Brenda Lee’s ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’ Jingles Back to No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100

Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” rebounds to No. 1, from No. 2, on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart. The holiday classic adds a third week at the apex, four weeks after it led the list for the first time – 65 years after its release. It became Lee’s third Hot 100 No. 1, and her first since 1960.

Meanwhile, the Hot 100’s top eight titles are holiday songs for the first time ever. A year ago this week, the top seven were seasonal songs. Plus, nine of the top 10 are holiday hits for the second time, matching the festive feat first achieved three years ago this week.

The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations. All charts (dated Jan. 6, 2024) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow (Jan. 3, a day later than usual due to the New Year’s Day holiday Jan. 1). Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” on Decca/MCA Nashville/UMe, drew 57.3 million streams (up 16%, good for the Hot 100’s top Streaming Gainer award for a second consecutive week) and 22.2 million radio airplay audience impressions (down 7%) and sold 4,000 downloads (down 10%) in the Dec. 22-28 tracking week – thus, encompassing four days leading up to and including Christmas Day – according to Luminate.

The single holds at No. 1 for a fifth consecutive and sixth total week atop the Streaming Songs chart (after it first ruled the last frame of the 2022 holiday season); rises 8-6 on Digital Song Sales, after reaching No. 4; and lifts 24-22 on Radio Songs, where it has hit a No. 17 best.

The song was originally recorded and released in 1958. Written by Johnny Marks and produced by Owen Bradley, it first hit the Hot 100 in December 1960 and reached an original No. 14 peak two weeks later. It went on to spend nine weeks at No. 2 between December 2019 and last holiday season prior to its coronation over the latest holiday season.

For its 65th anniversary in 2023, Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” received its first official video, featuring cameos from country stars Tanya Tucker and Trisha Yearwood, Nov. 3. Plus, Lee performed it on NBC’s Christmas at the Opry, which aired Dec. 7. She has also joined TikTok, where she has been sharing posts about the song and her career.

Lee reminisced to Billboard on Dec. 4 about recording the carol, when she was 13, after learning of its ascent to No. 1 at last from Universal Music Group Nashville chair/CEO Cindy Mabe. “The producer cut the air way down in the studio,” Lee recalled. “He had a big Christmas tree and everyone was there – the Anita Kerr Singers and the ‘A-team’ [of Nashville studio musicians], as we called them. It was like a little touch of magic kind of sprinkled in, and it turned out to be magic. It really did.”

The song is just the third holiday No. 1 ever on the Hot 100, with all three having led for multiple weeks. “The Chipmunk Song,” by The Chipmunks with David Seville, also from 1958, spent four weeks on top beginning that December and Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” released in 1994, has notched 14 weeks at No. 1, from its first scaling of the summit in December 2019 through last week’s Dec. 30, 2023-dated chart.

With another week at No. 1, Lee extends her record for the longest span of an artist topping the Hot 100: 63 years, five months and three weeks, from her first frame at No. 1 with “I’m Sorry” (July 18, 1960) through the latest list.

Plus, Lee, at 79 years and three weeks of age, expands by another week her mark as the senior-most artist to have ruled the Hot 100. Concurrently, Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” leads the multi-metric Holiday 100 chart, which uses the same methodology as the Hot 100, for a third total week.

Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” dips to No. 2 on the Hot 100, with 54.8 million streams (up 13%), 26.5 million in airplay audience (down 16%) and 7,000 sold (down 1%). With its 2019 triumph, Carey claimed her 19th No. 1, extending her record for the most among soloists and moving to within one of The Beatles’ overall record 20. The single also reigns as the No. 1 hit on Billboard’s Greatest of All Time Holiday 100 Songs retrospective.

The rest of the Hot 100’s top five holds in place: Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock,” released in 1957, at its No. 3 high; Wham!’s “Last Christmas,” from 1984, at its No. 4 best; and Burl Ives’ “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” from 1964, at No. 5, after reaching No. 4.

