‘Elvis Evolution’ Immersive AI Hologram Show Coming to London in Winter 2024

More than half a century after his first comeback, Elvis Presley is combing back, again. U.K. company Layered Reality announced this week that it is prepping an holographic AI concert special entitled “Elvis Evolution” that is slated to debut in London in November.

In a statement announcing the special event, immersive experience specialists (The Gunpowder Plot) Layered Reality promise that the mind-blowing “concert finale” featuring the King of Rock will feature a “jaw-dropping” performance and a “personal invite to the After Party.”

“The show peaks with a concert experience that will recreate the seismic impact of seeing Elvis live for a whole new generation of fans, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy,” reads a statement announcing the show. “A life sized digital Elvis will share his most iconic songs and moves for the very first time on a UK stage.”

The show promises to use Layered Reality’s patented blend of “technology, augmented reality, theatre, projection and multi-sensory effects” to reproduce the late rock icon for his first-ever shows outside of North America nearly half a century after Presley’s 1977 death.

“Elvis fans can look forward to a memory-making experience like no other. Through AI and groundbreaking tech you’ll be able to witness iconic Elvis performances as if you were really there, and celebrate defining moments in Elvis Presley’s extraordinary life and career,” the statement continues. “After the show, the central London venue will also host an After Party at its ELVIS-themed restaurant and bar with live music, DJs and performances.”

At press time the name of the London venue hosting the event had not yet been revealed. In a video tease, Layered Reality founder and CEO Andrew McGuinness promised that the show will go on a global tour after its London debut — reportedly hitting Las Vegas, Berlin and Tokyo as well — following a deal reached with the owner of the Presley estate, Authentic Brands Group.

“You’re going to go on a journey and really understand what Elvis went through during his life,” McGuinness said. “The end of this experience is a real crescendo, where you’ll see a life-sized Elvis in AI perform some of his biggest hits.” The Elvis AI show will follow on the heels of the hit London show “ABBA Voyage,” which digitally recreated the beloved Swedish pop band via digital avatars.

One of the best-selling artists in music history with over 500 million records sold worldwide, Elvis, who died at 42, has been everywhere over the past two years thanks to Baz Luhrmann’s Oscar-nominated biopic Elvis and Sofia Coppola’s Golden Globe-nominated Priscilla. The rock legend was also back in the Billboard Hot 100 top 20 over the Christmas holiday when his 1957 classic “Blue Christmas” hit No. 18 on the chart dated Jan. 6, 2024, marking the first time one of his songs has has charted since “Way Down” peaked at No. 18 in Oct. 1977.

Mark Cuban Has MAGA Mutts Upset After Dunking On Phony Stark AKA Elon Musk Over DEI

2023 NBA Summer League - Dallas Mavericks v Oklahoma City Thunder

Mark Cuban is known as one of the top business executives in the world and maintains an outspoken image on social media, especially when it comes to issues important to the times. Cuban, who just sold a controlling interest in the Dallas Mavericks, checked Elon Musk and the Tesla founder’s criticism of DEI measures in eloquent fashion but that upset some of the MAGA mutts out there.

Mark Cuban, 65, took to X to check Elon Musk and his offhand critique of DEI. Musk wrote, “DEI is just another word for racism. Shame on anyone who uses it” to which journalist Ed Krassenstein replied with, “I don’t think DEI is “racism” but it definitely can have some major flaws that should be addressed.”

Musk fired back with “Discrimination on the basis of race, which DEI does, is literally the definition of racism” which prompted Cuban to chime in as the pair debated the finer points of DEI.

A portion of the response from Mark Cuban’s X account:

Let me help you out and give you my thoughts on DEI

1. Diversity
Good businesses look where others don’t, to find the employees that will put your business in the best possible position to succeed.
You may not agree, but I take it as a given that there are people of various races, ethnicities, orientation, etc that are regularly excluded from hiring consideration. By extending our hiring search to include them, we can find people that are more qualified. The loss of DEI-Phobic companies is my gain.

