Sting to Become a Fellow of The Ivors Academy

Sting will become an Academy Fellow, the highest honor The Ivors Academy bestows, at the 2023 Ivors, which will be presented at Grosvenor House in London on May 18.

Sting is the 23rd Fellow that the Academy has inducted in its 79-year history. He follows such songwriting greats as Sir Paul McCartney, Kate Bush, Joan Armatrading and Peter Gabriel. The latter received the award last year.

“Of all the awards in the world of music, The Ivors are for me, the most prestigious,” Sting said in a statement. “Songwriting is a skilled craft and The Ivors Academy are its guild. So, I am delighted and honoured to be offered this Fellowship of the Academy, joining and acknowledging this extraordinary group of fellow songwriters, and all of those who went before us.”

Sting has won seven Ivor Novellos, including their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. He was inducted into the New York-based Songwriters Hall of Fame that same year.

Sting has won 17 Grammys, including two in songwriting categories – the 1983 award for song of the year for “Every Breath You Take” and the 1991 award for best rock song for “The Soul Cages.” He won a 2002 Primetime Emmy for outstanding individual performance in a variety or music program for A&E in Concert: Sting in Tuscany…All This Time. In addition, he has been nominated for the two other EGOT awards. He has amassed four Oscar nods for best original song and a 2015 Tony nod for original musical score for The Last Ship.

Speaking on behalf of The Ivors Academy, Armatrading, Sting’s labelmate at A&M Records from the late ’70s into the early ’90s, said: “Across all of Sting’s work as a solo artist and with the iconic band The Police, he is without doubt one of the UK’s foremost successful songwriters and performers and is certainly deserving of one of the most prestigious awards in the music business. My huge congratulations on being made a Fellow of The Ivors Academy, Sting.”

Sting is managed by Martin Kierszenbaum of Cherrytree Music Company.

The Ivor Novellos, which were first presented in 1956, are judged by songwriters and composers from The Ivors Academy, the U.K.’s professional association for songwriters and composers. Past winners include Adele, Stormzy, Little Simz, Cathy Dennis, Annie Lennox, Amy Winehouse, Dave and John Lennon.

This year’s nominations will be announced on Tuesday April 18. The winners will be revealed at The Ivors on Thursday May 18.

The Ivors Academy also announced that Amazon Music is the new title sponsor of The Ivors as part of a multi-year, global deal. Amazon Music will bring music creators to the forefront through exclusive content offerings, as well as live performances, an immersive red carpet and backstage interviews that will be livestreamed on the Amazon Music UK Twitch channel in 2023.

Tom Gray, chair of The Ivors Academy, said, “Globally, songwriters are justly demanding the recognition that they deserve. As we push back against the historic undervaluing of the song and songwriter, we are delighted to collaborate with Amazon Music to celebrate songwriters, explore their craft and firmly place their value and originality at the centre of music. Together, we will make sure that The Ivors is recognised around the world as the most important celebration of songwriting.”

Amazon Music will integrate this year’s Rising Star nominees into their global developing artist program, Breakthrough, which provides long-term, customized global plans for emerging artists. This support includes video and audio content, global marketing, increased visibility across Amazon Music playlists and programming and high-profile Amazon Original tracks available only on Amazon Music.

Tom Winkler, head of songwriter, publisher and society relations for Amazon Music explains, “By globally amplifying the exceptional work of The Ivors Academy, Amazon Music will continue to celebrate songwriters and empower fans to discover the craft behind the music.”

To commemorate Sting’s honor, an unheard, Amazon Original demo of “If It’s Love,” taken from the musician’s most recent studio album, 2021’s The Bridge, is being released exclusively via Amazon Music. This is the seventh installment of the newly-launched demos program, which provides Amazon Music customers with the opportunity to hear demos of artists’ songs. Previous demo releases include songs by Walker Hayes and Maren Morris.

Robert Glasper Turned Chris Brown’s Grammy Insult Into a Golden Charity Opportunity

When they go low, Robert Glasper goes viral. The Grammy-winning pianist and producer/songwriter could have stewed about the static he got from Chris Brown after he bested the “Iffy” singer for this year’s best R&B golden gramophone and Brown griped, “Y’all playing. Who da f— is this?”

Instead of getting into a social media showdown with Brown, Glasper did something way better: he took the insult and printed it on a t-shirt while promising to donate the proceeds to a charity. On Tuesday (Feb. 14) Glasper announced that after just four days those shirts had sold out already.

