The song, released Jan. 20 on her EP Like..? via Dolo/TenThousand Projects/Capitol Records, opens with 5.1 million U.S. streams, 727,000 radio airplay audience impressions and 3,000 downloads sold in its first week (ending Jan. 26), according to Luminate. It also debuts at Nos. 16 and 32 on the multi-metric Hot Rap Songs and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts, respectively.

Like..? concurrently starts at No. 13 on Top Rap Albums, No. 19 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and No. 37 on the all-genre Billboard 200 with 15,000 equivalent album units earned.

Ice Spice (real name Isis Gaston), who hails from the Bronx, is a newcomer to Billboard’s charts. She charted one track prior to “Gangsta Boo”: Her breakout hit “Munch (Feelin’ U)” reached No. 25 on Hot Rap Songs and No. 34 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs last September/October. It also peaked at No. 19 on Rap Airplay, No. 23 on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, No. 27 on Rhythmic Airplay and No. 28 on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay. Meanwhile, thanks to attention surrounding her new release, “Munch” surged by 67% to 2.3 million U.S. streams Jan. 20-26.

Notably, “Gangsta Boo” samples Diddy and Ginuwine’s “I Need a Girl (Part Two),” featuring Loon, Mario Winans and Tammy Ruggieri. The classic hit No. 4 on the Hot 100 in 2001.

“Gangsta Boo” is also a tribute to the late rapper of the same name. The Memphis-based rapper (born Lola Mitchell), who was a member of Three 6 Mafia, died Jan. 1 at age 43.

Another Ice Spice breakout track also debuts on multiple charts: “In Ha Mood,” also on Like..?, enters at No. 24 on Hot Rap Songs and No. 43 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.

Anointed Billboard‘s October R&B/Hip-Hop Rookie of the Month, Ice Spice shared that Lil Tjay, who also hails from the Bronx, is her go-to artist for advice. “We like to chat a lot,” she said. “[He] actually goes through similar situations. It helps a lot to be able to talk to somebody and just vent and for them to be like, ‘This is what I did when that happened to me.’ And learning from their mistakes, too.”

Ice Spice says that her inspiration for the new EP comes from Nicki Minaj, Lil Kim, Cardi … “all the greats. I’m definitely inspired by Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu. But I definitely want to like have my own lane, where like, it’s just mine, and not like really copying somebody.”

Metro Boomin on Why Being in Budweiser Super Bowl Commercial Is a ‘Golden Opportunity’ for Him

Two months after the release of his Billboard 200-topping album Heroes & Villains, Metro Boomin is continuing his hot streak by partnering with Budweiser for Super Bowl LVII.

Reintroducing its tagline “This Bud’s for You,” the hip-hop superproducer will feature in the beer company’s “Six Degrees of Budweiser” commercial airing during the big game. The spot will kick off a new focus for the brand by reaching a younger audience and depicting authentic, first-hand experiences that shows the importance of human connection, determination and the American spirit.

The commercial, narrated by Kevin Bacon, is Budweiser’s interpretation of the idea that everyone can be traced by six degrees of separation. From Metro to a local food truck owner and construction worker, each individual is connected by their determination, spirit and a six-pack of Budweiser, which is passed from person-to-person until one beer remains. The final beer is then offered to the viewer, hence “this Bud’s for you.”

While Metro (born Leland Wayne) isn’t necessarily a beer drinker, the opportunity to partner with Budweiser for the Super Bowl felt like a step up in his career and a full-circle moment for him given his ties to St. Louis.

“Budweiser being in St. Louis and me being born and raised in St. Louis and always representing and speaking out for [the city], I saw it as a golden opportunity,” he told Billboard. “A lot of my closest friends growing up, some of my family and everybody like… Bud’s always been around. I remember going to the Anheuser-Busch factory, we had a field trip there when I was a kid. That just goes to show you how big of an impact Budweiser has always had on the whole city, even from the original Busch Stadium.”

Metro said he also resonated with the six degrees of separation concept since “that’s how I live my everyday life. I do everything regular, I’ve always been regular, I aspire to always be how I’ve always been because that’s how I see all of us We have our differences, but I feel like we’re more all the same more than anything,” he says humbly.

