“This world is beyond cruelty. We’ve been fighting the Harkonnens for decades, my family’s been fighting them for centuries, and they were massacred alongside my father,” Timothée Chalamet’s character Paul Atreides says in the trailer, before he joins Zendaya’s Chani and the sandy Arrakis planet’s natives to fight the Harkonnens, who destroyed Paul’s family in the first film.

The trailer also has a first look at Walken’s Emperor Shaddam IV, who orders a completely unrecognizable Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen to get rid of Paul. Walken’s character’s daughter, Princess Irulan, is played by Pugh.

According to the synopsis, the Dennis Villeneuve-directed film was shot on location in Budapest, Abu Dhabi, Jordan and Italy, and “will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.”

Dune: Part Two hits theaters on November 3. Watch the trailer below.

An Anti-Scalping Effort Was Gaining Momentum in the Senate – Until Live Nation Came Out to Support It

Ticketmaster owner Live Nation’s push for legislative ticketing reform earlier this year has actually slowed down progress on those issues, sources tell Billboard, stalling a long-in-the-works bill that addresses nearly identical concerns about the ticketing business.

Last year, even before Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour presale fiasco inspired a flurry of ticketing reform bills, the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) had been working on a wide-reaching piece of legislation in cooperation with Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and John Cornyn (R-Texas) to “combat predatory and deceptive ticketing practices,” according to sources close to the issue. The bill included bans on deceptive practices and speculative listings, enforcement of existing anti-bot laws and new tools for countering ticketing fraud. Its most substantive change took aim at the secondary ticketing industry, granting artists and tour promoters sweeping power to reduce ticket scalping by allowing artists to set legally binding rules on how and where their tickets are resold, according to a November 2022 memo reviewed by Billboard. Besides NIVA, Universal Music Group, Wasserman Music, Dice and See Tickets were all among the broad coalition of music companies supporting the effort under the coalition name Fix the Tix.

But, for months, the bill has languished — even as attention around ticketing has grown considerably following a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in January on competition within the ticketing industry. That’s because of increased lobbying by pro-scalper groups and a decision in February, by Ticketmaster owner Live Nation, to unveil the FAIR Ticketing Act, a five-point proposal with a list of legislative fixes — and the recommendations were very similar to the fixes NIVA had been quietly lobbying for.

With NIVA representing thousands of independent venues and Live Nation representing its huge corporate portfolio, the two entities often have opposing agendas, and some NIVA members theorized that Live Nation was attempting to sabotage their bill. Worried that supporting a similar proposal would look like politicians were rewarding Ticketmaster at a time when outrage at the company was growing, momentum around the NIVA bill waned. Klobuchar’s office, which had planned to announce a bi-partisan bill with Cornyn in the spring, delayed its announcement amid new concerns that the bill might strengthen Ticketmaster, sources close to both Live Nation and NIVA tell Billboard. They add that the FAIR Ticketing Act was neither a clone of the proposed NIVA bill nor a poison pill.

“Live Nation and Ticketmaster have been the target of the Senate since the two companies merged in 2010,” says one NIVA member speaking on the condition of anonymity. “There’s an appetite in D.C. to punish Ticketmaster, but the reality is that there’s no way to pass a law that would both punish Ticketmaster and bring about the types of reforms needed to clean up the ticketing business.”

Case in point: On April 28, Klobuchar’s office introduced legislation with Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) that would have banned ticketing companies like Ticketmaster from signing venue clients to long-term exclusive contracts. The proposal has faced opposition from some members of NIVA, who argued it would hurt small venues that relied on the payments from those contracts, and that fans would likely have to make up for the loss through higher ticket prices. A representative for Live Nation previously told Billboard the proposal wouldn’t “have a material impact on our business as we historically add clients in competitive marketplaces.”

As for similarities between the NIVA-backed bill and Live Nation’s proposal, “It’s not surprising that the two groups that spent the last six months thinking about legislative fixes [to] the same issue came up with similar solutions,” said one source close to Live Nation, noting that much of the friction between NIVA and Ticketmaster has subsided.

Ticketmaster officials appear to have gotten the message and have toned down the rhetoric around their political efforts. Many of the campaign efforts have been picked up by NIVA, which successfully lobbied for $15 billion in federal aid for venues negatively impacted by the coronavirus pandemic in 2021. Now, sources say, the Fix the Tix bill is expected to be proposed in the next couple of weeks.

