A Timeline of Dolly Parton’s Good Deeds

Dolly Parton is not only talented, but she’s also charitable.

As the coronavirus began to spread worldwide in April 2020, the icon donated $1 million to the disease’s research at Vanderbilt University, which helped fund Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine. Data released this week shows that Moderna’s vaccine is 94.5% effective against coronavirus, marking the second vaccine with a high success rate.

But her coronavirus efforts are hardly the first time Parton has used her success for good. Beyond her support for the Black and LGBTQ+ communities, plus generous donations to the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes, Save the Music Foundation, the Boot Campaign and more, see below for a timeline of the country star’s biggest philanthropic efforts.

Harry Styles Officially Revives the ‘Banana Song,’ a Longtime Inside Joke With Fans

In 2021, Harry Styles unveiled the “Banana Song” onstage in Nashville, Tenn., warping the lyrics to “Watermelon Sugar” to shout out a fan in the audience dressed as, you guess it, a banana.

The sweet moment turned into a hilarious inside joke among Styles’ fans, affectionately known as Harries, who since then, often go to his shows dressed as various produce to catch the Grammy winner’s attention.

On Tuesday (Mar. 7), it worked. While performing at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand, Styles broke out into the “Banana Song” once again after spotting a few fans dressed as the yellow fruit. “She’s dressed as a banana / She’s dressed as a banana / Aye, aye aye,” he’s seen singing joyfully in a viral video posted by a fan to TikTok. Styles then sees a few more banana-dressed attendees and sings, “There’s two more bananas / Aye, aye, aye / One, two, three, four bananas / I can see a fifth banana.”

The “Banana Song” soon got an extended remix, thanks to some veggies in the audience. “There’s two people dressed up as peas / There’s two people dressed up as peas,” he sings, pointing to fans. “Is there anyone dressed as an aubergine? / Is there anyone dressed as an aubergine? / No, no, no, there’s not, there’s not an aubergine.”

Styles has just recently wrapped his Love on Tour dates in Australia and New Zealand, and will be heading to Asia in the next few weeks, stopping in Thailand, the Philippines, South Korea, Japan and more.

John Mellencamp Performs & Tells Farmers to ‘Keep Slugging’ at ‘Farmers for Climate Action’ Rally in D.C.

America’s farmers came to Washington, D.C., more than 40 years ago to save their farms. On Tuesday (March 7), a new generation of farmers, ranchers, farmworkers and activists came to the nation’s capital to save the planet.

John Mellencamp, co-founder of Farm Aid, sang Tuesday for those gathered before they marched up Pennsylvania Avenue to the U.S. Capitol building, calling for Congress to take action on climate change in the forthcoming Farm Bill.

“Here’s all I can say – keep slugging,” said Mellencamp, recalling how he and Willie Nelson and Neil Young formed Farm Aid in 1985 to support family farmers — a commitment they have sustained for four decades, joined by Farm Aid board members Dave Matthews and Margo Price.

“We’ve been slugging since 1985 and let’s keep slugging,” said Mellencamp. “Let’s try to improve the quality of the food that we eat, the air that we breathe and the people that we are.”

Taking the stage midday at Freedom Park, Mellencamp looked at the crowd before him and remarked: “The faces are much younger than they used to be. And I think that’s great that there are younger people trying to improve the planet and the food that we eat. So it’s up to you guys to lead the way.”

With that, Mellencamp played a spare, acoustic rendition of “Rain on the Scarecrow,” his harrowing 1985 song about the farm foreclosure crisis that led to the creation of Farm Aid.

Rain on the scarecrow / blood on the plow
This land fed a nation / this land made me proud
And son, I’m just sorry there’s no legacy for you now

Farm Aid’s own legacy is the rising awareness, since the mid-1980s, of the importance of a national system of agriculture that values family farmers, good food, soil and water, and strong communities.

In recent years, there also has been an increasing awareness that industrial agriculture practiced on large corporate farms is contributing to the climate crisis. In a report in August 2021, the National Resources Defense Council stated that industrial agriculture is a “significant source” of carbon in the atmosphere.

The farmers and activists in D.C. championed what is known as regenerative farming, agriculture methods that can hold carbon in the soil, enhance biodiversity and help mitigate climate change.

Farm Aid, with its annual concerts each September, may be the highest-profile organization drawing attention to the state of American agriculture — and Willie Nelson is certainly the nation’s best-known champion of family farmers. But this week’s gathering dramatically demonstrated that the breadth and scope of the nation’s farm movement transcends Farm Aid.

