Tracy Chapman Now First Black Woman to Hit No. 1 on Country Airplay as Sole Writer — Who Is the Only Black Male Writer to Have Achieved the Same?

When Luke Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” reached No 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated July 8), it marked several firsts.

The song, a remake of Chapman’s 1988 classic, became the first remake of a pop hit to reach No. 1 on the chart in 15 years, since Blake Shelton topped Country Airplay with his version of Michael Bublé’s “Home.” It was also the first time in 24 years that a cover of a song that originally reached the top 10 of the Hot 100 — Chapman’s tune peaked at No. 6 — summitted on the Country Airplay chart. The last to do so was Mark Chesnutt’s “I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing,” which led Country Airplay list in 1999, after Aerosmith’s original topped the Hot 100 in 1998.

But most significantly, it becomes the first song with a Black woman as the sole writer to top the chart. In fact, it marks only the second time since Country Airplay’s debut in 1990 that a Black songwriter has reached No. 1 credited as the only writer on a track. And like with “Fast Car,” the only time it has happened before was on a cover of a previous hit: For the chart dated Aug. 4, 1990, Dan Seals’ remake of Sam Cooke’s “Good Times,” penned solely by Cooke, reached No. 1.  Cooke, who released the song originally in 1964, took his version to No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.

As Rolling Stone first noted, three Black women have reached No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart as co-writers: Allison Randall was the first to do so, as co-writer on Trisha Yearwood’s “XXX’s & OOO’s (An American Girl),” which hit No. 1 on the chart dated Aug. 10, 1994.  In 2021, Lady A took “Champagne Night,” co-written by Ester Dean, to the summit — while later the same year, Dan + Shay reached No. 1 with “Glad You Exist,” which Tayla Parx co-wrote.

A number of Black and biracial male artists have taken songs they have co-written to No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart, including Darius Rucker, Kane Brown, BRELAND and Jimmie Allen. Additionally, a handful of Black male songwriters, including Shy Carter, Steven Battey, Anthony Smith and Jamie Moore, have co-written songs that have topped the chart.

For pure longevity on a country chart though, no one tops Ted Jarrett. In 1955, Webb Pierce’s take on the Black singer-songwriter’s “Love, Love, Love” spent 13 weeks at No. 1 on the Most Played by Jockeys chart, nine weeks atop the Most Played in Jukeboxes chart and eight weeks at No. 1 on Best Sellers in Stores for all “Country & Western Records.”

Rosie O’Donnell Gives Madonna Update, Says She’s ‘Strong in General’

The comedian took to Instagram on Sunday (July 2) to share a throwback photo of the duo starring in the 1992 sports comedy film, A League of Their Own. “remember when? #league #mo,” O’Donnell captioned the post, and took to the comments to answer some fans who were looking for an update on Madge’s health.

Guy Oseary revealed on Instagram earlier in the week that Madonna spent a few days in the ICU after she developed a “serious bacterial infection” on June 24. “Her health is improving, however she is still under medical care,” Oseary wrote. “A full recovery is expected.”

Despite her current recovery, the hospitalization has forced Madge to put her massive, career-spanning Celebration tour on pause for the time being. “At this time we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour,” Oseary wrote in his post. “We will share more details with you soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows.”

Hugh Grant Reveals He’s a ‘Rabid Blink’ After Attending BLACKPINK Concert

Hugh Grant is officially hooked on that pink venom. After seeing BLACKPINK perform, the 62-year-old Golden Globe winner took to Twitter to announce his new place among the BLINKs’ ranks.

“Very grateful to three eleven year olds for taking me to see @BLACKPINK yesterday,” the film star tweeted Monday (July 3). “Am rabid Blink now. Slept with my heart hammer.”

In the comments, the girl group’s fanbase was eager to welcome Grant with open arms. “welcome to the family ??,” replied @BLACKPINKGLOBAL, which is followed by more than a million BLINKs.

“Welcome to our family,” echoed @BLACKPINKMXCO, a community account for fans in Mexico.

