“I want to have my album be welcomed by the people, I want it to have the same streams as singles do,” the Mexican chart-topping artist — whose previously released albums include Ah Y Qué? and Efectos Secundariostold Billboard. “I’m showing people another part of La Doble P.”

Génesis drops as Peso Pluma continues to make history on the charts. Most recently, the “Por Las Noches” singer became the first act to lead the Billboard Global 200 and the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. simultaneously with different songs: Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma’s “Ella Baila Sola” and “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 55,” his Bizarrap-produced hit song. “Ella Baila Sola” spent five weeks atop the Billboard Global 200, becoming the ranking’s first leader for the regional Mexican genre.

About his rapid seismic rise, Peso (born Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija) has said, “I knew this was gonna happen, but I didn’t know at what level and what speed. I knew I was gonna do good in Mexico and the Spanish-speaking countries, but this went worldwide [so fast]. I’m thankful for that.”

The 24-year-old singer-songwriter is currently on a U.S. tour, produced by Live Nation, that kicked off in April and will make stops in Nashville, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Chicago.

Here’s Why Kelly Clarkson Thinks Taylor Swift Is ‘Brilliant’

Back during the 2019 battle over masters between Taylor Swift and Scooter Braun, Kelly Clarkson took to Twitter to suggest that the pop superstar re-record the albums she doesn’t own.

“@taylorswift13 just a thought, U should go in & re-record all the songs that U don’t own the masters on exactly how U did them but put brand new art & some kind of incentive so fans will no longer buy the old versions,” she wrote at the time, and in a new SiriusXM interview on Thursday (June 23), Clarkson reflected on her four-year-old tweet.

“I think Scooter took offense to it … we ran into each other, and he reached out at the time to my manager,” she told host Andy Cohen. “I was like, ‘It wasn’t anything against him.’ When she came out and said that and I heard about it, I was like, ‘Whatever. Re-record them. Your fans will support you.’ Uh, they did! She has like every top record right now in the charts!”

She added that at the time, she didn’t know much about the situation in which Braun acquired Scott Borchetta’s Big Machine Records Label Group and Swift’s catalog for $300 millionBraun later sold Swift’s masters in 2020, prompting Swift to begin the process of re-recording her first six Big Machine albums. “All I heard was, ‘Man, I really want to own.’ […] She writes everything! It’s so important to her. She’s a businesswoman,” Clarkson said. “It felt wrong that she didn’t have the opportunity, right? That’s the thing. If you have the opportunity and you choose to not pay that much money, that’s one thing, but to not have the opportunity to own something that is really important to you — I’m not that artist. I don’t care like what I own. I’m not a businesswoman at all.”

Clarkson concluded by noting that Swift is a “genius,” not only for re-recording her albums but also for setting out on her massive The Eras tour. When asked if she was “thanked” by Swift for her idea, Clarkson replied, “I think she is brilliant. She would’ve come up with that on her own and she maybe already had before I even tweeted it.”

In a note shared to fans the next day, the “Two of Us” singer shared that he’s working to reschedule the canceled show, and that tickets for the original date will still work for the new one. “Sending all my love out to everyone that was affected by the extreme weather at Red Rocks last night,” he wrote in his message. “I hope everyone has made it home safely and anyone injured is on the mend, it was devastating to see so many of you affected.”

The former One Direction member continued, “I want to thank the speed and care of my touring personnel and first responders who worked tirelessly last night to help care for everyone affected in what was such extreme circumstances.

Seven people were transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries due to the storm, and a total of 80 to 90 people were treated at the venue for injuries including cuts and broken bones, according to the West Metro Fire Rescue in Lakewood, Colorado.

One attendee took to Twitter to share her “view” from the venue’s bathroom where she was taking shelter, in which the massive chunks of hail are seen flowing into the stalls. “We were so fortune to have been able to squeeze into the bathroom before it got too cramped,” the fan named Jess wrote.

YOASOBI Provides a Dreamlike Experience During DENKOSEKKA, Its First Arena Tour: Live Report

On June 4, YOASOBI played the last show of its first arena tour, YOASOBI ARENA TOUR 2023 “DENKOSEKKA,” at Saitama Super Arena, Japan.

With 19,000 fans in attendance, this was YOASOBI’s largest-ever solo show — and it was also being broadcast live around the world. YOASOBI’s newest single, “Idol,” has broken countless records in the charts, and is maintaining tremendous momentum, even taking the number one spot on the Billboard’s Global Excl. U.S. chart. The Saitama Super Arena show was an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience that power first-hand.

