Billboard Music Awards 2023 Date Is Set

The 2023 Billboard Music Awards is shifting from its regular spring slot for a new fall date.

One of the biggest music events on the U.S. calendar, the BBMAs is set for Nov. 19, with further details on the show to be announced at a later date, organizers Billboard and Dick Clark Productions announced today (March 16).

The switch-up will see the BBMAs return to the cooler months, a traditional spot for the ceremony’s early years. From its debut in 1990 through to 2006, the BBMAs took place in December. Then, every edition from 2011 onwards was held in May, with the exception of the pandemic-interrupted 2020 show, which rolled out in October.

The forthcoming event is the followup to the 2022 BBMAs, held last May 15 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and hosted by Sean “Diddy” Combs.

On that occasion, the Weeknd (17 nominations) and Doja Cat (14) entered the ceremony as the top two finalists. Olivia Rodrigo won seven awards, Ye (formerly Kanye West) bagged six, Drake and Justin Bieber both claimed five, Taylor Swift snagged four, and BTS emerged with three awards, more than any other group or duo that time.

The BBMAs celebrates the hottest names in contemporary music today, with winners determined by performance on the Billboard charts.

Awards for the 2023 BBMAs are based on music consumption reflected on Billboard’s charts dated Nov. 19, 2022 through Oct. 21, 2023, and take into account key fan interactions with music, including audio and video streaming, album and song sales, radio airplay and touring.

Selena Gomez Says She’s ‘Still Out Here Looking’ For Her Crush: Watch

Selena Gomez has not given up on her quest to find Mr. Right, if her latest TikTok is any indicator. The Rare Beauty founder took to the social media app on Wednesday (March 15) and shared a little insight on her dating life.

“I hate it when girls are like ‘My crush doesn’t even know I exist,’” Gomez mouths along to a popular sound, wearing a bright pink button down top. “I’m like ‘Girl, my crush doesn’t even exist.” The “Lose You To Love Me” singer captioned the post, “Still out here lookin for him lol.”

Gomez’s post comes two months after initially sparking dating rumors with The Chainsmokers’ Drew Taggart. Dating rumors between the pair first sparked in early January, when musicians were seen bowling together in New York City during a night out. A week later, the 30-year-old cleared up her relationship status via her Instagram Stories and wrote “I LIKE BEING ALONE TOO MUCH,” along with the hashtag “#iamsingle.” Gomez, however, caused even further confusion for her fans when she was spotted again with Taggart during a night out, this time holding hands with him.

The Disney Channel alumna has been candid about her romantic endeavors in the past — in her recently released documentary, My Mind & Me, she seemed to open up about her former flame Justin Bieber, though she did not explicitly name him. “I felt haunted by a past relationship that no one wanted to let go of,” she said. “But then I just moved past it. I wasn’t afraid anymore.”

Gomez continued, “I feel like I had to go through the worst possible heartbreak ever. I just think that needed to happen, and ultimately, it was the best thing that ever happened to me.”

Lizzo Has Her Beyonce Moment When Fan Does Flawless ‘About Damn Time’ Dance at London Show

Lizzo isn’t so far off from her pre-fame days that she can’t remember what it feels like to be a superfan memorizing her favorite singer’s choreo at home in the mirror and then busting it out at their show.

Which is why it was extra sweet that she posted a video on Thursday morning (March 16) chronicling the moment when megafan Shyanne Barnes executed the entire “About Damn Time” live routine during a show at London’s O2 Arena on Wednesday.

“Rewind to the summer of 07, I learned the entire Beyoncé ‘get me bodied’ choreography… it literally saved me at a time I was dealing with depression & loss,” Lizzo wrote alongside the video of her shouting “are you ready to dance with us?” The star repeatedly made eye-contact with Barnes, who flawlessly matched the on-stage moves from the pit and then pointed to Barnes at the end of the song and said, “make some noise for this beautiful dancer.”

“Then I remember doing the ‘single ladies’ choreo at the Mrs Carter tour and she looked at me! It was a brief moment but absolutely world changing for me,” Lizzo added in the caption. So, in the great tradition of paying it forward, Lizzo made sure Barnes got her moment to shine. “Fast forward to last night when this young girl danced ‘About Damn Time’ (LIVE VERSION) with me & the big grrrls ? what she doesn’t know is I cried backstage ???? to know I mean to her what my favorite artist meant to me is so deeply touching. I LOVE YALL SO MUCH.”

