Drake & 21 Savage’s ‘Her Loss’ Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart

Drake and 21 Savage’s collaborative album, Her Loss, debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart (dated Nov. 19) with the year’s biggest week for an R&B/hip-hop set and the fourth-largest streaming week ever for any album.

Her Loss launches with 404,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Nov. 10, according to Luminate. Streaming activity drove the bulk of that sum, to the tune of 513.56 million on-demand official streams of its 16 tracks.

Her Loss is the 12th No. 1 for Drake and the third leader for 21 Savage. Drake now solely has the third-most No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 chart, since the list began publishing on a regular weekly basis in March of 1956. Ahead of him are only The Beatles, with a record 19 No. 1s and Jay-Z with 14. Drake was previously tied with Bruce Springsteen, Barbra Streisand and Taylor Swift, each with 11 No. 1s on the Billboard 200.

Her Loss was announced on Oct. 22 and then-slated for an Oct. 28 release. On Oct. 26, its release was postponed to Nov. 4. The set was released via streaming services and as an album download via digital retailers. A physical release for the set on CD or any other format has not been announced.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Nov. 19, 2022-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Tuesday (Nov. 15). For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.

Of Her Loss’ 404,000 equivalent album units earned, SEA units comprise 391,000 (equaling 513.56 million on-demand official streams of the set’s tracks), album sales comprise 12,000 and SEA units comprise 1,000.

Biggest Week for an R&B/Hip-Hop Album in 2022: Her Loss tallies not just the largest week for any R&B/hip-hop set in 2022, but the biggest since Drake’s own Certified Lover Boy debuted at No. 1 more than a year ago, with 613,000 units on the Sept. 18, 2021-dated chart. Among all albums in 2022, Her Loss nets the third-biggest week by units earned, trailing only the No. 1 debuts of Taylor Swift’s Midnights (1.578 million; Nov. 5 chart) and Harry Styles’ Harry’s House (521,000; June 4).

Fourth-Largest Streaming Week Ever: Her Loss captures the fourth-largest streaming week ever for an album, by total on-demand official streams of its combined tracks (513.56 million). Drake owns three of the top four biggest streaming weeks, and half of the top 10 largest weeks.

The Nos. 1 and 2 biggest streaming weeks were logged by the debut frames of Drake’s Scorpion (745.92 million in 2018) and Certified Lover Boy (743.67 million, 2021), respectively. Swift’s Midnights debut is No. 3 (549.26 million, 2022) and Lil Wayne’s opening week with Tha Carter V is No. 5 (433.02 million, 2018). Nos. 6-10 are the debuts of Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys (431.34 million, 2018), Juice WRLD’s Legends Never Die (422.63 million, 2020) and Lil Uzi Vert’s Eternal Atake (400.42 million, 2020), the second week of Drake’s Scorpion (390.98 million, 2018) and the opening frame of Drake’s More Life (384.84 million, 2017).

A Dozen No. 1 Albums: Drake’s even dozen No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 continues to pull him closer to Jay-Z, who has the record for the most No. 1s among solo acts, with 14. The Beatles have the most No. 1s among all artists, as the Fab Four has 19 leaders. Below is a list of every act with at least 10 No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200, since the list began publishing on a regular weekly basis in March of 1956.

Taylor Swift’s Midnights falls to No. 2 on the latest Billboard 200 after spending its first two weeks atop the chart. The set earned 299,000 equivalent album units in the latest tracking week (down 13%). Lil Baby’s former No. 1 It’s Only Me dips 2-3 with 62,000 units (down 24%) and Bad Bunny’s chart-topping Un Verano Sin Ti slips out of the top three for the first time in its 27 chart weeks, as it shifts 3-4 with 58,000 units (down 8%).

Joji achieves his third top 10-charting effort on the Billboard 200 — all of which have debuted in the top five — as Smithereens opens at No. 5 with 57,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, SEA units comprise 39,500 (equaling 52.95 million on-demand official streams of the set’s nine tracks), album sales comprise 17,500 and TEA units comprise a negligible sum. The set was led by the hit single “Glimpse of Us,” which became the artist’s first top 10 (and top 40) hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 8 on the July 2-dated list.

