Holly Humberstone Embraces Uncertainty On Her Surefire Debut

Holly Humberstone has a confession. Despite the title of her forthcoming debut album, Paint My Bedroom Black, she has never actually doused her surroundings in darkness. In reality, her bedroom in the London flat she shares with her sister is what she describes as “so girly.”

But when thinking of what she wanted her first album to signify, Humberstone kept considering the memorable debuts that preceded her own. “I feel like so many artists build such a strong world around them and such an identity, and I feel like I’m changing all the time,” the alternative pop artist says. “I’m 23. I probably should sort of know who I am at this point. I just really don’t.”

That familiar uncertainty is not only visualized by the title of the album (out Oct. 13 on Darkroom/Geffen/Polydor Records) but also felt across its 13 songs, which embrace the duality of feeling apprehensive and alive all at once.

“I didn’t do it on purpose, but to me, the album sounds like it’s got two sides to it, like there’s two sides of me that I didn’t realize were coexisting,” Humberstone says. She thinks the consistency comes through in her vulnerability. “There’s something really empowering about being able to share so much of myself with people I don’t know.”

For much of Humberstone’s career, this has been all she knows. She released her debut single, the poignant “Deep End,” in January 2020, just before the world shut down from the pandemic, but worked tirelessly to emerge a household name. She released her first EP, Falling Asleep at the Wheel, in August 2020 on Platoon; after scoring a major-label deal the following year, she released her second EP that fall. By the end of 2021, she had won the BRIT Award for rising star, and by the end of 2022, she had opened on tour for Olivia Rodrigo and Girl in Red.

For a self-described homebody who grew up in rural Grantham, England — where “there’s nothing f–king going on” — the transition was a bit overwhelming. “You just have to adapt, and writing really helped me,” says Humberstone, who wrote and recorded much of Paint My Bedroom Black in between gigs. She describes songs like lead single “Antichrist” and the dancefloor-ready “Flatlining” as more “extroverted,” while the title track and songs such as “Elvis Impersonators” “feel like wanting to shut things out and be on my own.”

That honesty has bolstered some of Humberstone’s most affecting songs and helped establish her voice — from “Deep End,” about supporting her sister’s mental health, to the more uptempo 2022 single “Scarlett,” which mined her best friend’s one-sided relationship and ultimate breakup. On Paint My Bedroom Black, Humberstone looks inward, writing about her own attempts at relationships and the guilt that accompanies being gone so often.

On “Superbloodmoon,” which features Darkroom labelmate d4vd (marking the first time Humberstone has welcomed a collaborator on one of her own tracks), the pair sing of being far from home. “It’s a cold kind of love, from a distance … It’s a desperate kind of love that I’m missing,” they sing in longing harmony. And on “Kissing in Swimming Pools,” she sings of “wanting to hold down some form of relationship with somebody that I really liked” only to realize (and ultimately admit) how her career challenges that.

No matter the production style or vocal delivery of each song, though, Humberstone’s brash honesty puts her in the same class of current stellar songwriters like fellow emerging artist Gracie Abrams and even her idol, Phoebe Bridgers. (Humberstone says the latter’s Stranger in the Alps is one of her most-loved debut albums; when asked whom she would recruit for her own boygenius supergroup, she picks beabadoobee and Arlo Parks, saying that women in music right now “are running the whole show.”)

“Honestly, I think writing my songs is my way of protecting [my personal life] because I can take control and tell the stories how I want them to be told,” she says. Even so, she does worry about its reception. “I low-key hate releasing music,” she nearly whispers. “I love the writing process, and I love having [songs] in my pocket. I feel like it’s my dirty little secret. And then when it goes out, it’s just scary.”

Her best solution so far? Keep writing through it — she’s already thinking of her next project. Coming off sets at Lollapalooza Chicago, Outside Lands and the Reading and Leeds festivals in England, she may even continue her habit of writing on the road.

“It does feel like I’ve poured a lot of myself into [this album], and I am really, really proud of every song,” she says. “I’m just grateful that I am able to make [an album at all], and it sounds really cheesy, but that people will be waiting for it on the other side.”

Elton John ‘Back Home and in Good Health’ After Hospitalization for Fall

Elton John is back at home after spending the night in a French hospital following a fall. A spokesperson for the 76-year-old singer who recently completed his yearslong Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour confirmed to Billboard on Monday morning (Aug. 28) that following a slip at his home in the south of France on Sunday, “Elton visited the local hospital as a precautionary measure.”

