Metro Boomin Scores Third No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 With ‘Heroes & Villains’

Metro Boomin’s superstar-filled album Heroes & Villains debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart (dated Dec. 17), giving the producer his third leader on the list. The 15-song set starts with his biggest week yet: 185,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Dec. 8, according to Luminate — largely driven by streaming activity.

Heroes & Villains boasts a cavalcade of heavy-hitters, including 21 Savage, A$AP Rocky, Chris Brown, Future, Gunna, John Legend, Travis Scott, the late Takeoff, Don Toliver, The Weeknd, Young Thung and unbilled spoken word cameos from Morgan Freeman.

Heroes & Villains is Metro Boomin’s seventh charting effort on the Billboard 200, and fifth to reach the top 10. He previously hit the region with Savage Mode II (a collaborative album with 21 Savage, No. 1 in 2020), Not All Heroes Wear Capes (No. 1, 2018), Double or Nothing (a collaborative set with Big Sean, No. 6 in 2017) and Without Warning (billed to 21 Savage, Offset and Metro Boomin, No. 4 in 2017).

On Sept. 16, Heroes & Villains was initially announced with a release date of Nov. 4. Then, on Oct. 26, the set was pushed to Dec. 2 due to sample clearance issues.

Also in the top 10 on the Billboard 200, Mariah Carey’s Merry Christmas returns, rising 11-10. The album, released in 1994, peaked at No. 3 that year, and has returned to the top 10 in each of the last four holiday seasons.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Dec. 17, 2022-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Dec. 13. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.

Of Heroes & Villains’ 185,000 equivalent album units earned, SEA units comprise 179,000 (equaling 233.38 million on-demand official streams of the set’s tracks), album sales comprise 5,000 and TEA units comprise 1,000. The album’s sales were largely powered by its digital download album, though there was a CD available in limited quantities (including a signed version), which resulted in about 3,000 sales. In addition, on Dec. 5 the album was reissued in a deluxe edition on streamers and at digital retail with 15 bonus instrumental tracks of the album’s standard songs.

Following Heroes & Villains (released via Boominati/Republic) on the Billboard 200, a pair of former No. 1s is up next, as Taylor Swift’s Midnights (Republic) falls to No. 2 with 143,000 equivalent album units (down 5%) and Drake and 21 Savage’s Her Loss (OVO Sound/Republic) dips 2-3 with 78,000 (down 16%). Thus, Republic Records completes a sweep of the top three on the Billboard 200, the first time any label has held the top three since Republic itself did it on the Feb. 6, 2021-dated list. That week, the chart was led by Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album (Big Loud/Republic), Pop Smoke’s Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon (Victor Victor Worldwide/Republic) and Swift’s Evermore (Republic).

Bad Bunny’s chart-topping Un Verano Sin Ti falls 3-4 on the Billboard 200 with 55,000 equivalent album units earned (though up 5%). Michael Bublé’s former No. 1 Christmas is pushed down 4-5 despite a 16% gain to 54,000 units. Harry Styles’ No. 1 Harry’s House rises 9-6 with 49,000 units (up 42% — mostly owed to vinyl LP sales) and Wallen’s Dangerous descends 6-7, but with a gain of 16% to 47,000.

Wrapping up the top 10 are The Weeknd’s The Highlights (7-8 with 42,000 equivalent album units; up 5%), Nat King Cole’s The Christmas Song (8-9 with just over 40,000; up 13%) and Carey’s Merry Christmas (11-10 with 40,000; up 23%).

Luminate, the independent data provider to the Billboard charts, completes a thorough review of all data submissions used in compiling the weekly chart rankings. Luminate reviews and authenticates data. In partnership with Billboard, data deemed suspicious or unverifiable is removed, using established criteria, before final chart calculations are made and published.

Georgia Holt, Actress, Singer and Cher’s Mother, Dies at 96

Georgia Holt, the seven times-married mother of Cher who spent time as a model, actress and singer-songwriter, has died, her daughter announced Saturday night (Dec. 10) on Twitter. She was 96.

“Mom is gone,” Cher wrote.

A rep for the Oscar-winning singer-actress confirmed Holt’s death to The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday morning. No details of Holt’s death were immediately available.

Holt appeared briefly in such films as A Life of Her Own (1950), Grounds for Marriage (1951), Father’s Little Dividend (1951) and Artists and Models (1955) and on TV shows like The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and, as a “Jacques Marcel” model, on I Love Lucy (in the hilarious 1956 episode “Lucy Gets a Paris Gown”).

