Olivia Rodrigo Performs ‘If It Makes You Happy’ With Sheryl Crow, Debuts ‘Lacy’ & ‘Making the Bed’ Live

Six years before Olivia Rodrigo was born, Sheryl Crow‘s “If It Makes You Happy” was charting in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. Decades later, the hit singer-songwriters got together at Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe for a duet of Crow’s ’90s hit.

“pinch me! sang one of my favorite songs of all time with the greatest of all time @sherylcrow !!!! what an honor!!!!” Rodrigo wrote on Instagram, where she shared a photo with Crow and a video of their “If It Makes You Happy” performance, on Friday night (Sept. 29).

“Funnest day ever with the amazingly brilliant @oliviarodrigo! What a talent!! And the loveliest young woman!” Crow said, sharing Rodrigo’s post on her Instagram page.

A video shows the pair harmonizing on the chorus: “If it makes you happy/ It can’t be that bad/ If it makes you happy/ Then why the hell are you so sad?”

Rodrigo, guitar in hand, also performed the Guts ballad “Lacy” live for the first time during her appearance at the Bluebird Cafe, as well as the album’s lead single “Vampire” on piano. She also debuted “Making the Bed” (also from Guts) live on piano.

Crow and Rodrigo connected last year at Billboard‘s 2022 Women in Music event, where Rodrigo was presented Woman of the Year by Crow, who praised the example Rodrigo is setting for her generation of artists. “When I came up, women were struggling to be the architects of their own careers,” she said. “So when I see someone like our Woman of the Year Olivia Rodrigo having such incredible success at such an early age, I am blown away.”

“I am such a massive fan of you and your songwriting,” Rodrigo gushed at the time. She noted, “It’s not always easy being a young woman in the music industry, but I’ve found so much strength from the female songwriters who have come before me and paved the way and opened doors for so many young women like me.”

Donald Trump Shares His Thoughts in on Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce Rumored Romance

Donald Trump is giving his two cents on the rumored romance between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.

During an interview with the Daily Caller, the former president was asked for his take on the possible romance between the pop superstar and Kansas City Chiefs tight end.

“I wish the best for both of them. I hope they enjoy their life, maybe together, maybe not — most likely not,” Trump said during the sit-down, which was published on Friday (Sept. 29).

Last weekend, Swift made waves when she attended the Chiefs’ football game against the Chicago Bears in light of her rumored romance with Kelce.

The NFL star’s ongoing courting of the “Anti-Hero” singer began in July, when he tried (and failed) to hand her a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it during her Eras tour stop in Kansas City. He then invited Swift to a football game, which she accepted on Sept. 24, when she shocked football fans and Swifties alike after cheering on the tight end from Kelce’s suite alongside his mom, Donna, as the team beat the Bears.

The pair also left the stadium together, as seen in a clip sports reporter Jarrett Payton shared on X. Kelce and Swift were then spotted riding off together in his convertible, according to photos acquired by TMZ.

NBC also used Swift’s “Welcome to New York” in a TV commercial promoting the Chiefs’ game against the New York Jets on Sunday (Oct. 1). The singer is rumored to be attending the game at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

Jada Pinkett Smith Speaks Out After Tupac Shakur Murder Arrest: ‘Now I Hope We Can Get Some Answers’

Jada Pinkett Smith is reacting the arrest of a suspect in connection with the murder of Tupac Shakur.

The Emmy-winning actress and talk show host took to her social media on Friday (Sept. 29) to speak out following news that Las Vegas police arrested Duane “Keffe D” Davis in connection with the drive-by shooting of the iconic rapper, who died on Sept. 13, 1996.

“Now I hope we can get some answers and have some closure. “R.I.P. Pac,” Pinkett Smith wrote on her Instagram Stories, adding a dove emoji.

The Girls Trip star’s post arrived hours after after Davis, 60, was arrested and charged with the high-profile murder on the Las Vegas strip, which has been the subject of numerous documentary films, investigative TV series, books, and theories about who gunned down the then-25-year-old MC.

