The Dream Setlist for Usher’s Upcoming Super Bowl Halftime Show

The veteran pop and R&B superstar was announced over the weekend as the halftime headliner for Super Bowl LVIII — here’s how we’d like to see it go.

The man they call U-S-H-E-R-R-A-Y-M-O-N-D will be bringing his decades of hits to the NFL’s biggest night this February. The league revealed on Sunday (Sept. 24) that Usher would be the headliner for halftime of Super Bowl XLIII, via a star-studded announcement video that played off the phone conversation intro to his classic “Confessions” clip.

The timing is right for Usher to be receiving such a spotlight moment: After a rocky mid-to-late 2010s, the pop/R&B great has been enjoying a long-overdue comeback over this past half-decade. It began at the turn of the decade with winning cameo appearances in the film Hustlers and on Summer Walker’s hit “Come Thru,” and has continued in the 2020s with a well-received (and meme-spawning) Tiny Desk concert, a sold-out Las Vegas residency, and additional hits alongside City Girls (2022’s “Good Love”) and Summer Walker again (this year’s still-growing “Good Good,” also with 21 Savage). The announcement of Usher’s Super Bowl gig also coincided with the announcement of his forthcoming Coming Home album, to be released Feb. 12, the same day as the big game.

Perhaps Usher will seize on the opportunity to promote songs from the new LP — but more likely, he’ll use the setlist to show off his bulletproof catalog of hits, which runs from his 1997 breakout album “My Way,” peaks in the mid-2000s with the RIAA Diamond-certified blockbuster Confessions, gets a second wind with the EDM era in the early 2010s, and continues right up to this year. Here’s how we’d like to see him show off that all-time discography on the world’s largest stage.

Eazy The Block Captain Speaks Amid Remy Ma & Papoose Rumors

HipHopWired Featured Video

Eazy The Block Captain

Eazy The Block Captain is still swarmed with heavy allegations that he is dating Remy Ma, the wife of veteran rapper Papoose and the founder of the Chrome rap battle league. While Eazy The Block Captain has yet to address the allegations, a posted then deleted message is adding fuel to the embers of discussion, while Remy Ma and Papoose have yet to speak to rumors.

It appears that a publicist for Eazy The Block Captain has been working for her client to get his story told. Nicole Sabrina, who posts on Instagram as @nikkithecoach_ shared a lengthy statement regarding the Philadelphia battle rapper below.

From Instagram:

9/22/23, I issued a statement to some media outlets advising that @eazyblockcapt1 would be making a statement today and that the exclusive story is available. This was done without Eazy’s consent. I understand that this is a serious error, and I take full responsibility for my actions.

My words and intent are now being twisted at the sacrifice of a client and I cannot have that. Eazy and I have worked together for a few years, and while it has been some time since our last project, I took it upon myself to begin discovery on potential business opportunities from a PR stand point.

Let me be clear, no amount of money was requested for an interview with Eazy. I made it clear that he would be dropping a statement on his own platforms first and that I have received offers for an exclusive interview after the release of that statement. Eazy did not and does not want to profit from an interview, he only wanted to release a statement telling his side of the story. I love our media and blog partners, and understand they have a duty to report the latest information on trending topics, but any blog outlet reporting anything different is not the whole truth.

Via his Instagram, eagle-eyed X (formerly known as Twitter) users caught wind of an Instagram story Eazy The Block Captain posted over the weekend and later deleted.

“If it’s not me, nobody speaks on my behalf. There’s a lot of rumors out there that I will address very soon,” Eazy wrote last Friday (September 22), which is the same day his publicist posted her statement.

Chappell Roan, “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl”

On paper, Chappell Roan’s “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl” represents an eyeroll, as the rising pop star dismisses another bad date with “fugly jeans” and swears off lame dudes altogether. In practice, though, the song is ecstatic: the best track on Roan’s striking debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess blasts off following its conversational opening verse into the electro-pop stratosphere, and when the beat kicks in on the back half of the chorus, trying to resist one of the year’s most giddy pop moments is a losing game. – Jason Lipshutz

Dylan, “Rebel Child”

