Kylie Minogue, Peggy Gou & More Bring Dance Music to Billboard Global Charts

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts have been home to wide a variety of international hits, across many genres, cultures and languages. Dance music has been able to seamlessly float across cultural and geographic lines, including on the latest, July 1-dated rankings, as three artists, each from a different continent, debut with their own high-energy boosts.

Kylie Minogue, one of Australia’s most enduring stars, debuts on the Global 200 with “Padam Padam” at No. 190 while climbing to No. 169 on the Global Excl. U.S. list. Since its May 18 release, the thumping track has increased its weekly streams each week, culminating in a 17% bump to 9.6 million worldwide in the frame ending June 22, according to Luminate.

The song is Minogue’s first non-holiday entry on either global chart and continues to build months before the expected September release of parent album Tension; no tracks from her 2020 set Disco appeared on the surveys.

Elsewhere, South Korea-born, Germany-based singer, DJ and producer Peggy Gou makes her global chart debut, at No. 137 on Global Excl. U.S. with “(It Goes Like) Nanana.” The house single drew 9.6 million streams worldwide June 16-22, its first full week of release.

Plus, Germany’s Purple Disco Machine teamed with France’s Kungs on “Substitution,” new on Global Excl. U.S. at No. 199, up by 3% to 7.9 million streams around the world. Neither act has made the Global 200, but “Substitution” is the second entry for both on Global Excl. U.S., following the former’s “Hypnotized,” which hit No. 121 over a 23-week stay in 2020-21, and the latter’s “Never Going Home,” which reached No. 107 amid a 15-week run in 2021.

The burst of dance music on this week’s global charts is diverse, both geographically and stylistically. These tracks join others by chart mainstays including David Guetta and Calvin Harris, as well as such pop artists drawing from the dance world as Dua Lipa, whose “Dance the Night” holds in the Global 200’s top 40, and Jain, who jumps from 68-41 with 2016’s resurgent “Makeba” (which is now being promoted to pop radio).

Olivia Rodrigo Unveils Alternate ‘GUTS’ Album Cover As a Target Exclusive

Olivia Rodrigo sure loves her purple album covers. Just three days after announcing her sophomore album Guts and giving fans a peek at its plum cover art, the 20-year-old pop star has now unveiled an alternative vinyl available only through Target — and yes, the secondary cover also features quite a bit of Rodrigo’s signature color.

The star shared the news with a simple Instagram Story post, sharing an album preorder link to Target’s website. The store’s special vinyl features Rodrigo — wearing a fuzzy black sweater and Converse sneakers — lying on a lilac floor with her feet kicked up against matching lilac walls. The vinyl disc also bears a purple shade, though it’s more of a neon magenta.

The photo pairs nicely with Guts‘ primary album cover, which shows Rodrigo in a lacy black dress and red lipstick lying on a purple backdrop, wearing four rings on her fingers that spell out the project’s title. “I made the bulk of this album during my 19th year on this earth,” the former Disney actress said in a Monday (June 26) statement at the time of the album announcement.

“A year that, for me, was filled with lots of confusion, mistakes, awkwardness & good old fashioned teen angst.”

As fans already know, though, the “Drivers License” singer’s love affair with purple goes much farther back than Guts. Beyond the fact that a quick scroll through her Instagram profile immediately proves that the hue is her go-to, the cover of her chart-topping debut record Sour also featured Rodrigo posing against a purple background, a collection of cheerful stickers covering her face and tongue.

Whether it’s the original or Target edition, fans have to wait until Sept. 8 for Guts to arrive. But new music from the Grammy winner is just around the corner, with Rodrigo planning to release the album’s lead single “Vampire” at midnight Friday (June 30). Plus, as announced Wednesday (June 28), she’ll also release a corresponding music video for the Dan Nigro-produced track on Friday, having teased the visual a couple times on social media.

Gunna’s ‘A Gift & a Curse’ Grabs No. 1 Spot on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart

Gunna bursts in at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart with fourth studio album A Gift & a Curse on the list dated July 1. The set, released June 16 on Gunna/Young Stoner Life/300/3EE, enters with 85,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending June 22, according to Luminate.

Of A Gift & a Curse’s first-week sum, just under 84,000 units derive from streaming, equaling 112.6 million official on-demand streams of the album’s songs. Album sales contribute 1,000 units, while the remaining balance is a negligible sum from track-equivalent album units. (One unit equals the following levels of consumption: one album sale, 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams for a song on the album.)

Gunna grabs his fourth Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums No. 1 with his latest champ. His previous three efforts – Drip or Drown 2 (2019), Wunna (2020) and DS4Ever (2022) – all debuted at No. 1; the foremost pair led for one week, while the lattermost title ruled for five frames.