“Thanks for the support. A portion of the proceeds from this shirt will be donated to the Community Music Center of New Orleans,” Glasper said in an Instagram post featuring an image of the black shirt emblazoned with Brown’s insult. “A nonprofit created to share the music culture and music education in New Orleans, providing free music lessons to underserved youth. I can’t thank y’all enough for supporting this cause.”

At press time Glasper had not announced how much was raised by the limited-edition shirts.

After an avalanche of social media critique for his fit of pique, Brown posted an apology 24 hours later, DMing Glasper to express regret for his comments. ““Congratulations my brother.. I would like to apologize if you took offense to my reaction at the Grammys,” Brown wrote. “You were not the intended target and I know I came off really rude and mean. After doing my research I actually think your amazing…THE ORGANIZATION ISN’T DOING US BLACKS OUR DUE DILIGENCE. YOU AND I SHOULD never be in the same [category].. two totally different vibes and genres. So from one black man to another.. CONGRATULATIONS. HOPE YOU ARE ABLE TO FEED YOUR FAMILY FOR LIFE. God bless my G.”

Glasper’s righteous dunk on Brown is just the latest example of a musician turning hate into delicious haterade. It came six months after Maren Morris flipped her feud with Jason Alden’s wife, Brittany, over the latter’s transphobic joke into a “Lunatic Country Music Person” t-shirt that raised money for LGBTQ right organization GLAAD; the effort raised more than $100,000 for GLAAD’s Transgender Media Program and Trans Life.

Is Kanye West AKA Ye The Nazi Whisperer?

HipHopWired Featured Video

Celebrity Sightings In Los Angeles - November 27, 2022

Kanye West, also known as Ye, made heads turn after declaring his embrace of antisemitic tropes and expressing love for Nazis. Via a new report, it appears that Ye’s stances have caused an uptick in hate crimes against members of the Jewish community and raised several alarms in the process.

Kanye West has been keeping a lower profile than he normally does these days but according to a new report from the Anti-Defamation League, the Chicago superstar’s influence in stoking antisemitic sentiment reigns supreme. Centering on a so-called #YeIsRight movement, the ADL says that if found that the hashtag was seen by around 6 million users on Twitter alone since last October.

More from the ADL’s report:

Ye’s October 2022 antisemitic comments coincided with Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter, at which time the ADL noted an increase in both antisemitic content on the platform and a decrease in the moderation of antisemitic posts.

Since October 1, 2022, there have been more than 10,000 Twitter mentions using or referencing the “Ye is Right” slogan. These posts have reached at least six million users on Twitter, garnering more than 22,000 likes and more than 5,000 retweets.

The report says the hashtag movement began at the top of the year via the Groypers white supremacist organization, using the slogan “Ye Is Right, Change My Mind” to coincide with Ye’s 2024 presidential campaign.

Other findings include an uptick in antisemitic vandalism at schools, college campuses, and Jewish institutions among other locations across the nation. Reports of harassment against members of the Jewish community are also on the rise along with the establishment of white supremacist groups.

Kanye West remains largely mum after cutting business ties with adidas and other brand partners in the wake of his comments against Jews, although last month he found himself in legal hot water after a woman filed a battery charge against him for snatching and throwing her phone.

Napster Takes ‘Foundational Step’ Into Web3 With Mint Songs Acquisition

Napster announced that it acquired Mint Songs, a music NFT marketplace that aims to help artists establish a thriving Web3 presence, on Wednesday (Feb. 15). The acquisition brings together a streaming service with a platform focused on creating digital collectibles.

Jon Vlassopulos, CEO of Napster, said in a statement that Mint Songs “have done groundbreaking work helping thousands of artists get their start in Web3, reach their fans in new creative ways through collectibles, and unlock significant new revenue streams.”

“We feel that the natural next step for the Napster service is to include collectibles that fans can get as rewards for engaging with artists they love or that they can purchase to collect and share,” he added to Forbes. “We already have hundreds of thousands of artist storefronts where our fans go to listen to music every day so adding collectibles is very contextual in the fan experience.”

Garrett Hughes, co-founder and CTO of Mint Songs, said in a statement that Napster has “the vision to finally take Web3 music to the mainstream.” “Our goal all along has been to create deep, engaging, and innovative ways for artists to connect with fans that also offer them an opportunity to monetize that fandom,” he continued. “Conversely, we see a demand from fans for a music service to offer more than just on-demand music and podcasts, which makes Napster’s ambitious goals all the more attractive.”

