Gloria Trevi, Grupo Firme & More: What’s Your Favorite New Latin Music Release? Vote!

This week, our New Music Latin roundup — a compilation of the best new Latin songs and albums recommended by Billboard‘s Latin and Billboard Español editors — is powered by new music from Gloria Trevi, David Bisbal, Boza and many more.

Though he’s still rooted in the reggae plena sound that made him a household name, Panamanian singer Boza gets experimental on his new 13-track set Sin Sol, including collaborations with Dalex, Beéle and Kenia Os. Gloria Trevi does not stay behind either with “Medusa,” a techno dance track where she’s heard owning her radical artistic approach, embodying a mythical figure and singing of rattlesnakes and venom. “This new stage is very exciting for me,” Trevi said in a statement to Billboard Español. “With our label, I will be able to have more investment, open new markets, and work with dream collaborations. I love being the head of my own label now.”

Michael Cera Reflects on Rihanna Slapping Him: ‘I Don’t Think It Took Much Convincing’

Acting, singing and getting slapped across the face by global superstar Rihanna — what can’t Michael Cera do? The Tony Award-nominated actor took some time to reflect on the filming process for his 2013 film This Is the End in a new interview with Rolling Stone.

“I thought it would look a lot better if she hit me. I don’t think it took much convincing to get her to do it,” the Barbie actor joked. “I just thought it would look a lot better than a fake slap would because you can really feel it. It just looks a lot funnier!”

In the scene, Cera’s character slaps the derrière of Rihanna’s character, who then slaps him across the face in return. Allegedly, Rihanna agreed to let Cera actually slap her backside on the condition that she could slap him in the face. “I definitely did not regret it! I was into it,” Cera said.

The Superbad star continued, “The take that is in the movie, she really did hit my ear, which was disorienting. But I have no regrets. I didn’t lose any hearing over it, fortunately!” This Is the End, a Seth Rogen-helmed apocalyptic black comedy that also starred Jonah Hill, Emma Watson, Kevin Hart, Backstreet Boys, Paul Rudd, Mindy Kaling and Channing Tatum, grossed $126 million at the worldwide box office.

In addition to his acting endeavors, Michael Cera also made his formal music debut in 2014. The indie folk album, titled True That, featured 21 tracks written, produced, engineered and mixed entirely by Cera himself. Rihanna, who, of course, needs no introduction, boasts 14 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and a pair of chart-topping albums on the Billboard 200.

Brooklyn rapper Casanova is in a world of trouble, and he hopes to get some form of leniency from the judge ahead of his sentencing.

Spotted on HipHopDx, via AllHipHop, Casanova penned a letter to Judge Philip Halpern in hopes of getting a more lenient sentence. In the heartfelt letter, the “So Brooklyn” rapper renounced his ties to the Gorilla Stone Nation and admitted to having suicidal thoughts.

Per HipHopDX:

“I am telling you and anyone that will listen that I wanted out before I was arrested, and I am out. I learned through my music career that people will listen and that I don’t need to associate myself with a gang to succeed. I don’t need to associate with a gang even if I don’t succeed,” he wrote.

“While I have been in here I lost my father to cancer. While I put on that strong facade, all I wanted to do was end it. Surviving on Rikers Island and upstate correctional facilities were not easy with racial and gang tension and violence at its height.”

Casanova continued: “I thought I needed to stay in the life in name because it was a way to promote my career. I don’t care what the government tells you. I am telling you the truth. I was not involved in the daily activities of this gang. I wasn’t anyone’s boss.

“What I was and I regret this was a person that they could use to promote themselves in a world I swear to you I was trying to leave. I clearly did not do a good enough job of this as I did find myself in one bad situation after another.”

After being one of the 18 alleged Untouchable Gorilla Stone Nation gang members named in a drug conspiracy RICO investigation, he has been behind bars since December 2020.

Casanova Is Looking At Some Serious Jail Time

In May 2022, Casanova pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy and narcotics conspiracy despite maintaining his innocence. In his guilty plea, he admitted to trafficking at least 100 kilograms of marijuana and being a signal caller. He also admitted to his involvement in a 2018 NYC robbery that severely hurt a woman and a July 2020 Florida shooting.

If the judge throws the book at him, he’s looking at 60 years behind bars, 15 years minimum.

Morgan Wallen Has the Two Longest-Leading Country Airplay No. 1s of the 2020s

Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” tops Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated June 24) for a seventh consecutive, and total, week – as he now boasts the two longest-leading No. 1s on the chart this decade. His single “You Proof” ruled for a record 10 weeks beginning last October.

In the tracking week ending June 15, “Last Night” earned 33 million audience impressions (down 2%) on Country Airplay chart reporters, according to Luminate.

