With the No. 1 bow of Autumn Variations, Sheeran is the only artist to earn at least two new No. 1s on Top Album Sales in 2023. Autumn’s arrival comes just five months after Sheeran last hit No. 1, when his previous studio set, – (Subtract), launched at No. 1 on the May 20-dated tally, spending a week in charge. Only one other act has had two albums at No. 1 in 2023, but they did so with a carryover title that first hit No. 1 in 2022: Taylor Swift. Her Midnights album had 14 weeks at No. 1 nonconsecutively from Nov. 5, 2022, through June 10, 2023, while her Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) debuted at No. 1 on the July 22, 2023, chart, logging two weeks at No. 1.

Autumn Variations was announced on Aug. 24, a little over a month before the album was released on Sept. 29.

Also in the top 10 of the new Top Album Sales chart: titles from NCT, Joe Hisaishi and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Wilco, Grateful Dead, Lil Peep all debut in the top 10, while Green Day’s Dookie re-enters the chart in the top 10 after its 30th anniversary reissue, and Jason Isbell’s Southeastern surges back onto the chart following its 10th anniversary reissue.

Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.

Of Autumn Variations’ 46,500 first-week sales, physical sales comprise 33,500 (17,500 on CD and 16,000 on vinyl – his largest week ever on vinyl) and digital downloads comprise a little over 13,000. The set also launches at No. 1 on the Vinyl Albums chart, marking his fourth No. 1 on the 12-year-old tally. The album’s debut-week sales were bolstered by its availability across five vinyl variants, a signed CD and a deluxe digital edition of the album with live versions of each of the album’s songs.

Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts falls 1-2 on Top Album Sales with nearly 16,000 sold (down 31%). NCT’s Golden Age: The 4th Album debuts at No. 3 with 13,000 sold, marking the third top 10-charting effort for the Korean pop ensemble.

Joe Hisaishi and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s A Symphonic Celebration: Music From the Studio Ghibli Films of Hayao Miyazaki bows at No. 4, following its vinyl release on Sept. 29. The set was initially released via digital download and CD on June 30. In the week ending Oct. 5, the Celebration album sold 12,500 copies – with 12,000 of that sum on vinyl, marking the single biggest sales week for a classical album on vinyl since Luminate began electronically tracking music sales in 1991. (Its vinyl sales were enhanced by its availability in five vinyl variants.)

With 12,500 overall copies sold, Celebration logs the second-largest sales week for a classical album released in 2023, following Def Leppard’s Drastic Symphonies (15,000; June 3-dated chart).

Wilco logs its ninth top 10-charting effort on Top Album Sales as the band’s new studio set, Cousin, debuts at No. 5 with a little over 12,000 copies sold. Green Day’s Dookie re-enters the chart at No. 6 with 11,000 sold (up 1,744%) following its 30th anniversary deluxe reissue. The album peaked at No. 2 in 1995 and hasn’t been in the top 10 since April of that year. Grateful Dead’s Wake of the Flood debuts on Top Album Sales at No. 7 following its 50th anniversary reissue. The set, first released in 1973, sold nearly 10,500 copies in the tracking week (up from a negligible sum the previous week). Jason Isbell also celebrates an anniversary, as his Southeastern album re-enters at No. 8 – a new peak and its first week in the top 10 – with 10,000 sold (up 4,723%) after its 10th anniversary reissue. The album originally peaked at No. 23 in June of 2013.

The physical commercial debut of Lil Peep’s 2016 mixtape Hellboy prompts the album’s debut at No. 9 on Top Album Sales with nearly 10,000 sold. It was released via CD, vinyl and cassette on Sept. 29, but was previously available as a digital download (and via streaming services). It’s the fourth top 10-charting set for the late rapper, who died in 2017. All of his charting efforts on Top Album Sales debuted on the list following his passing.

Closing out the top 10 on Top Album Sales is V’s Layover, which falls 3-10 with 9,000 sold (down 22%).