The Rally for Resistance: Farmers for Climate Action was organized under the umbrella of the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition and involved some 2 dozen activist organizations and more than 30 delegations of farmers from across the country who converged on Washington to make their voices heard.

On Wednesday, participants in the rally are slated to lobby individual lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

Plans for this rally were revealed at the Farm Aid festival in Raleigh, N.C., in September and exclusively reported by Billboard. The spark for the gathering is the current debate over the contents of the Farm Bill, the multi-part, multibillion-dollar legislation that is passed by Congress about every five years and has a massive influence on how the nation’s food is grown. The most recent Farm Bill was passed in 2018 and expires this year.

In September, Farm Aid joined more than 150 organizations in co-signing a letter asking President Biden “to weigh in on the next Farm Bill and demand that Congress build even further on the administration’s actions to date to reduce economic inequality; bridge the nation’s racial divides; end hunger; confront the climate crisis; improve nutrition and food safety; and protect and support farmers, workers, and communities,” wrote Farm Aid communications director Jennifer Fahy.

The evening before Mellencamp’s performance, supporters gathered at Luther Place Memorial Church on Logan Circle, a site of social activism since it was built in 1873. Philip Barker, a Black farmer and longtime activist from North Carolina, summed up the focus of the days of action: farmer-led climate solutions, racial justice in the Farm Bill, and “communities over corporations.”

Sessions during the rally began with land acknowledgements, statements recognizing that the land upon which the nation’s capital was built was taken from indigenous people. Other speakers addressed the particular hardships that BIPOC farmers have experienced through decades of U.S. farm policy. And still others called for immigration reform as a way to address the chronic shortage of labor on America’s farms. Throughout, the voices and crowd chants in Spanish testified to the changing demographics of the nation’s farms.

This gathering in Washington had particular resonance for David Senter, founder of the American Agriculture Movement. In 1979, Senter was one of the organizers of the Tractorcade protest that drew thousands of farmers to the capital. They traveled by tractor, traveling across the U.S. at 15 miles an hour — ”we came in on every East/West interstate, 100 miles a day,” recalls Senter — to lobby Congress for a new Farm Bill to increase crop prices and to have greater influence in agriculture policy. (One farmer at Tuesday’s rally returned with the tractor he’d driven to D.C. in 1979).

Senter then returned to Washington in 1987 to accompany Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp when the two artists testified before the Senate Agriculture Committee about the family farm foreclosure crisis.

Senter was one of the featured speakers Tuesday at the rally in Freedom Park. Since his earlier trips, have the stakes become higher? “We continue to lose family farmers and the farms become larger and larger,” replied Senter. “But we have to figure out how to make place for the next generation of farmers, the young farmers that want to grow food for this country and the world, so that they can survive.

That “absolutely does” include addressing the climate issue, said Senter. “Because we live in an extreme climate situation. I mean, you have floods, tornadoes, wildfires, droughts. It’s just unbelievable the climate extremes we’re experiencing and, of course, farmers, they deal with that every day, trying to produce food. So it’s very important that we get involved with that.”

When Willie Nelson and his fellow artists formed Farm Aid in 1985, he recruited Carolyn Mugar to run the organization. “The earliest Farm Aid files are all stained with spaghetti sauce since I did that work at my kitchen table,” she recalled Tuesday. Then she set off across the country, speaking to farmers at their kitchen tables. (Mugar was recognized for her work on Billboard’s Women in Music list in 2020, the 35th anniversary of Farm Aid).

“What in the Farm Bill can people get behind? Really, the very bottom line of everything is farm viability,” said Mugar. “A farmer cannot really even start getting into regenerative agriculture [to address climate change] if that farm is not financially viable.

“And that means that we’ve really got to look at how farming should be taking place in this country. And do we really want to continue corporate concentrated farming, where the land is toxic and ruined, into the future? Or do we want to support farmers who are trying to keep, maintain and build the soil?”

In dealing with the nation’s lawmakers, said Mugar, “we’ve got to get smarter about what we demand.”

Jimmy Fallon Says He’s Working on a Holiday Album

It may only be March, but Jimmy Fallon is already in the holiday spirit.

The late night host sat down with E! News this week, where he revealed that he has a festive-themed album on the way this year. “I’ve been working on one for a couple of years. It’s silly, there’s comedy songs, there’s traditional songs on there, there’s a couple of duets. It should be a good mix,” he explained.

