Madonna Plays ‘Express Yourself’ For First Time on Celebration Tour

Madonna swapped a fan favorite into her set list on Monday night (Jan. 8) in Boston during the fifth act of her career-spanning Celebration concert. In the slot where she typically performs an acoustic cover of Gloria Gaynor’s 1978 disco anthem “I Will Survive,” the singer offered the audience at TD Garden a surprise unplugged run through half of her empowering 1989 Like a Prayer single “Express Yourself.”

According to fan video of the moment, Madonna raised a bottle of beer to salute 2024 with “gratitude and appreciation” before picking up an acoustic guitar and momentarily setting aside her gigantic leather cowboy hat, joking, “I have too many props… I feel like I’m in a saloon and everyone is hootin’ and hollerin’.”

She then gave thanks that she gets to perform on stage every night with her four “beautiful, talented, intelligent, opinionated children,” lamenting that her eldest, daughter Lourdes and son Rocco, have “moved on,” but that she has twin daughters Estere and Stella Ciccone on the road with her, along with older sister Mercy James and son David Banda, every night.

“I’m very grateful, because while they may need me as a mother, I must admit that I need them,” she said. “And I need you, and we need each other, cuz family isn’t just what you’re born into. Family is the family that you create. And if you feel like you’re part of my family turn the lights on your phone.”

She then sang an a cappella verse of the 1920s folk song “This Little Light of Mine” with some help from the crowd before saying that while she was telling the audience what she needs, she also wanted to share what she doesn’t need. That cued up the No. 2 Billboard Hot 100 hit about pushing away material riches in lieu of women speaking up, and out for themselves.

“You don’t need diamond rings or eighteen karat gold,” she crooned in the instantly recognizable “Express Yourself” second verse. “Fancy cars that go very fast, you know they never last, no, no/ What you need is a big strong hand/ To lift you to your higher ground/ Make you feel like a queen on a throne,” she sang while strumming her guitar and hitting the iconic chorus and the next verse, pre-chorus and chorus about never going for “second best.”

The mini performance ended with an a cappella sing-along with the crowd to the line “express what he’s got, oh baby ready or not.”

The career-spanning tour plays TD Garden again on Tuesday night (Jan. 9) before moving on to Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on Thursday (Jan. 11).

Mishaal Tamer on His Summer Tour With OneRepublic and Making the Impossible Possible

From TikTok to touring the world with the Grammy-nominated pop-rock band OneRepublic, Mishaal Tamer continues to find ways to elevate his position in the global pop pantheon. Singing in English, Arabic and Spanish while mixing guitars with a self-made modified electric oud, not to mention a poignant songwriting and performance style that is entirely his own, Mishaal represents a rising generation of trilingual pop stars that are not only bridging cultures but sonic references to create something entirely new.

Since childhood, Mishaal has been driven by making the impossible possible. When he was nine years old, Mishaal broke his arm, suffering nerve damage that would have left him handicapped had he not found the guitar. Powered by his dreams, he used the instrument as part of this physical therapy, which eventually built the foundation for his songwriting and artistry.

In 2016, Saudi Arabia saw a major turning point with the announcement of the 2030 vision, with music, art and entertainment at the forefront. During this transformative period, Mishaal emerged onto the scene, establishing his presence through his first Instagram post with a self-reflective, somber guitar clip of “Can’t Love Myself.” Producer Monty Datta later found the track, sampled and released it, propelling the track to amass almost upwards of a billion views across platforms.

2019 witnessed Mishaal’s evolution as an artist with the release of his debut music video for “Arabian Knights.” Filmed in his hometown of Jeddah, Mishaal kicked off the trilingual trend by singing in Spanish, Arabic and English, cushioned within a Spanish strummed guitar and a lo-fi beat.

Afterwards, Mishaal went on to release an outpouring of singles, culminating with his debut EP, Life’s a Ride, in 2020 through RCA Records. Driven by indie-pop and genre-bending aesthetics, heard chiefly in tracks like “Friends,” Mishaal found his voice and self-contained style of songwriting.

In this behind-the-scenes video, Mishaal explains to Billboard Arabia what it means to be a songwriter from Saudi Arabia on the brink of global stardom and the importance of dreaming big. On the tour, Mishaal also teased several singles from his forthcoming album, Home is Changing, a double entendre for undeniable progress happening in the Kingdom, but also deep within the artist. The album consists of five EPs that collectively tell a story of transformation and personal growth. Thus far, the lead singles include the self-reflective “Superman,” followed by “Disco Cowboy,” a blending of post-punk guitar lines, momentous drums and anthemic lyrics.

