BMG to Release Earliest Recordings of Flamenco Icon Paco de Lucía

BMG announced on Monday (Feb. 26) an exclusive recordings agreement with the estate of the iconic Spanish flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía. “We are delighted that these very special recordings, completely unknown until now, will finally be released with BMG on such a special date as the 10th anniversary of Paco de Lucía’s departure,” representatives of Paco de Lucía’s Estate said in a statement. “These recordings are an extraordinary document that reflects the first steps in the career of Paco de Lucía and Pepe de Lucía, and they are already part of the history of flamenco.”

According to a press release issued by BMG, the recordings — which date back to 1959 and 1960 — give flamenco fans an insight into the “early musical endeavors” of Pepe and Paco at the ages of 13 and 11, respectively. AI was used to help restore the recordings from a vintage Grundig TK46 tape recorder.

“I never thought these recordings would ever see the light of day, but thanks to the tireless work of the team that has been part of this process, the tapes have finally been restored and are ready to be released,” added Pepe. “When I listened to the tapes again, more than 60 years after their original recording, I couldn’t believe that those children were my brother Paco and me. It is a wonderful recording that brings back fond memories of the happiest time of our lives and serves as a fitting finale to our careers.”

“It has been a privilege to work hand in hand with Pepe de Lucía and the Paco de Lucía Foundation for more than a year to document, restore, and finally publish these tapes that showcase the genius of these two brothers who changed the history of music in Spain and around the world,” said Javier Doria, BMG director A&R Spain.

The deal comes on the heels of a Paco de Lucía Legacy Festival, which took place in New York from Feb. 20-24 commemorating the 10th anniversary of Paco de Lucía’s death. A historical figure in flamenco and a key figure in the globalization of the music, Paco de Lucía was honored by more than 30 flamenco artists at the four-day event.

George Michael Collectible Coin Unveiled By British Royal Mint

The British Royal Mint unveiled a new collectible coin on Monday (Feb. 26) honoring late pop icon George Michael. The tribute includes an image that recreates the look from Michael’s 1987 debut solo album, Faith, a headshot in which the star born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou rocks his signature aviator shades, crucifix pendant earring and perfect five o’clock shadow.

The coin is the latest in the Mint’s Music Legends series that has earlier paid homage to such U.K. megastars as David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, Dame Shirley Bassey, Queen and Elton John. Artist/sculptor Sandra Deiana designed the coin in honor of the WHAM! and solo star, which also features an engraving of the hook from Michael’s “Faith” single.

Michael’s estate officially approved the honor, with a statement from George Michael Entertainment reading, “On behalf of George Michael, we are deeply honoured that the Royal Mint is paying tribute to him by creating a series of beautifully crafted coins. He would have been enormously proud and genuinely touched that a national institution should have decided to pay tribute to his memory in this way.”

Artist Deiana added, “From the beginning of the project, I was clear about certain elements that I wanted to incorporate into the design. I wanted a detailed portrait that captured his charismatic expression – I was particularly thinking of his iconic sunglasses. It’s amazing to be able to pay tribute to his music and what you see in the design is truly a piece of George Michael’s song.”

The release of the coin follows December’s celebration of WHAM!’s “Last Christmas” finally reaching No. 1 on the UK charts 39 years after its initial release. The collectible is available as limited-edition precious metal poofs, including a brilliant uncirculated coin as well as silver and cold proof versions; click here for more information on the coins.

Taylor Swift Blown Away by Size of ‘Biggest’ Crowd at Final Eras Tour Show in Sydney

Taylor Swift just finished one of the most massive legs of her touring career in Australia, playing for about 600,000 fans total across seven shows in the land down under. And at her final concert in Sydney’s Accor Stadium, the 34-year-old pop star shared Monday (Feb. 26) that she was blown away by the turnout.

“Looking at this crowd, the biggest crowd we’ve had at our four shows here!” she gushed to an audience of more than 80,000 Swifties, according to local media site News.com.au. “You’re out here making me feel like I’m the first artist to play four shows at Accor Stadium!”

Swift continued to marvel at her Sydney shows later in the set. “We have had the most wonderful time, I’ve got to tell you that,” she said. “You are here in one of the most exciting cities in the world, and you chose to hang out with us. You might be wondering if we ever get tired. A three-and-a-half-hour show — I don’t know if anyone told you that, buckle up. The answer is no.”

“Here’s what happens in our last show in a city,” she added. “We have been saving our energy for you.”