In the week ending Oct. 5, there were 1.695 million albums sold in the U.S. (up 8.8% compared to the previous week). Of that sum, physical albums (CDs, vinyl LPs, cassettes, etc.) comprised 1.369 million (up 11.1%) and digital albums comprised 327,000 (down 0.1%).

There were 573,000 CD albums sold in the week ending Oct. 5 (up 6.7% week-over-week) and 784,000 vinyl albums sold (up 14.2%). Year-to-date CD album sales stand at 26.160 million (up 0.5% compared to the same time frame a year ago) and year-to-date vinyl album sales total 34.883 million (up 19.4%).

Overall year-to-date album sales total 75.521 million (up 6.0% compared to the same year-to-date time frame a year ago). Year-to-date physical album sales stand at 61.449 million (up 10.4%) and digital album sales total 14.071 million (down 9.7%).

Mariah The Scientist Signs With Epic Ahead of New Album ‘To Be Eaten Alive’

Mariah The Scientist is the newest signee to Epic Records. The singer/songwriter joins a roster that boasts Future, Travis Scott, 21 Savage, Giveon and more. To celebrate, the singer released her newest single, “From a Woman,” released early Friday morning (Oct. 13).

“I was reluctant to signing any new deal, “Mariah tells Billboard. “But I was excited to find a partner that understands me as an artist and has the infrastructure to support me in the ways I need most.”

Mariah developed traction for her love-drunk singles “Always n Forever” featuring Lil Baby and “Spread Thin.” Produced by London on Da Track, “From a Woman” follows that same trajectory as she sings about finally finding a convincing romance worth her time. I close my eyes and trust your plan / Won’t no one force my hand /You’ve paid the cause for true romance / And you want my love again,” she sings.

“Mariah is a dynamic creative force with a clear vision for her music and the experience surrounding it.” says Ezekiel Lewis, president of Epic. “She is well equipped to help lead R&B music into the future and we could not be more thrilled to be her partners on that journey.”

“From A Woman” will feature on her third album, To Be Eaten Alive, and will drop on Oct. 27. “Scorpions, like myself, are considered non-social and solitary animals,” says Mariah when describing her upcoming effort. “Interacting only on rare occasion, such as courtship. For the grand and notable lion, the scorpion seems to be a small feat. They are an unpredictable match and yet they establish a mutual respect for each other’s curious differences.”

Here’s How Beyoncé’s $580M Renaissance World Tour Stacks Up in the Billboard Boxscore

After repeated monthly triumphs, a series of broken records and 39 cities turned to mute, Beyoncé closed out the Renaissance World Tour on Oct. 1. According to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore, the tour grossed $579.8 million and sold 2.8 million tickets across 56 shows in North America and Europe.

In a vacuum, those are massive numbers. And in the context of Boxscore’s nearly 40-year history, they are monumental. The Renaissance World Tour is the highest grossing tour by a woman, by a Black artist and by any American soloist.

Among women and domestic solo acts, Beyoncé passes Madonna’s Sticky & Sweet Tour, which broke ground upon its 2009 finale with $407.7 million. Among Black acts, she replaces herself atop the heap, exceeding The Formation World Tour’s 2016 gross of $256.1 million by a margin of 2.26 to 1. In the interim, The Weeknd’s ongoing After Hours Til Dawn Tour has slid in the middle, with a gross of $305.9 million as of Sept. 30.

Doubling her previous peak – already a towering high that topped Boxscore’s 2016 year-end round-up – and digging deep into the record books, Beyoncé breaks the top 10 highest grossing tours of all time, hitting No. 7. She’s barely blocked by Guns N’ Roses’ Not in This Lifetime… Tour, which earned $584.2 million from 2016-19, and ahead of The Rolling Stones’ A Bigger Bang Tour, which brought in $558 million from 2005-07.

Notably, those tours ran for four years and three years, respectively. In fact, the Renaissance World Tour is the only one among the all-time top 10 to take place within one calendar year. At 56 shows, it played for roughly half the length of all-timers by Coldplay, The Rolling Stones and U2; about one fifth of Ed Sheeran’s The Divide Tour; and one sixth of Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour.

