Here Are the Lyrics to Doja Cat’s ‘Paint the Town Red’

Doja Cat topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Paint the Town Red,” marking the rapper/singer’s second career leader, following “Say So,” featuring Nicki Minaj, in 2020.

The song will be featured on her fourth studio album, Scarlet, which will arrive on Sept. 22. Scarlet will follow Doja Cat’s blockbuster 2021 album Planet Her, which launched five top 20 Hot 100 hits: “Kiss Me More” featuring SZA (No. 3 peak); “You Right” with The Weeknd (No. 11); “Need to Know” (No. 8); “Woman” (No. 7); and “Get Into It (Yuh)” (No. 20).

Yeah, bi—, I said what I said
I’d rather be famous instead
I let all that get to my head
I don’t care, I paint the town red
Bi—, I said what I said
I’d rather be famous instead
I let all that get to my head
I don’t care, I paint the town red

Mm, she the devil
She a bad lil’ bi—, she a rebel
She put her foot to the pedal
It’ll take a whole lot for me to settle
Mm, she the devil
She a bad lil’ bi—, she a rebel
She put her foot to the pedal
It’ll take a whole lot for me to settle (yeah, yeah)

Said, my happiness is all of your misery
I put good dick all in my kidneys
This Margiel’ don’t come with no jealousy
My illness don’t come with no remedy
I am so much fun without Hennessy
They just want my love and my energy
You can’t talk no sh– without penalties
Bi—, I’m in yo’ sh– if you send for me
I’m going to glow up one more time
Trust me, I have magical foresight
You gon’ see me sleepin’ in courtside
You gon’ see me eatin’ ten more times
Ugh, you can’t take that bi— nowhere
Ugh, I look better with no hair
Ugh, ain’t no sign I can’t smoke here
Ugh (yeah), gimme the chance and I’ll go there

Yeah, bi—, I said what I said
I’d rather be famous instead
I let all that get to my head

It’ll take a whole lot (yeah) for me to settle (yeah)

Said pop make money, now you try, bi—
You could use a revamp with a new vibe, sis
I don’t need a big feature or a new sidekick
I don’t need a new fan ’cause my boo like it
I don’t need to wear a wig to make you like it
I’m a two-time bi—, you ain’t knew I’d win?
Throw a shot like you tryna have a food fight then
All my opps waitin’ for me to be you, I bet
Said I got drive, I don’t need a car
Money really all that we fiendin’ for
I’m doin’ things they ain’t seen before
Fans ain’t dumb, but extremists are
I’m a demon lord
Fall off what? I ain’t seen the horse
Called your bluff, better cite the source
Fame ain’t somethin’ that I need no more

‘Cause, bi—, I said what I said
I’d rather be famous instead
I let all that get to my head
I don’t care, I paint the town red
Bi—, I said what I said
I’d rather be famous instead
I let all that get to my head
I don’t care, I paint the town red

Calvin Harris & Vick Hope Get Married in Northeast England

Calvin Harris is a married man. The producer tied the knot with radio host Vick Hope on Saturday (Sept. 9), according to People.

The couple, who has been engaged since last year, held their reception in a tent on the grounds of Hulne Priory, Alnwick, Northumberland, while the ceremony took place outside, according to the publication. The Sun UK reported that Nile Rodgers and his band Chic performed for guests, which included BBC radio DJs Scott Mills, Vernon Kay and Jordan North. Billboard has reached out to Harris’ team for more information.

“You know what, I was very overwhelmed by the interest in it, but I’m keeping my private life private,” Hope previously told Hello! Magazine about their relationship. “I’ve never really experienced this before about my private life, but it’s just for us.”

Harris recently reunited with Ellie Goulding for trance anthem, “Miracle,” marking the duo’s third collaboration in 10 years. Together, they hit No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August of 2013 with “I Need Your Love.” Coming from Harris’ all time classic LP 18 Months, the song spent 25 weeks on the chart and served as a key track of the EDM era. 2014’s “Outside” — from Harris’ Motion — reached No. 29 on the Hot 100 and spent 20 weeks on the chart.

