Denny Laine Reflects on the Tumultuous ‘Gamble’ of Paul McCartney & Wings’ ‘Band on the Run’

“Can you see it?”

Those were probably the last words Paul McCartney expected to hear after stepping into the cockpit of a plane carrying him and Wings bandmates Linda McCartney and Denny Laine to Lagos, Nigeria, in August 1973. Hoping to watch the landing from the front of the aircraft, McCartney – one of the most famous and successful musicians in the world — instead found himself helplessly standing by as the pilots went back and forth trying to locate the landing strip under the mist-covered jungle canopy. “Oh my God, are we even going to land?” McCartney later recalled of the panicky incident that marked the start of the sessions for Band on the Run, his 1973 masterpiece that turns 50 this December.

To record his fifth post-Beatles album and third LP with new band Wings, McCartney decided to relocate to Lagos for a change of scenery and musical inspiration. It was exactly the sort of bold gambit that his three former Beatle bandmates, just before the split, probably would have shot down without blinking. So, goodbye London, Beatles litigation and paparazzi; hello Africa, the warm sun, open air and Lagos’ music culture.

In hindsight, perhaps what McCartney really needed was chaos and disorder, ingredients that often inspired his best work. Ready or not, that’s what Lagos and the Band on the Run sessions were about to give him, his wife and Laine — one dramatic complication after another, threatening to undermine an endeavor that was more shambolic and seat-of-the-pants than the average McCartney fan realized back in the ‘70s.

“In order to move forward, you have to try new things,” Laine tells Billboard in a phone interview from his home in Florida while describing how he thinks about the landmark album now. “It’s like being a gambler. You gamble with things because it’s more exciting. It’s more appealing. It’s not the normal, everyday 9-to-5 job, it’s more of a ‘Let’s try something new.’”

Even if Band on the Run was more of a gamble than McCartney anticipated – the plane landed safely, but it was far from his last brush with danger on the trip – he certainly needed a chance of pace. At that point, McCartney himself was very much a man on the run — from the shadow of The Beatles, and from the critics who’d knocked (if not savaged) his previous four efforts: McCartney, Ram, Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway. (Many critics now celebrate Ram as a masterpiece, with Rolling Stone naming it one of the 500 greatest albums of all time in 2020.) Sure, he could move plenty of units in stores, but reviewers circa 1973 had grown accustomed to panning the writer of “Eleanor Rigby” and “Hey Jude” as lightweight and inconsequential.

The new lyrical ideas he’d started sketching spoke of imprisonment and the allure of freedom. “Stuck inside these four walls”; “If I ever get out of here”; “Climb on the back, and we’ll go for a ride in the sky”; and “I’ll come flying to your door.”

While he rhapsodized about freedom, though, life had other ideas. Following two defections from Wings just before they were all due to fly out to Nigeria, shrinking McCartney’s existing quintet down to a trio, Laine was now the only remaining member of the group with a surname other than McCartney. The English rocker remembers the finished album that emerged from the Lagos sessions as largely a grand adventure.

“I know why it was appreciated so much,” Laine says. “Because it had a certain feel. It was basically just me and Paul doing the backing tracks. And it was more of a relaxed approach to doing an album than if you’re going in with a band and there are all these parts. We were thrown into that as a last resort because two of the guys didn’t come to Lagos.”

When asked how he responded to the idea of a remote getaway for the project back in the day, Laine adds: “When (McCartney) said, ‘Let’s do it in Africa,’ I understood completely. We wanted to go somewhere where it was different. We’d be influenced by the music and the atmosphere, and it was far away from anything else we’d ever done. Because it was an EMI studio, I think they just put a pin in the map and said, ‘How about Africa?’ I just went: ‘Great, let’s do it.’”

Laine already knew McCartney prior to getting the call to join his post-Beatles band. “Because of his fame, of course, I was in the shadows more, but I wasn’t bothered by that at the time. I was traveling the world and learning a lot and having a good time in many ways. So from that point of view, it was easy for me. I’m very adaptable. When I’m around people who are not adaptable, I get a little bit nervous.”

He and the rest of the entourage couldn’t have foreseen it at the time, but adaptability was the personality trait above all others that would be required of Band on the Run players — who, in spite of everything, ended up producing an album that topped the Billboard 200, produced three Billboard Hot 100 top 10s (including the chart-topping title track) and attained triple-platinum certification.

