Sia Drops Soaring ‘Gimme Love’ Single Ahead of First Album in 8 Years, ‘Reasonable Woman’

Sia danced back into our ears on Wednesday (Sept. 13) with her bouncy new single, “Gimme Love,” a soaring plea to do just what the title says. “You don’t want to fight for me/ But babe that’s what I need/ Please now just this once/ Fight for me baby/ Sing baby,” the singer/songwriter urges before sliding into one of her patented earworm choruses: “Come now/ Do this just for me/ I don’t ask for much/ Gimme love, gimme love, gimme love, baby.”

The song is the initial taste of Sia’s first new solo pop album in eight years, Reasonable Woman, which she said in a post is due out in the spring of next year; at press time no track listing or exact release date had been announced, though pre-orders for the LP are slated to arrive in May.

Sia’s last studio album was 2016’s This Is Acting, which was mostly comprised of songs she wrote for other artists that were not released on their albums and featured the singles “Alive,” “Cheap Thrills,” “The Greatest” and “Unstoppable.” She followed up with the holiday album Everyday Is Christmas in 2017 and the 2021 soundtrack album Music — Songs From and Inspired by the Motion Picture, the companion to her directorial debut of the same name.

The Reasonable Woman cover art features an image of a woman in orange suit with a striped grey blob for heads and hands, the type of art fans have come to expect from the singer who has often obscured her face in pictures and public appearances in an effort to maintain her privacy. Similarly, the accompanying “Gimme Love” lyric video is a series of snaps of the singer in various locations with color blocks covering her features.

Drake Milligan Returns to ‘AGT’ For Confident Performance of ‘I Got A Problem’

Country music is hot right now, and Drake Milligan looks like a guy who’s making a real fist of it.

On Wednesday night (Sept. 13), the season 17 alum made his return to the America’s Got Talent stage, stared down the barrel of the camera and delivered a performance of “I Got A Problem,” an original song.

Wearing a white denim jacket with a red bandana, and wielding an acoustic guitar, Milligan’s performance was confident, polished. Slick even. He appeared right at home under the bright lights, a year on from his AGT podium finish.

Hailing from Fort Worth, Texas, Milligan has quite the story to tell. He cut his showbiz teeth as an Elvis impersonator and enjoyed a deep run in the 2022 season, finishing third and placing top among all singers.

He followed his AGT stint the release of a 14-song collection, Dallas/Fort Worth, which features Milligan’s writer’s credit on every track. Billboard described the LP as “a steady mix of laid-back, ‘90s Strait inspired come-ons including ‘Save It For a Sunny Day’ and ‘Hating Everything She Tries On,’ the barroom burner ‘Tippin’ Point’ and ‘Long Haul,’ which finds Milligan incorporating an Elvis-esque vocal swagger.”

Earlier this year, Milligan and several members of his band were injured when his touring van crashed into a concrete median in the Lone Star State.

Based on his latest AGT appearance, Milligan has made a resounding recovery. The audience loved it, so too the did the four judges. At the end of the performance, everyone in the room was on their feet.

“Amazing, amazing, amazing, amazing,” was Simon Cowell’s initial response. Milligan is on the way to becoming a superstar, the Brit reckons. “That was amazing.” Cowell was adamant that AGT addicts haven’t seen the last of the crooner. Milligan, he hinted, might even find a spot in one of the upcoming all-star AGT spin-off series.

For the record, America’s votes were tallied, season 18 contestants Anna DeGuzman and Chibi Unity were saved. They progress through to the semis, alongside previously announced competitors Adrian Stoica & Hurricane, Lavender Darcangelo, Ahren Belisle, Murmuration, Mzansi Youth Choir and Putri Ariani.

Paul Dainty, Veteran Concert Promoter, Saluted For ‘Distinguished Service’ to Australia

MELBOURNE, Australia — Concert promotion great Paul Dainty is appointed Officer of the Order of Australia (AO), one of the country’s highest honors, recognizing an individual having made a significant impact in society.