This notion of change is ever present in Mishaal’s work, particularly when looking at his early work and the evolution of his songwriting leading up to getting signed by Empire, and Home is Changing. It is perhaps out of his ability to embrace change that the young artist continues to rise. For example, in the process of receiving his visa in the United States, Mishaal spent many nights sleeping under a table in a recording studio in New York, unable to return home to Saudi during COVID, and instead writing through his homesickness. The outcome was a body of work that continues to flourish.

In the summer of 2023, Mishaal joined OneRepublic as the opening act on their multi-city tour across Europe, and in this video, he takes Billboard Arabia behind the scenes and through the many milestones reached along the way. The tour came after singing with Empire and co-headlining the 2022 iteration of MDLBEAST’s SoundStorm in Riyadh alongside stars like Bruno Mars, DJ Snake, Post Malone, David Guetta and more.

Building off the momentum of the tour, OneRepublic teamed up again with Mishaal in a partnership between Interscope and Ubisoft to release the track “Mirage” for the video game Assassin’s Creed Mirage. “To be featured on a song with my musical heroes, OneRepublic, that soundtracks my favorite video game, is a dream come true,” says Mishaal Tamer.

The song dropped in the lead up to the game’s release, with the lyrics co-written by Ryan Tedder, and a feature by Mishaal singing in Arabic, where both verses take inspiration from the video game. A week later, Mishaal dropped another single, “Painful Paradise,” paired with a music video made of footage from the tour with OneRepublic.

Last December, OneRepublic announced a Dubai stop on its Artificial Paradise world tour on Jan. 25, with Mishaal Tamer set to open up the stage with tracks from his new EP, The Deep. In his rapid rise to the global stage, Mishaal’s trilingual prowess and genre-blending continue to push the boundaries of indie-pop, where his lyrics echo personal and cultural growth, while his collaboration with OneRepublic heralds a new era for the artist and musicians from Saudi Arabia.

Aht aht aht. Oprah Winfrey said you will not blame her for the production woes surrounding The Color Purple movie and is over the fact people are bringing up her name in the conversation.

Spotted on Deadline, Oprah Winfrey had time to address those pesky rumors about her after Taraji P. Henson mentioned some production woes while filming the 2023 version of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight on the Golden Globes red carpet, Winfrey came with receipts after she was asked about Henson talking about the challenges she faced in Hollywood, like pay disparity and other issues like not having a personal drive to take her to and from The Color Purple set and other issues.

Winfrey, along with other big names like Stephen Spielberg, who directed the original film, and Quincy Jones, all serve as executive producers on Blitz Bazawule’s film that takes its cues from the Broadway musical, finally had something to say after trending on social media.

Per Deadline:

“I heard I was trending yesterday. People were saying I was not supporting Taraji,” Winfrey said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight at the Golden Globes. “Taraji will tell you herself that I’ve been the greatest champion of this film, championing not only the behind-the-scenes production but also everything that everybody needed.”

She continued, “Whenever I heard that there was something that people needed — I’m not in charge of the budget because that’s Warner Bros., that’s the way the studio system works and we as producers, everybody gets their salary that’s negotiated by your team.”

Winfrey reiterated that whenever she “heard there was a problem with the cars” or “with the food” she would “step in and do whatever I could to make it right,” noting that Henson “would vouch for that and say that it’s true.”

Winfrey also addressed the rumors of tension between herself and the Empire star after TikTok body language experts dissected a video of the cast and Winfrey at the Empire State Building.

“There’s no validity to their being a thing between Taraji and I,” Winfrey said.

Despite Oprah and other cast members Fantasia and Danelle Brooks clearing things up, people still have opinions.

You can see those reactions in the gallery below.

21 Savage Enlists Donald Glover, Caleb McLaughlin To Portray Him In New Film

HipHopWired Featured Video

Lil Baby & Friends Birthday Celebration

The immigration ordeal that 21 Savage endured back in 2019 leading to his arrest will get a stylistic depiction via film starring actors Donald Glover and Caleb McLaughlin. Both actors will portray 21 Savage at various stages of his life and a new trailer shows off the pair, face tattoos and all.

Stylized on YouTube as the american dream: the 21 savage story, the trailer for the film, directed by Stephen Glover, Jamal Olori, Fam Udeorji, and Luis Perez, opens with Donald Glover, donning dreadlocks, being arrested by ICE officials and hauled off to prison. As the clip progresses, Caleb McLaughlin, playing the younger version of 21, is seen facing off with the rapper inside an interrogation room, displaying 21 delivering a new song.

Further in the clip, actress Gail Bean, apparently playing a family member of 21, speaks to McLaughlin in character, and another scene shows popular social media star Druski bullying the rapper. Later in the trailer, Glover depicts in a scene how 21 arrived at his stage name while in a recording studio.