The guitar snarl of Dylan’s new single “Rebel Child” harkens back to latter-period garage-rock revival, when bands like The Hives and Jet were still soaking up radio spins and commercial synchs — but the rest of the song swerves into a satisfying pop lane full of “woo-hoo” refrains and anti-hater messaging. When Dylan declares, “Oh, baby, I can’t lose, my drum is beating harder,” as the percussion picks up on the chorus, “Rebel Child” reaches a new, synergistic height. – J. Lipshutz

Bleachers, “Modern Girl”

Anyone who’s caught a recent Bleachers show understands that, when Jack Antonoff isn’t helping mold some of biggest pop albums in recent memory, he and his band mates are putting on gleefully raucous performances; “Modern Girl,” the lead single to their upcoming fourth album, bottles some of that onstage energy and brings it back into the recording studio. In between saxophone struts and a wall-of-sound hook, Antonoff’s voice settles nicely into a rapid-fire cadence, each syllable flush with jittery passion. – J. Lipshutz

Yeule, “Cyber Meat”

While Yeule’s 2022 album Glitch Princess, which focused on disassociating with the natural world, featured a daringly synthetic approach to pop, the newly released softscars tries to untangle the various complexities of humanity with an alt-rock edge. “Cyber Meat” is a standout from the new album precisely because it’s something we haven’t heard from Yeule before: as they masterfully deploy hooks over crashing drums and bleary guitar, they sound fearless, and have us wondering where else they might go next. – J. Lipshutz

Slaughter Beach, Dog, “My Sister in Jesus Christ”

The entirety of Slaughter Beach, Dog’s new album, Crying, Laughing, Waving, Smiling, contains a bright indie twang that will make a lovely autumn-sunset soundtrack this season — although the lyrics of the rollicking standout “My Sister in Jesus Christ” might jump out from the background and grab your attention. Jake Ewald’s songwriting touches upon My Chemical Romance, blue Gatorade, a snakeskin purse and “dirty emails on AOL” — and that’s just one of the verse — but does so with a smile and a wink, each reference grabbing your attention without becoming too intrusive. – J. Lipshutz

JP Saxe, “Anywhere”

JP Saxe has described “Anywhere” as one of his favorite songs that he’s written to date, and it’s easy to understand why: the piano ballad functions as a lullaby but never dips into the maudlin, with Saxe soothing his subject that, while he may be away from home, he’s going to be back soon enough. A song like “Anywhere” is tricky to pull off without sounding saccharine, but Saxe lowers his voice to a gentle embrace instead of a showy bellow, making his words all the more relatable. – J. Lipshutz

Brent Faiyaz, “WY@”

Over the soft, insistent tap of an 808 and multi-layered, almost unearthly harmonies, Brent Faiyaz sings of a poisonous lover who’s too alluring to let go: “You take on my ability / You’re the death of me and the remedy.” Just like the subject of “WY@,” the pull of this soulful slow-burn is hard to turn down, and easy to get lost in. – Joe Lynch

Kylie Minogue, “Green Light”

Hailing from Kylie Minogue’s excellent new LP Tension, “Green Light” is a bouncy, bright bop that finds the Aussie pop queen singing her verses in a soft, ping-pong staccato before the disco-inflected chorus takes over. And that smooth sax solo? Just icing on the top of this delicious confection. – J. Lynch

Coco & Clair Clair, “The Hills (feat. DEELA) – George Daniel Remix”

Life’s a party for Coco & Clair Clair on “The Hills,” but the party gets dialed up to 100 with the track’s George Daniel (of The 1975) remix – the chill, house vibes of the song swapped for bouncy U.K. club beats. The duo, whose voices are pitched and sped up in Daniel’s version of the song, hop around from event to event, but ultimately can’t help but think of the object of their affections in the inevitable down moments that come with a busy week spent without their love. – Starr Bowenbank

Slayyyter, “I Love Hollywood!”

Slayyyter’s sophomore effort, STARF–KER, tells the tale of gritty nightlife and the dark underbelly of fame over high octane, maximalist production for 35 minutes straight. Listeners are thrust into her world upon hitting play on the album’s indulgent introductory track, “I Love Hollywood!” — bright lights, drug-filled parties and brushes with controversial pop culture icons are just a sliver of the trouble Slayyyter wraps herself up in, but she doesn’t mind one bit, so long as she remains the well-dressed, enviable center of attention. – S.B.