Back in December, the Grammy-nominated producer released his highly anticipated second solo album Heroes & Villains — creating his own sonic universe of good guys and bad guys via collaborators like 21 Savage, Travis Scott, Future, Young Thug and more, who were turned into comic book sketches for the project’s rollout. Metro also dropped a short film starring himself and Morgan Freeman, whom he met for the first time in-person while filming the movie. (Metro and Freeman first worked together when the veteran actor narrated the producer and 21 Savage’s 2020 joint album Savage Mode 2.)

“That’s how I do my art. Put the younger generation and the older one and my generation, just everybody in the same car,” he explained. “On Heroes & Villains, it was like, ‘OK, what if we can get him on-camera and actually shoot something with him?’ because it’s like how do you level up? I thought that might be a little far-fetched, but he was down for that too!”

The album earned Metro his third No. 1 on the Billboard 200, along with all 15 tracks debuting on the Billboard Hot 100, including “Creepin’,” which currently sits at No. 4. The song, which features The Weeknd and 21, is a re-creation of Mario Winans’ 2004 hit “I Don’t Wanna Know.” While clearing the sample wasn’t easy, Metro said the track’s success is exceeding his expectations.

“I can’t say this about a lot of songs because I just try to make stuff that I love and hope it resonates with other people, but it’s really a rare occasion to where even after we made [‘Creepin”]. It was like, ‘OK. I know this is gonna go up,’” Metro said. “Not just because of me or because of The Weeknd, but also with it halfway being a cover of a song that I loved so much growing up, and just know how much it worked before [and] it getting a new spin for the next generation.

“Mario Winans is like a big brother to me, he helped out with some other stuff on the album, so on that end, we had all the love and support,” he continued. “On the end of the original sample, even before the Fugees’ [‘Ready or Not’], it was the Enya song [‘Boadicea’]. There was just a small hiccup in the road. We ended up getting it cleared, but they just had us change the name.”

The 29-year-old is already back in the lab, saying he plans to drop the villain’s version of the album in “probably like a week or two.” He also created a custom song that will be played in the Budweiser commercial.

“With my career, my head’s always down. I’m always working so I’m not always looking back like, ‘Oh, this album did this or this happened,’ you know?” he said. “Just like in the gym, I feel like this Super Bowl commercial is like when you start to see some gains. It’s one of them things where you can see [my] growth.”

Coldplay Are Finishing Work on Their Next Album, ‘Moon Music’

If you thought all Coldplay were doing over the past year was selling out multiple nights at stadiums across the planet, think again. Singer Chris Martin revealed in an interview with Toronto’s City News that the group is nearing completion of the follow-up to their 2021 album, Music of the Spheres.

“We’re finishing an album called Moon Music,” Martin told the outlet, “which is the second Music Of The Spheres volume, but that won’t come out for a little bit.” And while the wait is a bummer, Martin added that Coldplay “might” start playing some of the songs live “at some point this year.”

Martin would not reveal if their 10th studio album will feature any guest stars, but in his classic self-deprecating fashion, when the reporter suggested she would gladly sit in on xylophone, play the three guitar chords she knows or add terrible backing vocals if needed, he joked that she was precisely the problem. “You’re going to make us look bad,” he said.

“This is the trouble… we’ve had some amazing guests on albums recently and tours. But it’s always slightly deflating because you realize, ‘Oh, this person is so much more talented,’” Martin laughed, pointing to Spheres tour opening act H.E.R. as a “primary example” of someone who is just on a “different level of talent.” Spheres featured guests Selena Gomez (on “Let Somebody Go”), We Are King and Jacob Collier (“Human Heart”) and BTS on the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 “My Universe” with BTS.

After launching the Spheres tour on March 18, 2022 is Costa Rica, Coldplay just added a series of new North American dates later this year, slated to kick off at Seattle’s Lumen Field on Sept. 20 and wind down on Oct. 1 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. The band will also be the musical guests on this weekend’s (Feb. 4) episode of Saturday Night Live with first-time host Pedro Pascal.

