Here’s What the Jonas Brothers Almost Named ‘The Album’

Jonas Brothers took to social media on Tuesday (May 23) to reveal the alternate title the band almost chose for their new studio set The Album.

The pop trio shared the nugget after one fan asked on Twitter, “If The Album wasn’t called the album what would you name it,” prompting them to reply, “We actually almost named it ‘Blue Jeans and Marijuana.’”

The line is borrowed from the opening lyrics of album cut “Americana,” on which they sing, “Americana, blue jeans and marijuana/ Type of friends that show their love by picking on ya/ On the phone or on the lawn or on the corner/ Springsteen to Billie Jean,” over plucky acoustic guitar.

Plenty of Jonatics replied to the tweet with their own ideas for The Album’s other titles, including “The 7th Album” in hilarious reference to the bridge of the JoBros’ early hit “Year 3000.” (“I took a trip to the year 3000/ This song had gone multi-platinum/ Everybody bought our seventh album/ It had outsold Kelly Clarkson.”)

Containing singles “Wings” and “Waffle House,” The Album bowed at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 (chart dated May 27) behind Morgan Wallen’s seemingly unstoppable One Thing at a Time and Taylor Swift’s Midnights and also earned the trio their fourth consecutive No. 1 on the Top Album Sales chart, following 2008’s A Little Bit Longer, 2009’s Lines, Vines & Trying Times and their 2019 comeback effort Happiness Begins.

On Tuesday night, the JoBros are set to return to their New Jersey roots for a special concert at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City ahead of kicking off their North American tour in support of The Album later this summer with two back-to-back shows at Yankee Stadium.

Reunited Mexican Pop Trio Camila Ends Decadelong Hiatus With New Music & Live Shows

The lyrics of “Fugitivos,” Mexican trio Camila’s first single in a decade, describe the feeling of its reunited members. “It’s never too late for a new beginning,” says the powerful ballad, serving as a reintroduction of Mario Domm (vocals and piano), Samo Parra (vocals) and Pablo Hurtado (guitar) in the trio’s second wind since they reunited back in January.

The reunion of these voices — which in the past filled the Foro Sol in Mexico City and won several Latin Grammys and Billboard Latin Music Awards with songs like “Mientes” and “Aléjate De Mí” — arrives two decades after their foundation, and ten years after they went on a hiatus.

“I sent a message to Samo and he answered the way he is. As soon as I saw his reply, I knew that this was going to happen, that we would be together again,” Domm recalls tearfully in an exclusive interview with Billboard Español.

Camila became a duo in 2013 after Samo departed to pursue a solo career after strenuous tours, four studio albums, and the recognition by the music industry as one of the most successful projects of the ’00s. Under the new format, Domm and Hurtado released the album Elypse in 2014, while Samo debuted as a soloist and put out two albums, Inevitable (2013) and Eterno (2017), as well as the live set Me Quito El Sombrero (2015).

But the real magic happens when the three of them are together, regardless of the potential they each have as musicians: Domm is one of the most celebrated Latin songwriters of his generation, with songs recorded by stars like Alejandra Guzmán, Thalia and Paulina Rubio; Samo’s voice stands out for its elegance, and Hurtado’s guitar adds a touch of rock to Camila’s musical offerings.

And fans seem happy and eager to have them back. Released on March 31 through Sony Music Latin, “Fugitivos” put the Mexican trio back in the top 10 on Billboard’s Latin Pop Airplay, jumping 23-9 on the April 22 chart. It is currently on its second week at No. 5 — Camila’s first top 10 since 2014 and also its first since Samo’s return.

“There have been moments by ourselves, separately, that have made us grow as artists and as human beings,” Samo says, adding that “now that it’s happening … it was a process of recognizing each other all over again.”

In total, Camila has amassed 14 top 10s (three of those hitting No. 1) among its 19 Latin Pop Airplay career entries, dating back to its first, the No. 8 high “Abrázame” in 2006. The Mexicans charted their first No. 1 hit with “Mientes,” which topped the ranking for 10 consecutive weeks in February-May 2010.

Their return comes as regional Mexican music and reggaetón have taken the world by storm with millions of views on YouTube, record numbers on Spotify and No. 1s on the Billboard charts, thanks to superstars like Bad Bunny, Rosalía, Peso Pluma and Karol G. But the trio doesn’t feel pressure and opts to flow with its own style.

“It’s very encouraging for us that the music now ruling is the regional Mexican, the urbano music, not necessarily the pop-rock ballads to which we belong. But there’s a fact I wish to underscore: Watching a Mexican band at the world’s top was unthinkable years ago. Music no longer has borders, it has become globalized,” says Hurtado.

