City Girls Link Up With Kim Petras to Tease ‘Flashy’ New Song: Watch

The wait for City Girls’ new album is almost over, and this new snippet is sure to carry us through the home stretch. On Wednesday (Oct. 18), the “Act Up” rappers took to their official Instagram page to upload a video featuring a snippet of a new song.

“Flashy Ft. @KimPetras FRIDAY 10/20 ?✨? #RAW,” they captioned the video of them executing light choreography alongside Grammy-winning “Unholy” singer Kim Petras. “Stylin’, shinin’ / I’m so flawless like my diamonds / I’m flashy / Big bags, price tags / You know all I wear is name brands / I’m flashy,” coos Petras, before JT delivers some ad-libs to introduce her verse. Decked out in a whimsical color palette of pinks and greens — including a pair of Marc Jacobs Kiki boots for JT — City Girls’ aesthetic in the post perfectly complemented the sugary sweet pop melodies of their new track.

“Flashy” is the latest tease of new City Girls music ahead of the release of their third studio album, RAW, on Friday (Oct. 20). In a teaser video posted to their socials on Saturday (Oct. 14), the rappers described their upcoming album as “serious a–, freestylin’ cypher a– rap” and “scammin’, trickin’ p—y rap.”

RAW is the follow-up to 2020’s City On Lock, which spawned Billboard Hot 100 the singles “P—y Talk” (with Doja Cat) and “Jobs,” and became their highest-peaking entry on the Billboard 200 (No. 29). Since their last studio effort, the rap duo has put out several singles, including the Hot 100 hits “Twerkulator” (No. 51) and “Good Love” (No. 70, with Usher), as well as the 2023 releases, “I Need A Thug,” “Piñata,” “Face Down,” and “Act Bad” (with Diddy and Fabolous). In addition, both members put out solo singles. In 2021, Yung Miami made her solo debut with “Rap Freaks” — which peaked at No. 81 on the Hot 100 — and, this year, JT reached No. 25 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 with “No Bars.”

G Herbo & Southside Dragged On X Over “Disrespectful” Interview with Funny Marco

The internet is not very happy with rapper G Herbo and producer Southside after the duo made an appearance on YouTuber Funny Marco’s “Open Thoughts” podcast, which is supposed to be a lighthearted show that features humorous interviews with celebs and other influencers.

But most people, including the show’s host, thought last Sunday’s guests were disrespectful in the way they repeatedly told the popular podcaster to “Shut the f**k up” and called him “goofy,” that is, when they weren’t ignoring him completely.

On top of all that, footage that was edited out of the episode before it aired appeared to show Southside purposely damaging the host’s watch, which he said cost $30k.

“I understand a lot of y’all mad about the interview I was upset while it was going on but I understand I got a job to do & one thing about me I respect people on my show,” Marco told his fans who expressed their outrage at Herbo and Southside. “I didn’t want to match they…Energy it’s so many….L’s I took on my… Journey I wish I could show I don’t hide anything so I feel it was only right to put the episode out myself… and just learn from that episode & move on.”

“Thank (you) who support me, it’s a mindset thing,” he added.

Southside eventually posted a video to his Instagram page addressing the backlash (and also telling “grown men” to stop “DMing” him because he doesn’t want to address it.)

From Rap Up:

The Atlanta-based producer fired back on Instagram Live. “That n**ga wasn’t scared. If you were scared, I can’t help how your mama raised you. This is why I stay off this s**t because no matter what it is, n**gas make me the bad guy,” Southside asserted.

He further lambasted the podcast host for allegedly wearing a counterfeit timepiece. “Marco, I got a watch right now you can come get. I got a new watch for you, bro. Call me. I got something for you right now. And it’s real ’cause that s**t I threw wasn’t real. That watch was fake. It wasn’t a real watch. That s**t was fake as f**k,” the 808 Mafia co-founder said.

Despite the heated words, Southside also offered a somewhat backhanded apology. “If he was uncomfortable, it’s like, alright, damn, Marco. We’re sorry. [Me and G Herbo] didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable, but you’re a b**ch a** n**ga. Just stay away from me, bro,” he said.

But according to the fine folks on X, it’s actually Southside and his cohort, G Herbo, who are the “b**ch a** n**gas.”

