Snoop Dogg Cancels Hollywood Bowl Shows As SAG-AFTRA Strike Rages On

Let it never be said that actor and West Coast Hip-Hop legend Snoop Dogg doesn’t stand with the people against the greedy corporate executives who take advantage of them to further line their already bloated pockets.

According to Digital Music News, the Doggystyle rapper has canceled his plans to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his debut album with two concerts at the Hollywood Bowl. Why have the two concerts been postponed indefinitely? Because Snoop is a good man and he is standing in solidarity with the unionized actors and writers participating in the SAG-AFTRA strike.

“We regret to inform you that due to the ongoing strike and the uncertainty of when this will be over, we need to cancel the Hollywood Bowl show,” Snoop announced via Instagram. “We continue to stand in solidarity with all of our brothers and sisters in the WGA and SAG/AFTRA during this difficult time and remain hopeful that AMPTP will come back to the negotiating table with a REAL proposal so we can all get back to work.”

Meanwhile, fans who have already paid their coins for the pair of concerts, which had already been previously postponed in solidarity with the writers’ strike, will have to wait to find out when their money will be refunded. It’s unclear whether other shows at the Hollywood Bowl will end up on the chopping block because a bunch of wealthy Hollywood execs would rather use AI tech to replace actors than pay them what they’re worth.

From DHM:

The Hollywood Bowl concerts will see Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre team up with conductor Derrick Hodge and the ReCollective Orchestra to perform new renditions of Doggystyle tracks. Snoop and Dr. Dre also have plans to release a new album called Missionary later this year—it’s unclear whether those release plans are impacted or not. No information about ticket refunds has been provided.

So, basically, Hollywood greed is continuing to rob the world of art and trained artistry across genres—screenwriting, acting, and now music as well. It’s really a shame, but it’s heartwarming to see how Snoop Dogg and other celebrities are on the right side of history.

Respect.

Drug Dealer Gets 30 Months For Death Of Michael K. Williams

A drug dealer was sentenced to 30 months in prison in connection with the overdose death of actor Michael K. Williams.

On Tuesday (July 25), Carlos Macci entered the Federal District Court in Manhattan, New York. Addressing the court and U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams, Macci said “I would like to say, your honor, I’m sorry for what has happened.” Judge Abrams then sentenced the 72-year-old to two and a half years in prison.

Macci also was sentenced to three years of supervised release with the first year requiring him to be an inpatient at a drug treatment facility. “I don’t think people need to be defined by the worst mistake they’ve ever made,” Judge Abrams said. “You still have a chance to define yourself in a positive way.”

Before her decision was made, there were those who appeared at the hearing to ask for leniency for Macci in the sentencing. Williams’ nephew, Dominic Dupont, said: “It weighs heavy on me to see someone be in a situation he’s in. I understand what it is to be system impacted.”

David Simon, the creator of the HBO series The Wire in which Williams famously starred, submitted a three-page letter to the judge also asking for leniency, citing Macci’s age and his illiteracy. “What happened to Mike is a grievous tragedy,” Simon wrote. “But I know that Michael would look upon the undone and desolate life of Mr. Macci and know two things with certainty: First, that it was Michael who bears the fuller responsibility for what happened.” Judge Abrams would later state that she disagreed with Simon about the responsibility of overdoses laying with the victims.

Macci pled guilty in April along with three other men to conspiracy to possess and sell narcotics. This group also includes Irwin Cartagena, also known as “Green Eyes” who was identified by police as the head of the operation who sold Williams the drugs. The veteran actor who also starred in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire and Lovecraft Country, died of an overdose in his Brooklyn apartment in September 2021. He was 54. After the sentencing, Dupont referred to it as a “sad day.” “There are no winners today,” he said to reporters.

P!nk and Brandi Carlile Pay Emotional Tribute to Sinead O’Connor With ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ Cover

Just hours after the news broke that Sinead O’Connor had passed at age 56, P!nk found the most fitting way to pay tribute to the powerful, pioneering vocalist whose calling card was emotional poignancy and fierce independence.

On the first U.S. date of her neon-lit, fittingly titled Summer Carnival tour, the acrobatic singer stopped spinning for a few minutes, turned down the bright lights and acknowledged that the world had lost one of its most cherished voices, one that had meant everything to teenage Alicia Moore back before the world knew her power.