The Notting Hill actor was in attendance at Rosé, Jisoo, Lisa and Jennie’s BST Hyde Park concert in London Sunday night (July 2), as evidenced by his tweet and in photos and videos taken of him at the show. One video shows Grant, who shares 11-year-old daughter Tabitha with ex-partner Tinglan Hong, wearing an official Born Pink hoodie.

BLACKPINK is currently touring the globe in support of its 2022 album, Born Pink, with upcoming shows in France and Vietnam. In August, the K-pop stars will plow through four cities in the U.S. — East Rutherford, N.J.; Las Vegas; San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Fans were pleased to see Jennie looking happy and healthy on stage at the Hyde Park show, just a few short weeks after she had to leave the stage in the midst of a BLACKPINK concert in Melbourne due to health issues. Afterward, the Idol star apologized to fans in a message. “I’m doing my best to recover [at the moment],” she wrote. “Your understanding and support means the world to me.”

Carrie Underwood Gets Matching Tattoos With 74-Year-Old Mom & Sisters: See the Pics

Everyone comes back from Las Vegas with a good story, even country music superstar Carrie Underwood. In photos shared to her Instagram on Monday (July 3), the Grammy-winning star showed off the matching tattoos she got with her mom and sisters in Sin City.

“When your 74-year-old mother asks you and your sisters to get matching tattoos with her in Vegas, the only questions are, ‘What?’ and ‘Where?’” the “Before He Cheats” singer quipped. “I never would’ve thought I’d see the day that Mama Carole would be gettin’ some ink!”

Underwood, her mother and her two sisters all got matching heart tattoos. While the rest of the Underwood ladies got tatted on their wrists, the star opted for a foot tattoo.

The “I Told You So” singer was in town for Reflection, her Vegas residency at the 5,000-person capacity Resorts World Theatre; she was the first artist to perform on theatre’s stage. The American Idol alum’s show runs for 90 minutes and features some of the most memorable songs from her 15-year career, including “Jesus Take the Wheel,” “Blown Away,” “Cowboy Casanova” and “Something in the Water.”

Up next, she’ll be opening for Guns N’ Roses on select August dates for the rockers’ World Tour. Then Underwood returns to her Vegas residency in September.

The eight-time Grammy-winner has earned 42 entries on the Billboard Hot 100, four of which have hit the top 10, including the No. 1 hit “Inside Your Heaven.” On the Billboard 200, she has earned four No. 1 albums from 10 top 10 entries: 2007’s Carnival Ride, 2009’s Play On, 2012’s Blown Away, and 2018’s Cry Pretty.

Black Twitter Exodus: What Is Spill?

HipHopWired Featured Video

Spill social media app photo

Source: @spillmob / Instagram

In the wake of another chaotic situation caused by Elon Musk, Black Twitter users are making a move to the new Spill social media platform in droves.

On Saturday (July 1st), Twitter users were greeted with an error message that either said “Rate limit exceeded” or “Cannot retrieve tweets.” Musk stated in a tweet that users who were unverified would only be able to read 600 posts a day, but Twitter Blue subscribers would be able to view 6,000 a day. For Black Twitter, that was the last straw in what many felt was the Tesla and Space X CEO’s continual disrespect, prompting many to sign up for Spill.

Spill is a social media platform with the purpose of creating a safe space for diverse communities with a distinct focus on Black women and LGBTQ+ communities. The app had recently launched its beta version on June 19th. It was created by Alphonzo “Phonz” Terrell and DeVaris Brown, former Black Twitter employees who were let go in the wake of Musk’s $44 billion purchase of the social media platform. “Our thesis was if we could build a platform from the ground up that caters to these groups, these culture drivers, and then solve the core problems that they’re facing, that our community is facing more specifically, that would make for a better experience for everyone,” Terrell said in a recent interview. The exodus of Black Twitter users, including numerous famous figures such as Keke Palmer and Desus Nice has propelled Spill to be number one in Apple’s App Store as of Monday (July 3).

Spill is styled as a microblogging app with a visual-first approach, with users being able to select from four colorways for their home page. Instead of Twitter’s 140 characters per tweet, each post or “spill” is set at 90 characters but users can get creative with images and GIFs, and even short videos in their posts. Spill is currently invite-only for new users, and is only available on iOS devices, which has spurred some complaints from those using Android devices. But many who’ve made their way to the app are praising it for its diversity and fun factor, as well as the dedication to keeping it a safe space for everyone. Hashtags such as #SpillMigration and #Spillionaires were in wide use on the app, with many more on Twitter making public requests for invite codes.