Holt was offered a contract by Columbia Records, and in 1980 recorded an album, Honky Tonk Woman, backed by members of Elvis Presley’s band. It included a duet with Cher, “I’m Just Your Yesterday”; covers of “Love Me Tender” and “Cryin’ Time”; and original tunes written by Holt.

“I know that a record company might want to sign me just because I’m Cher’s mother,” she told People magazine in 1978. “I’d like to have a career, but I’m not going to be a novelty or a flash in the pan. A lot of people say I can do it.”

However, the album was not released until spring 2013, shortly after the master tapes were rediscovered in Holt’s garage. Cher took the tapes to her musical director, Paul Mirkovich of The Voice, and “he went in and took it all apart and put all new music in it,” she told Jay Leno on The Tonight Show. “Basically, we just kept Mom’s voice and put everything else new on it.”

Also in 2013, mother and daughter appeared (with Cher’s half-sister, actress Georganne La Piere) in the Mother’s Day Lifetime documentary Dear Mom, Love Cher.

A year later, Holt appeared as a guest judge alongside her grandson Chaz Bono on Logo TV’s RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Holt was born Jackie Jean Crouch on June 9, 1926, in Kensett, Arkansas. Her mother was just 13 at the time and her father, a baker and an alcoholic, wasn’t much older.

“When I was little I was a singer,” she said in a 2013 interview. “When I was 7, my father used to put me up on top of the old-fashioned bars. They used to have sawdust on the floor and spittoons. It was during the Depression. We had no money and no food — well, we got beans, but that was it.”

She performed with bandleader Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys at age 10 and then hitchhiked to California with her dad and her brother. She once said that she had attended 17 different junior high schools growing up.

While working in a doughnut shop in Fresno, California, she met truck driver John Sarkisian, and soon they were off to Reno, Nevada, to be married.

“I left him the day after [the wedding],” she told People. “I knew I didn’t want to be married. But he told me to try it for three months, and if I didn’t like it, then I could walk out. Well, before three months was out, I was pregnant with Cher.”

Cherilyn Sarkisian was born on May 20, 1946, in El Centro, California, and spent some time in a Catholic orphanage, where nuns urged her mother to give up her baby for adoption, but Holt wouldn’t do it.

Holt won several singing and beauty competitions and worked as a model as she made her way to Hollywood. She said that she was given a part in John Huston’s The Asphalt Jungle (1950), but her agent called to say she was being replaced by Marilyn Monroe.

Holt was married three times by the time she was 21. Her husbands were Sarkisian, John Southall, Joseph Harper Collins, Chris Alcaide, banker Gilbert La Pierre (who adopted Cher and Georganne), Sarkisian again and Hamilton Holt.

She also had a recent and longtime relationship with former antiques dealer Craig Spencer.

Brandi Carlile Brings ‘The Story’ & ‘You and Me on the Rock’ to ‘SNL’

Brandi Carlile returned to SNL as the musical guest on Saturday (Dec. 10), delivering one of her classics, 2007’s “The Story,” and her Grammy-nominated “You and Me on the Rock” featuring Lucius.

For her first performance of the night, Carlile was introduced by Martin Short, who co-hosted this weekend’s episode with Steve Martin.

“Ladies and gentlemen, Brandi Carlile,” Short announced, as Carlile launched into “The Story,” the title track from her sophomore album.

Carlile took the stage again later in the evening, introduced this time by Steve Martin and accompanied by Lucius for “You and Me on the Rock,” who were also featured on the track on Carlile’s In These Silent Days album.

She’d previously graced the SNL set in 2021, when she performed “Broken Horses” and “Right on Time.”

An excited Carlile tweeted a photo of herself holding one of Martin and Short’s SNL cue cards Saturday morning, after calling the hosts “the funniest people in the world” in a tweet following a rehearsal earlier in the week. “I’m in love,” she said.

Shawn Wasabi’s Colorful Visuals

Besides being a creative producer who makes tracks by using his own curated sounds as well as samples from everything — yes, everything, including iPhone alarms, games, doors closing and more — Wasabi is also a pro at cultivating the perfect aesthetic to accompany his kawaii yet heavily electronic set. From Super Mario challenges to Animal Crossing scenes bursting on the screen behind him, the 27-year-old’s set feels like living in a real-life video game, all while enjoying some really awesome, unique music.