Kelly Clarkson Surprises Las Vegas Busker With Tina Turner Performance

Kelly Clarkson rocked the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas over the weekend, and she took some time to explore the Las Vegas strip.

The “Stronger” singer took to TikTok to share a clip of herself singing Tina Turner’s classic, “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” with a busker who didn’t immediately recognize the star. However, once the street performer realized that Clarkson was holding the mic, she was visibly thrilled as she threw her arms around the singer for a hug. “I was on my way to soundcheck for @iHeartRadio tonight in Vegas and was tipping this incredible woman killing some Tina Turner and then she asked me to sing and had no clue who I was, and then it hit her, and it made my day! She gives the best hugs and sings her tail off! See ya tonight Vegas,” Clarkson captioned the video.

Clarkson is fresh off the release of the deluxe issue of her 10th album, Chemistry, which contains five brand new tracks — “I Won’t Give Up,” “Did You Know,” “You Don’t Make Me Cry” featuring her daughter River Rose, “Goodbye” and “Roses” — in addition remixes of the album singles “Mine” and “Favorite Kind of High” by David Guetta and Ty Sunderland respectively. There’s also a live version of “Mine” live from The Belasco.

Will Smith is poised to explore a key year in Hip-Hop with a new original podcast on Audible featuring Queen Latifah, Chuck D, and more legends.

The Hip-Hop pioneer and actor Will Smith announced that the launch of a new podcast titled Class of ’88, last Thursday (Sept. 21). The podcast will explore rap music during 1988, a year which saw the ascension of Public Enemy as well as the growth of DJ Jazzy & The Fresh Prince along with the rise of women rappers such as Queen Latifah and Salt-N-Pepa.

In the trailer, Smith begins: “Today, Hip-Hop dominates pop culture but it wasn’t always like that. Before 1988, people saw our music as a passing fad.” The eight-episode series will have Smith sit down and talk with Queen Latifah, Chuck D of Public Enemy, Darryl ‘DMC’ McDaniels, his bandmate DJ Jazzy Jeff, Rakim and Salt-N-Pepa.

Class of ’88 is produced by Audible along with Smith’s Westbrook production company. The podcast network Wondery as well as podcast production company Awfully Nice are also involved in the making of the series.

The focus of the series is notable, as 1988 was the year that Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff became renowned on the scene with their chart-topping song “Parents Just Don’t Understand.” The track from their second album He’s The DJ, I’m The Rapper would earn them a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance. The duo were not on hand to receive the award as they took part in a boycott of the Grammys along with other rap artists due to the inaugural performance not being televised.

“Hip-hop has been a central part of my life for over four decades,” Smith said when contacted by Billboard. “I’m hyped to share my first-hand experiences and those of some of hip-hop’s greatest legends as we delve into the origins of one of the most influential genres of music in history.”

Class of ’88 will be available to listeners on Audible and Amazon Music beginning October 26. Amazon Prime members can also stream the podcast without ads. Check out the trailer above.

R&B/Hip-Hop Fresh Picks of the Week: SZA & Jean Dawson, Sexyy Red, Byron Messia & More

Between Megan Thee Stallion and Beyoncé’s first live performance of “Savage,” a new LP from Doja Cat, and friction between Drake and Charlamagne tha God, it’s been a characteristically hectic week for hip-hop — but there’s also been some excellent music released over the past seven days. With Fresh Picks, Billboard aims to highlight some of the boldest and most exciting new sounds across R&B and hip-hop — from Sexyy Red’s ode to dreads to moody R&B midtempos from TA Thomas and Jean Dawson & SZA.

Be sure to check out this week’s Fresh Picks in our Spotify playlist below.

Sexyy Red, “Shake Yo Dreads”

The Hood Hottest Princess continues her year-long streak of grimy bangers with this delightfully rowdy ode to dreads. Stuffed with hooks at every turn, Sexyy effortlessly embodies the spirit of Waka Flocka Flame with her seemingly endless arsenal of party rap bangers. “F—k the opps, f—k the opps, f—k the opps/ You the cops, you the cops, you the cops/ Gimme top, gimme top, gimme top/ “B—h, I’m hot, b—h, I’m hot, b—h, I’m hot,” she chants over the Kat Lightning & AyoCBass-produced beat. Words to live by.

