Selena Gomez Whispers to a Shocked Taylor Swift at Golden Globes & Fans Are Obsessed

Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift have been blessing the world with the best award show moments since the late 2000s, and Sunday night’s (Jan. 7) Golden Globes were no exception.

In a moment captured from several camera angles, the Only Murders in the Building star walks over and whispers something to her longtime bestie, prompting a hilariously shocked expression from the “Anti-Hero” singer. Also gasping at Swift’s side is close friend Keleigh Sperry, who’s married to Top Gun: Maverick star Miles Teller and appeared in Swift’s “I Bet You Think About Me” music video.

The viral clips have left the internet reeling, with many dying to know what two of the most famous women on the planet might’ve been talking about during the award show’s commercial break. Some lip-reading fans even have theories of their own.

“the tea selena gave taylor must be piping hot,” one person tweeted.

“selena being like ‘MHMMMMM’ at keleigh and taylor’s faces oh i need the tea,” wrote another, while a third added, “to be a fly on the wall oh my god.”

Both women attended this year’s Globes as nominees, with Gomez’s Only Murders performance recognized in the best female actor in a TV series, musical or comedy category, and Swift up for cinematic and box office achievement for her Eras Tour concert film. (Gomez lost to The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri, while Barbie was victorious in Swift’s category.) At Gomez’s side that night was her boyfriend Benny Blanco, with whom she posted a behind-the-scenes kissing photo on her Instagram Story after the ceremony.

And while there was no shortage of sweet moments from this year’s awards, there were also a few awkward ones. Namely, when host Jo Koy cracked a joke about the NFL’s extensive coverage of Swift’s presence at Travis Kelce’s Chiefs games, to which she definitely did not smile

The lineup also includes Columbian pop star Kali Uchis, rapper Megan Thee Stallion, desert rock outfit Queens of the Stone Age and The Kid LAROI, along with Dominic Fike, St. Vincent, Norah Jones, The Offspring and My Morning Jacket. The BottleRock announcement traditionally serves as a talent preview of what’s ahead for festival bookings.

Co-owned and operated by Live Nation and Napa Vally’s Lattitude 38, the festival has enjoyed tremendous success since it was taken over in 2014 by Lattitude 38 partners David Graham, Justin Dragoo and Jason Scoggins. Napa’s food and wine scene has always been key to the DNA of the festival, but musically, finding BottleRock’s sweet spot has long been a passion of Graham and talent buyer Tom Hoppa.

Graham often relies on outside advice and suggestions from his partners at Live Nation and spends a lot of time speaking with managers to better understand the artists’ own vision for their career. The result is a lineup highlighting a variety of genres and acts at different points in their career.

Also on the bill: Nelly, T-Pain, Miike Snow, Oliver Tree, Bebe Rexha, Cold War Kids, Jessie Murph, Stephen Sanchez and many more. BottleRock will take place in the heart of the City of Napa at the Napa Valley Expo on May 24-26, 2024. Three-day general admission tickets begin at $456 per person — all in pricing — and go on sale at 10am Pacific on Tuesday, January 9 on their website.

Warner Music CEO Robert Kyncl’s New Year’s Note Outlines 10-Year Plan

Now that Warner Music Group chairman/CEO Robert Kyncl has had a full year at the helm of the major label, he has released a New Year’s note to staff, obtained by Billboard, outlining a plan to kick into gear and set the company up for the next 10 years of changes in the music business.

In the note, Kyncl says he’s referring to the year 2024 as “The Year of the Next 10 — the year when we move at velocity to set ourselves up for a winning decade in the new world.”

“As we start the new year, one thing I’d like us all to remember is that our world has fundamentally changed… the music business is in a very different place than it was 10 years ago,” Kyncl writes. “Now, we’re in a position of strength. That is the time to get ahead for the future.”

He then emphasizes three key areas that he sees as crucial for the next year: growing the engagement with music; increasing the value of music; and evolving how the team works together.