Written by Jamal Olori and Stephen Glover, the film does not yet have a release date but is created in conjunction with Lionsgate, Epic Records, and 21 Savage’s Slaughter Gang imprint. The film also stars Jabari Banks, Chad Lindberg, Victoria Pedretti, Young Mazino, and Natasha Lyonne.

One can imagine with the Glover brothers involved, the film will take twists and turns outside of a normal biopic. Check out the trailer below.

Xavi Signs With WME for Global Representation In All Areas

Mexican American artist Xavi has signed with WME for global representation in all areas, as reported by Billboard last week.

The last few months have been pivotal for the 19-year-old singer-songwriter (born Joshua Xavier Gutiérrez) who kicked off 2024 with his first No. 1 on any Billboard chart thanks to his romantic corrido “La Diabla,” which crowns the Hot Latin Songs chart dated Jan. 6. The song also currently sits at No. 2 on the Billboard Global 200 Excl. US and at No. 4 on the Billboard Global 200 chart. With “La Diabla,” Xavi made history on Spotify as the first música mexicana artist to claim the No. 1 on the Top 50 Global chart with a solo track.

Xavi has also now spent four weeks atop Billboard’s Latin Songwriters as “La Diabla” makes its rounds, and thanks to his previously-released hit singles “La Víctima,” “Poco a Poco” with Dareyes De La Sierra and “Modo DND” with Tony Aguirre — all charting on the Hot Latin Songs tally.

The Phoenix-born artist now joins a new generation of young regional Mexican hitmakers who’ve ushered a new, global era for the legacy genre currently dominating Latin presence on the Hot 100 and the global charts overall — on track with Mexican music’s exponential and global growth over the past five years.

Signed to Interscope Records, Xavi is currently working on new music and preparing for his first-ever tour, which is slated for later this year, according to WME. His management team includes Raczon Lopez and Natalia Corona.

Mel B Reflects on 30 Years of Spice Girls & Royal Mail Stamps: ‘We Feel Very Privileged’

2024 marks 30 years of the Spice Girls, and to celebrate, England is marking the occasion in a major way. Mel B appeared on the Monday (Jan. 8) episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and shared that the girl group’s three-decade anniversary comes with a special royal perk.

“It is 30 years and I just realize this because we just released our stamps from the Royal Mail. Usually it’s the queen’s face that’s on the stamp. It went from the queen, to the king and then the Spice Girls have their own stamps,” Scary Spice told the host.

Despite the stamps marking a major achievement for the 48-year-old and the rest of the Spice Girls, her children were not aware of the magnitude of the honor. “My kids are like, ‘What’s a stamp? Why do we need them?’” she joked, imitating her children’s voices. “We feel very privileged and very honored. I’m gonna save them forever and ever, amen, like all my old Spice Girl outfits that no one can touch.”

After Mel B was shown a picture of her daughter Phoenix Chi Gulzar dressed in her old Spice Girls outfits, the singer shared a bit of the history behind the looks, as well as the group’s humble beginnings. “Spice Girls, we’re very much a homegrown band. We styled ourselves and we’d do our own music,” she recalled to Fallon. “We begged producers and co-writers to work with us on the promise that when we’re rich and famous, we’d pay you back. Our journey was tough and we were broke. We dressed ourselves, so when I see that, that was 50 cents, that top.”

Elsewhere during the interview, Mel B — whose real name Melanie Brown — spoke about the series of event that led up to her receiving her MBE honor — Member of the Order of the British Empire — which she received for advocating for domestic violence victims.

“To get an MBE, they do a lot of background checks on you and it’s all about what you’ve contributed to society,” she explained. “I was thinking I’m never going to get an MBE, maybe I will as a Spice Girl because I’m a Spice Girl through and through and girl power.”

The pop star continued, “The MBE arrives in this envelope that gets chauffeur driven to your house and the chauffeur has to hand the envelope to you, but I wasn’t in, so my mum was in … she goes, ‘Oh my god you’re a royal highness! What have you’ve done?’ Then I opened it and it was like, ‘You’ve been awarded and honored an MBE for all the work and awareness that you do for domestic violence and to create support for people that have gone through that.’”

Lil Nas X Announces New Song Dedicated to Jesus Christ

Lil Nas X has announced a new song that’s dedicated to Jesus Christ along with a visual that has generated some controversy.

If there’s one thing that Lil Nas X will be able to do, it will be to cause a stir. The artist proved that again on Monday (January 8) when he announced that he was putting out a new single in a post on X, formerly Twitter in a bold way. The post contained a photo of Lil Nas X as Jesus Christ nailed to the cross, which was accompanied by the caption: “MY NEW SINGLE IS DEDICATED TO THE MAN WHO HAD THE GREATEST COMEBACK OF ALL TIME!”

