Nicki Nicole Headlines First Billboard Spanish-Language Music Forum in Madrid

Managers, record label executives and artists — including icon Raphael, Luis Cobos, La Mala Rodríguez, Paula Cendejas, Yotuel and Maikel Delacalle — participated in a series of conversations and panels as part of the first Forum on Spanish Language Music in Madrid presented by the Community of Madrid and powered by Billboard.

The one day, invite-only event — attended by some 500 artists, managers and industry execs — sought to highlight the growing consumption of music in Spanish across continents, and featured four panel conversations, as well as a Q&A and performance by Argentine superstar Nicki Nicole.

The singer, who made history as the first urban female artist to both enter and top Billboard Argentina’s Hot 100 chart, just finished a round of nine sold-out arena dates in her native Buenos Aires, and will perform her first sold out 15,000-seat WiZink Center in Madrid on March 21. She is also this month’s Billboard Español cover star.

Nicki Nicole’s status as an artist who rose to popularity in her native Argentina but is now selling out arenas worldwide highlighted the forum’s focus on the new generation of cross-continent, cross-genre, cross-focus Latin acts who are now dominating the charts and the fact that Madrid is an epicenter of that fluidity.

“Spain fully embraces its role as part of a new Latin music movement,” said Jorge “Pepo” Ferradas, who manages Colombian artist Camilo and Spanish artist Rels B, both of whom have had success on opposite sides of the Atlantic.

Ferradas was part of an opening powerhouse panel that also featured Walter Kolm, founder of WK Entertainment and manager of Maluma and Carlos Vives, among others; Fede Lauria, founder of Dale Play Records and manager of Bizarrap and Nicki Nicole; Alex Gallardo, president of Sony Music U.S. Latin; and Rosa Lagarrigue, founder of RLM Entertainment and manager of Rozalen and Raphael.

It was followed by a one-on-one conversation with Spanish icon Raphael, who at 80 years old said he had no plans to retire. “I don’t see myself in the role of not doing anything,” he deadpanned.

Then, artists La Mala Rodríguez, Yotuel, Maikel Delacalle and Paula Cendejas sat down for an animated discussion on the current state of music, followed by an interview with venerable conductor Luis Cobos, president of the newly minted Spanish Academy of Music, which is slated to host its first ever award show later this Spring.

The day’s grand finale was a surprisingly candid and intimate conversation with Billboard Español cover star Nicki Nicole, who opened up about how she catalyzes her personal experiences in music and also revealed she will soon release a new single with another Spanish icon, Alejandro Sanz.

Nicki also performed a set of six songs in a new semi-acoustic, lo-fi  format with the singer backed by a keyboard, drums and guitar, highlighting vocals that have become sultrier and broader ranging.

The forum opened on Tuesday afternoon with a welcome from Billboard’s chief content officer for Latin/Español Leila Cobo, and Mariano de Paco Serrano, Madrid’s minister of culture, tourism and sports, who underscored the importance of music to the city and its role in “fostering talent and the industry.”

When Artists Tour, Their Streaming Numbers Increase. Which Genres See the Biggest Gains?

2023 was a banner year for live events, with grosses from the top 100 tours up 53% from 2019, the last full year before the pandemic, according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore. But beyond these record-breaking earnings, concerts also affect artists’ recorded music consumption, spurring local boosts as they tour the country.

Luminate and Billboard collaborated to dig deeper into touring’s effect on streaming totals. Examining a sample of nearly 1,000 shows from 50 of 2023’s top-grossing acts, the analysis found that the median concert yielded a 42% increase in local on-demand audio streams during the week of each event as compared to the eight weeks prior.

Of course, the size of the bump varies by artist. There’s a spectrum of effects, from Odesza doubling its local consumption after an average concert (+143%) to Blake Shelton‘s bump coming in slightly below the overall median (+32%).

But one of the defining factors in how big of a local streaming bump an artist receives is genre. Fan bases across pop, rock, country and beyond boast their own demographic and geographic characteristics, and as a result, their consumption habits vary widely.

Some of the biggest boosts in local consumption are reserved for the dance/electronic acts included in this analysis. The genre’s live footprint is often tied to festivals or nightclubs, meaning few of its marquee acts tour in the traditional sense. When they do play ticketed headline shows, in many cases those concerts amount to mini residencies in particular pockets of the country.

