“I’m much happier when my titties are out, and I can run around free,” she told the publication. In a viral performance clip on Twitter earlier this month, Monae lifted her top and joyfully exposed her breasts.

In a previous interview with Zane Lowe, Monae spoke about the creative prowess for her upcoming album Age of Pleasure and writing from a candid space.

“Listen, I’ve had my age of depression. I’ve had my age of anxiety. I’ve had my age of struggle,” Monae said. “And again, it’s not like life is pleasurable every single day, but I think I have actively just sought out … How do I create a space for myself? How do I redirect my mind on how I’m thinking about things? How do I realize that right now in this present moment, moments that we’ll never get back, this is where you need to find your pleasure? This is your moment.”

Elsewhere in her Rolling Stone interview, Monae also spoke about how her friends influenced the sound of Age of Pleasure, and how Blackness helped cultivate the album. “It was inspired by all of my friends, my community of folks who are from South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, the Caribbean, Atlanta, L.A., Chicago,” the singer said. “Seeing all of us together in our Blackness, in the love that we had in our eyes for each other. People from the continent f–k around with trap from Atlanta. You know what I’m saying? I love how the diaspora — we talk to each other.”

Monae’s fourth album, Age of Pleasure, drops June 9 via Atlantic Records.

“The results are in,” he wrote on Instagram Monday (May 22). “I have a Fractured right tibia, dislocated kneecap, ANNNNND the album of the year tho!”

He continued: “But In all seriousness tho, anyone that knows me knows there’s nothing I love to do more than bein up on that stage! I can’t lie I’m super disappointed that I have to postpone the WHDi tour for a little bit, because I was really looking forward to goin on those stages and rocking this WHDI shit for y’all live. However I am in good spirits and I’m only looking at it as just a minor lil setback for a MAJOR COMEBACK! No stress!!”

Despite the postponement, Conway will honor fans’ tickets for future dates as he recovers from his injuries. “If u already bought tickets they’ll be honored at the later dates for sure! More updates coming this week. I appreciate all the love and concern for my well-being, love y’all,” he wrote.

Conway’s “album of the year” claim refers to his newly released project Won’t He Do It. In an interview with Billboard earlier this month, Conway spoke about the 14-track collection. “I think about all that God has blessed me with and done for me. I think about where I came from, where I started this journey, and I know I’m far from finished and far from completing my journey,” he shared. “But just looking back and seeing where I’m at now, it’s unthinkable what I’ve been doing and where this journey has taken me. It’s just amazing.”

Won’t He Do It is the predecessor to his acclaimed 2022 effort God Don’t Make Mistakes, which was deemed one of the best hip-hop projects by Billboard last year.

Universal Music Partners With AI Company to Win Sleep Playlists

Earlier this year, Oleg Stavitsky, co-founder/CEO of Endel, laid out a vision for how his company’s AI-driven functional soundscapes could help the major labels — even as anxiety around AI was reaching new heights. “We can process the stems [the audio building blocks of a track] from Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue and come back with a functional sleep version of that album,” Stavitsky told Billboard. At the time, he said his company was in talks with all the major labels about this possibility.

A few short months later, Stavitsky will have a chance to do exactly that: Endel announced a new partnership with Universal Music Group on Tuesday (May 23). In a statement, Endel’s CEO said his company will put “AI to work and help UMG build new and exciting offerings to promote wellness and banish the perceived threat around AI.”

“Our goal was always to help people focus, relax, and sleep with the power of sound,” Stavitsky added. “AI is the perfect tool for this. Today, seeing our technology being applied to turn your favorite music into functional soundscapes is a dream come true.” Artists from Republic and Interscope will be the first to participate — though the announcement omitted any names — with their soundscapes arriving “within the next few months.”

Endel focuses on creating “sound that is not designed for conscious listening,” Stavitsky told Billboard earlier this year. “Music is something you consciously listen to when you actually want to listen to a song or an album or a melody,” he explained. “What we produce is something that blends with the background and is scientifically engineered to put you in a certain cognitive state.”

Endel’s technology can spit out these soundscapes effectively at the click of a button. “The model is trained using the stems that are either produced in-house by our team, led by co-founder and chief composer Dmitry Evgrafov (who’s himself an established neo-classical artist), or licensed from artists that we’ve worked with,” Stavitsky said. “The trick is all of the stems” — Endel has used stems from James Blake, Miguel and Grimes —”are created following the scientific framework created by our product team in consultation with neuroscientists.”