The Scottish DJ also returned to Coachella this year, following the release of his 2022 LP Funk Wav Bounces Vol. II, which featured collaborators including Halsey, Justin Timberlake, Snoop Dogg and many more.

Jimmy Buffett’s ‘Margaritaville’ Returns to Billboard Hot 100 in Top 40

Jimmy Buffett’s signature song “Margaritaville,” among his many classics, returns to the Billboard Hot 100 this week, re-entering at No. 38 on the Sept. 16-dated ranking. It reached No. 8 in July 1977 and had last appeared on the chart dated Aug. 27, 1977.

Meanwhile, Buffett posthumously boasts the week’s top-selling song with the single, as well as the top-selling album, Songs You Know By Heart: Jimmy Buffett’s Greatest Hit(s).

As previously reported, the singer-songwriter died Sept. 1 at age 76. As announced on his website and social media accounts, “Jimmy passed away on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs,” the Sept. 2 post reads. “He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”

“Margaritaville” contributes to Buffett’s big week on multiple Billboard charts, as fans flocked to his trademark feel-good sound following his death. In the Sept. 1-7 tracking week, his song catalog surged by 1,476% to 78.6 million official on-demand streams and 7,022% to 103,000 paid downloads in the U.S., according to Luminate. His albums collectively soared by 2,378% to 109,000 equivalent album units in that span. Further, his all-format radio airplay audience bounded by 338% to 21.2 million.

‘Margaritaville’ & More on Song Charts

“Margaritaville” gained by 720% to 8.1 million streams; 954% to 1.9 million in airplay audience among Hot 100-reporting stations; and 8,415% to 16,000 sold in the tracking week. It re-enters as Buffett’s first No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart and at No. 41 on Streaming Songs. It’s also No. 1 on Country Digital Song Sales and Rock Digital Song Sales and No. 10 on Rock Streaming Songs and No. 17 on Country Streaming Songs.

Before this week, Buffett last charted on the Hot 100 dated Oct. 8, 2011, as featured on Zac Brown Band’s No. 18-peaking “Knee Deep,” the most recent of 13 songs, including seven top 40 hits, that he sent onto the survey during his lifetime.

Along with its Hot 100 re-entry, “Margaritaville” places at No. 7 on Hot Rock Songs, No. 9 on Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and No. 14 on Hot Country Songs, all of which share the Hot 100’s multimetric methodology.

Alan Jackson and Buffett’s “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” also re-enters Hot Country Songs, at No. 22, with 6.1 million streams (up 346%), 2.3 million in airplay audience (up 66%) and 7,000 sold (up 3,543%). The song dominated the chart for eight weeks in 2003.

Plus, Buffett’s “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” from 1978, hits Hot Rock Songs at No. 19 and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs at No. 22, with 4.5 million streams (up 1,454%), 554,000 in radio reach (up from a nominal sum) and 6,000 sold (up 5,402%).

With 12 Buffett titles on the latest Digital Song Sales chart, here’s a recap:

‘Greatest Hit(s)’ & ‘Ballads’ on Album Charts

On the Billboard 200, Songs You Know By Heart: Jimmy Buffett’s Greatest Hit(s), featuring “Margaritaville” (as referenced in the set’s wry title), re-enters at No. 4, up 2,106% to 52,000 equivalent album units Sept. 1-7, according to Luminate. Released in 1985, the album previously peaked at No. 100 that year. The collection also holds the No. 2 spot on Top Country Albums, Top Rock & Alternative Albums, Top Rock Albums and Americana/Folk Albums. With 15,000 copies sold, it re-enters Top Album Sales at No. 1, ranking as the week’s top-selling album among all genres.

Additionally, Boats Beaches Bars & Ballads, Buffett’s best-of release from 1992 that includes rarities and previously unreleased songs, re-enters the Billboard 200 at a new No. 53 high, with 15,000 units (up 4,750%). It’s also No. 11 on Top Rock Albums and No. 15 on Top Rock & Alternative Albums.

