Mammoth WVH Nabs Second Straight Top Hard Rock Albums No. 1

Mammoth WVH makes it two-for-two atop Billboard’s Top Hard Rock Albums chart, as Mammoth II debuts at No. 1 on the tally dated Aug. 19.

In the Aug. 4-10 tracking week, Mammoth II opened with 22,000 equivalent album units, according to Luminate. Of that sum, 20,000 units are via album sales.

It’s the Wolfgang Van Halen-led band’s second No. 1 on Top Hard Rock Albums, following debut album Mammoth WVH, which premiered atop the June 26, 2021, survey with 31,000 units.

With two No. 1s in two tries, Mammoth WVH is the first act to send its first two Top Hard Rock Albums full-length entries to the top spot since Greta Van Fleet, which doubled up with 2018’s Anthem of the Peaceful Army and 2021’s The Battle at Garden’s Gate (and continued its streak with Starcatcher this summer).

Mammoth II also starts at Nos. 3 and 6 on the Top Rock Albums and Top Rock & Alternative Albums lists, respectively. On the all-genre Billboard 200, the set begins at No. 28.

The album’s lead single, “Another Celebration at the End of the World,” peaked at No. 7 on the Mainstream Rock Airplay ranking in June, as well as at No. 10 on the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart in July. A follow-up single has not yet been announced.

One other song from the album makes a Billboard chart: “I’m Alright” debuts at No. 19 on Hard Rock Digital Song Sales. “Another Celebration at the End of the World” hit No. 18 on the survey in April.

TikTok Music Division Hit With Layoffs

The music team at TikTok was hit with layoffs last week in an effort to improve efficiency, multiple sources tell Billboard. The cuts affected seven staff members, including senior product strategy & ops lead Kelly Chen and U.S. music partnerships and operations lead Marisa Jeffries. All affected employees were based in the United States.

Sources say the layoffs cut across departments on the artist services team, including global music, TikTok Music and distribution platform SoundOn.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Chen started at musical.ly as senior manager of strategic partnerships in 2016, prior to its acquisition by ByteDance in August 2018. She later served as head of content partnerships at TikTok, where she acted as head of TikTok U.S. in its early stages.

Jeffries started at TikTok in March 2021, according to her LinkedIn profile; during her tenure, she headed up label relations, facilitating partnerships with labels and distributors across North America. She previously worked in label relations at SoundCloud and on the marketing team at Sony Music.

News of the layoffs comes amid recent major developments on the music front at TikTok. Last month, the company unveiled TikTok Music, the nascent music streaming platform that launched in Brazil and Indonesia before expanding to Mexico, Australia and Singapore two weeks later. Also in July, TikTok unveiled a major new licensing partnership with Warner Music Group (WMG) allowing the company’s music to be used on the main TikTok app as well as in its commercial library, while also giving WMG artists greater access to some of TikTok’s tools to reach fans and sell merchandise. The company also recently launched a new emerging artist program called Elevate to promote artists both on and off the app, as well as Ripple, a music creation tool that uses artificial intelligence to turn a user’s hummed melody into music.

Publishing Briefs: Chemical Brothers Sell to BMG; Styx Stake Rolls to Primary Wave

BMG has partnered with pioneering UK electronic duo The Chemical Brothers and will now administer and represent the band’s entire song catalog, building upon their previous arrangement to represent all of the duo’s works from 2015 onwards. The news comes just weeks before the duo will release their tenth studio album For That Beautiful Feeling.

Primary Wave Music has purchased the publishing rights of Styx member Dennis DeYoung, encompassing the majority of his compositions and master recordings. This includes Styx hits “Come Sail Away,” “Babe,” “Mr. Roboto,” “Lady,” “The Best of Times,” and more.

Concord has purchased a portion of the song catalog of Plain White T’s frontman Tom Higgenson, including his share of “Hey There Delilah.”

BMG has acquired the writer’s share of royalties for Michael Münzing of SNAP!, building on the company’s pre-existing partnership with the 90s Eurodance troupe. The two parties’ relationship began in 2018 when BMG acquired SNAP!’s recorded music catalog.

Simon Cowell and Syco Entertainment have launched Syco Publishing in partnership with UMPG.

Warner Chappell Music and the Warren Brothers have joined together to sign Jet Harvey to a worldwide publishing deal. Most recently, Harvey co-wrote Bailey Zimmerman’s “Rock And A Hard Place,” which ranked at No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart for six weeks.

peermusic Australia has signed Ziggy Ramo to a worldwide publishing agreement. This is Ramo’s first-ever publishing deal, encompassing his back catalog and future works.