The source added that following check-ups, John was “immediately discharged this morning and is now back at home and in good health.” Sir Elton, who has walked with a visible limp for several years, assured fans he was okay after a tabloid claimed he was “frail” alonside a picture of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer behind helped into a wheelchair at an airport in Germany last June. At the time, John said after a “rousing” two-and-a-half hour show he arrived at a closed Leipzig airport and faced an “extremely long walk” to his plane.

So, he said, he accepted a wheelchair ride to rest his hip; a previous hip injury had caused the postponement of his world tour due to a fall that doctors suggested required surgery. John wrapped the Yellow Brick tour in July after kicking it off in 2018 and, following a COVID-19 delay in 2020, picking it back up last year. After 330 shows that grossed a record $939.1 million and played to six million fans, John took sole control of the title of the highest-grossing tour in Billboard Boxscore history, besting pal Ed Sheeran’s two-year Divide Tour, which is at No. 2 with $776 million in grosses and attendance of 8.9 million.

Brandon Flowers Tossed The Killers’ New Album: ‘I Don’t Think You’ll See Us Making This Type of Music Anymore’

The Killers have been filling arenas for nearly two decades with their signature soaring rock anthems about strivers, dead-enders and dreamers searching for the heart of the American spirit. But if singer Brandon Flowers is to be believed, those days are over.

In an interview with England’s The Times, the 42-year-old frontman said despite just dropping the Depeche Mode-like yearning synth rock single “Your Side of Town,” from now on the band is looking forward and leaving their patented sound in the past.

“Halfway through recording I realized, ‘I can’t do this,’” Flowers told the paper about the song that was meant to appear on the band’s upcoming as-yet-untitled eighth studio album. “This isn’t the kind of record… I think this will be the… I don’t think you’ll see us making this type of music any more.”

Described as being nervous while discussing the creative break with the past — “Your Side of Town” has whiffs of the band’s new wave-inspired smash 2004 debut, Hot Fuss — Flowers admitted that he’s had a change of heart since the Killers released 2021’s concept record Pressure Machine. The latter was a collection of very personal Nebraska-era Springsteen-style Americana story songs inspired by the singer’s childhood in Nephi, Utah.

“This is the crisis I’m in,” Flowers said of the crossroads he finds himself at. “The Killers are my identity and our songs fill the seats, but I’m more fulfilled making music like Pressure Machine. I found a side of myself writing it that was strong. This was the guy I’d been looking for! I’m as proud of Hot Fuss as you can be for something you did when you were 20, but I’m not 20. So I’m thinking about the next phase of my life.”

Flowers said he’s simply a “different person” now and that “it’ll be difficult to go back,” suggesting that he’d like to make more emotional music that could play well in smaller rooms. “It is a conflict. It is just, well, at what point do I make that change?” he said. “Who in the band wants to do that too? No matter what, there will always be people who look at me and just think of Somebody Told Me. And I get that. But I’m interested in evolving.”

The interview also touched on a recent incident in Georgia, in which Flowers brought up a Russian fan and caused a bit of an international incident when he asked fans if it was okay and got roundly booed by the citizens of the nation that was partially invaded by Russia in 2008.

“I had to calm an impossible situation. We want our concerts to be communal and I had no idea words I was taught my entire life to represent a unity of the human family could be taken as being pro-Russian occupation,” he said of the attempt at reaching across the divide with a speech about brotherhood that fell flat. “We’re sad how this played out.”

Iggy Azalea Says She Had to Cut Show in Saudi Arabia Short After Serious Wardrobe Malfunction

Iggy Azalea had to cut short her headlining set in Saudi Arabia on Friday night at the Gamers8 e-sports event after suffering a wardrobe malfunction. According to People, in a since-deleted X post, the “Money Come” rapper said that local authorities told her she could not finish her show after her pants split mid-performance.

“Saudi Arabia please know to everyone at the show tonight… I LOVE YOU,” the “Fancy” rapper wrote. “And I’m soooooo sorry I wasn’t allowed to finish my show. It’s not the promoter who put on the show’s fault so show them kindness because they are amazing people and we all wanted to continue but were not allowed by authorities because of my pants splitting.”

In a follow-up, Azalea responded to a fan’s question about why she wasn’t allowed to just change pants by explaining that she did change her bottoms, but then accompanied that with an onstage comment that allegedly “sent authorities over the edge.”

The statement in question, Azalea said, was her imploring, “‘Ladies, make some noise, it’s a woman’s world.’” The rapper assured her fans she was fine either way. “I’m cool I just didn’t want the fans to be sad or angry at the show organizers cause it wasn’t their control or mine it was the police at the side of stage,” she added. According to People, Azalea also briefly shared a clip of the pants splitting on Instagram and an image of the ripped pants.

