DaBaby “They Just Want Your Life,” Juicy J & YKOM “Built” & More | Daily Visuals 2.10.23

HipHopWired Featured Video

For a while now DaBaby has been uncharacteristically quiet (i.e. staying out of trouble) and judging from his latest music video, we might have an idea as to why he’s been keeping himself out the limelight.

For his latest visuals to “They Just Want Your Life,” the North Carolina representative gets his daddy daycare on and spends time with his children in the comfort of his own home where he lays on the floor and hugs and kisses his kids throughout the video. That’s a good look for any father out there. Just sayin.’

Juicy J meanwhile is all about getting things lit and in his and YKOM clip for “Built,” the two men hit the coast in a spiffy truck and bring along some bikini-clad young ladies to enjoy the road and the view that the beach provides when the sun is setting. Why Juicy J and his peoples wearing jackets though?

Check out the rest of today’s drops including work from Kevin Gates, Icewear Vezzo featuring Peezy and G.T., and more.

Billboard Explains: How Rihanna Arrived At the Super Bowl

The musical drought changed in the fall of 2022, when Rihanna was announced as the halftime performer for Super Bowl LVII and the singer unveiled “Lift Me Up” off the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack. But what will taking the stage at the big game on Sunday (Feb. 12) mean for RiRi and what will it add to her legacy?

“Jay-Z and Roc Nation began overseeing the Super Bowl halftime show in 2020, and on average, each show costs $13 million,” explains Billboard‘s Neena Rouhani. While Super Bowl performers don’t usually get paid for the gig, they often see a huge bump in merchandise and music sales.

Scott partnered with host team the Utah Jazz to put together a two-day concert series at The Depot featuring Don Tolliver, Sheck Wes and other special artists who have yet to be announced, while the “Feel This Good” hitmaker, the “Me, Myself & I” and “Best Friend” rappers and the “Kids Are Growing Up (Part 1)” crooner have all been tapped to headline shows sponsored by the NBA.

Lenny Tavarez, Lasso & More: What’s Your Favorite New Latin Music Release? Vote!

This week, our First Stream Latin roundup — which is a compilation of the best new Latin songs, albums, and videos recommended by the Billboard Latin editors each week — is powered by new music from Carlos Vives, Lenny Tavárez, Yendry, and more.

The list starts off with Vives’ nostalgic track “La Historia,”  the first single from his upcoming album Escalona: nunca se había grabado así. A tribute to the famous composer Rafael Escalona, Vives’ modern pop version of the classic melancholic vallenato will transport you to the warm Colombian Caribbean coast. Then we have Italian-based artist Yendry paying tribute to her Dominican roots in a hypnotizing bachata track that subtly fuses electronic sounds called “Herrera.” Lasso’s ballad “Los Hombres Son Todos Iguales” (All Men Are The Same) is also on the list, with potent lyrics reflecting two worlds: when a woman has been hurt in the past by empty promises, and when a man is trying to demonstrate that not all men are the same.

On the reggaetón side, we included two great selections: Alvaro Diaz and San Senra’s “1000CANCIONES” and Tavárez’s “Felicidades.” The former marks the pair’s first collaborative effort powered by a fast-forward perreo beat. The latter has the Puerto Rican act singing an empowering lady’s anthem about living life after a breakup.

Other tunes this week include Adriel Favela’s ranchera “En Este Amor,” Hector Perez and Felipe Santos’ collab, and more. Which release is your favorite? Cast your vote — or enter your favorite selection — in the poll below.

Macklemore Reveals How Relapse Created ‘Darker, More Honest & Vulnerable Moments’ on His Upcoming Album

Macklemore has been a longtime advocate for addiction recovery, and has always been honest about his own struggles with sobriety since he first admitted himself into rehab for drug addiction and alcoholism in August 2008.

In a new interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the star opened up about his relapse in the summer of 2020. “It was an intense time. The life that I knew, just like all of our lives, was stripped away. I’m used to a certain schedule of touring, of being gone, of being home, of recovery and being able to go to a physical 12-step meeting,” he explained. “That stopped during COVID. Eventually, I’m on Instagram while being on Zoom and I’m just not really paying attention to the meetings. Eventually — and this is what happens when I don’t prioritize my recovery — if I don’t put that first, then I will lose everything that I’m putting in front of it. That’s what happens.”

He added that “luckily,” the relapse only lasted a few weeks, bu caused a lot of “pain” that he still feels two and a half years later. “I’m still working on getting back trust, but I think that it gave me a reprieve, a reminder again, a slap in the face. Not a delicate reminder, but a slap in the face reminder,” he said. “‘This is your life. You get one of these. What are you going to do with this precious time on this Earth? Do you want to be secretive? Do you want to be hiding? Do you want to be in the shadows, or do you want to live your life to it’s fullest potential, get back on it and be honest?’”

Macklemore also channeled that pain into Ben, his upcoming album out on March 3. “I think that pain is a catalyst for great art. I don’t want to inflict the pain on myself anymore to make art. It’s not like I need to self-sabotage in order to create, but I think that it created some darker, more honest and vulnerable moments on the album,” he shared. “Again, a relapse is not […] any sort of part of the process, but it does create that vulnerability.”