Barnes definitely appreciated the shine as well, writing in comments, “Lizzo thank you SO MUCH ! I’m going to remember this forever , I love you and your music so so much ! you make me so happy ! I’ll see you again tonight!” In her Instagram Story, Barnes showed off her show-day outfit, a custom t-shirt with five images of the singer and a colorful sign that read, “I learnt the choreo if you need me 2 dance 4 you.”

The Story noted that the sign and shirt got Barnes pulled into the pit, followed by footage of her doing the dance with the caption, “core memory fr thank you so much I had the best time” and a clip of her absolutely losing her mind afterwards.

Niall Horan Jokes He ‘Wouldn’t Turn’ for His 2010 ‘X Factor’ Audition as a Coach on ‘The Voice’

Niall Horan stopped by Hot Ones on Wednesday (March 16) to chat about his freshman season on The Voice while taking on the iconic “Wings of Death.”

Three hot sauces in, the former One Direction-er told host Sean Evans that rejecting hopeful singers is the hardest part of his new gig on the NBC reality show. “‘Cause I know what it’s like to be 16 and stood on a stage, and looking at some famous dude that’s got your future in his hands,” he said. “The easy part is pressing the red button, spinning the chair, saying how you like someone. But when the chair turns around and you’re not with them, how do you give them that rejection feedback? And that’s where I’ve struggled with it, but it’s full circle stuff.”

However, Horan was quick to admit there’s one person he wouldn’t have trouble saying no to as a coach: his 16-year old self auditioning for The X Factor. “I wouldn’t have turned,” he deadpanned before breaking out into a laugh. “Not for that guy. I was right place, right time. No, I don’t think I would’ve turned for myself, put it that way.

“I’d turn for me now!” the Irish singer-songwriter continued. “I’ve learned a lot, I’ve been around the block a couple of times, which is, a lot can be said for someone that’s 29. But yeah, I’d turn now. I wouldn’t’ve turned then.”

A longtime fan of the YouTube series, the “Heaven” singer, whose third solo album The Show drops June 9, handled the heat remarkably well — though he eventually broke out in the shakes when the time came to try the infamous sauce Da’ Bomb. “I’ve been nervous about this for about seven years,” he joked before taking a big bite.

James Gunn To Write & Direct ‘Superman: Legacy’ Reboot

Now that Henry Cavill’s out as the Man of Steel, James Gunn is looking to ensure the next Superman sets the proper tone for his new DC Universe. Thus, he’ll be writing and directing the upcoming Superman: Legacy film.

Deadline is reporting that the head honcho of Warner Bros. DC Studios division will be taking the helm of DC’s most important project for the rebooted DC Universe that has led to the “firing” of Cavill, Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Black Adam) and Jason Momoa (Aquaman). Looking to kick off his “Chapter One, Gods and Monsters” of the DC Universe, James Gunn and his Co-Chairman & CEO Peter Safran are looking to add younger actors who can carry the DC franchise for the next decade and beyond and needless to say, they’ll need a young Superman to get that done (no shots to the 39-year-old Cavill).

Gunn announced back in the fall when he took the DC job that was penning a new Superman movie — something Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav is eager to see — and that Henry Cavill would not be returning as the Man of Steel as the project deals with the character’s early days.

Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned. Gunn already has mentioned on social that his Superman will be younger than his 40s.

No word on who’ll be filling the big red boots (not that MSCHF bullsh*t), but whoever ends up taking on the role will have his work cut out for him as fans absolutely loved Henry Cavill’s interpretation of the iconic superhero. That being said, Gunn is open to keeping Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman while it’s rumored that Jason Momoa will be recast as Lobo in upcoming DC projects.

As fast as rumors that Gunn would be working Robert Pattinson’s Batman into his DC universe, it’s now being said that the Twilight Dark Knight might end up being part of DC’s version of the Multiverse and operating in its own reality. That may mean that a new Batman may end up getting cast to eventually cross paths with whoever the new Superman may be.

While plot and villain details about the new Superman film have yet to be revealed, you can bet that Gunn will deliver something to remember as he has an entire universe of film franchises riding on it. Ditto for Joker: Folie à Deux.

What do y’all think about James Gunn writing and directing the new Superman: Legacy movie? Let us know in the comment section below.

Why the Music Industry Must Embrace Meritocracy for True Diversity, Inclusion (Guest Column)

It is time for all music industry professional to reflect on the ways in which our industry has perpetuated a system that benefits a select few at the expense of marginalized communities. It is time for us to embrace a new paradigm, one that values skill and merit over relationships and aristocratic privilege.