Leading the charge at NIVA is the organization’s executive director, Stephen Parker. A longtime D.C. insider who worked with Sen. Tim Kaine when he was the governor of Virginia, Parker spent a decade at the bipartisan National Governors Association and has served on the board of the Country Music Association.

Parker confirmed to Billboard that neither Live Nation nor Ticketmaster has signed on as official supporters of the Fix the Tix coalition, while he and others are being extra cautious not to make their legislative package a referendum on Ticketmaster. Still, the Live Nation-owned company will play an outsized role in the Fix the Tix plan, as opponents are getting ready to paint the proposal as a major power shift to Ticketmaster and away from scalpers.

The Fix the Tix proposal would “make it illegal for resellers, professional ticket brokers, and ticket platforms to violate the artists’ and venues’ ticket terms and conditions, including restrictions that prohibit price gouging of fans through the resale of tickets above face value,” according to an early draft obtained by Billboard. That means artists, venues, or promoters could place ceilings on how much tickets are allowed to be marked up or restrict ticket resale until after all primary tickets have been sold. Since Ticketmaster and AEG are the only two companies on the market with technology that can track tickets after they’re sold to see if they are being resold and for how much, however, critics say this sort of law would create an even greater dependence on their services.

That’s far more power than Ticketmaster should have, says John Breyault, vp of public policy at the National Consumers League and a founding board member of the Fan Freedom Project, an advocacy group fighting restrictions on resale that receives funding from StubHub and Vivid Seats. “Ticketmaster does not want to eliminate resale; they want to control resale,” Breyault says. The current proposals by Ticketmaster and NIVA could bankrupt major secondary resale sites, especially if most tours decided to make their tickets non-transferable. Once Live Nation “got rid of its competitors,” Breyault says the company could convince the artist it works with to lighten up on ticket transferability and effectively “own the resale market.”

To a degree, Fix the Tix is a response to the dozens of pieces of pro-scalping legislation and lobbying that have been proposed at the state and federal levels over the past six months. This Fix the Tix bill would seek to overrule any state-level legislation that exists; there are currently over a dozen states with laws that outlaw restrictions on ticket transferability, meaning anyone can resell tickets at any price they want.Others, like Rep. Bill Pascrell’s (D-NJ) BOSS and SWIFT Act — which Breyault supports and the Fix the Tix coalition opposes — would permanently legalize scalping by making it illegal for ticketing companies to restrict ticket transferability.

Last year, the American Economic Liberties Project, which is funded by Pierre Omidyar — former chairman of eBay and owner of Ticketmaster rival StubHub — announced the “Break Up Ticketmaster,” campaign, aimed at pressuring the DOJ “to investigate and unwind the 2010 Live Nation-Ticketmaster merger,” according to the group’s website.

Opponents of scalping say the BOSS Act would make it impossible for artists to keep their tickets off secondary sites and would allow all scalping sites to sell any tickets they wanted without restriction. Proponents, however, believe that outcome is better for fans than allowing Live Nation and the artists it works with to make these decisions.

While the scalpers and the concert promoters are far apart on most issues, the rival bills do share consensus on a number of practices in ticketing that have long drawn the ire of fans. Those include speculative ticket listing, drip pricing and misleading marketing campaigns — all of which would be banned by both NIVA’s proposal and the BOSS and Swift Act.

Editor’s note: Billboard has updated this story to more accurately describe the work performed by the American Economic Liberties Project.

Bow Wow Blames

Hip-Hop is currently in a slump, and apparently, Bow Wow knows why that is the case.

Hip-Hop as a genre is not having a great 2023. If you didn’t know, there has not been one no.1 Hip-Hop album or single this year, and according to Mr. 106 & Park himself, Bow Wow, it all has to do with the steep decline in the quality of the music being put out.

Spotted on HipHopDX, the “Fresh Azimiz” crafter spoke with Power 106’s Bryhana Monegain on the 2023 BET Awards red carpet in Los Angeles, and she asked the rapper about Hip-Hop’s lack of presence on the Billboard 200  and Hot 100 charts and his answer has everyone saying “he is spitting.”

Per HipHopDX:

“Cause n-ggas puttin’ out trash ass music,” Bow Wow said. “Everything sound alike, everything repetitive, same tempo … everybody could do that, you know what I’m saying?”

He continued: “You really gotta have talent, you really gotta go. I think people are startin’ to get tired of it now, that’s why you don’t see nothin’ chartin.’” Watch the Ohio native discuss Hip Hop’s need to get back to the “real essence of artistry” below.

