Duran Duran Give Talking Heads’ ‘Psycho Killer’ a New Wave Chill on Spooky ‘Danse Macabre’ Cover

Your perfect Halloween soundtrack has just arrived courtesy of Duran Duran. The veteran new wave group dropped their delightfully devilish cover of the Talking Heads’ 1977 classic “Psycho Killer” on Tuesday (Oct. 24).

The song — which features bass from Måneskin’s Victoria De Angelis — appears on their upcoming 13-song Dance Macabre album, which features some spooky originals (“Nightboat,” “Black Moonlight,” “Love Voudou,” “Secret Oktober 31st,” “Confessions in the Afterlife”) alongside covers of songs by Billie Eilish (“Bury a Friend”), the Rolling Stones (“Paint It Black”), Siouxsie and the Banshees (“Spellbound”), The Specials (“Ghost Town”) and others.

The band make the song their own, thanks to bassist John Taylor’s funky, elastic bass lines, Andy Taylor’s quick-strum guitar and singer Simon Le Bon’s signature yearning — in this case somewhat haunted — vocals.

Speaking about the album in a press release, keyboardist Nick Rhodes said it “gathers together an unusual mix of cover versions, reworked Duran Duran songs and several new compositions. The idea was born out of a show we played in Las Vegas on October 31st, 2022. We had decided to seize the moment to create a unique, special event…the temptation of using glorious gothic visuals set to a dark soundtrack of horror and humor was simply irresistible.”

In a statement, De Angelis described the origins of her collaboration with the “Rio” legends. “I got a call from John [Taylor]…saying he was working on a cover of ‘Psycho Killer,’ and he wanted to ask me first about playing on it,” De Angelis said. “It was insane being asked by one of the greatest bass players ever to play one of my favorite songs with Duran Duran. Absolutely insane.”

Danse Macabre is out on Friday (Oct. 27).

“Mónaco” leads Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar’s tracks, storming in at No. 1 on the tally, which combines airplay, streaming and digital data. The song registered 26 million official U.S. streams on the week ending Oct. 19, according to Luminate. The eight-figure sum sparks a No. 2 start on the overall Streaming Songs and a No. 1 on Latin Streaming Songs charts, where Benito extends his No. 1 record, with 17.

Further, “Mónaco” unseats Drake’s “Gently” — on which Bad Bunny features — from the lead, sending it to No. 12 with 10.3 million U.S. streams, down 58%.

Sales also contribute to the song’s chart-topping start: “Mónaco” sold 1,000 downloads in its first week, enough for a No. 1 start on Latin Digital Song Sales. With a new No. 1 career entry there, Benito enters a tie with Shakira for the most No. 1s, both with 16.

As “Mónaco” debuts in the summit on Hot Latin Songs, the song gives the Puerto Rican his 14th career No. 1, breaking a tie with Shakira for the fourth-most champs and the most rulers among Latin rhythmic acts. Here’s the recap:

  • 27, Enrique Iglesias
  • 16, Luis Miguel
  • 15, Gloria Estefan
  • 14, Bad Bunny
  • 13, Shakira
  • 11, Marco Antonio Solis
  • 11, Ricky Martin

Rewriting Top 10 Record on Hot Latin Songs

In more Bad Bunny achievements, the complete top 10 on Hot Latin Songs is populated by Nadie Sabe songs. That sum adds a record-extending 87th top 10s to his account. As Bad Bunny further distances himself from his competition. Here’s a recap of the acts with the most top 10s on the 37-year-old survey:

  • 87, Bad Bunny
  • 39, Enrique Iglesias
  • 39, Luis Miguel
  • 37, Daddy Yankee
  • 35, J Balvin
  • 35, Shakira

Extends Hot Latin Songs Entry Record

As mentioned, all but one track of Nadie Sabe is now on Hot Latin Songs. The 11-second spoken word, non-music track “Europa :(” is the only other track billed on the album. With 19 new debuts, Bad Bunny claims 170 career entries on the multimetric list, further opening a bigger gap between his next competitor — Anuel AA with 113 entries.

The 100 Best Pop Songs Never to Hit the Hot 100: Staff List

You’ve read all about the 500 best pop songs that reached Billboard’s flagship songs chart — now check out the 100 best that never got there.

