Finneas Says Billie Eilish’s Next Album Is ’85 Percent Done’

Fear not, Billie Eilish fans — the pop star’s next record is close to completion. Eilish’s brother and right hand producer Finneas spoke with Mr Porter in a Tuesday (Dec. 19) interview and revealed that his sister’s next album is “85 percent done.”

While the percentage offers a concrete update for fans, Finneas noted that the process of creating the album was not an easy one. “I don’t think Billie was particularly sure about how she actually felt about the things we were trying to write about,” he explained. “Making a thing that you feel really connected to – it can really evade you.”

Finneas, who works with Eilish often on songwriting, additionally shared that mapping out the time between his own busy schedule for writing was difficult as he performed 88 shows in a year’s time: “I think I got a little rusty. And that was scary. It was discouraging to realize that if I take time off, my songwriting muscle atrophies. I had to get back in shape.”

Eilish’s last album, Happier Than Ever, arrived in 2021 — the set, which marked her sophomore release, crowned the Billboard 200 for three weeks and has spent a total of 124 weeks on the all genre tally. In the time since, Eilish and Finneas worked together on “What Was I Made For?” as part of Barbie: The Album; the track is up for a total of six Grammys ahead of the 66th annual Grammy Awards, including the song and record of the year categories.

Hipgnosis Songs Fund Appoints New Auditor

Just one day after announcing a delay in publishing interim financial results for the six months ended Sept. 30, Hipgnosis Songs Fund has announced the appointment of a new auditor.

In a press release on Wednesday (Dec. 20), the Merck Mercuriadis-led company said it had appointed KPMG Channel Islands Limited as its new auditor, “with immediate effect for the financial year ended” Mar. 31, 2024. KPMG succeeds PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in the role.

The release notes that the appointment of KPMG will be subject to approval by the company’s shareholders at a general meeting “to be convened in due course.”

“The previous auditor, PwC CI, has deposited with the Company a statement confirming that there are no matters to be brought to the attention of the Company’s members or creditors,” the release adds.

On Tuesday, Hipgnosis Songs Fund said it would delay publishing its financial results over concerns about its valuation, explaining that the valuation it received from an independent firm was “materially higher than the valuation implied by proposed and recent transactions in the sector.” These transactions include the proposed $417.5 million sale of 29 catalogs to Blackstone-backed Hipgnosis Songs Capital — a price reflecting a 24.3% discount from a valuation dated March 31 — and last week’s sale of 20,000 “non-core songs” to an undisclosed buyer for $23.1 million, which the company said reflects a 14.2% discount on the songs’ valuation as of early fall.

Hipgnosis Songs Fund now expects to announce its financial results on New Year’s Eve, according to the regulatory filing.

Hipgnosis is composed of three companies: Hipgnosis Song Management, Hipgnosis Songs Capital and Hipgnosis Songs Fund, the latter of which has been the subject of controversy for months. On Oct. 16, the London-listed trust revealed that it would not pay its investors a dividend due to new, lower revenue projections. On Oct. 26, more than 80% of the fund’s investors demanded structural changes to the music rights company, voting in favor of the board drawing up “proposals for the reconstruction, reorganization or winding-up of the company to shareholders for their approval within six months.”

Last month, it was also announced that the fund will not declare dividends before the fiscal year, which begins in April, to ensure it has enough on its ledger to pay contractually mandated catalog bonuses.

Hipgnosis Songs Fund owns full or partial rights to the song catalogs of artists including Justin Bieber, Neil Young, Bruno Mars, Jimmy Iovine, 50 Cent, Shakira, Blondie, Justin Timberlake and Lindsey Buckingham.

Hipgnosis Songs Fund ended the day up 1.43% on the London Stock Exchange following the announcement of the new auditor.

RBD Closes its Soy Rebelde Reunion Tour in Mexico City: ‘We’ll See What Destiny has in Store for Us’

RBD will end a long-awaited reunion that took 15 years to come to fruition on Thursday (Dec. 21), a tour that took the famous Mexican pop group through stadiums and arenas in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and the United States for more than 50 dates. The Soy Rebelde Tour was a successful journey that surprised everyone, including its members, who never imagined what their music represented for millions of people.

“It’s beautiful,” band member Maite Perroni tells Billboard Español. “Now we see children who get excited and sing, who are the children of our fans. They make their parents come to the concerts because they want to be part of that history.”

The end of this cycle for Anahí, Dulce María, Christian Chávez, Maite Perroni and Christopher von Uckermann — which began in August in El Paso, Texas — will be at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, a forum for over 80,000 people that has welcomed icons such as Vicente Fernández, Madonna and U2. Previously, RBD filled the Foro Sol for six nights starting November 30, attracting a total of 390,000 fans, according to promoter Ocesa.

While the Soy Rebelde Tour, produced by Live Nation and T6H Entertainment, became the second most lucrative tour by any Latin artist in 2023 (only behind Karol G’s Mañana Será Bonito,) the impact generated by the reunion of RBD and its fans is huge at a time when reggaeton and regional Mexican music dominate the streaming platforms.