“When I was a little girl, my mom grew up in Atlantic City and I used to go down to the Ocean City Boardwalk with my ten dollars and I would make a demo tape… I would make a little cassette tape and imagine it was my demo for the record company,” P!nk told the crowd while standing center stage with piano player Jason Chapman as a hush came over the sold-out baseball stadium.

“And it would always be either ‘Greatest Love of All’ by Whitney Houston or ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ by Sinead O’Connor. So in honor of Sinead, and in honor of my very, very talented friend Brandi Carlile I asked her if she would come out here and sing this song with me.”

The last-minute addition to the tightly scripted and choreographed show featuring the headliner and her opening act was a tall hill to climb at best. O’Connor’s famous rendition of the Prince-penned ballad is one of modern music’s most moving, gut-wrenching love laments. More subdued than the equally untouchable Houston song, “Nothing Compares” is perhaps even more of a vocal challenge because of an implicit, rending emotion that’s impossible to fake.

The heartache in O’Connor’s version, however, could not have been in better hands than P!nk and Carlile’s, however, as the two friends hugged midstage and proceeded to put on a masterclass in impromptu song interpretation. (Keeping in mind, however, that there is plenty of YouTube evidence of both women having sung the song before, so they clearly know its contours.)

“It’s been seven hours and 15 days/ Since you took your love away/ I go out every night and sleep all day/ Since you took your love away,” P!nk sang gently over minimal piano and keyboard accompaniment, her voice floating crisply over the rapt audience.

With tears visible on a number of fans on the stadium’s packed floor, Carlile took over, crooning, “I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant/ But nothing, I said nothing can take away these blues,” the signature crack in her voice adding an extra layer of sorrow on what was already a very sad day for music.

Matching her grit, P!nk leaned into the second verse, wailing, “where did I go wrong?” before they came together to power through the verse, “I went to the doctor and guess what he told me/ Guess what he told me/ He said, ‘Girl you better try to have fun no matter what you do’/ But he’s a fool.”

Carlile then let out a high, lonesome wail as both women appeared to get in their feelings about the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 ballad that turned O’Connor into a global superstar, for good and ill. Neither made the song about them. But what made the song theirs in that moment was the clear conviction that it meant something special to both women, and to all of us, a gift they honored by sharing it with their most adoring fans as the raw feelings were still very fresh.

“You never know what people are going through,” P!nk said after the performance. “It’s not that hard to give people a smile… we’re all learning that lesson together now.”

It was a wise and painful message on what was an otherwise joyous night. And without saying it, they ended by looking deeply into each other’s eyes and beautifully singing the words that will now cement O’Connor’s memory in our hearts and minds forever: “Nothing compares to you.”

Kita Alexander Signs With Lemon Tree Music

Australian singer and songwriter Kita Alexander is the latest addition to the Lemon Tree Music roster, Billboard can reveal.

Alexander signs with the Australia-based artist management company for the world, and will be guided by LTM senior artist manager Elise Naismith.

Kita’s catalog “is anthem after anthem and her new music is no exception,” Naismith comments. “Off the back of her sold out debut headline tour earlier this year, I look forward to empowering Kita as she enters her Queen era, here in Australia and beyond.”

To celebrate the new deal, Alexander today (July 27) releases her new single “Date Night” (via Warner Music Australia), a collaboration with homegrown country star Morgan Evans.

Based in Byron Bay, Alexander’s profile contributes to grow off the back of several high-profile gigs and new releases, including the introspective “7 Minutes In Heaven” and the belter “Queen,” both of which enjoyed rotation on national youth broadcaster triple j.

Championed by triple j from the early phases of her career, Alexander would go on to achieve commercial radio liftoff with the Hit and Nova networks.

Global combined streams top 145 million, and include the EPs Like You Want To and Hotel, the ARIA gold-certified singles “Damage Done” and “Like You Want To,” and platinum-certified “Between You & I”.

Earlier in the year, she teamed up with Australian DJ Fisher on stage at Coachella. The live dates keep coming, and include a performance this Friday, July 28 at the FIFA Fan Festival, set to be held in Brisbane, Australia following the home nation’s Women’s World Cup group match against Nigeria.

