DJ Khaled Signs With Def Jam

DJ Khaled is on the move. During a press conference in Miami (Feb. 9), Khaled announced a partnership with Def Jam Recordings for his We The Best imprint. Under the deal, Khaled will also serve as the global creative consultant to Def Jam and UMG.

Khaled joins the label following an eight-year tenure with Epic Records. His run there included four Billboard 200 No. 1 albums, most recently his 2022 release God Did. He also netted six Hot 100 Top 10 tracks, highlighted by his 2017 chart-topper “I’m The One.”

“This new chapter marks a special time for me,” said Khaled in a press release. “The energy at this point in my career is at an all-time high and I’m grateful to Sir Lucian Grainge for allowing me to join his empire at this stage in my journey. Together, we will achieve even greater heights and take it to the next level. I feel blessed and so inspired with renewed energy. I’m excited to not only partner, but to come back home to Def Jam. Tunji Balogun is not only an extraordinary A&R, but a true music-man and visionary who continuously is responsible for introducing the world to some of its next greatest superstars. I’m excited to join my sister and visionary executive LaTrice Burnette once again, as we have had tremendous success on every single project we have collaborated on in the past. Def Jam is the culture and together we will make history yet once again.”

DJ Khaled is a great artist, hitmaker, mentor, and cultural innovator,” added UMG chairman/CEO Sir Lucian Grainge. “It gives me great pleasure to welcome him home to UMG where we look forward to working together to amplify his brilliant creative instincts and unique vision.”

Def Jam chairman/CEO Tunji Balogun also shared his jubilation regarding Khaled’s signing, saying: “Beyond a proven hitmaker, incredible producer, undeniable artist, and consummate showman, DJ Khaled occupies the rarified air of cultural icon. His uncanny ability to continuously have his finger on the pulse of the culture, to reach audiences all over the world in innovative yet authentic ways, and his remarkable savvy for marketing, promoting and eventizing everything he touches is absolutely second to none. We are thrilled to partner with DJ Khaled and We The Best, both as a multi-platinum, award-winning artist and as a valued executive. Without a doubt, Khaled can only make us better.”

Khaled is fresh off his Grammys performance of “God Did,” which featured Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Fridayy and John Legend. He also had five nominations at this year’s show.

Rina Sawayama Set to Headline Elton John AIDS Foundation’s Annual Oscars Party

After a year away from his annual charity event, Sir Elton John is ready to return to his Oscars party — and he’s bringing along the perfect guest to join him.

On Thursday (Feb. 9), the Elton John AIDS Foundation announced that pop singer-songwriter Rina Sawayama would serve as the headline performer at the organization’s annual Academy Awards viewing party. John and his husband, David Furnish, will serve as the evening’s hosts, while stars such as Eric McCormack and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez are set to make appearances as special guests.

In a tweet celebrating the news, Sawayama thanked John for the opportunity, and touted the organization’s stated goal of ending the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS. “Beyond excited to be performing at #EJAFOscars on March 12 in support of @EJAF,” the singer tweeted. “Founded by my wonderful friend @eltonofficial, they’re on an incredibly important mission to end HIV stigma and inequalities around the world, and to spread more love and compassion.”

In his own statement, John shared his excitement at getting to attend the party this year after he was unable to do so in 2022 due to scheduling conflicts with his record-breaking Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. “I am overjoyed to be reuniting with old and new friends on one of my favorite nights of the year,” the “Rocket Man” singer said. “As always, I am so appreciative of every attendee, donor and sponsor who continues to support the Foundation’s work across the globe in the fight to end AIDS. With such meaningful generosity, we can make a healthier and more inclusive world.”

While John may not have been present for last year’s festivities, the star had good reason. Earlier this month, Billboard Boxscore announced that John had broken the record for the highest grossing tour of all time, with his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour raking in a stunning $818 million thanks to a recent leg of Australian shows from the pop icon.

As Biel gets close to completing the exercise, she cracks up and demands, “Justin, stop.” The camera then focuses on the pop star, who attempts to sway her focus by wiggling and shimmying his legs and hips in tune with a jazzy track that plays in the background.

Timberlake cheekily responds, “What? What? It’s not distracting?” The distraction was all in good fun. Biel captioned the video, “In the gym with @benbrunotraining… and some other guy who won’t stop distracting me!!”

Biel’s trainer, Ben Bruno, reposted the video to his Instagram page and confirmed that Timberlake was indeed trying to trip up the actress. “@jessicabiel is such a bada–. This 3-way lunge matrix is hard enough as it is, let alone with @justintimberlake trying to distract you with his dancing,” he captioned the video.