Andy Williams’ “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” from 1963, rises 7-6 on the Hot 100, having hit No. 5. The late singer now sports a record span of 64 years and three months from his first week in the top 10 with “Lonely Street” in October 1959 through his latest week in the bracket.

Dean Martin’s “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!,” from 1959, ascends 8-7 for a new Hot 100 high and José Feliciano’s “Feliz Navidad,” from 1970, dashes 9-8, after logging a No. 6 peak.

Jack Harlow’s “Lovin On Me” slides 6-9 on the Hot 100, five weeks after it became his third No. 1. The chart’s top nonholiday title scores a seventh week each atop the multi-metric Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts.

Wrapping the Hot 100’s top 10, The Ronettes’ “Sleigh Ride,” from 1963, parks at No. 10 for a second straight week, after reaching No. 8. The act now boasts a span of 60 years, three months and two weeks in the top 10, dating to its iconic No. 2-peaking “Be My Baby” in September 1963 – the longest among groups. (Excluding holiday fare, The Beatles broke the record for the longest top 10 span among all acts in November: 59 years, nine months and three weeks, from “I Want to Hold Your Hand” in 1964 to the debut of their newly-released single “Now and Then.”)

See Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce Ring in 2024 With a Sweet Kiss

There’s nothing better than ringing in the new year with a kiss — just ask Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce! The music-football power couple enjoyed a sweet smooch in a fan-shared X post on Monday (Jan. 1).

The second-long clip shows Swift cradling Kelce’s face in her hands as the Kansas City Chiefs tight end leans in for a kiss. The scene appears to be a New Year’s Eve party, with the “Cruel Summer” singer sporting an updo and a sparkly dress, while Kelce wears an all-black outfit.

Earlier on New Year’s Eve, the “Anti-Hero” singer cheered on her boyfriend as the Chiefs took on the Cincinnati Bengals at Arrowhead Stadium. She also supported Kelce at his Christmas Day game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

The couple’s New Year’s kiss brings their whirlwind 2023 to a close — a year that saw both record-breaking success for Swift and the birth of a romance that has captivated the world.

Swift and Kelce have come a long way since the football player first attended her Kansas City Eras Tour stop last summer. In her December TIME Person of the Year profile, Swift revealed how their romance began, saying, “By the time I went to that first game, we were a couple. I think some people think that they saw our first date at that game? We would never be psychotic enough to hard launch a first date.”

As Kelce spends the next month helping his team fight for a spot in the Super Bowl, Swift will be prepping for the grand return of her Eras Tour. She’s set to play four consecutive nights at the Tokyo Dome in Japan from Feb. 7 to 10. Those four shows preview an entire calendar year of touring for the Grammy-winning singer; the 2024 Eras Tour shows will visit Australia, Europe and North America, and feature opening acts such as Sabrina Carpenter, Paramore and Gracie Abrams.

In 2023, Taylor Swift reigned as Billboard’s No. 1 artist of the year. Her Midnights (No. 2) and Lover (No. 9) albums both ranked among the ten biggest Billboard 200 albums of 2023, while her “Anti-Hero” ranked as the No. 4 biggest Hot 100 song of that year.

Snoop Dogg is possibly the hardest-working man in Hip-Hop, as he picks up more side gigs than a jazz musician. The D-O-Double-G will join the NBC broadcast of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, adding to his sports broadcasting experience.

As seen at Olympics.com, Snoop Dogg, 52, will be in Paris as part of the coverage team for the 2024 Summer Olympics as a special correspondent. The announcement was shared during the halftime segment of Sunday Night Football’s contest between the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings.

Some might recall that Snoop has covered the Olympics after providing hilarious and expert commentary during the 2020 Summer Olympics, which took place in 2021 after a delay due to the pandemic.

“I grew up watching the Olympics and am thrilled to see the incredible athletes bring their A-game to Paris. It’s a celebration of skill, dedication, and the pursuit of greatness,” Snoop Dogg said in a press release.