Led by co-founders and directors Regan Lethbridge and David Morgan, LTM’s roster includes award-winning homegrown artists Tash Sultana, Tones and I and Budjerah.

“I’m so excited to announce that I’ve signed with Lemon Tree Music,” Alexander says in a statement. “I’ve been self-managed for the last year and a half waiting until I found the perfect fit. I have wanted to align myself with an Australian based management company that has those international ties to really grow my music and brand. Cannot wait to see what we can achieve together.”

Mushroom Group Launches Events and Touring Company MG Live

MELBOURNE, Australia — Mushroom Group spawns a new live entertainment company, MG Live.

Unveiled Thursday, July 27, the independent music powerhouse consolidates a string of its events and touring businesses under the umbrella of MG Live, including Illusive Presents, Roundhouse Entertainment, Good Life, I OH YOU Touring, and Arena Touring.

The fresh collective will focus on developing branded events and experiences alongside its domestic and international headline touring, and will continue to deliver tours in conjunction with sister company Frontier Touring, the powerhouse concerts specialist.

“Throughout the last eighteen months we have worked to consolidate a number of Mushroom’s live interests outside of our leading touring business Frontier Touring,” comments Mushroom Group chairman and CEO Matt Gudinski, who helms MG Live, along with an experience executive team.

“We looked at how to best move forward with our other specialist touring and leading event companies,” he continues in a statement, “and decided the time was right to combine their strengths and bring them under one banner.”

Speaking with Billboard ahead of the announcement, Gudinski says the seeds for MG Live were planted before the COVID-19 pandemic. And as the Melbourne-based company celebrates its 50th anniversary, expect more change and evolution.

“The consolidation that we’re looking at across a number of different areas of the group,” he explains, “you’ll see a number of other things over the next six to 12 months which will really drive greater success, ensure we’re combining our strengths and, really, allow myself and the other leaders of the group to better manage all the different businesses that are part of Mushroom.”

Those businesses number more than two-dozen affiliates active in every conceivable area of the music and entertainment industries, from touring to publishing, merch and marketing services, venues, exhibition and events production, neighboring rights, branding, labels, talent management and more. In recent weeks, Mushroom Group added a new agency, MBA, a partnership with Guven Yilmaz, founder and managing director of Vita Music Group.

Frontier Touring, a partnership with AEG Presents which is unaffected by the new live entertainment company, has teamed with MG Live’s companies which, in the past 12 months, have sold more than 1.3 million tickets combined, according to the business, and produced tours over that time that include Tyler, The Creator, Fatboy Slim, Ed Sheeran, Billy Joel, Richard Marx, Pavement, and more.

The MG Live touring slate for the months ahead includes Robbie Williams and the Chicks performing at a day on the green, plus Fridayz Live and Boiler Room events, as well as tours by 070 Shake, The Teskey Brothers, DMA’S, Valley and Earl Sweatshirt.

As for the brand, is MG Live a reference to Michael Gudinski, the late, legendary founder and chairman of the group, his son Matt, or the broader business itself, Mushroom Group?

“It might be a combination of all of those,” says Matt Gudinski, cryptically. “It just clicked.”

‘Seven’ Co-Writer Jon Bellion Didn’t Understand the ‘Gravity’ of Jung Kook’s Solo Hit Until It Arrived

Singer/songwriter Jon Bellion is currently soaking up the success of Jung Kook‘s solo hit “Seven.” The track sits at No. 1 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100, making Jung Kook the second solo BTS member to top the chart after his bandmate Jimin’s “Like Crazy.”

But Bellion tells Billboard News in a new interview that he had no idea what the song’s destiny was going to be when he was writing it.

“l got a phone call from [record producer Andrew] Watt … this is probably two years ago. On a random Saturday, I kinda just took it into the studio myself and … kinda filled it out,” Bellion recalls. “It kind of in my mind fell by the wayside and was just like, ‘Oh, another song that you work on in a session.’ Like, ‘I really think it’s a great song, super catchy and can be really great for somebody.’”

