E-40 Talks New Cookbook ‘Goon With a Spoon’ & How He Missed Out on Working With Nipsey Hussle

E-40 has been enjoying a fistful of wins on hip-hop’s 50th birthday. Not only has he visited the White House, including a recent trip this week to see President Biden, but he’s also had a street renamed after him and released his newest cookbook, Goon With the Spoon, with his West Coast brethren Snoop Dogg.

“It’s always good to have additional revenue streams,” 40 told Billboard as he also boasts a spirit line titled Earl Stevens Selection and his multi-flavored ice brand Goon With a Spoon. “You want your checks here and there. You want your wire deposits here. You wanna make money from all over the place. You gotta have octopus arms in this game. That’s one thing about me: I’ve always been in that mold. From selling tapes out of the car, I’ve been an entreprenaire. It’s entrepreneur and millionaire all in one.”

Despite his various wins across the business sector, 40’s passion for hip-hop remains sky-high, as proven by the release of his new album Rule of Thumb, Rule 1. The project is the first of a two-part release, with the second offering dropping in 2024. The first collection includes features from Gucci Mane, Larry June, Too Short and YoungBoy Never Broke Again.

“He’s an old soul,” 40 says of YoungBoy, who is featured on “Get My Life Right.” “He’s been there before. That’s a deep, young man. I always liked him. Birdman hit me one day and was like, ‘Hey, YoungBoy wants you on one of his songs.’ He sent it to me, we connected, and I knocked out one for his album.”

40 also spoke on his friendship with the late Nipsey Hussle and how he was initially supposed to on the Victory Lap standout “Grinding All My Life.” “He didn’t tell me when he needed it back. Next thing you know, I was like, ‘Oh man. This one of them ones too.’ Sometimes I’ll say, ‘When you need it back?’ We didn’t even discuss it. He just sent it. Next thing you know, he put a ticket to the face. I was like, ‘Damn.’ But, man, I miss Nipsey. He was really a good dude. He always showed me respect. He really patterned his hustle after mine. I really miss him and I think he would have really made an impact in rap right now if he was still living.”

Lainey Wilson Makes Her Late-Night TV Debut in a Custom Cowboy Hat: Shop the Look

All products and services featured are independently chosen by editors. However, Billboard may receive a commission on orders placed through its retail links, and the retailer may receive certain auditable data for accounting purposes.

Lainey Wilson loves her cowboys hats, so it’s only right that she chose a special hat for her late-night TV debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday (Dec. 12).

The country star stayed true to her Western style in a custom, bespoke Silverbelly Gus Hat from the Western-wear brand Kemo Sabe. Wilson, who paired the hat with a fuzzy, fringe coat and snakeskin bell bottoms, performed “Wildflowers and Wild Horses,” the latest single from her Bell Bottom Country album.

Although Wilson’s one-of-a-kind hat isn’t available at Kemo Sabe, the brand offers similar looks such as Silverbelly Bever Hat ($895) and Silverbelly Rabit Hat ($495). The hats are available in a flat brim design or the cowboy curled brim like the one that Wilson wore on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

The country star has become known for her signature head gear. “When it comes to dressing Lainey, I know there’s two important boxes to always check: bell bottoms and a statement hat. It’s fun to riff off the signature style she has created,” her stylist, Cherie Kilchrist, told US Weekly last month of dressing Wilson for the 2023 CMA Awards. Wilson wore a black Carolina Herrera bell bottom bodysuit and a cowboy hat from Charlie Horse 1.

Wilson has had a busy year. The singer released her latest Stanley collaboration, the “Country Gold” Quencher, last month and launched a partnership with Wrangler in August to debut the brand’s fall/winter 2023 collection.

On the music side of things, Wilson will perform in Las Vegas on Dec. 15 and 16. Click here to buy tickets to see her in Vegas and other performances including the 2024 Rib Round Up.

Paris Hilton Stars as a Powerful Label Executive in Jason Derulo & Meghan Trainor’s ‘Hands on Me’ Video: Watch

The video kicks off with Derulo making an impassioned plea to the suited “Stars Are Blind” singer about putting unique spins on beloved classics, some of which include his and Trainor’s own material.

“Picture this — Hollywood goes country. From billy trucks to tractor trucks. From “All About That Bass” to mud on your face, from “Wiggle Wiggle” to stroking my fiddle. Form “It girl, to s–t girl,” he tells Hilton, who replied, “Remakes are huge right now. Okay Jason, let’s see it.”

The video then enters a sitcom like format, with Derulo and Trainor having to adjust to life on a farm. Derulo quickly becomes smitten with the next door neighbor, who invites him in to unclog her toilet which is so filthy, it causes him to vomit. On the other side of the fence, Trainor gets up to more glamorous activities and applies makeup to her face while watching Derulo milk a cow, and takes her mini tractor — which she later crashed into a tree — out for a daytime spin.