Though Biel and Timberlake have been hard at work in the gym, the couple still has time for play. to celebrate the singer turning 42, she shared photos of them spending time together on a boat. “Happy birthday to the person who challenges and inspires me every day. The person who keeps me laughing and creating and risking it all. The person who makes the ordinary extraordinary. You know who you are. I love you,” she captioned the post.

MoFi Reaches Multi-Million Dollar Settlement Over Analog Vinyl Controversy, But Some Buyers Object

Vinyl producer Mobile Fidelity has reached a settlement that could be worth as much as $25 million to resolve allegations that the company’s pricey “all analog” records were secretly created using digital methods. But some customers strongly object to the deal, saying it’s “tainted by the stink of collusion.”

The proposed agreement, first publicly filed in court last month, would allow tens of thousands of MoFi customers to secure a full refund for any eligible records that they purchased. Alternatively, it would also allow them to keep their albums and instead take a 5% cash refund or a 10% refund in credit.

The final monetary total depends on how many consumers utilize the settlement and which options they choose, but court filings say the money available under the deal is “expected to be over $25 million.” Under the settlement, MoFi will continue to deny any wrongdoing.

But the deal is not final, and it’s already facing stiff objections from attorneys who filed similar lawsuits against MoFi. They say the settlement was struck without their input, by “ineffectual” lawyers who took a bad deal: “Despite this clear abdication of their duties to class members, counsel … are now trying to ram an inadequate, collusive settlement through this court.”

The scandal at MoFi first erupted last summer, after Phoenix-area record store owner Mike Esposito posted a pair of videos to YouTube alleging that the company’s “all-analog” and “triple analog” records were in fact partially created using so-called direct stream digital technology. In one of the videos, MoFi’s engineers appeared to confirm that some digital tech had in fact been used in production.

As reported by the Washington Post, the digital revelations created “something of an existential crisis” in the analog-obsessed vinyl community. In a statement in late July, MoFi apologized for using “vague language” and for “taking for granted the goodwill and trust” of its customers: “We recognize our conduct has resulted in both anger and confusion in the marketplace. Moving forward, we are adopting a policy of 100% transparency regarding the provenance of our audio products.”

But the apology wasn’t enough to avoid litigation. In early August, a pair MoFi customers named Stephen J. Tuttle and Dustin Collman filed a proposed class action in Washington federal court, claiming the company’s analog branding had been “deceptive and misleading” and had duped them into paying premium prices.

Later, at least four more similar cases over the analog scandal were filed in federal courts around the country, including a class action filed in Illinois on behalf of a MoFi buyer named Adam Stiles, who claimed the company had “intentionally hid this fact from consumers.”

“When defendant began using a digital mastering process in its records as opposed to purely analog, it inherently produced less valuable records — because the records were no longer of limited quantity and were not as close to the studio recording — yet still charged the higher price,” the lawyers for Stiles wrote at the time.

The proposed settlement, first filed on Jan. 15 in the lawsuit filed by Tuttle and Collman, is expected to cover at least 40,000 consumers who purchased records marketed as analog. The “total gross value” of the refunds and credits available to consumers is over $25 million, according to the agreement; the lawyers who filed the case will be paid $290,000 for their services.

Seeking approval of the settlement, attorneys for both sides argued the deal was reached through “arm’s-length negotiations” and represents “a fair compromise in light of potential risks of continued litigation.” They warned that if the case continued, MoFi might have success in defending itself by arguing that the customers didn’t actually suffer any real harm by buying the digitally-processed records.

In a statement to Billboard in response to a request for comment on the proposed settlement, MoFi lead counsel Joseph J. Madonia said: “Unfortunately, we can’t comment on pending litigation, but MoFi stands behind its records and is offering anyone who is not satisfied a refund.”

While the new settlement was filed solely in one case (the case filed by Tuttle and Collman), it would cover all applicable MoFi buyers nationwide — including those who filed the separate cases in other courts and weren’t involved in negotiating the deal. If the agreement is approved, those other customers would be eligible for the same refunds, but they would also be barred from continuing to bring their own claims against MoFi.

Faced with that scenario, the attorneys who filed those other cases are none-too-pleased about the deal.

In a Jan. 27 filing, the lawyers who filed the Illinois case on behalf of Stiles decried the agreement as a “reverse auction” settlement, alleging that MoFi essentially shopped around between the various lawsuits and picked the most “ineffectual” lawyers it could find in order to get the cheapest nationwide settlement possible. They claimed MoFi’s lawyer had directly stated that he would “pick the lowest bidder” from the five class actions.

“There is no doubt that the [settling] plaintiffs have inadequately represented the class,” they wrote, saying that the settlement will be “perpetually tainted by the stink of collusion.”

An attorney for the settling customers declined to comment on the allegations of “collusion” and “reverse auctions.” A representative for MoFi declined to comment directly on those claims, but in a court document filed this week in the Stiles case, the company’s attorneys flatly rejected those allegations, arguing that the proposed settlement would “afford the best possible representation for the class.”

