“As an iconic female Regional Mexican artist, whose body of work continues to be an indomitable inspiration for the creative community, we’re thrilled to name Ana Bárbara a BMI Icon,” Gonzalez said in a statement. “Dubbed as La Reina Grupera, she has forged a career that spans decades. Her artistic achievements have paved the way for the next generation of female songwriters in the genre and earned the respect of the industry at large as one of the most groundbreaking songwriters of all time. For that, we salute Ana as a true icon and look forward to celebrating all our top music creators behind some of today’s most-performed Latin songs.”

The “Bandido” singer joins an elite group of artists who have received BMI’s highest honor including Carlos Santana, Gloria Estefan, Juan Luis Guerra, Los Tigres Del Norte and Los Lobos, among others. Throughout her 30-year career — which she kicked off in the early ’90s with her self-titled debut album in 1994 — Ana Bárbara has a total of 16 entries on Billboard‘s Hot Latin Songs, four of those are top 10 hits including “La Trampa” and “Me Asusta Pero Me Gusta.” On the Regional Mexican Airplay tally, she’s entered 21 songs, five of which hit the top 10.

During the event, BMI will also recognize the songwriters and publishers of the past year’s most-performed Latin songs in the U.S. The BMI regional Mexican song, songwriter, BMI contemporary Latin song, songwriter and BMI contemporary Latin and regional Mexican publisher of the year will also be named during the ceremony.

The album, titled On Top of the Covers, will see The Masked Singer season one winner giving the world his own renditions of Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come,” Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’,” Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show’s “Sharing The Night Together,” Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me,” Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey,” Frank Sinatra’s “That’s Life” (with a feature from NandoSTL) and Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs.”

T-Pain first teased the release of the project on Tuesday (Feb. 14) via Twitter. A fan of the rapper tweeted, “Anything that T-Pain covers or remixes is always so hard.” The Billboard Hot 100 hitmaker replied, “Buckle up because I got an announcement coming tomorrow.” He reposted the tweet exchange to his Instagram, adding a message to his followers to “Stay tuned.” A fan in the comments hilariously guessed, “T-Sinatra or Frank Pain,” which ended up being accurate.

On Top of the Covers will be released on March 17. To support the album release, the rapper also shared that he will be performing two back-to-back concerts at Los Angeles at the Sun Rose at Pendry West Hollywood on March 17-18. On Top of the Covers marks the rapper’s first album release since 2019’s 1UP.

Watch Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani’s Adorable Valentine’s Day Duet

That country kind of love. Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani celebrated Valentine’s Day on Tuesday (Feb. 14) with a romantic duet on social media.

In a black-and-white video posted to Shelton’s Twitter and Instagram feeds, the pair of lovebirds perform their 2019 duet “Nobody But You,” singing, “I don’t wanna live without you, I don’t wanna even breathe/ I don’t wanna dream about you, wanna wake up with you next to me/ I don’t wanna go down any other road now/ I don’t wanna love nobody but you/ Lookin’ in your eyes now, if I had to die now/ I don’t wanna love nobody but you.”

While the country star’s social team encouraged his followers to tag their valentines in the post, most opted to focus on The Voice coaches’ lovey-dovey relationship. “Find someone who looks at you like this two look at each other,” one fan wrote on Instagram, while another commented, “Happy Valentine’s Day to my favorite celebrity couple.” A third had an idea in mind in the wake of Rihanna’s epic Super Bowl performance, suggesting, “Blake and Gwen for the next Super Bowl halftime show!”

Shelton and Stefani most recently wrapped filming Season 22 of The Voice together, with the former winning his ninth season as a coach with champ Bryce Leatherwood. Team Gwen last won Season 19 with teen sensation Carter Rubin.

This spring, the “Hollaback Girl” singer is set to headline the 2023 BeachLife Festival in Redondo Beach, Calif., alongside The Black Keys and The Black Crowes.

Skrillex, Four Tet & Fred Again.. To Play Madison Square Garden This Weekend

Skirllex, Fred again.. and Four Tet will play Madison Square Garden this Saturday (Feb. 18). The show, announced today (Feb. 15), will serve as a large-scale celebration of Skrillex’s sophomore album, Quest For Fire, dropping this Friday (Feb. 17) on OWSLA/Atlantic Records.

Tickets for the show go on sale today at 1 p.m. ET. The MSG show will mark the biggest event that the trio have played together thus far, launching their b2b2b threesome last month at a trio of clubs in London and continuing the run last night at Good Room in Brooklyn.