Post-pandemic-era ticketing practices such as dynamic pricing and primary market resale have allowed fan demand to push an artist’s market value higher than ever before. The Renaissance World Tour averaged $253 a ticket, allowing grosses to bloom quicker than her fellow all-time leaders.

The next highest one-year earner is Taylor Swift’s Reputation Stadium Tour, which brought in $345.7 million in 2018. Coincidentally, Beyoncé and Swift have shared a very bright spotlight this year, as their concurrent treks have dominated headlines and boosted economies. Official numbers have yet to be reported for The Eras Tour, but it’ll likely join the Renaissance World Tour in this vaulted space.

In speeding to the all-time top 10, Beyoncé maintained a breathtaking pace from May through October. The Renaissance World Tour earned $141.8 million and sold more than a million tickets from 21 shows in Europe. (Previous reports cited $154 million, but official numbers have since been adjusted.) That evens out to $6.8 million and just under 50,000 tickets (49,873) per show.

Though those averages were already the highest of any leg of any Beyoncé tour, (much) bigger business awaited across the pond. Her 35 Renaissance shows in the U.S. and Canada averaged $12.5 million each night. In all, the North American leg earned $438 million, alone enough to break the global touring records referenced above.

Three shows at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. (Los Angeles area), earned $45.5 million and sold 156,000 tickets. That makes it the sixth-highest grossing engagement in Boxscore history. Like the tour it was a part of, it’s the biggest reported Boxscore for a woman, Black artist and American soloist. And like its parent tour, it reaches its all-time status with brevity. The five higher-grossing engagements range from a six-night stay at London’s Wembley Stadium for Coldplay to Harry Styles’ 15-show mini-residency at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

The tour follows Renaissance, Beyoncé’s latest solo LP. The set debuted atop the Billboard 200 last year and spawned two top 10s on the Billboard Hot 100 – “Break My Soul,” which became her seventh No. 1 hit, and “Cuff It,” which became her longest-charting song on the tally earlier this year. Renaissance and both singles won Grammy awards at this year’s ceremony, making her the most awarded singer in Grammy history.

And while the Renaissance World Tour has come to a close, its lifespan hasn’t ended just yet. Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé opens in theaters on Dec. 1, distributed directly by AMC Theaters.

Across her 20-year solo career, Beyoncé has grossed more than $1.3 billion and sold 11.6 million tickets, including her portion of co-headline runs with Jay-Z, and Alicia Keys and Missy Elliott.

Britney Spears ‘The Woman In Me’ Memoir Audiobook to Be Narrated By Actress Michelle Williams

Five-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams will narrate Britney Spears‘ upcoming tell-all memoir, The Woman in Me. The singer revealed the news to People magazine in a statement on Friday (Oct. 13), noting that she will read the introduction to the audiobook version, but that Williams will read the rest of the book due out on Oct. 24.

“This book has been a labor of love and all the emotions that come with it,” Spears told the magazine in a statement. “Reliving everything has been exciting, heart-wrenching, and emotional, to say the least. For those reasons, I will only be reading a small part of my audiobook. I am so grateful to the amazing Michelle Williams for reading the rest of it.”

In revealing her first turn as an audiobook narrator, Williams — who like Spears has been in the public eye as a performer since her early teens — said in a statement, “I stand with Britney.”

The book announced in July — more than a year after Spears was released from a restrictive 13-year conservatorship — promises to reveal “for the first time her incredible journey — and the strength at the core of one of the greatest performers in pop music history.”

In a video tease after the announcement, Spears said, “My book is coming out very, very soon. I worked my ass off for this book. I had a lot of therapy to get this book done, so you guys better like it. If you don’t like it, that’s fine too.” The audiobook version of The Woman in Me will be published simultaneously with the other editions of the book.

In addition to the book, Spears will be back on the big screen for a fan event re-release of her 2002 coming-of-age road-trip dramedy Crossroads, which will hit screens across the world on Oct. 23 and 25.