Elsewhere, A Gift & a Curse likewise becomes Gunna’s fourth leader on the Top Rap Albums chart and starts at No. 3 on the all-genre Billboard 200.

Gunna’s Gift keeps giving, as it sparks 13 debuts on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. “Fukumean” leads the new arrivals at No. 8, while “Back to the Moon” follows at No. 10. With the two tracks, Gunna picks up his 14th and 15th top 10s. In addition to the new songs, previous release “Bread and Butter” recovers 27-18 thanks to the album’s strong streaming performance.

Here’s a recap of all 14 of Gunna’s songs on this week’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart:

  • No. 8, “Fukumean”
  • No. 10, “Back to the Moon”
  • No. 15, “Rodeo Dr”
  • No. 17, “Back at It”
  • No. 18, “Bread & Butter”
  • No. 23, “Ca$h It”
  • No. 25, “Bottom”
  • No. 29, “IDK NoMore”
  • No. 30, “P Angels”
  • No. 34, “Paybach”
  • No. 37, “Go Crazy”
  • No. 44, “Born Rich”
  • No. 46, “Turned Your Back”
  • No. 49, “I Was Just Thinking”

Jaden Smith Says Mom Jada Pinkett Smith Introduced Psychedelic Drugs to Their Family

It’s safe to say that the Smiths have a groovy time together. While speaking last week at the Psychedelic Science conference in Denver, Jaden Smith revealed that he and his family use psychedelic drugs, an activity that he says his mom, actress Jada Pinkett Smith, was the first to introduce to her household.

“I think it was my mom, actually, that was really the first one to make that step for the family,” Jaden said at the conference, according to USA Today. “It was just her for a really, really long time and then eventually it just trickled and evolved and everybody found it in their own ways.”

The 24-year-old actor also noted the positive effects the drugs have had on their family dynamic. “Siblings can argue so much and fight so much, and lord knows me and my siblings have done so much of that in the past,” he explained, referencing his 22-year-old sister Willow and his 30-year-old half brother Trey. “But the level of love and empathy that I can feel for them inside of the [psychedelic] experiences and outside of the experiences has been something that’s profound and beautiful.”

“It will actually help us to open up our minds to get out of the old ways of thinking that got us into lots of these arguments, and open it up so that it just releases and makes room for you to work it out and massage it out until it’s completely gone,” Jaden added.

The Smith unit is headed by Jada and Will Smith, who married in 1997. They welcomed Jaden the following year, then Willow in 2000.

In other Smith family news, Jada and Willow’s Facebook Watch show Red Table Talk with Jada’s mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris recently ended after Facebook axed all of its original programming. The show had a number of memorable moments throughout its five-year run, from Jada and Will breaking down a rough patch in their marriage during which the actress had a romantic “entanglement” with musician August Alsina, to Jada speaking out following Will’s infamous Chris Rock Oscar’s slap.

“We are so grateful to have had such a beautiful partnership with Facebook Watch and we are sorry to see the entire team disband,” Jada said following the show’s cancelation. “We wish everyone well in their new journeys to come. We at Red Table are in talks of finding a new home and we’ll see you soon.”

Beyoncé Tops May Boxscore Report, First Woman to Do So In Almost Four Years

Well that was quick. Just two weeks ago, Billboard was lamenting the lack of women at the top of the midyear Boxscore report but looking forward to the slew of female acts slated to storm the rankings throughout the rest of the year. And now, Beyoncé becomes the first woman at No. 1 on Top Tours in almost four years.

According to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore, the first nine shows of the Renaissance World Tour — between May 10-30 — earned $67.5 million and sold 461,000 tickets. That makes Beyoncé the highest grossing act of the month.

The last time a woman-identifying act crowned the list, P!nk ever so narrowly edged out The Rolling Stones in July 2019 with a similar run of European stadiums. P!nk had previously topped the list in March of that year, with the Spice Girls sneaking in between in June. The four-year break between them includes the blackout period of COVID-19, but still marks a breathless stretch of 28 monthly reports dominated by male acts.

Further, Beyoncé is the first Black artist, regardless of gender, to hit the monthly summit since the charts launched in February 2019. Extending beyond the launch of these rankings, the last to do so was Queen Bey herself, co-headlining with Jay-Z on 2018’s On the Run II Tour. They earned $53.1 million and sold 404,000 tickets in September of that year.

The Renaissance World Tour’s $60 million-plus haul makes it the 10th tour to break that barrier. It’s the sixth biggest monthly gross since the charts premiered, only behind Bad Bunny (twice), The Rolling Stones, Def Leppard and Motley Crue, and The Weeknd.

