Doja Cat Continues Teasing ‘Scarlet’ With New ‘Balut’ Single: Stream It Now

“Remember this, girls,” rings the intro of Doja Cat’s latest new track. “None of you can be first, but all of you can be next.”

The intro — lifted from professional wrestler Ric Flair — heralds the beginning of “Balut,” the final song on the star’s upcoming new album Scarlet and its most recent single. The track features production contributions from Yeti Beats, Roget Chahyed and Kurtis McKenzie. The latter two creatives, alongside Doja and Y2K, also have writing credits on the laidback rap track.

“Balut” marks the fourth single from Scarlet. Doja first introduced the world of her fourth studio album with “Attention,” a boom-bap-leaning hip-hop track that debuted and peaked at No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100. A Dionne Warwick-sampling pop-rap track entitled “Paint the Town Red” soon followed as the album’s first radio single, reaching No. 1 on the Hot 100 this week (chart dated Sept. 16, 2023). On Sept. 1, Doja then unleashed “Demons,” a raucous punk-rap track that boasted a chilling horror-themed music video starring Emmy-nominated Yellowjackets actress Christina Ricci.

The release of “Balut” comes the same week as Doja’s star-turn 2023 MTV Video Music Awards performance, in which she delivered a show-stopping medley of “Attention,” “Paint the Town Red” and “Demons.” At Tuesday night’s ceremony (Sept. 12), “Attention” won the Moonperson for best art direction.

Scarlet is slated for a Sept. 22 release with an accompanying headlining arena tour to follow. The Scarlet Tour kicks off on Oct. 31 at Chase Center in San Francisco, CA, with special guests Ice Spice and Doechii.

TikTok is a force these days and with many artists taking to the platform to push their music, Billboard has joined forces with the social media site to launch a new Top 50 chart to track the platform’s most popular singles. You’ll never guess who leads the pack.

According to Variety, one Sexyy Red is sitting atop the TikTok Billboard Top 50 Chart thanks to her smash hit “SkeeYee,” which is followed by Doja Cat’s “Paint The Town Red” and Taylor Swift’s “August,” which come in at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively. Though we weren’t given precise numbers, the new monitoring system will be determined by a number of factors that are relevant in the day and age of social media that we wouldn’t have seen coming in the days of cassette tapes, CD’s and vinyl records.

God, we feel old.

Variety reports:

This is the first official chart in the U.S. to monitor music discovery and engagement on the platform. The chart is based on a combination of creations, video views, and user engagement by the U.S. TikTok community, and will be released weekly on Thursdays.

“TikTok is already the world’s most powerful platform for music discovery and promotion, and each week our passionate community of music fans drives songs onto the Billboard charts. It therefore made perfect sense to partner with Billboard to create the TikTok Billboard Top 50 Chart. The chart gives a clear picture of the music that is being listened to on TikTok, and consequently starting to trend on DSPs and other services,” said Ole Obermann, global head of music business development at TikTok.

“We are thrilled to partner on the first Billboard chart on TikTok,” said Mike Van, president of Billboard. “At Billboard, we are constantly evolving our charts to reflect how fans engage with music and connect them more deeply with the artists they love. We see a clear opportunity to recognize the way music discovery on TikTok is shaping popular culture and are proud to offer this tool to the industry, while offering brands a new way to engage with music fans at scale. You’re not no. 1 until you’re no. 1 on Billboard.”

Naturally, Sexxy Red was ecstatic to be the first music artist to be crowned the queen of TikTok’s Billboard chart and expressed as much when she was informed of the news.

“I am so excited that so many of my songs are charting on TikTok and Billboard’s new chart,” Sexxy Red said, according to Variety. “I always knew I would be a No. 1 type of artist, so I want to thank all my fans on TikTok for running my music up! I’m just being me on TikTok and people love it.”

It’s only a matter of time before Billboard somehow starts charting whatever songs we can’t get out of our heads on a daily basis. Those songs should be interesting to learn.

What do y’all think of the new TikTok Billboard chart? Let us know in the comments section below.

Thomas Rhett’s ‘Angels’ Flies to No. 1 on Country Airplay Chart: ‘This One Is Really Special’

Thomas Rhett scores his 19th No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart as “Angels (Don’t Always Have Wings)” soars from No. 6 to the top of the survey dated Sept. 23.

In the Sept. 8-14 tracking week, the single gained by 14% to 27.5 million audience impressions, according to Luminate.