On the first point, Kyncl breaks it down into four main focus points. The first, he writes, is about focusing A&R more on capturing opportunity, including geographically (“based on where artists and songwriters come from and where their streams are going”) and looking forward, as with identifying genres that will grow in the future. The second, in marketing, he emphasizes the partnership between marketing, A&R, tech and business intelligence to better focus efforts and better use the data available. The third, in catalog, emphasizes the ability to market and promote WMG’s extensive catalog on the same lines as it does its frontline music, particularly in digital optimization, given that catalog is driving some 70% of consumption in the current market. And finally, he emphasizes distribution and administration, in beefing up both the services available to the “middle class of artists” and in the major’s publishing admin business, which he wants to scale up further.

The second point, focusing on value, is about solving in 2024 for some of the conversations that rose up and started to dominate in 2023: namely, the value of artists and music on streaming platforms, as well as the issues surrounding the dilution of the royalty pool from the likes of functional music and white-noise tracks. Kyncl has previously spoken about the importance of streaming services raising prices, which many did in the past year, which he stresses as well. And finally, he stresses the need to further develop artist-to-superfan relationships, which he calls “relatively untapped and under-monetized,” though notes that WMG has initiatives in the works in many of these areas already.

The final point, on working together, is about reorienting how the WMG team works, including through leaning into expertise, transparency, flexibility, collaboration across departments and within teams, relying on metrics and not being afraid to lead rather than follow the industry.

Kyncl also takes time to point out some of WMG’s successes in the past year, including big years by the likes of Zach Bryan, Jack Harlow and Gunna; returns from Dua Lipa, David Guetta and Ed Sheeran; and catalog victories for the music of David Bowie, Madonna and Talking Heads, among others, while looking forward to new music from Gabby Barrett, Maria Becerra, Green Day and more.

Looking at the past several decades in 10-year chunks is a useful way of catching snapshots of how markedly things have changed. In 2004, the CD boom had decidedly stalled, as piracy began to take chunks out of the record industry and the business was in the midst of its protracted struggle with piracy and the digital revolution. By 2014, the industry had effectively bottomed out, with recorded revenues hitting their nadir as streaming had been introduced but had yet to catch on as a viable, much less dominant, format for the business. Now, in 2024, with streaming far and away the biggest source of revenue for a booming business, the revenue model is being hotly scrutinized, as new technologies and increasing fraud and volume threaten to overwhelm the now-established status quo.

In that respect, Kyncl sees this year as a pivotal one to answer several of these big questions, and set WMG up for the next decade of challenges and opportunities in the business. “We’re going to fuel the growth of this company using the same resourcefulness and determination with which we develop our artists and songwriters,” he writes. “Because ultimately that’s what will serve them best.”

The Familie Moving HQ to Nashville, Puts Royce Risser in Charge of Country Division

Sports and music company The Familie has expanded to Nashville, and is set to make Music City the company’s national headquarters.

“Nashville is a city that is inspired by culture, diversity, arts and entertainment, and – from a business perspective – encourages entrepreneurship and growth with no state-income tax and a low barrier to entry for real estate, including commercial real estate,” The Familie founder/CEO Steve Astephen tells Billboard via email.

The Familie’s roster includes Machine Gun Kelly, Avril Lavigne, Jaden Hossler, Games We Play and sombr.

Former Universal Music Group Nashville executive vp of promotion Royce Risser will lead the company’s new country music division and oversee the Nashville office’s operations. Chase Berlin has been hired as the company’s first artist manager in Nashville.

Risser has more than three decades of music industry experience, starting at MCA Records as an intern in 1991 before being hired as a promotion assistant. Risser rose through the ranks at UMGN, leading promotion efforts and rising to executive vp of promotion. Along the way, Risser worked with artists including George Strait, Vince Gill, Reba McEntire, Luke Bryan, Keith Urban, Chris Stapleton, Sam Hunt, Eric Church, Carrie Underwood, Dierks Bentley, Jon Pardi and Brothers Osborne.

