Las Vegas Punk Rock Museum Opening Delayed Until March

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Wednesday (Dec. 21) that the Punk Rock Museum, slated to debut next month, will open its doors in March.

The 12,000-square-foot museum is situated between the Las Vegas Strip and downtown. It will include a bar, a tattoo parlor, a wedding chapel and a “jam room.”

Billboard Español: Three Months Old and Growing Fast

Exactly three months ago, on Sept. 22, we officially launched Billboard Español with Colombian star Camilo on our first digital cover. We started literally from zero.

Today, after only 90 days, we publish over 40 original stories per week to the site, boast over a quarter of a million monthly visits to billboardespanol.com and are growing our number of visits and users by 20% month to month.

Thanks to music fans who speak Spanish in every corner of the world, Billboard Español is a hit.

Given what we’ve attained in terms of numbers, it’d be logical to say that launching Billboard Español was a business decision. But this is, first and foremost, an initiative that comes from the heart.

When I came to work at Billboard, 20 years ago (yes, unreal), I felt my mission was to “translate” our music, our culture and our artists to the mainstream, English-speaking world. I looked around me and I couldn’t understand why major media companies ignored what happened musically in Spanish. The lack of interest extended to other areas, like film and television. We were virtually invisible. It felt like language was an unbreachable barrier.

But in Billboard I found a powerful tool: a media brand that was recognized as the “Bible” of the music industry. And within it, a platform where I could constantly generate content about Latin music and its artists. We devoted the last two decades to growing this platform and opening the eyes and ears of our readers to the sounds of our artists.

From one a column a week, we went to a page, several pages, a Latin department and a wide array of coverage that includes a vast menu of videos, social media and reporters in the Latin world, in addition to the Billboard Latin Music Awards and, of course, our unparalleled Billboard Latin Music Week.

We’ve had more than 40 Latin artists on the cover of Billboard and we’ve made history. We were the first English-language media brand to have a reggaeton star on its cover (Daddy Yankee in 2005), the first and only to have J Balvin and Nicky Jam together on a cover, and the first to join Jennifer Lopez with Maluma. The list goes on and on. This year alone, Romeo Santos, Maluma, Grupo Firme and Sebastian Yatra — four artists representing four different Latin music genres — were on our cover, in addition to Camilo.

The final flourish, of course, was Bad Bunny on the cover of our No. 1s issue. Not only was he the first Latin artist to ever grace our No. 1 cover issue, but he was also the first artist to be featured on simultaneous Billboard covers in English and Spanish.

Billboard Español is the latest link in this long chain of achievements, and it’s perhaps the most significant, for we are covering Latin music in two languages. In addition to our extraordinary Latin music team, we’ve built an excellent editorial team for Billboard Español, with Sigal Ratner-Arias, a respected veteran of entertainment and music reporting, as deputy editor.

We are literally creating a new way of covering music, in our language.

Today, Spanish is the second most-spoken language in the United States; according to the U.S. Census, more than 41 million people speak it at home. And music in Spanish is the second most listened to music in the world, only after music in English.

That means that for 2023, there is only room for us to grow, expanding our coverage of Latin music on all our Billboard platforms, including Billboard Español.

The best is yet to come!

The new performers include Liily, Fletcher and Dolly Parton, the latter of whom will be co-hosting the event with her goddaughter.

The New Year’s Eve special will also feature special appearances from Saturday Night Live’s Chloe Fineman and Sarah Sherman as well as comedy trio Please Don’t Destroy. Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party is set to air Dec. 31 on NBC live from Miami.

During the “Prisoner” singer’s appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Dec. 11, she previously revealed the first three people scheduled to appear on the special. “Sia is coming. She’s one of my favorite artists,” Cyrus told Fallon. “We have Latto,” she continued, adding that “Rae Sremmurd, who are friends of mine,” will be appearing.

“As we get closer to the show, I want to start revealing who else we have. But the lineup is very me. It is curated in a way that makes no sense, but makes total sense,” Cyrus explained.