Pretty Lights exemplifies this phenomenon. When the producer played three shows in two Colorado markets — plus three each in Atlanta and Philadelphia — last year, his local streams averaged a 132% bump. And shows played by LCD Soundsystem during the group’s 20-date residency at New York City’s Brooklyn Steel translated to a 125% jump in its New York-area streams, which sustained throughout the residency’s duration.

K-pop acts function in a similar way. In the United States, K-pop is a relatively young genre that has firmly established itself in only a handful of markets. SUGA and TOMORROW X TOGETHER each played a small number of American cities on tour in 2023, with both hitting New York and Los Angeles as well as cities like Atlanta, Chicago, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Similar to dance acts, SUGA and TOMORROW X TOGETHER enjoyed local weekly streaming gains of 133% and 129%, respectively — roughly three times higher than the average touring artist.

In stark contrast, R&B/hip-hop acts see comparatively small upticks in their local streaming activity after concerts. For much of the last decade, R&B/hip-hop has been the most popular genre in America, and its rise coincided with the dawn of the streaming era. For these artists, sky-high streaming activity tends to be a baseline, so adding a concert to the mix doesn’t yield the same growth rates.

Still, tours by Drake, 50 Cent and J.I.D. & SMINO generated local weekly boosts of 28%-34% — far less than K-pop or dance/electronic artists and below the 42% average, but a material increase across lengthy national tours nonetheless.

Local streaming increases for the country genre also tend to be slightly below average, with the size of the increases often dependent upon how long the acts have been around. Little Big Town and Blake Shelton, both of which began their careers in the early 2000s, post typical post-show gains of 36% and 32%, respectively. Jelly Roll and Morgan Wallen, both of whom scored the biggest hits of their careers last year, sit lower at 18%.

Jelly Roll and Wallen have led a new class of crossover country stars who have enjoyed more success on the Billboard Hot 100 and Streaming Songs charts than the genre has seen in years. Much of that success is owed to a more focused digital footprint, with robust activity across social media and streaming platforms compared to acts like Shelton and Little Big Town, who rose to fame in the CD era. That positions them closer to hip-hop acts who boast higher consumption figures on streaming platforms than older artists, therefore giving them less room to grow.

Of course, many artists cross genre lines or operate within sub-genres or different sects of genres, blurring its effects. The Jonas Brothers, a pop band that blossomed in the 2000s and reunited five years ago, typically see massive local streaming increases, with the group averaging a 129% boost following last year’s shows. RBD, a Latin pop vocal group with a similar timeline as the JoBros, demonstrated even bigger local streaming gains, which were up an average of 285% following dates on the band’s reunion tour last year. This pattern continues with tours by Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block (172%), suggesting that classic pop acts are perhaps the biggest benefactors in terms of streaming numbers when they go on tour.

Speaking of reunions, last year also marked the 20th anniversary of landmark records by Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service, both of which are the brainchildren of indie-rock stalwart Ben Gibbard. Both acts, fronted by Gibbard, returned to the stage in 2023 to co-headline the Give Up & Transatlanticism 20th Anniversary Tour. During that run, their local streams bloomed by 195% — a number outdone only by RBD among the 50 artists in the analysis.

Dr. Dre Honored with Star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame

Dr. Dre is having a great week after the legendary producer had a star placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, sharing the moment with some of his famous pals. Speaking of those friends, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and 50 Cent joined Dre in a hilarious skit spoofing Grey’s Anatomy.

During Tuesday’s (March 19) airing of Jimmy Kimmel Live, Dr. Dre appears in the spoof of the long-running ABC drama, Grey’s Anatomy titled “Dre’s Anatomy” with the artist born Andre Young in the role of an emergency room doctor.

Dre, Snoop, and Fif all take turns examining Kimmel’s “situation” down below and the most amazing thing about the skit is that nobody breaks character during it all.

After the skit turns into an all-out party with Dre on the beat machine and Snoop taking hits of a mysterious vapor, the skit cuts to a break and teases a new show titled “EM” with Eminem.

The quartet were all on hand this week for Dre’s Hollywood Walk of Fame unveiling, displaying their close friendship and support of one another.

Check out Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and 50 Cent in the “Dre’s Anatomy” skit via Jimmy Kimmel Live below. And we’ll echo the sentiments of others to say this needs to be a real series.