1a. We live in a country with very diverse demographics. In this era where trust of businesses can be hard to come by, people tend to connect more easily to people who are like them. Having a workforce that is diverse and representative of your stakeholders is good for business.

While Cuban’s measured response didn’t attack Musk and offered a solution-based approach, the MAGA stooges and those concerned with the myth of the erasure of the white male and other such nonsense dismissed the businessman’s viewpoints.

On X, we’ve captured reactions from all sides below.

Stray Kids Tease New Album and 2024 World Tour in Cinematic ‘Step Out 2024’ Video Recap

It looks like 2024 is going to be a big year for K-pop group Stray Kids. After hitting No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2023 with their 5-Star album and performing at Lollapalooza in Chicago and Paris, the eight-member group dropped their annual “Step Out” video on New Year’s Day. The clip looked backward at their achievements last year, while also previewing what sounds like a very busy upcoming schedule.

The dreamy clip, in which Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin and I.N lounge and stroll through a soft-focus landscape of flowers in gleaming white outfits, ticked off a long list of accomplishments over the past 365 days. And, in a physical manifestation of what’s ahead, they change into mismatched, high-fashion outfits and step through a white door to find out “what’s next.”

Among the items on the list: their third world tour, the 4th fanmeeting for their diehard Stay fan group, a new, as-yet-untitled album, as well as what they promised was another “special album” release, new video content via 8 SKZ-Player releases and new episodes of the 2 Kids Show and 1 Kid’s Room. There will also be SKZOO pop-up stores in Seoul and Busan, South Korea.

The group landed their first Billboard Hot 100 single in 2023 with “LALALALA,” from their mini-album ROCK-STAR, which also topped the Billboard 200 album chart. They won the top K-pop album award at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards, where they lit up the stage with performances of “LALALALA” and “S-Class.”

Madonna: The Celebration Tour - London

Madonna kicked off her music career in the early 1980s and she has remained a fixture on the charts and touring circuit well into the 21st Century. However, a new video featuring the “Queen of Pop” has X users both slamming her for being a woman of a certain age with others praising her for doing so at this stage of life.

Madonna, 65, is currently on her North American The Celebration Tour, which honors her four-decade career in music. From what has been reported, the singer and actress has been wowing crowds with her hits and performances, but a clip posted by an X user has taken hold on the social media network.

An X user named @JebraFaushay clipped a TikTok video from the @madonnalivepop408 account of the singer performing “Ray Of Light” in a silver suit while holding a bar. While the clip makes it seem like Madonna is using the bar to support herself, it appears to be a safety precaution as another video shows the “Like A Virgin” star performing on an elevated and mobile pedestal.

As the ageist comments rolled on in droves on both TikTok and X, Public Enemy frontman Chuck D was among the many to defend Madonna for having the moves and energy to rock a crowd at her age while mentioning her use of pilates to stay in shape.

“At 63 i know i can bike better than i ever did and Pilates aint easy but i give it to @Madonna for pushing the bars … @FlavorFlav is taking Pilates too and hes 64. So ageism sometimes gets like racism both ways if you let it. For anyone over 50 the rule is either you do the songs or the songs do you. @Madonna has some hard songs to perform in her catalogue,” Chuck D wrote.

UMG Acquires Catalog of UK-Based South Asian Label Oriental Star Agencies

Universal Music Group (UMG) has acquired the catalog of Oriental Star Agencies (OSA). Founded in 1966 in London by Pakistani immigrants Muhammad Ayyub and his brothers, OSA is known as one of the United Kingdom’s top labels for South Asian talent.