Monday’s concert closes out four Eras shows at Accor, which followed Swift’s three-night stint at Melbourne’s Cricket Ground. The “Anti-Hero” singer’s Australian run featured announcements for both the “Bolter” and “Albatross” editions of her upcoming album The Tortured Poets Department, as well as several unprecedented mashups during her nightly surprise song sections. (At her finale concert in Sydney, she sang combos of “Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve” and “Ivy,” and “Forever & Always” and “Maroon.”)

Swift’s Feb. 23 show marked the first Eras concert Travis Kelce has been able to attend since November, which the 14-time Grammy winner once again celebrated by changing her “Karma” lyrics to give the Kansas City Chiefs tight end a sweet shoutout. Instead of “Karma is the guy on the screen,” she belted, “Karma is the guy on the Chiefs,” while Kelce danced along near VIP tentmates Katy Perry and Rita Ora.

Beyoncé’s ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ Hits No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100

Beyond Beyoncé on the Hot 100, Jack Harlow’s “Lovin on Me” ranks at No. 2, following six nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1. Still, it adds a sixth week atop Radio Songs and rules the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts, which use the same methodology as the Hot 100, for a 14th week each.

Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control” rebounds 5-3 on the Hot 100, after reaching No. 2; Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) and Ty Dolla $ign’s “Carnival,” featuring Rich the Kid and Playboi Carti, dips 3-4 in its second week on the chart, as Ye and Ty Dolla $ign’s collaborative album Vultures 1 spends a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart; and Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” backtracks 4-5 on the Hot 100, after hitting No. 2.

SZA’s “Snooze” rises 7-6 on the Hot 100, after reaching No. 2, as it leads the multimetric Hot R&B Songs chart for a 30th week – tying her own “Kill Bill” for the longest command by a woman; among all songs dating to the chart’s 2012 launch, only The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” has led longer (48 weeks, 2020-21).

Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” falls 6-7 on the Hot 100, following four nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 beginning in October, and Tate McRae’s “Greedy” pushes 9-8, after reaching No. 3.

Zach Bryan’s “I Remember Everything,” featuring Kacey Musgraves, slides 8-9 on the Hot 100, after it led for a week upon its debut last September. It leads the multimetric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Hot Rock Songs charts for a 26th week each.

Rounding out the Hot 100’s top 10, Doja Cat’s “Agora Hills” reenters the region (12-10), after hitting No. 7.

Beyoncé’s TikTok Takeover Proves the Platform’s Power Persists

If you don’t live under a rock, you are likely aware that Beyoncé released a pair of new songs earlier this month. One of them, “Texas Hold ‘Em,” has blanketed TikTok in recent days: Around 74,000 users had made videos incorporating the sound on February 18; this more-than-tripled over the course of a week, pushing the total number of clips using the track past 224,000 on February 25. “Texas Hold ‘Em” climbed from No. 2 to No. 1 on the latest Hot 100.

TikTok’s ability to help drive this kind of ubiquity has diminished in recent years — much to the chagrin of the music industry. “In 2019, you could catch a trend and go top five on Apple Music in like a day,” says Harrison Golding, vice president of strategic marketing at EMPIRE. “Now the platform is so mature that even if you get trends and user-generated content, the numbers may not correlate to streams.”

Trending on Billboard

And yet: “The virality of this Beyoncé record shows you the power of the platform,” says Nima Nasseri, a former vp of A&R strategy for Universal Music Group, where he worked on a team that ran TikTok campaigns for resurgent catalog hits like Trinidad Cardona’s “Dinero” and Phantogram’s “Black Out Days.” “It’s still there. You can’t discount it.” (Not that anyone was discounting it — more like lamenting the good old days when outcomes on TikTok were far easier to influence.)

The TikTok takeover of “Texas Hold ‘Em” carries extra weight because it feels like a potent reminder of the platform’s impact at a time when the music industry is eager to look for alternatives. Licensing negotiations between Universal Music Group and TikTok fell apart in January, which means that no official sounds from UMG artists have been available on the platform during February. And whenever TikTok faces a potential obstacle — U.S. politicians threaten to ban it, for example, or a massive song catalog is removed — music industry attention turns to Instagram and YouTube, which also have their own short-form video delivery systems (Reels and Shorts, respectively).

It’s possible that more music will come down from TikTok at the end of February — not just tracks by UMG’s artists, but also any songs that include contributions from Universal Music Publishing Group’s songwriters. It makes sense, then, that “artists and their teams are putting more strategy into all three platforms now,” according to Jen Darmafall, director of marketing for ATG Group. “Before, they would just make content that works for TikTok and then post it on the other platforms.”