Mario Domm says that “Fugitivos” is the first of other singles Camila plans to release, all part of a new album that would drop later this year.

While that happens, the band has announced three concerts in Mexico to celebrate their return to the stage, starting Oct. 14 at the Telmex Auditorium in Guadalajara, and following Oct. 15 at the National Auditorium in Mexico City and Dec. 1 at the Arena Monterrey, in the northern Mexican city.

“With the people’s energy, I feel that this is where we’re going to break,” Domm adds. “That’s where the best part of this all will begin.”

BABYMONSTER Reaches No. 1, The Color Purple’ Trailer, ‘The Idol’ at Cannes & More | Billboard News

Nick Jonas looked back on his off-key performance at the 2016 Academy of Country Music Awards on an episode of ‘Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard.’ Warner Bros. unveiled the trailer for the big-screen musical adaptation of ‘The Color Purple’ starring Halle Bailey, H.E.R., Fantasia and more. ‘The Idol’ received a standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival. Davido stopped by the studio to talk about Forbes calling him “The King of Afrobeats,” how he created his album ‘Timeless’ and more!

TETRIS KELLY:
‘The Idol’ premiere slays at Cannes, a trailer drops for ‘The Color Purple,’ and a Nick Jonas performance sends him to therapy. Plus, we hang out with Davido and Evaluna and a new K-pop girl group rules Trending Songs. It’s Tuesday, May 23rd. I’m Tetris and this is Billboard News. Let’s jump into your top story.

Nick Jonas says his 2016 ACM performance with Kelsey Ballerini sent him to therapy. Let’s get into it.

NICK JONAS:
“It was like a really traumatic moment that shaped the pressure I put on myself to be perfect and to always be on.”

TETRIS KELLY:
The Jonas Brothers stopped by ‘The Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard’ podcast on Monday, where Nick talked about the moment his guitar solo went terribly wrong during Kelsea Ballerini’s performance at the 2016 ACM Awards.

NICK JONAS:
“I started off, it’s fine. And as I sort of walked towards her, I just went completely blank. And I hit a wrong note and blacked out basically and clocked that-“

MONICA PADMAN: “Oh my God!”

NICK JONAS:
“…it was wrong. And I couldn’t stop. To this day, and like hours of unpacking it, I can’t really figure out exactly what happened.”

TETRIS KELLY:
That moment took place right in the middle of the JoBros break when Nick put out two solo projects and before the brothers reunited in 2019.

NICK JONAS:
“In retrospect, I can kind of like laugh about how big I thought it was, but it did travel more than I wish it would have. And it did cause me to go into therapy.”

TETRIS KELLY:
And now we update you on musicians that are also conquering TV and film. Halle Bailey shows us that wearing Ariel’s purple fins won’t be the only time she hits the big screen in 2023. Plus, The Weeknd, Jennie of BLACKPINK, Troye Sivan, and more are at the premiere of HBOs ‘The Idol’ at Cannes and we’ll be chatting with the pop star.

Warner Bros. has unveiled a trailer for the big screen musical adaptation of ‘The Color Purple’ and it stars Halle Bailey and she’s joined by superstars H.E.R., Fantasia, Ciara, Taraji P Henson, and more. The musical is scheduled to hit theaters on Christmas Day.

We’ve all been obsessed with the new show ‘The Idol’ before its premiere on June 4th, but we’re even more obsessed with the stars’ red carpet look at Cannes. Jennie slayed, giving preppy realness. The Weeknd gave classic Abel while Lily-Rose Depp dazzled, and Troye Sivan was a fashion king per usual. We’ll be chatting with Troye about the show, make sure you stay tuned.

Now let’s get to our interview with Davido. He’s an Afrobeats superstar and he’s even spreading the wealth.

RANIA ANIFTOS:
You have the most first-day streams of any African artists on Apple Music and Spotify. What is it like to represent your home country in such a successful way?

DAVIDO:
I mean, it was dope. We just made the album, you know, with low criteria. We just wanted to just go into the studio and make good music. Like we didn’t plug most of them, you know what I’m saying? We’re just like natural vibes, you know, in the studio, not putting pressure. You know, even when picking the records. You know, normally I’d pick the whole album myself or like I’m very, very sensitive. So I pick 17 songs out of like, 68.

RANIA ANIFTOS:
How do you even go about picking the songs like?

DAVIDO:
So we kind of like made up this formula where I send songs to like everybody, like even my friends. So I was like everybody votes. And it kind of worked out.

RANIA ANIFTOS:
What was the one song that was kind of common throughout everybody’s list?

DAVIDO:
Definitely ‘Unavailable’.