Five (of six) returning members sat down together in an exclusive cover interview with Billboard Español shortly before hitting the road, and Perroni recounts what returning to the stage with her colleagues has meant for her and the group.

What assessment do you make of this long-awaited RBD reunion? What has been the most surprising thing about it all?

It has been very nice to meet again with so many people who have been part of our history for so many years now, 20 years, which is easy to say, but there’s a lot of loyalty, love, affection. It has been a great surprise to meet new generations — is no longer just one generation, it’s three generations! All of this has made me come to the conclusion that RBD is that powerful, loving, positive energy that moves the project. We have simply become the vocalists, the representatives of what this group is, but the truth is that the magnitude, the strength, the power, the energy, the love, the dedication, have been given to us by the audience. And we realize that RBD is today and always.

What has been the main achievement of this reunion?

That we managed to make history! That is something that was questioned in the past because RBD is a project that came out of a TV show (Rebelde,) a pop group, one of those that already existed in the world. They told us that pop music is easy, that pop bands disappeared easily, and many of us were classified in that place, and also for a long time we received, within the industry, from other colleagues, singers, songwriters, criticism, ridicule, parodies. And despite that we moved forward, building what RBD was. We believed in Rebelde and what we did. And the most beautiful thing is to see that 20 years later our history transcends to another place and that we can feel very proud that this went down in history within Latin music, pop music, and that is thanks to the people.

What was the biggest challenge?

RBD has been a project that has filled us with challenges, with many emotions, a lot of commitment. For me, RBD is more than a group of artists; for me we are brothers and sisters, with our defects and our qualities, with our good and our bad things. We love each other and understand each other. Regardless of that, for me, it has represented being able to balance three worlds: The first one with my baby, my family unit to join this dynamic; two months after my daughter was born we were already flying to Los Angeles to get to the tour rehearsals and to join a tour of almost five months and my husband’s support has been fundamental for me.

On the other hand, and it is something very personal but very important to me, is that in a very short period I had to be on stage, after giving birth, with many extra pounds on me, I had to be on a stage where there were many emotions, hopes and a lot of love, but with a very large magnifying glass to see how you look and what you do — you’re pregnant, you’re fat, you’re skinny, if you didn’t make it — and say, “I don’t care what they say, I don’t care what happens. I am on a stage sharing and being able to carry this.”

What difficulties did you encounter in this process?

The first thing was to commit ourselves in a much more adult way to our project, to commit ourselves to creating a company, a society, to get involved from the administrative and the legal side, and to make decisions that were decisive so that we could continue our tour, take the reins of our history, do things the right way. But I can say that today I leave with my heart full, knowing that the effort was worth it — RBD is worth it — and that together we will always be better and stronger.

What’s in RBD’s future?

The reality is that our last concert is on December 21st. We have hopes, desires. It has been beautiful! Of course the hope of being able to continue building something together remains. We’ll see what destiny and life have in store for us; we don’t know today. We are in a different process, in this closing cycle, finishing this tour in Mexico, at the Estadio Azteca, very excited and tremendously grateful.

Timothée Chalamet Jokes It Was ‘Hard to Be Present’ at Beyoncé Concert With Kylie Jenner

Timothee Chalamet reflected on a special 2023 concert experience.

The Wonka actor sat down with MTV’s Josh Horowitz this week, where the host asked Chalamet what his best concert experience of 2023 was. The star had a hard time remembering if he had attended a concert this year, before Horowitz reminded him of his “documented” attendance at Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour Los Angeles show on Sept. 4. The concert also happened to be his first public outing with rumored girlfriend Kylie Jenner, as the duo were spotted kissing and embracing throughout the PDA-filled night.

“That’s right. “That was great,” Chalamet responded, before jokingly adding, “Hard to be present.”

The Call Me By Your Name star also noted that he was surprised that he didn’t know as many Beyoncé songs as he thought he did. “I’m not, like, BeyHive-level, but I thought I knew way more [songs]. But I guess I know some of the more basic hits,” he said, adding that Bey did not perform “Halo” and “Single Ladies,” which are two of her most popular songs. “‘Halo’ was a great, moody, 12-year-old head against the bus [window] song,” Chalamet said with a laugh.

Chalamet and Jenner have been romantically linked since April. The Kylie Cosmetics founder was previously dating Travis Scott, with whom she shares daughter Stormi and son Aire. The Oscar nominee, meanwhile, was previously in a relationship with Lily-Rose Depp.

“Hang all the mistletoe / I’m gonna get to know you better / This Christmas,” the three-time Grammy winner belted the opening lines of her Kellyoke rendition of the track, dressed in a stunning, sparkling black mini dress, paired with black tights and a festive red lip.

Clarkson herself is no stranger to a holiday album, as her 2021 project When Christmas Comes Around arrived eight years after her 2013 album, Wrapped in Red. Her festive hit, “Underneath the Tree,” returned to the Holiday 100 top 10 this year at No. 9. The song, which Clarkson co-wrote with Greg Kurstin, was the lead single from her first Christmas album, 2013’s Wrapped in Red. It has so far peaked at No. 8 on the Holiday 100, in 2014.

