Spotify Revenues Rise 11% on Larger Than Expected Subscriber Growth in Q2

Spotify reported its revenues rose 11% for the second quarter as surging monthly active users and growth in premium subscribers tamped down costs from staff cuts in the previous three months.

The company’s total revenue €3.2 billion ($3.53 billion) was up 11% from the year ago quarter, or up 14% in constant currency, a measure that strips out the effects of foreign exchange fluctuations. Monthly active users, or the total number of unique visitors to Spotify every month, rose 27% to 551 million in the quarter, while the number of premium subscribers grew 17% to 220 million, up a net of 10 million in the quarter.

The growth in premium subscribers modestly beat company guidance by 3 million and was enough to offset quarterly operating losses of €247 million ($272.7 million), as the company incurred numerous one-time costs related to staffing and cuts to its podcast programs meant to reduce long-term expenses.

Spotify’s executives will discuss the quarter’s earnings — and the impact of the recently announced premium subscription price increases — in greater detail on a call with investors at 8 a.m. EST.

The company reported gross margin of 24.1%, below its guidance of 25.5%. When adjusted to strip out one-time expenses related to cost cuts in the quarter, Spotify said its margin was in-line with guidance at 25.5%.

  • Spotify’s monthly active users were up 27% to 551 million, well above the company’s 530 million target.
  • Premium subscribers rose 17% to 220 million, beating company expectations of 217 million premium subscribers for the quarter.
  • Total revenue rose 11% to €3.2 billion ($3.53 billion) and met the company’s internal targets.
  • Adjusted Operating Loss of €112 million was better than guidance, excluding charges related to actions in the quarter to streamline operations and reduce costs.

Blur Blazes to U.K. Chart Lead With ‘The Ballad of Darren’

Blur will be hard to catch in the U.K. chart race.

The legendary Britpop band sets a dizzying pace on the midweek chart with The Ballad of Darren (via Parlophone), which is currently outselling the rest of the top 10 combined, the Official Charts Company reports.

Dropping last Friday, July 21, The Ballad of Darren is likely to mark the group’s seventh U.K. No. 1, which includes their most recent effort, 2015’s The Magic Whip.

The foursome, comprising Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree, also hit No. 1 with Parklife (1994), The Great Escape (1995), Blur (1997), 13 (1999), and Think Tank (2003) (2015).

Of their eight previous studio LPs, only their first two efforts, 1991 debut Leisure (No. 7 peak) and 1993’s sophomore release Modern Life is Rubbish (No. 15), have failed to summit.

Frontman Albarn has already lifted the crown this year, with Gorillaz, whose Cracker Island started atop the Official U.K. Albums Chart in March, for the “virtual” act’s second leader.

Meanwhile, Michigan rockers Greta Van Fleet are soaring high on the latest chart blast with Starcatcher (EMI), their third album. It’s new at No. 2, and is set to earn Greta Van Fleet a new career high, eclipsing 2018’s Anthem of a Peaceful Army (No. 12 peak) and 2021’s The Battle at Garden’s Gate (No. 8).

Completing an all-new top three at the midweek point is by Nottingham, England alt-rock act As December Falls Join The Club (ADF). It’s new at No. 3 on the Official Chart Update, and should give the indie outfit their debut chart appearance.

Further down the midweek tally, K-pop girl group NewJeans could slip into the top 10 with their second EP, Get Up (Polydor). Featuring the viral single “Super Shy,” Get Up is on track for a No. 7 start.

All will be revealed when the Official U.K. Albums Chart is published late Friday, July 28.

Michelle Buteau Talks ‘Survival of the Thickest,’ Sharing a Birthday With J.Lo & More | Billboard News

Comedian Michelle Buteau tells us about her new Netflix film ‘Survival of the Thickest,’ why she was inspired to make the show, sharing a birthday with Jennifer Lopez, and more!

Michelle Buteau:
Hey everyone, I’m Michelle Buteau. And you’re watching Billboard News. But you knew that already because you clicked.

Michelle Buteau:
My new show on Netflix ‘Survival of the Thickest’ is a show that has been inspired by my book ‘Survival of the Thickest: Plus-Size Essays in a Small-Minded World.’ And so the themes are so important to me. We explore body positivity, sex positivity, inclusion, black, brown, queerness, what it’s like to live in the city, New York City, the best city in the world. And follow your dreams and hustle and what it looks like to be in a toxic relationship and in your mid 30s. And you got to make a choice, girl, what’s it gonna be?