Although recent history is littered with songs that exploded on TikTok and saw a correlated jump on streaming services, it’s always been much harder to find comparable examples associated with Reels and Shorts. “Reels is more self-contained,” Nasseri explains. “You can get 100,000 uses of a sound on Reels, and that won’t impact” plays on streaming services.

Historically, success on Reels creates “more of a passive following,” adds Ben Locke, director of A&R and marketing at the label Disharmony.

When it comes to Shorts, Golding includes it in all his rollouts, as do most music marketers. “Is it changing a record like TikTok can?” he asks. “No, not yet.”

Nasseri agrees: “You don’t see creates grow at the same rate on YouTube Shorts as they do on TikTok.” (Neal Mohan, YouTube’s CEO, recently wrote on the company’s blog that “Shorts is averaging over 70 billion daily views, and the number of channels uploading Shorts has grown 50% year over year.”)

This all makes the recent success of Sawyer Hill’s “Look at the Time” that much more noteworthy: The song topped Spotify’s Viral 50 chart in the U.S. last week thanks in large part to listeners coming from Reels. “I’ve never seen virality from Reels like this that drove consumption in a meaningful way,” says Locke, who signed Sawyer Hill to Disharmony.

Locke actually found Sawyer Hill on TikTok (of course) late in 2022; “Look at the Time,” a parched power ballad riddled with reproachful guitar riffs, came out in June 2023. In the past few months, Locke says, Sawyer Hill “pivoted his strategy more to Reels, because he felt like there was less of an over-saturation of music on that platform.”

And recently, Locke continues, “his content is starting to get a ton of engagement.” The top comment on Sawyer Hill’s “Look at the Time” YouTube video is “Instagram brought me here, I’m glad the algorithm showed me this gem.” The second comment is more amusing — and more revealing: “Usually the songs that are advertised on insta SUCK but this is actually gorgeous.”

Tommy Kiljoy, who manages ThxSoMch, calls the success of “Look at the Time” “a major win for Instagram.” The platform “is still a little bit weird — you get more followers than engagement,” he says. But ThxSoMch’s latest single “Hide Your Kids” also recently enjoyed a boost from Reels. (Sawyer Hill and ThxSoMch are not signed to UMG labels, so their music is currently available on TikTok as well.)

It’s too early to know if this activity on Reels is an aberration or the start of a trend. On Friday, “Look at the Time” enjoyed its fifth day at No. 1 on Spotify’s U.S. Viral 50. Sitting nearby at No. 3 was Djo’s “End of Beginning.” Unlike Sawyer Hill, though, Djo’s success can be attributed directly to TikTok users, who have embraced the 2022 song in droves.

This just goes to show, “in the digital space, no one has the formula right now,” as Golding puts it. “We’re constantly trying to figure out what type of campaign is going to actually convert a new fan. It’s a few drops in a bucket here, a few drops there, and hope you catch a viral moment.”

Drake Appears to Call for Tory Lanez’s Freedom in Megan Thee Stallion Shooting Case Amid Latest Appeal

Drake has his fellow Canadian crooner’s back, and appeared to voice his support for Tory Lanez in the Megan Thee Stallion shooting case.

The 6 God took to his Instagram Story on Monday (Feb. 26), seemingly calling for Lanez’s freedom with a photo of the incarcerated singer, which he captioned: “3 you.”

It’s possible Drake used the “3” to rhyme with “free,” while also having the numeral signify broken handcuffs. The 6 God and Tory previously had beef in the earlier portions of their careers, but came together and squashed the feud in 2017.

Lanez is still awaiting yet another ruling in his latest appeal attempt after being sentenced to 10 years behind bars in August for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the foot.

He was convicted in December 2022 on charges of assault with an automatic firearm, carrying an unregistered loaded firearm in a vehicle as well as discharge of a firearm with gross negligence.

Billboard has reached out to Drake and Megan Thee Stallion’s reps for comment.

Per legal reporter Meghan Cuniff, Lanez — born Daystar Peterson — filed a habeas petition seeking re-sentencing in December, citing statements from his former bodyguard and driver, who didn’t testify during the highly publicized trial.

Drake has had an icy past with Megan Thee Stallion, as some fans believed he took shots at the Houston Hottie on 2022’s Her Loss track “Circo Loco” when rapping, “This b—h lie ’bout getting shots, but she still a stallion/ She don’t even get the joke/ But she still smiling.”

Thee Stallion then appeared to respond indirectly to the OVO boss by calling out “lame rap n—-s.”

