Declan McKenna and Noah Kahan Vie For U.K. No. 1 Album

Declan McKenna is the frontrunner for the U.K. albums chart title with What Happened To The Beach? (via Columbia), this third album.

What Happened To The Beach? leads the midweek chart, and, should it hold its position, would give the English singer-songwriter his first leader.

Whatever happens when the weekly chart is published later in the week, McKenna will have a third top 40 to his name. His 2017 debut LP What Do You Think About The Car? peaked at No. 11, and his sophomore effort from 2020, Zeros, came in at No. 2. On that occasion, the Official Charts Company notes, the Rolling Stones’ reissue of Goats Head Soup scraped through by just 800 chart units for an historic No. 1.

The nearest competitor on the current chart blast is Noah Kahan and his breakthrough third album Stick Season (Republic Records), which is roughly 3,000 combined units behind in second place – its peak position.

Stick Season’s ongoing success is fueled by the release of an expanded deluxe edition, featuring new tracks and collaborations with the likes of Sam Fender, Post Malone, Kacey Musgraves and Hozier, and, of course, its hit title track, which has led the Official U.K. Singles Chart for the past six weeks.

If there were any questions about Kanye West’s international popularity after his recent controversies, the U.K. albums chart could provide an answer. West’s collaborative album Vultures 1 (YZY) with Ty Dolla $ign finally dropped Saturday (Feb. 10), following months of delays. Based on midweek sales and streaming data, Vultures 1 is likely to swoop in at No. 3 for what would Ye’s eighth U.K. top 10 album and Ty Dolla $ign’s first.

Former Mercury Prize-winning British rapper Dizzee Rascal is eyeing a top 10 debut (and sixth overall) with Don’t Take It Personal (Big Dirte3), new at No. 6 on the Official Chart Update, while Swedish pop singer and songwriter Zara Larsson’s third album Venus (Black Butter/Sommer House) is on track for a No. 7 start, for what would be her second top 10 effort.

Meanwhile, Usher could score a top 10 touchdown following his halftime performance at the Super Bowl. The newly-married R&B star’s Coming Home (Mega Gamma) is new at No. 9 on the midweek chart and is set to become the U.S. artist’s seventh top 10 album.

Finally, Somerset, England originated prog-rock act Pineapple Thief is set to steal a career high and second top 40 appearance with It Leads To This (Kscope), new at No. 21 on the midweek tally, while Il Divo’s XX (Il Divo Music) could become the classical crossover act’s 12th Official Albums Chart top 40 appearance. It’s new at No. 35 on the chart blast.

All will be revealed when the Official U.K. Albums Chart is published late Friday, Jan. 16.

Usher Ties the Knot With Jennifer Goicoechea Following Super Bowl Performance

Usher completed an epic weekend by marrying his longtime partner Jennifer Goicoechea in Las Vegas, just hours after his performance at Super Bowl LVIII.

The pair got hitched at Vegas Weddings’ Terrace Gazebo, an outdoor wedding chapel that seats 30 guests, with Usher’s mother and former longtime manager Jonetta Patton on hand as the couple’s witness, according to an exclusive published by People.

“We can confirm that Usher and Jennifer Goicoechea took the next step in their relationship and did get married on Sunday night in Las Vegas surrounded by close friends and family,” reads a statement from Usher’s reps, People reports.

“They both look forward to continuing to raise their children together surrounded by love and thank everyone for the well wishes.”

This was no lazy Sunday for Usher.

Earlier, the 45-year-old R&B hitmaker delivered a 15-minute career-spanning set at Allegiant Stadium which saw the Grammy Award-winning singer blasting through his hits, including “Caught Up,” “Burn,” “U Got It Bad,” “Confessions Part II,” “Love In This Club,” with assistance from Alicia Keys, Will.i.am, Jermaine Dupri, H.E.R., Ludacris and Lil Jon.

Usher has a long and happy relationship with Vegas. His blockbuster halftime show dropped just a few months after closing one of the most successful and buzzed-about Sin City residencies in history, as his My Way show grossed $95.9 million.