Attorneys for the objecting customers did not immediately return a request for comment on Thursday (Feb. 9).

Michael B. Jordan is shedding more light on his public breakup with Lori Harvey, citing work as a healing balm.
The Creed 3 actor and director opened up about the split during an interview Wednesday (Feb. 8) with CBS Mornings cohost Gayle King. While in his hometown of Newark, New Jersey, Michael B. Jordan spoke about how his work schedule has helped him deal with the breakup with Harvey.

King brought up his SNL monologue from his hosting stint two weeks ago where he cracked jokes about the situation, claiming he was on a membership-dating app and learning a new language. “Estoy en Ray,” he quipped. He’d go on to say he was joking to King, but she asked: “You’ve been through a very high-profile breakup. How do you deal with that?”

“I think for me it’s just I was lucky enough to have a lot of work,” he replied. “I’m a firm believer in what’s for you is for you, and coming out of that situation — not to give it any energy and kind of move from that … it was an experience for me to grow, you know, and learn.“

The pair split up last June after dating each other for a year and a half. Lori’s father, entertainer Steve Harvey, confirmed the breakup on his radio show at the time. Harvey is now currently dating Snowfall lead actor Damson Idris. For Jordan, he feels that now is a prime time for him in terms of growth.

“I’m in my light right now. This is my Jordan year, I mean that,” the 35-year-old told King. “This is my year. There’s so much going on, so many blessings, so many great things.” In addition to discussing the upcoming Creed 3 featuring costar Jonathan Majors, the interview also shined a light on Jordan’s work with HBCUs, touching on his sponsorship of last weekend’s Legacy Classic basketball tournament at the Prudential Center in Newark.

P!nk Scores Her First Top 10 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs Chart With ‘Trustfall’

P!nk lands safely on Billboard’s multimetric Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart (dated Feb. 11) with “Trustfall” at No. 8. The track, from her forthcoming album of same name, due Feb. 17, debuts as her first top 10 on the survey.

“Trustfall,” which P!nk co-wrote with Fred Again.. and John McDaid, the latter two of whom also produced it, earned 3 million U.S. streams and sold 6,000 downloads Jan. 27-Feb. 2, according to Luminate.

Concurrently, “Trustfall” bows at No. 1 on the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart, giving P!nk her first leader in her initial appearance. Plus, the track starts at No. 12 on Dance/Electronic Streaming Songs, P!nk’s first entry there, as well.

However, P!nk is no stranger to the Billboard dance charts, having logged seven No. 1s on Dance Club Songs, dating to 2002, and four No. 1s, among seven top 10s, on Dance/Mix Show Airplay since 2003. P!nk has topped Dance/Mix Show Airplay with “U + Ur Hand” (for two weeks in 2007), “So What” (one, 2008), “Raise Your Glass” (two, 2010) and “Blow Me (One Last Kiss)” (one, 2012). (The Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart measures radio airplay on a select group of full-time dance stations, along with plays during mix shows on around 70 top 40-formatted reporters.)

On the Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart, Ava Max debuts at No. 2 with Diamonds & Dancefloors. The pop/dance-leaning set, Max’s inaugural entry on the chart, opens with 15,000 equivalent album units, which also bring it in at No. 34 on the all-genre Billboard 200.

The set yields eight entries on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, with “Million Dollar Baby,” “Ghost” and “One of Us” leading the way at Nos. 11-13, respectively. “Baby” logged 1.7 million streams (up 33%) and sold 700 downloads (up 71%), the latter sum earning Max a No. 9 beginning on Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales, where it’s her third top 10.

Max now has 11 Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart hits, including her track with Tiësto, “The Motto,” which peaked at No. 2 for 10 weeks (behind Elton John and Dua Lipa’s “Cold Heart [PNAU Remix]”) last March-May.

Elsewhere on the Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart, SG Lewis logs his third appearance with AudioLust & HigherLove (No. 13, 2,800 units). The set contains two Hot Dance/Electronic Songs hits that each peaked in October: “Call on Me,” with Tove Lo (No. 27 high), and “Vibe Like This,” with Ty Dolla $ign and Lucky Daye (No. 31).

Next up on Top Dance/Electronic Albums come Cheat Codes with country crossover set One Night in Nashville (No. 14, 2,700 units). It’s the act’s first appearance on the chart, although it follows 27 entries, including three top 10s, on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, since 2015. Collabs from the new album “Something’s Coming,” with Lady A, and “What’s It Gonna Take,” with Mitchell Tenpenny, start on that tally, at Nos. 24 and 33, respectively.