“So, baby, put your hands (Hands) on me (On me)/ Both your hands (Hands) on me (On me)/ Right now (Right now), you’re the only (You’re the only) one I need,” the duo sings, a nod to Ben E. King’s 1961 classic “Stand By Me.”

The video ends up being a hit with Hilton in the end — she gives the visual a thumbs up with not one, but two of her signature catchphrases: “Loves it. That’s hot.”

Cher Notches First Pop Airplay Chart Hit Since 2002 With ‘DJ Play a Christmas Song’

Cher returns to Billboard’s Pop Airplay chart for the first time since 2002, as “DJ Play a Christmas Song” debuts at No. 40 on the survey dated Dec. 23.

The single gained by 10% in plays in the Dec. 8-14 tracking week, according to Luminate. Among top major-market supporters of the song are iHeartMedia’s WHTZ New York, KIIS Los Angeles and KYLD San Francisco.

The legendary singer last appeared on the chart, which began in 1992 and ranks weekly plays on over 150 mainstream top 40 radio stations, in March 2002 with “Song for the Lonely,” which reached No. 38. She tallied two prior entries, both in 1999: “Strong Enough” (No. 31) and her pop-culture juggernaut “Believe” (No. 2).

Cher ends a break of 21 years, nine months and three weeks between Pop Airplay hits. Two years ago, Elton John returned after an even longer wait between charted titles at the format: 23 years, seven months and one week, between “Something About the Way You Look Tonight” in 1998 and the debut of “Cold Heart (Pnau Remix),” with Dua Lipa.

Meanwhile, “DJ Play a Christmas Song” spends a third week at No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. It became Cher’s first leader on the list since “If I Could Turn Back Time,” which led for a week in September 1989, as she ended the longest gap between No. 1s in the chart’s 62-year history: 34 years, two months and one week (surpassing John’s absence of 23 years, 11 months between “Something About the Way You Look Tonight” and his own modern holiday hit, “Merry Christmas,” with Ed Sheeran, two Yuletide seasons ago).

“DJ Play a Christmas Song” has also topped the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales and Holiday Digital Song Sales charts, as Cher has now claimed visits to No. 1 on Billboard song surveys in every decade since the 1960s, including her run as half of Sonny & Cher.

The carol is from Cher’s first holiday LP, Christmas, which jingled in at No. 1 on the Nov. 4-dated Top Holiday Albums chart.

All charts dated Dec. 23 will update on Billboard.com Tuesday, Dec. 19.

You know you’ve made it in life when you’re blessed with the keys to your city, and Metro Boomin has just been bestowed that honor by St. Louis’ Mayor Tishaura O. Jones.

According to TMZ, the popular producer received the keys to his hometown city of St. Louis, Thursday (Dec. 14). But Metro Boomin didn’t receive the honor for the illustrious work he’s put into the music game, but for the efforts he’s put into bettering the lives of single mothers in his city via his “Single Moms Are The Real Superheroes” campaign.

If only more rappers and entertainers would take such an initiative to celebrate homegrown heroes like this.

TMZ reports:

This year marks Metro’s 7th “Single Moms Are The Real Superheroes” campaign and we’re told the annual event is now being reimagined as “Leslie Joanne Single Mothers And Caregivers Appreciate Day” to honor his late mother, who died in 2022.

Little did he know, the city also had a gift for him — December 14 will officially be “Leland ‘Metro Boomin’ Wayne Day” going forward.

Rankings for the Top TV Songs chart are based on song and show data provided by Tunefind and ranked using a formula blending that data with sales and streaming information tracked by Luminate during the corresponding period of November 2023.

“Lovely” appears in the Nov. 3 episode of Goosebumps, the first-year series that is an adaptation of RL Stine’s long-running children’s book series of the same name. After premiering Oct. 13 with its first five episodes, the series premiered one episode a week through its season finale on Nov. 17.

The song earned 17.5 million official on-demand U.S. streams and 1,000 downloads in November 2023, according to Luminate. The song peaked at No. 64 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 2019, Eilish’s first song to chart there.

It’s the second time “Lovely” has led Top TV Songs, following the May 2018 tally, when the track reigned after a synch in Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why.

“Lovely” and Goosebumps reign over a pair of songs from Netflix’s Virgin River, the second part of the fifth season of which premiered Nov. 30. Both are holiday-themed songs; Michael Bublé‘s “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” leads the group at No. 2 (30.5 million streams, 3,000 downloads), while Stevie Wonder’s “What Christmas Means to Me” (No. 5; 9.5 million streams, 2,000 downloads) also appears.

Both Fargo and A Murder at the End of the World also boast a pair of entries each.

