Kool & the Gang’s George Brown Sells Publishing Catalog Stake to Primary Wave

Primary Wave has purchased a stake in the publishing catalog of Kool & The Gang founding band member and drummer George Brown, the company announced Wednesday (June 28). The sale also includes a stake in the Grammy winner’s writer’s share of his music publishing and the writer’s share of his public performance income.

The deal — which includes classics like “Ladies Night,” “Celebration,” “Get Down on It,” “Cherish,” “Jungle Boogie,” “Summer Madness” and more — is in the multi-million dollar range, according to Primary Wave.

In addition to Brown, Kool & The Gang is comprised of Robert “Kool” Bell, Ronald Bell, Dennis “Dee Tee” Thomas, Robert “Spike” Mickens, Charles Smith, Woodrow “Woody” Sparrow and Ricky West. The Jersey City troupe first got its start on indie label De-Lite Records, which released the band’s debut album, Kool and the Gang, in 1969. The group broke through in 1973 with its fourth album, Wild and Peaceful, which contained hits like “Jungle Boogie” and “Hollywood Swinging.” Pulling from funk, soul, R&B, disco and jazz influences, Kool & The Gang’s work also played a defining role in the soundtracks for Rocky (1976) and Saturday Night Fever (1977).

For its impressive body of work, Kool & the Gang has received two Grammy awards, seven American Music Awards and was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame. The group also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, while Brown — along with bandmates Taylor and Robert and Ronald Bell — was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2018.

“I am very pleased to call Primary Wave my music partner and to join with dozens of other iconic artists and creatives in an incredible business family,” said Brown of the deal. “I look forward to collaborating with Larry Mestel and the entire Primary Wave team to further enhance my catalog and the Kool & The Gang brand.”

Kendall A. Minter, Brown’s legal counsel, added, “As counsel to George Brown and Astana Music, it was my pleasure to initiate, negotiate and close this deal with Primary Wave. The alignment of a globally iconic artist and creative talent with an iconic, global independent music publisher and brand enhancer is a win-win for the entire music community and fans.”

“Kool and the Gang’s influence on generations of musicians and fans around the globe cannot be denied,” said Primary Wave senior vp of business and legal affairs Samantha Rhulen. “A few of us from Primary Wave were excited to have been in the audience when they were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2018, and we are so thrilled to now be partnering with George Brown in 2023.”

SXSW Raises Rates for Performing Musicians

South by Southwest has increased the rates paid to domestic artists performing at the annual festival in Austin by 40-50%, following a petition and rally demanding higher pay.

The 2024 event artist application, which opened Tuesday, outlines that solo artists performing at SXSW will receive $150 — a $50 rate increase from previous years. Bands will now be paid $350 rather than the previous rate of $250. As in years prior, international artists will not receive financial compensation.

Also consistent with previous years, domestic artists playing SXSW must choose to take a monetary payment, or receive an artist credential that includes primary access to all music-related events, artist-only amenities including special rates on hotels, meals and drinks and artist networking space, and secondary access to film and television related programming.

SXSW charges an all acts an application fee, which is $35 until Aug. 25 and then $55 until applications close on Oct. 27.

“Our purpose at SXSW is to help creative people achieve their goals,” said SXSW’s vp of music festival James Minor in a statement. “As an industry event, showcasing at SXSW provides indispensable networking, mentoring, and career development opportunities that are not a part of standard consumer-focused festivals.

“Artists continue to make connections at SXSW that further their careers, and it is essential for us to provide opportunities that make the most impact in supporting the thousands of artists who come to Austin every March.”

In April 2021, Penske Media Corporation, which owns Billboardbecame an investor in SXSW by taking a 50% stake in the conference and festival.

The rate increase comes follows an artist-led petition from earlier this year that urged SXSW to increase compensation for musicians playing the festival. Published by the Union of Musicians and Allied Workers (UMAW), the petition was signed by more than 400 artists including Amber Coffman of Dirty Projectors, DIIV, Eve 6Mountain GoatsJeremy MessersmithSpeedy OrtizZola JesusPedro the LionYACHT and Emperor X, along with the Songwriters of North America (SoNA). On May 31, the organization led a rally outside Penske Media Corporation’s New York offices.