Rounding out the new Billboard 200’s top 10 are Morgan Wallen’s chart-topping Dangerous: The Double Album (falling 5-6 with 41,000 equivalent album units earned; though up 1%), The Weeknd’s The Highlights (6-7 with 39,000; down 4%), Styles’ Harry’s House (9-8 with 30,000; down 4%), Zach Bryan’s American Heartbreak (11-9 with 28,000; up 11%) and Steve Lacy’s Gemini Rights (17-10 with 27,000; up 32% following its release on vinyl on Nov. 4).

Penned by the team behind “Provenza” — Karol, Ovy and Keityn — “Cairo” is a head-bobbing earworm that thrives on a fusion of dance beats and Afrobeat. In the song, Karol sings about allowing herself to love again, even after swearing she wouldn’t.

“I’m not in love yet, but soon I will be,” she confesses.

“Cairo” follows Karol G’s “Gatubela,” which dropped in August. With the track, in collaboration with Maldy, the Colombian artist banked her 16th top 10 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs with a No. 4 debut on the Sept. 10-dated ranking.

Billboard recently reported that Karol G‘s $Trip Love tour had grossed $69.9 million and sold 410,000 tickets across 33 shows in North America (through the end of October), according to numbers reported to Billboard Boxscore. With those figures, the Colombian star has now earned the highest U.S.-grossing tour by a female Latin act.

With $Trip Love, the “Provenza” singer surpasses Jennifer Lopez‘s $50 million grossing It’s My Party World Tour in 2019. Meanwhile, Shakira grossed $28.2 million in 2018 with her El Dorado World Tour. This year, Rosalía’s Motomami world tour has grossed $28.1 million through the end of October.

The 31-year-old artist is currently working on her forthcoming album, which will follow her chart-topping, Grammy-nominated 2021 set, KG0516. She’s also slated to headline the 16th annual Calibash, taking place Jan. 21-22 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. She joins a previously billed group of headliners that includes Ozuna, Myke Towers and Farruko.

Black Star Joined by Madlib for ‘No Fear of Time’ Performances During ‘SNL’ Debut: Watch

Black Star made their Studio 8H debut on Nov. 12.

Introduced as “Brooklyn’s finest” by third-time Saturday Night Live host Dave Chappelle, the hip-hop duo of Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) performed a pair of tracks from their long-awaited new album, No Fear or Time.

The 49-year-old comedian co-costs the Midnight Miracle podcast with Kweli and Bey.

For their musical guest spot, Black Star delivered two new tracks — “So Be It” and “The Main Thing Is to Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing” — from their new Madlib-produced album, No Fear of Time, which arrived earlier this year on Luminary. The nine-song set is the duo’s first album since 1998’s Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star.

Kweli and Bey were joined onstage by Madlib for the hard-hitting tracks. Ahead of Black Star’s SNL performance, Kweli spoke about the significance of appearing on the long-running NBC sketch comedy show.

“I can’t recall seeing a more hip-hop, a more independent group than Black Star to ever do SNL,” the artist told Consequence. “So I’m definitely excited to represent for the culture.”

Louis Tomlinson Reveals He Broke His Arm After a Fall

Louis Tomlinson‘s album release week took an unexpected turn.

The former One Direction member, who released his sophomore studio set, Faith in the Future, on Friday (Nov. 11), has been forced to postpone some promotional appearances after breaking his arm after a concert at New York City’s Irving Plaza.

He was scheduled to hold several in-store signings for the album in the U.K. in the coming week. According to an update from Tomlinson on Saturday (Nov. 12), those signings will be rescheduled.

“Thank you everyone that’s listened to the new album so far, it means the world to me. The show last night in New York was incredible. Unfortunately on the way back I managed to fall and break my right arm pretty badly,” Tomlinson told fans on social media, where he uploaded X-ray images of the broken bone.