McCartney would, in interviews over the years, laugh off the adversity that accompanied these sessions. But Band on the Run might represent the most danger he’s ever put himself in for the sake of his career. During his time in Lagos, for example, he and Linda were mugged at knifepoint while walking the streets, oblivious to the warnings they’d been given about wandering at night. Robbed of their belongings — including studio demo tapes – Wings would have to start all over again, redoing from memory what had already been recorded.

As McCartney engineer Geoff Emerick recounts in his memoir, meanwhile, a visa was required for entry into Nigeria — and a resulting visit to the authorities to obtain one revealed the prerequisite of getting yellow fever, typhoid and cholera shots (and that malaria tablets would need to be taken throughout the stay). The McCartneys and Laine were venturing into an area where maladies like typhoid and cholera were an endemic risk. Furthermore, Nigeria was under the control of a military general at the time, and public executions were not an uncommon occurrence in Lagos.

The EMI studio where McCartney and Laine worked overlooked a lagoon at 7 Wharf Road in the city — and it was here that one of the most frightening episodes of all unfolded. At one point, McCartney began struggling to catch his breath, stepped outside and then upon coming back in from the stifling heat, fainted and collapsed. A stunned and shouting Linda feared he was having a heart attack. (It was, rather, a smoking-related bronchial spasm.)

Once he’d returned home, McCartney deadpanned about it all at London’s Gatwick airport: “It was a great experience, and we had no problems whatsoever.”

From the listener’s point of view, none of that adversity is apparent – the record is peak McCartney songcraft. The Abbey Road-like medley of the title track gives way to the full-throated escapism of the rollicking “Jet,” which in turn prefaces the gently melodic “Bluebird,” with its chorus of tight, soaring harmonies. No fewer than three of the record’s tracks — “Band on the Run,” “Jet” and “Let Me Roll It” — would go on to become decades long staples of McCartney’s setlists.

“Me and Paul, we had the same influences musically and had known each other since the ’60s,” Laine says. “It was just easy. It was easy to get a good groove on each other’s songs, and I think that’s what made the album popular.

“We did it almost as though it was a home recording. A lot of the equipment that was out there really wasn’t workable. It was all hand-me-downs from EMI, and they really didn’t know what they were doing.” Fortunately, McCartney had brought along his own engineer, “And we kept it basic. No frills.”

“Normally,” Laine continues, “me and him would get together somewhere and write together — before we go in the studio. He’d come up with an idea, or I would, and then it would be a co-written thing. Or he would have written the songs and I would have known them before we go into the studio because we’d rehearsed them together. That’s what I really enjoyed about [Band on the Run]: the fact we were thrown in the deep end, and we had to swim, and we came up with that feel that we always had anyway.”

The critical and commercial acclaim that followed Band on the Run (it was nominated for the prestigious album of the year Grammy) prefaced the success of Venus and Mars two years later, which was the Wings album McCartney used to reestablish himself as a major touring artist. And there were still other benefits of his African sojourn, including a bit of unstinting praise from the most improbable voice of all: John Lennon. In 1975, Lennon told Rolling Stone that Band on the Run was “a great album,” adding, “It’s good Paul music.”

Kim Petras & Nicki Minaj Serve All Kinds of ‘Main Character Energy’ in ‘Alone’ Video

Call her Kim Petty! On Tuesday (May 2), Kim Petras unveiled the music video for “Alone,” her new single with Nicki Minaj.

In the clip, the German pop princess steps into a number of provocative roles, from a, err, clarinet enthusiast in a marching-band uniform to a hip-thrusting fitness lover who knows her way around an exercise ball to a full-blown naughty nurse as she sings, “I been tryna give it to you all night/ What’s it gonna take to getcha all alone?/ I just want you here by my side/ I don’t wanna be here, baby, on my own.”

Meanwhile, the queen of the Barbz pops up halfway through the visual to join forces with Petras in matching, all-black latex ensembles as she delivers her signature, swaggering guest verse. “It’s Barbie and it’s Kim Petras/ Main character syndrome, they extras/ We ain’t answerin’ questions/ Click on a bi— ‘fore she finish her sentence,” she raps over the track’s sample of Alice Deejay’s 1999 club classic “Better Off Alone.”