“I’m glad I got 50 years of albums in me,” the Billboard alum mused in 2020. “This thing’s been an absolute joy. We’ve figured out ways to keep it going. I think it’s really about learning to be a performer before anything else and always trying to better yourself on stage. That’s the key, that core experience, and what’s kept me going. It’s been a good run.”

Ed Sheeran Crashes Las Vegas Wedding With a ‘Magical’ Performance: Watch

Ed Sheeran can officially add “professional wedding crasher” to his résumé.

In a video posted to Sheeran’s Instagram, he plays a yet-to-be-released track for a couple getting ready to exchange vows at a Las Vegas wedding chapel.

The clip kicks off with the couple — revealed to be Jordan and Carter Lindenfield, according to Fox 5 Vegas — holding each other’s hands and preparing to say “I do,” when Sheeran, with his acoustic guitar and a few backup singers, emerges to play “Magical” from his forthcoming album, Autumn Variations, arriving Sept. 29.

“This is how it feels to be in love/ This is magical, this is magical/ Is this how it feels to be in love?/ This is magical, this is magical,” Sheeran sings on the chorus. The astonished pair, after saying “I do,” ask for a photo with Sheeran, who signed their marriage certificate as a witness. (The wedding crashing comes after Sheeran needed to postpone his Las Vegas concert at Allegiant Stadium following excessive heat in the city.)

“Crashed a wedding, this is Magical x,” the singer captioned the video.

The newly minted Mrs. Lindenfield wrote in the comments section, “THANK YOU SO MUCH for the most magical day of our lives … we’ll truly never forget this or the wedding advice you gave us.”

In her own post, Lindenfield added, “We’re still processing what an unforgettable moment this was! Thank you @teddysphotos for truly making our special day magical.”

Watch Sheeran give the couple a wedding they’ll never forget in the video below.

Naoshi Fujikura on Universal Music Japan Strategy for Producing Global Stars & Future Goals: Interview

Billboard‘s International Power Players annual list recognizes leaders driving the success of the music business in countries outside the United States. Universal Music Japan President and CEO Naoshi Fujikura was chosen from the music industry leaders of the world for inclusion in the list a third consecutive time, making this his fourth appearance on the list.

Billboard Japan spoke with Fujikura in recognition of his selection for the list, where he delved into Universal Music Group’s expectations for Japan and the challenges involved in creating global hits.

You were chosen for the fourth time this year in recognition of your successes, such as making King & Prince a million-seller. How has reaching a million CD sales been seen by the Universal Music Group as a whole?

Naoshi Fujikura: Here in Japan, the market is changing and digital is also a priority, but we have still been able to achieve huge success with CD sales, utilizing our unique business insights and data analysis to better understand what fans want, what the market wants and how to maximize the opportunities for each artist. For UMG as a whole, it provides renewed perspective on how dynamic the Japanese music market is, because for any artist to sell a million CDs today is a huge achievement for any project – creatively, commercially and for the company as a whole, especially when it is done in one country and in one week.

What is UMG expecting from Universal Music Japan?

Fujikura: We’re always told, “now it’s your turn…” but that’s not something specific to Japan alone, it is a companywide goal. Our global leadership trusts us to lead and innovate here in Japan, but also encourages us to find and produce “global stars.” In the past, these were generally artists that have signed with international labels that had strong fanbases in North America, U.K. and Europe. Today, in the streaming age, there are many artists from outside the Anglosphere now claiming the top chart positions around the world – from BTS, Karol G or Bad Bunny. This is thanks to both the global reach of streaming, and the age of content sharing and discovery. Language is no longer the barrier it once was in exporting music to new markets, and that fits both with the global ambitions of the company, but also our own desire to introduce the best Japanese music and culture to new audiences worldwide.

What is Japan’s strategy for producing a global star?

Fujikura: We’re now considering multiple different approaches. The first is to produce artists that become stars with the support of a fandom, like BTS and King & Prince.

The second is what we call the “IP-based” approach, creating a hit linked to some form of video entertainment, whether that is Anime or another piece of Japanese culture that exposes global audiences to new sounds. For example, in recent times we had great success for RADWIMPS with Your Name, and in the last two years we’ve had Ado with One Piece Film Red and Hiromi Uehara with Blue Giant respectively.