The OSA catalog consists primarily of recorded music, but the new UMG deal encompasses all of its master recording holdings and its publishing. This includes 18,000 songs and video recordings, including from Malkit Singh, a well-known Bhangra artist; Bally Sagoo; and Attaullah Khan. It also includes works from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, a prolific, Grammy-nominated artist and film composer who is known for popularizing a form of Sufi devotional music, called “qawwali,” outside of his native Pakistan.

The sounds of OSA artists were able to permeate the United Kingdom’s musical consciousness even further at the turn of the 21st century, when several older OSA tracks were placed on the soundtrack of the hit soccer movie, Bend It Like Beckham, released in 2002. The label continued to operate independently until 2017 when it sold to Hi-Tech Music, another British record label.

According to IFPI’s Global Music Report, the Asian recorded music market grew 15.4% in 2023, marking the third consecutive year the continent has experienced double-digit revenue growth. Now, Asia accounts for just under 23% of the global market and is expected to continue to expand. Japan, South Korea and China account for the majority of Asia’s global music exports, but South Asian countries overall continue to grow year after year.

In recent years, as the music catalog market grew red hot and competition among buyers became greater than ever, some investors showedincreased interest in acquiring music from typically underrepresented genres and nationalities in the catalog market. Reservoir, for example, invested in new relationships and catalogs in Saudi Arabia and Egypt; Wahoo Music Fund One focused solely on Latin music purchases; Singapore-based blackx tried to corner the Asian music market; and Armada Music’s BEAT started buying up dance catalogs.

According to a press release about the OSA deal, the catalog acquisition “complements UMG’s current service offering and will help drive momentum for the South Asian music market, enabling local artists to reach the largest possible audience in the global community.”

“This acquisition of a hugely successful and iconic British-Asian label specializing in South Asian music will further increase Universal Music Group’s exposure to, and participation in, a fast growing and rapidly changing market,” said Adam Granite, executive vp of market development at UMG, in a statement. “I am particularly pleased that Universal Music Group will become the next custodian of Oriental Star Agencies, a label that has played an unparalleled role in bridging the musical identities of the UK and South Asia, taking the unique sounds of its artists to a broad audience. We believe this catalog has huge potential, and look forward to taking it to the next generation of music fans globally.”

“This is a momentous day for OSA and all our artists,” added Mohammed Twassen of OSA. “Becoming part of the UMG family will turbo-charge our South Asian music, helping it to get in front of more music fans across the world. The past decade has seen a true global explosion of music from the region, and now, under UMG’s stewardship, the next decade promises to be even more exciting.”

Taylor Swift and The Beatles Dominated U.K. Vinyl Sales In 2023

As sales of vinyl grew for the 16th consecutive year in the U.K., Taylor Swift and The Beatles reigned supreme.

Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) (via EMI) was the U.K.’s biggest-selling vinyl album of 2023, according to data published by the Official Charts Company, shifting 84,700 copies on the format since its release last October.

The fourth in Swift’s re-recording projects blasted to the biggest opening week for any album in 2023 (with more than 184,000 combined units), and logged three weeks at No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart. Based on midweek data, it’s set to log a fourth when the weekly chart is published this Friday, Jan. 5.

Swifties love their wax. 1989 (Taylor’s Version) is one of three Swift LPs to crack the top 10 on the Official Top 40 best-selling vinyl albums of 2023, ahead of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) (No. 4) and Midnights (No. 8), while another five titles impact the year-end chart: Lover (No. 20), folklore (No. 21), reputation (No. 27), evermore (No. 37) and the Record Store Day limited-edition release folklore – The Long Pond Studio Sessions (No. 38).

Completing the podium on the U.K.’s year-end vinyl albums chart is The Rolling StonesHackney Diamonds (Polydor), at No. 2; and Lana Del Rey’s Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd (Polydor), at No. 3, respectively.

Meanwhile, The Beatles’ “last” single “Now And Then” (via Apple Corps), released 53 years after the Fab Four split, is crowned the best-selling vinyl single of 2023 in the U.K.