In a recent sit-down on Minaj’s Queen Radio, Petras gushed over collaborating with the Pink Friday star, calling their duet the “biggest thing in the world that could ever happen to anyone.”

“It doesn’t feel real still,” she added in an earlier interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “I love her and I’m so inspired by her always, it’s crazy to me. I don’t know how she does it, but she’s just the greatest ever.”

Debuting at No. 55 on the Billboard Hot 100 dated May 6, “Alone” has already become the trans pioneer’s second career entry on the chart following the success of “Unholy,” her Grammy-winning No. 1 smash with Sam Smith. It’s expected to be included on the tracklist for her upcoming major-label debut album out later this year.

Eslabon Armado’s Pedro Tovar Says He’s ‘Not Receiving Credit’ For Peso Pluma Collab

Pedro Tovar, Eslabón Armado’s leader and vocalist who wrote the band’s hit “Ella Baila Sola,” took to social media on Monday (May 1) to express his disappointment over Peso Pluma’s solo performance of their song on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

According to Tovar, since the song was released on March 16, he has not received support from Peso or his label, Prajin Music, on social media, which has created discomfort among fans of both artists, who claim that one is “taking advantage” of the other’s work.

“How would you feel if there’s someone at a level … higher than you, and you put the effort and feeling into writing a song, a song that is yours, and you decide to bring on someone else whose music you like, and then not get the credit for it? Like what the f –? That’s basically what it is, I didn’t get credit for my song,” Eslabón’s leader said in a live video posted to TikTok on Monday afternoon that has since been deleted. “To begin with, Peso Pluma did not share it at all on his Instagram, or [say] ‘Saludos to my compa Pedro, the song was a success’. Nothing. That’s what disappoints me. But hey… We’re going to keep trying.”

Peso Pluma performed the global hit song on Friday’s (April 28) episode of The Tonight Show, where there was no mention of Eslabón by either the host or the artist. Billboard sent a request for comment to The Tonight Show but did not hear back at press time.

“Ella Baila Sola” is included in Eslabón’s album Desvelado, released on April 27 under Del Records with 16 songs, eight of which are collaborations. In an interview with Billboard Español, Tovar shared how the Peso Pluma collab was born. The regional Mexican song peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 chart (dated April 29). It currently sits at No. 2 on the tally. The song also became the first Mexican music song to enter the top five on the Billboard Hot 100.

“When I wrote it, I gave Peso Pulma a call. He was at an airport; I sang it to him over the phone and he liked it a lot. A month later we recorded it,” Tovar said. who went on to offer a preview to his fans on his Instagram stories and “two days later it went viral on TikTok, and we just had to drop it.”

Tovar, 20, admits that the song —a romantic sierreño tune about two compas (buddies) who see a beautiful girl dancing in a social gathering — is not based on his own experience but on “pure imagination … I just imagined myself at a party, it was like a conversation between friends,“ he said.

After being released on streaming platforms, “Ella Baila Sola” quickly reached No. 1 on Spotify and Apple Music, prompting the filming of the music video released on April 7, which already has 92 million views on Youtube.

Eslabón Armado will perform at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on July 15 with a three-hour show accompanied for the first time by a Sinaloan band. Watch a clip of his livestream below:

Lil Nas X Took Selfies with Basically Every Celeb at the 2023 Met Gala

The rapper cozied up to Bad Bunny, Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, Paris Hilton and more.

So much for that “no phones” rule! Lil Nas X turned the 2023 Met Gala into his own personal photoshoot on Monday (May 1) by snapping selfies with … well, almost every famous face in attendance.

After hitting the carpet in his feline-inspired, barely-there ensemble covered in silver body makeup and a bejeweled face mask, the rapper covered up with a white fur stole and started hitting up pals for selfies. Over the course of the night, he bumped into everyone from Kim Kardashian, Cara Delevingne and Naomi Campbell to Bad Bunny, Billie Eilish and his “Industry Baby” collaborator Jack Harlow, who just dropped his third studio album Jackman.

The “Old Town Road” rapper may not have captioned any of the fourteen photos he posted on Twitter, but his eight million followers on the platform had plenty to say in the replies. “MOM DAD AND SIS I LOVE MY FAMILY,” one fan wrote under the Grammy winner’s ecstatic pic with Maluma and Anitta while another commented, “PARIS HILTONNNNNNN the way he’s eating with LEGENDS tonight omggggeee” on his sweet photo cozied up to the “Stars Are Blind” singer.