“So I’m gutted to say I’ll have to reschedule the in-store signings next week,” he wrote. “New dates will be announced very soon. Thank you for all your support and sorry to anyone who was coming next week.”

Tomlinson’s Faith in the Future arrives nearly three years after his debut solo outing Walls, which bowed at No. 9 on the Billboard 200 upon its January 2020 release.

Nick Cannon Welcomes 11th Child: ‘Daddy Loves You!’

Nick Cannon‘s eleventh child arrived on 11/11.

The father of 11 kids so far — spread out among six mothers — happily announced the Nov. 11 birth of his and Abby De La Rosa’s newest arrival, Beautiful Zeppelin Cannon, on Instagram on Saturday (Nov. 12), a day after the baby’s birth.

“11/11/2022 A BEAUTIFUL DAY for ‘BEAUTIFUL ZEPPELIN CANNON’ to arrive!” Cannon wrote.

De La Rosa also shared an Instagram Stories snapshot of herself holding the newborn on her chest.

Cannon and De La Rosa now have three children together, as they welcomed twin sons Zion and Zillion in 2021.

The Masked Singer host first became a father to twins with Mariah Carey in 2011. Since then, he has had children with five other ladies — Brittany Bell, Abby De La Rosa, Bre Tiesi, LaNisha Cole and Alyssa Scott, with whom he has another on the way soon. On Nov. 3, Scott posted a series of maternity photos with Cannon, writing, “a BLESSING.”

Quavo Shares Tribute to Takeoff: ‘I Love You With All My Heart’

Quavo shared an emotional tribute to his nephew Takeoff after the shocking death of the Migos rapper. Takeoff (born Kirshnik Khari Ball) was shot and killed on Nov. 1 in Houston, Texas. He was 28.

“Dear Take, it’s so hard to tell you Ima miss you because you always with me and we did everything together,” Quavo wrote on Instagram on Saturday (Nov. 12), where he also shared a slideshow of personal photos the day after a memorial service for Takeoff. The two, along with Offset, make up the Grammy-nominated trio Migos. During their career together, the three-piece released four studio albums, two of which — Culture (2017) and Culture II (2018) — debuted on the Billboard 200 at No. 1.

Quavo wrote, “Since we were kids you been by my side lookin up at me, them eyes waiting on me to make the next move.. then you followed up right behind me. You always made sure I did it first so you can do it right with me. You never competed with me, we were always on same team. You hated playing against me because I was always playing too hard or too ruff then I can hear my mama say ‘sonnnn not too ruff’ cuz I didn’t like to lose!”

“Remember, our first dream was to be tag team partners in WWE. We fell in love with WWF wresting.. man we had every action figure. Thought we was gonna be pro wrestlers cuz the way he imitated all the wrestlers so good and if you know Take, his imitation skills are to the T.. he could imitate anybody just ask Danny and P,” he recalled.

“Super quiet though, quietest in the room but paid attention to everything going on in the room, always been like that!!!” Quavo said of Takeoff. “Nothing ever really bothered Take and he didn’t bother anybody. He the most unbothered person in the world. He never got mad, he never raised his voice, and when he did, he silenced the room because what Take said was law and he wasn’t changing his mind fa na, not even Unc could, you just gotta let em cool off for bout 30 mins.”

“But by far the funniest person in room,” he added. “Once you got him goin he wouldn’t stop.”

Quavo remembered that “last but not least he took time with everything. We called it the ‘Takeoff Time.’ Whenever we would be running late to the shows he would always say ‘God will get us there on time.’ Some shows God did, some shows we were late. Point is he trusted God though.”

Quavo credited Takeoff with starting their musical journey.

