Just a day after receiving the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts by the King and Queen of Spain, Jesús López, chairman/CEO of Universal Music Latin America and Iberian Peninsula, was celebrated by his colleagues and the artists he’s worked closely in his 45 years in the industry. The private ceremony, held April 4, included performances by Universal Music artists including David Bisbal, Rosario Flores, Joaquina and Lola Índigo, among others.

“Becoming the first Spanish record executive to receive this recognition has a double meaning for me, on the one hand the personal and family pride and gratitude and on the other hand that the work of so many record executives is rewarded by the Spanish cultural world,” López previously said in a statement after receiving the medal. “I thank all the artists, composers, producers and colleagues in the different labels I have worked with and continue to work with for their support and care, without them this recognition would never have been a reality.”

Spotify Shares Jump 18% on Pending Price Increases, New CFO Hire

Shares of Spotify jumped 17.6% to $310.31 this week on a report that the streaming giant will raise prices again in select markets as well as news that it named a new CFO, Christian Luiga, a former CFO and deputy CEO at European defense and security company Saab AB.

Spotify’s newfound willingness to both raise prices and control costs has given new life to its stock price after an expensive entry into podcasting caused a downturn in 2022. Through Friday (April 5), shares of Spotify have increased 65.2% year to date and 134.2% over the past 12 months. Not even Believe, up 57.1% in 2024 thanks to competing interests to acquire the company, has matched Spotify’s momentum this year. Sphere Entertainment has also enjoyed a boost on Wall Street since U2’s inaugural residency at the $2.3-billion Las Vegas venue, but its 37.7% gain in 2024 also lags behind Spotify.

For more than a decade, Spotify kept its subscription prices low and emphasized subscriber growth over profits. The market’s mood has shifted in recent years, though. Once satisfied with growth in user numbers, investors now want high-flying streaming companies to be profitable, too. Since Spotify announced a price increase on July 24, 2023, the share price has increased 89.5% and raised the company’s market capitalization by roughly $29 billion to $61.5 billion. The share price has gone up 71.7% since Spotify announced it would cut 16% of its staff on Dec. 4, 2023.

Trending on Billboard

This week, investors reacted to a Bloomberg report that Spotify is raising subscription prices in select markets and will pass another rate hike in the United States later this year. Following the news, Spotify gained 8.2% to $291.77 on Wednesday (April 3). Labels appeared to benefit, too: Universal Music Group rose 5.5% and Warner Music Group gained 5.8% on Wednesday following news of the price increase.

Rather than shy away from price increases in successive years, Spotify could have a unique ability to withstand higher prices compared to its peers. Morgan Stanley analysts wrote in an investor note on Thursday (April 4) that music is “broadly under-monetized” and the quality of Spotify’s product gives it “unique pricing power.” Guggenheim analysts wrote in a report on Wednesday that they believe the price increase could mean a “9% revenue impact” in the affected markets.

What’s more, the higher prices could help Spotify by improving its audiobook business. Spotify now gives subscribers in the United States and some other markets 15 hours of free audiobook streaming per month; users can also purchase additional listening time and buy audiobooks to keep. A recent Morgan Stanley survey revealed Spotify was used by 38% of audiobook listeners, second only to veteran audiobook platform Audible despite Spotify having launched audiobooks only a few months before the survey. “Audiobooks appear to be perhaps a larger revenue opportunity than podcasting based on this survey works and long-standing consumer price points for books,” Morgan Stanley analysts wrote.

The Billboard Global Music Index dropped 0.2% to 1,748.38 as nine of the index’s 20 stocks were winners, 10 were losers and one was unchanged. No company other than Spotify posted a double-digit increase, however, and three companies — iHeartMedia, Cumulus Media and Anghami — had double-digit declines.

Stocks were mixed globally this week. In the United States, the Nasdaq composite dropped 0.8% to 16,248.52 and the S&P 500 fell 1.0% to 5,204.34. The United Kingdom’s FTSE 100 fell 0.5% to 7,911.16. China’s Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.9% to 3,069.30. South Korea’s KOSPI composite index lost 1.2% to 2,714.21.

Music streaming company Anghami (NASDAQ: ANGH) was the biggest loser of the week after dropping 41.1% — it lost 44.5% on Wednesday alone — after OSN Group, a premium entertainment provider for the Middle East-North Africa region, acquired a 55.45% stake. The deal, first announced in November 2023, combines the Abu Dhabi on-demand music streaming service with a paid, on-demand video streaming platform that carries both Arabic and Turkish titles and content from Western brands such as HBO, Universal Pictures and Paramount.

Blink-182 Cancels 3 Mexico City Shows ‘Due to Illness’

Blink-182 fans in Mexico held on to hope that the rock band’s bassist, Mark Hoppus, could overcome his health problems and perform the concerts scheduled for this weekend in the capital city. However, the medical diagnosis said otherwise and the cancellation was inevitable: Out of a total of four performances, they were only able to offer one.