Snoop continued,”We’re going to have some amazing competitions and, of course, I will be bringing that Snoop style to the mix. It’s going to be the most epic Olympics ever, so stay tuned, and keep it locked. Let’s elevate, celebrate, and make these games unforgettable, smoke the competition, and may the best shine like gold. Peace and Olympic LOVE, ya dig?”

Snoop Dogg will join NBC Olympics host Mike Tirico and offer his takes and observations, no doubt exhibiting his usual Long Beach, Calif. coolness.

The Olympic Games Paris 2024 are scheduled for July 26 through August 11, 2024, and will air on NBC and its various cable network holdings.

Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean and wife Rochelle DeAnna McLean announced on Monday (Jan. 1) that they have decided to end their 12-year marriage. The couple, who separated a year ago, released a joint statement confirming their divorce.

“As you all know we have been separated for over a year now,” they wrote. “While we have hoped for reconciliation we have decided to officially end our marriage. It is with deep love and respect that we have made this decision.”

McLean, 45, and his ex, 42, also posted about their separation in March 2023, explaining, “Marriage is hard, but worth it. We have mutually decided to separate temporarily to work on ourselves, and on our marriage with the hope of building a stronger future. The plan is to come back together and continue to nurture our love for one another and our family. We ask for respect and privacy at this time. Separation is hard enough without the commentary, please be kind and remember there are children involved.”

The couple married in December 2011 after dating for six years and share two daughters, Ava (who goes by Elliott) and Lyric. “Our focus now is moving forward in the healthiest possible way with friendship and coparenting our girls at the forefront of this next chapter,” their joint New Year’s day post continued. “We appreciate your kindness, respect and privacy at this time.”

McLean was on hand in November along with the members of *NSYNC, Camila Cabello and more stars to celebrate the release of Trolls Band Together.

The BSB are scheduled to play a gig at Valaria de la Feria in Leon, Mexico on Feb. 3 before kicking off their four-gig Backstreet’s Back at the Beach residency at the Moon Palace Resort in Cancun on April 18.

Robbie Williams on ‘Trauma Watch’ of His Netflix Docuseries & Toll of 3-Hour Concerts: ‘Taylor, Whoever — Why Would You Do That?’

Starting with his teenage days in the U.K. boy band Take That, Robbie Williams was thrust into the spotlight, with cameras following his every move. That constant presence of cameras offered the British pop superstar a unique opportunity: to sit down and revisit his decades as an entertainer, watching footage of himself over the years and his rollercoaster ride of a career, from the euphoric highs to the traumatic lows.

In a new interview with the Billboard Pop Shop Podcast (listen in full below), Williams talks about the four-episode Netflix docuseries Robbie Williams — from director Joe Pearlman and Ridley Scott Associates — that finds the singer/songwriter sitting on his bed in his undies, watching his life back through eye-opening archival footage.

“When Netflix and Ridley Scott’s company come and say, ‘We’d like to do a documentary about you and have it be on the platform Netflix,’ you know, I’m an attention seeker by trade,” Williams says. “And I’m honored. What else would an attention seeker say other than: ‘Yes, please’”

Even though it was an easy yes for Williams, that doesn’t mean it was an easy process, with filming taking place over 25 straight days for up to six or seven hours a day. “Not many people on the planet have done anything like that, so there’s no support groups for, you know, a trauma watch,” he says. “But it was very interesting, sort of leaving the room each day and then going to get in bed with my wife and trying to explain how it feels. It’s only become therapeutic since it’s been released. It wasn’t therapeutic at the time. It was just, it was traumatic.”

One of the biggest takeaways from the film is how much Williams battled mental health issues over the years and how his struggles often fell on deaf ears.

“Mental health wasn’t really talked about,” he says. “And when I talked about it back then, I was derided for moaning or complaining. And that isolated me even more in a place of isolation and depression and anxiety and body dysmorphia. And agoraphobia. And all of the obias, you know, to then on top of that be told that you shouldn’t talk about it, because how dare you? It made it even worse.”