Jean Dawson & SZA, “NO SZNS”

Fresh off a pair of collaborations with Drake (“Slime You Out”) and Justin Bieber (an acoustic “Snooze” remix) last week, SZA returns with a featured turn on Jean Dawson’s “NO SZNS.” Built around a dry acoustic guitar and shimmering reverb-drowned background synths, Jean and SZA deliver a wistful, plaintive ballad about the ever-present warmth of California. Somewhere between Frank Ocean’s “Biking” and the guitar-centric soundscape of Steve Lacy’s Gemini Rights, “NO SZNS” is perfectly engineered for a late-night drive.

Byron Messia, “Mad Dawgs

Still riding high off the global success of his breakout summer hit “Talibans,” Byron Messia keeps the momentum going with the new single “Mad Dawgs.” Released alongside the announcement for his forthcoming Sad & Famous album, “Mad Dawgs” finds Byron relaying snapshots of life in his native St. Kitts over his now-signature blend of soulful ad-libs, a nimble dancehall flow, and a percussive beat that combines elements of Afrobeats and traditional dancehall drum patterns with a touch of piano.

Chris Patrick, “Slide On Me”

Over an unassuming arrangement, anchored by acoustic guitar and accented by lush strings and 808s, Chris Patrick coasts across “Slide On Me” with an air of effortlessness that’s truly captivating. The laidback production and his prickly high-speed flow shouldn’t work together as well as they do. “And she wanna slide on me/ Take the night off and ride with me/ Is you down? Take a dive with me/ 21 questions, I’d ask you right now/ Is you down to die for me?” he sing-raps — a pitch-perfect lead into cuffing season.

JELEEL!, “GFU!”

JELEEL! has basically become synonymous with zany, rambunctious bite-sized bangers, and that formula remains intact on “GFU!” Across what is essentially an interlude, JELEEL! squeals, whines, shouts and raps over this rage rap-meets-Jersey club banger about, well, getting f–ked up. He’s somehow able to teeter on the very edge of absolute mania for the entirety of the track, never slipping too far in either direction. From the way he plays with different pockets of his voice to the way he warps his intonation to match whatever studio filters are put over his vocals, JELEEL! harnesses a special balls-to-the-wall energy that holds the song together.

Karri, “Lemonade”

So far in 2023, Karri has kept fans enthralled with his slow-burning heaters, including “Only U” and “3 AM in Oakland.” Fresh off a newly-inked deal with Interscope, he drops off his sweet-sounding record “Lemonade.” Scripting sugary lines like, “She’s a tall glass of lemonade/ She’s exactly what I need,” Karri looks to mesmerize his female listeners with his dulcet delivery on this latest release.

TA Thomas, “Bad for Me”

After releasing a fistful of songs, including “June 15,” “W.I.A.(Where I’m At),” and “Pros and Cons,” singer TA Thomas goes on a full-fledged exploration of love, self-discovery, and healing on his debut EP Caught Between 2 Worlds. From dealing with an internal tug-of-war on “Bad for Me” to combating trust issues on “Truth Is,” TA Thomas carves out a soul-stirring effort for his rookie project.

French Rapper MHD Convicted Of Murder, Sentenced To 12 Years

Fans of the French rapper known as MHD are in shock as they’ve learn that the man who is credited with pioneering afro-trap has just been sentenced to 12 years in prison for a murder he is said to have committed in 2018.

According to The Guardian, the 29-year-old rapper, born Mohamed Sylla, along with five other co-defendants were sentenced to prison for the 2018 incident in which they were accused of ramming a young man with a car before getting out and stabbing him to death. With prison terms ranging from 10 to 18 years, prosecutors say the violence was the result of a gang dispute that turned deadly. Three other men involved in the case were acquitted, but those who were convicted have 10 days to appeal the sentencing.

The Guardian reports:

During MHD’s final statement to the court before it retired to consider its verdict after three weeks of proceedings, he again said he was innocent. “From the beginning, I have maintained my innocence in this case and I will continue to maintain my innocence,” he told the packed court.

On the night of 5 July 2018, 23-year-old Loic K was rammed by a black Mercedes and then beaten up and stabbed by around a dozen people in the French capital’s 10th arrondissement.

