Beyonce Cancels Pittsburgh Renaissance Tour Date Due to Production, Scheduling Issues

Beyoncé‘s planned August 3 show at Pittsburgh’s Acrisure Stadium has been canceled. The venue announced the news on Wednesday (July 5) in a tweet, which said that due to unspecified “production logistics and scheduling issues” the Renaissance World Tour date has been scratched from the schedule.

Refunds will be automatically issued at the point of purchase.

At press time Bey had not commented on the Pittsburgh pull and a spokesperson had not responded to Billboard‘s request for additional information on the cause of the cancellation; the show is no longer listed on the roster of dates on the singer’s official site, which now has her playing Boston on August 1 and then moving on to Washington, DC on August 5-6.

The Renaissance tour kicked off on May 10 in Stockholm, Sweden and found the singer performing in stadiums and arenas across Europe through the final show on June 27 at the PGE Narowdoy in Warsaw, Poland; according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore, Bey grossed $154.4 million and sold 1 million tickets across 21 European shows.

The North American tour is scheduled to kick off on July 8 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto and keep Beyoncé on the road through a Sept. 27 gig at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The North American Renaissance dates will find Bey criss-crossing the U.S. and Canada at the same time as another powerhouse performer, Taylor Swift, fills stadiums on her Eras Tour, with Queen Bey playing a number of the same venues as her fellow Forbes’ America’s Richest Self-Made Women list honoree.

Janelle Monáe & Their Right Boob Made A Splash At 2023 Essence Fest

2023 Essence Festival Of Culture

Janelle Monáe is back on stages across the nation as they continue to promote their latest studio album, The Age Of Pleasure, which came after a steamy video for the project’s lead single. Janelle Monáe is once again the topic of discussion after they flashed their right boob during the 2023 Essence Fest, which sparked some comments from other entertainers and observers.

Janelle Monáe, 37, rocked the Essence Fest stages over the weekend back by a troupe of dancers in what looked to be a spirited performance. For years, Monáe kept their physical frame largely from the public view but has shown flashes of themselves in revealing attire as well. According to some, Monáe’s embrace of nudity and expression seems like it came out of left field but fans of the entertainer know otherwise.

During Essence Fest, Monáe took a moment to lift up their bikini top and showed off their right breast with the nipple portion covered with a sparkling tassel. This adds to Monáe’s recent run of baring their breasts during concerts and leaning deeply into the concept of the new album. While most people are appreciative of Monáe’s expression, their recent actions have prompted some harsh criticism from some of their peers.

Singer India Aire took to social media to seemingly throw a subtle shot towards Monáe and Megan Thee Stallion and there are reports that Uncle Luke of 2 Live Crew fame also had something to say. As it stands, acts like Janelle Monáe, Megan Thee Stallion, and others who promote sexuality on their terms are ruffling feathers.

We’ve got related reactions to Janelle Monáe and the boob flash below. Because of the nature of the video, we won’t post it in the body of this text but it can be found here.

Watch BTS’ 10th Anniversary Fireworks Show

Though FESTA has come and gone, BTS fans have another chance at experiencing the group’s 10th anniversary fireworks show online. The Bangtan Boys uploaded the special celebration, which took place live from Seoul on June 17, to its YouTube page on Wednesday (July 6) for fans to enjoy.

The stunning pyrotechnics display occurred at the Han River Park after night fell, and kicked off with Map of the Soul: Persona track “Mikrokosmos” — a fitting selection, as the song’s message speaks of unity and a beacon of hope to those watching. “One light is ambition/ Some light is rebellion/ People’s lights/ All are precious/ This dark night (Don’t be lonely)/ Like stars (We shine)/ Don’t disappear/ ‘Cause you’re a big existence/ Let us shine,” RM and Suga rap on the song’s second verse.

Throughout the light show, special effects were employed to fit the theme of the song playing. For “Boy With Luv” featuring Halsey, the sky lit up with smiley faces and red hearts, and during the group’s No. 1 smash “Butter,” several yellow sequences were sent up above the river. The visual display concluded with BTS’ recently released track, “Take Two,” which featured several fireworks in the group’s signature color — purple.

According to Reuters, an estimated 400,000 people — some who traveled across the world — turned up for the event in Seoul. RM was in attendance at the FESTA celebrations, and gave a message to all the fans in attendance, as well as those tuning in. “Time goes by so fast. Everything has changed, and I’ve changed a lot,” he shared. “I’m not sure what I’m going to be doing with what feelings on the 15th and 20th anniversaries, but my love for you won’t change.”

Toby Keith Returns to the Stage for His First Performances After Revealing Cancer Diagnosis

Toby Keith returned to the stage over the weekend, performing two full-fledged concerts at Hollywood Corners in Norman, Okla. — with each clocking in at more than two hours in length.