Last week at Billboard, we spent three days counting down the 500 best pop songs to ever hit the Billboard Hot 100, in honor of the chart’s 65th anniversary. And really, that’s just the tip of the iceberg: With well over 30,000 songs reaching the Hot 100 across its six and a half decades of existence, we could have easily gone another 500 deep — maybe even 5,000 deep — and still kept coming up with more beloved pop classics. That’s just how rich pop history since 1958 has been, and how thoroughly the Hot 100 has tracked its best and brightest songs over that timespan.

But what about the pop songs that never made the Hot 100? As comprehensive as the Hot 100 has been — and as thoroughly as our charts department has continued tinkering with its formula to keep it updated over the years, through countless evolutions in technology and consumption — inevitably, some great pop songs end up missing its rankings altogether. That’s what we’re cataloguing here: our staff picks for the 100 best songs to never chart on the Hot 100, all of which were released during the 65-year (and counting) lifespan of the listing.

Why did they miss? Well, we’ll get into the specific reasons for each entry below. But generally, some of them were too ahead of their time. Some of them were a little too late. Some of them made their impact just below the surface of the mainstream. Some of them wouldn’t make their biggest impact until decades after their release. Some of them were just a little too challenging — or a little too bawdy — for a true pop embrace. Some of them just weren’t what top 40 audiences wanted to hear at that time (or at least, not what top 40 programmers thought they wanted to hear). And some of them were simply never released as singles, despite being better-known today than a lot of songs by those artists that were.

Nonetheless, even though none of them leave a Hot 100 legacy like the songs on our top 500 list from last week, they’re all worth keeping company with those chart-enshrined pop classics. Here our 100 pop favorites from that group — the Long-Simmering 100, if you will — and be sure to check out the rest of last week’s all-time pop song content here.

“We are stepping out in grand fashion for our inaugural year, and I couldn’t be more excited about the stellar music lineup we have curated for next May. It’s ultimately meant to be representative of the many facets of country and Americana music because we like to think there is something for everyone at Big as Texas Fest,” Big as Texas’ co-executive producer and talent buyer Steve Said noted in a statement.

Beyond music, the festival will offer activities including custom car shows, equestrian exhibitions, art installation and camping.

Additionally, the festival aims to give back by focusing on raising awareness around mental health issues and suicide prevention. Festival organizers will invite local experts, doctors, therapists and more to join onsite in May. In addition to offering resources during the festival, organizers will donate 10 percent of net ticket proceeds from each individual ticket sold to 501 (c)(3) nonprofits that promote suicide prevention in Montgomery County and across Texas.

Taylor Swift Extends Artist 100 No. 1 Record, TOMORROW X TOGETHER & Offset Hit Top 10

Taylor Swift spends a record-extending 82nd week at No. 1 on the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated Oct. 28), thanks to nine albums on the Billboard 200 and three songs on the Billboard Hot 100, including her newly-crowned No. 1 song, “Cruel Summer.”

Leading Swift’s titles on the Billboard 200 is her 2019 set Lover at No. 8, with 52,000 equivalent album units earned Oct. 13-19, according to Luminate, followed by Midnights at No. 9. The latter spends a 52nd consecutive week in the top 10, encompassing its entire chart run. It becomes Swift’s second album to log its first full year in the top 10, after 1989, which spent its first 53 weeks in the region in 2014-15 (among 60 weeks in the top 10 total).

Here’s a recap of Swift’s current Billboard 200-charting albums.

Rank, Title:

  • No. 8, Lover
  • No. 9, Midnights
  • No. 14, Folklore
  • No. 18, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)
  • No. 19, 1989
  • No. 21, Reputation
  • No. 24, Red (Taylor’s Version)
  • No. 26, Evermore
  • No. 43, Fearless (Taylor’s Version)

On the Hot 100, “Cruel Summer” jumps from No. 9 to No. 1, becoming Swift’s landmark 10th leader. The coronation of the song – from Lover and promoted as a single this year – was helped by new mixes released during the latest tracking week, which also began with the Oct. 13 wide release of the concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour. Swift joins 10 other acts with double-digit No. 1s, and ties Janet Jackson and Stevie Wonder for the ninth-most in the list’s history.