Mint Songs’ Nathan Pham will join Napster to lead Web3 product initiatives, while Hughes will serve as an advisor to the company and “work closely with Vlassopulos to integrate Mint Songs’ technology into the Napster platform,” according to the acquisition announcement.

Last year, Napster was acquired by a pair of companies with Web3 experience: Hivemind and Algorand. Vlassopulos, who had spent close to three years at Roblox, took over as Napster CEO in September. “We want to bring the community together and enable the artists, with the data we have, to activate their communities around things like access to physical events and digital experiences,” he said at the time. Napster then launched Napster Ventures for the purpose of acquiring Web3 music startups.

Matt Zhang, founder and managing partner of Hivemind, applauded the Mint Songs acquisition on Wednesday. “We are excited for Napster to be a central player in the music Web3 ecosystem and acquiring Mint Songs is a great foundational step,” he said in a statement. “The combination of Napster’s continued innovation that powers the platform currently along with Mint Songs’ technology IP and expertise, will help drive Web3 innovation for the music industry.”

The R&B trio made a special appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Tuesday (Feb. 14) with a reimagined song and music video for their 1994 hit, which spent 14 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100. To be more representative of the track’s updated lyrics, an addendum was added to its title, in parentheses: “I’ll Make Love to You (But We Don’t Have To).”

“It’s our 15th Valentine’s Day, we’re gonna celebrate once this house is clean,” sings band member Nathan Morris, tenderly stretching on a pair of rubber cleaning gloves.

“Are the kids finally asleep?” croons Shawn Stockman. “Said we’d do it once a week/But we don’t have to, babe, let’s see what’s on TV.”

“I’ll make love to you if you want me to,” Wanyá Morris sings. “Unless you’re too tired, because I’m tired, too.”

The “End of the Road” musicians shared the music video to their Instagram page in a joint post with Colbert, who also performed a featured verse on the revamped track. “It’s time that Valentine’s Day made room for those couples among us who are still deeply in love — but also love being deeply asleep by 9 p.m.,” reads the caption.

The Blink-182 drummer shared a series of snaps from his and the Poosh founder’s Valentine’s date, which consisted of a trip to the desert, star-gazing and a breakfast in bed, complete with rose petals shaped into a heart with their initials. “First Valentine’s Day with you as my wife. I love you,” Barker wrote.

The Kardashians star was also feeling the love, and took to the comments section to share, “First Valentine’s Day with my husband … my forever Valentine.” The reality star also took to her Instagram Stories to share more details from her and Barker’s time together; she received a classic heart-shaped cake in red icing that featured her and the musician’s name in elegant script.

The pair’s children also were included in the Valentine’s Day festivities. Reign, Mason and Penelope — whom the Poosh founder shares with ex Scott Disick — each received a mini heart cake with their names written on it, as did Barker’s children Alabama Luella, Landon Asher, and stepdaughter Atiana De La Hoya, whom he shares with ex Shanna Moakler. Later in the evening, Kardashian shared footage of the desert as a thin layer of snow fell, as well as a still shot of the fireplace.

Rosalía to Receive Producer of the Year Award at Billboard Women in Music Awards

Rosalía will receive the inaugural Producer of the Year Award at the Billboard Women in Music Awards. The Spanish superstar is set to receive the honor on March 1 at the YouTube Theater at Hollywood Park in Los Angeles.

“We are thrilled to honor Rosalía with this award and recognize her behind the scenes work in the recording studio to bring her vision to fruition,” Hannah Karp, Billboard’s editorial director, said in a statement. “With numerous groundbreaking hits that blur the lines between traditional music genres, Rosalía consistently uses her unique producing abilities to break the mold and deliver the unexpected. There are so many talented producers like Rosalía out there, looking for their big break — we’re excited to provide these women and non-binary creatives with support and a much-needed platform through our new partnership with Bose.”

Earlier this month, the 30-year-old artist’s Motomami won best Latin rock or alternative album at the Grammys. The genre-hopping set (dembow, bachata, reggaeton, bolero) also won album of the year at the Latin Grammys. The 16-track LP peaked at No. 3 on Billboard‘s Top Latin Albums chart. About the vision for her award-winning and critically acclaimed album, Rosalía previously told Billboard: “There is no correct or incorrect in making music; if I thought like that I wouldn’t do anything. I always feel music is about an urge. And [in] Motomami, there are so many different influences, and I need to feel free to create and I need to create in order to feel free. I make music because that’s my truth.”