Plenty of fans couldn’t get enough of the two cat-on-cat selfies Lil Nas X posted with Doja Cat, who dressed in an homage to Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved cat Choupette with facial prosthetics. “This is the live action CATS cast we needed,” one joked. Another posted a gif of Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games and wrote, “It’s giving Hunger Games the Capitol.”

Cardi B, Doja Cat & More: Which Musician Had Your Favorite 2023 Met Gala Look? Vote!

Another Met Gala has gone down in the history books! Musicians and celebrities alike descended upon New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday (May 1) for the institution’s annual fundraising event, which also doubles as one of fashion’s biggest nights.

As always, the Met Gala follows a different theme each year, with 2023’s being “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” to honor the late designer who passed away in 2019; the theme followed in the footsteps of previous designer tributes, much like 2017’s “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between” and 2011’s “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty.”

With the event honoring Lagerfeld’s legacy in the fashion world, musicians in attendance could pull inspiration or from Lagerfeld’s designs for Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel and his eponymous brand, which resulted in the events attendees either dressing like the icon — see: Cardi B, Pusha T and Conan Gray — or going the more daring route by dressing like Lagerfeld’s famous feline Choupette

Doja Cat was the talk of the town, as she elegantly arrived in a backless hand-beaded white gown by Oscar de la Renta a fitted hood punctuated by glittering cat ears and forehead jewels. In a clear homage to Choupette, Doja accessorized the look with facial prosthetics to make her look even more catlike.

Bad Bunny made a splash in the menswear department by showing up in a fitted, cream colored suits decorated with fabric rosettes. The look was business in the front, and a party in the back, as his suit jacket was backless.

Eslabon Armado & Peso Pluma’s ‘Ella Baila Sola’ Makes Top 10 Debut on Regional Mexican Airplay

Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma continue their Billboard charts takeover as “Ella Baila Sola” debuts at No. 7 on the Regional Mexican Airplay ranking (dated May 6). The new airplay top 10 lands as the song extends its No. 1 domination for a fourth week on Hot Latin Songs.

“Ella Baila Sola,” written by Eslabon Armado’s lead singer Pedro Tovar, was released March 17 via DEL/Prajin Parlay. It’s the first single from the sad sierreño group’s album Desvelado, which dropped April 27.

The viral hit debuts in the top 10 on Regional Mexican Airplay with 4.5 million in audience impressions earned in the U.S. in the week ending April 27, according to Luminate. As “Ella Baila” bows at No. 7, it becomes Eslabon Armado’s highest start on the chart among three total entries, all top 10s. The Mexican American group placed a No. 1 through the Ulices Chaidez’ collab “Te Encontré” in June 2021. Prior, the No. 3-peaking “Con Tus Besos” earned the quartet its first top 10 in Sept. 2020.

As “Ella” arrives in the upper region, Peso Pluma captures his first top 10 on his first chart appearance. He joins six other artists who have earned a first top 10 with their maiden entries in 2023. Here’s a recap:

Artist, Title, Collaborator, Peak Date, Peak Position
Grupo Quintanna, “El Final de Nuestra Historia,” with Raymix, March 4, No. 7
Grupo Marca Registrada, “Di Que Sí,” with Grupo Frontera, April 29, No. 1
Mario Domm, “Un Chingo de Tequila,” with Banda MS, May 6, No. 5
Cazzu, “Tú y Tú,” with Los Ángeles Azules & Santa Fe Klan, May 6, No. 3
Santa Fe Klan, “Tú y Tú,” with Los Ángeles Azules & Cazzu, May 6, No. 3
Kurt, “Prometo,” with Banda Los Sebastianes de Saul Plata, May 6, No. 10

Notably, among the 38 tracks that have ranked in the top 10 on Regional Mexican Airplay so far in 2023, “Ella” becomes the first track to debut in the top 10.

Further, “Ella” also makes its first Latin Airplay appearance, at No. 20, the highest start for both Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma there.

Teyana Taylor Brought Chick-fil-A to the Met Gala

Sure, the Met Gala offers a multi-course meal for its celebrity guests, but Teyana Taylor opted for a different dinner option.

The “Bare Wit Me” singer dined on some Chick-fil-A chicken tenders and waffle fries that she brought to the event on Monday (May 1), and the whole situation was hilariously documented by Pusha T on his Instagram Stories.