The Hannah Montana star got her Smilers excited on Dec. 19 when she tweeted “NEW YEAR, NEW MILEY,” leading some fans to believe a new album will arrive in 2023, though additional details have yet to be confirmed.

JoJo Siwa Shades Avery Cyrus for Using Her After Breakup: ‘There Was Nothing to Gain Anymore’

More shots fired! JoJo Siwa made quite the accusation about her recent breakup with Avery Cyrus in a new TikTok on Tuesday.

Using a viral sound taken from the “My Brother My Brother and Me” YouTube channel, the former Dance Moms star revealed what she was really trying to say onscreen. “But I love you Why are you breaking up with me??!!!” she wrote before offering up two different options: “There’s someone else” and, uh, “You told one of my best friends that you were excited to be dating me bc you’re ‘growing your career and wanna get to the top’…”

By the end of the lip-synced clip, Siwa makes it clear that the reason for her split was, well, not a third party. She also added some dramatic context in the video’s caption, writing, “And when I said I just wanted to be friends so I didn’t lead you on after an unplanned hookup you wanted nothing to do with me because there was nothing to gain anymore.”

The TikTok comes just one day after the Nickelodeon star vented about the breakup in an Instagram Story posted by her mother, Jessalynn Siwa, in which she claimed she “got used…For views and for clout” by the TikToker during their three-month relationship. “I got tricked into being told I was loved and I got f—ing played,” she added.

Though she has yet to offer an opinion on the latest TikTok, Cyrus responded to Siwa’s Instagram accusations, saying she was “saddened and confused by the situation” in a statement to E! News.

Billboard Airplay Tracking Week to Shift to Friday-Thursday Beginning With Charts Dated Dec. 31

Billboard will shift its airplay chart tracking week for all radio formats to Friday-through-Thursday beginning with Luminate-based charts dated Dec. 31. The schedule will switch from the Monday-through-Sunday tracking week previously used for all individual formats.

The all-format Radio Songs chart, which contributes to the all-genre, multi-metric Billboard Hot 100, already uses a Friday-through-Thursday tracking week, having segued to that schedule in July 2021.

Moving charts to a Friday-through-Thursday tracking period will align airplay with the streaming and sales tracking week, and allow for visible building chart tracking, within Luminate’s Music Connect platform, which operates under that song consumption timeline.

The dates for making the airplay chart tracking week change for all formats are as follows:

Charts finalized Monday, Dec. 19 and updated on Billboard.com Tuesday, Dec. 20 (dated Dec. 24) used data from Monday, Dec. 12 through Sunday, Dec. 18 (marking the last charts reflecting a Monday-through-Sunday tracking week).

Charts finalized Friday, Dec. 23 and to be updated on Billboard.com Wednesday, Dec. 28 (dated Dec. 31) will use data from Friday, Dec. 16 through Thursday, Dec. 22 (marking the first charts reflecting a Friday-through-Thursday tracking week).

The Friday-through-Thursday tracking week will continue to be used for airplay charts finalized Friday, Dec. 30 and to be updated on Billboard.com Wednesday, Jan. 4 (dated Jan. 7), using data from Friday, Dec. 23 through Thursday, Dec. 29, and for each week thereafter.

As previously reported, data and insights company Luminate, which provides data for Billboard’s charts, has partnered with airplay monitoring service Mediabase, and the latter’s radio tracking data began fueling Billboard surveys reflecting airplay activity dated Nov. 12. (Click here for more information, via Luminate, about the BDS/Mediabase transition, for Luminate subscribers with access to Luminate’s Music Connect platform.)