Some people in the music industry have taken to calling sounds designed for sleep, study, or soothing frayed nerves “functional music.” And while it maintains a low profile, it’s an increasingly popular and lucrative space. “Science tells us that nature sounds and water sounds have a calming effect on your cognitive state,” Stavitsky noted this winter. “So naturally, people are turning to this type of content more and more.”

Early in 2022, Endel estimated that the size of the functional music market is 10 billions streams a month across all platforms. (The company has since raised its estimate to 15 billion streams a month.) If true, that would mean functional music is several times more popular than the biggest superstars. “Every day, hundreds of millions of people are self-medicating with sound,” Stavitsky wrote in March. “If you look at the top 10 most popular playlists at any major streaming service, you’ll see at least 3-4 ‘functional’ playlists: meditation, studying, reading, relaxation, focus, sleep, and so on.”

But this has caused the music industry some concern. Major labels have not historically focused on making this kind of music. Most streaming services pay rights holders according to their share of total plays; when listeners turn to functional music to read a book or wind down after a long day, that means they’re not playing major label artists, and the companies make less money. In a memo to staff in January, UMG CEO Lucian Grainge complained that “consumers are increasingly being guided by algorithms to lower-quality functional content that in some cases can barely pass for ‘music.’”

But record companies can’t eliminate listener demand for functional music. It makes sense, then, that they would try to take over a chunk of the market. And Stavitsky has been savvy, actively pushing Endel’s technology as a way for the labels to “win back market share.”

Back in 2019, Endel entered into a distribution agreement for 20 albums with Warner Music Group. And the company announced its new partnership with UMG this week. In a statement, Michael Nash, UMG’s evp and chief digital officer, praised Endel’s “impressive ingenuity and scientific innovation.”

“We are excited to work together,” Nash continued, “and utilize their patented AI technology to create new music soundscapes — anchored in our artist-centric philosophy — that are designed to enhance audience wellness, powered by AI that respects artists’ rights in its development.”

Riser House Records Signs LANCO to Artist Roster

Riser House Records has signed LANCO, welcoming the group to its artist roster.

Known for the two-week No. 1 Billboard Country Airplay hit “Greatest Love Story,” from the group’s 2018 debut album Hallelujah Nights, LANCO also earned an Academy of Country Music Award for new duo or group of the year, in addition to nominations at the CMT Music Awards, CMA Awards and more.

In addition to the new label signing, LANCO has revealed its upcoming single, “Sound of a Saturday Night,” out Friday, June 2. The song is the band’s first new release since 2022’s “Low Class Lovers.” The new music ushers in a new era for LANCO, which is now a quartet that consists of Brandon Lancaster, Tripp Howell, Jared Hampton and Chandler Baldwin as of 2022.

“We are so thrilled to work with LANCO,” says Riser House Entertainment president and co-founder Jennifer Johnson via a statement. “They are a great group of humans with a vast fanbase. Brandon Lancaster has a clear vision and path for their brand and sound. Their music is uniquely compelling and we are excited to take them to the next level.”

“We spent the past couple of years writing with each other and some of our favorite songwriters, getting back in the studio with Jay Joyce and pushing ourselves harder than we ever have to make music that represents who we are today,” adds LANCO. “Riser House shares our vision for the future and we couldn’t be more thankful for an incredible team that will help us introduce this new chapter of LANCO to the world. We back.”

Lenny Kravitz, Billie Eilish, H.E.R. and Jon Batiste Team for ‘Power Our Planet: Live In Paris’ Concert

On June 22, some of today’s most celebrated musicians will play a free concert at Paris’ iconic Champ de Mars at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. The ticketed event — Power Our Planet: Live In Paris, headlined by Lenny Kravitz, Billie Eilish, H.E.R. and Jon Batiste (who boast a collective 21 Grammys between them) with special guests Ben Harper, FINNEAS and Mosimann – is part of Global Citizen’s campaign for world leaders to make serious, meaningful commitments at the Summit for a New Global Financial Pact, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on June 22-23.

While Global Citizen has been holding global concerts for over a decade now, CEO and co-founder Hugh Evans says the stakes are as high as they’ve ever been for our planet. “The last few years have been a disaster for progress on climate change,” Evans bluntly states. “This is the critical year.”