Pinkett Smith had a close relationship with the rapper for many years. Since Tupac’s passing, she has often relived her memories with him in front of the public. In 2017, Pinkett Smith revealed that she was a drug dealer when she first met the rapper, and in 2021, she shared an unpublished poem from the “Dear Mama” rapper.

While Pac was alive, Pinkett Smith appeared in his “Keep Ya Head Up” and “Temptations” music videos, and covered $100,000 for his bail after he was convicted for sexual abuse. While the two stars never officially dated, their incredibly close friendship has become a point of public debate, especially in light of her and Smith’s “entanglement” controversies.

Earlier this month, Pinkett Smith shared an adorable throwback video of her and Shakur lip-syncing to  DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince’s 1988 hit single “Parents Just Don’t Understand.”

“Not in a million years would I have dreamed that the Fresh Prince and I would become, um, very acquainted. Not in a million years did I imagine three lives, their fates, would be so intertwined,” she wrote on Instagram. “And… I never would have imagined that this video would become a tangible memory, of the last time Pac and I, were simply kids together. Pac and I lip syncing Parents Just Don’t Understand by Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince during our Junior year in high school. Who would have thought?”

The caption is believed to be an excerpt from Pinkett Smith’s forthcoming memoir, Worthy, which is slated for release on Oct. 17.

Britney Spears Says She’s Taking Her Divorce From Sam Asghari ‘One Day at a Time’

Britney Spears is trying to stay positive following her divorce.

On Friday night (Sept. 29), the 41-year-old pop superstar took to Instagram to share a lengthy message of gratitude in which she reflects on her split from Sam Asghari.

“I’m in such a beautiful location !!! l’m so lucky to have amazing friends !!! Positive affirmations are important to me at the moment !!!” Spears wrote alongside snapshots of herself cozying up with longtime friend and manager Cade Hudson, whom she was recently spotted vacationing with in Mexico.

The “Piece of Me” singer also touched on the difficulties of looking back on her past while writing her forthcoming memoir, The Woman In Me.

“I say this because I’m going through a divorce and having to reflect my past in a book was … let’s just say not easy !!!” she wrote. “I’m just saying !!! But I take one day at a time learning to breathe !!! Self love is so unbelievably important !!! I woke up and just cried because I felt grateful to be in such a beautiful place !!!”

Asghari, 29, filed for divorce from the pop star in mid-August. The former couple met in 2016 and tied the knot in a star-studded wedding ceremony in June 2022.

In her post, Spears also opened up about her presence on social media and using photo editing apps like Facetune.

“Then I thought about my relation between my life and Instagram at the moment !!! Let’s get this straight !!! It’s addicting … but in my personal opinion the moment you start to take yourself too seriously is when people quit !!!” she wrote. “Hey I’m not promoting FaceTune for the rest of my life but seriously when I have days of depression I look and see the new apps and it makes me feel silly !!! I’m like wow this is cool !!! I see things in a brighter way and so what if it’s enhanced !!!”

The singer added, “I’m just trying to understand people that say they don’t participate in it !!! Yet they’re on complete defense for some reason making accusations and downplaying it by saying all pictures are fake and are all retouched !!! Nothing is real … honestly who f—ing cares !!! If you’re so entitled and perfect why should you even care if someone is experimenting with apps on their phone ??? Why even mention it ??? If you’re so much better than that ??? But are you ??? Come on !!! I love my best friend !!!”

Earlier in the week, Spears worried fans when she posted a video of herself dancing with what appeared to be two large kitchen knives. The concern prompted authorities to perform a wellness check on the singer, according to the Los Angeles Times. Spears later took to Instagram to address the situation.

“I know I spooked everyone with the last post, but these are fake knives that my team rented from Hand Prop shop in LA. These are not real knives. No one needs to worry or call the police,” she wrote on Friday (Sept. 29). “I’m trying to imitate one of my favorite performers Shakira … a performance I was inspired by !!! Cheers to us bad girls who aren’t afraid to push boundaries and take risks!”

7 Best Moments as U2 Welcomes Striking Sphere Venue to Las Vegas

Billboard was in the orb for the very first night, and we’ve rounded up the best moments from the concert (and venue) debut.