Artists With the Most No. 1 Songs on the Hot 100, From The Beatles to Rihanna & More

Over 30,000 songs have graced the Billboard Hot 100 in the chart’s 65-year history. Of those, 1,151 have reached No. 1 (as of the chart dated Aug. 19, 2023) — a select 3.8 percent.

One of the rarest feats, perhaps, is repeating at No. 1 on the Hot 100 10 times — as only 10 artists in history have earned the distinction.

The elite list features eight solo artists and two groups. The Beatles lead all acts, with a whopping 20 No. 1s — a record they’ve held since 1965, when they surpassed Elvis Presley.

Presley, who’s notably absent from the list below, scored seven No. 1s in the Hot 100 era. The start of Presley’s career predated the Hot 100, which launched on Aug. 4, 1958, meaning that some of his classics, such as “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Hound Dog” and “Jailhouse Rock,” preceded the chart’s existence. He did, however, reach the summit with “A Big Hunk O’ Love,” “Stuck on You,” “It’s Now or Never,” “Are You Lonesome Tonight,” “Surrender,” “Good Luck Charm” and “Suspicious Minds.”

As for the artists just outside the 10 No. 1 hits club: Bee Gees, Elton John, Katy Perry, Paul McCartney (solo and with Wings), Taylor Swift and Usher have all topped the Hot 100 nine times, while Beyoncé (excluding Destiny’s Child’s four leaders with her as a member), Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars, George Michael (excluding two billed solely to Wham!) and The Rolling Stones have eight each.

Here are the 10 artists who have tallied 10 or more No. 1 hits on the Hot 100:

Noname Hits Back At Critics For Including Jay Electronica On ‘Sundial’ LP

HipHopWired Featured Video

2018 Austin City Limits Music Festival - Weekend 2

Noname recently released her latest full-length album Sundial to both critical acclaim and a healthy amount of criticism due to a guest feature whose verses some viewed as antisemitic. Noname took to her Instagram Story feed to inform critics that she has no intention of apologizing for having Jay Electronica on the track “Balloons” despite the uproar.

Noname, who has made strides as an outspoken critic of white supremacy and promoting literacy, took to Instagram to address those who found issues with Jay Electronica’s verse on “Balloons,” which many described as antisemitic.

From “Balloons” (Jay Electronica verse):

Face to face I bet nary a devil would test me

And some f*ckboy eighty-fiver come run up and press me

It’s all a hoax, quite simple, a joke like Zelenskyy

The imams, the rabbis, and the Pope, incidentally

Couldn’t stop my boca from quotin’ quotes from the senseis

If anybody asks, tell ’em Farrakhan sent me

Considering that Nation of Islam leader Min. Louis Farrakhan has aimed fiery barbs at Jewish peoples in the past, and Electonica’s “Synagogue of Satan” line from “The Ghost of Soulja Slim” track from his album, A Written Testimony, the New Orleans rapper’s appearance on Noname’s album was primed for this manner of outcry.

Noname spoke directly to those not in favor, as we’ll share below:

Here’s the truth. I am not antisemitic. I don’t hate groups of people. I am against white supremacy, which is a global system that privileges people who identify as white. I’ve been clear about this for years.

I’m not going to apologize for a verse I didn’t write. I’m not going to apologize for including it on my album. If you feel like I’m wrong for including that’s fair. Don’t listen. Unfollow and support all the other amazing rappers putting out dope music. Your disappointment truly means absolutely nothing to me, and I say that with love.

Sundial is available now across several DSPs.

Foo Fighters Break Record for Most Rock & Alternative Airplay Top 10s

Less than three months after tying Shinedown for the most top 10s in the history of Billboard’s Rock & Alternative Airplay chart, Foo Fighters take sole possession of the distinction.

“Under You,” the latest single from Foo Fighters’ new album But Here We Are, vaults 36-8 on the Aug. 19-dated ranking with 3.1 million audience impressions, a 163% surge, according to Luminate.

It’s the Dave Grohl-fronted band’s 16th top 10, the most among any act in the 14-year history of the survey, which reflects airplay on alternative, adult alternative and mainstream rock stations. Shinedown now has the second-most, 15, having broken the record earlier this year via “Dead Don’t Die,” which peaked at No. 3 in April.