A video posted by a fan appeared to show the incident, in which Azalea knelt down on the stage on her knees in black vinyl leggings, with the left leg appearing to split from mid-shin to her upper groin. Saudi Arabia’s immigration website states that the official dress code for women in the predominantly Muslim country calls for them to “cover as much flesh as possible to avoid drawing unwelcome attention.” The Visit Saudi Arabia site adds that tourists are not expected to wear the same attire as locals, or to cover up to the same extent, “but it’s highly recommended that you dress modestly.”

The performance came right after Iggy dropped her new single, “Money Come,” which was accompanied by a video in which Azalea and her female cohorts stage a hostile takeover of an office, blasting the male corporate structure and making the men in office mud wrestle for her entertainment.

After More Than 40 Years Together, Los Temerarios Are Separating: Exclusive

It’s the end of an era: Los Temerarios are separating, Billboard has learned.

Led by brothers Adolfo and Gustavo Ángel, the band, one of the most iconic Mexican grupero/pop acts in Latin music, is splitting after more than 45 years.

In a statement shared with Billboard, Adolfo, Los Temerarios’ songwriter, producer and keyboardist, and Gustavo, the group’s lead singer, explain the decision while thanking fans for supporting them across four decades. “With the love that has united us since we were kids, the same that we feel for the vocation that we’ve had the privilege of working in for more than 46 years, we want to share that we’ve made the difficult decision of separating, closing one of the most important and gratifying cycles of our lives.”

Since releasing their first album in 1983, Los Temerarios helped popularize the grupero subgenre in Mexico and the United States in the late ’80s, early ’90s. Known for its romantic lyrics powered by electric guitars, keyboards and drums, Los Temerarios secured 41 entries on Billboard‘s Hot Latin Songs chart, 17 of which are top 10 hits, including four No. 1s (“Ya Me Voy Para Siempre,” “Por Qué Te Conocí,” “Que De Raro Tiene” and “Si Tú Te Vas”). On the Top Latin Albums chart, the group placed 23 top 10 sets, eight hit No. 1.

The statement continues, “We are eternally grateful to our fans that have so generously embraced our music with their hearts and have been the fuel and inspiration of our career. To the media who has supported us with respect and integrity throughout these years. To the promoters and collaborators who are part of this project, who’s mission is to expand our music made to honor love, the magic and mystery that unites us and gives life meaning. Everything that we express form this moment on will be in form of music and in our next shows where we’ll be giving you the best of us.”

While staying true to their core sound, Los Temerarios soundtracked multigenerational households across the U.S. and have, to date, been a touring titan going on stints almost every year. That came to a halt during the pandemic but earlier this year, the brothers returned to the stage with a special tour that celebrated the group’s more than 40 years trajectory. After spending a decade with Fonovisa, a division of Universal Music Latin Entertainment, Los Temerarios launched their own record label and publisher, Virtus, nearly 15 years ago, which played a major role in their longevity.

“At the beginning of our careers when we were looking for support from labels and executives, we weren’t well received. All we knew back then was that music was our life so we kept looking for options,” Adolfo told Billboard in February. “I thank my brother Gustavo for always standing by my side and supporting all the decisions I made for the band. One day, we decided to launch our label, our publisher, and it was one of the best decisions we could ever make. Staying relevant in this industry is not easy so we have nothing but gratitude for our fans, we feel very fortunate.”

Los Temerarios will complete their 2023 tour dates and have announced new dates for next year. “The touring schedule from September 2023 to November 2024 will be the last one we offer together,” Los Temerarios announce in the statement. “And we will do it with the same love and respect that we’ve always done tours with.”

Shakira to Receive Video Vanguard Award & Perform at 2023 MTV Video Music Awards

Shakira will make history at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 12, becoming the first South American artist to receive the Video Vanguard Award. The Colombian-born superstar will become the second Latina artist to receive that marquee award. Jennifer Lopez, who was born in the Bronx to Puerto Rican parents, received the honor five years ago.

Women have thoroughly dominated this category in recent years. Shakira follows Rihanna (2016), P!nk (2017), Lopez (2018), Missy Elliott (2019) and Nicki Minaj (2022). There was no recipient in 2020-21. The last man to win the award was Kanye West in 2015.

Shakira is also set to perform on the VMAs for the first time in 17 years. This maintains a recent VMAs tradition. Starting with Justin Timberlake in 2013, the Video Vanguard award has been accompanied by an extended performance from the recipient, usually featuring a career-spanning medley of hits.