The Familie

Berlin will work under Risser to sign and develop country artists and build out the genre’s division for The Familie. A University of Florida graduate, Berlin previously worked at management company The AMG and at WME.

“It’s been immediately clear to me that The Familie does things differently,” said Risser in a statement. “I appreciate the team’s non-transactional approach to management, thoughtfully building artist brands and legacies through collaboration and a vast network of cross-industry alliances. Steve Astephen could easily be the smartest, most connected person I’ve ever met and can’t wait to work alongside him in this role. I know this team will be a refreshing addition to the Nashville scene while also integrating with and honoring the history and pedigree of Music Row. I’m absolutely fired up and honored to be at the helm of The Familie’s arrival in Nashville.”

Astephen tells Billboard, “Diversity of thought and experience is what helped us transform sports representation in the 2000s and it’s what will help us do the same in music — which is essentially to not just think outside the box, but to create the box…I entered sports representation from a brand and retail perspective, then music management from a sports agency perspective. Royce has been in radio, which, of course, drives country music. He’s been in marketing and promotions. These are the types of things that add additional opportunities for an artist who signs with us. If you sign with The Familie as a musical artist, we’re looking at: How do we bring you into the sports world? How do we bring you into radio marketing? We’re not just managing an artist’s career, we’re expanding it.”

The first artist signed to the company’s country division is singer-songwriter Evanthia Theodorou.

“She’s the perfect example of the type of artist we look for, which is someone with a 360 degree brand, who is highly marketable, personable, has good values, and appeals to a wide audience through various channels of promotion,” Astephen says, estimating that the country music division could represent up to seven artists.

Astephen launched The Familie in 1998; the company also works with sports figures including football player Daniel Carlson, surfer Eli Hanneman, rally driver Oliver Solberg and tennis player Cooper Williams.

Looking ahead, Astephen says The Familie is making its move into Nashville at the perfect time. “I see the industry shifting to show how marketable the country music genre is globally,” he says. “Obviously, we have to respect what Nashville is to country music, but country artists are global superstars and only growing. So with us coming in–along with other companies–I think you’ll see more brand partnerships, more national television commercials. I’m really excited for us to be part of this and to help challenge the industry to do more than just traditional music management.”

Lizzo Was Just Happy to Be Nominated For 2023 Primetime Creative Arts Emmys for Max Special: ‘I’m Doin Shots Tonight’

Lizzo did not take home any hardware during Sunday’s (Jan. 7) second night of the 2023 Primetime Emmy Creative Arts Awards. But in a classic “just happy to be nominated” post the “About Damn Time” singer said that she was still tipping up in celebration of the honor.

“NAH IMA TALK MY S–T… OUT OF 100s OF CONCERT SPECIALS THE EMMYS CHOSE MINE FOR OUTSTANDING VARIETY SPECIAL— ITS AN HONOR TO BE NOMINATED TONIGHT WITH LEGENDS!” Lizzo wrote in an Instagram post about her 2023 HBO Max special Lizzo: Live in Concert getting a nod in the category for pre-recorded variety specials.

Lizzo thanked her “tour family” and the specials guests who appeared in the special directed by Sam Wrench (Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour) that premiered on Dec. 31, including Missy Elliott, Cardi B and SZA. “WE HAD A LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE THAT *NO ONE* CAN TAKE AWAY FROM US,” she wrote, giving props to the A-list help for making the show “EVEN EXTRA SPECIAL.” The post also included shots from the concert of Lizzo performing, as well as hugging Elliott, Cardi and SZA.

Live in Concert was bested by the NBC special Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love in the category that also included stand-up specials from Trevor Noah, Wanda Sykes and John Mulaney and a tribute to TV icon Normal Lear.