After a Hot 2023, Touring Business Eyes More Growth

The concert business has had a record year in 2023 — tours by Taylor Swift and Beyoncé were pop culture moments, festivals roared back to life and consumers’ splurging on tickets seemed to defy gravity. There’s likely more good news on the horizon, too. By all forecasts, next year is shaping up for continued success, even as consumers still feel pinched by inflation.

Among the big names to announce stadium tours next year are The Rolling Stones, Foo Fighters, Green Day and a pairing of Journey and Def Leppard. Chris Stapleton, Zach Bryan and Luke Combs will hit both stadiums and arenas. Drake, Bad Bunny, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Hootie & the Blowfish, New Kids on the Block, Alanis Morissette and The Trilogy Tour featuring Enrique Iglesias, Ricky Martin and Pitbull will play arenas and amphitheaters. Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour continues in 2024, too, with 85 shows announced for Asia, Australia and North America.

Advanced ticket sales suggest consumers remain eager to see their favorite artists perform live. Through mid-October, Live Nation’s event-related deferred revenue — from ticket sales to events that had not yet occurred — was up 39% year over year, according to the company’s third-quarter earnings release.

AEG Presents, the second-largest promoter, is “feeling really positive” about 2024 tours across all venue sizes and genres, says Rich Schaefer, president of global touring. “I think people are discovering new artists and want to see big shows — and they’re willing to pay for it.” They’re buying well in advance, too: AEG put tickets on sale for 76 Zach Bryan shows in 2024 — some won’t happen until December — and has “largely sold everything out,” says Schaeffer. “That artist especially has a crazy connection with his fans. They’ve seen videos of what his shows are like, and I think everybody wants to experience it.”

Those big tours — and thousands of others — are counting on consumers to continue to open their wallets despite continued high prices for staples and living expenses, rising debt delinquencies and Americans’ credit card debt reaching a record level in the third quarter. The holidays are presenting mixed signals: Black Friday spending was up 2.5% compared to 2022, but numerous surveys have found consumers plan to spend less on gifts this year.

Consumers may feel beleaguered, but they continue to spend to see their favorite artists perform live. “I have weekly booking calls with the over 40 presidents around the world and we talk booking clubs up to stadiums and festivals, and we have not seen anything taper off in any sense,” said Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino during the company’s Nov. 2 earnings call. The company is “not seeing any pullback in any way” in consumer demand regardless of the region or venue size, he added.

A big question, though, is whether consumers will be in a spending mood throughout 2024. A new Goldman Sachs economic outlook report says the U.S. economy today is better than was expected a year ago, inflation will continue to subside and the likelihood of a recession in 2024 is “limited.” The latest data from the University of Michigan is encouraging: U.S. consumer sentiment soared in December and people’s expectations for year-ahead inflation dropped to 3.1% from 4.5% last month.

Whatever uncertainties exist — including falling savings rates and weakening credit conditions — have not materialized in ticket sales thus far. “We certainly see the headlines [about macroeconomic conditions], but it’s not flowing through to numbers that we can see,” Lawrence Fey, CFO of secondary ticket marketplace Vivid Seats, said during a Nov. 7 earnings call.

One could simply look at who’s touring in 2024 to get a sense of where ticket buyers are thinking. “You got The Stones going on the road in parts in North America,” says Doug Arthur of Huber Research Partners. “They’re always a pretty big draw. The Stones are pretty savvy historically about touring when they think the economics support it.”

Consumers’ willingness to spend increasing amounts on live music isn’t a new trend — although some of 2023’s record-setting box office numbers appear to be the result of music fans may be clamoring for live events in after suffering through pandemic-era restrictions. The concert industry has benefited from a lasting shift among consumers from goods to experiences over the last 10 to 15 years, says Brandon Ross, an analyst with LightShed Partners.

This year’s boffo box office numbers weren’t outliers, and Ross expects to see “outsized performance on a global basis” in 2024. “There has been a year-and-a-half long concern for a broader pullback in consumer spending,” says Ross. “I don’t think will not impact growth, but I think there’s substantial tailwind supporting this industry.”

Those tailwinds probably won’t be strong enough for next year’s touring business to duplicate 2023’s stellar growth rate — but no one seems to be expecting that. “I don’t think you’re talking about another up 30% type of year, and I don’t think [Live Nation is] talking about that either,” says Arthur. “But can the concert revenues be up high single digits between volume, fans per show, price per ticket and spending per fan? Yeah, I think that’s not unreasonable at all.”

Artists and promoters will continue to encounter high costs in 2024 — labor, catering, buses and staging are stretched thin with a high number of big tours on the road. That’ll continue to push ticket prices up. Even so, AEG hasn’t seen resistance to higher prices, says Schaefer. “There’s very few instances where we think that pricing is responsible for tickets not selling.”