In today’s rapidly changing world, the music industry finds itself on the brink of disruption. We must recognize that our long-standing history of exploiting disenfranchised groups is incompatible with our espoused values of social justice and inclusivity. The hesitance to be proactive and embrace change is no longer acceptable. The data clearly shows the consequences of our delayed reaction. We must act now to ensure that the pendulum swings in the right direction.

Our participation in an aristocracy-based system allows white men with access to rights ownership to hijack black and brown stories. This approach is no longer effective in today’s music economy. As independent artist services have grown, ownership has increasingly been placed in the hands of artists, and a focus on “artist-preneurship” has emerged. This growth in the independent sector has led to decentralized systems that cut out middlemen and gatekeepers, promoting transparency and accountability.

We must recognize that the music industry is no longer a playground for profit-driven oligarchs who lack leadership skills and contribute to revolving door politics, loss of job fulfillment, and opportunities. In every other industry, a minimum level of skill, education, or experience is required to advance. It is essential to evaluate how the music industry holds its leaders accountable.

Aristocracy drives a wedge between culture and progression, and limited access to BIPOC at both the creative and executive levels makes the industry slow to change, perpetuating a “boys club” culture. The top 1% of the industry often rely on DEI consultants to meet an “optics quota,” promoting performative change rather than real progress. We must recognize that diversity and inclusion are not just buzzwords. They are essential for driving revenue and ensuring long-term success.

The statistics show that black and brown stories are highly valued in the music industry, with 48% of all artists being from underrepresented groups and Hip-Hop and R&B being the top-streamed genres. By embracing diversity and promoting inclusion, the industry can tap into a vast market of music consumers who are eager to hear authentic and diverse voices. It is not only the right thing to do, but it is also a sound business strategy that can result in increased revenue and success for music companies.

Despite the economic disadvantages they face, women of color are a value add, possessing a strong educational background, resourcefulness, and fundamental understanding of the music business. In producing the first research study on intersectionality in the music business, ‘A Seat at the Table: A Perspective on Women of Color in the Music Business’ (2022), we found that 87% of all WOC in the music biz have earned at least a Bachelor’s or higher degree of education, yet they remain the most underpaid demographic. The majority of WOC in the music business enter into student loan debt, while also entering into the music business via unpaid internships. Over 86% were hired without direct relationships or industry connections. Imagine how much progress would be made if resources were properly invested.

Therefore, I urge us all to shift from an aristocratic hierarchy to a meritocratic one. By valuing skill and merit over relationships and privilege, we can ensure true diversity, equity and inclusion in the music industry. We must commit to deliberate action, such as hiring more BIPOC at the senior level, committing to paid internships, and funding black-owned music businesses. These steps are crucial towards creating a more equitable and profitable music industry.

Let us embrace the future with open hearts and minds, committed to creating a music industry that is truly inclusive and reflects the diversity of our world.

The alternative indie group transformed the song into a dark, mystical song of temptation, as musician Wes Cook croons in the chorus, “You can try to resist/ Try to hide from my kiss/ But you know, but you know that you/ Can’t fight the moonlight.”

The cinematic rendition of the track fits well with the theme of Wolf Pack, which follows the story of teenagers Everett (Armani Jackson) and Blake (Bella Shepard) as their lives are changed in the wake of a California wildfire that spurs a terrifying creature. Gellar plays an arson investigator named Kristin Ramsey in the show, in her return to the supernatural genre after her star-making role on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

To celebrate the release of the new edition of “Can’t Fight the Moonlight,” Paramount+ is teaming up with The Trevor Project to match up to $10,000 in donations to the organization, which provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention resources for LGBTQ+ youth. Anyone interested can donate here.

‘The Masked Singer’ Judges & ‘Sesame Street’ Characters Join Forces for a ‘Dynamite’ BTS Cover: Watch

The Masked Singer has made its most fitting collaboration to date. On the Wednesday (March 15) episode, judges Nicole Scherzinger, Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy and Robin Thicke appeared alongside several fan-favorite characters from Sesame Street to perform BTS‘ 2020 smash hit “Dynamite.”

Elmo kicked off the performance by sitting at a piano and getting warmed up before announcing to the crowd, “The Masked Singer, Sesame Street is here!” Big Bird kicked off the track’s first verse, before swapping between Cookie Monster — who, naturally, popped up from a cookie cart — and Elmo. Jeong then came in enthusiastically, singing,”Ladies and gentleman, I got the medicine so you should keep ya eyes on the ball!”