Beyoncé’s nine shows in May were spread across seven markets in Europe. All seven reports appear on Top Boxscores, led by two dates at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Those shows earned $16.9 million and sold 96,000 tickets, enough to rank No. 3.

But the engagement’s bronze medal is more a quirk of timing than a failure to lead the list. She played five shows there, but three of them fell in June, and those will qualify for next month’s recap. In total, the quintet of concerts earned $42.2 million and sold 240,000 tickets. That makes it the seventh highest grossing reported Boxscore of all time, and the highest among women artists, passing the Spice Girls’ 17-show haul at London’s own O2 Arena ($33.8 million; 257,000 tickets) in 2007-08.

Elsewhere, Beyoncé posted eight-digit earnings in Solna, Sweden, grossing $10.7 million on the tour’s first two shows (May 10-11) and at Paris’ Stade de France with $10.1 million. Those follow at Nos. 11-12 on Top Boxscores, ahead of one-night-only concerts in Edinburgh, Scotland (No. 14); Cardiff, Wales (No. 21); Brussels, Belgium (No. 22); and Sunderland, England (No. 24).

Beyoncé’s omnipresence on the May report extends to Top Promoters, pushing Live Nation above $400 million and four million tickets. And three venues from her routing appear on the 10-position Top Stadiums chart, including Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at No. 7, powered solely by its two Renaissance shows.

Only halfway through her voyage through Europe, Renaissance’s $67.5 million from May fast approaches the continental totals from On the Run II and Beyoncé’s solo The Formation World Tour, each of which grossed $87 million across the pond. With more figures reported for June, she’s already blown past both of those tours with more than $150 million in the bank.

Coldplay follows at No. 2 on Top Tours, earning $54.8 million. That gross features its own monthly split, with one show at Manchester’s Etihad Stadium on May 31, leaving three others to chart on next month’s recap. Elsewhere, the band played four-show runs at Barcelona’s Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys and in Coimbra, Portugal, at Estadio Cidade de Coimbra. Those line up at Nos. 1-2 on Top Boxscores, with Barcelona topping out at $27.3 million.

Coldplay edged out Beyoncé in terms of monthly attendance, but just barely. Chris Martin & Co. sold 482,000 tickets, 4% ahead of Bey’s 461,000.

Harry Styles and Elton John mix in the top five, at Nos. 3 and 5, respectively. Both Brits are scheduled to wrap their respective yearslong tours in July, clearing space for some of the summer’s biggest acts. Some of those make their Top Tours debuts, including Blink-182 at No. 4. The first batch of the pop-punk’s reunion tour grossed $37.1 million in North American arenas.

After popping in at No. 25 in December 2019, Shania Twain makes her post-pandemic return at No. 6, barely under $30 million with $29.7 million and 249,000 tickets. The Queen of Me Tour continues in North America through the end of July before shipping off to Europe in September.

Also hitting the top 10 for the first time are SUGA at No. 7 (previously listed as Agust D on the April report) and Janet Jackson at No. 10. Both acts blow past the $20 million mark with shows in arenas and amphitheaters.

Deeper on Top Tours, 24 acts grossed $10 million or more, eclipsing the 23 of last September. At the onset of the summer season, with stadiums and amphitheaters opening, expect grosses to continue to surge.

Jung Kook Announces New Solo Single ‘Seven’: Here’s When It Arrives

BTSJung Kook is about to light the summer up light dynamite! BIGHIT Music announced on Thursday (June 29) via Weverse that a new solo single is coming from the singer-songwriter — and soon.

The track, titled “Seven,” is slated to arrive on July 14. The release describes the tune as “an invigorating summer song” that will have ARMY feeling “the full breadth of Jung Kook’s charm.” The announcement also teased “many other activities to come.”

Jung Kook previously released his solo track “Dreamers” — which features Qatari artist Fahad Al-Kubaisi — for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar in November. Its music video features the K-pop star walking through the city and singing from the top of a skyscraper. The artist premiered and performed the song during the international soccer tournament’s opening ceremonies.

“Dreamers” debuted at No. 1 the Hot Trending Songs chart, powered by Twitter, on the Dec. 3-dated tally. It was his first solo track on the chart; he previously peaked at No. 2 with “Stay Alive” in February 2022. “Dreamers” launched at No. 4 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart and No. 9 at Billboard Global 200, while topping the U.S.-based Digital Song Sales tally.