The third is through hits that generate a viral buzz on local, regional or even global social networks and spread further through UGC, which we have achieved with our artists Fujii Kaze and imase. Fujii Kaze’s “Shinunoga E-wa” became popular through UGC in Thailand, and from there it spread to South Asia, India, Europe, and the U.S. Imase’s “Night Dancer” was popularized by BTS’s Jungkook and Stray Kids, and now he’s well-known in Korea, rather than just in Japan.

Joe Hisashi, one of Japan’s most respected composers, is now being listened to more than ever globally, thanks to his music being featured on playlists designed to mirror audience mood and lifestyle, with themes like “Sleep” or “Focus”. These plays have helped boost awareness of his skill as a composer, and helped to drive his most recent album – A Symphonic Celebration – Music from the Studio Ghibli films of Hayao Miyazaki, (Deutsche Grammophon) to the top of the U.S. Billboard Classical Albums and Classical Crossover Albums charts in July. In this area, there is a lot of generic faceless music produced, but Joe is a prime example of where great art and music can cut through the noise and captivate new listeners.

The number of ways that musical works can be shared with the world is steadily growing, so we expect these four approaches to evolve as fan discovery and consumption changes in the future.

The rapid penetration of global streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music must also be an extremely significant factor. Now music from Japan can be shared everywhere, and people around the world can listen to new releases at the same time. This can generate a furor of excitement worldwide, with zero time lag.

Fujikura: Yes, but while this provides Japan with opportunities, it also provides everywhere else in the world with those same opportunities. The markets of China and India have over 1.4 billion people, and in every country, people tend to love their local artists. But what makes a superstar, a true global superstar is the ability to transcend cultural, language and geographical barriers. You can’t forget where it all begins, with the strengths of individual artists, having talented artists and great music is the still the most important factor of all.

Right, Universal Music is a global music company, so it also has the mission of making artists in parts of the Universal Group outside Japan into hit artists in Japan, too.

Fujikura: Exactly. Until about 20 or 30 years ago, international music accounted for roughly 30% of music releases in Japan, and domestic repertoire accounted for roughly 70%, but now Japanese and Korean music account for roughly 90% or more. The idea that when an artist makes it big in the U.S, they will also become a hit artist in Japan is now 30 years out of date. The global spread of UMG’s repertoire, particularly through IP-based and UGC consumption has also proven effective for bringing international artists to Japan, and I think these approaches will continue to become more defined in the future.

The rise in streaming sales is driving ongoing, positive music market growth in Japan and worldwide. However, the rate of growth of that streaming is slowing, and new market development is starting to take place. What can you share with us about Universal Music’s future moves?

Fujikura: At UMG, we’ve always had an unrelenting dedication to discovering talented artists and bringing them to the world. Each market is uniquely different, and while streaming services got off to a slow start in Japan, there is still a lot of room for growth. As the world-leader in music based entertainment, UMG is dedicated to innovating, improving the user experience and to finding ways to attract new audiences to engage with the power of music. Also, as I mentioned at the start, in Japan we can still optimize the potential of physical product sales for our artists, and overall, I think the Japanese music market still holds great potential.

The first music I bought were vinyl records. Since then, technology has advanced (to cassettes, CDs, downloads and to streaming) and the formats used to deliver music have also changed dramatically. Today, fandom for artists has also stimulated demand for physical and collectible products, and we are now at a two-decade high in global vinyl sales once again. Technology will continue to change, and we’ll see new products, services and models created. One thing that will remain constant is that there will always be talented people out there who excite listeners. Our job is to discover these artists, help polish them, and share them with the world. Even if the ways we offer music change, we’ll continue to share the value and appeal of artists.

*NSYNC Fans Buzzing About Possible VMAs Reunion as Members Are Spotted Around NYC

It’s tearin’ up our hearts that *NSYNC are potentially in the same city.