She also becomes just the third act in history to earn at least 10 No. 1 songs on the Hot 100 and 10 No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200, after the Beatles and Drake.

Meanwhile, Swift’s former Hot 100 No. 1 “Anti-Hero,” at No. 25, has now spent 52 weeks, or a full year, on the chart, becoming her first song to reach the milestone. It reigned for a personal-best eight weeks.

TOMORROW X TOGETHER re-enters the Artist 100 at No. 2, thanks to its new album The Name Chapter: Freefall. The set arrives at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with 114,000 units, marking the act’s fourth top 10.

Plus, Offset re-enters the Artist 100 at No. 9 – marking his first week in the top 10 outside of Migos– powered by his new solo project, Set It Off. The album debuts at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 with 70,000 units, becoming his third solo top five set (apart from his output as a member of Migos). He also debuts two songs on the Hot 100: “Say My Grace” featuring Travis Scott (No. 48), and “Worth It” with Don Toliver (No. 92).

The Artist 100 measures artist activity across key metrics of music consumption, blending album and track sales, radio airplay and streaming to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.

DJ Envy & His Real Estate Legal Woes Gets Hilariously Dissected By Black Twitter

CulturePreneur - Brandon Medford Sales Academy Launch Event

DJ Envy is still a free man as of this moment but it appears that the long arm of the law will be closing in on him soon, that is if the allegations of fraud are true. The longtime radio host and entrepreneur is facing a mountain of claims that DJ Envy and Cesar Pina swindled prospective homeowners out of millions in botched real estate deals.

Earlier this month, we shared details of a News 4 NY I-Team report that dug into the nuts and bolts of the alleged real estate fraud claims that DJ Envy and Cesar Pina are facing. Often on his popular morning radio program, The Breakfast Club, Envy would mention the promotion of his real estate partnership with Pina.

Beyond The Breakfast Club, Envy and Pina hit the road for seminars and public appearances promoting methods for others to join in on their real estate hauls and get into flipping houses for profit.

Last week, Pina was arrested and facing charges of wire fraud in connection to the FlippingNJ business that he allegedly operated with Env. Pina pleaded not guilty to the charges and is now free on a $1 million bond. He is required to wear an ankle monitor and cannot leave the state of New Jersey.

Given the explosive nature of the claims and the celebrity status of DJ Envy, it didn’t take long for Black Twitter (yes, we’re still calling it that) to get into the mess with their takes and reactions. Of course, the jokes are all over the place with some even realizing that the writing was on the wall based on some of Envy’s online moves.

adidas Pauses Yeezy Drop Due To Israel-Hamas War: Report

adidas yeezy confirmed sale

Source: adidas / adidas

With the hundreds of millions of dollars that adidas garnered with the releases of Yeezy products over the summer, it was rumored that there would be another drop or two of remaining Yeezy sneakers before the end of 2023. But it seems like adidas has pulled the plug on those plans…for now.

Complex is reporting that the war that erupted between Israeli and Hamas in the past few weeks has pushed adidas to reverse course on their planned Yeezy drop as Kanye West’s antisemitic remarks (which led to his deal with adidas being terminated) this past year is still fresh on the minds of the Jewish community and Hip-Hoppers in general. An internal adidas memo that was shared with Complex confirmed the brand’s plan to hold back on the next wave of Yeezy sneakers.

Per Complex:

“As a brand we will not do a new drop for the remainder of the year both for our internal e-com and retail as well as wholesale,” Adidas’ message reads. “We will not be shipping out any new stock, this direction was given at the board level.”

The drop was set to include the “Bone,” “Onyx,” and “Zebra” colorways of the Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2. Adidas’ Yeezy 500 and 700 models were also included in the group.

An Adidas spokesperson declined to comment on the upcoming Yeezys for this story.

Interestingly enough, Kanye West has been mum on the war between Israel and Hamas, but truth be told, it’s probably for the best that he doesn’t opine on the matter. The last thing we need is more divisive, uninformed opinions on the matter from celebrities.