The Ledger: How HYBE Is Moving Beyond BTS to Become Music’s Next Major Player

The Ledger is a weekly newsletter that covers the financial and economic side of the music business. An abridged version appears at Billboard Pro. Pro subscribers automatically receive The Ledger. Sign up here to receive the newsletter without a Pro subscription.

On Feb. 1, days before the Grammy Awards, Billboard honored HYBE chairman Bang Si-hyuk with the Clive Davis Visionary Award at the annual Power 100 event for creating a company that, as Bang put it in his acceptance speech, “challenges the traditional boundaries of music and entertainment.” Fittingly, just one week later, Bang put the global music industry on notice with two major deals that further solidified HYBE’s status as more than the home of BTS and a budding empire and force in pop culture.

First, HYBE America, the U.S. division led by CEO Scooter Braun, acquired QC Media Holdings, the parent company of Atlanta-based hip-hop label Quality Control Music, home to Migos, Lil Baby, Lil Yachty, City Girls and others. Quality Control gives HYBE a hip-hop presence to complement its core K-pop acts (BTS, TOMORROW X TOGETHER) and HYBE America’s pop- and country-leaning rosters from SB Projects (Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande) and Big Machine Label Group (Tim McGraw, Thomas Rhett), respectively. The deal also further diversifies HYBE beyond K-pop and helps alleviate the loss of BTS while its members pursue solo projects and enter government-mandated military service.

Now the No. 1 K-pop music company by market capitalization ($6.5 billion), HYBE on Thursday (Feb. 9) announced it spent $334 million for a 14.8% stake in K-pop rival SM Entertainment, the company behind NCT 127 and SuperM. In buying the majority of founder Lee Soo-man‘s shares, HYBE became the top shareholder in the third-largest Korean music company. With a market capitalization of $1.85 billion, as of its closing price on Friday (Feb. 10), SM Entertainment ranks only slightly behind JYP Entertainment’s $1.9 billion and is more than double YG Entertainment’s $780 million.

Becoming SM Entertainment’s top shareholder can further HYBE’s leading position in South Korea, an increasingly important music market worth $6 billion in 2021, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. A 15% stake doesn’t give HYBE control over SM Entertainment, but it creates opportunities to work for mutually beneficial outcomes. One could see SM Entertainment artists taking advantage of HYBE’s Weverse social media platform, for example.

The Quality Control deal was worth $300 million in cash and stock, according to HYBE’s regulatory filing. Valuing the company at a multiple of 12 times earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization — the midpoint of the 10 to 14 times enterprise value-to-EBITDA multiple typically seen in deals for similar music companies — implies Quality Control has annual EBITDA of roughly $25 million. That should provide a nice boost to HYBE’s bottom line. In 2021, HYBE had adjusted EBITDA of $232 million. Through the first nine months of 2022, HYBE’s adjusted EBITDA was $220 million. That implies Quality Control could provide HYBE with a 7.5% to 10% boost in adjusted EBITDA if it finishes 2022 by merely matching its adjusted EBITDA from the fourth quarter of 2021 — and that’s without considering any cost savings resulting from the merger.

HYBE’s annual EBITDA puts it in a middle ground between the three majors and large independent companies. Universal Music Group’s calendar 2021 EBITDA was $2 billion (1.68 billion euros). Warner Music Group’s EBITDA for the year ended Sept. 30, 2022, was $1.2 billion. Sony Music Entertainment does not report EBITDA but paces well ahead of HYBE. After the majors, however, there’s a large gap. BMG’s 2021 EBITDA was $170 million. Hipgnosis Songs Fund posted EBITDA of $130 million in its year ended March 31, 2022. Reservoir Media’s EBITDA in the year ended March 31, 2022, was $41 million. If HYBE matches its EBITDA from the fourth quarter of 2021, it would exceed $300 million in calendar 2022. Had HYBE owned Quality Control during 2022, its EBITDA would have been in the area of $325 million (assuming $92 million in fourth-quarter 2022 EBITDA).

HYBE’s two moves this week are proof the music industry is more competitive and dynamic than some market share numbers might suggest. While the three major labels dominate the record business, independent companies — some distributed by the majors — are flourishing. HYBE certainly has its connections to the majors: Its music is distributed in the United States and other regions by UMG, it has a joint venture with UMG’s Geffen Records and many of its management clients are signed to major labels. But HYBE is ultimately independent of the majors. Based in South Korea, not London or New York, it’s a nimble outsider with a unique approach to melding music and technology.

Perhaps most important to HYBE’s continued growth — and what sets it apart from much of its competition — is how it’s going about doing it. Whereas catalog (music older than 18 months) has taken a larger share of consumption and the industry’s biggest deals and investments have involved established catalogs from Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Sting and others prized as safe investments — billions of dollars are flowing into the music industry to acquire intellectual property that’s often many decades old — HYBE is paving its way through entrepreneurism of a different sort.