The shows mark Keith’s first performances since announcing his stomach cancer diagnosis in June 2022, when he revealed that he had spent the past six months undergoing chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

Some videos of his weekend shows have popped up online, including snippets of the country star performing his hits “Made in America,” “I Love This Bar” and “Dream Walking.” Keith performed with his Easy Money Band, as well as with longtime friend and collaborator Scotty Emerick.

The concerts came just before the July 4th holiday, appropriate timing given Keith’s longtime support of the United States military. He’s known for songs including “American Soldier” and “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American),” a song he wrote and recorded following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks carried out against the United States.

In 2022, Keith took a break from recording and performing in order to focus on battling cancer. In a June 2023 interview with The Oklahoman newspaper ahead of his annual Toby Keith & Friends Golf Classic, he offered an update on his health and noted that he hoped to return to performing soon.

“I’m feeling pretty good,” Keith said. “Basically, everything is in a real positive trend … you never know with cancer, so you have to prepare.”

He added, “I’ve got more wind. And I’m thinking about bringing the band in and setting up, playing two or three days somewhere just to see if I can get through two hours.” He noted that if that went well, he hoped to be on the road in the fall.

Freedom Ice Cream Ben & Jerry’s Faces Boycott From Conservatives Over “Controversial” July 4th Tweet

After making all kinds of moves in support of racial equality and social-political progress, Ben & Jerry’s is now facing calls for boycott after once again rubbing far-right Republicans, white supremacists and Trumpian MAGAs the wrong way with some cold hard facts.

According to Newsweek, early yesterday (July 4), Ben & Jerry’s official Twitter account sent out a “controversial” tweet in which they factually stated that America exists as a result of the genocide of its Indigenous Native Americans and that we “commit to returning it” to its rightful heirs. Naturally, the descendants of the colonizers who came to this land from a half-a-world away took issue with the statement and were quick to spew their hateful rhetoric online and demand that everyone stop buying the many delicious flavors of ice cream that Ben & Jerry’s has been blessing us with for the past 45 years.

Newsweek reports:

Ben & Jerry’s message generated a flood of negative responses on social media, with some calling it the company’s “Bud Light moment,” referring to controversy and subsequent boycott after the beer brand partnered with a transgender activist in April.

Other Twitter users called on the company to be the first to give up its profits and properties, including factories, buildings and stores. Others said that the company should be returning its factory land to the Abenaki people.

“Ok you start. Relinquish your headquarters,” one Twitter user wrote. “This should be easy then,” wrote another. “Shut down and donate all of your land, facilities, and assets to indigenous people.”

You first, MAGA.

Unfortunately, we’ve reached a point in time when if companies include or even speak up for people of color, LGBTQ, or any other minority group, they are bombarded with backlash and threats for daring to be so “liberal.” To make matters worse, the reactions seem to work as the far-right have resorted to real-world violence and intimidation to get their way.

After Target unveiled its LGBTQ apparel for this year’s Pride Month, stores all around the country were harassed with bomb threats while openly gay workers began to experience more hostility and aggression from anti-gay customers. Target decided to pull its LGBTQ merchandise to keep its stores and workers safe.

While we don’t know if violent Trumpians will begin to harass supermarket workers for carrying Ben & Jerry’s ice cream in the frozen section, we wouldn’t be surprised if many voicemails at the company office contain death threats and “pro-America” messages as that’s just how the right gets down these days.

What do y’all think of the backlash that Ben & Jerry’s is facing for their message? Let us know in the comments section below.

Ariana Grande Celebrates Her Birthday on Set of ‘Wicked’: ‘Ozian 30th’

Ariana Grande was definitely the most “Popular” birthday girl on the set of Wicked last week.

In a Wednesday (July 5) Instagram post, the newly 30-year-old pop star revealed that she celebrated her 30th birthday hard at work with her castmates and crew, sharing snaps of all the sweet ways her Wicked live-action colleagues made her feel extra special on June 26. In one video, she goes out to eat with co-star Bowen Yang; in another photo, the R.E.M. Beauty founder poses for a mirror selfie with her makeup team.

“Ozian thirtieth :)” she captioned the post.

More photos reveal that the cast and crew made a compilation of personal video messages for the “Positions” singer, including Jeff Goldblum, who plays the Wizard of Oz in the film. “I LOVE U,” Grande wrote of the actor on her Story.

“My Ozian family made me the sweetest video in the world,” she added of the gesture. “This entire crew. It’s too much. I’m never leaving.”

Grande will play Glinda the Good Witch opposite Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba — aka the Wicked Witch of the West — in the two upcoming Wicked films, the first of which is set to arrive November 2024. The Jon M. Chu-directed project also stars Michelle Yeoh and Bridgerton‘s Jonathan Bailey.