Cody Johnson on the Songs Behind New Album ‘Leather,’ Working With Jelly Roll and Brooks & Dunn: ‘People Appreciate Authenticity’

The cover art for Cody Johnson’s album, Leather, out Nov. 3 on COJO Music/Warner Music Nashville, features a closeup of the singer’s tattooed hands, work-worn and slightly bloodied, holding tightly to a strip of leather.

A former bull rider, the Texan is better known nowadays for his energetic showmanship, and his nine-week Billboard Hot Country Songs No. 1 “’Til You Can’t.” But when the 2023 CMA male vocalist of the year nominee is not making music, Johnson is riding, roping and training horses and raising cattle — as he was the day the album cover was shot.

“I was working at the ranch that day, so I told my photographer Chris Douglas to come over,” Johnson tells Billboard. “That’s blood and hair in that picture from castrating bulls and giving them shots that day. We didn’t stage any of that. We got started at 5:00 a.m. and worked all day and he ended up getting some incredible photos while we were working.”

Cody Johnson

Chris Douglas

The cover image conveys a sense of work ethic, grit, and an uncompromising sense of self, all of which are apparent on this 12-song project, the follow-up to 2021’s Human: The Double Album. As with his previous albums, Johnson’s mission wasn’t to simply find the best songs, but to record songs that reveal nuances of his own artistry.

“People appreciate authenticity, whether it’s me being a cowboy and singing something that reminds people of ‘90s country stuff they grew up on, or someone like the Zach Bryans and guys that are more like what probably is considered Americana, or Jelly Roll, who is completely the opposite of me, musically,” Johnson says. “But authenticity is the common thread.”

Aiding Johnson in keeping it real are his producer Trent Willmon, Durango Artist Management’s Scott Gunter and WMN co-chair/co-president Cris Lacy. “They filter through thousands songs before they come up with enough to bring to me,” Johnson says. “They come out on the road for three or four days at a time. We get up, have coffee and breakfast and we start listening all the way up until showtime.”

The songs that made the cut on Leather are odes to the Lone Star State (“That’s Texas”) and country music (“Long Live Country Music,” with iconic ‘90s country duo Brooks & Dunn), arena rockers (“People in the Back,” “Double Down”), love (“The Painter”) and redemption (“Whiskey Bent” with Jelly Roll).

But it’s the title track, written by Johnson’s WMN labelmate Ian Munsick with Rivers Rutherford and Jeremy Spillman, that marks the heart of the album. Lyrically, the song employs the essential material working cowboys have long depended on for saddles and boots, as an apt metaphor for a cowboy himself. Munsick played Johnson the song while the two were touring together.

“My jaw dropped,” Johnson recalls. “Everything about a cowboy has to do with leather, so lines about it taking ‘Years of work and dirt and hurt to make him,’ or ‘He’ll start out stiff and rough, but give him time and he’ll soften up/ And that just makes him twice as tough’… It is so well-written. It also has this cool yodel thing; I almost took that out, but Trent said, ‘You have to do that. That’s cowboy.’”

A deluxe version of the album (featuring another 12 songs) is on the way next year. And yes, Johnson says the deluxe project will feature more collaborations. “Those are the ones I can’t mention,” he says with a laugh. He was more forthcoming about some of the songs that make up Leather, offering his first in-depth look at some of the songs from the album.

“The Painter”

Leather’s first single, the heartfelt, romantic “The Painter,” which has risen to No. 28 on the Country Airplay chart, was written by Kat Higgins, Benjy Davis and Ryan Larkins.

“I think it’s the first song I’ve ever recorded where I sing it in my talking voice,” Johnson says. “I intentionally tried to stay out of the way of the song, so the listener could paint their own image, and have their own interpretation of it. But for me, obviously, it’s about my wife [Brandi]. Without her, my world wouldn’t be what it is. We’ve been together for 15 years, so we’ve had some real highs, had some real lows. We’ve been through a lot together. She has stuck with me through thick and thin, and I think she deserves for me to be able to say this song is for her.”