Expect more Christmas covers from Clarkson throughout the rest of the week. She kicked off this week’s shows with unique takes on Elvis Presley’s “Blue Christmas,” “O Holy Night,” Cher’s “DJ Play a Christmas Song” and her own Christmas track “Wrapped in Red.”

People’s Choice Country Awards Picked Up for a Second Year: Here’s the Date

NBC has picked up the People’s Choice Country Awards for a second year. The two-hour show will air live from the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET/PT across NBC and Peacock.

Little Big Town hosted and performed on the inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards, which aired on Sept. 28 from the same historic venue.

The pickup means that there will be four major country awards shows again next year – the CMT Music Awards on CBS and CMT (this year’s show aired on April 2); the ACM Awards on Prime Video (this year’s show streamed on May 11); and the CMA Awards on ABC (this year’s show aired on Nov. 8). Country award shows have traditionally done well on TV, and the genre is in a hot phase right now.

Jelly Roll was the top winner at the first People’s Choice Country Awards, with six awards in four categories. That was one of the first indications of his exploding popularity. Morgan Wallen and Lainey Wilson each won three awards. Jelly Roll also performed on the show, as did Blake Shelton, Carly Pearce, Dan + Shay, HARDY, Kane Brown, Kelsea Ballerini and Icon Awards recipients Toby Keith and Wynonna Judd. (Here’s our report on snubs and surprises from the show.)

“With powerhouse performances, heartfelt tributes to country legends, and surprise moments, last year’s inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards was a huge success” Jen Neal, executive vice president, live events and specials, NBCUniversal Entertainment, said in a statement. “We look forward to returning to the Grand Ole Opry House in 2024 to honor and celebrate the country community.”

The People’s Choice Country Awards, which calls itself “the only award show for the people and by the people,” is a brand extension of the fan-driven People’s Choice Awards. That show originated on CBS in March 1975 and was a top-rated show for most of its run on that network. CBS last carried the show in 2017. E! picked it up in 2018, and NBC and E! have had “shared custody” of the show since 2021. The most recent edition, hosted by Kenan Thompson, aired on Dec. 6, 2022. The next edition is slated for Feb. 18.

Total viewership for the 2023 People’s Choice Country Awards was up +16% compared to the 2022 People’s Choice Awards simulcast. The telecast was seen by 4.3 million viewers across all platforms, and content from the show reached 25 million cross-platform users (linear, digital and social).

The 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards will be produced by Den of Thieves. Jesse Ignjatovic, Evan Prager and Barb Bialkowski will executive produce, along with RAC Clark as executive producer and showrunner.

Cher is loving Kelly Clarkson’s talent just as much as the rest of us!

The “Believe” icon took to X (previously known as Twitter) on Tuesday (Dec. 19) to gush over Clarkson’s recent Kellyoke cover of “DJ Play a Christmas Song” on the latter’s eponymous talk show. “KELLY,,,,U ACED IT,” she wrote. Cher released “DJ Play a Christmas Song” as the lead single from Christmas, her first holiday album. “DJ Play a Christmas Song” topped the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart last month — giving Cher a Billboard chart-topper in the last seven decades — while its parent album, Christmas, debuted atop Billboard‘s Top Holiday Albums chart earlier this month.

Clarkson herself also has a holiday album, 2021’s When Christmas Comes Around, which arrived eight years after her 2013 album, Wrapped in Red.

Billboard Explains: The Year-End Charts

With 2023 coming to a close, Billboard‘s year-end charts have finally touched down. But when were the year-end charts first put into practice, and how are they measured? The latest episode of Billboard Explains dives into the final charts of the calendar year, with some help from Billboard‘s Managing Director of Charts & Data Operations Keith Caulfield.

See latest videos, charts and news

The annual year-end charts were launched back in the 1940s, and have become a staple of the magazine and website since. The end-of-year tallies measure metrics for each artist, title, label and music contributor from charts dated Nov, 19, 2022, to Oct 21, 2023. Technological advancements have allowed this process to change throughout the years, but according Caulfield, the process can be simplified as such: “You take all of the combined performance for all of the songs, artists, albums on a particular chart throughout that chart year, add them all together and then you get a bunch of numbers, and that, generally speaking, is what the year-end version of what that chart looks like.”

While the data-collection process is both rigorous and regimented, surprises sometimes happen. Dua Lipa’s “Levitating” was crowned the top song on the 2021 year-end Billboard Hot 100 chart, despite it never hitting No. 1. Though the track never crowned the Hot 100, the song’s many weeks on the tally (77 during the tracking period) allowed it to have more “points” than a song that, say, reached No. 1, but was at the summit for only a week.

“It’s not always about where you peaked at on the chart during the chart year, it’s your continued performance throughout the entire year that ultimately tells the story of where you end up on the year end chart,” Caulfield adds.