MHD, whose real name is Mohamed Sylla, denied having been at the scene, but a local resident filmed the incident from his window and the Mercedes was identified as belonging to MHD.

The car was found abandoned and burned out in a car park a day after the killing.

Witnesses reportedly pointed out MHD’s presence by describing his haircut and the Puma sweatshirt he was allegedly wearing. This is despite the rapper’s claims that he was not at the scene.

Though MHD’s family, friends and fans are no doubt broken up over this ruling, the lawyer for the victim’s family Juliette Chapelle, said that “a judicial truth emerged despite the law of silence.”

MHD for his part maintains his innocence and will more than likely appeal the sentence.

Inmate BW0168 AKA, Tory Lanez, Wants To Be In General Population During Prison Bid

Tory Lanez is allegedly trying to show the world he is built for prison life and wants to be in general population.

Inmate BW0168, aka Tory Lanez, does not want to spend his prison bid isolated and protected from the other prisoners because of his fame. Instead, he wants to be in gen-pop because he’s not afraid, TMZ reports.

Per TMZ:

Ceasar McDowell — a member of Tory’s legal team and the CEO of Unite the People — tells us he’s spoken to TL a few times since he was denied bond pending his appeal, and apparently Tory has a preference on where to be housed at the new facility … gen pop.

Indeed … we’re told Tory’s first choice is to be among the other inmates, as opposed to being siloed away in a protective wing … where high-profile inmates often go. Instead, McDowell tells us Tory’s relayed to him … he wants to be among the common crowd, which is somewhat shocking.

The celebrity gossip site broke the news that the convicted felon was being isolated during his bid in North Kern State Prison because that’s usually how prisoners with his status are treated.

Despite being dangerous to be in the general population, Lanez is not worried at all. McDowell believes the miniature rapper can handle himself if put in gen-pop.

The website also reports that Lanez is pushing to be with the rest of the prisoners to take advantage of programs and resources only available to regular inmates.

This One Thing Worries Tory Lanez

While he allegedly doesn’t fear prison life, there is one thing that the “Say It” crafter is scared about: not being able to talk with his family.

During his time at L.A. County Jail, he could speak with his loved ones whenever he wanted. At North Kern State Prison, he no longer has that option.

Fans Are Obsessed With Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce’s Rumored Romance: ‘This Is the Moment’

Fans all over the world are watching as Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce completes one of the biggest plays of his life, hoping with bated breath that he doesn’t fumble the catch — and no, we’re not talking about football here. We’re talking about his apparent new romance with Taylor Swift, of course.

The rumored new couple left NFL disciples and Swifties alike reeling after the “Anti-Hero” singer made a surprise appearance at the Sunday night (Sept. 24) Chiefs-Bears game at Arrowhead Stadium, where she was captured cheering Kelce on from a suite box alongside his mother, Donna Kelce. Fans have spent the hours since poring over footage of the pop star banging ecstatically on the glass and cheering after Kelce scored a touchdown in the third quarter, as well as photos and video of Swift leaving the stadium with Kelce at her side.

The fated gameday came months after Kelce first confessed to having a crush on Swift in July, admitting that he tried unsuccessfully to give her a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it at an Eras Tour concert that summer. From the jump, some Swifties were rooting for the American athlete to become the Grammy winner’s new love interest, especially as rumors broke out that the two had started seeing each other.

And after Sunday, it looks like most of the country is rooting for him as well. “Taylor Swift, dating an American footballer is literally like the declaration of independence,” joked one fan, touching on Swift’s breakups this year from Brits Joe Alwyn and Matty Healy. “free from the shackles of British colonialism! This is the moment.”

One fan tweeted, “if this sticks they will literally be the closest thing america has to a royal couple.”

“The chokehold that Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift has on me is INSANE,” wrote another.

Even NFL pros have been weighing in on the matter. After the game, Bill Belichick joked: “Travis Kelce has had a lot of big catches in his career — this would be the biggest.”

Patrick Mahomes too reflected on his touchdown pass to Kelce, saying he knew he “had to get [the ball]” to his teammate to help impress Swift. “I think he wanted to get in the end zone just as much as all the Swifties wanted him to,” added the quarterback.

Keep reading to see some of the best fan reactions to Taylor Swift’s appearance at Arrowhead Stadium — and her likelier-than-ever romance with Travis Kelce — below.