“Dear fans, sadly, Blink-182 shows on April 5 and 6 at Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City have been cancelled due to illness,” said promoter Ocesa in a statement on Friday (April 5), two days after the trio also comprised by Tom DeLonge (vocals and guitar) and Travis Barker (drums), had already canceled one performance after offering an energetic show the previous night (April 2) at the same venue, which represented their long-awaited return to the country after a 20-year absence.

“We don’t take canceling lightly. We know people booked flights, hotels, made plans, got babysitters… We had multiple lengthy discussions all morning within the band, with promoters, managers. We tried moving the date, tried every possible solution, but this is the reality. We appreciate your understanding and support,” Hoppus wrote on his Discord account on Wednesday.

“For me and my illness, I have seen a doctor here and talked to my doctor back home. I am on multiple medications and have been in bed the past three days except to go to the show, and yesterday I was hoping it was just allergies… Saw docs, was told I had an acute infection in my throat and severe bronchitis. Got on meds immediately with the kind help of the local promoters and have been on treatment,” added the bassist, who fought a battle with cancer in 2021.

Promoter Ocesa said in a statement on Friday that refunds will be issued to ticket-holders of the cancelled shows. They said that for users who bought tickets online the refund will automatically be refunded on the card with which the purchase was made. If the purchase was made at the box office or Ticketmaster centers, refunds can be requested starting Monday (April 8) at the place of purchase.

In mid-2021, Hoppus revealed that he had been diagnosed with lymphoma. Months later, he declared on Instagram that he was “cancer free”. Last weekend, Blink-182 performed at the 2024 Pa’l Norte Festival held in Monterrey, Mexico, in front of an audience of 85,000 in a moment that Hoppus shared on the same social network.

Country Music Awards Shows Are in a Texas State of Mind

The Lone Stars are aligned for two Nashville-based country awards shows.

After testing the Brazos waters in 2023, both CMT and the Academy of Country Music are bringing their annual awards shows back to Texas this year. The CMT Music Awards air April 7 on CBS from the Moody Center in Austin. The ACM, meanwhile, announces finalists for its awards on April 9, with the trophy ceremony streaming May 16 on Amazon Prime from the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco.

Texas has not traditionally been a big awards market, and for the country industry — centered primarily in Nashville — it means a few extra nights away from home for the show and lead-in activities. In exchange, awards producers showcase the genre’s talent in one of country’s primary markets, where the fan base hasn’t gotten jaded — as it might in Nashville or Los Angeles — from regular proximity to multi-artist events.

“It’s packed to the ceiling, and the fans were wild and crazy and danced the whole time,” ACM CEO Damon Whiteside recalls of last year’s show, which featured co-hosts Garth Brooks and Dolly Parton. “It was probably more cowboy boots and cowboy hats than we’d ever seen in our venues before, which was fun, too. All I can say is the energy and the passion in the room was kind of off the charts.”

The ACM and CMT arrived in Texas via different roads. The ACM took a risk in 2015 by presenting its awards at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, marking the first time that a major awards show had aired from a stadium. From the moment Whiteside arrived at the ACM in 2020, following a stint with the Country Music Association, Texas talk was on the table.

Trending on Billboard

The Dallas Cowboys, he says, “were very excited at the thought of having our show come back.”

CMT, however, transferred to Texas somewhat unexpectedly. The awards had been held on the eve of Nashville’s CMA Fest in June since 2002, but when CBS’ contract with the ACM Awards expired, the network rescheduled subsidiary CMT’s ceremony as a spring event. That created conflicts with the host venue — producers needed access to Bridgestone Arena for at least 10 days, but the NHL’s Nashville Predators had priority. Austin had courted CMT for years, and that groundwork paid off.

“Austin is the live-music capital of the world — that definitely played into it,” CMT executive producer Margaret Comeaux says. “If we were going to go anywhere outside of Music City, we wanted to make sure that we were going to a place that appreciated music as much as Nashville and CMT.”

Texas is fertile ground for country music. Both shows indicate that current Texas-bred hit-makers Cody Johnson and Parker McCollum will likely have a role in their shows. The two artists will perform at the CMT Awards, which also has appearances by native son Lukas Nelson and former Houston Astros pitcher Roger Clemens. McCollum will also host a golf tournament for the ACMs, which will make performance decisions after nominees are announced. Last year, the ACMs employed Frisco-based Corey Kent for the week’s ribbon-cutting ceremonies.

Johnson and McCollum are graduates of Texas’ red-dirt music scene, which has its own thriving concert scene, providing careers for such acts as Aaron Watson, Casey Donahew, Wade Bowen, The Randy Rogers Band and Bri Bagwell. The subgenre likewise has its own awards show: the Texas Regional Radio Report (T3R) Awards, named after the publication that produces them. Its charts appear weekly in the Billboard Country Update (see page 4).

The mainstream country community “still [doesn’t] recognize this fully,” says T3R event coordinator Tami Millspaugh, who also markets to red-dirt programmers through her Fort Worth-based company, Texas Record Chick Promotions. “They are starting to, in Nashville, more and more, because they are obviously cherry-picking some of the talent from here.”

The T3R Awards, presented for the 14th time on March 25, have been held in smaller venues — the 700-seat Arlington Music Hall and the event multiplex Texas Live! — but the show, much like Texas music, is in expansion mode. The most recent ceremony was filmed for the first time and could end up on a cable station or a streaming platform such as Netflix.