The 33-year-old Georgia native co-authored the song with Julian Bunetta, Teddy Swims and Josh Thompson. It’s the third single from Rhett’s LP Where We Started, which opened at No. 2 on Top Country Albums in April 2022. Lead single “Slow Down Summer” hit No. 2 on Country Airplay in May 2022 and “Half of Me,” featuring Riley Green, ruled for a week last November.

Before “Summer,” Rhett’s “Country Again” led for a week in September 2021. He banked his first leader almost 10 years ago, when “It Goes Like This,” his third entry (and first of 22 top 10s), began a three-week domination in October 2013.

“This one is really special,” Rhett tells Billboard. “Crazy to think my first No. 1 in Billboard was 10 years ago, and now to be celebrating ‘Angels’ going No. 1 is just really exciting and humbling. Getting a No. 1 in Billboard is not an easy one to get, so we never take it for granted. I’m so grateful for the last 10 years, and can’t wait for the next 10 …”

Meanwhile, as it flies 6-1, “Angels” makes the biggest swoop to the top Country Airplay chart’s to perch since Scotty McCreery’s “In Between” blasted 8-1 in June 2020.

Now with 19 Country Airplay No. 1s, Rhett ties Garth Brooks for the 12th-most since the chart began in January 1990. Among all artists, Kenny Chesney ranks first with 32 No. 1s, followed by Tim McGraw (29) and Blake Shelton (28).

Jeezy Files for Divorce From Jeannie Mai

After two and a half years of marriage, Jeezy has filed for divorce from his wife and former TV host Jeannie Mai, Billboard can confirm.

The rapper filed the petition on Thursday (Sept. 14) at Fulton County Superior Court in Georgia. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution — who was first to break the news — reported that the pair have a prenup in place, and that he’s seeking joint custody of their 1-year-old daughter, Monaco.

According to the document viewed by Billboard, the filing states that the former pair are “currently living in a bona fide state of separation.” The rapper also states that the marriage is “irretrievably broken” with “no hope for reconciliation.”

Billboard has reached out to Jeezy’s and Mai’s reps for comment.

The two met in 2018 during Mai’s time on The Real, but remained mum regarding their dating status. Then, the couple confirmed they were dating in 2019, and revealed their engagement the following year. Because of the tight COVID-19 restrictions, they shifted their wedding from France to their Georgia home in 2021, where they held an intimate ceremony.

“We were really looking forward to having all of our friends and family there to celebrate,” Mai told Vogue in April 2021. “But we had to change all of our wedding plans due to COVID. After Jeezy’s mother unexpectedly passed, we quickly learned that life is too short. And at the end of the day, Jeezy and I really just wanted to become husband and wife. So we decided to turn our original wedding into a mini-mony, where we exchanged our vows in front of our immediate family and a few close friends.”

At the top of 2022, Jeezy and Mae welcomed their first child. “I asked God for a life of love and happiness. He sent me my family,” Mai announced Instagram at the time. “Baby Jenkins is here.”

Sony Latin Iberia COO María Fernández Has Made It a Personal Mission to Mentor Execs Into Superstars

As the COO/executive vp of Sony Latin Iberia, María Fernández is one of the most powerful people in Latin music. She not only runs the operational and financial aspects of the largest Latin music company but is also an artist and management-forward executive who oversees her multiple divisions with a famously empathetic style.

This week, Fernández’s work is at the forefront, as the RIAA Honors, which is celebrating Latin music this year, announced it was recognizing her as industry executive of the year for 2023. Fernandez will be feted during a ceremony in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday (Sept. 19) alongside Gloria Estefan (Icon), Emilio Estefan (industry trailblazer), Sebastian Yatra (artist of the year) and representatives Veronica Escobar and María Elvira Salazar (policymakers of the year).

A native of Venezuela who started her career in media, Fernández is a finance whiz who joined Sony as CFO and rose to the rank of COO five years ago. Her role expanded during the pandemic when she made mentoring and training young executives a central part of her job and a personal mission. She now oversees the strategic approach of the company and all of its different operations, including finance, people experience, technology and acquisitions, and is regularly involved in big artist deals. And ahead of the RIAA Honors, Fernández is Billboard’s Executive of the Week.

Here, Fernández discusses her finance background, her role as a mentor within her community and the state of Latin music around the globe. “It’s a moment in history when you can show that Latin music is not only one genre, and the fact that we have amazing artists representing each one of those genres and seeing that on global charts is extremely fulfilling.”