Shakira is very likely to perform her 2023 smash “TQG,” a collab with Karol G that debuted and peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March. Karol G has already been announced as a performer on this year’s show (along with Demi Lovato, Måneskin and Stray Kids).

This has been one of Shakira’s biggest and busiest years. In January, she debuted and peaked at No. 9 on the Hot 100 with the Bizarrap collab “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” which made her the first female vocalist to reach the top 10 with a Spanish-language track. That single enabled Shakira to set 14 Guinness World Records, including the most streamed Latin track on Spotify in 24 hours, most viewed Latin video on YouTube in 24 hours, fastest Latin track to reach 100 million views on YouTube, and most streamed Latin track on Spotify in one week.

And that was just the start of Shakira’s red-hot year. As noted above, she reached No. 7 on the Hot 100 in March with “TQG,” making 2023 the first year in which she has had two songs peak in the top 10 on the all-genre chart. In April, Shakira was named Billboard’s Latin Woman of the Year. In July, she became the first artist to hold down the top three spots on Billboard’s Latin Pop Airplay chart in the list’s nearly 30-year history.

“Shakira is a true global force who continues to inspire and influence the masses with her unique, musical prowess,” Bruce Gillmer, president of music, music talent, programming and events, Paramount and chief content officer, Music, Paramount+, said in a statement. “She’s a trailblazer for women around the world and one of the first artists to lead the globalization of Latin music. Her massive impact across the musical landscape will be long-lasting as she continues to create and entertain at the highest level.”

The 2023 VMAs will air live from Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Shakira is a four-time VMAs nominee this year. She’s up for artist of the year; best Latin and best collaboration for “TQG”; and best Latin again for “Acróstico.”

The four-time VMAs winner took home her first Moon Person in 2000 for International Viewer’s Choice (Latin America North). She won again in that category in 2002. In 2006, she won best choreography for “Hips Don’t Lie,” which featured Wyclef Jean. The following year, she won Most Earth Shattering Collaboration – yes, that was an actual, competitive category – for “Beautiful Liar,” a collab with Beyoncé.

Shakira’s most recent VMAs performance was in 2006, where she teamed with Jean to perform the aforementioned “Hips Don’t Lie,” which was a video of the year nominee and a No. 1 hit on the Hot 100. In 2005, she made VMAs history with the show’s first performance entirely in Spanish – “La Tortura” featuring Alejandro Sanz. Shakira made her VMAs performance debut in 2002, with “Objection (Tango)” featuring her signature belly-dancing moves and an impressive crowd surf.

MTV and Toyota Motor North America, which is presenting the Video Vanguard Award for the first time, will celebrate Shakira’s honor through longform, music-centric content set to debut during the VMAs broadcast.

The Video Vanguard Award, which is presented to an artist for their “outstanding contributions and profound impact on music video and popular culture,” has arguably come to rival video of the year as the most anticipated award of the night.

The award was named in honor of Michael Jackson in 1991, but the channel has been moving away from the association in recent years, since the 2019 drama Leaving Neverland put a new focus on molestation allegations. The press release announcing Shakira as this year’s recipient included his name just once out of five references to the award.

Other artists who were thought to be in contention for the Video Vanguard Award this year included Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Drake, Selena Gomez, Bruno Mars, Jonas Brothers, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar and Katy Perry.

Taylor Swift leads this year’s nominations with eight nods, followed by SZA (six), Doja Cat, Kim Petras, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo and Sam Smith (five each), and BLACKPINK, Diddy and Shakira (four each). Shakira is the only one of these artists who has been confirmed as a performer on the show, though more artists are expected to be announced later this week.

Fans can vote for their favorites across 15 gender-neutral categories by visiting vote.mtv.com through Friday, Sept. 1; voting for best new artist will remain active into the show. Nominations for socially-voted categories, including group of the year and song of summer, will be announced at a later date.

MTV has yet to announce the host of this year’s show or the Global Icon award recipient. Last year’s show was co-hosted by LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow; the Global Icon award went to Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Bruce Gillmer and Den of Thieves co-founder Jesse Ignjatovic are executive producers of the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards. Barb Bialkowski is co-executive producer. Alicia Portugal and Jackie Barba serve as executives in charge of production. Wendy Plaut is executive in charge of celebrity talent. Lisa Lauricella is music talent executive.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Donates $1 Million to Jackson State University: ‘I Wouldn’t Be Here If It Wasn’t For HBCUs’

Sean “Diddy” Combs never forgot the advice his grandmother gave him, and over the weekend he put her words into action with a major donation to an HBCU (historically black college or university). “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for HBCUs,” Combs wrote on Instagram on Sunday (Aug. 27), along with a video of the hip-hop mogul presenting a $1 million check to the Jackson State University Development Foundation in honor of in Jackson, Mississippi.