It followed Rosalía’s 2018 breakthrough set El Mal Querer (which also won a Grammy for best Latin rock or alternative album) and her debut album, Los Ángeles. In 2019, she was honored with the Rising Star Award at the Billboard Women in Music Awards, becoming the first Spanish artist to receive that honor.

Also a force in the touring realm, Rosalía’s Motomami World Tour earned $28.1 million and sold 343,000 tickets across three continents, according to figures reported then to Billboard Boxscore. She landed at No. 7 on the 2022 year-end Top Latin Tours chart.

Through alignment with the Billboard Women in Music Awards, Bose will both spotlight existing women and non-binary producers breaking boundaries and provide a platform dedicated to uplifting and amplifying aspiring creatives. As a Category Sponsor, Bose and Billboard will honor the inaugural Producer of the Year as a part of this year’s Women in Music celebrations. This first-of-its-kind program will further cement Bose’s commitment to uplifting underrepresented voices while directly spotlighting a trailblazer in the space.

This year’s event, hosted by Quinta Brunson, will recognize music’s top artists, women producers and executives for their contributions to the music industry, their communities and beyond. SZA will receive the Woman of the Year Award; Becky G will be honored with the Impact Award presented by American Express; Doechii with the Rising Star Award presented by Honda; Ivy Queen with the Icon Award; Kim Petras with the Chartbreaker Award; Latto with the Powerhouse Award; Lainey Wilson with the Rulebreaker Award; Lana Del Rey with the Visionary Award, and TWICE with the Breakthrough Award.

Tickets are available to the public, and can be purchased via Ticketmaster here, with more information at billboardwomeninmusic.com. Prices range from $85 to $275. Sponsors for the 2023 Women in Music Awards include American Express, Honda, Mugler, Nationwide, Bose and Smirnoff ICE.

Makin’ Tracks: Thomas Rhett Makes Space in His Life (And Career) for ‘Angels’

The lives of country artists’ spouses can be challenging — their partners spend long periods of time on the road, often chew up their home time with business meetings and songwriting appointments, and get interrupted periodically by strangers when the couple is out in public.

So it’s telling that Lauren Akins, who celebrated her 10th anniversary with Thomas Rhett last October, sweetly defines herself by that relationship in the profile on her Twitter page: “Blessed to be married to my best friend.”

Rhett clearly remains enamored of his wife, documenting their lives together through much of his material, including “Life Changes,” “Look What God Gave Her” and “Star of the Show.” Part of that appreciation is his recognition of the abnormal scenario she freely embraces.

“Anyone married to someone in the spotlight, it takes a very special human being,” he says. “The amount of days I’ve been gone, the amount of times I’ve let work overtake my family life, the amount of times I’ve said yes to stuff that I probably should have said no to — and [she was] there with me the whole way.”

His newest single — “Angels (Don’t Always Have Wings),” which Valory released to country radio via PlayMPE on Jan. 23 — reflects both his gratitude for her and some degree of guilt for his job’s infringements, though Rhett didn’t necessarily intend to be the voice delivering that message.

“Angels” emerged from a co-writing appointment with Teddy Swims, a multigenre singer-songwriter who made Rhett a featured artist on his rhythmic 2021 track “Broke.” “Teddy Swims is like if Chris Stapleton started an R&B band,” Rhett says. “That’s what he sounds like — absolutely insane.”

Rhett aimed to write something that Swims might not typically record: a “frickin’ country ballad that the chorus is just at the tip top of his range,” says Rhett. “Selfishly, I wanted to hear Teddy singing something like that.”

The night before the session, Rhett read a book that raised the possibility of meeting an angel who presents in the physical world as a human being. From that idea, he drifted to the phrase “Angels (Don’t Always Have Wings)” and decided the concept applied to his wife. He introduced that idea during his Nashville writing date with Swims, Josh Thompson (“I’ll Name the Dogs,” “Ain’t Always the Cowboy”) and songwriter-producer Julian Bunetta (“Craving You,” “Beer Can’t Fix”). Everyone bought into it, with Rhett leading the charge.

“You have to stand around with, like, trash cans to pick up all the stuff leaking out of him,” Bunetta says. “You can’t pick it up fast enough. He’s one of the most prolific writers I have ever been around.”

They wrote “Angels” in a waltz time signature, placing the song’s female subject on a pedestal while the singer, self-described as a “mess of a man,” takes responsibility for his own failures and a “selfish heart.” It is, agree Rhett and Bunetta, an exaggeration of Rhett’s character, though Rhett expected Swims to sing it in the end anyway.