Fallon is no stranger to getting in the Christmas spirit, and has often performed holiday songs on The Tonight Show with his famous friends. Back in 2021, he released a  pandemic-era holiday song “It Was A… (Masked Christmas)” alongside pop powerhouses Ariana Grande and Megan Thee Stallion.

“I didn’t want to do a Mariah Carey, ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ type of song, which is what everybody tries to do,” Fallon told Billboard‘s Pop Shop Podcast of the track. “I’m like, ‘Guys, she’s done it. She’s done it well. She nailed it. You can move away. No one’s going to top that song. She’s the queen. Let her have it. Think of a new idea.’”

Last year, Fallon teamed up with Dolly Parton for “Almost Too Early for Christmas,” a duet that ponders when is truly the right time to get into the holiday spirit.

Jamie Lee Curtis Asks: ‘Why Are There No Matinees’ for Concerts? ‘I Want to Hear Coldplay at 1 p.m.’

When Jamie Lee Curtis stopped by the Today show on Tuesday morning (March 7), she took a moment to advocate for early-bird concerts.

The topic came up when the Oscar nominee and noted early riser explained that she was planning to skip an Academy Awards dinner later this week due to it starting at 7:30 p.m. “What time would the dinner have had to have been for you to actually say yes?” anchor Savannah Guthrie asked, to which she confidently replied, “5.”

Eventually, the conversation turned to Curtis’ complaint about the late starting time for concerts and other live music events. “Why are there no matinees? I’m curious,” she said. “I would love to go see Coldplay. I would love it. The problem is, I’m not going to see Coldplay if they start their show at 9 and there’s an opening act. I want to hear Coldplay at 1 p.m.”

Of course, while most of the live-music circuit operates on a nighttime schedule, daytime concerts aren’t entirely unheard of. For example, after announcing their 25th-anniversary reunion tour across the U.K. last month, S Club 7 added a matinee show at London’s O2 arena on Oct. 28 when their back-to-back Friday and Saturday night shows at the famous venue sold out due to demand.

As for Curtis’ favorite band, Coldplay served as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live last month alongside host Pedro Pascal. During the episode, Chris Martin & co. performed “The Astronaut” and a choir-backed rendition of their 2005 song “Fix You,” though it’s safe to say Curtis was probably in bed by the time they took to the stage after midnight ET at Studio 8H.

Victoria’s Secret Is Bringing Back Its Fashion Show

It’s been five years since the last Victoria’s Secret fashion show in 2018, and the controversial lingerie company revealed this week that a “new version” of the catwalk is on the way.

“We’re going to continue to lean into the marketing spend to invest in a business both at top of funnel and also to support the new version of our fashion show,” VS’ chief financial officer Tim Johnson said during the company’s fourth quarter earnings call on Friday (March 3), according to USA Today.

In a follow-up statement, Victoria’s Secret added, “We are always innovating and ideating in all spheres of the business to continue to put our customer at the center of all we do and reinforce our commitment to championing women’s voices and their unique perspectives.”

The statement continued, “As we’ve previously shared, our new brand projection and mission will continue to be our guiding principle. This will lead us into new spaces like reclaiming one of our best marketing and entertainment properties to date and turning it on its head to reflect who we are today.”

Throughout the years, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show featured performances from A-list stars while the models showed off various lingerie designs. The Weeknd, Halsey, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Miguel, Selena Gomez, Ellie Goulding, Bruno Mars and Shawn Mendes are among the many artists to take the stage at the fashion show.

However, Victoria’s Secret has faced controversy due to its lack of model inclusivity as well as its male gaze-focused advertising that often perpetuated unrealistic beauty standards. L Brands, VS’ parent company, canceled the fashion show in 2019, citing a move to “evolve the marketing of Victoria’s Secret.”

In 2018, the brand’s then-chief marketing officer Ed Razek faced backlash following comments during a Vogue interview in which he suggested that the fashion show did not cast trans women because “the show is a fantasy.”

In 2022, a three-part Hulu documentary titled Victoria’s Secret: Angels and Demons delved into the company’s rise and fall as well as shed light on ties between former CEO Leslie Wexner and Jeffrey Epstein.

Karol G Dominates Hot Latin Songs Chart With Shakira Collab ‘TQG’

Karol G’s winning streak continues across the Billboard charts. The Colombian star tacks another No. 1 debut to her account, as “TQG” (“Te Quedé Grande”), with Shakira, arrives at No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart (dated March 11). It’s the third pair-up by two female artists in a lead role to debut at No. 1 since the tally launched in 1986 — and they’ve all been Karol G collabs.

