new presences,” she went on, “It was just like, ‘Wow.’”

Chuck D Talks PBS & BBC Music Premiere of ‘Fight the Power: How Hip Hop Changed the World’

One of the first salutes honoring the yearlong celebration of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary takes place Tuesday night (Jan. 31) with the PBS premiere of Fight the Power: How Hip Hop Changed the World. The four-part docuseries, produced in partnership with BBC Music, was developed and executive-produced by Public Enemy co-founder/activist/rap icon Chuck D and his production partner Lorrie Boula.

“The most important word in the series’ title is the last word,” Chuck D tells Billboard during a recent phone interview as he explains how far the genre has traveled.  “I’ve always been at the gate of hip-hop and wanted to see us compete alongside rock [and other genres]. A little genre that could play in the same arenas; be loud, boisterous and get our point of view across. But rap had no structural belief core then [in the industry]. It was treated like a novelty with no caretaking.

“Long before any corporations realized it was time to wake up, hip-hop had been speaking out and telling truths,” Chuck D continues. “Working with PBS and BBC was an opportunity to deliver these messages through new ways and help explain hip-hop’s place in history.”

Adds Boula, “There’s a deeper level to hip-hop that we felt kept getting missed. Yes, it’s become this commercial industry … pop music to some people. But we didn’t want to make something that was one-dimensional. We wanted to show hip-hop’s real and various layers. We also knew the BBC had very extensive news archives and that they were willing to roll up their sleeves in a different way as our partner along with PBS. They understood the vision.”

That vision began crystalizing three years ago as the project got underway. Pandemic-induced delays led last year to 18-hour days of simultaneous fact-checking and editing up until this past Thanksgiving so the docuseries could be quickly turned around in time for its January premiere. The result is an insightful and provocative look at how and why hip-hop became a cultural phenomenon.

Contextualized against the backdrop of pivotal moments in American history, the docuseries tracks hip-hop’s revolutionary journey across four decades in four chapters: “The Foundation,” “Under Siege,” “Culture Wars” and “Still Fighting.” Setting the tone for each episode’s introduction is Public Enemy’s searing “Fight the Power,” the group’s groundbreaking 1989 unity- and social consciousness-raising anthem that also figures prominently in the docuseries’ title.

However, it’s the frank and illuminating first-hand accounts from various rap pioneers that really hit home. In addition to Chuck D, those front-line players include Grandmaster Caz, Ice-T, The Last Poets’ Abiodun Oyewole, Roxanne Shanté, Run- D.M.C., John Forté, will.i.am, MC Lyte, Cypress Hill’s B-Real, Melle Mel, Fat Joe and Lupe Fiasco, among others.

“I think people will be surprised by some of things the artists say,” notes Boula. “But they speak to the real issues in a way that none of us visitors to the space can. That’s the substance we wanted … to be of service to the culture, telling stories that maybe people aren’t telling that are equally as important as who’s dating who or losing their mind on Instagram.”

“And that’s one of the strong reasons why we felt confident that the BBC could help us narrate, navigate and direct the story with Lorrie building on top of that,” says Chuck D. “We needed to be able to be told how we, the U.S., looks to someone from the outside looking in. Speaking up and holding myself individually accountable; that’s the one thing I’ve always tried to do.”

Overall, Fight the Power: How Hip Hop Changed the World, is a vital living history lesson that can’t be found in any school history books. In fact, according to Boula, several colleges have already reached out to her about how to add the docuseries to their curriculums.

Beyond additional television and film projects currently on their drawing board, Chuck D and Boula are also prepping for the release of the former’s first fine art book, Livin Loud. Arriving Feb. 7 from Genesis Publications, the book features more than 250 of the icon’s paintings, sketches and drawings accompanied by a 13,000+-word commentary about his life and work.

“That’s my life,” says Chuck D, who attended art school and designed Public Enemy’s iconic logo — now on display at the Smithsonian — when the group was founded in 1986. “This book is a true expression of myself.”

PBS premieres the first episode of Fight the Power: How Hip Hop Changed the World on Jan. 31 (9pm/10pm ET/PT). The series will also able be available to stream on PBS.org, YouTube and the PBS video app. For the next three episodes, check local listings for PBS air dates/times or visit PBS.org.