Along with Radio Songs, Billboard’s United States-based airplay charts encompass: Pop Airplay (Mainstream Top 40); Adult Pop Airplay (Adult Top 40); Adult Contemporary; Country Airplay; Rock & Alternative Airplay; Alternative Airplay; Adult Alternative Airplay (Triple A); Mainstream Rock Airplay; R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay; Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay; Adult R&B Airplay; Rap Airplay; Rhythmic Airplay; Latin Airplay; Regional Mexican Airplay; Latin Pop Airplay; Latin Rhythm Airplay; Tropical Airplay; Christian Airplay; Christian AC Airplay; Gospel Airplay; Dance/Mix Show Airplay; Smooth Jazz Airplay; and the seasonal Holiday Airplay chart.

All Billboard charts, viewable here, regularly update on Billboard.com each Tuesday.

Emilia, El Alfa & More: The Most-Viewed ‘Live With Billboard Latin’ Episodes of 2022

After the pandemic quarantine lifted, the Billboard Latin team continued its tradition of hosting interviews via Instagram Live, resulting in our social media franchise “Live with Billboard Latin.” Moderated biweekly on Thursdays, the Billboard Latin editors invited some of today’s hottest music acts for a 15- to 30-minute interview about their current projects, as well as to answer fan questions.

The series kicked off with CNCO, who spoke to us about their exciting plans for 2022, and later on in the year, we caught up with the Latin boy band at the Latin American Music Awards. Throughout the year, fans connected on Instagram with artists such as Mexican sisters Ha*Ash, who talked about their comeback tour; Latin pop crooner Mario Bautista, who celebrated his first-ever Billboard hit; Puerto Rican perreo duo Jowell & Randy, who premiered their single “Toro”; and most recently, Argentine rapper Trueno, who shared his excitement with Argentina headed to the World Cup finals.

With many exciting “Live with Billboard Latin” episodes, we have compiled the most-viewed interviews this year, which include our chat with Argentine singer Emilia Mernes, a laid-back conversation with Tokischa and Ozuna, and of course, CNCO. Below, see the top episodes from our 2022 live interviews:

Chance the Rapper & Vic Mensa to Bring Free Music Festival to Ghana

When Chance the Rapper visited West Africa earlier this year, he initially thought his trip with fellow Chicago hip-hop artist Vic Mensa would be just another vacation getaway.

Instead, the Grammy winner connected with Mensa’s father’s family in Ghana and other natives from the Motherland on a deeper level. He saw Ghana’s beautiful ocean coastline and waterfalls, engulfed himself in the musical culture and art scene and learned more about the country’s rich history of being the first sub-Saharan African country to free itself from colonialism.

After a couple more trips to Ghana, Chance decided to create a free concert series and visual arts show so others could experience the country’s vibrant culture just like he did. During the summer, Chance and Mensa brought eight students from Chicago to Ghana to learn more about Africa.

“I felt so free in Ghana. .. and I want others to feel the same way,” said Chance, who along with Mensa will host the inaugural Black Star Line festival in Accra, Ghana, in 2023. The weeklong festival will feature events, panel discussions and a free concert on Jan. 6 with performances by Chance, Mensa, Erykah Badu, T-Pain, Jeremih, Sarkodie, Tobe Nwigwe, Asakaa Boys and M.anifest.

The event will be held in Accra’s Black Star Square, a monument to the political freedom that was won by Ghanaians in 1957. The festival’s title was inspired by civil rights leader Marcus Garvey’s Black Star Line, which was founded in 1919 and operated by Black people who helped link global shipping and tourism opportunities between America, the Caribbean and Africa.

Garvey inspired Chance’s music video “ YAH Know, ” featuring King Promise, and his upcoming album “Star Line Gallery,” which is expected for release next year. He’s already released a few other new music videos — such as “ Child of God,” “ A Bar About a Bar ” and “ The Highs & Lows ” with Joey Bada$$ — in which he calls “album art” to highlight popular artists in Africa.

Chance said Naila Opiangah ’s art piece for “Child of God” will be on display at the festival. He said his new “songs are candid realities of Black life.”