With real-life examples of climate catastrophe becoming regular news headlines and the overwhelming scientific consensus warning us that it will only get worse in our lifetimes without immediate action, Global Citizen is laser-focused on bridging the financial gap between the richest countries and the poorest, most climate-vulnerable nations. And while President Biden brought the U.S. back into the Paris Agreement in 2021 and U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen has described climate change as an “existential threat,” Evans says far from enough is being done tackle the global threat.

“Everyone likes the talk about climate change but that’s part of what makes it such a problem – only a certain amount of real tangible actions will lead to real outcomes,” Evans says. “I’m honestly shocked more climate advocates aren’t racing to address this issue.”

“The next generation are inheriting a planet that’s being devastated by climate change,” says Kravitz. “We have the power to change things with our voices and our actions. Join me on June 22, from wherever you are, and act today to save tomorrow.”

Although Congress remains in gridlock over debt ceiling talks, Evans says the Biden administration – Yellen in particular – has the ability to make an immediate change just by picking up a phone.

“If [Yellen] signaled to the World Bank that the U.S. will continue to fund the World Bank, that increases the ability of the World Bank to loan more. Do they believe the U.S. is committed long term to the World Bank’s success? If they do, they can lend more and that money can be immediately deployed to tackle climate change.”

Pointing to emerging markets such as Barbados and Myanmar, Evans says they “can’t afford to transition straight to clean energy” without loans. “We’re pragmatic activists looking at data, at all the facts, and asking what can make the biggest impact for the world’s poor right now?” The answer, he says, is bridging the $26 billion finance gap. And that number isn’t quite as imposing as it may sound. Not only are some countries sitting on a combined $16.7 billion in promised climate financing to lower-income countries which hasn’t yet been deployed, but Evans says the World Bank’s “appalling” equity-to-loan radio in 2022 meant “they were sitting on $25 billion in uninvested capital.”

A call from Yellen to incoming World Bank President Ajay Banga (who takes over in June) would begin to bridge that gap. “The U.S. administration has the ability to pull these levers relatively easily by signaling to ratings agencies that they will continue to invest in the World Bank, like they have since the Second World War,” Evans says. “That signal has a huge impact on confidence and the ability of the World Bank to lend more. The U.S. Treasury has to play a bigger role and the White House has to take a greater role.”

The path toward that greater role begins June 22 in Paris, which hosts the Summit for a New Global Financial Pact as well as the Power Our Planet: Live In Paris concert. Lucky attendees of the concert event, which is produced by Live Nation, will have earned tickets by taking actions through the Global Citizen app. “The tickets drive hundreds of thousands of actions,” Evans says, while the concert itself and its A-list participants help put pressure on global leaders and corporations to commit to tackling the climate crisis.

Maggie Baird, whose Grammy-nabbing children Billie Eilish and FINNEAS are both performing at the June 22 Paris event, recently told Billboard about her climate activism and the music industry’s ability to make a difference. “One of the things I did with Billie from the beginning was push the music industry to be more sustainably minded. I think the music industry is special in a lot of ways,” she said. “They have direct artist to fan connection — other forms of entertainment, not so much. A musician has a real heart-to-heart connection with their fans.”

For those who aren’t attending, Power Our Planet, Live In Paris will be livestreamed on Global Citizen’s social media platforms on June 22 as well as on Amazon Music’s Twitch channel.

LL Cool J Headed to ‘NCIS: Hawai’i’ Next Season

LL Cool J is hanging up his badge on the mainland, but come next season, the veteran rapper/actor will be investigating crimes in an equally sunny, surfy locale. In a tweet on Monday night (May 22), LL wrote “Let’s do this!!!,” along with an arm flex, lightning bolt and fire emoji after NCIS: Hawai’i star Vanessa Lachey tweeted, “Cat’s out of the bag. Welcome @LLCOOLJ to our #NCISHawaii ohana!” along with a photo of her smiling next to LL.

In a second tweet, LL explained his long-running NCIS: Los Angeles character Sam Hanna’s jump from the City of Angels after a 14-year run with the NCIS franchise to his new island home. “Couldn’t keep Sam Hanna off the case for too long!!,” he wrote. “Starting tonight, Sam Hanna will join forces with @NCISHawaiiCBS team as a recurring guest star in the upcoming third season.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Monday night’s season two finale of NCIS: Hawai’i found Lachey’s Jane Tennant and Tori Anderson’s Kate Whistler under attack in Venezuela until an offscreen ally comes to their aid when Jane’s phone rings and LL’s Hanna is on the other end. The rapper’s character was last seen in the Moroccan desert in Sunday night’s series finale of NCIS: Los Angeles.