Sam Smith’s ‘Gloria’ Heading to No. 1 in U.K.

It’s shaping to be a glorious week for Sam Smith, as their fourth studio album Gloria (Capitol) leads the race for the U.K. chart crown.

Gloria is projected to debut at No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart, following the Brit’s previous leaders In The Lonely Hour (from 2014) and The Thrill Of It All (2017).

Featuring the No. 1 hit single “Unholy,” a collaboration with Kim Petras, Gloria leads the Official Chart Update. It’s the followup to 2020’s Love Goes, which peaked at No. 2 in Smith’s homeland.

Smith isn’t the only artist eyeing a splashing debut. Bob Dylan is on track for a No. 2 start with Fragments – Time Out Of Mind Sessions Volume 17 (Sony Music CG), the latest instalment in the songsmith’s Bootlegs series, which collates new mixes, outtakes and rarities from sessions from 1997’s Time Out Of Mind, an album that peaked at No. 10 in the U.K. Fragments is set to become Dylan’s 42nd appearance in the U.K. top 10.

Further down the list, Albanian-American pop artist Ava Max is heading for a No. 5 debut with Diamonds & Dancefloors (Atlantic), her sophomore album. It’s the followup to 2020’s Heaven & Hell, which peaked at No. 2.

Meanwhile, new recordings from English prog-rocker veterans Uriah Heep (Chaos & Colour at No. 19 via Silver Lining Music) and U.S. rapper Lil Yachty (Let’s Start Here at No. 32 via EMI) are heading for the top 40.

Finally, just days after Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic landed a string of Academy Award nominations, the King of Rock & Roll is making a move on the U.K. chart. Elvis Presley’s Elv1s – 30 Number 1 Hits (RCA) lifts 23-20 on the chart blast, and Elvis On Tour (Sony Music CG), a six-CD, one-Blu-ray box set capturing performances from Elvis’ 1972 North America tour, is set to bow at No. 43. Elvis is nominated for eight Oscars, including best picture; it also earned a best actor nomination for Austin Butler, who portrayed Presley.

The Official U.K. Albums Chart is presented late Friday.

Miley Cyrus’ ‘Flowers’ Powers to Lead on Midweek U.K. Chart

Based on midweek data captured by the OCC, the highest new entry on the chart proper could belong to KSI and Oliver Tree with “Voices” (Atlantic). It’s on track for a No. 11 debut, for what would be KSI’s 18th and Tree’s third top 40 appearance.

Sydney-raised, Los Angeles-based singer and rapper The Kid LAROI is also targeting a top tier debut with his new track, “Love Again” (Columbia). It’s new at No. 22 on the Official Chart Update, for what should be the artist’s fifth top 40 appearance. “Love Again” is the second cut from the Kid’s forthcoming debut album, The First Time, which is set for release later this year.

Meanwhile, Miguel’s 2010 single “Sure Thing” (Jive) continues to enjoy a renaissance after going viral on TikTok. It’s up 13-7 on the Chart Update. The track entered the top 10 for the very first time last week, nearly 13 years after it originally dropped.

Further down the chart blast, singles by Tiësto and Tate McRae (“10:35” up 14-13 via Atlantic/Ministry of Sound), Cian Ducrot (“I’ll Be Waiting” up 19-18 via Polydor), Mimi Webb (“Red Flags” up 22-19 via Epic) and Coi Leray (“Players” up 37-20 via Uptown/Republic Records) are on the climb.

All will be revealed when the Official Charts are published late Friday.

NCT 127 Say ‘Ay-Yo’ for Sleek New Single: Watch

Last fall, NCT 127 teased the possibility of a deluxe repackaging of their 2 Baddies album by telling Billboard to “look forward to being surprised by something unexpected.” Four months after the LP earned the K-pop boy band their second top 3 entry on the Billboard 200, the group unveils their Ay-Yo – The 4th Album Repackage album with three new songs, including the sleek title track single.