Here are some of the reactions denouncing the disrespectful guests.

The Music Industry’s First North American Climate Action Summit Is Set: ‘Everybody’s Job Is a Climate Job’

With climate change having widespread effects across the music industry, a new conference will provide education and create action regarding what the music world can do to address the crisis.

The Music Sustainability Summit launches Feb. 5 in Los Angeles and is being produced by The Music Sustainability Alliance, an organization that provide science-based solutions, business case analyses, best practices, and tools for operational change across the industry.

The Summit is the first of its kind in North America.

Happening the day after the Grammy Awards, the event will be moderated by GreenBiz Group chairman and co-founder Joel Makower and feature members of MIT’s Environmental Solutions Initiative, climate change and food justice focused organization Support+Feed, industry environmental nonprofit REVERB, climate organization Planet Reimagined and global sustainability company ClimeCo. The Summit’s partner is Circular Unity, an organization focused on climate change as it relates to the entertainment industry.

The conference is intended to create alignment within the industry by bringing stakeholders on board to commit to climate action. The Summit will include the establishment of working groups meant to ensure that climate organizations are in the rooms with the key decision makers across the industry. Organizers hope that by the end of the day, those in attendance will have committed to the first steps in the industry’s collective action.

“There’s so much good work people are doing, but nobody knows about it,” says Music Sustainability Alliance co-founder and president Amy Morrison. “A goal of the conference, and what inspired it, is to help people to stop reinventing the wheel, to provide resources and get people talking and collaborating. This is a community. The power of all of this together is so much greater than individual actions.”

Hosted on the USC campus, the day-long conference will be structured into two parts, with morning programming focused on education and getting stakeholders on the same page and afternoon programming geared towards action about what the industry can do to mitigate its carbon footprint.

Along with panel discussions, a team from MIT will present a climate-focused map of the entire music industry, and the conference will provide educational materials so that even people just starting to learn about climate science will be able to follow along.

“We welcome all, the climate curious and the climate experts,” says Morrison. “There will be something for everybody.”

Tickets for the Summit are available on a sliding scale, between $25 and $200.

The Music Sustainability Alliance has already been busy bringing together stakeholders. A July organizing call had more than 30 representatives from businesses including UTA, CAA and WME, along with Sony Music, Universal Music Group and Warner Music, along with AEG and Live Nation and a number of managers and nonprofit organizations that work in the climate action space.

“It was really the first time ever all of these people had gotten on the phone together and been in a meeting to actually talk about sustainability,” says Morrison, who was the svp of marketing at Concerts West for more than two decades. “One of things that we find is really important to remember is that everybody’s job is a climate job, and there’s something that we can all do in our daily jobs.”

“It really is about working together and not working in these silos,” adds Music Sustainability Alliance director Eleanore Anderson. “It really is amazing working in these neutral parties and seeing everyone come together.”

Founded during the pandemic, the Music Sustainability Alliance is composed of music industry veterans, companies and scientists who are addressing innovation and sustainability converging in the music industry. The Alliance and the Summit both put a strong emphasis on data, research and science.

Georgia Deputy Kills Leonard Cure, Exonerated Black Man In Traffic Stop

A Black man exonerated after spending 16 years wrongfully convicted in prison in Florida was shot and killed by a deputy in Georgia.

According to reports, Leonard Cure was pulled over by a Camden County deputy in the state of Georgia on Monday (Oct. 16). The traffic stop took place on Interstate 95 at the Florida-Georgia state line. When asked by the deputy to step out of his vehicle, Cure was compliant but became angry when told he would be arrested. The deputy fired his taser after allegedly being assaulted by Cure.

That compelled the deputy to fire his taser again then use his baton, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The deputy would then fire his gun, shooting Cure as he continued to resist. GBI spokesperson Stacy Carson said that the unidentified deputy is white. The GBI has also begun investigating the incident as is customary in the state and confirmed that it would forward all data to the Brunswick Judicial Circuit that governs Camden County as well as the district attorney.

Cure, 53, had previously been wrongfully convicted for an armed robbery in Dania Beach, Florida, in 2003. He had been sentenced to life in prison due to previous criminal convictions. In 2020, the Conviction Review Unit of the Broward State Attorney asked a judge to set Cure free. The unit found “troubling” information detailing Cure’s solid alibis being ignored as well as no physical evidence tying him to the crime being present.