Williams’ biggest challenges came when he was touring the world, often taking frequent steroid shots just to survive the physical toll that performing took on his body — and then dealing with the aftermath of those drugs the next day. We asked him about artists like Taylor Swift taking that challenge a step further by playing three-hour-plus concerts, and he was flabbergasted at the length of those shows.

“Why would you do three-and-a-half-hour sets?” he asks. “Listen, I love Taylor Swift. But if you take Taylor out of the equation, and whoever — Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Taylor, whoever — why would you do that to yourself? And why would you do that to an audience?

“It’s mind-blowing that they’re able to do that, especially people in their 80s,” he adds. “But, you know, what do I want, as a fan? I want to hear all of the hits. And I want to be entertained for 90 minutes to 100 minutes. And then I want to go home happy. I haven’t got the attention to watch anything for three hours. If I look at a film that is now a two-and-a-half-hour, three-hour film, I don’t watch it. I haven’t got it in me.”

The Robbie Williams docuseries ends with Williams heading back out on the road for his XXV World Tour — which, along with a new greatest-hits collection, celebrates 25 years of his solo career and just wrapped last month — and the artist says he’s still coming to terms with life as a performer. “This tour that I’ve just done has been the most successful for me mentally and emotionally,” he says. “And I think that a great deal has to do with the fact that I can override or make friends with the anxiety. But I’m still not there. When it comes to touring. I don’t know how to not let it damage me in some sort of way. Now listen: It’s not complaining, because financially, it’s incredible. Emotionally, it’s incredible. Physically and mentally, it’s no wonder that people sort of end up in emergency rooms or rehab after tour or during tours. The toll that it takes out of you is still a phenomena that I’m trying to overcome.”

Our interview also addresses his new perspective as a father of four (“When my kids are 16 … I think there will be a stark realization of exactly what I should and shouldn’t have been going through at that particular moment,” he says of his Take That days), his life of relative anonymity in America (“I could be Bruce Wayne in Los Angeles and Batman in the rest of the world”) and his New Year’s resolutions heading into 2024.

Ana Ofelia Murguía, Voice of Mama Coco in ‘Coco,’ Dies at 90

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican actor Ana Ofelia Murguía, who gave voice to the character of “Mama Coco” in the popular Pixar film Coco, has died, Mexican officials said. She was 90.

Mexico’s National Fine Arts Institute announced Murguía’s death Sunday without providing a cause of death.

“She leaves an enormous void on our country’s sets,” Culture Secretary Alejandra Frausto Guerrero said in a statement.

Coco, which was released in 2017, brought Murguía to an international audience late in life.

But the actor had a long acting career in Mexican film and television, and on the stage. She appeared in some 70 plays and 90 movies, including Life Sentence (1979) and The Queen of the Night (1994).

In the animated Coco, she voiced the soft-spoken great-grandmother of a boy discovering his family’s musical history.

In April, the National Autonomous University of Mexico awarded Murguía its Ingmar Bergman Medal for leaving “an indelible mark” on Mexican film and theater.

In her acceptance speech, Murguía displayed her typical humility, asking “Why me?” She said she was exhausted by all of the recognition and plaudits.

“This career has been my life,” Murguía said. “It has been the passion of my life. I’ve loved it.”

Uncle Murda Delivers His View Of The Culture On “Rap Up 2023”

Uncle Murda has carved out a particular niche for himself via his “Rap Up” series that he began some years ago. The East New York, Brooklyn rapper is back with “Rap Up 2023” and as one can imagine, several big names catch shots and strays along the way.

Uncle Murda, rocking over a beat from Great John, opens up the song seemingly suggesting that the medical episode Jamie Foxx suffered earlier this year was allegedly connected to drug use. Blueface and Soulja Boy, both engaged in a public feud, were mentioned by Murda and Young Thug caught a shot along with Gunna, with Murda admitting that the latter’s latest album was “hot.”

Rising star Sexxy Red caught some criticism over her lyrics and even mentioned that he heard alleged rumors of the rapper having STDs. He then flipped that thought into Sexxy Red’s hook from Drake’s “Rich Baby Daddy” track from the Canadian rapper’s For All The Dogs album, adding that young girls shouldn’t be listening to her music.