On the actual day of her birthday, Grande shared a sweet throwback photo of herself as a child, dressed up as Dorothy Gale in a blue and white checkered dress. “HBD, tiny!” she wrote to her past self in the caption. “I trust you implicitly & have never been prouder of you.”

Striking the Perfect Chord: Bridging Marketing and Wellness in the Music Industry (Guest Column)

When introducing myself as the vp of marketing and wellness at Guin Records, a title that doesn’t conform to the usual melody of the music industry, I’m often met with raised eyebrows and intrigued inquiries. This blending of roles — pairing the vibrant, creative world of marketing with the crucial, human aspect of wellness — might seem unconventional to most in our industry. Yet, this combination isn’t just possible. It’s essential and, I would argue, long overdue.

The responsibilities of my role involve walking the line between two worlds. I champion and promote the music our artists create, steering the narrative to connect deeply with new audiences and core fans. Simultaneously, I cultivate an environment that nurtures the mental and emotional well-being of our artists and staff.

At Guin Records, we embed wellness into the very fabric of our ethos and values. We recognize that the creative process, while exhilarating, can also be emotionally taxing. We acknowledge the highs and lows, the euphoria and the vulnerability that come with artistic expression. Therefore, we prioritize the well-being of our artists, empowering them to create and share their music in a sustainable and healthy way.

Why is this important? Because music is profoundly human. The music that touches our souls, the lyrics that resonate with our experiences and the performances that captivate our senses — all are born from the hearts and minds of individuals. Artists, like all of us, require support, care and an environment conducive to their growth and well-being.

How do we accomplish this? By acknowledging that an artist’s well-being is not a peripheral concern but a core element that directly impacts their art as well as our bottom line. As a concrete step, we offer non-recoupable wellness stipends to our artists. This financial support allows them the freedom to invest in their mental and physical health without burden.

Moreover, we maintain a strong alliance with non-profit entities like Backline, ensuring our artists and team members have readily available mental health resources. We’ve proudly signed the “Breaking The Barriers” pledge, committed to helping knock down long-standing roadblocks that often keep BIPOC communities from getting the mental health care they need. To further our investment in our team’s well-being, we’ve instituted a “Mental Health Day Policy.” This grants our employees the liberty to take much-needed breaks for personal rejuvenation; fostering a culture of prevention against burnout. After all, in nurturing our people, we nurture the music.

So I call on my industry peers to turn the volume up on this crucial conversation. Let’s recognize that a healthy artist creates better music, and a team that feels supported performs better. Let’s shift our industry narrative to one that doesn’t just produce beautiful music but also upholds the well-being of the beautiful minds behind it.

By prioritizing wellness, we’re setting the stage for a more sustainable, empathetic and human-centered music industry. By championing the music we love while investing in the well-being of those who create it, we pave the way for a sustainable industry that supports everyone involved. It’s not just about the end product but about the process, the people and the passion that fuel it all.

Brandon Holman is vp of marketing & wellness at Guin Records, whose artist roster includes Asha Imuno. Holman is also co-founder of The Lazuli Collective, an experiential wellness agency that delivers wellness and mental health programming to audiences around the world through events, music and consultancies including the Coachella Arts and Music Festival.

20 Country Music Documentaries That Tell a Great Story

On July 5, the Country Music Association releases its first feature-length film, CMA Fest: 50 Years of Fan Fair. The documentary, available on Hulu, offers the stories behind the festival’s five-decades of connecting fans and artists, and along the way building the signature country music festival’s ever-strengthening global impact. These stories are told through the eyes of multiple generations of artists, as well as key music industry members, including the CMA CEO Sarah Trahern.

CMA Fest: 50 Years of Fan Fair looks into the festival’s beginnings as Fan Fair in 1972, when it drew 5,000 fans to Nashville’s Municipal Auditorium, and chronicles the festival’s evolution into a festival that now draws more than 80,000 fans a day across four days, with attendees from not only every U.S. state, but also nearly 40 countries. The 75-minute doc features interviews with an array of artists, including Bill Anderson (who has attended nearly every Fan Fair/CMA Fest since in 1972), Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert, Frankie Staton, Lainey Wilson, Carrie Underwood, Vince Gill, Wynonna Judd, Sawyer Brown’s Mark Miller, Dolly Parton and Jeannie Seely.

As the past several years have become what some would consider a “golden age” for music documentaries in general — with a plethora of documentaries on Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga, P!nk, Britney Spears, Shania Twain, Joan Jett, music mogul Clive Davis, producer David Foster and multi-hyphenate Quincy Jones, just to name a handful — we look at a non-comprehensive list of 20 additional country music-centered documentaries.

These documentaries span from multi-part, history-encompassing docs, as well as documentaries that tell the stories of the industry that helps bring the music to the masses, and documentaries that center on the stories of individual artists ranging from Luke Bryan and Jelly Roll to Guy Clark, DeFord Bailey and Linda Ronstadt. Check out our list below.