Was it the hard-to-fathom floor-to-ceiling graphics? Or the way the immersive audio made it feel like you were in a recording studio with U2? Or maybe the way Bono carried on a seemingly intimate conversation with 18,000-plus fans?

It’s hard to pick the most impressive part of Friday’s (Sept. 29) U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere opening night — also the debut of the concert venue itself — but one thing is certain: U2 was exactly the right band to welcome the mind-blowing space.

You might think that all the technological bells and whistles could overshadow the performance, but U2’s music and message always remained the focal point throughout the two-hour set — even when a pop-culture kaleidoscope of images scrolled up the 366-foot screen in rapid succession, making it unclear if the floor or the stage might be moving or if your mind was just playing tricks on you. (That was during the Achtung Baby single “Even Better Than the Real Thing,” only three songs into the concert, and it was truly the most unreal moment of the night.)

But the real magic was often when the production chose not to inundate the full screen, pulling back with just a monochromatic blue backdrop or a starry night sky for quieter songs, or just projecting large images of the bandmembers during a turntable segment that will feature different non-Achtung Baby songs each night over the 25-show run.

In the end, Sphere never overshadows U2; Sphere magnifies U2, pairing a band that has attempted to innovate with each new tour over their 40-plus-year career with a venue that seemingly has no limits of innovation.

Billboard was in the orb for the very first night, and we’ve rounded up the best moments from the concert (and venue) debut below.

Also in the top 10 of the new Top Album Sales chart, new releases from Mitski, Demi Lovato, Dan + Shay, Thirty Seconds to Mars and Baroness debut.

Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.

The sales of the Who’s Next reissue was bolstered by its availability in multiple configurations. On the low end is the base original nine-track album remastered on CD, vinyl and digital download, up through a lavish $300 Super Deluxe Edition boxed set with 10 CDs, a Blu-Ray Audio disc, a 100-page hard back book, posters and other merchandise.

All versions of the album, old and new, are combined for tracking and charting purposes. In the week ending Sept. 21 in the U.S., Who’s Next sold 9,500 copies – up from a negligible sum the previous week. Of its 9,500 sold, physical sales comprise 9,000 (6,000 on vinyl, 3,000 on CD) and digital downloads comprise 500.

At No. 1 on Top Album Sales, Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts notches a second week in the lead (44,000; down 71%) after debut atop the tally a week ago. V’s Layover is steady at No. 2 (21,000; down 76% in its second week).

Mitski’s The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We arrives at No. 3 with 20,000 copies sold. It’s the second top 10 for the artist, following the chart-toping debut of Laurel Hell in 2022. Demi Lovato’s Revamped – a collection of rock reinterpretations of her previously released songs – bows at No. 4 with 11,000 sold, giving the singer her ninth top 10 (the entirety of her charting efforts). Dan + Shay’s new studio album Bigger Houses moves in at No. 6 with nearly 11,000 sold, marking the fifth consecutive and total top 10 for the duo.

Thirty Seconds to Mars’ first studio album in over five years, It’s the End of the World But It’s a Beautiful Day, debuts at No. 6 with nearly 10,000 sold. It’s the third top 10 set for the rock act, who was last on the chart with the 2018 studio set America (No. 2 debut and peak).

Rounding out the debuts in the top 10 is Baroness’ latest album Stone, which starts at No. 7 with nearly 10,000 sold. It’s the second top 10-charting title for the act, following 2019’s Gold & Grey (No. 5 debut and peak).

Taylor Swift’s former No. 1 Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) falls 5-9 on Top Album Sales (9,000; down 4%) and NewJeans’ chart-topping 2nd EP ‘Get Up’ descends 6-10 (8,500; down 3%).

In the week ending Sept. 21, there were 1.670 million albums sold in the U.S. (down 5.4% compared to the previous week). Of that sum, physical albums (CDs, vinyl LPs, cassettes, etc.) comprised 1.336 million (down 7%) and digital albums comprised 334,000 (up 1.6%).