Watch Kelly Clarkson Find Out About Scandoval & Take a Dig at Her Ex-Husband

Scandoval was the affair heard around the world — except to Kelly Clarkson, who was shocked to find out that Vanderpump Rules star Tom Sandoval cheated on his longtime girlfriend Ariana Madix with her best friend, Raquel Leviss.

“Wait is that the [couple] that they’re not together?” the singer asks Las Culturistas co-hosts Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers while appearing on their podcast recently. When told what happened between Sandoval and Madix, Clarkson was in complete shock. “With one of the castmates? So it’s, like, on TV?” she exclaimed. “Oh my God, that girl went through that publicly?”

“So, wow, you really are off the grid when you’re off the grid,” Rogers joked to Clarkson, as the affair has been making endless headlines and has been inescapable for pop culture fans over the past few months.

“What kind of depth of a–hole?” Clarkson said of Sandoval, before taking a dig at her own ex-husband Brandon Blackstock when Rogers called Sandoval a narcissist. “I do have experience,” she said of dealing with narcissists. The pop star and daytime talkshow host filed for divorce from Blackstock in 2020.

Taylor Swift Reminds Fans to Pre-Save ‘Speak Now’ in New Video: ‘The Next Chapter Begins…’

Time is ticking down before Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) finally arrives this Friday (July 7), and Taylor Swift is here to remind you to pre-save the record.

In a Monday (July 3) exclusive video for Spotify, the 33-year-old pop star looked like she’d come straight out of 2010, wearing a whimsical green sundress and a long necklace, her hair in a fishtail side braid. “Hey! It’s Taylor Swift,” she said, seated in front of a purple backdrop and flickering purple candles.

“The next chapter begins on July 7, when Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) comes out,” she continued, smiling at the camera. “You can pre-save it now on Spotify.”

The video can be found on Swift’s “Upcoming releases” page on the music streaming app, which links fans to a timer counting down to release day, the record’s full tracklist and physical copies of the record available for purchase on the “Anti-Hero” singer’s website. Previously, Swift filmed a video for the Spotify page giving fans a peek at one of the magical purple vinyl discs and its accompanying poster.

Featuring re-recorded versions of all 14 of Speak Now‘s original tracks and six previously unreleased songs “From the Vault,” the fast-approaching project will mark the third of six planned “Taylor’s Version” albums. In 2021, Swift dropped both Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version), leaving her 2006 self-titled debut, 2014’s 1989 and 2017’s Reputation as the only albums left in the re-recording process.

Last week, Swifties got a taste of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) when “Back to December (Taylor’s Version)” was featured in a new The Summer I Turned Pretty season two trailer, which also included the Grammy winner’s Folklore fan-favorite “August.” The new season arrives on Prime Video exactly one week after Swift’s album, following a first season that included several other Swift tracks (“False God,” “Cruel Summer,” “This Love,” “The Way I Loved You” and more).

In June, Swift laid down some rules ahead of the album’s release at an Eras Tour show in Minneapolis. Just before performing “Dear John,” a scathing Speak Now ballad widely believed to be about her ex-boyfriend John Mayer, the Grammy winner asked fans not to spread hate online on her behalf.

“I’m 33 years old,” she told the crowd. “I don’t care about anything that happened to me when I was 19. I’m not putting this album out so that you can go and should feel the need to defend me on the internet against someone you think I might have written a song about 14 billion years ago.”

Michael Jordan Doesn’t Condone Son Marcus Jordan Dating Larsa Pippen

HipHopWired Featured Video

Celebrity Sightings In West Hollywood - March 18, 2023

Source: MEGA / Getty

Michael Jordan is not accepting of his son, Marcus Jordan, dating Larsa Pippen. The Internet certainly will reply, “Ya think?”