Before stepping onstage, SEVENTEEN’s Joshua, Mingyu and Dino chatted with Billboard‘s Tetris Kelly before flawlessly executing the dance challenge inspired by Netflix’s Wednesday, nailing the viral choreography to the tune of Lady Gaga‘s “Bloody Mary.” The clip even got reposted by Emma Myers, who plays Enid in the series.

India Shawn’s Vocals

One thing about the Free Nationals, is that they are masters of their craft. They certainly didn’t need any guests to make their set great, but adding India Shawn amplified the performance thanks to her effortlessly smooth vocal ability and charming stage presence. She even stepped in for Anderson .Paak

SEVENTEEN’s Entire Set

All thirteen members of SEVENTEEN took the stage too the sound of cheers from Carat, who had been waiting at the LA3C stage since doors opened to see their favorite guys — and they didn’t disappoint. From precisely synchronized dances and bursting onstage pyrotechnics to harmonized vocals and sleek outfits, the K-pop group kept the energy high with hits like “HOT,” “Left & Right” and “Aju Nice,” which they repeated six times due to audience demand.

While Snoop performed a slew of hits during his set, including “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” “All I Do Is Win,” “Nuthin’ But a ‘G’ Thang,” and “I Wanna Love You,” there’s nothing quite like hearing the King of LA perform his ultimate Dr. Dre collab, “The Next Episode,” at a Los Angeles festival celebrating everything abou the City of Angels.

Lil Baby’s Headlining Set

While Lil Baby stepped in for Megan Thee Stallion as the LA3C day one headliner, the rapper still brought the heat. The star pulled out all his top tracks, keeping the crowd just as pumped as he was with songs like “Drip Too Hard” and “Freestyle.”

Mariah Carey Duets With 11-Year-Old Daughter Monroe at First Post-COVID Christmas Concert: ‘This Is My Baby Girl!’

TORONTO — At her first live concert since the pandemic, the Queen of Christmas herself, Mariah Carey, brought out her princess, Monroe, to duet with her at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena on Friday night on the 19th-century carol “Away in a Manger,” and the 11-year-old is cut from the same tulle cloth as her mom. In other words, she can sing.

Both mom and daughter, resplendent in sparkly white dresses and tiaras, sat for the song on a set that included Christmas trees, presents and toy soldiers.

“This is my baby girl, here,” Carey said in her introduction. “Eleven years ago, I got the greatest gift. You know what, I don’t have birthdays, but the birthing day was the greatest gift ever, when I had my twins Roc and Roe [Moroccan and Monroe], and once again I’d like to introduce you to my daughter, Monroe.

“This is our first duet,” Carey told the sold-out crowd, before asking her daughter if her dress is OK. “Alright, this is a beautiful, beautiful hymn called ‘Away in a Manger.’ We’ve been working on this one for a minute,” she says, gently patting her daughter’s back.

Carey started the song with some notes showing off her inimitable upper range before Monroe — not looking the least bit nervous — started with the lyric, smoothly and indeed beautifully, to roars of approval from the impressed audience of 13,000.  “My daughter, Miss Monroe,” she said proudly at the end of the 90-second song.

The family-friendly Merry Christmas to All! Concert was Mimi’s first of four, two in Toronto and two in New York City at Madison Square Garden, Dec. 13 and 16. On Saturday (Dec. 10), her stage has been dismantled for the night’s Maple Leafs vs. Flames game and will go back up again for Sunday night.

Carey kept referring to the show as a dress rehearsal and trial run, but with her killer band and dancers, and festive stage design, there were no lumps of coal in this hour and 45-minute set.

She was also funny, endearing, self-deprecating, gracious and warm, discussing the hardships of the lockdown, soaking in the audience, telling a fan she would keep the handmade pillow embroidered with her likeness, praising her band, and playing up her vanity by blotting her face with tissues and bringing her makeup artists out on the stage to do touch-ups.

The setlist was mostly comprised of Christmas songs, including the highly anticipated finale of her perennial Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” for which she received a diamond-certification plaque onstage.

And for those unable to catch any of the four shows, Carey’s two-hour concert special Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to All! airs Dec. 20 on CBS and Paramount+.

Maestro Cares 2022 Gala

This week, the Maestro Cares Foundation, co-founded by Marc Anthony and Henry Cárdenas, hosted the ninth annual “Changing Live, Building Dreams” gala at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, hosting more than 600 guests, including J Balvin, Ariana Debose, key industry leaders and more. This year’s event, co-hosted by Ana Navarro and Cesar Milan, recognized five key personalities in the music, sports and business fields: Gloria and Emilio Estefan with the community hero award, Mariano Rivera with the all-star award, Jeff Hoffman with the courage to care award, and Eduardo Trujillo with the corporate social responsibility award. Proceeds from the fundraiser will provide essential support for Maestro Cares, which is a nonprofit organization established to improve the quality of life of disadvantaged children and communities in Latin America and the U.S.