In his Billboard cover story, Usher said his Vegas residencies enabled him to prep for a sizzling Super Bowl set. “I’ve watched every performer, analyzing how they maximized those 12 minutes,” he shared. “But you know, your moment is your moment. And this is a moment I’ve prepared for during the last 30 years.”

Usher and Goicoechea, a music industry professional, have been an item since 2019. They share two kids together — daughter Sovereign Bo Raymond and their son Sire Castrello Raymond (Usher has two sons with ex-wife Tameka Foster: Usher V and Naviyd Ely).

The MLC Sues Pandora to Recover Unpaid Royalties, Late Fees

The Mechanical Licensing Collective (The MLC) has sued Pandora for allegedly failing to adequately pay and report its monthly royalties, including in its accounting for its ad-supported tier “Pandora Free” (also known as “radio” or “free Pandora”).

In a lawsuit filed Monday (Feb. 12) in Nashville federal court, The MLC seeks to recover the royalties that Pandora allegedly owes them and all associated late fees. The MLC is particularly concerned with “unusually low royalties per stream” reported and paid out by Pandora, starting in 2021 which they say is due to the exclusion of substantial “Service Provider Revenue and TCC for Pandora Free.” (Total Content Cost or “TCC” refers to the amount paid by streaming services to record labels for the right to stream sound recordings. The TCC and Service Provider Revenue are essential to calculating the royalties due for this blanket license).

The MLC — which is tasked with administering the blanket mechanical license for musical works, created by the Music Modernization Act — also takes issue with Pandora’s lack of retroactive royalty accounting for 2021 and 2022.

In August 2023, the royalty rate for the license administered by The MLC for the years 2018-2022 was finally determined after a five year battle in which some streaming services fought to pay lower rates for music than the Copyright Royalty Board judges initially decided on. While awaiting the final rate determination, streamers, including Pandora, paid out the previous, lower royalty rate to the music business. Once the final determination was made, it set the rates higher than what the streaming services were paying previously. As a consequence, streamers were tasked to go back and retroactively pay the proper 2018-2022 rate for music.

The MLC says it “repeatedly” reminded Pandora to report its retroactive adjustments due for 2021 and 2022, and it set a deadline for Feb. 9, 2024, which it says Pandora did not reach. (The MLC did not open its doors until 2021, and thus the retroactive adjustments for 2018-2020 are not within its purview).

Pandora has made “repeated and significant underpayments of the royalties due,” says the MLC in its lawsuit.

The news comes just weeks after the MLC and its counterpart the Digital Licensee Coordinator (DLC) entered their first-ever re-designation process, a routine five year check-up to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of the two organizations. The MLC has also made headlines recently for issuing its first-ever audit of streaming services. The organization is also being audited itself by Bridgeport Music, which represents George Clinton and Funkadelic.

Lately, the music business has been fighting back against what it feels are unfair or unpaid licensing rates. Universal Music Group recently pulled its catalog from TikTok, citing the app’s inability to pay “fair value” for music. Last summer, SoundExchange, which collects and distributes performance royalties for the digital transmission of sound recordings, sued SiriusXM, which owns Pandora, for an alleged $150 million in unpaid royalties, and the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) sued Twitter for $250 million for “refusing to pay songwriters and music publishers.”

Representatives for Pandora and The MLC did not respond to Billboard’s request for comment at press time.

Jelly Roll, Peso Pluma, Lainey Wilson, Kygo & More Music Stars All Watched 2024 Super Bowl in One Place: Live Nation Field Club

After a scoreless first quarter, the 49ers’ Christian McCaffrey got the first touchdown of the 2024 Super Bowl, taking San Francisco to a 10-0 lead over Kansas City in the second quarter — and who was right there in the Niners’ end zone to cheer him on? Jelly Roll and a crowd of fellow music stars all sitting in the Live Nation Field Club.

And that was just the first half: After the Chiefs tied it up 19-19 and took the game into overtime, the A-list party got to watch Kansas City march down the field and score the Super Bowl-winning touchdown in that same end zone, directly in front of them. Tate McRae shared a video of the Chiefs’ celebration on her Instagram Story with the caption “wowwwww,” while Kygo posted a video of the game-clinching touchdown in action.

