Every ‘From The Vault’ Song Ranked on Taylor Swift’s ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’: Critic’s Picks

The arrival of 1989 (Taylor’s Version) was always going to be a big deal: after all, her 2014 album was one of Taylor Swift’s critical and commercial high points, scoring three No. 1 hits on the Hot 100 and winning the album of the year Grammy after fully reinventing the country superstar as a pop icon. When 1989 was announced as the fourth of Swift’s six albums to receive the Taylor’s Version treatment, fans understandably turned giddy at the thought of Swift’s new takes on her old classics, plus the “From The Vault” goodies coming from that time of high-wattage, cinematic pop music.

And while 1989 (Taylor’s Version) is landing at a particularly busy time for Swifties — considering the fact that “Cruel Summer” sits atop the current Hot 100 after its months-long viral comeback, the Eras Tour concert film dominated the box office this month and wholesome content of Swift and Travis Kelce is darn near inescapable — the achievement that it represents should not be overlooked, even by the most casual of fans. Perhaps more than any Taylor’s Version release thus far, the re-recorded 1989 subtly tinkers with songs like “Blank Space,” “Welcome to New York,” “Out of the Woods” and “Clean” in compelling new ways, reanimating its gems from a fresh perspective and with a more seasoned pop voice.

Plus, the five “From The Vault” songs — all solo songs, the first time that the “Vault” tracks haven’t featured guest artists — supplement the album’s aesthetic, serving to further complete a vision that Swift had for the era. Some of them sound like surefire hits, and others sound destined to become fiercely beloved fan favorite; whichever lane they find, the “From The Vault” tracks demonstrate the continued power of 1989’s sound and texture, and deserve their day in the sun.

Although all five “From The Vault” songs are worthy new additions to Swift’s catalog, here is our preliminary ranking of the new goodies from Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version).

Last Week’s Turntable: WHY&HOW Promotes Three Company Veterans

Dave Grohl Will Totally Allow a ‘Boo Fighters’ Halloween Joke in ‘SNL’ Promo

Honestly, it’s the most obvious joke out there, so someone had to make it. In a new promo for this weekend’s Saturday Night Live stand-up comedian and first-time host Nate Bargatze is just trying to get through his introduction of himself and musical guest Foo Fighters when break-out featured player Marcello Hernández steps in to spice things up.

“Or should we say ‘Boo Fighters?’” adds Hernández, who had a killer moment during last week’s episode with double-threat Bad Bunny, in which he played a man trying to introduce his lady love to his overprotective Tia (Bunny) and mother (guest star Pedro Pascal).

“What?!” incredulous Foo Fighters singer/guitarist Dave Grohl screeches at the suggestion. “Because it’s Halloween, you know, like ‘Boo Fighters?,” Hernández responds sheepishly while trying to save the bit. “You know what man?…,” Grohl says, “That’s the best idea I’ve ever heard! as his bandmates smile in agreement.

In one of the other fresh promos, Hernández gets a bit ahead of himself by delivering excited comments in Spanish about being emotional during a week of multiculturalism where the cast can speak as much Spanish as English. “Sorry man, that was last week,” Bargatze, 44, breaks it to him. Things don’t get any better in the third video, where Hernández praises Bargatze’s stand-up prowess, but gets no love in return.

While Bargatze’s run-up to his first hosting gig has leaned into big “who is this guy?” energy, the Grammy-nominated veteran Nashville comic has five comedy albums to his name, as well as a number of streaming specials, including 2019’s The Tennessee Kid, 2021’s The Greatest Average and this year’s acclaimed Hello World. He’s also about to launch his “Be Funny” U.S. tour, which will hit theaters and arenas across the country from Nov. 1 through June 2024.

Kodak Black Agains Co-Signs Donald Trump In New Interview

Kodak Black is apparently still riding with former President Donald Trump, based on his remarks in a new interview.

