Renée Rapp Says ‘Snow Angel’ Title Track Was Inspired By Drugging That Let Her ‘Missing For Seven Hours’

Renée Rapp is speaking out about the scary 2022 incident that inspired the urgent title track to her Snow Angel album. The former The Sex Lives of College Girls star recently released her debut full-length album on Interscope — with the title song serving as the first single — and in a new interview with On Purpose podcast host Jay Shetty she revealed that dramatic song was inspired by a traumatic experience last year in which she was drugged and lost nearly an entire night.

“I was drugged, and I had just been missing for seven hours,” Rapp told Shetty about a night out in 2022 when she went to a party with a new group of friends after a breakup. “I really let my judgment go when it came to the people that were around me. We were all out, and it was just situation after situation where they were just not trustworthy, and then the next thing you knew, I was face up, laying down in a bathroom stall in a hotel bar, just waking up at 5 in the morning, completely alone.”

Rapp said when she woke up alone in the bathroom stall early in the morning she had no idea what happened and saw that she’d missed two texts from people she’d started hanging out with the night before.

“First to arrive, last to leave/ What’s misery without company?/ It’s hard to laugh when it’s hard to breathe/ It’s white outside, but red underneath,” she sings in the opening verse of the song before dipping into the pre-chorus, “Feel the tip of my nose/ It’s burning, but it’s ice cold.”

Rapp said when she woke up the next day she saw blood on her pants and had no idea what happened during that lost time. “I was drugged, and I had just been missing for seven hours. I stopped being friends with those people and stopped doing as much partying as I was doing,” she said. “I told my parents, told some of my friends. I explained it in a very matter-of-fact way, and they were all very concerned and I didn’t even understand what was happening.”

It was hard to process the night at first and she couldn’t wrap her head around what happened for several months. But once Rapp started working with the song’s co-writer, Alexander “23” Glantz, they found a way to turn the scary event into a moving song.

“‘I really want to write a song about this,’” she said of the incident she turned over-and-over in her mind, telling the story to a number of friends who didn’t seem to be comprehend what she was saying. “We started writing it, and it was just the two of us. And the entire time I was writing it, I felt nothing,” Rapp said. “Until we recorded the song and the whole thing was done and I played it for my friends and my manager and everybody was like, ‘This is insane.’ But for me, that whole year of my life was inherent resilience.”

The good news is that Rapp, 23, said she’s cut ties with those people, but she still doesn’t know exactly how she feels about it. “I just know that I feel weird… and very resilient,” she said. “I was just like, ‘I don’t care what you know or what you claim to know or don’t know.’ I just want to let it go.”

Rapp wil kick off her Snow Hard Feelings Tour in Houston, TX on Sept. 15.

Doja Cat Eyes First U.K. No. 1 With ‘Paint The Town Red’

Doja Cat has another fine chance to capture her first U.K. chart crown with “Paint The Town Red.”

Based on midweek sales and streaming data published by the Official Charts Company, “Paint The Town Red” (via Kemosabe Records/RCA Records) is in pole position.

The U.S. pop singer and rapper will hope for a different result from last week, when “Paint The Town Red” led at the midweek stage, before being outraced in the final straight by Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire” (Geffen). Doja Cat’s Scarlet single finished the last chart cycle at No. 2, an equal career high (“Say So” also finished in the runner-up position).

As it stands, Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” (EMI) lifts 4-2, as “Vampire” dips 1-3.

Meanwhile, Calvin Harris and Sam Smith’s latest collaboration, “Desire” (Columbia), could climb into the top 5 for the first time. It’s up 7-5 on the Official Chart Update.

Fred Again’s “Adore U” (Atlantic) could become the red hot producer’s first Top 10 single as a solo artist. “Adore U” rises 16-10 on the chart blast.

Australia’s pop princess Kylie Minogue is readying the release of her 16th studio album, Tension (due out Sept. 22 via BMG). The title track is set to arrive at No. 19 on the national chart, for what should be Kylie’s 53rd top 40 hit in the U.K. “Tension” is the followup to “Padam Padam,” which crashed the top 10 earlier this year, reaching No. 8.

English singer and songwriter Kenya Grace has never impacted the Official Singles Chart. That could be about to change, as “Strangers” (Major Recordings) blasts to No. 22 on the midweek tally.

Finally, Nicki Minaj’s “Last Time I Saw You” (Republic Records). The Pink Friday 2 cut could bow at No. 25, for what would be the rap star’s 44th U.K. top 40 single. Minaj’s Pink Friday sequel is due out Nov. 17.

The Official U.K. Singles Chart will be presented late Friday, Sept. 8.

CMA Awards 2023 Predictions: Who Could Score Nominations in the Main Categories?