The Good Bunny Foundation

The Good Bunny Foundation (a nonprofit organization founded by Bad Bunny) will host its “Bonita Tradición” gift drive, where they will give out 25,000 gifts related to the arts (sports equipment, instruments, paint materials and more) to children in Puerto Rico. The event will include many stations serving traditional food and drinks, as well as live music and the opportunity to snap a photo with Los Reyes Magos. “We want to close the year in the best way, bringing a bit of joy, hope, and love to the children with an event that reflects the best of this time with a very special emphasis on the traditions of our island,” said José “Che Juan ” Torres, director of the Good Bunny Foundation, in a press statement. “Bonita Tradicion” will take place at 8 a.m. local time on Dec. 27 at Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan.

Karol G’s Film Venture

After her successful Strip Love Tour, Karol G picks up the mic for a new venture — this time, lending her voice for the Puss in Boots: The Last Wish movie soundtrack in a song dubbed “La Vida es Una.” In true Karol fashion, the Ovy on the Drums-produced track is a vibrant reggaeton with a flair of flamenco guitars in honor of Spanish actor Antonio Banderas, who returns as the voice of the notorious PiB. The animated film, which comes 11 years after the premiere of the 2011 film Puss in Boots, will be available in theaters this Christmas.

Love Is in the Air

A lot of love is in the air as of late, starting with Becky G who just got engaged to her longtime boyfriend, soccer star Sebastian Lletget. The couple, who began dating in 2016, shared the news on social media with a sweet photo carousel. “Our spot forever,” they captioned the joint post.

Meanwhile, Puerto Rican artist Jay Wheeler and his girlfriend, singer-songwriter, Zhamira Zambrano, celebrated their one-year anniversary this week. “You are the best thing that has happened in my life, princess, thank you for being part of my happiness and for giving me peace in this world that is so heavy and full of so much damage,” Wheeler expressed. The couple got engaged in the summer.

Argentinean Artists Celebrating

A wave of Argentinean music stars are celebrating after a very suspenseful match between Netherlands and Argentina at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. After a nearly three-hour game, Lionel Messi and the team have qualified for the semifinals with a 4-3 win in the penalty kicks round. On social media, many artists shared their excitement, including Fito Paez. Others, like Lali Esposito and Bizarrap, celebrated at the actual game in Qatar. And artists such as Maluma, Bad Bunny and Daddy Yankee, were spotted supporting the game.

Alanis Morissette Plays Her Best for Us With New ‘Little Drummer Boy’ Cover

Alanis Morissette released her take on the holiday classic “Little Drummer Boy” on Friday (Dec. 9) via Epiphany Music/Thirty Tigers.

For her rendition of the song made famous by the Harry Simeone Chorale in 1958, the alt-rock icon adds a flurry of floating harmonies, bell-like synths and the requisite snare drum as she rum-pum-pums her way through her cover of the 1951 yuletide tune. “Little baby, pa-rum-pum-pum-pum/ I am a poor girl too, pa-rum-pum-pum-pum/ I have no gift to bring pa-rum-pum-pum-pum/ That’s fit to give our king pa-rum-pum-pum-pum/ Ru-pu-pum-pum, ru-pu-pum-pum/ Shall I play for you, pa-rum-pum-pum-pum/ On my drum?”

“I played my best for you. #thedrummerboy #happyholidays #feelingitall #loveyou,” Morissette added on Instagram alongside a look at the single’s cover art, which shows her leaning her head on Mary’s shoulder as the Biblical figure cradles baby Jesus on California street lined with palm trees.

In November, Morissette turned down an invitation to perform at this year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, citing what she viewed as the industry’s “overarching anti-woman sentiment” and “disrespect of the feminine in all of us,” which she laid out in a no-holds-barred Instagram Story. (The singer was meant to duet on Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” with Olivia Rodrigo, who ended up performing the iconic 1972 kiss-off solo during the ceremony.)

Two months prior, though, Morissette was inducted — by Rodrigo, in fact — into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame along with the likes of David Foster, Bryan Adams, Jim Vallance and francophone legend Daniel Lavoie.