Live Nation took over the field-level suites in the north end zone of Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium and brought together some of the biggest names in music across genres and labels to all watch the game with an unbeatable view. Jelly Roll — who caught up with Billboard behind the scenes at the Super Bowl — was the Field Club’s social butterfly, seen connecting with Machine Gun Kelly, Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger, Twenty One Pilots, The Chainsmokers, Imagine Dragons’ Dan Reynolds and Kygo.

Jelly’s friend and collaborator Lainey Wilson was spotted catching up with her “wait in the truck” duet partner HARDY and also hanging out with McRae and The Kid LAROI, who in turn spent some time chatting with MGK.

Peso Pluma and Feid were seen hanging with Marco Antonio Solís, frontman for Los Bukis, who will kick off the first Spanish-language Las Vegas residency in May.

While hanging out with Bob Weir (who is about to start his own Vegas residency at Sphere with Dead & Company in May), the Chili Peppers’ Smith repped for his nearly-Super-Bowl-bound team by wearing a Detroit Lions hat in the Field Club. A couple of Billboard chart-topping duos — Josh Dunn and Tyler Joseph of Twenty One Pilots and Drew Taggart and Alex Pall of The Chainsmokers — were seen sharing a table.

Chloe and Halle Bailey filmed a TikTok from the Field Club soundtracked by Muni Long’s “Made for Me” (with the perfect opening line for the look-alike sisters: “Twin, where have you been?”).

Other stars spotted in the Live Nation Field Club: Post Malone (fresh off his Super Bowl performance of “America the Beautiful”), Travis Scott, Maren Morris, Lizzo, 21 Savage, Jared Leto, Backstreet Boys’ Kevin Richardson, Lil Nas X, H.E.R. (who was a surprise guest during Usher’s halftime show) and Zhu.

Below, find social posts from inside the Field Club, including the Bailey sisters; Jamil Davis of Revels Group alongside Scott and Pluma; and Miami nightlife entrepreneur David Grutman with Pluma, Jelly Roll and Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino.

Beyoncé Drops New Music & Announces New Album, 2024 Super Bowl With Kaskade & More | Billboard News

Beyoncé announced a follow-up album to her hit ‘Renaissance’ during Super Bowl LVIII and dropped two new tracks for her fans to enjoy. For Black History Month, Billboard is celebrating by highlighting some of the greatest Black executives in music, and today we’re celebrating Yvette Noel-Schure. 6lack reveals five things you didn’t know about him. Billboard is giving you an inside look at all the fun in Las Vegas for Super Bowl LVIII. And more!

Tetris Kelly
Beyoncé surprises us yet again at the Super Bowl as we take you to some of the game’s biggest parties. We celebrate Black History Month with one of Beyoncé’s closest confidants, hang out with 6lack, and give you this week’s Billboard Hot 100.

Tetris Kelly
It’s Monday, February 12th, aka the day after the Super Bowl. I’m Tetris Kelly and this is Billboard News. It’s Beyoncé and Taylor’s world, we just live in it — evidence presented to the court last night.

Tetris Kelly
Beyoncé will always break the internet and she did just that during the Super Bowl with a commercial and, yes, brand-new music.

Tetris Kelly
Beyoncé says “Yee-haw!” and I say where’s my cowboy hat? The queen of, well, everything partnered with Verizon for a commercial about breaking the internet. It was hilarious.

Tetris Kelly
And she delivered by announcing ‘Renaissance’ Act II is coming March 29th. And we already have two singles from the new country album. She gave us “Texas Hold’em” and “16 Carriages.”

Tetris Kelly
My thing is, Black people created dance music – Act I. Black people created country music – Act II. Is Act III gonna be rock? Well, I could speculate all day, but for now, I will say thank you, Queen, for taking ownership and doing it flawlessly.

Cinq Music Lands Another $250 Million to Fund Acquisitions

Cinq Music has raised $250 million from parent company GoDigital Media Group to fund further acquisitions of music rights, the company announced Monday (Feb. 12). This latest funding round builds on the $160 million GoDigital had previously given Cinq to build a repertoire of music rights — $20 million in August 2017, $40 million in August 2019 and $100 million in April 2022.