“IM DOIN SHOTS TONIGHT CUS WE ARE ALREADY WINNERS AND MORE THAN CONQUERERS?? IM TAGGING EVERYBODY IN THE PICS — I LOVE YOU, YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL, AND YOU CAN DO ANYTHING,” Lizzo added.

The awards were originally slated to take place in September, but were postponed because of the Hollywood writers and actors strikes.

Selena Gomez Kisses Benny Blanco at the Golden Globes in New Photo: ‘I Won’

Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco are awards-show official. Just days after making their first public outing as a couple at an L.A. Lakers game, the actress and producer had a glamorous date night at Sunday’s (Jan. 7) awards, where they shared a sweet kiss, as seen in an Instagram Story posted by Gomez.

In the photo, which the Only Murders in the Building actress shared shortly after the awards ceremony wrapped up, she passionately smooches Blanco in what looks to be a backstage storage area filled with cardboard boxes. She’s still wearing her crimson Giorgio Armani gown, while the pop music engineer looks dapper in a suit jacket and gold necklaces.

“I won,” Gomez captioned the snap.

The “Single Soon” musician attended the Globes as a best TV actress nominee for Only Murders alongside her costars Martin Short, Steve Martin and Meryl Streep, each of whom were also recognized for the show. Gomez gives Streep an air-kiss in what looks to be a selfie with the Oscar winner in another photo posted on her Story, to which she also posted pics with bestie Taylor Swift and Florence Pugh.

Just last week, the Rare Beauty founder embarked on her first public date with her new beau, cuddling up to him courtside at Wednesday’s (Jan. 3) Lakers game against the Miami Heat. Prior to that, both Gomez and Blanco had shared a number of photos with and of each other on their respective Instagram accounts on various dates, including one at an art exhibit believed to be the Drake-backed Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy experience.

Gomez first confirmed her relationship with Blanco in December, telling fans in a series of comments on Instagram that “he is my absolute everything in my heart.” She also revealed that, by that point, she and her “Single Soon” collaborator had been together for six months.

“This is my happiest,” she wrote at the time. “Feel free to say whatever you want. But I will never allow your words to guide my life. Ever. I’m done. If you can’t accept me at my happiest then don’t be in [my] life at all.”

8 Must-Hear New Country Songs: Willie Nelson, Charley Crockett, Brittney Spencer, Megan Moroney and More

This week’s Must-Hear New Country column features newcomers, legends and legends-in-the-making. Charley Crockett teams with Willie Nelson for a duet, while Brittney Spencer, Megan Moroney, Elvie Shane and more reliable favorites offer up stellar new releases.

Charley Crockett and Willie Nelson, “That’s What Makes the World Go Around”

Two of Texas’ most towering truth-tellers combine forces, as Crockett and the nonagenarian Red Headed Stranger team up for this sacredly country tale, which Crockett co-wrote with Kullen Fox, Rich Brotherton and Taylor Grace. Nelson’s music has been a key influence on Crockett’s own unique hybrid of styles, with Crockett having previously performed as part of Nelson’s Outlaw Music Festival. Here, the two convey the story of a woman torn between the allure of dark bars with a vibrant honky-tonk sound, and the wholesome appeal of lighthearted moments such as soaking in the joy of watching children playing outdoors. This unadorned track adeptly weaves Nelson’s distinctive voice and guitar playing with Crockett’s earthy, soulful sound.

Brittney Spencer, “Night In”

This electrifying groove makes an evening staying in with comfy clothes, good friends and favorite tunes spinning as irresistible as any dressed up night on the town. Spencer mixes up rock riffs, vivid lyrics and her nimble, captivating voice, then further heightens the fun and girl power with backing vocals from her friend and fellow singer-songwriter Maren Morris. Written by Spencer, Jessica Cayne and Summer Overstreet, with production by Daniel Tashian, this makes for an alluring preview to Spencer’s upcoming album My Stupid Life, out Jan. 19.