According to the website, six Hip-Hop acts had a no.1 song on the Billboard 200 this time last year, and two Hip-Hop tracks landed on the top spot of the Billboard 100.

Charlamagne Disagrees, He Feels HipHopDX Is A Good Space

But not everyone thinks Hip-Hop is in a bad state. Speaking on an episode of the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast, Charlamagne Tha God believes the genre is still thriving and believes some people critical of Hip-Hop are “stuck in an era.”

“I think Hip Hop is in a great place. I think people that don’t like Hip Hop now are just mad that it’s not what it used to be. They’re stuck in an era. I love all these new dudes My favorite dude is Kodak Black right now, “Charlamagne said while professing his love for rappers like

DJ Envy then said, “I love it not only for that; musically, the music is great. I love the fact that these brothers get money. They’re keeping themselves out of the hood. They’re paying for their families. Paying for their mama’s cribs and all that.”

For the most part, social media agrees with Bow Wow, with one user simply writing in a tweet, “Bow Wow has a point.”

Billboard’s Top 5 Songs of the Summer in 2013 | Billboard News

Billboard looks back and counts down the top five songs that ruled the summer of 2013.

Rania Aniftos:
Here we are — 2013! Ten years ago, when Miley Cyrus offended some people for twerking, but that didn’t stop her from twerking her way into the top five hits of the summer. More on that later, but let’s start off with the No. 5 song: Macklemore and Ryan Lewis featuring Ray Dalton start us off with “Can’t Hold Us.”

The No. 4 song belongs to the queen of 2013 twerking, Miley Cyrus. Her song “We Can’t Stop” had us feeling invincible in 2013.

Our No. 3 song won Record of the Year at the Grammys. Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” featuring Pharrell Williams had us getting our funk on.

Imagine Dragons had us head banging in the heat to their hit “Radioactive,” which comes in at No. 2 on our summer songs of 2013.

Pharrell Williams was killing it in 2013. Despite the legal issues around our No. 1 song, it was a huge hit. “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke featuring T.I. and Pharrell was our favorite song of the summer.

Come back next week for more summer fun as we dive into 2014.

“We’ve been following Ozuna’s career for years and we’re excited to be bringing him into the family to work with him and Edgar,” Jennifer McDaniels, president of management at SB Projects, said in a statement. “Ozuna’s music is unmatched.  His ability to work across genres including reggaeton, Latin pop, and more, is phenomenal. With unique songs offering fresh perspective and beautiful sounds,  we’re thrilled to amplify his artistry with this partnership.”

They are the perfect partners to help in our continued approach and take Ozuna to the next level of his career. We cannot be more thrilled and cannot wait for everyone to see what we have coming next.”

A key figure in Ozuna’s team, Andino has helped the singer-songwriter land global deals that range from NFT collaborations to releasing a song for the Call of Duty video game. Most recently, he led negotiations for Ozuna’s inclusion in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Official Soundtrack, performing “Arhbo” with rapper GIMS. The uplifting song, which they performed at the World Cup’s closing ceremony, peaked at No. 1 Billboard‘s Latin Airplay chart.

In May, he released Afro, a seven-track EP where he experiments with Afrobeats. It followed his 2022 studio album, Ozutochi, which landed at No. 5 on the Top Latin Albums chart. Ozuna is set to embark on his Afro Tour across Europe this summer, which has 16 confirmed dates, including stops in France, Spain, Italy, Israel and Holland. The monthlong trek kicks off July 7 in France and wraps Aug. 6 in Spain.

Olivia Rodrigo Unveils Alternate ‘GUTS’ Album Cover As a Target Exclusive

Olivia Rodrigo sure loves her purple album covers. Just three days after announcing her sophomore album Guts and giving fans a peek at its plum cover art, the 20-year-old pop star has now unveiled an alternative vinyl available only through Target — and yes, the secondary cover also features quite a bit of Rodrigo’s signature color.

The star shared the news with a simple Instagram Story post, sharing an album preorder link to Target’s website. The store’s special vinyl features Rodrigo — wearing a fuzzy black sweater and Converse sneakers — lying on a lilac floor with her feet kicked up against matching lilac walls. The vinyl disc also bears a purple shade, though it’s more of a neon magenta.

The photo pairs nicely with Guts‘ primary album cover, which shows Rodrigo in a lacy black dress and red lipstick lying on a purple backdrop, wearing four rings on her fingers that spell out the project’s title. “I made the bulk of this album during my 19th year on this earth,” the former Disney actress said in a Monday (June 26) statement at the time of the album announcement.