As reported by Texas Public Radio, during a Parks and Recreation Board meeting in Austin on Monday, Pat Buchta, the head of nonprofit Austin Texas Musicians, remarked on the rate increase, saying “Respectfully, is that enough? Our musicians do not think so, and musician input is the one thing that everybody seems to be missing in this conversation.”

Colleen Ballinger Defends Herself Against Child Grooming Accusations With a Ukulele Song

However, the 10-minute video was a bit unusual in comparison to other celebrity statements after a controversy, as she chose to express her thoughts with a 10-minute song performed on ukulele.

“A lot of people are saying some things about me that aren’t quite true. Doesn’t matter if it’s true, though, just as long as it’s entertaining to you, right?” the 36-year-old content creator sang in the clip posted to her Colleen Vlogs channel. “You guys having fun? All aboard the toxic gossip train, chugging down the tracks of misinformation. The toxic gossip train.”

Throughout the video, Ballinger did admit to having “weird” relationships with her fans earlier in her career but “for what it’s worth, I never had any bad intentions but I do feel like s—.”

Allegations surrounding Ballinger’s behavior with her fans first began in 2020, when YouTuber Adam McIntyre made a video claiming that the comedian had a personal friendship with him while he was just a teenager and she was in her 30s, adding that at one point, she sent him lingerie as a joke. At the time, Ballinger responded to some of his allegations in a video.

However, the allegations resurfaced just a few weeks ago when another YouTuber, KodeeRants, who defended Ballinger against McIntyre in 2020, alleged that Ballinger privately shared screenshots of messages with McIntyre in a fan group chat. She also showed screenshots in her now-deleted video, in which Ballinger asked the group of fans their “favorite position,” among other inappropriate questions.

Ballinger did not address KodeeRants’ claims in her response song, which you can watch below.

Quando Rondo Bonds Out of Jail After Arrest on Drug & Gang Charges in Georgia

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Rapper Quando Rondo has bonded out of jail after he was indicted on drug and gang charges in his hometown of Savannah.

Court records show a judge granted a $100,000 bond for the 24-year-old rapper, whose given name is Tyquian Terrel Bowman. He was released Monday, according to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.

A grand jury indicted him along with 18 others on June 14. The indictment charged Bowman with four counts, including being a manager of an illegal street gang known as “Rollin’ 60s.” Other charges allege Bowman conspired with others to distribute marijuana and to buy pills of the opioid hydrocodone.

His lawyer Jonah Pine said he is “extraordinarily grateful” that the rapper has been released on bond and declined to comment further.

The rapper’s singles “I Remember” and “ABG” led to a deal with Atlantic Records, which released his debut album, QPac, in 2020. His follow-up album, Recovery, came out in March.

Republic Records Has Longest Streak for a Label Atop Billboard 200 Albums Chart in 25 Years

For the last 16 weeks, one label has topped the Billboard 200 – Republic Records. That marks the longest streak for any label at No. 1 since 1998, when the Titanic soundtrack kept the Sony Classical label afloat at No. 1, also for 16 weeks.

Republic has led the chart since the March 18-dated tally, when Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time (released via Big Loud/Mercury/Republic) debuted at No. 1. That album spent 12 weeks in a row at No. 1, and then stepped aside on the June 10 and 17 charts when Taylor Swift’s Midnights (on Republic) returned to the top and Stray Kids’ 5-STAR (JYP/Imperial/Republic) debuted at No. 1, respectively. One Thing at a Time then returned to No. 1 for the last two weeks (June 24 and July 1 charts).

Sony Classical was the last label to rule the Billboard 200 for 16 straight weeks – and it did so with just one album: the Titanic soundtrack. From the Jan. 24 through May 9, 1998-dated charts, the Titanic album sailed at No. 1 (the entirety of its run in the top spot).