“Whiskey Bent” (feat. Jelly Roll)

“I hated the title,” Johnson says of first being introduced to “Whiskey Bent,” written by Adam James, Mikey Reaves and Rocky Block. “They told me the title and I said, ‘I hate it already because it sounds like an old cliché; I’m not singing that song. But then I heard the lyrics about trying to put a life and a love back together—especially the hook, ‘I’m still trying to straighten out what whiskey bent.’”

Originally, “Need a Favor” hitmaker Jelly Roll was slated to perform another track on the album, “Jesus Loves You” — until they got into the studio to record the song.

“He asked me what else I was working on and I played him ‘Whiskey Bent.’ He just started crying and was like, ‘Bro, I ain’t never heard a song like that. If I’m gonna be on a song, can it be that one?’ I gave him the entire second verse. It didn’t take him long to learn the song and he did incredibly.”

Though Jelly Roll and Johnson outwardly seem like opposites, Johnson says they both related deeply to the song’s message of redemption. “I think we’ve both lived that song in our own ways. People look at me as this clean-cut, wholesome guy, but I’m no different than anybody else,” Johnson continues. “I’ve got demons in my closet and things in my past that are hard to deal with, that I go to therapy sometimes to deal with. I’ve lived a very fast-paced, lot-of-pressure kind of life and I’ve made mistakes. I haven’t started doing regular sessions; I need to talk in the moment. I’m slowly but surely softening up, just like the song ‘Leather.’ I know it takes time to open up and not be so hard-edged on that. But just recognizing it is the hard part.”

“Watching My Old Flame”

“It’s a great play on words,” Johnson says of this Kat Higgins/Wynn Varble/Clint Daniels composition. “Usually when I hear a song, I don’t want to know who the writers are on it, because a lot of times you get surprised. But here, I know Clint personally and he pitched me the song and it was very personal for him because it was about his divorce. He explained, ‘We knew we were going to divorce but we were still living together while we sorted it out and she was seeing somebody else.’ I went, ‘Wow.’ He was literally watching his old flame go out.”

“Long Live Country Music” (feat. Brooks & Dunn)

In 2022, Johnson took home two trophies at the CMT Music Awards, including digital-first performance of the year and male video of the year (for “’Til You Can’t”). It was his male video of the year award acceptance speech that led to this Brooks & Dunn collaboration (Johnson previously teamed with B&D’s Ronnie Dunn and Kix Brooks on the duo’s Reboot album).

“At the end of the speech, I said, ‘Long live country music,’ and that night Trent called me about writing a song with that title.” Willmon wrote the tune with Phil O’Donnell and Wade Kirby and then played it for Johnson. “It ended up being a perfect fit for me. I reached out to Ronnie and said, ‘Would you and Kix be cool with doing this? We have a country music anthem here and if anybody can fly the flag of ‘Long Live Country Music,’ it’s Brooks & Dunn.’ We recorded this the same day I recorded with Jelly Roll. We also did a track with Randy Houser that day, and I think he might be holding onto that song.”

“Jesus Loves You”

“I think this song will raise some eyebrows, but you don’t get to sing about anger very often,” Johnson says. Rage and restraint drive this story song about divine second chances, written by HARDY, Michael Holman and Chase McGill. The general sonic tone, content and the use of a choir feels similar to HARDY’s hit Lainey Wilson collaboration “Wait in the Truck.” “It’s about a guy whose home is broken into, and he basically tells the person who broke into their home that he’s lucky he wasn’t killed while trying to break in. He’s basically saying, ‘God must’ve been looking out for you, but if you try that again, it’s over for you,’” Johnson says.

“Make Me a Mop”

As many country artists have done before him, Johnson closes the album with this spiritual-minded track, written by Jessi Alexander, Connie Harrington and Allen Shamblin.

“I think it’s highly ironic that there’s a song called ‘Jesus Loves You’ and it’s nowhere near a gospel song, and then there’s a gospel song, but it’s called ‘Make Me a Mop.’ But I got four lines into this song and just started weeping,” Johnson says, noting the lyric, “Make me a spoon, smooth on the edges/ When my words want to reach for a knife.”