Elvie Shane, “What Do I Know”

Shane broke through with the tender stepfather/stepson ode “My Boy” in 2021. Since then, he’s issued songs that remind listeners of his affiliation for hard rock anthems. He continues that vision on his latest preview to his upcoming album, Damascus (out April 19). He wrote “What Do I Know” with Dan Couch, Jonathan Sherwood and Oscar Charles, with Charles producing.

Lyrically, Shane is in reflective mode, cataloging things he feels to be true, ranging from his preference for Coke mixed with Jack Daniels, a six-string guitar as the premier vessel for storytelling, and his belief that grudges mostly harm those who hold them. The production starts out more sparse than some of his previous efforts, but swiftly accelerates into his signature full-bodied, guitar-driven sound. His voice retains a world-weary edge, but it’s when the song draws to a close that he showcases the Southern rock rawness it possesses.

Tigirlily Gold, “I Tried a Ring On”

Tigirlily Gold previously earned a Country Airplay top 40 hit with the feel-good anthem “Shoot Tequila.” Here, this harmonically savvy sibling duo unearths the nuance of reticence of moving on after a relationship that once held so much hope has fizzled. The duo’s sisters, Kendra and Krista Slaubaugh, wrote the song with Josh Jenkins and Pete Good. They describe the relational aspirations held to the heart — envisioning the wedding day, the dress and all the matrimonial ceremony details — before taking the blame for not seeing the relationship for the short-lived moment that it was.

Annie Bosko, Annie Bosko EP

Bosko issues this self-titled, five-song EP, chock-full of ’90s country sounds and a stellar roster of writers contributing to the project, including Hannah Dasher, Wynn Varble, Bridgette Tatum and Trent Tomlinson. The sinewy R&B-country come-on of “Neon Baby” is superb, as the singer/songwriter sets up essentials for a romantic evening with candles and classic country tunes spinning. Meanwhile, “Boots On” is a countrified female empowerment anthem, a twangy celebration of hard-working ladies who know how to have fun when the workweek winds down. She continues her rollicking ways on “Honky Tonk Highway” and the Lainey Wilson-penned “He Gone.” Overall, Bosko’s vocal is energetic and competent, with a set of songs seemingly tailor-made for rousing live shows.

Drake Milligan, “Don’t Leave Me Loving You”

Milligan has previously gained fans through his rowdy boot-stompers such as “I Got a Problem” and “Sounds Like Something I’d Do.” But here, he artfully employs his silky, hearty twang to this pleading ballad. He knows a relationship is coming to an end, but he asks not for another chance, but rather an irrefutable certainty to its ending. “Come leave me hurt, come leave me mad/ Come leave my heart broken in half,” he sings, on this solid throwback ’90s country arrangement, crafted by Ben Stennis, Bobby Pinson and Matt Rogers.

Megan Moroney, “What Are You Listening To?

It’s a tall order for any artist to take on a song previously recorded by lion-throated singer Chris Stapleton, but “I Ain’t Pretty” singer-songwriter Moroney puts her own introspective spin on this early 2013 Stapleton release. Moroney previously released a live performance video of the song and quickly followed with this studio version. Here, Moroney eschews any attempt to replicate Stapleton’s penchant for full-throated angst, but rather wraps her elegant voice, all purr and scratch, around the lyric, drawing out more sadness and resignation than agony. Her debut album Lucky has already proven her skill as a writer — this track further evinces her skill as a vocal interpreter as well.

Shaylen, “Been There Before”

When a potential lover invites her back to his place, she turns him down, knowing his ruse makes him practically indistinguishable from suitors that have come before him. “I bet you’ll take my coat to show you’re a gentleman/ Hang it in the closet next to your skeletons,” she sings on this track that spills with specific, accusatory details, also noting a photoframe facedown in his room, a bottle of whiskey by his bedside and “dirty laundry all over the floor.” The song’s pop-country production gives off early Taylor Swift vibes at moments, but Shaylen delivers with strong, wisened confidence.