The song, which began life as a demo recorded by John Lennon in the late 1970s, and which features contributions from all four members of the legendary band, moved 33,000 copies on vinyl since its release, which included 12” and 7” versions, with fans snapping up clear, light blue and blue/white marble editions.

En route to No. 1 on the weekly tally last November, “Now And Then” established a flurry of records, including the longest span between an artist’s first and last No. 1, and the U.K.’s fastest-selling vinyl single of the century.

On the year-end vinyl singles tally, Boygenius’s “The Rest” (Interscope) comes in behind the Beatles, at No. 2, while veteran electronic music wizard Aphex Twin completes the top 3 with “Blackbox Life Recorder 21F” (Warp). British punk icons the Sex Pistols land three vinyl releases in the U.K.’s top 10, all via Virgin: “Anarchy in the U.K.” (No. 5), “Holidays in the Sun” (No. 6) and “Pretty Vacant” (No. 9).

Vinyl is no trifling matter. Data published by the BPI, which operates the OCC in a joint venture with entertainment retail body ERA, shows that the format posted its 16th consecutive year of growth in 2023.
Year-on-year growth was 11.7% to 5.9 million units (up to week 51), for the highest annual sales figures for the format since 1990. That’s well up on the 2.9% growth recorded in the previous year.

Rage Against The Machine Calls Time on ‘Playing Live Again’

Rage Against The Machine fans will need to find another outlet to release their anger, because the ‘90s rock legends won’t be playing live again.

That’s according to comments posted by drummer Brad Wilk, and shared widely by RATM’s official X (formerly Twitter) page late Wednesday (Jan. 3).

RATM pushes out a news story published by Blabbermouth and based on comments made by Wilk, who insists the band “will not be touring or playing live again.”

Earlier, Wilk shared his thoughts on Instagram. “I know a lot of people are waiting for us to announce new tour dates for all the canceled RATM shows. I don’t want to string people or myself along any further,” he writes.

“So while there has been some communication that this may be happening in the future… I want to let you know that RATM (Tim, Zack, Tom and I) will not be touring or playing live again.

“I’m sorry for those of you who have been waiting for this to happen. I really wish it was…”

RATM’s post is a curious one which, at the time of writing, wasn’t shared to the rockers’ Facebook or Instagram pages and fails to mention whether recording projects are still in the cards. Bandmates Zack de la Rocha (vocals), bassist and backing vocalist Tim Commerford (bass) and Tom Morello (guitar) have not commented.

The L.A. group was finally tapped for the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2023, after five tries. Internal band issues were obvious then; Morello was the only member to attend the induction ceremony at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

RATM released just four albums during their initial 1991-2000 run before reforming for live dates from 2007-2011 and again in 2019 for a string of shows that were first interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and then by de la Rocha’s leg injury.

LPs Evil Empire (from 1996) and The Battle Of Los Angeles (1999) both peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

RATM has made eight total appearances on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay, with three songs in the top 10 (all in 2000), including “Guerrilla Radio,” which peaked at No. 69 on the Hot 100.

Few songs, however, have the power and fury of RATM’s signature song from 1992, “Killing In The Name,” a record that connected with youths everywhere and sprayed enough energy to enable them run through walls.

When their name was called out for induction into the Rock Hall class of ’23, the band recounted, by way of a statement, how they put their rage into action.

They were, the statement reads, “A band who shut down the NY Stock Exchange for the first time in its history.

“A band who was targeted by police organizations who attempted to ban us from sold out arenas for raising our voices to free Mumia Abu Jamal, Leonard Peltier and other political prisoners

“A band who sued the US State Department for their fascist practice of using our music to torture innocent men in Guantanamo Bay.”

And, “a band who wrote rebel songs in an abandoned, industrial warehouse in the valley that would later dethrone Simon Cowell ’s X Factor pop monopoly to occupy the number 1 spot on the UK charts and have the most downloaded song in U.K. history.”