“Last night in New York was so fun with my brothers Four Tet and Skrillex,” reads an email sent out today to Fred again..’s mailing list. “So due to popular demand we’re announcing another date, Madison Square Garden, on Saturday.” Skrillex also announced the set today via his Instagram.

The show marks a massive return of dance music to the iconic venue, which became a de facto dance scene hub during the EDM boom, hosting sold-out shows from era-defining acts including Swedish House Mafia and Jack Ü, Skrillex’s project with Diplo. This weekend’s show will mark both Four Tet and Fred again..’s debut appearances at MSG.

A press release notes that “this week is expected to be monumental for everyone involved in the project and fans who have been keeping up with recent events alike,” with attached imagery featuring the names of album collaborators including Justin Bieber, Porter Robinson, Missy Elliott and many more.

“Last night, the collision of the three artists’ styles was apparent from the jump; throughout the night you could confidently guess who was behind the selection of each track,” reads our review of the January show in London. “The hosts regularly interacted with the eager, Thursday night crowd, checking in by throwing a singular cordless mic between each other. At one point, Fred jumped on to the mic to ask, ‘Do you all have enough room to dance?’ His rhetorical question was answered by squeals and screams — not dissimilar to hysterical fans at a boy band concert. The sea of people rippled as one, as people stayed put on the dancefloor for the entire set.”

Lana Del Rey Posed Nude For the Original ‘Ocean Blvd’ Album Cover But ‘Got Nervous’

Lana Del Rey‘s upcoming album originally had a very different cover. While speaking with Billie Eilish for Interview Magazine in a Tuesday (Feb. 14) profile, the singer-songwriter revealed that the original cover for Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, her new album arriving March 24, was going to be a photo of her in the nude — but she ended up scrapping it for a couple reasons.

“My original cover was nude, then I thought about it, and I was like, maybe not right now, because there are some other things I want to do where I feel like that could get in the way,” she explained to Eilish. “The idea behind it was, instead of being exposed for things that weren’t true, I wanted to reveal something about myself that I actually thought was beautiful, but in the end, I got nervous about doing that because I was like, ‘Is this an artistic inspiration that came to me or is this a reaction to something I feel is critical about me?’

“I never liked to do anything in response to something that’s fear-based or based on what people think about me,” she continued. “I don’t know if that’ll ever come out, but if it did, I would just want to make sure it came out when I thought it was super fun and not because I had to show something to people.”

Designed by Neil Krug, the Ocean Blvd cover ended up being a blue-toned black and white image of Lana, lying on her stomach with ribbons in her hair, resting her head in her hand as she stares moodily at the camera. “I wanted to take my time and think about what I wanted to express in my face,” she said of the photo shoot.

“That part of the process was a little tumultuous, because I was feeling open, but then I closed down again and wanted to play it safe,” added the “A&W” singer. “But the good thing is that the songs are so wordy that if you listen to them carefully, they’re revealing in the same way the photo would’ve been. I was like, ‘Okay, I’ll let the songs do the talking for now.’”

Lana — this year’s Billboard Women in Music Visionary Award honoree — also bonded with Eilish about the throes of rising to fame and dealing with hate as young female artists. “Everyone gets their fair share of thinkpieces, but there were definitely some 60-page articles about me being the face of feminine submission and the pro-domestic whatever,” she recalled. “That was quite tough, because at the time, I was just trying to figure things out… For me, it was trial by fire,” she added. “It’s definitely a different era now.”

On the same day of the interview with Eilish, Lana released a seven-minute new song off Ocean Blvd called “A&W.” Listen here.

‘Grey’s Anatomy‘ Cast Members Lip Sync to Taylor Swift Tracks for Valentine’s Day: Watch

Looks like the love Taylor Swift has for Grey’s Anatomy is fully requited! On Tuesday (Feb. 14), several actors from the long-running medical drama hopped on Instagram for a special Valentine’s Day lip sync to some of Swift’s tracks.

Camilla Luddington and Chris Carmack — who play on-again-off-again couple Dr. Jo Wilson and Dr. Atticus “Link” Lincoln — were dressed in scrubs from the show and chose Midnights track “You’re On Your Own, Kid” for their lip sync: specifically choosing lines from the song that are more than applicable to their characters’ romantic tension.