“Stop using my shooting for clout b–h ass N—-s! Since when tf is it cool to joke abt women getting shot ! You n—-s especially RAP N—-S ARE LAME! Ready to boycott bout shoes and clothes but dog pile on a black woman when she say one of y’all homeboys abused her,” she tweeted in November 2022. “People attack me y’all go up for it , i defend myself now I’m doing too much … every time it never ends and this did NOT happen until I came out and said I got shot … y’all don’t fwm okay cool f–k it bye.”

“Hello GMA. Sorry I can’t be there. I’ve come down with something and I completely lost my voice,” she said in a hoarse, thin voice in which she could barely be heard. “But I hope you guys have a beautiful morning and hope you enjoy Dune: Part Two.”

The morning show appreciated the gesture, re-posting the clip on social media along with the message, “How sweet is @zendaya to send us this video? We’ll miss you tomorrow and hope you feel better soon!”

At press time Zendaya had not revealed any additional information on what is ailing her or if she would come back to GMA to promote the film at a later date.

Earlier on Sunday, Zendaya was on hand for the New York premiere of the Dune sequel along with co-stars Timothée Chalamet, Josh Brolin, Florence Pugh and Austin Butler. Zendaya has been on a global jaunt to promote the second part of the Denis Villeneuve-directed sci-fi epic that will open in U.S. theaters on Friday (March 1), in which she plays Chani, a young Fremen warrior in love with Chalamet’s Paul Atreides. The film based on Frank Herbert’s beloved 1965 novel also features Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Stellan Skarsgård, Charlotte Rampling, Javier Bardem and Léa Seydoux.

Lil Baby & Friends Birthday Celebration Concert

Drake is getting blasted on X, formerly Twitter, for showing online support for the currently incarcerated Tory Lanez. In an Instagram Story post, Drake calls for the freedom of Tory Lanez which has sparked a barrage of online criticism.

Drake, 37, shared an image of Tory Lanez to his Story feed with the words under the photo reading “3 You,” which many assume to be suggesting freedom for Lanez. Lanez, 31, was found guilty in 2022 of felony assault for shooting and injuring Megan Thee Stallion. In August of 2023, Lanez was officially sentenced to 10 years behind bars in connection to the matter.

Several Hip-Hop figures and fans on social media seemed to side with Lanez during his legal ordeal with Megan Thee Stallion, with many believing that the shooting incident never took place among other unproven yet heavily discussed theories.

There have also been shots taken via songs towards Megan Thee Stallion, including a perceived shot from Drake on the song “Circo Loco” from his joint album with 21 Savage, Her Loss. However, 21 Savage claims that the Canadian superstar was not pointing his verse in that direction.

Despite that clarification from the Atlanta rapper, some believe that Drizzy holds some manner of animosity towards women rappers and that his support of Tory Lanez qualifies those assumptions. We’ve got reactions from X below.

Olivia Rodrigo Kicks Off Her Fund 4 Good to Benefit Reproductive Rights on Guts World Tour

It takes guts to stand up for important causes, but Olivia Rodrigo is as gutsy as they come. Shortly before taking the stage at Acrisure Arena in Palm Springs, Calif., for the opening night of her Guts World Tour Friday (Feb. 23), the 21-year-old pop star marked the launch of her Fund 4 Good supporting reproductive rights with a video on social media.

Sitting backstage with her glittery show makeup already on, Rodrigo took a moment to talk to fans about her initiative. “Before I pop onstage, I wanted to come on here and talk about something I’m really excited about,” she told the camera. “The Fund 4 Good works to support all women, girls and people seeking reproductive health freedom.”

“The fund will directly support community-based nonprofits that champion things like girls’ education, support reproductive rights and prevent gender-based violence,” continued the “Vampire” singer, noting that Fund 4 Good tables with resources for fans will be set up at all of her Guts tour stops.

Rodrigo also reminded fans that a portion of the proceeds from her ticket sales will go toward the Fund 4 Good, as well as the National Network of Abortion Funds in North America. “Thank you so much for supporting this cause that I care so deeply about,” she added. “I can’t wait to see you all on tour.”

The former Disney star went on Friday night to deliver an energetic pop-punk performance featuring songs from both her 2021 debut album Sour and her 2023 sophomore effort Guts. The next day, she brought her show to Footprint Center in Phoenix.

Rodrigo has long been vocal about her support for women’s health issues. In June 2022, she blasted the Supreme Court for overturning Roe v. Wade during her Glastonbury set before performing “F–k You” with Lily Allen. “I’m devastated and terrified that so many women and so many girls are going to die because of this,” she said in front of thousands of festivalgoers.

She added at the time, “I wanted to dedicate this next song to the five members of the Supreme Court who have showed us that at the end of the day, they truly don’t give a s—t about freedom.”