He added, “This song was kind of my first step toward saying, ‘I do need to be more malleable and loosen the reins a bit, and let God shape me, my family and career and address those things in my past that I’ve never forgiven myself for. When I recorded this, for me it was a prayer, not a song.”

It’s that time of the year when New Yorkers spot people dressed up as their favorite superheroes, supervillains, and pop culture icons taking a ride on the train because New York Comic Con is back.

The annual celebration of all things geeky is back and in full effect at the Jacob K. Javits Center. The event officially kicked off on Thursday, October 12, marking the second full convention at maximum capacity since the COVID-19 pandemic and all restrictions were lifted.

Like we always do, HipHopWired/Cassius Life is on the scene and on the prowl for the best cosplay, and we most definitely spotted some winners.

While roaming the halls of the giant convention center, we spied a Doctor Strange (pictured above) and Tony Stark cosplays that could serve as stunt doubles for the actual cast members from the Marvel films.

Cosplayers As Video Game Characters

The world of video games was also well-represented at NYCC. We ran across what we believe is the best Call of Duty cosplay we have ever seen.

Just look at the cosplay of Simon “Ghost” Riley below. It’s impressive.

Janet Jackson to Headline 2023 World AIDS Day Concert: Exclusive

Music icon Janet Jackson is set to headline this year’s World AIDS Day concert. The five-time Grammy winner and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee’s full-length show — in support of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s (AHF) annual event benefiting HIV/AIDS awareness — will take place Dec. 1 at NRG Arena in Houston.

Also joining Jackson at the event as a speaker will be Emmy, Grammy and Golden Globe award-winning choreographer, director and producer Debbie Allen. In addition, AHF will present its lifetime achievement award to Emmy-winning actor and activist Blair Underwood.

Jackson’s upcoming performance follows the singer-songwriter’s most recent concert trek. The Together Again Tour borrowed its name from Jackson’s eighth No. 1 single. Released in 1997, “Together Again” marked her personal tribute to a friend she lost to AIDS and also to AIDS victims and their families worldwide. The tour went on to become the artist’s highest-grossing outing to date, earning $50.9 million according to Billboard Boxscore.

A staunch activist in the fight against HIV/AIDS over the last three decades, Underwood co-founded Artists for a New South Africa to direct attention to the catastrophic impact the disease has had on families and children across the continent. The actor also joined actress Ashley Judd as a spokesperson for YouthAIDS in 2003. Since then, Underwood has been working in partnership with AHF, particularly in Washington, D.C. According to the foundation, the district houses the most HIV cases per capita which is nearly three times the national rate.

“I’m so honored to be receiving this gracious award by AHF,” said Underwood in a statement. “We have had a long-standing partnership in the fight against HIV/AIDS, and there is still more work to be done.”

Previous AHF World AIDS Day concert performers include Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Hudson, Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle and Diana Ross. Among advocates who have received the foundation’s lifetime achievement award are Harry Belafonte, Debbie Allen, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and, posthumously, Princess Diana.

Proceeds from the World AIDS Day concert will benefit HIV/AIDS awareness. Tickets will be available online through Ticketmaster beginning Monday, Oct. 16 (3 p.m. ET/noon PT).

‘A Grammy Salute to 50 Years of Hip Hop’ to Air Dec. 10 on CBS

This year will end as it began, with an all-star Grammy salute to hip-hop. On Sunday, Dec. 10, CBS will air the live, two-hour concert special A Grammy Salute to 50 Years of Hip Hop. An extended “50 Years of 50-Hop” segment was one of the highlights of the 65th annual Grammy Awards on Feb. 5. That kicked off a year of hip-hop celebrations that has underscored the importance and dominance of the genre.

The lineup includes Black Thought, LL Cool J and Queen Latifah, all of whom were also part of the Grammy telecast salute, as well as Bun B, Common, De La Soul, Jermaine Dupri, J.J. Fad, Talib Kweli, The Lady of Rage, MC Sha-Rock, Monie Love, The Pharcyde, Questlove, Rakim, Remy Ma, Uncle Luke and Yo-Yo. More performers will be announced in the coming weeks.