As previously reported, Mañana Será Bonito’s large streaming first-week sum spurs 13 debuts on Hot Latin Songs. Those, plus three titles also striding up the list, take over the multimetric ranking. In total, 16 songs of the 17-track set rank on this week’s chart, while “Provenza,” now off the tally, ruled for one week in May 2022 (Karol G’s only No. 1 as a soloist among six champs).

With 16 tracks on the chart concurrently, Karol G makes history as the woman with the most simultaneous songs since the ranking began. Only two other acts have scored more songs: Bad Bunny with between 17 and 24 concurrent songs throughout different periods and Ozuna with 21 titles in September 2018. Plus, with five songs in the top 10, Karol G now holds the record for the most simultaneous top 10s among women.

The No. 1 start for “TQG” is powered by streaming activity. It logged 29 million clicks in the U.S., during the Feb. 24-March 2 tracking week, according to Luminate, becoming the most-streamed Latin song of the week.

Karol G first summoned fans to Times Square for the Shakira collab announcement through social media on Feb. 22, where the song was teased on the big screens. The joint effort by the Colombian stars, plus buzz generated about the narrative of the song (heartbreak and moving on after high-profile breakups), have helped “TQG” bow atop Hot Latin Songs. It becomes just the eighth song by a female act to debut at No. 1 since the chart launched in 1986. Here’s the recap:

Debut Date, Title, Artists
Jan. 14, 2012, “Hotel Nacional,” Gloria Estefan
Feb. 28, 2015, “Mi Verdad,” Mana Featuring Shakira
Nov. 19, 2016, “Chantaje,” Shakira Featuring Maluma
Oct. 13, 2018, “Taki Taki” DJ Snake Featuring Selena Gomez, Ozuna & Cardi B
Nov. 23, 2019, “Tusa,” Karol G & Nicki Minaj
August 8, 2020, “Un Dia (One Day),” J Balvin, Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny & Tainy
Feb. 26, 2022, “MAMIII,” Becky G X Karol G
March 11, 2023, “TQG,” Karol G & Shakira

Further breaking down the big debut, “TQG” earns multiple achievements:

-It’s the sixth title with a female act in a lead role to debut at No. 1 since the chart launched in 1986.

-It’s the fifth title by a Hispanic female act on a lead tole to debut at No. 1 since the chart’s inception. (Hispanic relating to Spanish-speaking countries, especially those in Latin America and/ or artists with Latin ascendancy).

-It’s the third pair-up by two female artists in a lead role to debut at No. 1, all including Karol G.

In addition to “TQG,” other songs from the album make progress or debut in the top 10 on Hot Latin Songs: “X Si Volvemos” with Romeo Santos rallies 12-4 in its fourth chart week, with 9.5 million clicks and takes the Greatest Gainer/Streaming honors of the week. “Mientras Me Curo El Cora,” the album’s opening track, opens at No. 8, with 7.3 million U.S. streams; “Gucci Los Paños” is at No. 9 with 7 million clicks; and “Tus Gafitas” at No. 10 with 6.7 million. The latter track links two of the most successful producers from two different worlds: Karol’s longtime collaborator Ovy on the Drums and Billie Eilish’s brother and collaborator Finneas.

Here’s a look at all the songs from Mañana Será Bonito on the current Hot Latin Songs chart:

Rank, Title, Artist (if other than Karol G)
No. 1, “TQG,” with Shakira (debut)
No. 4, “X Si Volvemos,” with Romeo Santos
No. 8, “Mientras Me Curo El Cora” (debut)
No. 9, “Gucci Los Paños” (debut)
No. 10, “Tus Gafitas” (debut)
No. 11, “Gatúbela,” with Maldy
No. 13, “Cairo,” with Ovy on The Drums
No. 14, “Per Tú,” with Quevedo (debut)
No. 16, “Ojos Ferrari,” with Justin Quiles and Angel Dior (debut)
No, 17, “Besties” (debut)
No. 19, “Mañana Será Bonito,” with Carla Morrison (debut)
No. 24, “Amargura” (debut)
No. 25, “Karmika,” with Bad Gyal and Sean Paul (debut)
No. 26, “Mercurio” (debut)
No. 29, “Dañamos La Amistad,” with Sech (debut)
No. 33, “Carolina (debut)

“TQG” also records activity in the other two metrics that influence the Hot Latin Songs chart: radio airplay and song sales. On Latin Airplay, it debuts at No. 27 with 4.29 million in audience impressions. It also accrues 7,000 downloads for a No. 1 start on Latin Digital Song Sales and No. 4 on the overall Digital Song Sales.