Jimmie Allen Confirms He Had Twins With Another Woman in Midst of Divorce From Ex Alexis Gale

Jimmie Allen confirmed this week that he had twins with an unnamed woman in the midst of his divorce from ex-wife Alexis Gale. The 38-year-old “Best Shot” singer posted a series of Instagram Stories on Tuesday (March 19) according to E! News, in which he paid tribute to his children, Aadyn, 9 (from a previous relationship), as well as Naomi, 4, Zara, 2 and Cohen, 5 months, with Gale and 9-month-old twins Amari and Aria.

In a caption, Allen also pre-empted criticism about his family tree, writing,  “I have 6 kids. I love each one of them. I refuse to let anyone make me feel ashamed of any of my children. The only opinion I care about is theirs.”

Estranged wife Gale appeared to respond to the post a short time later on her private Instagram — though she didn’t name Allen — writing in a Story, “I’m just going to say, those lies will always catch up to you. What is done in the dark will come out in the light every single time. So keep playing.” Gale added, “I am truly at the point in my life where I am just letting God work and not saying s–t anymore. People tell on themselves, they show you who they are, they always expose themselves. You don’t have to do a single thing, ever. Something always comes out and it just happens naturally.”

Allen and Gale married in 2021 after two years of dating and in April 2023 Gale shared a message that announced both her pregnancy and the couple’s separation. “After much thought and reflection in recent months, Lex & I have made the decision to separate,” they wrote. “As we navigate this life change, we can also share that we will be welcoming another child together later this year.”

A month later, Allen issued a public apology to Alexis, saying he was sorry for “humiliating her with my affair. I’m embarrassed that my choices have brought shame to her. That’s something that she did not deserve at all.” The apology was followed in July with the birth of twins with the unnamed woman, according to People. Allen and Alexis’ son, Cohen, was born in September and a spokesperson for the singer told people in October that the couple had reconciled and “decided to work on things together and are still together.”

Why Voice-Swap Wants to Be an ‘Agency’ for Artists’ AI Voices

There is no shortage of AI voice synthesis companies on the market today, but Voice-Swap, founded and led by Dan “DJ Fresh” Stein, is trying to reimagine what these companies can be.

The music producer and technologist intends Voice-Swap to act as not just a simple conversion tool but an “agency” for artists’ AI likenesses. He’s also looking to solve the ongoing question of how to monetize these voice models in a way that gets the most money back to the artists — a hotly contested topic since anonymous TikTok user Ghostwriter employed AI renderings of Drake and The Weeknd‘s voices without their permission on the viral song “Heart On My Sleeve.”

In an exclusive interview with Billboard, Stein and Michael Pelczynski, a member of the company’s advisory board and former vp at SoundCloud, explain their business goals as well as their new monetization plan, which includes providing a dividend for participating artists and payment to artists every time a user employs their AI voice — not just when the resulting song is released commercially and streamed on DSPs. The company also reveals that it’s working on a new partnership with Imogen Heap to create her voice model, which will arrive this summer.

Trending on Billboard

Voice-Swap sees the voice as the “new real estate of IP,” as Pelczynski puts it — just another form of ownership that can allow a participating artist to make passive income. (The voice, along with one’s name and likeness, is considered a “right of publicity” which is currently regulated differently state-to-state.)

In addition to seeing AI voice technology as a useful tool to engage fans of notable artists like Heap and make translations of songs, the Voice-Swap team also believes AI voices represent a major opportunity for session vocalists with distinct timbres but lower public profiles to earn additional income. On its platform now, the company has a number of session vocalists of varying vocal styles available for use; Voice-Swap sees session vocalists’ AI voice models as potentially valuable to songwriters and producers who may want to shape-shift those voices during writing and recording sessions. (As Billboard reported in August, using AI voice models to better tailor pitch records to artists has become a common use-case for the emerging technology.)

“We like to think that, much like a record label, we have a brand that we want to build with the style of artists and the quality we represent at Voice-Swap,” says Stein. “It doesn’t have to be a specific genre, but it’s about hosting unique and incredible voices as opposed to [just popular artists].”

Last year, we saw a lot of fear and excitement surrounding this technology as Ghostwriter appeared on social media and Grimes introduced her own voice model soon after. How does your approach compare to these examples?

Pelczynski: This technology did stoke a lot of fear at first. This is because people see it as a magic trick. When you don’t know what’s behind it and you just see the end result and wonder how it just did that, there is wonder and fear that comes. [There is now the risk] that if you don’t work with someone you trust on your vocal rights, someone is going to pick up that magic trick and do it without you. That’s what happened with Ghostwriter and many others.