Republic could capture a 17th straight week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (on the July 8 chart, the top 10 of which is slated to be announced Sunday, July 2). The last label to hold the No. 1 spot for 17 weeks was Mercury, in 1992, when Billy Ray Cyrus’ Some Gave All logged 17 consecutive frames at No. 1 (June 13-Oct. 3, 1992, the entirety of its weeks at No. 1).

Mercury Records was founded in 1945 and continued to operate as a label until the late 1990s. It was reactivated in 2007 but went dormant again in the mid-2010s. Most recently, in 2022, it was relaunched as an imprint of Republic Records. As for Republic, the company debuted as a label in 1995, co-founded by brothers Avery and Monte Lipman. Today, they are Republic’s chief operating officer and chief executive officer, respectively.

If Republic can manage a 17th and then an 18th week in a row at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (on the July 15 chart), it would mark the longest reign for a label since Capitol claimed the top slot for 18 straight frames with M.C. Hammer’s Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em in 1990 (on the July 7-Nov. 3, 1990-dated lists). Please Hammer spent a total of 21 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1.

One Thing at a Time recently made news as the album with the most total weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (14) since Adele’s 21 (released via XL/Columbia Records) collected 24 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 in 2011-12. That 24 weeks in the lead for 21 were pieced together through 10 different stays atop the list, none of which were long enough to give XL or Columbia 16 weeks in a row atop the list.

Tom Holland & Zendaya Sing ‘Love on Top’ to Each Other at Beyonce’s Renaissance Tour

If Zendaya and Tom Holland weren’t already the cutest couple in Hollywood, they proved that title even further in an adorable fan-captured video from Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour stop in Warsaw, Poland, on Tuesday night (June 27).

In the clip, Bey is seen onstage performing her 2011 hit, “Love on Top,” as Zendaya and Holland are seen at the bottom of the screen, smiling and serenading each other with the chorus: “Baby, it’s you / You’re the one I love / You’re the one I need / You’re the only one I see.”

Holland and Zendaya have been dating for at least two years, and grew into a romantic relationship as they starred alongside each other in the Spider-Man films.

Earlier this month, The Crowded Room actor took part in a Buzzfeed series in which he answered 30 questions as quickly as possible, and brought up the Euphoria star several times. He admitted that she was his childhood celebrity crush — Zendaya starred in Disney Channel’s Shake It Up from 2010 to 2013 — and that she’s also the last person he sent a meme to. “It’s nonstop,” he said. “She sends me too much. I can’t keep up because I delete my Instagram for days at a time. I download it to post, then I have to check my messages and I’ll have hundreds and hundreds of things from her.”

YOASOBI Holds at No. 1 for 11th Week on Japan Hot 100

YOASOBI‘s “Idol” extends its stay atop the Billboard Japan Hot 100 to 11 weeks on the chart dated June 28, tallying the week from June 19 to 25.

The CD version of the Oshi no Ko opener went on sale during this chart week, selling 53,589 copies to come in at No. 2 for the metric. And while figures are slowing down in all but karaoke, the track continues to dominate streaming, downloads, video views and karaoke for the fifth straight week. Eleven weeks at No. 1 is tied with Gen Hoshino’s ubiquitous J-pop hit “Koi” that topped Billboard Japan’s year-end list for 2017.

King & Prince‘s “Nanimono” debuts at No. 2. The theme of the NTV drama Daga, Jonetsu wa aru starring member Kaito Takahashi launched at No. 1 for sales with 546,829 copies sold. While this figure is considerably less than the group’s previous single, “Life goes on,” that sold over a million CDs in its first week (1,051,909 copies), “Nanimono” did bow with over 500,000 copies while also coming in at No. 4 for video and No. 34 for radio.

Sakurazaka46‘s “Start over!” debuts at No. 10 on the Japan Hot 100 ahead of the CD single set to drop next week. The J-pop girl group released the accompanying music video and also made the digital version available for download and streaming during this chart week. The track hit No. 16 for downloads, No. 8 for streaming, and No. 67 for video, performing better than its predecessor “Sakurazuki” in all three metrics and is set to jump up the song chart next week.

The Billboard Japan Hot 100 combines physical and digital sales, audio streams, radio airplay, video views and karaoke data.