Slightly Stoopid, Sublime With Rome Announce Joint Summer Tour

The “Collie Men” of Slightly Stoopid have linked up Sublime with Rome for the Summertime 2023 tour, produced by Live Nation and slated to kick off in July. Joining the two bands are special guests Atmosphere and The Movement.

For Slightly Stoopid, the pairing with Sublime with Rome represents a return to the band’s early roots, when frontmen Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald were teenagers living in San Diego’s Ocean Beach neighborhood. As the legend goes, Bradley Nowell (Sublime’s original frontman) was staying at Doughty’s house trying to quit drugs when he heard some noise coming from the garage. Nowell stuck his head in, saw Doughty and McDonald rehearsing and famously asked, “You guys got a band?

Nowell signed Slightly Stoopid to his indie label imprint Skunk Records while the band members were still in high school and produced and released their debut studio album Slightly $toopid in 1996. Nowell appeared on the hidden track “Prophet,” now a staple in the Slightly Stoopid live repertoire more than 25 years after it was released.

Nowell passed away later that year from a reported drug overdose, devastating his young protégés and music fans around the world, many of whom would not discover Sublime until after his passing. In 2010, Sublime with Rome was formed by Rome Ramirez and Eric Wilson in an effort to carry on the musical tradition of Nowell.

“We couldn’t be more excited for the Summertime 2023 tour,” said Doughty in a statement. “We haven’t toured with Sublime since the early years of Stoopid and we are really excited to be back with our brothers on what we like to call the ultimate summer band camp. We’re stoked to debut some new songs and play new venues and cities we haven’t hit for a while. And most importantly we can’t wait to be playing music for all of you this summer…between the on-stage collabs and the backstage hangs it’s gonna be insane! The Stoopidheads are what fuels Slightly Stoopid. Should be an epic summer of madness!!!”

Fans can gain first access to the artist presale starting today at SlightlyStoopid.com/tour. Local presales begin Thursday (Mar. 9) at 10 a.m. local time and the general on-sale will take place Friday (Mar. 10) at 10 a.m. local time.

The Summertime 2023 tour kicks off at the White River Amphitheatre in Auburn, Wash. on July 6, followed by stops at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, Calif.; Germania Insurance Amphitheater in Austin; Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island in Chicago; Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek in Raleigh, N.C.; Merriweather Post Pavilion in Colombia, Md.; and iTHINK Financial Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, Fla., where the tour wraps Sept. 3.

Backed by legions of supporters known as Stoopidheads, Slightly Stoopid has built a mini-empire with their Stoopid Records indie label, annual Closer to the Sun destination music festival in Mexico, Stoopid Strains cannabis line and Tangie Summer Haze lager, a new beer collaboration with Buzz Rock Breweries in Southern California.

Gigi Hadid Says She’s ‘The Most Embarrassing Friend’ at a Taylor Swift Concert: ‘I Go Nuts’

Taylor Swift‘s The Eras Tour is kicking off in less than two weeks, and the pop star’s close friend, model Gigi Hadid, is already preparing to have a major lack of composure when Swift performs live and in person.

“I’m a psychopath at a Taylor show,” Hadid said on the Tuesday (March 7) episode of E! News, while promoting the new season of her Next in Fashion reality competition. “I go nuts. I’m not cool at all. I’m like the most embarrassing friend.”

As a close friend of the “Lavender Haze” singer, Hadid was likely not one of the many fans trying to score tickets to the pop star’s The Eras Tour, the demand of which crashed Ticketmaster servers and resulted in an investigation of the ticket company by the United States Senate to see if it has abused its power over the live music industry. But Swift will surely hook Hadid up. “I’ll make it to a few,” the model said of the upcoming concerts. “I try to make it to as many as I can.”

And as for attire, Hadid likes to stay comfy to have room to dance the night away. “I like to boogie, so I’m usually in jeans and T-shirt. I’ll rep some Taylor merch if I get some,” she added.

Swift’s Eras Tour is scheduled to kick off March 18, starting with a pair of dates at Glendale, Ariz.’s State Farm Stadium. HAIM, Paramore, Beabadoobee, GAYLE, Muna, Gracie Abrams, Phoebe Bridgers, Girl in Red and Owenn are among the acts Swift has asked to join her on the trek, which marks the pop star’s biggest tour to date.