“Throughout this whole time he had a REAL passion for music,” he said. “It was HIS dream to become a rapper cuz I didn’t kno what I wanted to do. I tried everything, all the sports. After every game I would come home and he would just sit there playing the game with the controller in his hand looking, and look at my face and he could tell we lost another game. So sports wasn’t his thing cuz he saw me lose all the time. This is how I knew he was gonna be a rapper. Growing up he knew every song off the Hot Boyz album, every lyric word for word and he was cursing up a storm. Mama heard him rapping, took the CD and said that music was too grown for us.. until we won the Boys and Girls Club talent show together performing ‘Get Ya Roll On’ by Big Timers, it was all good then.”

“So it’s safe to say we had something going then. It came easy to us when it came to style and swag. We were always looking like somebody cuz our mama dressed us like rappers or grown men as u can see in the pictures! Our clothes were huge but we had the look!!! Then he created his triplet flow and the rest was HISTORY. He never worried about titles, credit, or what man got the most shine, that wasn’t him. He didn’t care about none of that as long we brought it back home to the family!” wrote Quavo.

He then reflected on their close relationship and called Takeoff the family’s “angel.”

“The whole time I’ve been trying to figure what you really are to me because nephew wasn’t it,” he said. “We hated that word ‘nephew’ or when they said ‘Unc and Phew’ cuz we always knew we were way closer than that and it made me feel old too. But I knew you weren’t my brother cuz you are my sister’s son, so I couldn’t say brother. Now I finally get it… you are OUR angel watching me and watching us this whole time in living form making sure EVERYONE FELT UR LOVE AND HUGS while u here and u made our dreams come true. Whenever u spoke it, it manifested it wen u said ‘God gonna do it,’ he did it. I’m just proud be in your life, I’m proud to be ya UNCLE. I’m proud we saw the world and done things we couldn’t ever imagine together. We laughed way more than we ever argued and when we did I always was in the wrong every time… I guess mama made that rule too! I’m proud to say I’ve seen your blessings, I’ve seen you bless me, you blessed mama, you blessed Shara, you blessed Treet, Heaven and Zeke. You will continue to send your blessings down from Heaven and I will continue to keep your name alive as long as I live.”

“It’s always my responsibility to look after my nephews and nieces. I will do that before we make moves or any decision we always gon say ‘what would Take think?’ Always been, ain’t nun gonna change,” Quavo wrote. “Me and u knew we gon always be with each other for life and jus like now we gon see each other again. I love you with all my heart. I’ll never leave you I guess God jus ain’t need my help. So can you ask Him for me what I gotta do to be with you again!!! In a place where there’s no pain, no demons, no jealousy, no envy, no greed. Whatever we have to do God to be at that place of paradise send us the tools now cuz we wanna be with Take. Love you nephew!”

Keith Levene, Co-Founder of the Clash and Public Image Ltd, Dies at 65

Keith Levene, the innovative guitarist who was a founding member of the Clash and Public Image Ltd, has died in Norfolk, U.K. He was 65.

His death was announced through social media on Saturday (Nov. 12) by former Public Image Ltd bandmates Martin Atkins and Jah Wobble. Levene passed away following a battle with liver cancer, The Guardian reports.

Billboard has reached out to Public Image Ltd’s representatives for comment.

“A sad time to learn of the passing of guitar giant Keith Levene,” Atkins wrote on Twitter. “We had our ups and downs that had mellowed over time. My respect for his unique talent never will.”

“RIP KEITH LEVENE,” Wobble said.

Author Adam Hammond, a friend of Levene, wrote on Twitter that he died on Friday (Nov. 11) and noted, “There is no doubt that Keith was one of the most innovative, audacious and influential guitarists of all time.”

Levene, who was born in London in 1957 and as a teenager was a roadie for Yes, was a co-founder of the Clash but left the band before their first album was even released.

He teamed up with guitarist Mick Jones in the mid-1970s to form an early version of the Clash. Along with the band’s manager Bernard Rhodes, Levene convinced Joe Strummer to join the group. Levene departed before the act started recording, but co-wrote the song “What’s My Name,” which appears on the Clash’s 1977 debut album.