After an independent review board of five lawyers agreed with the unit’s report, Cure was released in April 2020 after getting his sentence modified. In December 2020, his conviction was vacated. “I’m looking forward to putting this situation behind me and moving on with my life,” he told the South Florida Sun Sentinel afterward. In June 2023, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill granting Cure $817,000 in financial compensation along with education credits. Cure had reportedly received the restitution in August.

Cure had been driving home to an Atlanta suburb after visiting his ill mother when detained, according to Innocence Project Florida executive president Seth Miller. Miller was one of the lawyers who worked to get Cure freed. “Lenny was a good soul, cared about people,” he said to reporters. “He was getting his life back together.”

Tyla’s ‘Water’ Hits No. 1 on U.S. Afrobeats Songs Chart – Stopping the 58-Week Run of Rema & Selena Gomez’s ‘Calm Down’

South African singer Tyla achieves a milestone week in her young career as “Water” climbs to No. 1 on Billboard’s U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart (dated Oct. 21). The track rises from No. 2 and halts the record 58-week monopoly of Rema and Selena Gomez’s “Calm Down,” which had led the list each week since Sept. 10, 2022.

The coronation also marks Tyla’s first No. 1 rank on any Billboard chart.

“Water,” released on FAX Records/Epic Records, takes over following gains in both streaming and sales, the two metrics that contribute to U.S. Afrobeats Songs. In the former category, “Water” surged to 8.3 million official U.S. streams in the Oct. 6-12 tracking week, a 29% swell compared to the previous week, according to Luminate. Sales, too, are up by a double-digit percentage, with 1,500 downloads sold in the U.S. in the same period, a 26% week-over-week improvement. Although the track was already posting gains, the arrival of its official music video on Oct. 6 sparked further momentum.

In addition to its streaming and sales rallies, “Water” is making a splash on U.S. radio. The single races 39-26 on the latest Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, up 64% in plays for the tracking week. Similarly, it rockets 47-29 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart thanks to 2.9 million in audience, up 91% from the prior week. On Rhythmic Airplay, “Water” debuts at No. 38 following a 127% gain in plays in the last week. The song is also nearing the threshold of the 40-position Pop Airplay list.

Thanks to the rising tide across all metrics, “Water” benefits on many multi-metric U.S. Billboard charts, most notably, on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100. There, despite the arrival of 22 Drake tracks from the superstar’s new album, For All the Dogs, which forced many songs to tumble on the list, “Water” is one of two exceptions (the other: Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season”) to improve in position, as it ascends 67-63 in its second week on the chart.

Bowen Yang Had No Clue Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce Were Going to Make ‘SNL’ Cameos

Fans are still reeling from Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce‘s surprise cameos on last weekend’s Saturday Night Live season 49 premiere. And apparently, so is the cast of SNL.

Cast member Bowen Yang confirmed that he wasn’t informed the world’s buzziest new pair was dropping by the show, much less planning on making small appearances on camera during the Saturday (Oct. 14) Pete Davidson-hosted program. When asked on the Las Culturistas podcast by his co-host Matt Rogers whether he was given a heads up about that night’s guests of honor, he said with disbelief: “No. They just came.”

“It was dress rehearsal, like great, that was fun,” he continued on the Wednesday (Oct. 18) episode. “I walk outside to go to my makeup chair, I see two people talking to two tall people. Tallest people in the world.”

“By the way, it’s one thing to see them individually,” added the Fire Island star. “I see them together and I go, ‘I’m in the Redwood Forest.’”

As Kelce himself recently confirmed, he and his new love interest had originally planned to attend SNL simply to show support for Swift’s friend and “Karma” collaborator, Ice Spice, who was that weekend’s musical guest. He was then asked if he wanted to participate in a skit already planned for the evening that just so happened to poke fun at the NFL’s coverage of his and Swift’s romance.

“I didn’t know what the skit was, like, which skits were coming up,” Kelce explained on his New Heights podcast. “I’m pretty sure it was just ironic they were doing a skit on Swiftmania. I thought it was hilarious when they asked me to be a part of it. I was like, ‘Man I’d be honored.’”