Final nominees for the 57th CMA Awards will be announced Thursday at 8 a.m. ET. It’s been an exceptional year for country music, with artists like Morgan Wallen and Luke Combs dominating the pop and country charts. Newer acts like Zach Bryan and Oliver Anthony Music have seemingly come out of nowhere to top the charts and, in some cases, the national conversation.

Many of the acts who have broken through this year, like Jelly Roll and Lainey Wilson, who swept the Academy of Country Music Awards, don’t sound like anyone who has come before them.

While it’s easy to predict a handful of the nominees, several of the categories are harder to figure out because in some cases, like new artist of the year, there is such a wealth of talent to be considered.

The CMA Awards, which are voted on by eligible CMA members, will be handed out Nov. 8. Luke Bryan and Peyton Manning return as co-hosts on the program, which will air live on ABC. The eligibility period for the 2023 show is July 1, 2022-June 30, 2023. According to CMA rules, “singles, albums, music videos and qualified music products for the annual show must have been released or reached peak national prominence during the eligibility period.”

Below are my predictions for the artist categories. I decided to go young this year, given the strength of some of the artists coming up.

A Timeline of Joe Jonas & Sophie Turner’s Relationship

From two weddings & two children to a divorce filing, here’s a look at the former couple’s relationship.

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner are divorcing after four years of marriage and two children together. The Jonas Brothers singer filed for divorce on Sept. 5, Billboard confirmed.

In his petition, the musician said that his union with the Game of Thrones actress “is irretrievably broken,” according to the Today show, which obtained the filing.

News of their split came as a surprise, as the pair displayed no signs that their marriage was on the rocks, with the actress sharing photos with the musician backstage at Jonas Brothers concerts and playfully teasing him on social media. In the days after rumors of a split began to surface, the singer wore his ring onstage and even shared a photo of himself wearing his wedding band hours before news broke that he had filed for divorce.

Though their romance has come to an end, it wasn’t always tough times for Jonas and Turner. After getting engaged to Jonas — who first reached out to the actress via an Instagram DM in 2016 — Turner even admitted that she didn’t think she’d ever marry. “I was fully preparing myself to be single for the rest of my life,” she told Rolling Stone in March 2019. “I think once you’ve found the right person, you just know.”

From sliding into DMs to their two 2019 weddings (a surprise Vegas ceremony first, then an elegant affair in France) and welcoming two children, the former couple have shared many sweet moments together during their romance. Here’s a look back at the love story of Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner.

Chloe Sings ‘Surprise,’ ‘Body Do’ & More ‘In Pieces’ Standouts for Tiny Desk Concert: Watch

Chloe Bailey is the latest star to stop by NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series, appearing on the Monday installment to sing tracks from her debut studio album In Pieces.

The Praise This star mostly matched her band, who wore all black, though she opted for an army-green skirt to stand out. The singer kicked off the set with a soulful live rendition of her 2022 single “Surprise,” hitting several soaring high notes with ease, much to the delight of the listeners in attendance.

By the time “Body Do” rolled around in the setlist, Chloe — one-half of the duo Chloe x Halle, with her sister Halle Bailey — instructed the attendees to move their bodies to the beat of the track, which was infused with salsa and mambo instrumentation for its live version. Before launching into the lyrics, the singer finally introduced herself: “I’m Chloe — Miss Bailey if you nasty. I’m so happy to be here with you all. I have a question for you guys: Do you ever wonder who else is f—ing our man?”

Fleshing out the rest of the set were more tracks from In Pieces, including its title track, “I Don’t Mind,” “Worried” and “Cheatback.”

Chloe’s sister Halle could be slated for her own Tiny Desk concert in the coming months: In a recent feature with Cosmopolitan, The Little Mermaid star revealed that her debut solo LP will “definitely” be released “before the end of the year.”

Hot Boys Star B.G. Released From Prison

B.G., a founding member of the popular ’90s rap group Hot Boys, was released from prison Tuesday (Sept. 6) after serving 12 years for gun possession and witness tampering, a Cash Money rep confirmed to Billboard.

Cash Money founder Birdman was on Instagram Live when he greeted his New Orleans comrade with a big hug, welcoming him home. He also came bearing gifts, and B.G. was overwhelmed with emotions upon his release.

In 2009, B.G. was arrested during a traffic stop where cops discovered three guns inside his vehicle, with two of them stolen. Two years later, he entered a guilty plea deal for two counts of firearm possession and one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice. He received a 14-year federal prison sentence.

This past weekend, B.G. celebrated his 43rd birthday on Instagram, signaling his upcoming status as a free man. “After 12 winters and 13 summers, I see the end zone. It’s my last #Birthday being buried alive. This year I’m celebrating the whole Virgo cycle, matter of fact, from this year forward I’m living and celebrating like everyday is #MyBIRTHDAY,” he wrote.