Dainty was saluted during a ceremony Wednesday (Sept. 13) at Melbourne’s Government House.

The U.K.-born live music veteran was feted for his “distinguished service to the community” — specifically, his efforts in organizing the 2020 Fire Fight all-star concert in Sydney, which raised more than A$10 million for bushfire relief efforts.

Dainty has forged an impressive career in his adopted homeland, producing tours and concerts with the world’s leading rock and pop artists, and selling more than 50 million tickets along the way.

The Melbourne-based executive established the Dainty Group/Dainty Corporation in the early 1970s, and got on a roll early on.

First-up tours included the Bee Gees, Diana Ross, Cat Stevens and the Jackson Five. Dainty produced the Rolling Stones’ tour of 1973, a visit that would set up the success that followed.

It was Dainty who produced ABBA’s 1977 tour of Australia, a visit that remains the stuff of legend. Through the friendships made on that trek, ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus entrusted Dainty to tour Mamma Mia! 25 years later. Dainty has the option to produce the hugely-popular ABBA: Voyage in Australia. “We’re looking at it closely,” he tells Billboard. “It’s probably one of the most exciting entertainment events I’ve ever seen.”

Dainty has also produced tours for the likes of Paul McCartney, U2, Guns N’ Roses, Eminem, David Bowie, George Michael, Prince and Britney Spears, and in recent years has expanded the business into international markets, including tours for Eminem and Lionel Richie in South Africa and South East Asia, and pan-Asian dates for Michael Buble.

Today, he’s president and CEO of TEG Dainty, which, since 2016, has been a part of the TEG Group of Companies. The following year, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).

*NSYNC Reunite for ‘Trolls Band Together’ Song ‘Better Place’: See the Release Date & New Trailer

After decades of fans hoping for an *NSYNC musical reunion, the day has finally come: The five-member boy band’s Trolls Band Together soundtrack contribution “Better Place” was announced first thing Thursday (Sept. 14) along with a new trailer for the animated threequel.

The song — which appears to follow in the upbeat footsteps of Trolls lead single “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” and Trolls World Tour opener “The Other Side” — is available to pre-save now but won’t be released until Sept. 29.

The song marks *NSYNC’s first musical release since 2002 (when the Neptunes remix of “Girlfriend,” featuring Nelly, arrived) and it comes just days after the group — Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Chris KirkpatrickJoey Fatone and Lance Bass — stepped onstage together at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards to present the award for best pop to Taylor Swift for “Anti-Hero.” The group last took the VMAs stage in 2013, for Timberlake’s Video Vanguard Award medley performance.

Rumors of *NSYNC’s reunion began swirling after a number of Trolls Band Together posters popped up in New York, featuring the first letter of the *NSYNC logo and a QR code. The code takes you to this site — TakeYouToABetterPlace.com — which teases the whistling pop tune. Timberlake stars in the upcoming film, returning as the troll Branch alongside Anna Kendrick’s Poppy, but the new movie’s plot follows as Branch reunites with his brothers to get their childhood boy band, BroZone, back together. While *NSYNC comes back together for the soundtrack, in the film, Timberlake’s bandmate brothers are voiced by Troye Sivan, Eric André, Daveed Diggs and Kid Cudi.

In the late ’90s and early 2000s, *NSYNC released four studio albums: 1997’s ‘N Sync, 1998’s Home for Christmas, 2000’s No Strings Attached and 2001’s Celebrity.

Trolls Band Together hits theaters on Nov. 17. Watch the new trailer below.

Bonnie Tyler’s ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ Video Reaches 1 Billion YouTube Views

Written and produced by Meat Loaf collaborator Jim Steinman, the track spent four weeks at No. 1 upon its release — and much of its popularity was due to the music video.  The risqué, academic-themed clip was directed by pioneer Russell Mulcahy, who had directed the first video shown on MTV, The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star.” Tyler went on to release one more top 40 hit in 1984 with another Steinman-produced cut: the Footloose soundtrack single “Holding Out for a Hero.”