“Summer went away/ Still, the yearning stays/ I play it cool with the best of them/ I wait patiently/ He’s gonna notice me/ It’s okay, we’re the best of friends/ Anyway,” the pair mouths, taking turns. “‘Happy’ Valentine’s Day #greysanatomy,” Luddington captioned the video, to which Carmack replied, “I don’t know about you… but I’m rooting for them!” adding a heart eyes emoji.

Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd also took park in the Swiftie shenanigans. The pair plays married couple Dr. Teddy Altman and Dr. Owen Hunt, and for their lip sync video, they traded Luddington and Carmack’s tension for exhaustion, lip syncing part of Swift’s Lover track “You Need to Calm Down.”

“@camillaluddington and @realcarmack are super cute this Valentine’s Day. I don’t think Teddy and Owen got the memo,” Raver captioned the video post.

Swifties, naturally, loved both posts from the Grey’s Anatomy actors. “The Swiftieism continues,” one fan wrote, while another exclaimed, “SWIFTIES CONFIRMED SO TRUE.”

Swift has yet to chime in but is famously a big fan of the show — she named one of her cats Meredith Grey, the character that actress Ellen Pompeo plays on the program. Pompeo was also invited to star in the music video for Swift’s “Bad Blood.”

No ‘Ceilings’: Lizzy McAlpine Is Folk-Pop’s Rising Dealer of Devastation

Lizzy McAlpine’s bucket list is a thing to behold. On Zoom from her L.A. home, the ascendant singer-songwriter holds her Notes app to the camera and begins scrolling. And scrolling.

This is no scatterbrained cluster of “maybe someday”s. No, this is a meticulously plotted ledger of life goals, dozens of lines deep. The achievements she’s yet to check off vary in prestige, from playing Coachella and winning a Grammy to creating a special Lizzy McAlpine taco at HomeState, the Los Angeles chain where Phoebe Bridgers concocted her own vegan dish last year.

A handful of goals have already been accomplished, courtesy of the tireless 23-year-old artist’s ascendence on social media and her arresting sophomore album, Five Seconds Flat. The 2022 LP corralled droves of new fans with its subtle folk-pop devastations, speckled with touches of jazz, R&B and notable features from FINNEAS and Jacob Collier. (It also broke her to a new level on streaming, with her catalog having now earned 245.6 million official on-demand U.S. streams, according to Luminate.)

Among the doleful tracks was “Ceilings,” a plot-twisty ballad of heart-stomping hallucinations, which has taken off on TikTok these last three months and proven the singer’s biggest breakout hit so far. Tens of thousands of videos using a sped-up version of “Ceilings” have amassed more than 235 million views, and translated to more than 30 million official on-demand U.S. streams.

While soaring numbers online are no guarantee for real-life ticket sales, McAlpine has had little trouble developing a devout IRL audience. Last fall, she knocked “headline a tour” off her list, playing mid-size clubs like The Troubadour in Hollywood and Webster Hall in New York. Now, her new roadshow kicking off in April is sold-out across the U.S. and filling the biggest rooms of her career so far — among them Terminal 5 and Brooklyn Steel in NY, the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and two nights at the 9:30 Club in Washington D.C.

“It’s a level up from the last tour in terms of venue size and also just production-wise, we’re kind of elevating everything, which is very exciting,” McAlpine says. “It becomes more of a theatrical production at this level, and that is very fun for me.”

“Theatrical” is apt for McAlpine, as her stark songwriting style merges the hyper-specific, heartrending lyrics of Bridgers or Olivia Rodrigo — stolen glances over 7-Eleven Slurpees, visions of McAlpine’s suburban Philadelphia-area upbringing — with the sweeping crests and falls of a Sara Bareilles Broadway score.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Bridgers and Bareilles are both admirers of McAlpine; each has DMed the newcomer, singing her praises. Bareilles tells Billboard she messaged McAlpine after watching McAlpine cover her tune “When He Sees Me,” from Broadway’s Waitress.

“As a writer, she has a great capacity to make very mundane experiences interesting and has an exceptionally detailed perspective,” Bareilles says. “It’s the great trick of great writing; specificity is universal.”

McAlpine has had plenty of practice, beginning to write songs on piano at age 12 and picking up the guitar a year or two later. She attended Berklee College of Music for two years — “a huge growing period for me as an artist and also as a human,” she says — before dropping out to pursue her career.

Her soft-treading debut LP Give Me a Minute was a promising start, but her career didn’t truly gain steam until the pandemic forced everyone inside. While some homebound musicians took time to regroup, McAlpine kept working, regularly live-streaming on Instagram, dropping singles and cultivating a committed audience on TikTok. It was there that a snippet of an unfinished song, called “You Ruined the 1975” — a relatable ode to exes who tarnish the bands we love, performed sitting on her bathroom floor —  was launched to viral heights in summer 2020, notching more than 8 million views and spurring countless covers.