“@teyanataylor is embarrassing me. She brought @chicfilausa to the #MetGala. I want her away from me…#HARLEM,” the rapper captioned a photo of Taylor’s full plate, with the official Met Gala menu offering dishes like salmon and pea soup seen underneath.

Pusha followed up with another video, in which the 31-year-old R&B singer is seen enjoying her food, with Usher laughing next to her. “@usher tried to stop her…” the “If You Know You Know” rapper wrote.

“It’s two types of people,” Taylor wrote on her own Instagram Stories, comparing Pusha’s pea soup to her own chicken and fries meal.

Taylor served one of the top looks of the night at this year’s Met Gala, which was themed “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” She rocked a black-and-white Thom Browne tweed backless jacket with cutouts at the hips and built-in gloves. She paired the look with a matching drop-waist skirt, a sleek black tie over a white collared shirt, thin black veil and aviator sunglasses reminiscent of the late German fashion designer’s favorite accessory.

BLACKPINK’s Jennie Shares the Advice Rosé Gave Her for Her First Met Gala

Jennie of BLACKPINK strutted the carpet at the 2023 Met Gala on Monday night (May 1) and dished in an interview all about being there for the first time.

“I am everywhere, this is my first Met,” the K-pop idol told Vogue correspondent Emma Chamberlain upon arrival at the star-studded soiree. “I was really excited until I got off my car, like, two minutes ago.”

To fit with the evening’s theme — Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty — Jennie wore a vintage Chanel minidress from the late Lagerfeld’s fall/winter runway collection for the iconic fashion house in 1990. She accessorized the white number perfectly with black opera gloves and matching tights, and as a longtime Chanel ambassador, the rapper had insider access to the look for her big moment.

“I’m so lucky to have the Chanel team recreate this look from the ’90s — the one that Karl did, so I’m just, like, so happy!” she gushed.

Being her first time at the exclusive event, Jennie admitted she was looking forward to “literally everything” and had no idea what to expect, but also revealed the advice her BLACKPINK bandmate Rosé gave her after attending the gala in 2022 for In America: An Anthology of Fashion. “Rosie, she was here last year. She told me just have fun, so that’s the plan for today,” the “SOLO” rapper said.

Jennie also took to social media in the hours after the Met Gala to show off her dress from every angle, writing, “Merci mon chancel family for this dream look.”

Four Tet Announces Forthcoming Collaborative LP From Fred again.. & Brian Eno: ‘The Most Beautiful Album of 2023’

The Four Tet and Fred again.. collaboration train continues, this time with a new guest: Brian Eno.

Today on social media Four Tet announced that his label, Text Records, will release a collaborative album from Fred again.. and Eno this Friday, May 5. Four Tet called the LP, called Secret Life, “the most beautiful album of 2023.”

The collaboration is one among friends, as Brian Eno is a longtime mentor of Fred again.. the U.K. producer born Fred Gibson.

“I think of Fred as my mentor as well,” Eno told Zane Lowe last fall, “in that I learnt so much about contemporary music from watching him working. When I first worked with Fred I could see he was brilliant. It’s very clear. He’s a very very sensitive and good artist, and I was very impressed by that. But I didn’t really understand a lot of what he was doing. It took me quite awhile to think ‘oh my gosh, this is really a new idea about how you can make music.’ So I learned a lot from him. It’s a two way relationship.”

Four Tet, who’s playing three shows in Los Angeles this week tonight through Thursday (May 2-4), also noted that the album will get physical releases on vinyl and CD. A companion online radio station, secretlife.fm has been broadcasting daily starting at 10 p.m. U.K. time.

Secret Life is the first album from Fred again.. since the November 2022 release of his third studio LP, Actual Life 3 (January 1 – September 22, 2022). Eno’s last studio album, ForeverAndEverNoMore, was released in October of 2022. It was the legend’s 29th solo studio LP.

Meanwhile, Four Tet and Fred again.. are on an epic run, having headlined the second weekend of Coachella with Skrillex. The trio were added to the festival’s Sunday night lineup just the day before the event started, after the weekend one Sunday night headliner Frank Ocean dropped out after a leg injury.

Four Tet also released a new single, the eight-plus minute “Three Drums,” last week on Text Records.

See the cover art for the new collaboration below.