Like 300 Entertainment (purchased by Warner Music Group in 2021), Alamo Entertainment (purchased by Sony Music Entertainment in 2022) and LVRN (recently valued at more than $100 million), HYBE builds new artists from scratch, sets trends and influences pop culture — beyond TikTok, at that. Now, as it rapidly builds its empire, Bang, Braun and the rest of the company are starting to show what that looks like at scale.

British Indie Rockers Lovejoy Announce 20-City U.S. Tour

Following a four-show blitz of North America in December, U.K.-based indie rock outfit Lovejoy is returning to the U.S. with a 20-date North American tour. Tickets for the trek went on sale Friday (Feb. 10).

Lovejoy touch down in North America on May 4 at Nashville’s Basement East and will is also slated to play the Shaky Knees festival in Atlanta on May 5, the Novo in Los Angeles on May 16 and Minneapolis’ First Avenue on May 26. The group will end their tour with a show at the Governor’s Ball Festival on June 10.

Formed during the final days of the pandemic by lead singer Wilbur Soot — a well-known Twitch streamer and former Youtube comedian — with friends from Brighton Beach, England, Lovejoy has amassed nearly 1.6 million monthly listeners on Spotify and built a steady following here in the U.S.

In December, the group’s first U.S. shows — two in Los Angeles and two in New York — quickly sold out, packing venues like L.A.’s Moroccan Lounge with a steady flow of 20-something, mostly female, fans marching to the beat of the band’s double kick drum percussion. Lovejoy’s visit would reveal the band’s status as unlikely heartthrobs and showcase their clever banter and mischievous wit.

Along with the tour announcement, Lovejoy has released a video for the band’s hard-charging new single “Call Me What You Like.” Soot has a penchant for casting himself as a hopeless romantic — a “Jim Halpert” from The Office type, replete with entangled numbness and inescapable inadequacy — and yet he refuses to melt into a floor puddle with a kitschy breakup song. As it turns out, “Call Me What You Like” is a surprising and satisfying middle finger to the notion of having it all as it mucks around in the middle phases of an early relationship close to collapse.

Along with Lovejoy singles “Knee Deep” and “It’s All Futile! It’s All Pointless!”, “Call Me What You Like” demonstrates how much progress the group has made in finding its voice, creating and then dissipating density with surprise hooks, lyrical bridges and stop-on-a-dime change-ups. Many of the songs have Soot walking through vignettes of half-memory and snapshots, pushing listeners farther and farther down the trail with only breadcrumbs to find their way back.

“And so I find’s myself in your mum’s bedroom,” Soot sings on the new single. “Fighting with the pink roller blinds. It’s on pay-per-view. Just place your bests on who’s lost their mind.” When asked what the line meant during a brief interview with bandmates Joe Goldsmith, Ash Kabosu and Mark Boardman, Soot laughed and offered up, “I’m not necessarily sure, in that song I just find myself thinking a lot about her mom’s bathroom and going through the drawers.”

Kane Brown & Katelyn Brown Top Country Airplay Chart With ‘Thank God’

Kane Brown and Katelyn Brown’s “Thank God” hits the penthouse on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated Feb. 18). In the week ending Feb. 9, the song increased by 7% to 32.6 million in audience, according to Luminate.

“Thank God” marks the first duet for the pair, who married on Oct. 12, 2018. The husband and wife make their ninth and first trips to No. 1 on Country Airplay, respectively.

Notably, the Browns mark the second married couple to go hand-in-hand to the top of Country Airplay with a duet: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s “It’s Your Love” led for six weeks in 1997. (Plus, Blake Shelton’s “Boys ‘Round Here,” featuring Pistol Annies – with his then-wife Miranda Lambert – and Friends, reigned for a week in 2013.)

“Thank God” was penned by Christian Davis, Kyle Fishman, Jaxson Free, Josh Hoge and Jared Mullins, and Dann Huff produced.

It’s the third single, and Country Airplay leader, from Brown’s LP Different Man. “One Mississippi” ruled for a week last March and “Like I Love Country Music” led for a week in August. Starting with Brown’s duet with Chris Young, “Famous Friends,” which led for one frame in July 2021, he has rolled up four No. 1s in a row.

The singer-songwriter from northwest Georgia banked his first Country Airplay No. 1 in October 2017 with “What Ifs,” featuring Lauren Alaina.

On the streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Hot Country Songs survey dated Feb. 11, “Thank God” ranked at No. 3, with its airplay Jan. 27-Feb. 2 bolstered by 10.8 million official U.S. streams and 3,000 downloads sold.

The track is also being promoted to pop and adult radio and jumps 33-25 on the Pop Airplay chart and 30-26 on Adult Pop Airplay (both dated Feb. 18).

Top 10 ‘Place’-ment

Bailey Zimmerman scores his second Country Airplay top 10 in as many chart appearances as “Rock and a Hard Place” climbs 11-8 (21.1 million, up 12%). The song follows his “Fall in Love,” which led for a week in December.

All charts dated Feb. 18 will update on Billboard.com Tuesday, Feb. 14.