Michelle Buteau:
What is this show gonna be? You know what I mean? Like, I have stories, I have the book, but I have this platform in 190 countries with Netflix, you know, I could be funny all the time, obviously. And I’m a woman — how she do it? I’m like, I am going to use this platform for good. You know, I’m going to say something important. I’m gonna be authentic to my New York. And that is everybody, literally everybody, every shape, size and shade. And so I’m so proud of not only diversity in the cast, but also the crew. Listen, my cast was amazing. We had Peppermint, Michelle Visage, Garcelle Beauvais, Tone Bell, Nicole Byer. And let me tell you something, she nailed it. Nailed it.

It also broke the first-weekend record for a film directed by a woman. And what’s a movie without its soundtrack? Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice lay down the lyrics for “Barbie World.” Dua Lipa had Margot Robbie on her feet with “Dance the Night,” while Billie Eilish had us in our feels.

Herb Alpert Congratulates ‘Gracious’ Taylor Swift on Tying His Billboard 200 Accomplishment

Taylor Swift currently has four albums on the Billboard 200 chart’s top 10, marking the first time in nearly 60 years that a living artist has at least four albums in the top 10 at the same time.

The last time this happened was on the April 2, 1966-dated chart, when Herb Alpert had four albums in the Billboard 200 top 10 (Going Places at No. 2, Whipped Cream & Other Delights at No. 3, South of the Border at No. 9 and The Lonely Bull at No. 10).

To congratulate Swift on joining him in the impressive achievement, the 88-year-old musician took to TikTok to share a sweet message. “Hi Taylor, this is Herb Alpert,” he says in the clip. “I’ve been getting calls from all over the world from publications wanting to know how do I feel about you breaking my record of — I don’t know — 150 years ago. I feel great! I think you’re a wonderful artist, sincere, you’re gracious and you deserve it. You deserve it all. Congratulations.”

Swift notched her 12th No. 1 album on the July 22-dated chart with Speak Now (Taylor’s Version). Her other top 10 projects this week include Midnights (falling 4-5), Lover (8-7) and Folklore (13-10).

Here’s How BTS’ Jimin Reacted to Ryan Gosling Wearing His ‘Permission to Dance’ Outfit in ‘Barbie’

Everything is good between Ryan Gosling and Jimin. Ahead of the release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie this past weekend, Gosling reached out to the BTS member and apologized for wearing his “Permission to Dance” outfit during a scene in the movie and offered a special token in exchange.

Jimin, thankfully, doesn’t seem to mind.

“Hi Ryan and hi Ken, it’s Jimin,” Jimin said in a video posted to his Instagram on Monday, holding Ken’s guitar from the movie. “Congrats on your big release. My fans are excited to see your video so thank you so much. I could see that you look great in my outfit.

“Thank you for this guitar. I really love it and I look forward to watching Barbie,” the BTS vocalist continued. “Go Barbie!”

Gosling offered the “Like Crazy” singer his guitar in a video posted to the Barbie film’s official Twitter page on July 19. “Hi Jimin, it’s Ryan Gosling here. I notice that your ‘Permission to Dance’ outfit is the same as my Ken outfit in the upcoming movie Barbie. I have to give it to you — you wore it first. You definitely wore it best and there’s an unspoken Ken code that if you bite another Ken’s style, you have to give them your most prized possession,” the Ken actor said. “I hope you’ll accept Ken’s guitar as my humble offering. Besides, Ken doesn’t really play anyway, so…it’ll be much better in your hands.”

The interaction is likely a special one for the BTS member, who has remarked on previous occasions that he has watched Gosling’s 2004 movie The Notebook more than seven times.

See Jimin’s video, as well as Gosling’s, below.

8 Best Moments From Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in Seattle: HAIM’s First Shows, New Surprise Songs & More

It was quite the summer bash this past weekend in Seattle. Steps from the iconic Space Needle, foodies from all over the Pacific Northwest gathered for the city’s three-day “premier food festival.” Less than a couple miles west, Sofi Tukker, Denzel Curry, Louis the Child, PinkPantheress and dozens more musical acts performed all weekend at the annual Capitol Hill Block Party. Heading south toward the SoDo neighborhood, the Seattle Mariners completed a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays at their home base of T-Mobile Park.