Returning to the Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart, Imanbek earns his second top 10 as a billed recording artist and Jay Sean scores his first with “Gone (Da Da Da)” (11-9). Previously, Imanbek lifted to No. 4 with “Goodbye,” with Goodboys (March 2021). Plus, his remix of SAINt JHN’s “Roses” spent three frames at No. 2 in April 2020. “Gone” is getting core-dance airplay at Music Choice’s Dance/EDM channel, KMVQ-HD2 San Francisco and WZFL (Revolution 93.5, All Things Dance) Miami, among other outlets.

Additionally on Dance/Mix Show Airplay, Miley Cyrus vaults to her third top 10 with “Flowers” (25-10). The pop track, also in its third week at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, utilizes remixes from Addal, Dark Intensity and others in attaining core-dance airplay on SiriusXM’s Diplo’s Revolution, SiriusXM’s BPM and more.

Rihanna Says She Had ‘39 Versions’ of Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show Setlist: ‘It’s Gonna Be a Celebration of My Catalog’

Rihanna unpacked the “jam-packed show” she’ll be giving on Sunday during the Apple Music Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show press conference Thursday (Feb. 9).

In Phoenix just days ahead of the big game and even bigger performance, RiRi sat down with Apple Music’s Nadeska Alexis in front of a live studio audience to discuss all of the hard work she’s put into her first live performance in seven years.

“It feels like it could have only been now,” she said about the timing of her Super Bowl Halftime Show performance at this point in her career. With 14 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits, nine Grammy Awards, eight studio albums and $1.4 billion net worth under her belt, Rihanna (born Robyn Rihanna Fenty) only accumulates more achievements in need of celebration, and this weekend’s performance is no exception.

“When I first got the call to do it again this year, I was like, [hisses] ‘You sure?’ I’m three months postpartum. Should I be making major decisions like this right now? I might regret this,” she said. “But when you become a mom, there’s something that just happens where you feel like you can take on the world. The Super Bowl is one of the biggest stages in the world, so as scary as that was because I haven’t been on stage in seven years, there’s something exhilarating about the challenge of it all … It’s important for my son to see that.”

The 34-year-old singer later opened up about the “immense” physical challenges of performing again after she welcomed her first child with A$AP Rocky in May. “You’re just running around for 13 minutes, trying to put like a two-hour set for 13 minutes,” Rihanna explained. “And you’re gonna see on Sunday, from the time it starts, it just never ends until the very last second. I know I’m saying too much, but it’s a jam-packed show.”

Even filling the show with all of her jams has been challenging, having to curate a setlist that represents her discography and sticks to that 13-minute runtime. We at Billboard have even tried coming up with our ideal setlist for RiRi — and even thought about more songs she should still consider performing — but Rihanna has us beat, because she said she came up with 39 versions of the setlist, which she called the “biggest challenge” of all.

“That was the hardest, hardest part — deciding how to maximize 13 minutes but also celebrate. That’s what this show’s gonna be. It’s gonna be a celebration of my catalog in the best way that we could have put it together. You’re trying to cram 17 years of work into 13 minutes … but I think we did a pretty good job of narrowing it down,” she explained with a chuckle during the press conference. “There were probably about 39 version of the setlist right now. We’re on our 39th. Every little change counts, whether I want a guitar cut out, something muted, something added or just put in a whole new song, or take out a whole song.”

While Alexis reflected what Rihanna means to her as a fellow Caribbean woman, the superstar mused about how her halftime show special will certainly be about “representing for immigrants, representing for my country, Barbados, representing for Black women everywhere … I’m really excited to have Barbados on the Super Bowl stage.”

The Apple Music host also questioned the direction of her new music — yes, what her fans have all been waiting for — especially in regards to RiRi’s claim from her 2019 Vogue cover story that her ninth studio album, called R9 in the meantime, would be “reggae-inspired or reggae-infused.”

“Musically, I’m feeling open. I’m feeling open to exploring, discovering, creating things that are new, things that are different, things that are off, weird, might not ever make sense to my fans, the people that know the music that I put out. But I just wanna play it,” she responded. “I want to have fun. I want to have fun with music.”

The Fenty mogul later had fun answering questions from young fans, one of whom asked what her favorite album or song to record was. After much deliberation, she answered, “ANTI, for sure, top favorite album I’ve ever made,” and joked that her last studio album “was the first time that I took my time making an album while not being on tour, and that frustrated my fans a bit and here I am doing it again to them.”

Rihanna also shared some advice about staying humble to another young girl in the audience.

“My humility came from my childhood, growing up in the Caribbean, growing up in my household with my mom. She’s a very humble woman, her mom was a very humble woman. And I’ve never lost sight of that,” she said. “I often fear the pedestal that the world can put you on, and I always want to feel my feet on the ground. That makes me feel safe.”