The one real main thing to emphasize is the magic trick of swapping a voice isn’t where the story ends, it’s where it begins. And I think Grimes in particular is approaching it with an intent to empower artists. We are, too. But I think where we differentiate is the revenue stream part. With the Grimes model, you create what you want to create and then the song goes into the traditional ecosystem of streaming and other ways of consuming music. That’s where the royalties are made off of that.

We are focused on the inference. Our voice artists get paid on the actual conversion of the voice. Not all of these uses of AI voices end up on streaming, so this is important to us. Of course, if the song is released, additional money for the voice can be made then, too. As far as we know, we are the first platform to pay royalties on the inference, the first conversion.

Stein: We also allow artists the right to release their results through any distributor they want. [Grimes’ model is partnered exclusively with TuneCore.] We see ourselves a bit like an agency for artists’ voices.

What do you mean by an “agency” for artists’ voices?

Stein: When we work with an artist at Voice-Swap we intend to represent them and license their voice models created with us to other platforms to increase their opportunities to earn income. It’s like working with an agent to manage your live bookings. We want to be the agent for the artists’ AI presence and help them monetize it on multiple platforms but always with their personal preferences and concerns in mind.

What kinds of platforms would be interested in licensing an AI voice model from Voice-Swap?

Stein: It is early days for all of the possible use cases, but we think the most obvious example at the moment is music production platforms [or DAWs, short for digital audio workstation] that want to use voice models in their products.

There are two approaches you can take [as an AI voice company.] We could say we are a SaaS platform, and the artist can do deals with other platforms themselves. But the way we approach this is we put a lot of focus into the quality of our models and working with artists directly to keep improving it. We want to be the one-stop solution for creating a model the artist is proud of.

I think the whole thing with AI and where this technology is going is that none of us know what it’s going to be doing 10 years from now. So for us, this was also about getting into a place where we can build that credibility in those relationships and not just with the artists. We want to work with labels, too.

Do you have any partnerships with DAWs or other music-making platforms in place already?

Pelczynski: We are in discussions and under NDA pending an announcement. Every creator’s workflow is different — we want our users to have access to our roster of voices wherever they feel most comfortable, be that via the website, in a DAW or elsewhere. That’s why we’re exploring these partnerships, and why we’ve designed our upcoming VST [virtual studio technology] to make that experience even more seamless. We also recently announced a partnership with SoundCloud, with deeper integrations aimed at creators forthcoming.

Ultimately, the more places our voices are available, the more opportunities there are for new revenue for the artists, and that’s our priority.

Can some music editing take place on the Voice-Swap website, or do these converted voices need to be exported?

Pelczynski: Yes, Dan has always wanted to architect a VST so that it can act like a plug-in in someone’s DAW, but we also have the capability of letting users edit and do the voice conversion and some music editing on our website using our product Stem-Swap. That’s an amazing playground for people that are just coming up. It is similar to how BandLab and others are a good quick way to experiment with music creation.

How many users does Voice-Swap have?

Pelczynski: We have 140,000 verified unique users, and counting.

Can you break down the specifics of how much your site costs for users?

Pelczynski: We run a subscription and top-up pricing system. Users pay a monthly or one-off fee and receive audio credits. Credits are then used for voice conversion and stem separation, with more creator tools on the way.

How did your team get connected with Imogen Heap, and given all the competitors in the AI voice space today, why do you think she picked Voice-Swap?

Pelczynski: We’re very excited to be working with her. She’s one of many established artists that we’re working on currently in the pipeline, and I think our partnership comes down to our ethos of trust and consent. I know it sounds trite, but I think it’s absolutely one of the cornerstones to our success.

The “Savage” rapper announced the tour last week with a provocative teaser poster in which she was spotted lounging on her stomach in a pool in a skimpy thong bikini, an image so hot that it was reportedly flagged by Instagram for being too sexy for public consumption. “Nooooo it’s just a lil cheek lol,” Megan reportedly commented on the news.

Megan is enjoying a strong 2024, which included hoisting a Hot 100 No. 1 single with “Hiss.” She will look to continue her fiery run with an upcoming album slated for later this year. She previewed new music last year with 41’s Kyle Richh.

As for Glorilla, she’s having a fruitful campaign this year, as well after the rise of her single “Yeah Glo!” This week, the CMG upstart visited the White House and met President Joe Biden at a Women’s History Month Reception. The meet-up with Biden comes after Glo met Pittsburg Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin late last year. Following that exchange, she received a co-sign from LeBron James for “Yeah Glo!”.