You have a background in finance. How do you apply that to your job at a music company?

I think I bring to the more strategic, financial and operational areas the understanding of artists’ needs and therefore how we can organize ourselves to incorporate those needs in everything that we do. For instance, an artist will want to do a more expensive video because they have a creative vision. From a purely financial standpoint, you won’t see a return from that investment because the streaming of the video won’t compensate for the level of investment. But when you understand why that is important for the artist and how it fits into the whole strategy, not only do you understand the logic of what you want to do, but you can sell it.

That’s interesting because “Let me talk to finance” is among the more dreaded words one can hear.

Historically, the financial group is the team that says no to everything. And there’s a struggle between the creative and financial groups. One thing we’re trying to do more and more is make sure both sides understand each other’s needs. By the way, you can say exactly the same thing when we’re talking about employees because the base of the values in our region is that we have two rosters: artists and employees, and we need to take care of both of them. You need superstar employees and executives to manage superstar artists.

I think you’re unusual in that you work often and directly with managers. I cannot tell you how many times a manager has told me, “I’m meeting with Maria Fernández today.” What happens when your mutual needs don’t align?

I work with a lot of managers and maybe there’s a logic as to why a manager needs something for their artist, but that need doesn’t necessarily align with our needs in that moment. But it’s always [about] how to make sure we understand each other even if we’re not always going to be on the same page. To me, it’s the messaging. The way I see it, we are here to serve. We’re here to make things easier, [even] with all the limitations we have in a corporation and making sure we follow procedure.

What are you proud of in the last year?

The presence of our artists on the charts and the variety of genres on the charts. Right now, you have urban songs, but you have Shakira on the top of the charts with a song like “Acróstico.” Then you have regional Mexican artists like Fuerza Regida and an artist like Luísa Sonza from Brazil at the top of Spotify Brazil with a bossa nova song called “Chico.” It’s a moment in history when you can show that Latin music is not only one genre, and the fact that we have amazing artists representing each one of those genres and seeing that on global charts is extremely fulfilling. And to be honest, what I’m doing in terms of helping the next generation of executives, especially women, to make sure they’re prepared continues to be the highlight of my career at this point. I’ve dedicated a lot of time to that and I feel very proud of the accomplishments in terms of getting them ready to be promoted, changing jobs, doing new things in the organization.

What did you specifically do in terms of your mentorship work?

What I’m doing personally is I am dedicating a significant amount of time to take care of the career development of employees in the U.S. and also in the region, in order to allow them to take over executive leadership positions in the future. We do mentoring, talk to them, we develop career plans, if they have an issue we discuss the issues, if they need training in a particular area, through conversations we figure out what they’re missing to get to the next level. We follow up on plans to make sure they have everything they need.

That sounds very time-consuming for a busy executive. How do you manage?

You’d be surprised. Sometimes you don’t need to do too much. Sometimes someone simply has a blind spot and the second you tell them about it, they can go in and fix it. We’re always busy. And we’re not always taking the time to analyze where you’re at, what do you like, what makes you happy.  My policy is very simple. Anyone who wants to talk to me can get on my agenda. If they need to talk to me every week, I’ll be there every week.

Is this mandatory?

No. But anyone that asks me to mentor them, I do. At this point, it’s 80% women and 20% men. And the fact that I can do it, shows that others can do it too. If we can have that ripple effect that we can make a little bit of time in our very busy schedules to help someone else when they need it, I think by default this will make us a better company. Formally I started during the pandemic, around 2020. And I’m proud to say that some of the people I started mentoring at that time are now in senior positions in the organization.

I still see very few women in really senior leadership positions in our industry. How can this change?

I am very happy to report that I’m seeing it happening. I personally don’t like the idea of a woman getting the position because she’s a woman, but because she’s the best candidate. And what I’m proud of is, we’ve been able to have many more women in senior positions applying and making sure they’re the best of the best. In Sony Music, we have such talented women in the structure that I don’t think it’s going to be challenging to find very compelling female candidates when you’re trying to fill a position.

What do you see happening with Latin music now?

A big difference is people [who are not Latin] are used to equating “Latin music is urban music,” and that’s not the case. Latin music is very rich, it has a lot of genres, it has a lot of history. “Latino” is not reggaetón. Latino is 100 genres per country. And that to me means more and more artists are open to collaborating with artists from different places. Camilo collaborated with an artist from India; Luísa Sonza is on a song that features Demi Lovato, singing in Portuguese. Soon we will see what will happen with Korean music being more present in the U.S. I think it’s a new era in terms of music.