Back in 2017, during the total solar eclipse, Tyler performed the hit on a Royal Caribbean cruise with Joe Jonas’ DNCE as her backing band, just as the eclipse reached its totality. That week, sales of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” were up 500%.

Don Omar on ‘Podemos Repetirlo’ With Chencho Corleone Topping Latin Airplay: ‘It’s the Music My Fans Want Me to Make’

Don Omar and Chencho Corleone each add a new No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart, as “Podemos Repetirlo” surges 12-1 to rule the Sept. 16-dated ranking.

“It’s the music my fans want me to make, and that’s what I’ll do from now on, to please them,” Don Omar tells Billboard.

“Podemos Repetirlo” was released May 28 via Unisono/Saban. Strong airplay across Latin stations powers the collab to the summit on the overall Latin Airplay tally in its 13th week. According to Luminate, “Podemos” registered 9.7 million in audience impressions, up 60% from the week prior, earned in the U.S. during the Sept. 1-7 tracking week. The Greatest Gainer honoree of the week includes Houston’s KAMA; San Jose, Calif’s KVVF; and San Juan, Puerto Rico’s WQBS as its biggest supporters.

“’Podemos Repetirlo’s’ stickiness at radio is undeniable, congratulations to Don and the Saban Music Latin team on another chart topper,” added Gustavo Lopez, CEO of Saban Music Latin.

With “Podemos,” Don Omar adds his 12th No. 1 on Latin Airplay. He first reigned with “Angelito” for one week in July 2006 and notched eight other champs in the ‘10s, including “Danza Kuduro,” with Lucenzo, his longest-leading ruler: 15 weeks in charge in 2010.

“Podemos” arrives a year after Don Omar’s last No. 1 on the ranking, as he spent one week in charge also through a collab: “Soy Yo,” with Wisin and Gente de Zona, crowned the July 16, 2022-dated list.

Chencho, meanwhile, captures his third ruler. He notched his first and second leaders with “Desesperados,” with Rauw Alejandro, and “Me Porto Bonito,” with Bad Bunny, in July 2022 and August 2022, respectively.

In addition to its lead on Latin Airplay, “Podemos” concurrently commands Latin Rhythm Airplay with a 7-1 climb. On the multimetric Hot Latin Songs, both acts score their best ranking in over a year, as the song ascends 39-32.

Karol G Nabs 18th top 10 with two new entries: Elsewhere on Latin Airplay, Karol G achieves a dual top 10 win as “Mi Ex Tenía Razón” flies 16-3, while “Amargura” jumps 11-9.

“Mi Ex” leads the double top 10 rise with a 37% gain in audience, to 7.67 million earned, during the same period. “Amargura” improves with a 4% gain, to 6.41 million.

With the new top 10s, Karol picks up her 18th top 10, still the second-most among women, after Shakira’s lofty 37 top 10s, the most for any female act and the fifth-most overall.

‘Tiny Desk’ Creator Bob Boilen to Leave NPR

Bob Boilen is leaving NPR.

On Wednesday (Sept. 13), Boilen announced his departure from the media organization after a 35-year tenure. Boilen is the co-creator of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, the creator and host of All Songs Considered and has directed All Things Considered for the last 18 years.

On social media, Boilen wrote, “After 35 years, I am leaving NPR. I’ve had the thrill of creating Tiny Desk Concerts, All Songs Considered, directing All Things Considered for 18 years and so much more. I love the people I’ve worked with, but it’s time to find new challenges. thank you for listening/watching.”

Boilen’s last day on the job is Oct. 2.

An internal memo obtained by Billboard also announced Boilen’s departure to staff.

“For over 35 years Bob has been a fixture here, whether as a long-time producer and director on All Things Considered or as a digital pioneer with NPR Music, Bob’s impact has achieved what few can; he has, through his work, changed NPR and changed the world around us,” reads the memo, written by NPR vp of visuals & music strategy Keith Jenkins and outgoing senior vp of programming and audience development Anya Grundmann.

In the memo, Jenkins and Grundmann add that the Tiny Desk series, which Boilen co-created in 2008, “has set the music industry agenda for the last 15 years” and succeeded in “bringing new audiences to NPR.”