The slander was ripe as soon rumors began swirling that 32-year-old Marcus, who runs a successful sneaker brand and boutique in Miami (Trophy Room), was allegedly dating 48-year-old Larsa, the ex-wife of his dad’s longtime Chicago Bulls runnings mate Scottie Pippen. Then in January, Marcus and Larsa confirmed that they were indeed a whole couple—on Instragram per current celebrity protocol.

But while the Internet heaped on slander, and basically pointed to the relationship as cause for Scottie Pippen’s recent, and suspect critique of Michael Jordan’s game, Air Jordan had been mum on the topic. But recently, as TMZ reports, Jordan was spotted leaving dinner at Matignon in Paris and he as asked his son’s relationship with the woman who is 16 years his senior.

Recently, Mike responded to paparazzi asking about the May December relationship with a curt “No” when asked if he approved. And that was about it.

Hey, it’s now on the record. Thanksgiving might be real awkward this year.

Phony Stark, aka Elon Musk Broke Twitter, Black Twitter’s Migration To Spill Officially Underway

HipHopWired Featured Video

Twitter - Elon Musk

Source: Anadolu Agency / Getty / Elon Musk

Phony Stark, aka Elon Musk’s masterclass in breaking something that worked perfectly before he bought it, is pretty much complete. Over the weekend, Twitter was an absolute mess, and Black Twitter became officially fed up with the platform.

What the hell is a rate limit?

That’s what many Twitter users were asking over the weekend and some still as of today. Elon Musk took to his broken platform to reveal that all users were hit with limits on how many tweets they could read, causing a significant outage as people tried to keep up with what was happening in the world.

The Trump of Tech said in a tweet that verified account users can see up to 6,000 posts daily, while unverified users only see 600.

Newly registered Twitter users got it the worse, only being allowed to see 300 tweets per day. He eventually lifted that number to 10,000, 1,000, and 500, but the damage was done.

Musk claims that his platform is dealing with “extreme levels of data scraping” from “several hundred organizations” and “system manipulation” while not naming precisely who is doing it.

Is Elon Musk Lying?

Of course, people are calling C A P on Musk’s claims. Spotted on Crooks and Liars, web developer Sheldon Chang accused the Tesla and Space X chief’s Twitter “DDOSing itself, on rival Mastodon.

Per Crooks and Liars:

This is hilarious. It appears that Twitter is DDOSing itself.

The Twitter home feed’s been down for most of this morning. Even though nothing loads, the Twitter website never stops trying and trying.

In the first video, notice the error message that I’m being rate limited. Then notice the jiggling scrollbar on the right.

The second video shows why it’s jiggling. Twitter is firing off about 10 requests a second to itself to try and fetch content that never arrives because Elon’s latest genius innovation is to block people from being able to read Twitter without logging in.

This likely created some hellish conditions that the engineers never envisioned and so we get this comedy of errors resulting in the most epic of self-owns, the self-DDOS.

Unbelievable. It’s amateur hour.

Another developer was able to back up Chang’s claims by also replicating those DDOSing results.

Another claim accuses Musk and Twitter of simply not paying their bills after it moved from Google’s Cloud Services to their servers, and that’s when all of the issues began.

Black Twitter Is Packing Up & Leaving

Since Musk took over and imposed many dumb ideas, users have been looking for a substitute for Twitter. BlueSky caught on immediately but, per The Verge’s reporting, is pausing sign-ups “temporarily” as it deals with the influx of people signing up to use the platform.

In a BlueSky post, the company said:

“We will temporarily be pausing Bluesky sign-ups while our team continues to resolve the existing performance issues. We’ll keep you updated when invite codes will resume functionality. We’re excited to welcome more users to our beta soon!”

Black Twitter, which basically makes the platform pop, is done with Elon, and his shenanigans are on the move to Spill, which happens to be founded by two former Twitter employees, Alphonzo “Phonz” Terrell, and DeVaris Brown.

If you look up and down Twitter timelines, it’s Black users sharing their Spill profiles or asking for invite codes so they can join the mass exodus.

Welp.

Is this truly the end of Twitter? That remains to be seen, but it’s looking like it’s on its way into social media purgatory.

You can see more reactions to Elon Musk breaking Twitter in the gallery below.