He continued, “I think a lot had happened — I think [Hybe Corp. chairman] Bang and Scooter [Braun] linked up and they started operating and started to understand each other. I had no idea the gravity of Jung Kook being solo and it being fully English. I had no idea. I didn’t know what was brewing!”

While Bellion played a large role in what the song ended up becoming, he believes that the K-pop star and Latto — who has a featured verse on the track — are the true reasons why the track has had such positive reception.

“Records, when they get to a certain place, it needs to be tailored and it needs to feel like it fit,” he says. “The artists make it their song. We provide the bare bones and we provide the skeleton, but they need to make it believable, so I think that Latto came and crushed it.”

Selena Gomez Sends Birthday Message to Francia Raisa After Last Year’s Falling-Out

On Wednesday (July 26), Selena Gomez shared a sweet birthday message for her longtime friend Francia Raisa, eight months after the two had a public falling-out.

“Happiest of birthdays to this special human being,” Gomez wrote alongside three photos of the pair in happier times. “No matter where life takes us, I love you.”

In addition to being close friends, Raisa — who turned 35 on Wednesday — also donated a kidney to Gomez back in 2017 after the singer/actress suffered lupus-related organ damage. But their tight bond was tested late last year when Raisa — an actress on How I Met Your Father, Grown-ish and The Secret Life of the American Teenager — took issue with a comment Gomez made about another high-profile friend, Taylor Swift.

In a Rolling Stone cover story released in November, Gomez opened up about feeling like she “never fit in with a cool group of girls that were celebrities,” adding, “My only friend in the industry really is Taylor, so I remember feeling like I didn’t belong.”

“Interesting,” Raisa replied under an Instagram post resharing Gomez’s quote, in a now-deleted comment.

On a TikTok video summarizing the drama — which noted that Raisa was no longer following Gomez on Instagram — the Only Murders in the Building star commented, “Sorry I didn’t mention every person I know.”

In May, Raisa opened up to TMZ about the online bullying she’s faced since her back-and-forth with Gomez, telling a cameraman, “The only thing I’m going to say is in no way, shape or form does anyone condone bullying, especially Selena. She literally has a whole nonprofit dedicated to mental health [Rare Impact Fund], and I believe Rare Beauty even just had an event for mental health. So the fact that I’m now being bullied as I am, it’s messing with me mentally.”

As of press time, Raisa hadn’t yet acknowledged Gomez’s birthday post, but she seemed busy celebrating her big day in a poolside cabana, as evidenced on her Instagram. “If I’m not in a bikini on my birthday then it’s not my birthday,” she captioned three pics of herself in an orange string bikini and white eyelet coverup.

We have reached the quarterfinals for Billboard’s Fan Army Face-Off. It’s Wednesday, July 26th. I’m Tetris and this is Billboard News. A lot to get through today so let’s jump right in to our first story.

Jon Bellion:
“This one little section that we thought was super hitty — and it was just a beat that had Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and the hook. Fast-forward two years later, it kind of went crazy!”

Tetris Kelly:
Are you still singing Jung Kook and Latto’s “Seven” repeatedly? It’s this week’s Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 and we’re taking you behind the song. “Seven” is one of the first true A&R collaborations between Scooter Braun and Chairman Bang of HYBE since their partnership began in 2021.

They put the team together that included Andrew Watt, Cirkut and Jon Bellion. We spoke to Jon about how the track came together.

Jon Bellion:
“I got a phone call from Watt. Watt and Cirkut are the two producers on the record. This was probably two years ago. On a random Saturday, I kind of just took it into the studio by myself and just kind of filled it out.”

Love it or hate it, Ice Spice is one of the game’s hottest artists today and even with all the fame and love that she’s been getting, it’s not beneath her to hit up the bodega to get turnt up.

Such is the case for her latest visuals to “Deli, where the Bronx bomber takes to the corner bodega to get turnt up with stacks of cash and a couple of thick friends who twerk before hopping on a party bus and rolling to the next location. Low-key surprised she ain’t order a chopped cheese to go. Just sayin.’

Back in the lands where Midsommer might’ve taken place, Post Malone lends a hand to some of his fellow countrymen and in his clip for “Mourning,” Post finds himself attempting to move a giant cube that he ultimately ends up performing on. Who put that there and why?

Check out the rest of today’s drops including work from DDG, Smino, and more.