It’s now an amusing piece of U.K. chart history that, following a public campaign, “Killing In The Name” became 2009’s coveted Christmas U.K. No. 1 – and in doing so killing the established tradition that the winner of X Factor would claim the prize.

At 2024 Golden Globes, Here’s What’s Happening With the Cecil B. DeMille & Carol Burnett Awards

If you’re wondering who is going to receive the Cecil B. DeMille and Carol Burnett Awards at the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday (Jan. 7), you can stop wondering. The awards will not be presented this year.

In a preview of the show on the Golden Globes website on Dec. 19, they suggested, “This is not a permanent change, with future awards slated to be given.”

The reason given for shelving the two honorary awards was time constraints. The show is adding two new categories – one for cinematic and box office excellence and another for best performance by a stand-up comic. The show also upped the number of contenders in 25 of the competitive categories from five to six.

Of course, unless the show drops one or both of these new awards and/or goes back to just five nominees in each category next year, it will face the same time constraints then. It’s possible that the real reason for putting the honorary awards on hiatus this year is that they were unable to attract the caliber of recipients they have in the past. The show is working to rebuild its credibility after a well-publicized (and freely acknowledged) series of scandals.

The Cecil B. DeMille Award was first presented in 1952 to DeMille, the director of such films as Cleopatra (1934), Samson and Delilah (1949), The Greatest Show on Earth (1952) and The Ten Commandments (1956). The award has been presented every year since except for 1976, 2008 and 2022. (The show was not televised in 2022.)

The last five recipients of the DeMille award are indicative of the stature of its recipients over the decades –  Eddie Murphy (2023), Jane Fonda (2021), Tom Hanks (2020), Jeff Bridges (2019) and Oprah Winfrey (2018).

The Burnett Award was first presented in 2019 to Burnett, the beloved star of the long-running The Carol Burnett Show. It is meant to be the TV equivalent of the DeMille Award. The other recipients are Glee creator Ryan Murphy (2023), legendary producer Norman Lear (2021) and retired talk show host Ellen DeGeneres (2020). Lear died on Dec. 5, 2023 at age 101.

Billboard Editors Predict Latin Music Trends to Look For in 2024

You know what they say: new year, new music! In celebration of 2024’s arrival, the Billboard Latin and Billboard Español teams have predicted some of the Latin music trends that we believe will take off this year based on their momentum from 2023.

Last year, we reached out to various hitmakers such as Edgar Barrera, MAG and Ovy on the Drums, who all shared their predictions for 2023.

MAG, known for producing bangers for Bad Bunny, said it best: “I love that we’re seeing the global expansion of several Latin music subgenres other than just reggaetón. It’s exciting to see bachata and regional Mexican music growing outside of their rooted territories.”

With the massive success of artists like Peso Pluma, Fuerza Regida, Carin León and Grupo Frontera, to name a few, it’s evident that Música Mexicana dominated 2023, over any other Latin genre.

For Barrera, this is due to “being raw and authentic, being true to their sound and not trying to chase whatever is working for someone else,” he previously told Billboard about Mexican music expanding to new markets outside of Latin America.

Like the growth of Regional Mexican music, Emiliano Vasquez, A&R at Sony Music Latin, predicted a growth in bachata music for 2023—and he was right. “Bachata is becoming more popular as it merges with different musical genres, such as R&B, pop, electronica, hip-hop and trap. It is very common to see pop and urban artists recording bachata in their promotional singles and achieving great acceptance, even without originally being bachateros,” he said.

That same year, many urban and pop acts unleashed bachata tunes including Maria Becerra & Enrique Iglesias, Sofia Reyes & Beele, and Chayanne.

Which Latin music trends should we be looking out for this year? Check out our predictions below.

On the R&B tip, Usher and H.E.R. get sexy with it and in their clip for “Risk It All,” the two strip down to their drawers and pose in multiple positions that are both sensual and artistic.