While the previous Yeezy Day drops didn’t garner the backlash many assumed it would and actually proved very lucrative for adidas, no one knows how people would react had the Three Stripes decided to move forward with its next release given the current political climate. With people in the U.S. and all over the world taking to the streets to protest the war between Israel and Hamas, adidas doesn’t want to take any chances that the brand would suffer any more negative publicity in this day and age of social media.

No word on when adidas will possibly move forward with its next Yeezy drop but best believe it will happen as sneakerheads and collectors are still gobbling up any and everything that’s branded Yeezy.

What do y’all think of adidas decision to pause any more Yeezy sneaker releases for the remainder of the year? Let us know in the comments section below.

Jason Kelce Is ‘Really Happy’ About Brother Travis’ Romance With Taylor Swift, But He Has Concerns

Jason Kelce is just like any other big brother: simultaneously supportive and protective of his younger sibling. In a recent interview, the Eagles offensive lineman opened up about his feelings regarding Travis Kelce‘s blooming romance with Taylor Swift, revealing he feels both happy and concerned for his baby bro.

“On one hand, I’m happy for my brother that he seems to be in a relationship that he’s excited about, that he is genuine about,” Jason told NBC Sports’ Peter King in a conversation published Monday (Oct. 23). “But there’s another end of it where it’s like, ‘Man, this is a lot.’”

The Philly star also touched on the media’s unrelenting obsession with Travis now that the Chiefs tight end is dating one of the biggest superstars in the world, be it the NFL‘s much criticized Swift-centric coverage or the now-constant paparazzi on Travis’ tail.

“There’s paparazzi talking about him fueling his car before the game today and I’m like, ‘Is that really necessary information to share?’” Jason continued. “This is another level of stardom that typically football players don’t deal with. And so on one hand, really, really happy for my brother and where he’s at in his current situation with Taylor, but on the other hand, there’s some, I think, alarms sometimes with how you know, over-in-pursuit people can be.”

“Overall, he can deal with some of this,” he added. “As long as it’s not, you know, becoming a threat to his safety and things like that.”

Jason’s comments come at the end of a week of “firsts” for Swift and the Kansas City player. The “Anti-Hero” singer and New Heights podcaster were photographed holding hands for the first time as they arrived at SNL afterparty for the season premiere Oct. 15; then, after Sunday’s (Oct. 22) Chiefs game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Swift is seen kissing the younger Kelce on the cheek in a photo shared by Chariah Gordon, who is dating Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman.

Jay-Z Explains Origin of ‘One-Take Hov’ Nickname: ‘I Didn’t Waste Time’

You already knew that Jay-Z doesn’t write down any of his rhymes. But in a preview of his upcoming two-part interview with Gayle King for CBS Mornings slated to air on Thursday and Friday (Oct. 26 and 27), the morning anchor takes a walk through the Brooklyn Public Library’s smash “Book of HOV” exhibit honoring the MC, where she discovers the origin story of Jigga’s famed “one-take HOV” nickname.

“This was when you were recording to actual tape. So, you can’t mess up, ‘cause then you got to go all the way back and cut the tape,” Jay explained as the pair stroll by a display of his master tapes. “That’s where the whole ‘One-Take HOV’ came from. Because if you wanted a fly chorus on this thing, you had to go to dinner. It took an engineer hours to cut the tape… fly it over here… So I start learning my lyrics really good so I could do them one time—you understand—straight down, and I didn’t waste time.”

On Monday, King teased another bit from the interview in which Jay finally settled a long-running social media debate that asks fans to choose between lunch with Jigga or a $500,000 check. “You’ve gotta take the money,” the rapper said, noting that his best fiscal wisdom in already in his work. “You’ve got all that in the music for $10.99… I wouldn’t tell you to cut a bad deal. Like, take the $500,000, go buy some albums, and listen to the albums,” he continued. “It’s all there. If you piece it together and really listen to the music for the words, well, what it is, it’s all there.”

The two-parter will feature a private tour of the library’s “Book of HOV” exhibit, which pays tribute to Jay’s sprawling career, from his Grammy-winning catalog to his landmark business deals in sports, music, alcohol, film and public service.

Check out a preview of the Jay-Z/King interview below.