What is your biggest challenge?

The challenge for a region like ours is, how do we make sure we collaborate with everything that is happening and make sure people understand the music, the artist and what they want to accomplish? How do you create global artists when their presence in some charts is limited? For example, in Brazil, over 90% of the chart is local music, and in general, most of the countries are going back to local music. So, as a global company, how do you balance those things? The importance of the local artist, [and then] the local artist wants to be global. How do we fulfill those dreams?

Here’s Why *NSYNC’s ‘Trolls’ Song Promotion Doesn’t Break Hollywood Strike Rules

*NSYNC set Tuesday night’s 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on fire when they reunited during the broadcast and presented Taylor Swift with the best pop Moon Person for her Midnights hit “Anti-Hero.” The group — consisting of Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick and Lance Bass — spent their time onstage reminiscing about their MTV salad days, basking in the glow of the adoring audience, and getting some serious love from a gobsmacked Swift.

But after Swift admitted she was “not doing well” pivoting from hugging her childhood pop crushes to accepting the award, she also said the thing that was probably on everyone else’s mind: “Are you doing something? What’s going to happen now?”

And then… nothing else happened.

The timing of the reunion was fitting, since less than 48 hours later, *NSYNC announced their first new song since 2002, “Better Place,” their boppy contribution to the upcoming Trolls Band Together threequel starring Timberlake; the song is due Sept. 29. In the lead-up to the awards show, longtime fans were freaking out over posters around New York that appeared to tease the iconic *NSYNC logo that led to this site. That led to rampant speculation that, as Swift suggested, “something” would happen during the prime VMA spot at the top of the nearly four-hour program.

The band did not, however, mention the movie, nor the song, during their appearance, which came in the midst of the the ongoing Hollywood writers and actors strike that began in May when members of the Writers Guild of America walked out, followed by SAG-AFTRA members joining them in July, effectively shutting down Hollywood.

*NSYNC did end up promoting the song in an Instagram post first shared on JT’s feed Thursday (Sept. 14), in which the quintet shared their emotional studio reunion (though there were no tags relating to the film, soundtrack or studio on the post). “So many stars aligned, that’s why I hit y’all,” Timberlake tells his bandmates in the video. “If we do this song, it’s a love letter to our fans. I would be honored to have the group on this song. Who’s ready for a reunion?” The clip then shifts to Timberlake behind the boards giving the rest of the group direction on their vocal tracks while recording his own vocals.

The post begged the question: Did *NYSNC break the rules regarding the promotion of movies and/or soundtracks during the strike?

Earlier this summer, SAG-AFTRA chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland broke down the strike rules about promotion of new or previously completed projects, noting that artists are expected to avoid promoting music created for TV, film or streaming under the old contract during the strike.

“Musicians who are members of SAG-AFTRA are equally subject to the rules around the strike — we cover vocalists in the music industry, as well as vocalists in the film/TV/streaming side and some broadcast journalists — and when any member is working on a project as an actor, then the rules mean that they are not in a position to promote that project, even if they are more generally known as a singer or recording artist,” Duncan Crabtree-Ireland previously told Billboard.

At the time, however, Crabtree-Ireland also said that members cannot enter into any new music licensing agreements or approve any new tracks for film or TV projects and must cease promoting songs already licensed for the duration of the strike.

However, when reached following the VMAs — without specifically mentioning the band or the song — a spokesperson for SAG-AFTRA told Billboard in a statement that: “While some songs are made for a movie under our Theatrical CBA, others are made under our Sound Recording Contract and acquired via a license deal. Songs that are not made under our Theatrical CBA are not subject to the strike order and promotional rules.”

At press time, spokespeople for Timberlake and Trolls studio DreamWorks Animation could not be reached for comment on the promotion of the song, though a source confirmed to Billboard that the track was covered under the Sound Recording Contract.

The 2023 VMAs were noticeably light on the usual parade of A-list and up-and-coming Hollywood actors taking the stage to introduce acts or musicians plugging their latest acting gigs as promotion has ground to a dead halt while the dual strike by actors and writers enters the fall with no end in sight.