“Artists have amazing graphics and album covers and single artworks that are made by great artists every day that’s released,” he said. “But the only time you get to see it is on this little inch-by-one inch depiction of it. These pieces are painted by world class artists. The ability to go see those pieces and interact with them in real life kind of adds people’s understanding of the music.”

Through his festival, Chance says he wants to bridge the gap between Black people abroad and Africa.

“I think that specifically the story of the founder’s independence is something that all black people should know,” he said “There are no free sub-Saharan African countries until 1957. I think they should know about the revolutionary leaders on the continent and abroad. I think that if we had this connectedness and this interaction, people will actually have a chance to see this.”

Initially, it was tough gaining commitments from big-name music artists to travel and perform in West Africa. With few sponsors, much of the expenses to fund the free concert were out-of-pocket.

But Chance’s team found a way to make the trip more affordable for travelers through a partnership with United Airlines, which is offering discount fares to Ghana for a year.

It’s taken a lot of work to organize the event in such a short time, but Chance believes this festival could live on successfully for the next 50 years. In the future, he wants to host the festival in other countries, such as Jamaica and Haiti.

But for now, Chance’s focus has been on attracting more people to Ghana, a place he can envision his family living after his daughters head to college.

“I wish I could live there right now,” said the rapper, who has lived in Chicago his whole life. “I want people to see the convergence and similarities in all of these Black lives.”

Justin Bieber Merch Pulled by H&M After Star Claims Products Were Unauthorized

H&M has reportedly pulled a collection of Justin Bieber-inspired merchandise following the pop star’s claims that the products were not approved.

“Out of respect for the collaboration and Justin Bieber we have removed the garments from our stores and online,” the retail clothing company said in a statement, the BBC reported Wednesday (Dec. 21).

On Monday, Bieber wrote on his Instagram Story that H&M was selling unapproved items featuring his image and song lyrics. The products, which appeared on the company’s website, included a tote bag, a sweatshirt, a sweatshirt dress, and more.

“I DIDNT APPROVE ANY OF THE MERCH COLLECTION THAT THEY PUT UP AT H&M,” the 28-year-old singer wrote, adding that it was done “all without my permission and approval SMH I WOULDNT BUY IT IF I WERE YOU.”

“The H&M MERCH THEY MADE OF ME IS TRASH AND I DIDNT APPROVE IT DONT BUY IT,” Bieber emphasized in a second Instagram Story.

Billboard received a statement from H&M on Monday evening, noting that the company had received permission to sell the products.

“As with all other licensed products and partnerships, H&M followed proper approval procedures,” an H&M representative wrote.

Billboard has reached out to reps for Bieber and H&M for further comment.

Kid Cudi Says The Scotts Album With Travis Scott Is No Longer Happening: ‘The Moment Has Passed’

On Wednesday (Dec. 21), Kid Cudi shut down the idea of a collaborative album with Travis Scott.

A fan posed the question directly to the rapper on Twitter, asking, “Is The Scotts album still on the cards?” after Cudi tweeted that he was “workin on something special” for his fans and promised he’d have “more news next year!”

“Naw I’m not doin that,” Cudi said in reference to The Scotts album, adding, “The moment has passed.”

The super-duo first dropped their single “The Scotts” back in spring 2020. With the track debuting atop the Hot 100 upon its release, Cudi earned his first-ever No. 1 on the chart, while Scott notched his third after “Sicko Mode” and “Highest in the Room.”

More than a year later, Cudi confirmed via Twitter that he and Scott were planning to record a full album under their new moniker, claiming it would happen eventually though he wasn’t sure when.

Of course, since then the “Day N Nite” rapper has released his long-awaited album Entergalactic, embarked on his career-best To the Moon Tour across North America, and hinted that he’s nearing the end of his music career — though not before recording one final album for his fans.

Scott, meanwhile, has remained embroiled in the legal fallout from the deadly crowd crush at his 2021 Astroworld Festival, which left 10 attendees dead and hundreds more injured. He also recently dropped a new Nike collaboration and directed Future’s “712PM” music video.