Watching the show, the first things that stood out to me were the bold presence of vocalist ikura and composer Ayase, and their solid performance. YOASOBI is a musical unit that produces music inspired by novels. Their big break came with an animated music video. Partly because they debuted during the pandemic, their first stage performance was an online show. They later began performing at shows and festivals with live audiences, but it wasn’t until this tour that they finally began to have normal shows where audiences shouted or sang along. They’re not a unit forged in the fires of frequent live shows. However, the indelible impression the show left me with was of the physical strength of the duo. The passionate vocals and performance, which the two threw themselves into with every fiber of their being, brought the whole arena together as one. Their show packed a tremendous punch.

At curtain time, laser light danced through the air and a four-on-the-floor beat and electro melody began ringing out through the venue. The set, suspended from the ceiling, rose up, and Ayase, ikura, and their band members appeared, dressed in yellow track suit-like costumes. “It’s time for YOASOBI to start things up!” declared ikura, and they launched into the first song of the night, “The Blessing.” The audience began chanting out the rhythm of the exciting electro number. They followed this up with their hit song “Into the Night.” ikura shouted “Get up and jump around!” and the audience’s energy suddenly reached fever pitch. When Ayase yelled “Let’s make this a night to remember!” and the band began performing “RGB,” the audience swung their towels above their heads. From the very start, the air was filled with excitement.

After some call & response between the band and the audience, YOASOBI shifted into the middle of their show, playing the songs “Seventeen,” “Mister,” “Umi No Manimani,” and “Suki Da” from their Hajimete no EP. Each of these songs was based on a story by a leading Japanese novelist, and the colorful visuals on the massive LED screen behind the band wove the aesthetics of each story.

Ayase then introduced the band — guitarist AssH, bassist Hikaru Yamamoto, keyboardist Zakuro Misohagi, and drummer Honogumo. He reflected on the tour, deep emotion in his voice as he recalled, “We’ve had lots of difficulties and struggles, but looking back, it was all fun. This experience has really been a tremendous support, and I’m truly happy that we’ve been able to make each new day a great one.”

ikura gave a moving speech to the crowd, expressing the joy and gratitude she felt as she realized one of her dreams. She recalled the first time she came to Saitama Super Arena, ten years ago, at the age of 13. She watched one of her very favorite musicians, Taylor Swift, from the very last row of the second floor stands. “I remember being amazed by just how moving music could be. I was moved, and at the same time, I thought about how much I wanted to stand on this same stage — how I wanted it to be my own voice that enveloped the crowd. And today, here I am!” She continued, “I want YOASOBI to be the kind of band that you dream about, and for us to keep putting on shows that are dreams come true for all of you, too!”

In the second half of the show, YOASOBI sang wistful ballads, starting with “Comet” and leading into “If I Could Draw Life.” The pop tune groove of “Haven’t” got the audience swaying and vibing. Then, after a quick introduction of the show’s merch and the staff, which provided a glimpse of the duo’s friendly and approachable personalities, Ayase and ikura performed a run of light, cute, popular songs: “Halzion,” “Haruka,” and “The Swallow.”

The show then headed towards its climax. Over the electro sound effects, ikura yelled out “Everyone, raise your voices and shout it out with me!” and launched into “Monster.” The audience’s fists pumped and their shouts filled the air as bright red lasers flittered across the arena. This was followed by “Blue,” and the whole audience lifted their voices together as the chorus rang out, “See what, see what, covered deep inside.” The show ended with a performance of “Adventure,” a rapturous closer that brought the whole audience together as one.

The audience began chanting for an encore, and Ayase, ikura, and the rest of the band took to the stage once again. The last song they played was “Idol.” During the intro, which had extended for the live set, ikura shouted out “Now let’s give it all we’ve got and dance till we drop!” and filled the arena with feverish excitement through the powerful song, switching between rapping and rapid-fire vocals. As silver confetti flittered through the air, ikura, a huge smile on her face, shouted “We are YOASOBI! Thank you!” took a deep bow, and left the stage.

The show was intense — the kind of show that leaves your heart racing with excitement even after it ends. For each and every one of the 19,000 people in the audience, it must have been like a dream coming true.

On August 5 and 6, YOASOBI will be performing at Head In The Clouds festival in Los Angeles. It is certain to show their unparalleled momentum and their tremendous potential as a live act.

YOASOBI Logs 10th Week Atop Billboard Japan Hot 100

YOASOBI‘s “Idol” continues to blaze the trail as it adds another week to its record-breaking run atop the Billboard Japan Hot 100 chart, released June 22.

Scoring its 10th consecutive week at No. 1, the points for “Idol” in streaming, video views, karaoke and radio airplay began increasing again this week after showing a slight downtrend. Dominating those four metrics for the fourth week in a row, total points for the Oshi no Ko opener increased by 1.7 percent to 21,616, which is more than the total from two weeks ago.

The theme of the drama series Daga, Jonetsu wa aru starring member Shintaro Morimoto and King & Prince’s Kaito Takahashi also performed well in video (No. 3) but couldn’t overtake “Idol” as it continues its domination over the Japan song chart.