RANIA ANIFTOS:
It’s cool too that you get to also work with other artists.

DAVIDO:
There’s this girl I found on the internet, she was doing like a cover to a song. And then I DM’d her. I’m like, “Yo, your voice is amazing.”

RANIA ANIFTOS:
Wow.

DAVIDO:
And she doesn’t even believe like I’m the one talking to her.

RANIA ANIFTOS:
And now she’s on a record-breaking album with you.

DAVIDO:
Yeah, and I signed her too!

TETRIS KELLY:
You can find the full interview at Billboard.com

But now, let’s jump into what you guys are talking about on Twitter.

New K-pop girl group BABYMONSTER sends its pre-debut single to No. 1.

BABYMONSTER may be new to the scene but they’re already making waves by sending their pre-debut single ‘Dream’ to the top of Billboard’s Hot Trending Songs chart powered by Twitter. The YG-signed girl group debuted ‘Dream’ exclusively on YouTube last week, and it’s already racked up over 30 million global views. An official debut for BABYMONSTER is set for this fall. But details about the premiere are under wraps.

NewJeans member Danielle debuted her version of “Part of Your World’ from ‘The Little Mermaid’ and it bows at No. 2. Her rendition is the Korean language companion to Halle’s performance in the Disney live-action film hitting theaters May 26th.

Elsewhere on the charts Taeyong’s ‘Shalala,’ the title track of the NCT member’s mini album of the same name, sits at No. 3, while the Foo Fighters and Lana Del Rey round out the top five.

Billboard’s Hot Trending Songs Chart powered by Twitter tracks global music-related trends and conversations in real-time across Twitter. Viewable over the last 24 hours or the past seven days.

BRIAN KELLEY:
Hey, it’s Brian Kelley. I’m super excited to speak at Billboard Live Country in Conversation on June 7th, right here in Nashville. Make sure you get your tickets right now. It’s gonna be a dang good time.

TETRIS KELLY:
And lastly, we love Evaluna here at Billboard. And we found out five things you might not know about the Latin star.

EVALUNA MONTANER:

TETRIS KELLY:
That’s it, come back tomorrow to hang out with us and K-Pop star LØren. See you then!

Lana Del Rey’s Father Is Loving Being the ‘First Nepo Daddy’

Talent runs in the family! Lana Del Rey‘s 69-year-old father Rob Grant is gearing up to unveil his debut album, Lost at Sea, on June 9.

The boat-loving dad chatted with GQ about working with his superstar daughter while making music. “She’ll start singing and the songs will come together magically, but in a very beautiful, organic, intuitive way,” he shares. “There’s no planning.”

“It’s so cool to create music with my daughter,” he added. “Because we really are very simpatico.”

As for being potentially the world’s first nepo daddy in a world of nepo babies, Rob has no problem with accepting the honor. “The nepo daddy thing I love,” he said, noting that he first saw the phrase in his Instagram comment section. “I thought, ‘My God, this would make really cool merch.’”

He added, “I’m happy to be the first nepo daddy.”

Lana, meanwhile, dropped her ninth studio album, Did You Know That There’s A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, in March and the set went to No. 3 on the Billboard 200, marking her ninth appearance in the top 10. Tunnel was co-produced by Del Rey alongside Mike Hermosa, Jack Antonoff, Drew Erickson, Zach Dawes and Benji, and includes assists from Jon Batiste, Bleachers, Father John Misty, Judah Smith, Tommy Genesis and SYML.

The singer-songwriter also unveiled “Say Yes to Heaven” last week, which was written a decade ago and circulated online for almost two years.

Fans Are Freaking Out Over BLACKPINK’s Lisa & BTS’ V Posing for Pics Together in Cannes

K-pop stars have officially taken over Cannes. Just hours after BLACKPINK‘s Jennie made her debut at the Cannes Film Festival, her fellow groupmate Lisa got fans talking after posing for pictures with V of BTS.

On Monday night, Celine’s artistic director Heidi Slimane brought together the K-pop stars for a dinner party hosted at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cannes. Lisa and V — who are both ambassadors for the French luxury brand — were in attendance at the event and posed alongside each other for a quick photo. The BLACKPINK rapper dazzled in a sequined, pinstriped suit jacket and matching trouser, while the BTS vocalist donned a black jacket with a sequin bow and black trousers.

Fans, naturally, were excited to see the two K-pop idols together in the same space. One fan wrote on Twitter, “MY TWO FAVS BOTH STUNNING,” while another pondered “how can [it] be possible two people being so beautiful and unique.”