The memo includes a note from Boilen, who states, “I leave at a time when new creative folks will hopefully envision exciting new futures for NPR Music.”

In addition to his work at NPR, Boilen is an accomplished musician and writer. His debut book, Your Song Changed My Life, was published in 2016.

The news of Boilen’s exit follows two other high-level departures at the public radio broadcaster as of late. In August, Grundmann — who worked with Boilen on Tiny Desk in her role overseeing music, podcasts, entertainment and talk shows at the broadcaster — also announced that she’s leaving the public radio giant at the end of the year following nearly 30 years at the organization.

That was followed earlier this month by an announcement from NPR president/CEO John Lansing that he’ll retire at the end of the year following a four-year tenure. Lansing’s time at NPR involved navigating the COVID-19 pandemic and a recent budget crunch. He’ll remain in place until NPR’s board of directors identifies his replacement.

Read the full staff memo on Boilen’s departure below.

All;

Today, we’re sharing the news that one of our longest tenured colleagues, Bob Boilen, is retiring from NPR. For over 35 years Bob has been a fixture here, whether as a long-time producer and director on All Things Considered or as a digital pioneer with NPR Music. Bob’s impact has achieved what few can; he has, through his work, changed NPR and changed the world around us.

Bob’s work on the broadcast side of NPR was extensive, and he later was instrumental in pushing NPR into the digital world at a critical moment of change in media. All Songs Considered, which began as a multimedia online show in 2000 and became one of NPR’s first podcasts in 2005, was a foundational element of NPR Music which Bob helped create in 2007. Bob has continued to produce the podcast weekly, and it’s also heard on more than a hundred NPR Member stations.

While web video was still in its infancy, Bob created Project Song which placed a musician in a Big Brother type environment at NPR for 24 hours, allowing us to observe the song writing process, unfiltered. While its run was short, its impact was great; Project Song’s influence can be found in podcasts like Song Exploder. Project Song also has the honor of earning NPR its first Emmy in 2012.

Finally, there is little left to say that hasn’t already been shared about the Tiny Desk series, which Bob co-founded in 2008. The series has set the music industry agenda for the last 15 years, and it continues to break new ground with its concerts and the Tiny Desk Contest; bringing new audiences to NPR. It is very difficult indeed to go anywhere in the world — whether it’s a battlefield in Ukraine, an embassy in Washington, a farm in the Midwest or a restaurant in Asia — where people haven’t heard about and watched Tiny Desk Concerts. This is the very definition of a global phenomenon.

Bob is leaving NPR with a legacy of creativity and innovation. Knowing of his love for photography and the Eastern Shore, we hope his days continue to be filled with beautiful birds and sunsets — that is, when he can tear himself away from continuing to discover new music in clubs across America. We wish you all the best.

Keith and Anya

A few words from Bob:

I’m retiring from NPR after 35 incredible years. It’s time to find new challenges in life, and I’m excited about some of the possibilities. I leave at a time when new creative folks will hopefully envision exciting new futures for NPR Music. My last day is October 2.

I lived the dream when I came to NPR’s All Things Considered without a day of journalism or radio in my background. I was a musician and a video producer in 1988, but the folks at NPR saw something in me and gave me opportunities to take chances and grow. Within a year, I was directing All Things Considered. I did that for 18 years. I produced hundreds of music stories, brought in music writers, and edited and produced their reviews.

In 1999, I imagined a music show for the internet, and in 2000 All Songs Considered was born. Back then, it was a multimedia show with music. In the summer of 2005 All Songs Considered became what I believe was the first original content podcast for NPR.

With the launch of NPR music in 2007, NPR covered music festivals, including Newport Folk, and, of course, SXSW, where Stephen Thompson’s comment to Laura Gibson became the spark that started the Tiny Desk series. The staff includes such great talent and now the videos look and sound better than ever.

All the while, I got to be in an office with some truly amazing, talented, and fun people. Most of all I just want to thank all of you for making magic happen.