Rapper Kodak Black was the latest guest on the Drink Champs podcast hosted by N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN, and his recent comments regarding former President Donald Trump took center stage during the interview. N.O.R.E. brought him up while referencing the pardon that Kodak Black got in December 2020. “Yeah, I f**k with that boy. We ain’t even gotta talk too much about the sh*t,” he replied.

The “Super Gremlin” rapper had been incarcerated after pleading guilty to a firearm possession charge in 2019 after falsifying records on federal forms to obtain those guns in Florida. Trump would grant him a pardon, commuting his sentence. “He a Gemini like me — his birthday two days after my s–t,” Kodak Black continued. “And that boy, like, he be vibin’ out here too.” When N.O.R.E. then brought up Trump’s current financial troubles due to the massive civil fraud lawsuit in New York brought against him and his removal from the Forbes 400 list of richest Americans, he asked if the 26-year-old would assist him with a million dollars. “Of course, n—a,” he replied.

Kodak Black, also known as Bill Kahan Kapri, has been a consistently vocal supporter of the twice-impeached former president. After being released from prison in January 2021, the rapper dropped a new track called “Last Day In”, giving Trump a shoutout. “Trump just freed me, but my favorite president is on the money/ All they hatin’ presidents has become evident to me.”

In an Instagram Live from earlier this year, he lauded Trump with praise when comparing him to other Republican candidates for President. “I feel like these people on some other sh*t,” Kodak said. “So they know like, they gon’ try to get Trump out the way ’cause Trump a stand-up ni**a, he a real ni**a. He’ll let a bi**h do anything… Trump a real ni**a, man, a soldier.”

MA$E Insightfully Reacts To Dwight Howard Scandal, Cam’ron Left In Tears

Dwight Howard’s recent legal issues are a trending topic. MA$E had time to address the former NBA star and the allegations he is facing and it was pure comedy.

HipHopDX is reporting that the most recent episode of the viral sports commentary show It Is What It Is addressed Dwight Howard’s recent admission to courting another man. In 2021 the National Basketball League star was accused by Stephen Harper of sexual assault. The victim claims he met Howard online and the two then decided to meet in person. They finally did but it is alleged that Dwight invited a transgender individual named “Kitty” to Harper’s surprise.

Radar Online obtained the lawsuit documentation; it reads that Howard “grabbed Mr. Harper by the thighs, forcibly removed Mr. Harper’s underwear, held Mr. Harper down, and performed nonconsensual oral sex on Mr. Harper”. The filing also states “Mr. Harper was in fear of imminent bodily harm when he was pinned down and forced to remain in place while Defendant continued to sexually assault him.”

Around the 43-minute mark MA$E discusses the situation; the result is one of the most memorable comedic moments of the show’s history. “We got to stop telling people, ‘I don’t care what you do on your own time.’ Because we do care… And women, you got to stop. We got to stop telling n****s, ‘What you do in your own personal time has nothing to do with me.’ It does matter. Those are the lies that are going on in society,” he said.

The Harlem native went on to further explain his stance. “People will say, ‘It don’t matter.’ But as soon as they find out, it matters. So they outing them. When it comes down to making money off the story, it matters” he added. “When it comes down to who dating you it’s gonna matter. When it comes down to if you’re gonna be in the locker room with them, it matters. Because there’s about 30 teams who didn’t sign Dwight Howard because it matters.” As expected his co-hosts found the talk track hilarious resulting in Cam’ron and Stat Baby holding back their laughs. You can see MA$E discuss the situation below.

Sam Asghari Says Britney Spears’ High Praise for Him in ‘The Woman in Me’ Memoir ‘Made Me Smile’

It seems safe to assume that not everyone mentioned in Britney SpearsThe Woman in Me memoir is going to rush out to check the index for their name. But one person who seems pleased with how they are portrayed in the tell-all memoir from the pop princess is her ex-husband Sam Asghari.