The *NSYNC exception is different from the one governing Swift’s recent announcement and promotion of her Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour concert film. After that project was announced, a source close to the film confirmed to Billboard that the Eras doc obtained clearance under an interim agreement struck by SAG-AFTRA covering individual non-AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) productions that meet the same standards the unions are seeking in their negotiations with the studios; the source added that the clearance was nailed down before the Eras doc was shot in Inglewood, California, during the first three nights of the singer’s six-night run at SoFi Stadium.

Billboard also confirmed that the Swift film is included under an assumed name on the list of approved interim agreement projects.

For now, it’s unclear how much, if any, further promotion *NSYNC will do for the song that appears in Trolls Band Together, in which Timberlake’s Branch reunites with his brothers to get their childhood boy band, BroZone, back together. Though *NSYNC got back together to record the song — and fans are predictably freaking out — in the film, Timberlake’s bandmate brothers are voiced by Troye SivanEric AndréDaveed Diggs and Kid Cudi.

Drake is fresh off the release of a new SZA collaboration, “Slime You Out,” which arrived on Friday (Sept. 15) as the first single from Drizzy’s upcoming album For All the Dogs. The green slime-covered cover art for “Slime You Out” originates from Halle Berry getting slimed at the 2012 Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards.

For All the Dogs will be released next Friday, Sept. 22, via OVO Sound and Republic Records. The album marks the 6 God’s eighth studio album and his first solo album since his dance-heavy Honestly, Nevermind project which was released in June 2022 and topped the Billboard 200 albums chart.

Gracie Abrams & Aaron Dessner Perform at Hollywood Forever: Photos From the Concert

“We called this the Good Riddance Acoustic Shows, but we’re doing things from previous times … and future times,” teased singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams. Talking to the packed yet intimate room at the Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever in Los Angeles (which has a capacity of around 150) on Sept. 14, Abrams was joined onstage by her close friend and collaborator Aaron Dessner.

The pair crafted Abram’s stellar debut, Good Riddance, together at Dessner’s Long Pond studio, and as a delayed celebration of sorts recently embarked on a three-date trek of shows in New York, Nashville and L.A. Abrams said she grew up seeing shows at the Lodge, commenting on the beauty of the small room.

“The last show we played in L.A. was at SoFi [Stadium],” she later said with a smirk, nodding to her opening slot on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, while the passionate crowd erupted into cheers and applause. “It’s just like this, a tiny little hole in the wall,” she joked.

Throughout the 90-minute set, Abrams and Dessner coated the room in comfortability both with her introspective songs and their friendly banter. They played a new song called “Sad About It” (Abrams kept her phone in hand “in case of emergencies” since the lyrics are so fresh), and even tossed in a gorgeous cover of Swift’s “Invisible String.”

Before the night ended, Abrams closed with some especially kind words in appreciation of Dessner, saying, “For me to know you in this way has changed my life … I don’t know where the industry would be without [you].”

Peggy Gou Signs With WME for Global Representation

Peggy Gou has expanded her WME representation and is now globally represented by the agency.

Based in Berlin, Gou’s 2023 tour schedule has included EDC Mexico, Sónar Barcelona, KappaFuturFestival, Lollapalooza Stockholm, Electric Castle, Creamfields North and ARC Music Festival. Upcoming plays include Australia’s Beyond The Valley and Wildlands festivals. She’s also played events including Primavera, Melt!, Glastonbury and Coachella.

The South Korean DJ/producer was previously represented by WME for international touring and brand partnerships. She continues to be represented by Technique Publicity.

Gou is currently riding the wave of her latest single, “It Goes Like (Nanana).” The producer’s first track to scale the Billboard charts, it’s currently sitting at No. 4 on Dance Mix Show/Airplay and is also climbing inside the top 40 on the Global 200. The song has earned 27 million on-demand streams in the United States since its release, according to Luminate.

“I really did not expect this reaction,” Gou recently told Billboard. “My song was never on a chart before. In the beginning I wasn’t sure what [charting] meant exactly.” She added that following the success of her 2019 track “Starry Night,” she felt pressured to top it. “Sometimes pressure is a good thing,” she said. “It always kind of pushes me.”

“It Goes Like (Nanana)” is the lead single from Gou’s debut album, which will be released next year by XL Recordings.

Gou is also the founder of PEGGY GOODS, a merchandise company now offering a full range of apparel and accessories lines. A longtime figure in the fashion world, she’s had deals with Louis Vuitton, Versace, Levi’s and Lacoste, among others.