Though several members of BTS have begun serving their mandatory military service, the group has remained active both with solo projects and group activities. BTS celebrated its 10th anniversary this month, and to mark the milestone, released new single “Take Two” on June 9. A statement from HYBE said that the track was a nod to the group’s “second chapter” as well as “an ode to their fans.”

Just like Jung Kook’s “Dreamers,” “Take Two” debuted atop the Hot Trending Songs chart, but managed the feat on the June 10-dated list — before the song even arrived. The song went on to top the June 24-dated Global charts. The track also reached No. 48 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.

Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour Earns $154 Million on European Leg

She make it look easy, ‘cause she got it. Earlier on Thursday (June 29), Billboard reported that the first nine shows of Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour made her the top-grossing touring act of May. But there’s more! She wrapped the European leg of the tour Wednesday night in Warsaw, posting career-high blockbuster numbers. According to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore, Beyoncé grossed $154.4 million and sold 1 million tickets across 21 shows.

Not only is that a huge number that resists qualification, it’s the biggest gross and attendance of any of Beyoncé’s previous European legs. On 2016’s The Formation World Tour and 2018’s On the Run II Tour (co-headlined with Jay-Z), she earned $87 million, marking a 77% bump on her recent stint.

The so-far $154 million-plus total from 21 shows over two months is more than any artist made in the six-month window that defined Billboard’s midyear report. Of course, Harry Styles, Elton John and other acts atop those charts continue to add to their hauls, but it bodes well that the Renaissance World Tour isn’t even half done, putting it in immediate contention for year-end honors.

The tour’s attendance of 1.05 million improves upon 871,000 in 2018 and 867,000 in 2016. It’s the first time that any leg of any solo Beyoncé tour broke the seven-digit milestone.

Of the 14 markets Beyoncé hit, 12 of them yielded local records. That includes the biggest gross in the history of London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Warsaw’s PGE Narodowy, plus the attendance record at Tottenham. Elsewhere, she set highs for single-night engagements and broke ground among women and Black artists throughout Europe.

The obvious standout of the European shows was a five-night run in London, earning $42.2 million from 240,000 tickets. It instantly blasts in to the all-time top 10 Boxscores, ranked seventh behind two engagements apiece from Harry Styles, Take That and Coldplay. That makes it the single biggest report by a woman, a Black artist, or by any act from the United States.

Further, Beyoncé broke the $10 million barrier with double-headers in Solna, Sweden; Amsterdam; and Warsaw. She scored one more eight-figure show with one night at Paris’ Stade de France. The $10.1 million is slightly off from the $10.9 million from On the Run II, but consider that the 2018 gross came from two shows, matching 92% of that gross with just one show in 2023.

These 21 shows push Beyoncé’s reported career gross to $921.7 million and attendance to 9.9 million. But she’s not done for the near future.

The Renaissance World Tour continues with 36 shows in the U.S. and Canada, kicking off on July 8-9 in Toronto. If Beyoncé continues at this pace, the North American leg would gross $264 million and sell 1.8 million tickets. That leg alone would pass the global total of The Formation World Tour to become the biggest of Beyoncé’s career, though it’d make for a worldwide total of about $415 million and 2.8 million tickets.

On that 2016 run, Beyoncé paced $5.3 million in North America, compared to $5.1 million in Europe, indicating that those estimates could be slightly low. Her Renaissance grosses leapt by 44% in Europe from her previous solo tour, but post-pandemic results across the industry have exacerbated an existing ticket-price gap between the continents. Despite typically smaller capacities, North American stadium grosses have ballooned in a more extreme way than in Europe, which could push Beyoncé’s totals even higher.

Final results will depend on final pricing via the dynamics of a post-pandemic ticketing ecosystem. But it is more than safe to say that Beyoncé will soar beyond $1 billion and 10 million tickets in career figures due to her biggest tour ever.

Afrobeats Fresh Picks of the Month: Asake, Bloody Civilian, Amaarae, Ckay, Zinoleesky & More

As the sun’s long-awaited arrival signals the beginning of summer, we’ve been turning the volume up on the latest releases from African artists worldwide for this season’s new soundtrack. Ghanaian-American Afropop star Amaarae and Nigerian Afrobeats powerhouse Asake dropped flashy, boundary-pushing albums with Fountain Baby and Work of Art, respectively. But they’re not alone — both Omah Lay and Ckay dropped off deluxe editions of their recent albums with additional tracks, while Zinoleesky and Fireboy DML released eye-catching singles to herald future releases.

We’ve highlighted 10 of our favorite new Afrobeats (and related) songs that have come out roughly within the last month. Check out our latest Fresh Picks, and find your new summer soundtrack with our Spotify playlist below.