After verse cameos from Grover, Abby Cadabby and Count von Count, the rest of the judges filed in and joined in for the song’s upbeat chorus: “‘Cause I-I-I’m in the stars tonight/ So watch me bring the fire and set the night alight/ Shining through the city with a little funk and soul/ So I’ma light it up like dynamite, whoa oh oh,” they sang in unison before a grand finish, complete with raining confetti.

“Dynamite” is one of BTS’ No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. The track spent three weeks atop the tally in September 2020, and enjoyed 32 total weeks on the chart. The song also served as the K-pop group’s first No. 1 on the all-genre chart.

Ja Morant Sits Down With Jalen Rose For First Interview Since Suspension

HipHopWired Featured Video

Los Angeles Lakers v Memphis Grizzlies

Ja Morant gave his first interview after a video of him surfaced brandishing a gun inside a Colorado nightclub, which led to him being suspended by the Memphis Grizzlies. Sitting down with ESPN’s Jalen Rose, the basketball superstar expressed regret over his decisions and promises to deliver a better image going forward.

Ja Morant, 23, is one of the young faces of the league and clearly is a draw no matter what arena he’s playing in. His electrifying style of play and passion on the court became coupled with troubling allegations of violence and negative actions over the past year. Ahead of the interview, Rose, himself a product of humble beginnings during his rise in the NBA, issued a stern but brotherly warning to Morant.

More from ESPN:

“Honestly, I feel like we put ourselves in that situation with our past mistakes, and now it’s only right that we focus in and lock in on being smarter and more responsible, holding each other accountable for everything,” Morant said Wednesday during an interview with ESPN’s Jalen Rose, referring to his inner circle. “I feel like in the past we didn’t know what was at stake. And now finally me having that time to realize everything, have that time alone, I realize that now.

“I realize what I have to lose, and for us as a group, what we have to lose. It’s pretty much just that being more responsible, more smarter and staying away from all the bad decisions.”

Good on Ja Morant for realizing his mistakes and being willing to grow from them.

Morant will return to the Grizzlies at the conclusion of his eight-game suspension handed down from the NBA.

TikTok Dismisses Calls for Chinese Owners to Sell Stakes

TikTok was dismissive Wednesday of reports that the Biden administration was calling for its Chinese owners to sell their stakes in the popular video-sharing app, saying such a move wouldn’t help protect national security.

The company was responding to a report in The Wall Street Journal that said the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S., part of the Treasury Department, was threatening a U.S. ban on the app unless its owners, Beijing-based ByteDance Ltd., divested.

“If protecting national security is the objective, divestment doesn’t solve the problem: a change in ownership would not impose any new restrictions on data flows or access,” TikTok spokesperson Maureen Shanahan said. “The best way to address concerns about national security is with the transparent, U.S.-based protection of U.S. user data and systems, with robust third-party monitoring, vetting, and verification, which we are already implementing.”

The Journal report cited anonymous “people familiar with the matter.” The Treasury Department and the White House’s National Security Council declined to comment.

Late last month, the White House gave all federal agencies 30 days to wipe TikTok off all government devices.

The Office of Management and Budget called the guidance a “critical step forward in addressing the risks presented by the app to sensitive government data.” Some agencies, including the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security and State, already have restrictions in place. The White House already does not allow TikTok on its devices.

Congress passed the “No TikTok on Government Devices Act” in December as part of a sweeping government funding package. The legislation does allow for TikTok use in certain cases, including for national security, law enforcement and research purposes.

Meanwhile, lawmakers in both the House and Senate have been moving forward with legislation that would give the Biden administration more power to clamp down on TikTok.

Rep. Mike McCaul, the chairman of the House Foreign Relations Committee, has been a vocal critic of the app, saying the Chinese Communist Party is using it to “manipulate and monitor its users while it gobbles up Americans’ data to be used for their malign activities.”

“Anyone with TikTok downloaded on their device has given the CCP a backdoor to all their personal information. It’s a spy balloon into your phone,” the Texas Republican said.

TikTok remains extremely popular and is used by two-thirds of teens in the U.S. But there is increasing concern that Beijing could obtain control of American user data that the app has obtained.

The company has been dismissive of the ban for federal devices and has noted that it is developing security and data privacy plans as part of the Biden administration’s ongoing national security review.