TMZ talked to the model/actor this week following the book’s release and he was reportedly elated, telling the gossip outlet that he was “freaking proud” of his former wife for putting her life on display in the book, saying, “That made me smile, to be honest… I hope she takes over the world.”

He had reason to feel good based on an excerpt from the book published by People, in which Spears wrote that she has “an appreciation for how stable he is,” noting that she also loves that Asghari “doesn’t drink. He’s a gift from God.” Asghari, 29, filed for divorce from Spears in August after 14 months of marriage. With the book dropping two months after the divorce filing, the end of the couple’s marriage is not covered in the book that takes readers from Spears’ early career as a child actress/singer through the restrictive 13-year conservatorship that she was freed from in November 2021.

Britney also had nice words for Asghari for helping her dial up the courage to fight for her freedom from the conservatorship, writing “I look up to him — his consistency with working out and being a good man and being healthy and taking care of me and helping me learn we can take care of each other.

The Woman in Me also takes on the singer’s 55-hour marriage to childhood friend Jason Alexander — Spears said she was “just honestly very drunk” during the impromptu Vegas nuptials — and her fling with actor Colin Farrell. Of the latter, she wrote, “We wound up having a two-week brawl … Brawl is the only word for it — we were all over each other, grappling so passionately it was like we were in a street fight.”

It also tackles her romance with Justin Timberlake, which lasted from 1999-2002, until JT allegedly called it quits via a break-up text. She said the breakup left her “devastated… I could barely speak for months,” coming as it did after she said she got an abortion because Timberlake wasn’t ready for fatherhood; she also admitted to cheating on Justin with choreographer Wade Robson in the book after finding out about the “Cry Me a River” singer’s alleged affairs with other women.

In an Instagram post on Thursday — the day of the book’s release — Spears posted on Instagram about the memoir’s success and thanked her fans for their support. She said it was already “the highest selling celebrity memoir in history” on its first day on shelves. “And it’s only day 1 !!!” she added. “Thank you to the fans who have been so supportive !!! Love you all ? !!!” According to Amazon.comThe Woman in Me is the No. 1 on its list of most read and sold non-fiction books.

GOP House Members Yell “Shut Up” & Shout Down Black Reporter

WASHINGTON - OCTOBER 24: House Speaker nominee Rep. Mike Johnso

A Black reporter who asked Republican House of Representatives members about their new speaker with an extremist past was told to “shut up” and booed.

On Tuesday night, the continued chaos over the role of speaker in the House of Representatives seemed to end when Mike Johnson of Louisiana was elected to be their nominee. At a press conference to announce the news, Johnson was surrounded by gleeful GOP members when ABC News reporter Rachel Scott (who is Black) posed a question. “Mr. Johnson, you helped lead the efforts to overturn the 2020 election results,” Scott began. “Do you stand by —”

Scott was then interrupted by those assembled around Johnson, who began to boo her. GOP Representative  Lauren Boebert of Colorado said “oh God” as others yelled out “Go away!” Rep. Virginia Foxx of North Carolina, standing off to the left of the podium, then loudly yelled, “Shut up! Shut up!” Johnson, who is also the Vice Conference Chair, smiled and said, “Next question.” The entire exchange, caught on video by C-SPAN, soon went viral. Fervent Donald Trump supporter Johnson took over as Majority Speaker on Wednesday, ending a turbulent three-week period that saw Rep. Kevin McCarthy ousted and Representatives Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Jim Jordan of Ohio be denied the job, with Tom Emmer of Minnesota dropping his bid after a few hours.

Rep. Foxx has been notorious for her brusque behavior towards members of the press in the past, particularly when it comes to the members-only elevators in the Capitol buildings. Two days earlier, she yelled at reporters to “get away from the damned elevator” in response to them being gathered by an elevator seeking comment from the GOP Representative Byron Donalds of Florida.