Continuing his unrelenting assault on the culture, Uncle Murda then aimed at André 3000 and his New Blue Sun album, echoing the same complaints other fans of the Outkast rapper voiced over Stacks choosing to play flute instead of rapping.

Other names mentioned included Joe Budden, Taxstone, Cardi B, Offset, Tory Lanez, Megan Thee Stallion, Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, Elliott Wilson, and more.

Sophie Turner Reflects on ‘Year of the Girlies,’ Makes 2024 Prediction Amid Joe Jonas Split

Sophie Turner had the support of her girlfriends amid her split from husband Joe Jonas in 2023, and now she’s reflecting on that time in an Instagram post.

“2023 was the year of the girlies,” she reflected in the Jan. 2 carousel of snaps with her pals. She also made a prediction for the new year: “2024s forecast is looking fairly consistent.”

Among the snaps was a group photo that included Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter at the Oct. 1 New York Jets vs. Kansas City Chiefs game at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The squad had joined Swift — who briefly dated Jonas in 2008 — in cheering on her new love, Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce. (Hugh Jackman, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds and more were also spotted with the “Anti-Hero” singer at the game.)

Other photos show the former Game of Thrones star enjoying some quality girl time with her friends over meals, relaxing and goofing off in lush fields, showing off new tattoos and a video clip of fun times on the ski slopes.

Since her split from Jonas, Turner has been spotted out multiple times with Swift. Among the girls’ nights out was a weekend in early November, when the actress was out in Manhattan with the 12-time Grammy winner, Selena Gomez and Brittany Mahomes, who is married to Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Turner and Swift also spent time together in New York City in mid September, shortly after news of the actress’ split from the musician broke.

Jonas filed for divorce on Sept. 5 after four years of marriage, stating in his petition that “the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken.” The two share two young daughters.

The former couple shared a joint statement on their social media accounts the day after the Jonas Brothers singer filed to split. “We have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage,” their statement began. “There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.”

Cardi B and Offset Hung Out on New Year’s Eve, But She Assures Fans They’re Not Back Together

If Cardi B listed her relationship status on her socials, at the moment it would definitely read “it’s very complicated.” After the “Bongos” rapper revealed in early December that she was single following her split from husband Offset, she confounded the Bardigang over the weekend when she gleefully announced that the estranged couple had hooked up on the last night of 2023.

Don’t get it twisted, though, she said, that does not mean they are back together.

In a live Twitter chat on Monday (Jan. 1), Cardi seemed to confirm that she and the Migos rapper got busy on New Year’s Eve. “Was I clubbing with my baby father yesterday?” a congested Cardi said during the X event. “Yes. Did I got d—ed down yesterday? Absolutely baby… I need some d–k on New Year’s Eve.”

The rapper said she felt like she and ‘Set were “vibing” on Sunday and had a good time together.

According to social media posts, the former couple celebrated 2024’s arrival at a strip club in Miami, making it rain and dancing along with a group of friends. Both had performed earlier that night at the Fontainbleau Miami Beach, with Offset rocking LIV and Cardi playing poolside as part of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest.

And though it appeared to be a happy reunion, days earlier Cardi blasted her fans for speculating that the couple had reconciled. “I must be a lil toxic cuz I enjoyed cursing ya out today… but we not taking that into 2024. Now have a good day. No make it a bad day!” she said in a fiery X post on Friday.

Just hours before in a live X space event, Cardi reportedly told fans to “shut the f–k up” after they speculated that she’d made nice with Offset, slamming her “own f–king fan base” for “talking s–t” about her. “Did I say I was back together with somebody?” she yelled. Cardi and Offset were spotted together in New York over the Christmas holiday, leading Cardi to hit “like” on a Dec. 27 reply featuring a meme of Real Housewives of Atlanta‘s Kandi Burruss telling Porsha Williams, “you just made that up” in response to a gossip item saying “Cardi B has officially took Offset back after 12 days.”