And, of course, just across the street, Taylor Swift finally brought her Eras Tour to Lumen Field — the climax to the officially declared Taylor Swift Week in King County.

Despite tens of thousands of people moving in and out of Washington state for a variety of different reasons, the Swiftie Energy was strong and felt everywhere. I-5 and I-90 were bumper to bumper as several cars and trucks with license plates from Idaho, Oregon and British Columbia were covered in lyrics and puns. “Shaking it off to the Eras Tour,” read one SUV headed from eastern Washington.

Sidewalks and iconic landmarks like Pike Place Market and Gas Works Park were extra Swiftie-coded too. No matter where you looked, chances were high you’d spot pedestrians in merch, cowboy boots, 13s or sequins — all telltale signs of an Eras Tour ticket-holder. Even the Space Needle was dressed to impress — hanging from the skyscraper’s entrance were giant friendship bracelets of its own that read “In My Seattle Era” and “#SwiftNeedle.”

For two sold-out nights, Taylor — alongside openers Gracie Abrams and HAIM — undoubtedly matched the crowd’s energy and then some. Billboard was on site at both sold-out shows, and we’ve rounded up the best moments from her big return to the PNW below.

Recording Academy Accepting Submissions for 2024 Best Song for Social Change Grammy Award

The Recording Academy is accepting submissions from voting members for its second annual best song for social change award. This award recognizes creators of message-driven music that responds to the social issues of our time and has the potential for positive global impact.

This is a special merit award – not a regular, competitive Grammy Award. Entries are reviewed and the recipient is selected by a “blue-ribbon committee.”

The inaugural award was presented at the 65th annual Grammy Awards on Feb. 5 by first lady Jill Biden before she also presented song of the year to Bonnie Raitt’s “Just Like That.” The inaugural recipient was “Baraye” by Iranian singer/songwriter Shervin Hajipour.

Songs that were commercially released during the last three Grammy eligibility years – that’s Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 15, 2023 – are eligible for this award. The submission period began one week ago (July 17) and continues through Aug. 31.

This award, which honors singles or tracks in any musical genre, is presented to the songwriter(s). The song must include music and lyrics in any language, provided that an approved English version of the lyric is submitted.

“We’re excited to offer this award, proposed by our voting members, to recognize creators of message-driven music that responds to the social issues of our time and has the potential for positive global impact,” the Academy said in an email to its members.

The Academy also gave some prompts of specific issues that fit the award: peace, security (personal safety), human dignity, climate crisis, mental health, civil rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, anti-bullying, communities in need, voting rights, homelessness, inequality, hunger access (food security), rights of the disabled, education access, indigenous peoples/land use/resources.

Here is the Academy’s stated eligibility and selection criteria (lightly edited for space and clarity):

  • “The award recognizes a song that has had profound social influence and impact.
  • “Submissions should contain lyrical content that: a) addresses a timely social issue; b) explores a subject impacting a community of people in need; and c) promotes awareness, raises consciousness, and builds empathy.
  • “The song may reference previous work and may include previously recorded or published lyrical material; in addition, a significant degree of new creative and lyrical content is required. The songwriters of the new material are eligible to receive the award; determination of songwriter eligibility for previously recorded or published lyrical work will be at the discretion of the Academy.
  • “Recordings featuring samples or interpolations are eligible; however, in alignment with Grammy Awards rules, songwriters of sampled or interpolated material are not eligible to receive the award.
  • “Songs previously acknowledged as finalists for this award will notbe eligible for consideration.
  • “Previously Grammy-nominated and/or Grammy-winning songs are eligible for this honor as long as they meet the commercial release eligibility criteria for this award.
  • “Selection criteria include the lyrical content of the song, the artistic quality of the composition, and the perceived impact of the song in delivering an empowering message that brings awareness about social issues that affect the world.
  • “The selection criteria will be guided by the principle that social good is ‘an action that will result in a benefit being available to the general public,’ which may include songs that affirm the basic humanity of all people.
  • “In this context, the new award will recognize a song that promotes: Understanding – educates and /or raises awareness of other people’s experiences, advocacy, and tolerance; Peacebuilding – measures intended to create or sustain peace or freedom from dissention; Empathy – the ability to understand and share the feelings of another; Being positive – a good, affirmative, or constructive quality or attribute. In contrast, songs containing hate speech or advocating violence or terrorism would be deemed ineligible.”