“The main focus, is to stay focused,” the post continued. “I’m not letting nobody rob me of my productivity, prosperity, positivity and peace of mind. My dreams then got bigger and my vision is clearer. 13 years was more then enough time for me to change the reckless path I was on.”

B.G. helped construct The Hot Boys in the late ’90s, which featured Lil Wayne, Juvenile and Turk. The crew enjoyed success with their 1999 platinum album Guerrilla Warfare, which peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and spawned the breakout hits “I Need a Hot Girl” and “We on Fire.” B.G.’s biggest win came from his fourth album, 1999’s Chopper City in the Ghetto, which birthed the phrase “Bling Bling” in the song of the same name, a No. 36 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

Joe Jonas Files for Divorce From Sophie Turner

After four years of marriage, Joe Jonas has filed for divorce from Sophie Turner.

The Jonas Brothers singer filed a petition for dissolution of marriage on Tuesday (Sept. 5) that stated “the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken.”

The news comes amid a firestorm of rumors alleging a breakup, but both Jonas’ and Turner’s social media activity seemed to indicate that there was no merit to the divorce reports. On Monday, Jonas posted a photo that not-so-subtly flaunted his wedding ring days after divorce rumors reached a fever pitch. As for Turner, her most recent Instagram post, dated Aug. 14, celebrated Jonas and his brothers’ latest world tour. On Aug. 12, the Grammy-nominated trio kicked off their massive “Five Albums. One Night. The World Tour” trek at Yankee Stadium in The Bronx, New York.

Nonetheless, the court documents, which were filed in Miami-Dade County, Florida, reveal a different story. Jonas’ petition states that the couple’s two children have been residing with him in Miami and other U.S. locations but that “it is in the best interests of the minor children that the parties have shared parental responsibility.” Moreover, his petition indicates some kind of prenuptial agreement between the couple.

Billboard has reached out to reps for both Jonas and Turner, as well as Jonas’ lawyer.

Jonas and Turner first met in 2016. They were engaged the following year and married in 2019. The couple legally married in Las Vegas in May 2019, a month before having a full ceremony with friends and family at Chateau de Tourreau in the south of France. Jonas and Turner share two children: daughter Willa and a second daughter who arrived in July and whose name is yet to be revealed.

The Jonas Brothers have amassed six top 10 albums on the Billboard 200, including three No. 1s. The sibling band has also scored three top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including the 2019 No. 1 hit “Sucker.”

Joe Jonas’ band DNCE has charted a pair of projects on the Billboard 200. Their self-titled debut studio album topped out at No. 17 and spawned the Hot 100 top 10 hit “Cake by the Ocean.” As a soloist, Jonas reached No. 15 on the Billboard 200 with his debut album and No. 9 on the Hot 100 with the Camp Rock soundtrack single “This Is Me” (with Demi Lovato).

Joe Jonas Shows Off His Wedding Ring Amid Rumors of Divorce From Sophie Turner

While Jonas Brothers fans have been “Burnin’ Up” over rumors surrounding Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner‘s relationship, the JoBro is letting his actions speak louder than his words.

After a report from TMZ over the weekend claimed that Jonas was seeking a divorce from Turner, with People reporting that he has obtained a divorce lawyer, the star shared a photo on his Instagram on Monday (Sept. 4) that showed him wearing his wedding ring. The captionless black-and-white photo shows Jonas posing for the camera in a graphic T-shirt, but fans immediately spotted his prominently placed left hand sporting his wedding band. “Y’all really made this man post a singular picture of himself wearing his ring because of rumors going around the internet lmao,” one Instagram user wrote.

Eagle-eyed fans also spotted the “Cake By the Ocean” singer wearing his ring during the group’s tour stop in Austin on Sunday (Sept. 3).

Neither Jonas nor Turner have spoken publicly about the ongoing rumors of their divorce, and Billboard has reached out to both for comment.

The new photograph comes days after TMZ claimed in a report that representatives for Jonas had sought out and met with “two L.A.-area divorce lawyers,” and that the star was “on the cusp of filing” for a divorce from Turner.

The pair tied the knot in May 2019, when they were wed in Las Vegas shortly following the band’s performance at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards. The following month, Jonas and Turner threw a secret second wedding in Sarrians, France.

All the speculation comes during the Jonas Brothers’ ongoing North American tour, which makes its next stop at the Footprint Center in Phoenix on Wednesday, Sept. 6. The tour is set to conclude on Dec. 9 in Brooklyn, N.Y. before heading to Australia and Europe in 2024.