The moment has now become an ad for a group created to combat MAGA politicians based in New York who supported the extremist Johnson for the role. “ He has no business being Speaker… His extreme agenda – from a national abortion ban to cuts to Social Security – will impact millions of New Yorkers, which is why it is absolutely imperative we come together and raise the alarm bell on this new MAGA Speaker and his divisive and deeply unpopular record,” said  Courage For America spokesperson José Morales, Jr. The ad is now airing in parts of upstate New York.

Jack Black Stripped To His Tighty Whities For Charity Cover of Taylor Swift’s ‘Anti-Hero’

Jack Black never met a shirt he couldn’t shed. The Tenacious D frontman and comedic whirlwind was bare-chested again on Wednesday night (Oct. 25), but this time it was for a good cause. Black stripped down to his colorful boxers (and matching socks) during the all-star Give Back-ular Spectacular fundraiser at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles to raise money for SAG-AFTRA members affected by the actors strike, which has now dragged on for more than 100 days.

After doing some light crowd work — Black asked a guy up front where he was from and he said “L.A.” — the comedian asked the crowd what they wanted to hear. Rejecting the first suggestion (“can’t do that one, we’re in a strike”), Black seemed to cotton to a second one. “I know that one! Everyone knows that f—ing song!”

Black then ripped into Taylor Swift‘s “Anti-Hero,” tip-toeing and high-kicking his way through the “It’s me, hi, I’m the problem it’s me” chorus, before digging into, well, a series of nonsense scatty phrases because he clearly didn’t know any of the other lyrics.

The event to raise money for an emergency relief fund for union and non-union members in Hollywood affected by the ongoing strike was also slated to feature appearances from Jason Alexander, Rachel Bloom, Bryan Cranston, Lil Dicky, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, Dax Shepard, Lily Tomlin and The Bear star Jeremy Allen White, among others.

Weeks after Hollywood writers reached an agreement with the studios, representatives for the actors were said to be cautiously optimistic about revived talks on Friday (Oct. 27) between the actors guild and studios.

Niall Horan Shares ‘You Could Start A Cult’ With Lizzy McAlpine, Sets ‘The Show: The Encore’

Niall Horan must be feeling pretty good about himself right now.

When the members of One Direction inevitably splintered off in their own directions, the Irishman, like his former bandmates, embarked on a solo career. He’s now three albums in, with three consecutive No. 1s on Billboard’s Top Album Sales, and three top 10s on the all-genres Billboard 200 chart, including a No. 1 for his 2017 debut solo effort Flicker.

He’s gone one better in the U.K., where his sophomore album Heartbreak Weather (from 2020) and his third and most recent LP, 2023’s The Show, both spent time at No. 1.

For the cherry on top, Horan stepped into a full-time coach’s role on season 23 of NBC’s The Voice, and immediately walked away a winner, thanks to 19-year-old contestant Gina Miles.

The luck of the Irish, perhaps.

Horan has more where that came from. After The Show, the Encore: a deluxe edition featuring nine bonus tracks. Slated for release Nov. 3 via Capitol Records, the expanded version of The Show includes a collaboration with “Ceilings” singer Lizzy McAlpine on a new version of “You Could Start A Cult,” which dropped at the stroke of midnight.

When the full package arrives, expect a collaboration with rival The Voice coach John Legend on a reimagined version of the title track, plus live recordings from the Electric Picnic festival and Spotify Studios, along with alternate versions of “Meltdown” and “On A Night Like Tonight” from Horan’s Vevo Extended Play session.

Vinyl and CD editions will follow on April 5, 2024, and a 2-LP vinyl edition of The Show: The Encore, which includes a 72-page hardcover 12” x 12” book, is available to pre-order at his official website.

There’ll be more Horan to go around next year, when the pop singer embarks on an international tour in support of his third LP, playing more than 80 dates, including two shows at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Before that, he’ll perform at 93.3 FLZ Jingle Ball – Tampa (Nov. 26) and 102.7 KIIS FM Jingle Ball – Los Angeles (Dec. 1).