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson of Two One Five Entertainment and LL Cool J will also serve as executive producers of the special, which tapes Nov. 8 at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles. The show was originally set to tape on Aug. 11, which was the 50th anniversary (to the day!) of a back-to-school party in The Bronx that many point to as the beginning of hip-hop culture.

A Grammy Salute to 50 Years of Hip Hop is produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment. Collins, Shawn Gee, Dionne Harmon, Claudine Joseph, Fatima Robinson and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay also serve as executive producers. Marcello Gamma serves as director.

Questlove curated the 15-minute spot on the Grammy telecast, which featured three dozen rap acts. Collins, Robinson and Gee (Questlove’s manager and president of LNU) were also among the producers of that segment.

The segment drew universal praise. Billboard’s Joe Lynch pegged it as the best performance on the 2023 Grammys telecast. “While it’s an impossible task to sum up 50 years of any genre (much less one that fought for decades to get a modicum of mainstream respect and eventually became the dominant genre in American music), this electrifying medley brought to vivid life the charged personalities, thumping grooves, deft deliveries and unpredictable flourishes that make hip-hop a global force.”

While many will assume that the success of the spot on the Grammy telecast led CBS to hurry a special into production, the special was in the works before anyone knew there would be a segment on the telecast, according to a source.

Harvey Mason jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, hinted at the upcoming special in a statement announcing the telecast segment. “For five decades, Hip Hop has not only been a defining force in music, but a major influence on our culture,” he said. “Its contributions to art, fashion, sport, politics, and society cannot be overstated. I’m so proud that we are honoring it in such a spectacular way on the Grammy stage. It is just the beginning of our year-long celebration of this essential genre of music.”

The Grammys have not always been hip-hop supporters. The awards show didn’t have a dedicated category for rap or hip-hop until the 1988 awards, which were presented Feb. 22, 1989. D.J. Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince’s genial pop hit “Parents Just Don’t Understand” was the first hip-hop recording to win a Grammy (best rap performance). But they weren’t invited to perform on the show that year.

A year later, on Feb. 21, 1990, the duo became the first hip-hop act to perform on the Grammys. “We’d like to dedicate this performance to all the rappers last year that stood with us and helped us to earn the right to be on this stage tonight,” Will Smith said before he and D.J. Jazzy Jeff launched into “I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson.”

CBS, which has broadcast the Grammy telecast since 1973, aired another Grammy-branded special – A Grammy Salute to The Beach Boys – on April 9. That special was taped on Feb. 8 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

A Grammy Salute to 50 Years of Hip Hop airs Dec. 10 from 8:30-10:30 p.m. ET/8-10 p.m. PT on CBS. It streams on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with Showtime subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the special airs).

Chxrry22 Announces New ‘Siren’ EP Before Joining The Weeknd’s Australia/New Zealand Tour

Chxrry22 will release her new EP Siren on Oct. 27 via XO Records/Republic Records, she announced Friday (Oct. 13).

Ahead of Siren, she dropped the single “Never Had This,” featuring Vory, on Friday. “This song was already one of my favorites on the project, and Vory and I had already been talking about working together — this was the one that felt right for both of us,” the Canadian-Ethiopian singer said in a press release. “When people hear it, I want them to feel empowered to want to be valued and expect nothing but the best. This theme bleeds all throughout the project in an attempt to inspire people to exercise their power.”

Siren arrives a year after her seven-song debut EP The Other Side. Since then, she’s released a slew of singles, such as her cover of XO label boss The Weeknd‘s “Sacrifice,” “Worlds Away” and “More.”

Chxrry22 will be a supporting act on the Australia/New Zealand leg of The Weeknd’s After Hours Til Dawn Tour, which kicks off Nov. 20 at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium, with stops in Sydney (Accor Stadium, Nov. 24), Melbourne (Marvel Stadium, Dec. 1) and a final date at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand (Dec. 7).

“If you told me three years ago that my first tour would be in stadiums opening for the biggest artist in the world, I’d say you’re f—ing lying,” says Chxrry22. “Australia is such a special place and I can’t wait to feel their energy and perform for them.”