After leaving the Clash, Levene briefly formed the band the Flowers of Romance with Sid Vicious, who later left to join the Sex Pistols. When the Sex Pistols disbanded in 1978, Levene and singer John Lydon joined forces with bass player John Wardle (aka Jah Wobble) and drummer Jim Walker to form Public Image Ltd.

Levene contributed to Public Image Ltd’s earliest albums — First Issue (1978), Metal Box (1979) and Flowers of Romance (1981) — and left the group in the mid-1983.

Later in his career, Levene worked on a handful of solo projects, including 1989’s Violent Opposition, featuring members of Red Hot Chili Peppers.

“Music is important to me because I’m a composer. It turns out that I really am a good musician and composer. I can’t read music, I’m self-taught … I was never really enamoured with punk, it just came at the right time,” Levene said in an interview with the publication Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie Zine.

He recalled his early years as a musician: “When I came off tour with Yes I realized I wanted to be in a band. Having a band was a big f—ing thing for a 15-year-old. I’m looking at this cherry red guitar in my little bedroom, I remember like it was yesterday, I’m looking at this thing and thought I had to get a real Gibson. I knew me well enough by then to know that I wasn’t going to allow myself to have a Gibson unless I could play really, really well, proper.”

BTS’ Jung Kook to Perform at 2022 FIFA World Cup Opening Ceremony in Qatar

BTS‘ Jung Kook is heading to the 2022 World Cup.

The K-pop superstar has been tapped to perform during the soccer tournament’s opening ceremony in Qatar on Nov. 20. He will also contribute to the World Cup soundtrack, according to a tweet from the seven-piece group.

“Proud to announce that Jung Kook is part of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Soundtrack & will perform at the World Cup opening ceremony. Stay tuned!” BTS wrote on Friday (Nov. 11).

The 2022 FIFA World Cup launches on Nov. 20 with host nation Qatar’s tournament opener against Ecuador. A total of 32 teams, representing different countries, will participate. The winning team will be crowned as the World Cup champion on Dec. 18. 

Jung Kook has released several solo songs in recent years. Following the release of BTS’ anthology album, Proof, in June, the singer gifted ARMY the solo track “My You.” Earlier in the year, he also teamed up with BTS’ Suga for the for the ballad “Stay Alive,” which appeared on the official soundtrack to the original webtoon from HYBE, 7FATES: CHAKHO. Jung Kook shared his first single, “Still With You,” in 2020 as part of BTS’ annual Festa party.

The exciting news arrives on the heels of BTS’ RM announcing that his first solo album, Indigo, will arrive on Dec. 2. RM’s forthcoming release arrives shortly after fellow BTS member Jin dropped his own solo track titled “The Astronaut,” which currently sit at No. 51 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Joe Tarsia, ‘Sound of Philadelphia’ Architect, Dies at 88

Joe Tarsia, founder of Sigma Sound Studios and chief engineer for Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff’s Philadelphia International Records, died on Nov. 1 in Lancaster, Penn. The 88-year-old’s cause of death was not disclosed.

In collaboration with songwriter/producers Gamble, Huff, and Thom Bell, Tarsia played an instrumental role in crafting PIR’s distinctive brand of sophisticated soul, dubbed the Sound of Philadelphia. He left his imprint on a host of classic hits such as Jerry Butler’s “Only the Strong Survive,” The O’Jays’ “Love Train” and “Back Stabbers,” Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes’ “If You Don’t Know Me by Now,” Billy Paul’s “Me and Mrs. Jones” and The Spinners’ “I’ll Be Around.”  Tarsia also amassed credits on recordings by Teddy Pendergrass, the Stylistics, Patti LaBelle, the Delfonics and Lou Rawls.

Beyond the stable of PIR acts, Sigma Sound in Philadelphia also attracted the likes of Stevie Wonder, David Bowie and the Jacksons. Tarsia also operated a Sigma Sound branch in New York from 1977-1988, booking sessions for Madonna, Whitney Houston and Elton John, among others.