“A year that, for me, was filled with lots of confusion, mistakes, awkwardness & good old fashioned teen angst.”

As fans already know, though, the “Drivers License” singer’s love affair with purple goes much farther back than Guts. Beyond the fact that a quick scroll through her Instagram profile immediately proves that the hue is her go-to, the cover of her chart-topping debut record Sour also featured Rodrigo posing against a purple background, a collection of cheerful stickers covering her face and tongue.

Whether it’s the original or Target edition, fans have to wait until Sept. 8 for Guts to arrive. But new music from the Grammy winner is just around the corner, with Rodrigo planning to release the album’s lead single “Vampire” at midnight Friday (June 30). Plus, as announced Wednesday (June 28), she’ll also release a corresponding music video for the Dan Nigro-produced track on Friday, having teased the visual a couple times on social media.

Toad the Wet Sprocket Recalls Performing a Kiss Song With Jon Bon Jovi: ‘Behind the Setlist’ Podcast

Toad the Wet Sprocket had “the most audacious” idea when they were asked to participate in a collection of Kiss cover songs. “We knew we were not going to out-rock anybody,” recalls singer Glen Phillips on Billboard’s Behind the Setlist podcast. “And so the idea was to just make fun of ourselves and do it as if it were like a young life campfire song. Turn it into a waltz. Just make it, like, distressingly Toad-sounding.”

See latest videos, charts and news

Rising to prominence in the days of college radio in the early ‘90s, Toad the Wet Sprocket defied the musical trend of the day — the grunge movement that spawned Nirvana, Alice In Chains and Soundgarden — to score a pair of platinum albums, Fear and Dulcinea, filled with hooky songs featuring with melodic counterplay. The Santa Barbara, Calif.-based band had more in common with the acoustic-driven music they’ve covered live — Crowded House and Indigo Girls — than the heavy, raw rock music that dominated rock radio and rose high on the Billboard 200 album chart.

Lending its distinctive sound to a classic rock standard was a stroke of genius, though. Toad the Wet Sprocket’s version of “Rock and Roll All Nite” for the 1994 compilation Kiss My Ass: Classic Kiss Regrooved is arguably the most memorable recording on a collection that features such luminaries as Garth Brooks (“Hard Luck Woman”), Lenny Kravitz and Stevie Wonder (“Deuce”), Anthrax (“She”) and Gin Blossoms (“Christine Sixteen”).

“[Kiss bass player] Gene Simmons loved it,” Phillips boasts.

“He has gone on the record as saying it’s not only his favorite song on that album, but it’s one of his top 10 favorite recordings ever,” adds bassist Dean Dinning.

“Rock and Roll All Nite” has never been in heavy rotation on the band’s set lists — one performance at The Metro in Chicago in 1994 can be found on YouTube — but one performance stands out in the band members’ minds. “Jon Bon Jovi actually came on stage with us at a big radio show in New York at Madison Square Garden and sang that with us,” recalls Phillips.

Even for a band that had just put two songs — “Walk on the Ocean” and “All I Want” — into the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, sharing the stage with the “Living on a Prayer” singer was surreal. “It was so strange to be out there,” says Phillips. “On the one hand, I feel like, man, we’re playing Madison Square Garden. This is cool. We’re winning! We’re doing all right here! And he walked on stage and it was, like, goosebumps.” Phillips recreates the roar of the crowd like a burst of white noise or, as Dinning describes it, a jet engine. “It was like, Oh, that’s how it feels to be a real rockstar,” Phillips says.

As for the performance of the 1975 Kiss classic, Dinning thinks it was well received. “It’s not really fair to judge because Jon Bon Jovi was on stage with us, but it seemed like the crowd reaction was good,” he jokes.

After an eight-year break from recording, Toad the Wet Sprocket released a new studio album, Starting Now, in 2021, followed by a bonus version of the greatest hits collection All You Want. The 19-track compilation includes an unreleased version of the track “Best of Me” from Starting Now that originally featured the legendary Michael McDonald on backing vocals. The 2023 version of “Best of Me” is the original, McDonald-less version.

“This is the band version of the song that almost went on the record,” says Dinning. “It’s nice to bring the song back to the sound of just of just the band without the guest. It was it was a track that we hadn’t released yet and it’s a great song and the version is great. And so we made it the single off this new All You Want project.”

Listen to the entire interview with Phillips and Dinning at Behind the Setlist on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, iHeart, Amazon Music or Audible.