Fans noticed that at least three members of the group — Justin Timberlake, Joey Fatone and Lance Bass — are in New York City as of Monday (Sept. 11), the day before the MTV Video Music Awards are set to hit the Prudential Center in nearby Newark, New Jersey. Meanwhile, JC Chasez was photographed on a private plane, though there wasn’t any indication as to where he was traveling. While it’s unclear where Chris Kirkpatrick is currently, he posted a 9/11 tribute to his Instagram page on Monday featuring a photo of an NYFD fire truck in Manhattan that he seemingly took himself.

At the time of publication, there is no confirmation of a reunion.

Rumors have been swirling that the band may have reunited to record new music together after a number of Trolls Band Together posters were posted in New York, featuring the first letter of the *NSYNC logo and a QR code. The code takes you to this site, which teases a whistling pop tune. Timberlake stars in the upcoming film as Branch, alongside other stars including Camila Cabello, Amy Schumer, Troye Sivan, Daveed Diggs, Kid Cudi, Zooey Deschanel, RuPaul Charles, Anderson .Paak and many more.

If the rumors are true, a new song would mark the group’s first musical release together since 2002. A reunion at the VMAs on Tuesday (Sept. 12) would also mark 10 years since their last reunion on the awards show’s stage in 2013, for Timberlake’s Video Vanguard Award medley.

In 2019, Chasez, Kirkpatrick, Fatone and Bass joined Ariana Grande onstage during her headlining Coachella set to perform “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” and “Tearin’ Up My Heart,” without Timberlake.

Cher Announces First Christmas Album: ‘Are You Spending Christmas With Me?’

Get ready for a very Cher Christmas! The “Believe” singer confirmed that her first holiday album is on the way with a pair of recent Instagram posts.

“Are you spending Christmas with me? #cherchristmas,” the 77-year-old wrote via instagram last week, captioning a holiday-appropriate picture of her standing on a massive snowball wearing an oversize white button-down shirt and wide-leg blue jeans with twinkling rhinestones, with red and silver metallic ornaments floating in the air.

Cher captioned the second teaser post, shared over the weekend, “Christmas already? But I’ve got nothing to wear…” The photo featured Cher in a platinum-blond wig while wearing a metallic, sequined floor-length gown, with a frozen tundra as the backdrop. (“I can’t believe Cher just re-froze the arctic ice sheet,” one fan joked in the comments section.)

While the “If I Could Turn Back Time” singer did not reveal when the Christmas album will be released, she sat down with Good Morning Britain last week and shared additional hints about what fans can expect from the record.

“It’s a Cher Christmas album. It’s not your mother’s Christmas album,” Cher teased on the daytime program, adding that she is “really, really excited because there’s millions of people on it, and I’ve never had duets. I’ve never had people on any of my records.” The pop veteran kept mum about exactly who will be featured on the album since the collaborations were a “last-minute thing,” but did say the artist features are “special.”

For the record, one of Cher’s biggest hits of the 1980s was a duet. “After All,” which she recorded with Peter Cetera, reached No. 6 in May 1989 and went on to receive an Oscar nomination for best original song.

Forget Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup: We have Doja Cat, Ice Spice and Doechii.

The three rappers took Instagram by storm on Monday (Sept. 11) with a series of snaps from a New York Fashion Week afterparty on Sunday night.

“Come see us all on tour and central cee is a great dude also my pepperonis,” Doja captioned an eclectic photo set that featured cameos from “Barbie World” producer RIOTUSA and U.K. rapper Central Cee, the artist behind the U.K. No. 2 hit “Doja.”

Ice Spice posted a similar photo dump, with hers featuring a few glimpses of “Sh– Me Out” rapper NLE Choppa. “Cench riot doechii doja,” Ice wrote in the caption. Her post comes the same day as the announcement of her new collaboration with Dunkin’ Donuts; more details surrounding the collaboration will be revealed on Sept. 13.

Doechii, whose “What It Is (Block Boy)” reaches the top 10 on Pop Airplay this week (No. 10, chart dated Sept. 16, 2023), also shared her own collection of photos, captioned, “real life power puff girls.” In her photo set, the “Persuasive” rapper included a behind-the-scenes video of her, Doja Cat and Ice Spice posing for a bevy of cameras.