“I don’t even remember what I said — I blacked out,” he continued. “As soon as they cued to me, the entire place erupted, which was very overwhelming, and I’m not even sure if I said anything.”

Later, Swift also turned up onscreen to introduce one of Ice Spice’s performances. After the show wrapped, the pop star and Chiefs tight end were spotted arriving at the SNL afterparty together, holding hands.

Kid Cudi is set to add his creative talent to the Black comic book world with Moon Man, which HipHopDX describes as “a superhero saga being marketed as a contemporary reimagining of Miracleman.”

Over the weekend, the Cleveland rapper unveiled the project, which is set for release on Jan. 31, 2024, at New York Comic Con. For Moon Man, Kid Cudi, born Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi, teamed up with artist and director Kyle Higgins.

“I’ve been secretly workin on this for over a year and it’s finally happening,” the “Day ‘n’ Nite” rapper posted on Instagram. I’m so f*ckin hype for u all to dive in. If you’re into comics, my hope is that this will be your new obsession. Lot of love and hard work went into this, I am so proud to finally reveal my baby to the world.

Told y’all I was cookin up something special, in a world you’ve never seen me in,” he continued. “MAD SOLAR taken over mane!! Love to IMAGE Comics team for riding (with) me on this one and believing in my vision.”

Listen: In an industry that is still hurting for more Black writers and illustrators, witnessing the launch of a comic series by a prominent Black creative has to warm the hearts of blerds everywhere. But it’s not the only new move the “Cudi Zone” artist is making with fellow creatives.

From HipHopDX:

In more music adjacent news, Cudi teamed up with friend and longtime collaborator NIGO to create a new clothing line earlier this month.

In the beginning of October, the Cleveland rapper took to Instagram to announce WZRD CWBY, “a new brand by Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi, in collaboration with @nigo,” which he said would be “coming soon,” though no date was given.

He added that it was “Made in Tokyo,” though whether that was referring to the products themselves or the location of the brand’s headquarters is unclear.

This is Cudi’s second clothing line of 2023. He launched Members of the Rage this past summer at a department store in London. Billed as “90s grunge with the soul of hip hop and elements from a distant future,” Cudi originally planned to debut the line in Paris in 2022.

Recording artist, actor, comic book author, fashion designer—is there anything Kid Cudi doesn’t do, besides suffer the homophobic nonsense of fools

Salute!

NBA Superstar Joel Embiid Is Nearing A Sneaker Deal With… Skechers?

Just when it looked like the New York Knicks Julius Randle was going to be the face of Skechers basketball division, rumors are swirling that the NBA’s 2022-2023 MVP is about to ink a deal with the brand known for making mom and old people sneakers (no shots).

On Tuesday, (Oct. 18), NBA insider Shams Charania took to Twitter to reveal that Philadelphia 76ers superstar center Joel Embiid was close to walking away from Under Armour and inking a sneaker deal with Skechers just weeks after Julius Randle and Terrance Mann joined their growing basketball family. As to why Embiid would leave Under Armour for a brand that has even less popularity out on these playgrounds is anyone’s guess, but best believe it has something to do with the size of that bag that’s dangling on the other side of that contract.

According to The Athletic, the deal isn’t done just yet but Joel is already testing some Skechers while out on the hardwood floor.

The Athletic reports:

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid, the NBA’s reigning MVP, is nearing a deal to become Skechers’ star pitchman, industry sources briefed on the talks told The Athletic. A deal has not been signed yet, but Embiid wore a Skechers shoe for the first time during 76ers practice Wednesday with the brand’s performance staff on site as he begins to test out the sneaker, sources said. Embiid will begin wearing the new Skechers shoe in games once the deal is fully complete, according to a source.

Man, if Skechers can create a pair of sneakers that can keep Joel Embiid from re-injuring his knees, legs or back we’re all for it because that man stays missing games every year with some kind of injury.

Regardless of how we may feel or how Joel may get clowned on social media, the man is about his coin and if Skechers is offering a helluva payday for his services while providing him with some state of the art silhouettes that can support his 7′ 0″ and 280 pound frame, why not?

Go get them buckets in some mom sneakers, sir.

What do y’all think of Joel Embiid signing with Skechers? Let us know in the comments section below.