A third Twitter user hilariously commented, “lisa with her brother in law” — a timely comment, considering that Jennie and V are currently the subject of dating rumors and set the Internet ablaze last week when fans believed they were spotted holding hands with each other while out for an evening stroll in Paris. (Representatives for Jennie and V did not respond to Billboard‘s request for comment at the time, and it was never confirmed to be the K-pop stars.)

As for the rest of the of the BLACKPINK members, Rosé made her Cannes debut last week on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the guys of BTS are currently working on the solo endeavors or completing military service.

Beyoncé’s Dad Wants Destiny’s Child to Reunite for ‘One Last Album’

Baby, can you handle this? It’s been 17 years since Destiny’s Child went on hiatus, but if Mathew Knowles had his way, he’d be all for the pioneering girl group getting back together.

“It’s a decision that the ladies would have to make,” Beyoncé‘s father said to Entertainment Tonight on Monday (May 23). “And I would certainly, certainly support that decision as I still manage Destiny’s Child. I would love to see that as well.”

Of course, the trio have reunited multiple times since the release of their 2004 album Destiny Fulfilled and 2005 greatest hits compilation #1s, including an unforgettable appearance during Beyoncé’s headlining Coachella set in 2018. Over the years, they’ve also teamed up for 2013’s “You Changed” off Kelly Rowland‘s Talk a Good Game and Michelle Williams‘ 2014 gospel single “Say Yes” as well as appearances in the visual album for Bey’s 2015 self-titled studio set Beyoncé.

“I think the fans will be just overjoyed, overwhelmed,” the elder Knowles continued. “And hopefully they do one last time in their career. Hopefully they give us one last album. Who knows? You never know. You never say it can’t happen. Because this is entertainment. A lot of things can happen.”

Of course, any chance for an official reunion would have to wait, considering Beyoncé just kicked off her electric Renaissance World Tour in Stockholm, Sweden earlier this month — though considering she’s included Destiny’s Child single “Cater 2 U” on the setlist, it wouldn’t be completely outside the realm of possibility for fans hope that Michelle and Kelly might make a surprise appearance somewhere along the tour route to perform the slow jam with their bestie and bandmate.

Conway The Machine Says Therapy Helps Him With Music

HipHopWired Featured Video

Conway The Machine

Conway The Machine is one of the most talented rappers of his generation and arguably its best representative in some circles. With a renewed sense of vigor, the gruff-voiced Buffalo, N.Y. star shared in an interview that therapy aided him in creating some of the best music of his career.

Conway The Machine sat down with Zane Lowe for Apple Music in support of his latest body of work, Won’t He Do It. The sound on the new project is decidedly more polished and upbeat than some of Conway’s earlier work although he’s shown his sonic diversity several times in his ongoing career.

At one pivotal point during the chat with Lowe, Conway gave credit to therapy getting him to a point of appreciating his formidable gifts and the success it helped him achieve.

“Growing up in a hood and stuff, and particularly with young men and just in the communities and stuff, we look at wanting to get therapy or stuff like that, it’s like a, I don’t know, a slight, I guess or, we look at it like it’s a weakness or something,” Conway shared.

“But I realized quick that it really wasn’t. It was actually very helpful. You know what I’m saying? And got me to this point to where I’m back making music, I think some of my best music.”

Emerging from the Griselda camp and released several acclaimed projects over the past few years, these days Conway The Machine is the founder of the Drumwork Music Group, a stacked recording label featuring talented standouts rappers 7xvethegenius (said Lovethegenius) and Jae Skeese.

Joe Jonas Shares a Taylor Swift Relationship Update, 15 Years After Their Breakup

Taylor Swift and Joe Jonas’ relationship was chronicled in several personal songs featured on Swift’s 2008 sophomore album Fearless. In the time since, the two have managed to move on — but what is the true status of their relationship now?

The Jonas Brothers singer gave curious Swifties an update on the Monday episode of Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast.

“I’m cool with Taylor,” Jonas told Shepard. “We’re cool.” He added of her very loyal fanbase: “I hope to think they like me … No one f—s with the Swifties, you know?”

Jonas and Swift dated between July and October of 2008; the pair’s relationship infamously ended when the Disney Channel alum broke up with his ex through a brief phone call — a move Swift publicly shaded during a 2008 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

“When I find that person that is right for me he’ll be wonderful and when I look at that person, I’m not even gonna be able to remember the boy who broke up with me over the phone in 25 seconds when I was 18,” she told the talk-show host at the time.

Fans can now hear Swift’s perspective on the breakup in Fearless‘ “Forever & Always,” which she confirmed was about Jonas following their split, but he insists their drama from then is a relic of the past. “It’s been many, many years removed,” he told Shepard.

Listen to Jonas’ appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast in full below.