The song (on Mercury/Republic/Big Loud), which John Byron, Ashley Gorley, Jacob Kasher Hindlin and Ryan Vojtesak co-wrote, became Wallen’s ninth Country Airplay leader (on the May 13 chart).

“Last Night” ties for the fourth-longest Country Airplay command. Here’s a look at the longest-leading No. 1s since the survey began in January 1990.

Notably, Wallen and Chesney are the only acts with two Country Airplay No. 1s to reign for at least seven weeks each.

Meanwhile, “Last Night” has crossed over to pop and adult radio, marking Wallen’s first top 10 on both Adult Pop Airplay and Pop Airplay, as it rises to Nos. 8 and 9 on the June 24-dated tallies, respectively. The song has also crowned the all-genre, multi-metric Billboard Hot 100 for 10 weeks running.

New Top 10s

Jelly Roll banks his second Country Airplay top 10 as “Need a Favor” pushes 12-9 (17.5 million, up 13%). The song is the lead single from the his inaugural country album, Whitsitt Chapel, which arrived at No. 2 on the June 17 Top Country Albums with 90,000 units – the largest week for an initial entry since the chart transitioned to a consumption-based methodology (from one based on pure sales) in February 2017.

“Favor” follows “Son of a Sinner,” which became Jelly Roll’s first Country Airplay No. 1, in his first appearance on the chart, in January. Concurrently, he has another song on the latest list, as “Save Me,” with Lainey Wilson, climbs 50-48 (1.2 million, up 2%).

Plus, Jon Pardi nets his 10th Country Airplay top 10 as “Your Heart or Mine” rises 11-10 (17.3 million, up 7%). It follows “Last Night Lonely,” which became his fifth No. 1 last September.

Jelly Roll’s ‘Need a Favor’ Makes History on Billboard Rock, Country Charts

Jelly Roll achieves a first on Billboard’s charts as “Need a Favor” rises from No. 12 to No. 9 on the Country Airplay tally dated June 24, with 17.5 million audience impressions June 9-15 on the ranking’s panel of reporting stations, according to Luminate.

Now that it’s within Country Airplay’s top 10, the song becomes the first ever to have hit the top 10 of both Country Airplay and Mainstream Rock Airplay.

“Need a Favor” concurrently spends a fourth week in a row at its No. 3 high on Mainstream Rock Airplay.

The format-specific radio charts have existed simultaneously since the chart week of Jan. 20, 1990, when Country Airplay began. Mainstream Rock Airplay’s history stretches back to March 21, 1981.

Late last year, Jelly Roll became the eighth act to have scored a top 10 on both charts, albeit with separate songs. He first hit the top 10 of Mainstream Rock Airplay with “Dead Man Walking,” which led for a week in May 2022, while “Son of a Sinner” reached No. 1 on Country Airplay this January.

At the time, the list of other acts who have appeared in the top 10 of both charts included Bon Jovi, Zac Brown Band, Brantley Gilbert, Kid Rock, Dave Matthews (solo on Country Airplay and fronting Dave Matthews Band on Mainstream Rock Airplay), Sting and Travis Tritt.

Since then, a ninth has added his name to the list: HARDY, whose “Jack” reached No. 3 on Mainstream Rock Airplay in March; he has notched three top 10s on Country Airplay.

Of those nine acts, Bon Jovi, Brantley Gilbert, Jelly Roll and Zac Brown Band are the only ones with No. 1 placements on both surveys.

Unlike with the clear crossover appeal of “Need a Favor,” the artists above with top 10 ranks on both charts have largely not had individual songs make both lists. One hit previously reached the top 20 of both tallies: Kid Rock’s “All Summer Long” rose to No. 4 on Country Airplay and No. 17 on Mainstream Rock Airplay in 2008.

In addition to its Mainstream Rock Airplay and Country Airplay success, “Need a Favor” concurrently bullets at its No. 6 best on the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart with 3.3 million audience impressions. In addition to its mainstream rock radio airplay, the song is bubbling under Alternative Airplay.

On the most-recently published, June 17-dated multi-metric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Hot Country Songs charts, “Need a Favor” placed at Nos. 2 and 4, respectively. Along with its airplay, the song earned 11.2 million official streams and sold 7,000 downloads in the United States June 2-8.

“Need a Favor” is the lead single from Whitsitt Chapel, Jelly Roll’s latest studio album, and his first country set. It debuted at Nos. 1 and 2 on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums and Top Country Albums charts dated June 17, respectively, with 90,000 equivalent album units earned.

All charts dated June 24 will update on Billboard.com Wednesday, June 21 (a day later than usual due to the Juneteenth holiday in the U.S. Monday, June 19).