“We will have a show here within the next few weeks that we are going to be pitching to various networks,” Millspaugh says, “and just show off what we’ve done.”

The Texas Music Office is apparently keen to pull in more trophy presentations. Both the ACM and CMT received incentives from the state for bringing their events to town.

Austin has another event heading its way, too. The city is in the path of totality for the solar eclipse on April 8. More than 1 million tourists are expected to descend on the Texas capital to watch, according to KVUE-TV Austin.

“Lots of people are worried that their flights are going to get canceled, so they’re trying to get out early,” Comeaux says. “I am not one of those. There’s a few of us that might be standing out at the arrivals gate at the airport, watching it and then going inside to get on my flight.”

The ACMs, meanwhile, are connected to an ongoing Texas attraction. The Star is a 91-acre campus that houses the business center for the Cowboys’ NFL team. The built-in amenities — shops, restaurants, hotels, a golf course — make for a comfortable getaway for industry attendees, many of whom go home after a Nashville awards show.

“You’ve got industry everywhere you go and you’re bumping into people,” Whiteside says of the Frisco layout. “There’s a lot of meeting up for drinks at the Omni Hotel bar, which is where our board stays and it’s attached to the venue.”

The ACMs, which were originally centered in Los Angeles, spent roughly 20 years in Las Vegas, creating a similar temporary community on the Strip. It’s possible that CMT and/or the ACM are at the start of another 20-year out-of-town run in the Lone Star State. But no one knows yet if these moves are permanent.

“There’s a lot of excitement about the Texas market for the future,” Whiteside says, “but we haven’t made a final decision yet.”

After Serving Jail Time & Parole, Tempo Is a Free Man

Puerto Rican rapper Tempo (real name David Sánchez Badillo) is a free man, according to a spokesperson for the wordsmith.

After a 22-year stint of incarceration and parole, the hip-hop, reggaetón and trap artist “returns to full freedom,” stated a press release shared with Billboard on Friday (April 5). In 2014, he concluded an 11-year prison sentence on a drug trafficking charge after being arrested in 2002. He was initially sentenced to 292 months (24 years and 4 months), but after a third appeal where he pleaded guilty, his sentence was reduced to 15 years, of which he served 11 years and six months in prison, and 10 years on probation.

According to a statement, “this is not only the end of a stage for Tempo, but also the beginning of a new chapter in his life and career.” He’s set to announce dates for an upcoming tour “soon.”

Tempo — who landed at No. 17 on Billboard‘s 50 Best Spanish-Language Rappers of All Time list — began writing his first rap lyrics as a child. In 1994, he officially kicked off his music career, and in 1999 he released his debut studio album, Game Over. As one of the leading figures of the ‘90s and ‘00s rap movement in Puerto Rico, Tempo gained notoriety with his raw rap bars and tiraeras, and later became one of the first Latin rappers to sign a record deal with Sony Music Latin.

Trending on Billboard

While in prison, he released his album Free Tempo (2009), which reached No. 6 on the Top Latin Albums chart, and included collabs with artists like Wisin y Yandel, Tego Calderón, Jowell y Randy and Daddy Yankee. Last year, Tempo released “Me Rendí,” a song that reflects his connection with God, and “Perdóname Madre,” an ultra-personal track dedicated to his mother.

Ice Spice Takes Blame for Causing Earthquake: ‘This A– Be Clappin’

A New Jersey earthquake rattled much of New York City and the surrounding Metropolitan area on Friday morning (April 5). While Big Apple residents searched for answers as to why the rare natural disaster struck the Northeast, Ice Spice stepped in to jokingly take the blame for shifting the tectonic plates.

The Bronx native put her thick physique at fault. “My bad for the earthquake yall u kno this a– be clappin,” she wrote, tongue-in-cheek.

Fans had fun at Ice Spice’s viral booty-quake revelation and filled her replies on X (As of press time, her tweet has over 120,000 likes). “Might be the realest s— i ever heard,” one wrote.

Others continued to respond to Ice Spice with a clip of her twerking in a pool. The “Princess Diana” rapper replied to one of the videos alleging that Triller leaked it from her drafts.

Per ABC7, a 4.8 registered earthquake hit near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey around 10:23 a.m. ET on Friday, which is about 45 miles west of New York City. Shockwaves shook the East Coast from Washington, D.C. to Maine. Fortunately, there were no reports of death or major damage.

“Our preliminary reports do not indicate major life safety or infrastructure issues from the earthquake. We are performing thorough inspections of critical areas,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said.

Early estimates figure that 42 million people felt the earthquake in some capacity, but perhaps nobody capitalized on the moment more than Ice Spice thanks to her witty humor and self-awareness.

On the music side, Ice Spice is heading toward the release of her Y2K debut album later this year. The project remains without a release date, but the 24-year-old revealed she finished recording it in March.

“I think this is some of my best work,” she told Billboard of the LP while also hinting that “it’s not going to be too long — it’s going to be sweet and to the point.”