The song, entitled “J Christ”, is set to debut on Friday (January 12) with a new video and likely Lil Nas X’s sophomore album. He followed it up with another post depicting him still as Jesus on the crucifix but transforming into a metallic robotic figure, with this image (rumored to be the album cover) accompanied by a website entitled “BeginningIsNear”. The announcement comes a week after a press release announcing that a documentary on the making of the rapper’s 2021 debut album Montero and the global tour that followed, Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero, will premiere on HBO on Saturday, January 27.

The release announcement was met with many on social media who stated that the “Old Town Road” musician was being blasphemous, with others of particular religious backgrounds expressing disdain for the apparent new direction in his music citing his “Satan Shoes” gimmick which earned him scorn and a lawsuit from Nike. The openly gay artist also came under fire in 2021 after the video for his song Montero showed him seducing the devil in conjunction with other biblical motifs. But many of his fans applauded the news.

Lil Nas X fired back at the critics who also knocked his “Christian Era” with another post on X. “The crazy thing is nowhere in the picture is a mockery of Jesus,” he wrote. “Jesus’s image is used throughout history in people’s art all over the world. I’m not making fun of shit. yall just gotta stop trying to gatekeep a religion that was here before any of us were even born. stfu.”

Cardi B & Offset’s Georgia Home Was Swatted Last Summer

Over the past few years, swatting has become the method of choice for MAGA cult members who look to criminally harass anyone who criticizes or in any way opposes their past, present and future king, Donald Trump.

More recent victims include Judge Tanya Chutken and Special Counsel Jack Smith, who are both involved in court cases against the Insurrectionist-In-Chief, but apparently Cardi B and Offset too were swatted last summer after someone called authorities and falsely reported an incident at their property. According to TMZ, a hater called police claiming that shots had been fired at the home that then happily wed Cardi B and Offset shared in Georgia.

Like with any other swatting incident, police took the matter seriously and rolled up to the rappers’ home ready for any kind of standoff or shootout that might’ve unfolded on the property.

Per TMZ:

One officer notes in the police report that a caller claimed someone fired a shot at a “famous rapper’s house” and even suggested Cardi herself may have been hit with a bullet … so cops came with lights and sirens, and with their firearms drawn.

Fortunately … cops say the call turned out to be BS — something officers discovered when they arrived at the property and talked to Offset’s uncle, Derrick Cephus, who said he was house-sitting. Yep, it sounds like Cardi and Offset weren’t even home for this swatting attempt …. just a confused relative!

After some back-and-forth, said relative calls up an audibly upset Offset, who was annoyed that such a situation had unfolded. Luckily, no one was hurt during the encounter.

As to why anyone would decide to swat Cardi B and Offset is anyone’s guess. Though she has been a vocal critic of Donald Trump in the past, she hasn’t touched on Cheeto Jesus in quite some time. We guess people out there just had nothing better to do than dwell on some old sh*t.

What do y’all think about the situation? Check out bodycam video of the incident below and let us know your thoughts on the situation in the comments section.

Travis Kelce Reveals the Most Famous Person in His Phone … Besides Taylor Swift, Of Course

Millions of Taylor Swift fans and the entirety of Chiefs Kingdom pretty much know exactly who the most famous person in Travis Kelce‘s contact list is. Even so, the tight end laughed off a question about the biggest celebrity in his phone and revealed which person — besides his superstar girlfriend — fits the bill.

In a video posted to the Kansas City Chiefs’ TikTok on Monday (Jan. 8), Kelce and a few of his teammates were asked to name the numbers of the most A-list stars they have saved on their phones. “You guys know the easy answer,” the Ohio native responded, heavily alluding to Swift.

Kelce went on to reveal that, second to the “Anti-Hero” singer, the biggest star in his contacts is “JT, Justin Timberlake.”

But in regards to whether the *NSYNC boy bander would pick up the phone if Kelce were to call right that second, the star said, “Not a chance.” “I appreciate you, Justin,” added the New Heights podcast host. “But he’s a busy man.”

As famous as Timberlake is, it’s hard to compare with Swift’s current celebrity status, which, if anything, has only been elevated since she started dating Kelce. The pair struck up a romance over the summer, and the 12-time Grammy winner addressed their relationship for the first time in her December TIME Person of the Year cover story.

“When you say a relationship is public, that means I’m going to see him do what he loves, we’re showing up for each other, other people are there and we don’t care,” she said in the interview. “The opposite of that is you have to go to an extreme amount of effort to make sure no one knows that you’re seeing someone. And we’re just proud of each other.”

Kelce and the Chiefs are fresh off a very close victory (13-12) against the Los Angeles Chargers following Sunday’s (Jan. 7) game. That night, Swift attended the Golden Globes alongside her good friend Keleigh Sperry.