Paying tribute to his and Huff’s longtime creative comrade and friend in a statement, Gamble said in part, “As our main studio recording engineer for PIR, Joe was a tremendous asset in helping us create what became the legendary Sound of Philadelphia. For all of the songs written and produced by me, Huff and our label and recorded by our artists, Joe was the sound recording architect to the music we gave to the world. Joe’s passing is a great loss to me personally, professionally and to the legacy of recorded music.”

“Joe and his Sigma Sound Studios were second to none,” added Huff. “I too am very saddened for the loss of our dear friend and one of the greatest sound engineers ever. Joe’s connection to me and Gamble was like Quincy Jones’ relationship with his personal engineer, Bruce Swedien. More importantly, it was an honor for me to share my music career with Joe and blessed to have him in our recording booth as I played on those sessions that helped us create the Sound of Philadelphia.”

A native of Philadelphia born on Sept. 23, 1934, Tarsia worked at electronics company Philco before joining Cameo-Parkway Records as the label’s engineer in the early ’60s, recording artists such as Chubby Checker and Bobby Rydell. It was during this period that he first met Bell, Gamble and Huff, engineering the latter pair’s 1967 hit with the Soul Survivors, “Expressway to Your Heart.” He later risked borrowing against his home to found Sigma Sound Studios in 1968 — so christened after Tarsia saw the word Sigma on a place mat at a Greek restaurant.

“Literally, I hocked my house and [took] all the cash I had accumulated — everything I had — and got a bank to lend me forty thousand dollars and never looked back,” Tarsia recalled in the 2003 book Temples of Sound: Inside the Great Recording Studios.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Sigma Sound’s founding in 2018, Tarsia told The Philadelphia Inquirer, “If I made a contribution, it was that Philadelphia had a unique sound. I was able to attract the best technicians, the best engineers. And the history speaks for itself. Sigma — not me — has 200 gold and platinum records … There was the Motown sound. The Memphis sound. Cardi B Remembers Takeoff in Emotional Tribute: ‘The Pain Is Incomparable’

Cardi B continues to mourn the “untimely passing” of Takeoff.

Shortly after the Migos rapper’s memorial service in Atlanta on Friday (Nov. 11), Cardi took to social media to further reflect on the devastating loss.

“Takeoff your untimely passing has brought a great deal of pain and sorrow to so many lives. The impact you had in this world was so considerable and we have struggled to grasp this tragedy,” Cardi, who is married to Migos member Offset, wrote on Instagram alongside a photo gallery of Takeoff. “I am heartbroken but I am grateful for all the precious memories we got to share while you were here with us. This has truly been a nightmare and the pain is incomparable.”

Takeoff — a member of the Grammy-nominated trio Migos alongside his uncle, Quavo, and cousin, Offset — was killed by an unknown assailant while partying with Quavo at a billiard hall in Houston on Nov. 1.

Cardi, who previously collaborated with the rap group, also touched on the “emptiness” that his fellow Migos members are feeling in the days following his passing.

“The emptiness your brothers are feeling is unbearable and I pray that you give Offset ,Quavo, and your friends and family the strength to keep going as they are trying to cope with this loss,” she continued. “I believe that angels send signs and beautiful dreams to loved ones to assure them that they’re watching them and they’re okay and happy…send your mom some of those.”

Cardi closed her tribute by noting the significant impact Migos had on the music business. During their career, the three-piece released four studio albums, two of which — Culture (2017) and Culture II (2018) — debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The group also had chart-topping hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with 2016’s “Bad and Boujee,” featuring Lil Uzi Vert.

“As a Migos fan it hurts me to look at pictures and videos of y’all together, and hearing y’all songs that changed the music industry and moved the culture and had the clubs lit,” Cardi wrote. “It hurts because I know it will never be the same again—but I know your bros and y’all fans will make sure the world never forgets the impact you made. I will remember your remarkable talent and your dope ass personality. I pray that you are at peace and in paradise because you deserve every bit of it. I know God opened the heavenly gates for you with a warm embrace. Rest in power TakeOff I will also love you 4L & after.”