“It is my honor and my responsibility to support the HBCUs! The work they are doing is to be commended! My grandmother raised me to sow my seed in my community and that’s what I’m going to continue to do!!” he added in the caption to the video taken between the first and second quarters of Jackson State’s decisive victory on Saturday against South Carolina State.

Combs, 53, had pledged the donation at the 2022 BET Awards while accepting a lifetime achievement award, saying he planned to donate $1 million to another HBCU, Howard University — where he was a student for two years before leaving to intern at Uptown Records — as well as Jackson State; in 2016, Diddy pledged $1 million to his alma mater to establish the Sean Combs Scholarship Fund.

“As someone who went to Howard University and understands the invaluable experience of attending historically Black colleges and universities, it’s important that we all do our part to protect and preserve their legacy,” said Combs of the donation. “This contribution to Jackson State isn’t just about making a financial donation, it’s about giving back to a part of our culture that has changed countless lives and assuring HBCU’s receive the support they deserve.”

“This contribution by one of the world’s greatest and most influential entertainers and businessmen is another historic moment in the legendary history of Jackson State University,” said JSU’s director of athletics/VP Ashley Robinson. “Beyond the financial investment, it’s what it represents that is paramount – the belief in the value of our football student-athletes both on and off the field, which provides an elite pathway to current and future successes.”

ARIA Awards 2023 Set For Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion

The 2023 ARIA Awards is locked in for Nov. 15, and will return to Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion.

Confirmed this week, it’s the ARIAs’ second successive year at the Hordern, a Sydney landmark with 100 years’ history and the site of countless concerts, from Frank Sinatra to Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, David Bowie, Queen and the Jackson Five.

From its grand opening in 1924 until 1983 (when the now demolished Sydney Entertainment Centre first opened its doors), the Hordern, with its 5,500-capacity, was the largest indoor venue in the country’s biggest city. Its reputation for hosting cracking concerts remains very much intact.

“Since 1987,” comments ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd, “the ARIA Awards have represented the pinnacle of achievement in Australian music. The incredible releases over the last 12 months prove there’s no shortage of world-class talent on our shores, and Nov. 15 is our opportunity to showcase a year of amazing Australian music to the world.”

The Australian recording industry’s flagship awards ceremony will premiere live on Stan for the first time (from 5pm local time). That live stream will be followed by a free-to-air feed from commercial TV broadcaster the Nine Network (from 7.30pm local time) with performances and moments available on-demand on the @ARIA.official YouTube channel.

The 2023 edition of the ARIAs marks the fifth year in partnership with streaming giant YouTube, an alliance which has reached some 29 million views. Last year’s awards captured more than 1.7 million views on the platform, according to YouTube, which will also live stream the red carpet globally.

“Sydney is already the centre of much of the recorded music industry, but we want to make music a bigger part of our state’s story,” comments John Graham, minister for the arts, minister for music and the night-time economy and minister for jobs and tourism. “I want to thank ARIA for their advocacy for the industry.”

More announcements on the 37th annual ARIA Awards, including nominations, will be announced “very soon,” organizers state.

The 2023 ARIA Awards event team is led by Roving Enterprises (production), and includes executive producer Craig Campbell and event producers Second Sunday. Twofold Media handles PR and red carpet, and White Noise Agency is tasked with sponsorship.

Exorcism becomes the band’s fourth U.K. top 10 album, and highest chart position since their 2009 sophomore album Which Bitch, which peaked at No. 3. The View’s career got off to a hot star with debut Hats Off to the Buskers hitting No. 1 back in 2007. That LP featured the View’s first and only U.K. top 10 single, “Same Jeans,” which reached No. 3 in the year of release.

Meanwhile, U.S. singer and actor Renee Rapp earns her first U.K. top 10 with Snow Angel (Interscope), which flies in at No. 7.

Her son Riley helped grow the song’s profile on social media, including TikTok, where the track had been prominent throughout its charts run run. Taken from Trainor’s album Takin It Back, “Made You Look” was announced just after Trainor shared with the world the good news of her pregnancy with a second child.

Also at the Streamys, the brothers Kevin, Jon and Nick Jonas won the crossover category.