The union of Doja, Ice and Doechii wasn’t just a one-off girls’ night out: The three rap stars are set to hit the road this fall. Ice Spice and Doechii will serve as opening acts for Doja Cat’s Scarlet Tour. The 24-date tour will kick off on Halloween, Oct. 31, at San Francisco’s Chase Center and hit major cities across the U.S. before wrapping Dec. 13 at Chicago’s United Center.

The Scarlet Tour is in support of Doja Cat’s forthcoming fourth studio album, Scarlet, set for release Sept. 22. So far, the album has yielded a pair of Billboard Hot 100 top 40 hits: “Attention” (No. 31) and “Paint the Town Red,” which recently became the first rap song to hit No. 1 in more than a year (chart dated Sept. 16). A promotional single titled “Demons” arrived earlier this month (Sept. 1) alongside a Christina Ricci-starring music video.

Suga Reveals BTS’ ‘Tear’ Was Written Amid Thoughts of Breaking Up: ‘We Were Like, ‘We Can’t Do This”

BTS is one of the world’s biggest music groups, but things among its seven members haven’t always been smooth. In the Monday (Sept. 11) episode of Suga‘s Suchwita drinking show, he and V spoke of the darker times the group went through, with V noting that his exhaustion led him to have potentially harmful thoughts.

Trouble for BTS began around the release of 2018’s “Fake Love,” when tensions and exhaustion were at an all-time high for the stars as they started to received international recognition.

“We almost didn’t release ‘Fake Love,’ right?” V asked Suga.

“We were like, ‘We can’t do this.’ As we wrote ‘Tear’ [we thought], ‘We have to write a song like this … let’s write a song for our members.’ On the outside, ‘Tear’ is about a breakup between lovers, but actually ‘Tear’ was a message to the members [who considered disbanding],” Suga revealed.

He continued, “As we worked on the Love Yourself: Answer album, we were talking through contract renewals, then — as Namjoon [RM], J-Hope and I were writing ‘Tear’ — we sent a long text saying ‘Love you guys’ to you and Jung Kook.”

V recalled the sweet message and said it gave him and Jung Kook a push in the right direction. “After seeing that, Jung Kook and I found the will to continue. We got to think positively,” he added.

Demi Lovato Wants to Marry Boyfriend Jutes: ‘We’ve Talked About It’

“I’m in an amazing relationship. My boyfriend is a year older than me, and we’re growing together and it feels so healthy,” they told the radio host. “We actually met in the studio. So he’s an artist, but he’s also a songwriter. He came in to write on one of my sessions and I was in the studio and was immediately attracted to him. I like texted my friends on the side and was like, ‘He’s so hot!’”

Lovato added that Jutes has “the best personality” and confirmed to Stern that they hope to marry him at some point. “We’ve talked about it,” the “29” singer explained. “It’s been about a year and a half [of dating], so we’re taking our time with it a little bit, you know? I think it’s important not to rush that.”

They continued, “We started off as friends, and we built that foundation of friendship first. There’s this partnership there that is just so magnetic, and the way that we laugh together — it’s just nonstop. I think if you can find someone that makes you feel safe, that you’re so attracted to, that you laugh with constantly, that’s the formula of a really great relationship.”

Lovato also confirmed that they “definitely” want children with Jutes, and that the artist helped them heal their longtime daddy issues. “I can say with confidence that my daddy issues aren’t anything that are inside of me anymore,” the star explained. “I think there’s a few signs to that. I’m with a partner that is my age, essentially. I look back on the past [of dating older men] and think ‘that’s gross.’”

Lovato’s relationship with Jutes marks their first public romance since breaking off their engagement to actor Max Ehrich in September 2020. For his part, tattooed indie artist Jutes helped write multiple songs on Lovato’s most recent album Holy Fvck, including second single “Substance” as well as “Happy Ending” and “City of Angels.”

The couple made their relationship Instagram official in August 2022. Listen to Lovato’s full interview with Howard Stern here.