“It’s not like every movie that Robert De Niro is in, he had to live,” Bunetta reasons. “The greatest artists have always been able to interpret the song the way it needs to be interpreted. Whether or not they lived that is sort of beside the point.”

They fashioned “Angels” with the music and lyrics working in tandem to wring maximum emotion out of the experience. It starts humbly and conversationally in its opening verses, rising in the chorus to a higher melodic plain. In the process, it uses a fairly small number of words, allowing the phrases — and the song’s heart — to unfold slowly.

“The use of space in songs is good,” Bunetta notes. “Sometimes space says what needs to be said.”
The mix of sweet adulation and self-abasement proved dramatic, reaching the climactic, semi-spiritual line in the narrative just before the chorus’ end: “I don’t know why you were patient and wasted good savin’ on me.” The foursome felt a bridge was needed to complete it, and they wrestled with numerous ideas before Thompson asserted himself, using “wings” as both the last word in the chorus and the first word in the bridge.

“He is the least-vocal songwriter that I write with — and by least vocal, I mean the person that is not just shouting out every melody and lyric that comes to his brain,” Rhett says. “I think he kind of allows the write to happen. He just kind of tucks away in a corner with his laptop that’s from 2001 because he’s too old school to upgrade. We got stuck; he just spat out that bridge. And we were just like, ‘That’s what it was supposed to be the whole time.’”

Swims sang over a drum loop and acoustic guitar for the Bunetta-produced demo, but by the next morning, Rhett was already having second thoughts about who should sing it. He checked in with Swims periodically to gauge what was happening with “Angels,” and after several months, got Swims’ permission to keep it for himself. Rhett recorded it with producer Dann Huff (Kane Brown, Brantley Gilbert), who honored the song’s spacious needs.

Rhett, meanwhile, needed private space for his vocal. The chorus tested his falsetto in a way that he had never quite encountered before in the studio, and he wasn’t certain he could capture the song’s vulnerability in front of a producer and engineer. So he holed up in his home studio and sang 60 or 70 takes, which would later be compiled into one vocal.

“I really just wanted to lock myself in that emotion alone and see what would come out,” he says. “The intricacies of my voice breaking up or the falsetto not being perfect — that’s the realness of it.”

After Rhett’s album Where We Started arrived April 1, 2022, his manager, G Major Management founder Virginia Davis, saw particularly strong fan reaction to “Angels,” and she encouraged Bunetta to explore a remix. He redid the bass and drums, and added a piano with a tremolo effect in the opening bars. “I thought that the intro, if we’re going to radio with this song, needed some ear candy to perk your ear up,” says Bunetta.

“Angels” debuted at No. 51 on the Feb. 11 Country Airplay chart and moves to No. 32 in its second week. The song also continues to generate direct messages on social media as fans adopt a song Rhett wrote about his wife as their own.

“It was really cool,” he says, “to watch something so personal resonate on such a large scale with people from different walks of life.”

Miley Cyrus Bought Herself Flowers For Valentine’s Day, Naturally

While a lot of her fellow musicians and movie stars were posting highly stylized videos and photos of their lavish, flower- and chocolate-drenched Valentine’s Day celebrations on Tuesday (Feb. 14) Miley Cyrus was blissfully alone. In a nod to her Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 smash “Flowers,” Cyrus spent the allegedly most romantic day of the year celebrating herself.

“I can love me better. Happy Valentines day,” Cyrus wrote along with one of the iconic images from the “Flowers” video in which she coolly stares out into the distance while wearing a black bodysuit with cut-outs and shades.

Cyrus has plenty to celebrate this week as “Flowers” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for a fourth week since its release, besting the three-week reign of her previous longest-running No. 1, 2013’s “Wrecking Ball.”

“Flowers,” released on Smiley Miley/Columbia Records, drew 74.5 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 32%) and 38.7 million streams (down 19%) and sold 26,000 (down 29%) Feb. 3-9, according to Luminate. The single also spends its fourth week at No. 1 on the Streaming Songs chart; dips to No. 2 on Digital Song Sales after three weeks at the summit; and pushes 6-4 on Radio Songs, where it ties “Wrecking Ball” for Cyrus’ top-charting hit. It wins top Airplay Gainer honors on the Hot 100 for a second straight week, as it also lifts 7-5 on the Pop Airplay chart, 8-5 on Adult Pop Airplay and 9-8 on Adult Contemporary, among other ascents.

The single is also proving to have staying power overseas as well, where it’s on track to spend a fifth consecutive week atop the UK’s singles chart based on the midweek numbers.

Check out Miley’s post below.