BTS’s “Take Two,” which debuted at No. 6 on the Japan Hot 100 last week, slips to No. 8 this week. The track performed favorably, coming in at No. 7 for downloads, No. 8 for streaming, No. 4 for video and No. 7 for radio, but saw a significant decrease in downloads from 30,821 to 6,151 units this week.

Rest assured, Rod Stewart does not have any plans to give up rock n’ roll for good. “I’d like to clear up any confusion that I may have caused with my dear fans and the media. I shall never retire! I was put on this Earth to be a singer and will keep doing so for as long as the good Lord lets me,” Stewart explained in an Instagram post. “I’ll be playing the hits as advertised for the U.K., U.S., South America and Vegas and into 2024 but no retirement as such.”

He continued, “During recent interviews, I’ve mentioned my newest passion is big band/swing music and when we wrap this greatest hits tour, its something I’m very eager to share with you. I could never turn my back on the songs that I’ve written and sung over the last six decades. They are like my children. I created them and I love them. I’ll always come back to them, just like I did after The Great American Songbook series, which I shall boastfully add, sold 26 million albums!”

In the BBC interview, Stewart stated that he is working on a “swing album with Jools Holland” that will arrive sometime in 2024. “Everything has to come to an end sooner or later,” the “I Don’t Want to Talk About It” singer told the outlet, likely prompting the retirement rumors.

Stewart concluded the optimistic message with a promise for what lies ahead: “I look forward to seeing you on the road with all the hits and I can’t wait to introduce you to my swing album next year.”

Paul McCartney Clarifies How AI Will Be Used In New Beatles Song: ‘It’s All Real and We All Play on It’

As the music industry continues to grapple with the popularity and advancement of AI, some find themselves trying to figure out how to ethically incorporate artificial intelligence into their work. Earlier this month, when music titan Paul McCartney shared that he would be implementing AI in this process of finishing a new as-yet-untitled Beatles song, the news drew strong reactions from both sides of the AI debate.

In a Thursday (June 22) tweet, McCartney clarified his previous comments about AI. “Can’t say too much at this stage but to be clear, nothing has been artificially or synthetically created,” the 18-time Grammy-winner wrote. “It’s all real and we all play on it. We cleaned up some existing recordings – a process which has gone on for years.”

“No one is more excited than us to be sharing something with you later in the year,” McCartney continued in his tweet. “We hope you love it as much as we do.”

As he explained in an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today that aired June 13, AI would be used to separate vocal tracks from background noise and instruments, not to create new material. McCartney said during the chat that he had been using AI to “extricate” late bandmate John Lennon‘s vocals from an old recording for use on the untitled track.

Deemed the “final Beatles record” by Sir Paul, the BBC speculated that the project could be a recording of “Now and Then,” a somber love song written by Lennon in 1978.

Sam Smith & Madonna Vault Onto Hot Dance/Electronic Songs Chart With ‘Vulgar’

Sam Smith and Madonna soar onto Billboard’s multi-metric Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart (dated June 24) with “Vulgar,” at No. 11. The track earned 1.8 million official streams and sold 3,000 downloads in the U.S. in the week ending June 15, according to Luminate.

“Vulgar,” released near the beginning of Pride month on June 9, is Smith’s fifth chart showing. They have four top 10s, including one that reached the summit, Disclosure’s “Latch,” on which they’re featured (four weeks at No. 1, 2014). Smith’s other top 10s are “Omen” (Disclosure featuring Smith; No. 5, 2015), “Promises” (with Calvin Harris; No. 4, 2018) and “I Feel Love” (No. 8; 2019).

“Vulgar” is Madonna’s seventh entry on the chart, which began in January 2013. Among those, she has three top 10s: “Living for Love” (No. 9, 2015), “B**** I’m Madonna” (featuring Nicki Minaj; No. 5, 2015) and “Frozen” (Madonna vs. Sickick; No. 10, 2022).

Concurrently, “Vulgar” bows at No. 1 on the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart (which premiered in 2010), giving Smith their third leader and Madonna her first. Smith previously headed up the list with “Latch” (2014) and “I Feel Love” (2019).

Meanwhile, “Vulgar” starts on the all-genre Digital Song Sales chart (No. 16).

Additionally on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, Kylie Minogue climbs to a new career high with “Padam Padam” (11-7). Her first top 10, as it reached No. 10 two weeks earlier, among 15 charted titles, picked up 2.1 million streams (up 25%) and sold 3,000 downloads (up 104%, good for the chart’s top Sales Gainer honor). The increases follow the June 9 release of the song’s extended mix and June 11 surprise performance at Summertime Ball at Wembley Stadium in the UK.

The song by Minogue, who also headlined iHeartMedia’s KTUphoria at New York’s Jones Beach Theater June 17, performing “Padam,” as well as fan favorites, additionally pushes 3-2 on Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales and enters Dance/Electronic Streaming Songs (No. 21).