Most Top 10s, Rock & Alternative Airplay
16, Foo Fighters
15, Shinedown
13, Cage the Elephant
13, Imagine Dragons
13, twenty one pilots
11, The Black Keys
11, Muse
10, Disturbed
10, Weezer

Foo Fighters tied the record with “Rescued,” which eventually led the list for 11 weeks between May and July; the song ranks at No. 2 on the latest chart with 5.2 million impressions.

The band first reached Rock & Alternative Airplay’s top 10 with “Wheels,” a two-week ruler in 2009.

Concurrently, “Under You” flies 38-17 on Alternative Airplay and 37-21 on Mainstream Rock Airplay. “Rescued,” led both rankings, for 10 and six weeks, respectively.

“Under You” also returns to the multi-metric Hot Hard Rock Songs tally at No. 17. In addition to its airplay, the song earned 269,000 official U.S. streams Aug. 4-10.

But Here We Are debuted at No. 1 on the Top Alternative Albums and Top Hard Rock Albums surveys dated June 17 and has earned 121,000 equivalent album units to date.

Jonas Brothers Super Fan Asked Joe Jonas to Draw Her a Picture, Which She Promptly Turned Into a Tattoo

The Jonas Brothers had a busy week in Boston during their two-night stand at the TD Garden on Tuesday and Wednesday. On their first night they celebrated Joe Jonas‘ 34th birthday and youngest bro Nick suffered an unforced error when he fell into a trap door on the stage and quickly popped back up.

Joe also took some time during one of the shows to grant one super fan’s request, which she happily flipped from a temporary high to a permanent mark. In video shared by a fan named Tarryn, Jonas struts down the catwalk and spots a sign that reads: “Draw me a tattoo?” He then promptly takes a look at Tarryn and proceeds to draw a picture on her poster to squeals of delight as the show continues in the background.

In a TikTok of the moment, Tarryn shows off the result, which consisted of a crude drawing of their faces inside a box, with Joe mouthing the words “it’s me and you.” The video then jumps to a tattoo artist working on Tarryn’s leg and the big reveal of the faces on her shin and the caption, “Best night of my life!!!” In comments she wrote, “I almost threw up making eye contact with him omfg.”

It’s not the first time Joe has flashed his spontaneous ink master skills. Back in January he also spotted a sign that read “Joe, draw my next tattoo” with a similar blank box just begging for a JoBro original design. That time, Joe sketched sketched out a cloud with a lightning bolt coming out of it, which the fan promptly got inked on her ankle. Eagle-eyed Jonatics noted that the image coordinated with the song the Bros were singing at that moment, “Strangers,” which features the lyric: “I just saw the lightning strike.”

So, yes, it apparently is a thing now.

Miley Cyrus Announces New Single ‘Used to Be Young’: ‘This Song Is Dedicated to My Loyal Fans’

As “Flowers” continues to hang around the upper reaches of the Billboard Hot 100 half a year after its initial release, Miley Cyrus is readying a brand new single to continue her “endless summer vacation.” On Thursday (Aug. 17), Cyrus announced that her latest single, “Used to Be Young,” is set for an Aug. 25 release.

The “Wrecking Ball” singer shared the news via Instagram, where she also revealed some more exciting plans with her 213 million followers. “In celebration of my new single release Endless Summer Vacation (backyard sessions) continues. Aug 24 @ 10pm EDT on ABC,” she wrote in a caption for a mysterious promotional clip. “This time with a retrospective interview sharing stories about the first 30 years of my life in honor of [“Used To Be Young”]. This song is dedicated to my loyal fans. I love YOU for loving every version of ME.”

The promotional video finds Cyrus sauntering toward the camera in a sparkling red leotard before switching to clips of what appears to be footage from her forthcoming Endless Summer Vacation: Continued Backyard Sessions.

Although she has been relatively quiet this year, Cyrus has been steadily teasing her new single for weeks. Earlier this month, she teased the new single’s title in the description for the Bangerz 10th Anniversary Deluxe vinyl on her official online shop. On Aug. 15, she took to her socials to post a video of a collection of posters that referenced the lyrics to some of her career-defining hits such as “Wrecking Ball,” “Flowers,” “The Climb” and “Party In the U.S.A.” She captioned the video, “I know I used to be crazy. I know I used to be fun. You say I used to be wild. I say I used to be young.”

“Used To Be Young” marks Cyrus’ first piece of new music since the release of Endless Summer Vacation back in March. That album, her eighth studio effort, debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, and also arrived alongside its own Backyard Sessions via Disney+. The new, reimagined Endless Summer Vacation: Continued Backyard Sessions will stream the next day on Hulu.