“I couldn’t quite understand fully the gravity of it,” she says of her social media success. “I was just in my room alone. All I could see was a screen with a bunch of people saying, ‘Oh, this is so good.’ It didn’t really hit me until I toured for the first time, because I could actually see the people.”

Though McAlpine still regularly uses the app, she’s wary of associating herself too closely with the platform.

“I have a love/hate relationship with TikTok,” she says. “I feel like I can see the benefits of it, which is why I post. But if I didn’t have to post, I would not be posting on TikTok.”

Yet she cannot avoid the recent TikTok trend of mostly young women running down dark streets, wildly lip-syncing to the bridge of “Ceilings” as though their lives depend on it. The clips’ exaggerated drama contrasts with the understated desperation of tracks like “Erase Me” and “Hate to be Lame,” the latter track being short for a tragic apology: “Hate to be lame but I might love you.”

In terms of visuals to pair with her music, the artist much prefers longform treatments to bite-size morsels. Ever ambitious, McAlpine wrote a screenplay to accompany the release of Five Seconds Flat last April, which birthed the half-hour short film Five Seconds Flat, The Film, directed by Gus Black (Joshua Bassett, Deftones, Eels). In the film, which gracefully interweaves five songs from the album with dialogue, McAlpine stars as her younger self: anxious, lovelorn, searching for passion and identity. She’s excellent in the dramatic role, floundering through young romance’s brutal volatility, like a character from a Sally Rooney novel.

“[The film] was based on my first real relationship in high school,” she says. “And every time he would break up with me — like every other week — I felt like I was literally dying, like my soul was being ripped out of my body. So I just kind of channeled that.”

Sam Bailey, founder and managing director of Harbour Artists & Music and McAlpine’s manager, says he’s never worked with an artist so driven.

“She’s incredibly ambitious, proactive and prolific,” he says. “You can be the most talented artist in the world and never get out of bed in the morning, but she does. She wants to do a million things all at once – and wants to do them now.”

Naturally, McAlpine is already working on her next album. While no hard details are available, she’s happy to tease its direction.

“I feel like [Give Me a Minute] was close to what I think that I actually sound like. And then [Five Seconds Flat], I was trying to go as far away from that as possible, just to differentiate myself and not get stuck in the genre. … This [new] album won’t sound like the first album, but it’s definitely closer to what I think I actually sound like as an artist. It feels like the most authentic music I’ve ever written.”

While McAlpine hopes not to be pigeonholed, she doesn’t mind falling under the “sad girl” label, however, often assigned to her slightly older constituents like Bridgers and Julien Baker, and more recently Gracie Abrams and Holly Humberstone.

“I mean, it is sad — I write sad music,” she assures. “I don’t see that as a bad thing. I think that’s a powerful thing.”

Sting to Become a Fellow of The Ivors Academy

Sting will become an Academy Fellow, the highest honor The Ivors Academy bestows, at the 2023 Ivors, which will be presented at Grosvenor House in London on May 18.

Sting is the 23rd Fellow that the Academy has inducted in its 79-year history. He follows such songwriting greats as Sir Paul McCartney, Kate Bush, Joan Armatrading and Peter Gabriel. The latter received the award last year.

“Of all the awards in the world of music, The Ivors are for me, the most prestigious,” Sting said in a statement. “Songwriting is a skilled craft and The Ivors Academy are its guild. So, I am delighted and honoured to be offered this Fellowship of the Academy, joining and acknowledging this extraordinary group of fellow songwriters, and all of those who went before us.”

Sting has won seven Ivor Novellos, including their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. He was inducted into the New York-based Songwriters Hall of Fame that same year.

Sting has won 17 Grammys, including two in songwriting categories – the 1983 award for song of the year for “Every Breath You Take” and the 1991 award for best rock song for “The Soul Cages.” He won a 2002 Primetime Emmy for outstanding individual performance in a variety or music program for A&E in Concert: Sting in Tuscany…All This Time. In addition, he has been nominated for the two other EGOT awards. He has amassed four Oscar nods for best original song and a 2015 Tony nod for original musical score for The Last Ship.