Further on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, DJ/producer Fisher earns his eighth chart hit, while singer/DJ Aatig collects her second, with “Take It Off” (No. 17). It’s the top rank yet for both acts. “Take” took in 1.4 million streams and sold 1,000 downloads, the latter figure also allowing for a No. 5 start on Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales.

Shifting to the Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart, Rita Ora adds her second No. 1 and featured act Fatboy Slim scores his first with “Praising You” (4-1). The track, a reimagination of the latter’s 1999 classic “Praise You,” drew core-dance airplay on Music Choice’s Dance/EDM channel, KMVQ-HD2 San Francisco and KNHC (C89.5) Seattle, among other stations. (The Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart measures radio airplay on a select group of full-time dance stations, along with plays during mix shows on around 60 top 40-formatted reporters.)

Gunna for the Top: Will ‘A Gift and a Curse’ Beat Morgan Wallen?

The Contenders is a midweek column that looks at artists aiming for the top of the Billboard charts, and the strategies behind their efforts. This week (for the upcoming charts dated July 1), a star rapper looks to continue his hot streak, while hard rock veterans and K-poppers also put the top spot in their sights.

Gunna, A Gift and a Curse (YSL/300): Though Gunna has been under attack on social media since last December for his supposed “snitching” in accepting an Alford plea — a formal admission of guilt while also maintaining innocence — for his part in the YSL RICO trial, it appears that he remains a prolific performer on streaming. (He denied any cooperation with the prosecution.) His new album A Gift and a Curse has littered the Spotify and Apple Music real-time charts since its release last Friday (June 16), with the shout-along “fukumean” already seeming like a breakout hit from the set.

The rapper born Sergio Giavanni Kitchens has been a regular visitor to the top spot of the Billboard 200 since his late-’10s rise to stardom. And he’s already been there three times this decade – with his own Wunna (2020) and DS4Ever (2022) albums, and as a co-lead on the YSL showcase compilation Slime Language 2 (2021). DS4Ever, Gunna’s most recent set, was also his most popular, moving 150,000 first-week units and topping even The Weeknd’s new Dawn FM to claim the top spot.

To unseat Morgan Wallen – who returns to No. 1 for a 13th frame with his One Thing at a Time blockbuster this chart week – he’ll need to do it almost entirely with streaming (with help from digital sales), as the album is not yet for sale in any physical format. Wallen posted 115,000 units in its most recent week, so if Gunna can approach his DS4ever debut performance with his new set, he should have a pretty good shot of becoming the latest act to interrupt the country star’s months-long reign.

Ateez, The World Ep.2: Outlaw (KQ/RCA/Legacy): It’s going to be a classic case of sales vs. streams in next week’s competition for top debut on the Billboard 200. Eight-piece Korean boy band Ateez has yet to establish a big stateside presence on streaming services, but like many popular K-pop acts, the act sells physical copies by the truckload – which has already helped their Spin Off: From the Witness set hit No. 7 earlier this year, and their The World Ep.1: Movement EP get all the way to No. 3 on the Billboard 200 last August.

The sequel to that latter EP, The World Ep. 2: Outlaw is also expected to make a pretty big chart splash next week, again thanks to robust physical sales. To maximize that opportunity, the octet has released 21 different collectible CD editions of Outlaw, including some signed variants, all containing branded merchandise and randomized items (action cards, partner cards, photo cards) — as well as a Target-exclusive edition.

Queens of the Stone Age, In Times New Roman… (Matador): Queens of the Stone Age albums are becoming increasingly infrequent – it’s been six years since the band’s Villains – but the veteran hard rock band has historically been a strong performer on the Billboard 200, and it even topped the chart two albums ago with 2013’s …Like Clockwork. This month’s In Times New Roman… will be helped by a series of different-colored vinyl variants, though thus far the album lacks a hit single to match Villains’ top 10-charting Rock Airplay hit “The Way You Used to Do.”

In the Mix

J. Cole, Born Sinner (ByStorm/Columbia/Dreamville/Roc Nation): As fans eagerly await a new album from Cole — and as he sticks around the top five on the BillboardHot 100 with his appearance on Lil Durk’s smash “All My Life” — fans also have new goodies to tide them over with the vinyl reissue of his 2013 chart-topper Born Sinner. The LP is available in a trio of color variants, including a translucent red exclusive to Target.

Asake, Work of Art (YNBL/Empire): Asake’s debut album Mr. Money With the Vibe was one of the most-acclaimed and best-received Afrobeats albums of 2022, reaching the top half of the Billboard 200. The Nigerian singer/songwriter looks to do even better than that set’s No. 66 bow with this month’s Work of Art, which has already scored a pair of top 10 hits on the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart with advance tracks “Amapiano” (with Olamide) and “2:30.”