Tennant thanks Hanna for the hand, with Hanna noting that he was “in the neighborhood… Morocco, actually, but hey — what’s a few borders and an ocean, anyway?” The long-distance cameo is a preview of LL’s upcoming recurring role in the upcoming 2023-24 NCIS: Hawai’i season, where he will reprise his role as Hanna; LL previously appeared on the show in a cameo crossover earlier this season.

“One of the most beautiful things about working on NCIS: Hawai’i is the show’s ability to bring the franchise together. We have had so much fun spreading the aloha to NCIS and NCIS: LA with the triple crossover,” Lachey said of LL’s previous cameo. “Now, we have the amazing opportunity to bring Sam Hanna to Hawai’i to help the island solve some cases and maybe have a few laughs in the process. Welcome to the ohana, Todd! It’s going to be a fun ride!”

Cam’ron was known for hot takes way before his sports show. He has just confirmed his back and forth with Ben Gordon are not serious at all.

As spotted on HipHopDX the Harlem, New York native is making his rounds to promote his new hit show It Is What It Is. During an interview with Good Day New York’s veteran anchorwoman Rosanna Scotto the two discussed a variety of topics including how the new platform brought he and MA$E back together in a great way. He explained he offered him the co-host seat as a thank you.

“MA$E got me my first record deal, ever. So doing this show and creating this show and having him be a part of it, it felt like I’m giving back to him for helping me even be an entertainer” Cam’ron explained. “I may not have been where I’m at if [Ma$e] didn’t take me to Biggie Smalls and get me my first record deal. I wanted to pay him back, and hopefully, this show will do that.”

Rosanna also made sure to ask about his ongoing feud with former NBA baller Ben Gordon. Cam went to reveal their back and forth was never that serious. “So look, let me explain what happened with Ben Gordon,” he explained. “It’s funny, my brother is over there who started this whole thing. So I did a report on Ben Gordon and I’m not going to talk about Ben — wassup, Ben?”. At the end of the day it was all jokes. “It’s all fun and games, at least on my behalf. I think it’s all fun and games. I don’t have a problem with Ben.”

Metallica Singer James Hetfield Visits Wounded Ukrainian Soldiers in Hospital

In the midst of a week off from Metallica‘s recently launched European leg of their M72 world tour, singer/guitarist James Hetfield took some time to visit an injured Ukrainian soldier who is receiving treatment at Vail Health Hospital in the singer’s Colorado hometown. As reported by the Vail Daily, Ukrainian serviceman Roman Denysiuk was brought to the Vail Valley for treatment through the local non-profit Limbs For Liberty on May 11 after a fall from his wheelchair that resulted in him re-fracturing his femur and necessitating surgery to repair the leg.

During his recovery, Limbs For Liberty co-founder Kelli Rohrig visited Denysiuk and while getting out of her car she ran into Hetfield in the parking lot. Rohrig described Denysiuk’s situation to the singer and asked if he had time to visit the soldier. Hetfield said yes and reportedly met with Denysiuk and another Ukrainian patient, Igor Voinyi.

“Metallica’s songs are very popular in Ukraine,” said the men’s translator, Olga Milinan. “Growing up, we all listened to them and dreamed of seeing them.” The paper also noted that when the men were asked if they were familiar with Metallica, they rolled their eyes assured her, “Yes, of course.”

“It was unexpected,” Voinyi told the paper. “I didn’t even believe it at the first moment that it was him. It was very short, but it was a very warm meeting. It would be nice to meet him at a campfire and have a drink, instead of the hospital.”

Milinan said that during the pop-in Hetfield “wished the men luck and get better soon.” Hetfield reportedly appreciated the opportunity, leaving a sticky note on Rohrig’s car that read, “You made my day.” Just month after the year-plus beginning of Russia’s unprovoked war on Ukraine, Metallica donated $500,000 to World Central Kitchen through their All Within My Hands charitable foundation to help feed Ukrainian refugees. Limbs For Liberty works with doctors and physical therapists to create prosthetics for Ukrainians who’ve lost limbs in war.

Metallica will hit the road again on Friday (May 26) with a show at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, Germany.