Speaking on behalf of The Ivors Academy, Armatrading, Sting’s labelmate at A&M Records from the late ’70s into the early ’90s, said: “Across all of Sting’s work as a solo artist and with the iconic band The Police, he is without doubt one of the UK’s foremost successful songwriters and performers and is certainly deserving of one of the most prestigious awards in the music business. My huge congratulations on being made a Fellow of The Ivors Academy, Sting.”

Sting is managed by Martin Kierszenbaum of Cherrytree Music Company.

The Ivor Novellos, which were first presented in 1956, are judged by songwriters and composers from The Ivors Academy, the U.K.’s professional association for songwriters and composers. Past winners include Adele, Stormzy, Little Simz, Cathy Dennis, Annie Lennox, Amy Winehouse, Dave and John Lennon.

This year’s nominations will be announced on Tuesday April 18. The winners will be revealed at The Ivors on Thursday May 18.

The Ivors Academy also announced that Amazon Music is the new title sponsor of The Ivors as part of a multi-year, global deal. Amazon Music will bring music creators to the forefront through exclusive content offerings, as well as live performances, an immersive red carpet and backstage interviews that will be livestreamed on the Amazon Music UK Twitch channel in 2023.

Tom Gray, chair of The Ivors Academy, said, “Globally, songwriters are justly demanding the recognition that they deserve. As we push back against the historic undervaluing of the song and songwriter, we are delighted to collaborate with Amazon Music to celebrate songwriters, explore their craft and firmly place their value and originality at the centre of music. Together, we will make sure that The Ivors is recognised around the world as the most important celebration of songwriting.”

Amazon Music will integrate this year’s Rising Star nominees into their global developing artist program, Breakthrough, which provides long-term, customized global plans for emerging artists. This support includes video and audio content, global marketing, increased visibility across Amazon Music playlists and programming and high-profile Amazon Original tracks available only on Amazon Music.

Tom Winkler, head of songwriter, publisher and society relations for Amazon Music explains, “By globally amplifying the exceptional work of The Ivors Academy, Amazon Music will continue to celebrate songwriters and empower fans to discover the craft behind the music.”

To commemorate Sting’s honor, an unheard, Amazon Original demo of “If It’s Love,” taken from the musician’s most recent studio album, 2021’s The Bridge, is being released exclusively via Amazon Music. This is the seventh installment of the newly-launched demos program, which provides Amazon Music customers with the opportunity to hear demos of artists’ songs. Previous demo releases include songs by Walker Hayes and Maren Morris.

Robert Glasper Turned Chris Brown’s Grammy Insult Into a Golden Charity Opportunity

When they go low, Robert Glasper goes viral. The Grammy-winning pianist and producer/songwriter could have stewed about the static he got from Chris Brown after he bested the “Iffy” singer for this year’s best R&B golden gramophone and Brown griped, “Y’all playing. Who da f— is this?”

Instead of getting into a social media showdown with Brown, Glasper did something way better: he took the insult and printed it on a t-shirt while promising to donate the proceeds to a charity. On Tuesday (Feb. 14) Glasper announced that after just four days those shirts had sold out already.

“Thanks for the support. A portion of the proceeds from this shirt will be donated to the Community Music Center of New Orleans,” Glasper said in an Instagram post featuring an image of the black shirt emblazoned with Brown’s insult. “A nonprofit created to share the music culture and music education in New Orleans, providing free music lessons to underserved youth. I can’t thank y’all enough for supporting this cause.”

At press time Glasper had not announced how much was raised by the limited-edition shirts.

After an avalanche of social media critique for his fit of pique, Brown posted an apology 24 hours later, DMing Glasper to express regret for his comments. ““Congratulations my brother.. I would like to apologize if you took offense to my reaction at the Grammys,” Brown wrote. “You were not the intended target and I know I came off really rude and mean. After doing my research I actually think your amazing…THE ORGANIZATION ISN’T DOING US BLACKS OUR DUE DILIGENCE. YOU AND I SHOULD never be in the same [category].. two totally different vibes and genres. So from one black man to another.. CONGRATULATIONS. HOPE YOU ARE ABLE TO FEED YOUR FAMILY FOR LIFE. God bless my G.”

Glasper’s righteous dunk on Brown is just the latest example of a musician turning hate into delicious haterade. It came six months after Maren Morris flipped her feud with Jason Alden’s wife, Brittany, over the latter’s transphobic joke into a “Lunatic Country Music Person” t-shirt that raised money for LGBTQ right organization GLAAD; the effort raised more than $100,000 for GLAAD’s Transgender Media Program and Trans Life.