“It has always been our ultimate vision to amass a billion-dollar balance sheet of music rights,” Jason Peterson, chairman/CEO of GoDigital Media Group, said in a statement. “With Cinq’s continuous expansion, operational excellence, and keen ability to attract top talent, it is only natural that we would again commit to accelerating growth towards that goal.”

With a focus on Latin music and hip-hop, Cinq claims to have more than $300 million of assets under management spanning 80,000 recorded music and publishing copyrights. In recent years, the company has been a major player in the rise of Regional Mexican music and artists such as Fuerza Regida, Natanael Cano, Legado 7 and Tito Torbellino Jr. In June, the company signed a worldwide deal with Street Mob Records, the label founded by Fuerza Regida’s Jesús Ortiz Paz with a roster that includes Chino Pacas, Calle 24, Ángel Ureta, Chuy Montana and Linea Personal. Cinq has worked with Rancho Humilde, Fuerza Regida’s label, since 2018.

Earlier funding helped Cinq build out its presence in hip-hop and R&B. In 2017, Cinq bought rapper T.I.’s Atlantic Records-era recorded music catalog — including Billboard 200 No. 1 albums KingT.I. vs. TIP and Paper Trail — as Warner Music Group divested assets from its Parlophone Music Group acquisition in 2013. The following year, Cinq partnered with Janet Jackson to distribute her label, Rhythm Nation Records, and released “Made For Now,” Jackson’s collaboration with Daddy Yankee. In 2020, Cinq welcomed Jason Derulo to its roster through the acquisition of the Beluga Heights joint venture with Warner Records.

Yandel & Myke Towers’ ‘Borracho y Loco’ Leads Latin Airplay: ‘Here We Go, Another No. 1 for the Books!’

Yandel and Myke Towers celebrate a new No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart as “Borracho y Loco” crowns the list dated Feb. 17. It’s the first collaboration by two Latin rhythm acts to top the chart in 2024.

See latest videos, charts and news

It advances from the runner-up slot with 10.3 million audience impressions earned in the U.S. in the week ending Feb. 8 (up 18%), according to Luminate. It sends last week’s No. 1, Xavi’s “La Diabla” down to No. 7 after one week in charge. The latter declined 26% to 7.1 million in audience.

“The truth is that it makes me very happy that with so many years making music my songs still reach the first places and top lists in the United States and other parts of the world,” Yandel told Billboard.

As “Borracho y Loco” lands at the summit, it becomes the pair’s second No. 1 team-up. The Puerto Ricans last ruled the overall Latin Airplay ranking through a Nio Garcia, Casper Mágico, Ozuna, Wisin and Flow La Movie collab, when “Travesuras” topped the tally for one-week in 2021.

Thanks to “Borracho y Loco” Yandel scores his 16th champ on Latin Airplay. Further, he ties with Nicky Jam for the seventh-most No. 1s among male urban artists since the tally launched in 1994. Here’s a review of the winners:

36, J Balvin
33, Ozuna
28, Daddy Yankee
24, Bad Bunny
24, Maluma
22, Wisin
16, Nicky Jam
16, Yandel

“I am beyond grateful for my fans, my producers and the artists I have had the joy of collaborating with,” Yandel adds. “Now another No. 1 arrives through ‘Borracho y Loco.’ Myke Towers, thanks brother! Here we go, another No. 1 for the books!”

For Towers, the rapper and singer-songwriter lands his 10th No. 1 with his 31st chart appearance. He last topped the chart with the viral TikTok hit “Lala,” which spent two weeks at No. 1 in September 2023.

“Borracho y Loco” takes over Latin Airplay in its 18th week, marking the second-longest climb to the top for both artists. Previously, Yandel placed three songs at the summit each one in its 20th week, including two featured roles: through Maluma’s “El Perdedor,” and in IAmChino’s “Ay Dios Miío,” which also featured Pitbull and Chacal, and with “Nunca Me Olvides,” all in 2016.

Tower’s, meanwhile, secured two songs at No. 1 in 22 weeks each: “Bandido” with Juhn, and “Bésame,” with Luis Fonsi, in June and Nov. 2021, respectively.

For all chart news, you can follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on Billboard’s social accounts, and all charts (dated Feb. 17) will refresh on Billboard.com tomorrow (Feb. 13).