Reekado Banks, Adekunle Gold & Maleek Berry, “Feel Different”

Nigerian singer Reekado Banks recruits Adekunle Gold and Maleek Berry for the feel-good single about a girl whose love makes them “Feel Different.” All three men try to convince themselves they’re better off alone – with Banks singing “If I fall again, I go look so dumb/ I no wan look so dumb/ So I will never never fall again” and Gold singing “Run, run, run, run/ I be running all alone” with a rock guitar hit underlining his point – but ultimately realize they’d go to great lengths just to be with her.

Bloody Civilian, “Escapism”

Nigerian singer-songwriter and producer Bloody Civilian blends amapiano’s log drums with pitched-up EDM vocal chops on “Escapism,” the first track off her experimental debut EP Anger Management. The repetition of her airy “Shoulda smoked that s–t since morning” line creates a carefree mantra she uses to distract herself from the disorderly world around her. But it’s her lithe, pacifying voice that assures listeners they don’t need to turn to vices to find hope.

Amaarae, “Princess Going Digital”

Amaarae’s plea in “Princess Going Digital,” from her critically acclaimed sophomore album Fountain Baby, is crystal clear: “Take me out the streets.” The synth-heavy, crystalline pop track follows the singer as she finds a potential partner that could put an end to her BS-riddled search for love. Vocalist/producer Maesu – who was previously featured on Amaarae’s “Fantasy,” alongside CKay – echoes her sentiments (literally) while promising the princess whatever she wants – just as long as it’s not commitment. “You know it’s just game, girl, you know how it goes,” he sings.

Tay Iwar & Juls, “Summer Breeze”

Tay Iwar teams up with frequent collaborator Juls for the breezy ode to summer off his aptly titled EP Summer Breeze. On its title track, Iwar’s featherweight melodies float over Juls’ dizzying jazz saxophone riffs and scintillating percussion that’s reminiscent of palmwine music. Lyrics like “Tease me baby and turn me on” and “What a sweet release I need” suggest a “Summer Breeze” isn’t the only thing that gets Iwar going, but it’s certainly one of the most divine highlights of this time of year.

Asake, “Lonely at the Top”

Asake offers a bittersweet reflection on “Lonely at the Top,” from his highly anticipated sophomore album Work Of Art. With a backing choir and introspective instrumentation (courtesy of producer Blaisebeatz), the fast-rising star sings about his chasing his lofty dreams of superstardom, while putting on his blinders to avoid the naysayers — and understanding the isolation that comes with it. But Asake remains unfazed while pursuing success, because there can only be one Mr. Money Ginger.

Omah Lay, “reason”

Executing the tried-and-true strategy of capitalizing off a popular release with a deluxe edition, Omah Lay reissued last year’s Boy Alone with five new tracks, including the powerful, insistent “reason.” Kicking off with a palm-muted guitar riff, Omah Lay layers vocals to hypnotic effect, questioning existence and purpose on a track that is at once consistent with and a departure from what we’ve come to expect from him.

Fireboy DML, “YAWA”

Fusing some of his R&B grooves with amapiano drums and a layered, triumphant hook, Fireboy delivers one of his best singles of the year — which is saying something, considering his output so far. He kicks the track off with a few lines in English before slipping into Yoruba, where he flows more comfortably, and puts a ton of energy and passion into it, which comes out clearly on the track.

Asake, “Sunshine”

Asake’s Work of Art album speaks for itself, and is so cohesive that it’s difficult to single out individual tracks to shine a light on. Luckily, there’s plenty to choose from — and “Sunshine” has one of the more memorable hooks on the album, a song brimming with positivity and Asake’s trademark angelic choral flourishes. It’s sometimes remarkable how agile he is with his flows given the sheer weight of musicality that each of his tracks brings to bear, but he is a rare artist for whom seemingly everything works. Check out the full album if you don’t believe us.

Ckay, “nwayi”

Ckay has carved a lane, both melodically and with his subject matter, as the poster child for “emo Afrobeats” (hence the name of his album, Sad Romance) — and this track is right in the sweet spot, paved by his first two major hits, “Love Nwantiti” and “Emiliana.” He’s become truly adept at these breezy earworms laced with sweet nothings, and this is directly in that lineage.

Zinoleesky, “A1 (Feeling Disorder)”

Brisk to the point of breathless is the Zinoleesky flow, and “A1” is the latest entry in his ever-growing canon. Built around a conflicted story of sex and love — or one instead of the other — the song hurtles into a bridge with brief introspection (“I’m emotionally downcast…”) before picking the pace up right where it left off, with a beat that propels him further every second. There’s a self-assurance to his flow that comes across on every track of his — “A1” is up there among his best.