While NCT 127’s previous title track “2 Baddies” seized listeners’ attention with its unrelenting chant chorus, the group’s latest takes a much more subtle approach with looping beats, delicate piano accents, and a surging, synthesizer-led chorus. Like they teased last year, the guys themselves also bring out unexpected musical moments in “Ay-Yo,” like when the silky-voiced vocalist Jaehyun kicks off the second verse with a rap section.

The accompanying music video is a mash of surprise delights too. Members like Doyoung and Jaehyun serve their best James Bonds with slick black outfits among a backdrop reminiscent of inside a pistol barrel as made famous in the 007 movies.

Meanwhile, leader Taeyong pulls off what will be one of 2023’s most shocking hairstyles with punky, pointy spikes that fans have found reminiscent of NCT label mates and K-pop pioneers TVXQ! and Super Junior.

In between the release of 2 Baddies and Ay-Yo, NCT 127 released a music video for their b-side “1, 2, 7 (Time Stops)” and held concerts in North America, Asia and Latin America as part of their Neo City – The Link world tour. The guys only wrapped their last show on Jan. 28 at Mexico City’s Palacio de los Deportes arena before dropping this new LP that includes its title track, the previously teased “DJ” plus hip-hop/pop hybrid “Skyscraper.”

Watch Taeyong, Doyoung, Jaehyun, Taeil, Mark, Yuta, Johnny, Jungwoo and Haechan in “Ay-Yo” below.

Muni Long Translates ‘Hrs & Hrs‘ Into Spanish for ‘Horas y Horas’

Muni Long released the Spanish version of her single “Hrs & Hrs” on Monday (Jan. 30) as part of her new Spotify Singles.

With The Avila Brothers taking the reins on production, the Spanish-language track finds the rising R&B star asking, “¿Pero te puedo cantar…en español?” (i.e. “But can I sing to you…in Spanish?”) before launching into the sultry groove.

“Lo tuyo, es mío, ahora/ Puedo hacer esto por horas/ Sentar y hablarte aquí por horas/ Regalarte unas rosas/ Nos bañamos en las olas/ De champaña y una cena/ Pero eres tu que me devoras,” she croons, roughly translating the sentiments of the 2022 slow jam, which was named one of Billboard‘s best R&B songs of the last year.

As part of the Spotify Singles, Long also gave The Carpenters’ 1971 classic “Superstar” a rhythmic spin, not unlike Luther Vandross’ famous cover, singing, “Long ago and oh, so far away/ I fell in love with you before the second show/ And your guitar, it sounds so sweet and clear/ But you’re not really here, it’s just the radio/ Don’t you remember, you told me you loved baby/ You said you’d be comin’ back this way again, baby/ Baby, baby, baby, baby, oh baby/ I love you, I really do.”

Long is currently nominated for best new artist at the upcoming 2023 Grammy Awards, while “Hrs & Hrs” picked up nods for both best R&B performance and best R&B song. Ahead of the telecast this Sunday, she was celebrated with a special event at the Grammy Museum.

The model took to her Instagram Stories on Monday (Jan. 30) to share a video in which she’s seen attempting to breastfeed her daughter Esti while her four-year-old son Miles sits next to her on the couch counting. When Teigen began recording, Miles was at number 91 and throughout the course of three IG Stories, he made it to number 174 (accidentally skipping 173 along the way) while the Cravings author gets visibly more bored.

Watch the Stories before they disappear here.

Billboard confirmed that John Legend and Teigen had welcomed their third child together on Friday (Jan. 13), and a few days later, the couple shared a photo of Miles and six-year-old daughter Luna holding their newborn sister, who is wrapped in a fuzzy white blanket. “She’s here!” Teigen captioned the photo. “Esti Maxine Stephens.”

“The house is bustling and our family could not be happier,” she continued. “Daddy sheds nightly tears of joy seeing Luna and Miles so full of love, and I am learning you still need diapers with a c section!?”

Word that Esti had arrived first spread after Legend, performing at a private concert, told attendees that he was now a dad of three. “What a blessed day,” he reportedly said at the time, remarking that he’d spent a lot of time at the hospital and hadn’t gotten much sleep ahead of the event. Still, he said he felt “energized” after the baby’s birth.