Boza, Sin Sol (Sony Music Latin)

For his third studio album, Sin Sol (Without Sun), Boza traveled across Europe seeking inspiration for his new lyrics and sound — such as beach getaways in Spain and late-night walks in Italy. The set kicks off with “Talismán,” a smooth hip-hop track about a failed “perfect” relationship that highlights his infectious vocal range; followed by “Sin Waze,” a sensual Afrobeats cut about euphoric love; and transitioning to “Pa’ Que Tú Me Vea,” an EDM jam that narrates the story of a man who’s convincing a girl to leave her toxic relationship.

Though he’s still rooted in the reggae plena sound that made him a household name, the Panamanian singer gets experimental on his new 13-track set. “Ay, ay, ay” is unexpected bachata with a touch of flamenco, and more unpredictable elements. The passionate theme begins with some bohemian guitar chords, followed by a beat of castanets merging with the surprising appearance of electric guitar, as well as percussion, güira, and bongos. Although delving into in a non-traditional genre for him, the Spaniard maintains his signature energetic and soulful vocal performance throughout the song. “Ay, ay, ay, I go to bed without your mouth/ And I think ay, ay, ay/ There is no kiss like what you give me/ And I can’t take it anymore if you’re not here/ If you’re not here, if you’re not here,” he sings in the chorus. We now know what led to the tragic passing of Gangsta Boo.

Spotted on TMZ, Gangsta Boo died after ingesting a deadly cocktail of hard drugs and alcohol, the celebrity gossip site reports.

Local Memphis news affiliate, FOX13, says the Hip-Hop star was pronounced dead on the scene after overdosing on fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol.



Gangsta Boo, real name Lola Mitchell, was found unconscious on New Year’s Day inside a Memphis residence and could not be resuscitated despite attempts to save the 43-year-old rapper’s life.

She quickly became a popular artist in the 90s, especially after songs like “Where Dem Dollas At.” Gangsta Boo was also a member of Three 6 Mafia, later joining the iconic Hip-Hop stable founded by DJ Paul, Juicy J, and Lord Infamous. Boo was later brought in along with Crunchy Black and Koopsta Knicca, appearing on the group’s classic albums.

Gangsta Boo was only limited to working with Three 6 Mafia. She also collaborated with other southern Hip-Hop juggernauts, Gucci Mane, Lil Jon, OutKast, E-40, T.I., west coast rapper The Game, and more.

Fentanyl’s Dangerous Hold On The Hip-Hop Community

Gangsta Boo joins an alarming trend of fentanyl-related deaths in the Black and Hip-Hop community. Master P’s daughter, Michael K. Williams, comedian Fuquan Johnson, Coolio, Mac Miller, and many more all have died, and fentanyl was involved in some shape or form.

The Biden-Harris administration is actively working to stop the dangerous flow of opioids and fentanyl in the country.

Per The White House website:

President Biden has made combatting the opioid crisis a key part of his Unity Agenda for America and has taken several actions to reduce both the supply of fentanyl and negative health outcomes associated with illicit fentanyl and other illicit substances. Fentanyl was dangerous before and it is even more dangerous now due to its combination with xylazine. Addressing the fentanyl crisis also requires addressing the drugs—in particular xylazine—with which fentanyl is being combined. Saving lives is the Administration’s North Star and drives the President’s drug policy.

Something needs to be done quickly before we lose more lives.

Is there a better way to welcome the summer than lounging around by the pool? Absolutely not, as Coco and her daughter proved on Instagram Wednesday (June 14). The TV personality, actress and wife of Grammy-winning rapper Ice-T shared adorable pictures of herself and daughter Chanel enjoying some pool time in matching hot pink bikinis.

Coco flaunted her curves in an eye-popping bathing suit as she posed alongside the 7-year-old. “First day on vacation!” Coco captioned the post. “Keeping Chanel and mines matching flow going!”

The model also thanked SugarDollz, a company that specializes in handmade mommy-and-me swimwear. With the help of their own custom bikinis, Coco and Chanel took the pool by storm on their family vacation — the mommy daughter-duo even had matching pink sarongs and messy updos.

Although Ice-T was not present for these bikini pics, the rapper and star of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (which wife Coco has guest starred on) has recently been more involved in Coco and Chanel’s social media posts. In February, he appeared in one of their TikToks for the very first time — the same month he graced the stage at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards to help celebrate the 50-year anniversary of hip-hop.

On the Billboard Hot 100, Ice-T has scored two entries: 1988’s “Colors” (No. 70) and 1991’s “New Jack Hustler” (No. 67). Over on the Billboard 200, the “O.G. Original Gangster” rapper has landed six titles so far, with 1993’s Home Invasion (No. 14) reaching the highest peak. As a part of the heavy metal band Body Count, Ice-T has earned two top 10 sets on Top Hard Rock Albums: 2014’s Manslaughter (No. 8) and 2017’s Bloodlust (No. 8).