There were 574,000 CD albums sold in the week ending Sept. 21 (down 11.4% week-over-week) and 752,000 vinyl albums sold (down 3.4%). Year-to-date CD album sales stand at 25.049 million (up 0.9% compared to the same time frame a year ago) and year-to-date vinyl album sales total 33.412 million (up 19.9%).

Overall year-to-date album sales total 72.266 million (up 6.4% compared to the same year-to-date time frame a year ago). Year-to-date physical album sales stand at 58.848 million (up 10.9%) and digital album sales total 13.418 million (down 9.8%).

Becky G Talks New Album ‘Esquinas,’ A Proud ‘200 Percenter’s’ Journey into the Heart of Mexican Music

From a rapper to a reggaetón-pop hitmaker, Becky G‘s musical journey has been nothing short of eclectic. On Friday (Sept. 29), the artist unveiled a new chapter in her ever-evolving career, as she dropped the mesmerizing Mexican music album Esquinas — a sincere exploration of her identity as a proud “200 percenter”: 100% Mexican, 100% American. Her third studio album is a tribute to her roots, and a celebration of her identity.

Growing up in Inglewood, Calif., Becky G found inspiration in the rich tapestry of regional Mexican music, a source of deep connection since childhood. Her musical tastes, spanning from R&B to country to rancheras, led her to declare herself a genre-defying artist. “Music is a universal language — it feels limitless, it feels like I can create with intention, no matter the sound, no matter the language,” she tells Billboard Español.

With Esquinas, she embarks on a journey of rediscovery, delving into her Chicana roots, a tribute influenced by her abuelitos who encouraged her to explore regional Mexican music. It’s a full-circle moment where her diverse influences coalesce into a heartfelt homage to her heritage.

Featuring classic música mexicana covers, and an impressive cast of guests including Yahritza y Su Esencia, Ivan Cornejo, DannyLux, Peso Pluma and more, the album beautifully encapsulates her identity— a convergence of cultures, languages, and flags — at the crossroads of her rich and diverse experiences.

Becky G sat down with Billboard Español to discuss this new project.

You debuted as a rapper, then you became a reggaetón-pop hitmaker. Today you released a regional Mexican music album.

It’s been quite the journey, girlfriend. Para mí desde niña la música regional siempre me inspiraba (Since I was a little girl regional Mexican music always inspired me). I grew up listening to all kinds of music in English and Spanish: from R&B, country, reggaetón and rancheras — and everything in between. I consider myself a genre-less artist, and I love that about my creativity. I’ve even done a K-pop fusion.

Music is a universal language. It feels limitless — it feels like I can create with intention, no matter the sound, no matter the language, si es en español, o si es en inglés (be it in Spanish, or be it in English.)

How did you come up with the title, Esquinas?

I’ve always felt like I’m not this side or that side of the street. I am literally la esquina (the corner). La esquina is where those cross streets meet — where those two languages, those two flags, and the two cultures [reside.] When I close my eyes and I think of what I experienced in my culture growing up, to capture that essence as close as I can to when I was a little girl is really important to me. Even the city that I grew up in is changing so much. So it’s a very intentional body of work, from the visuals and song selections to all of the collaborators. [Producer and songwriter] Edgar Barrera is family to me, and he really helped create a sound that represents me in this space. I feel like you can really hear me and see me in this album.

You’ve pulled up some amazing guests on your new album: Peso Pluma, Gabito Ballesteros… How do you select who to collaborate with?

Going back to creating something of our own as 200 percenters… There is this wave of fresh and authentic artists in the regional space, and we’re not necessarily erasing our traditions; we’re embracing tradition as well as giving it our own new school flair. I had my heart set on artists who interpret regional music in their own way, because I think that’s really how we’re going to continue to evolve and introduce it to the world. Obviously, it’s been around forever, but that was my intention.

When I worked with Peso y estuvimos en el estudio (and we were at the studio), we didn’t really have intentions. It was just to introduce each other. Then Edgar [Barrera] whips out a guitar, and next thing you know, we wrote [“Chanel”] in 45 minutes, así de la nada (just like that out of nowhere). It was instant chemistry between Peso and I. One of my favorite memories is working with Ivan Conejo on our song [“2ndo Chance”]. He almost canceled the studio session, ¡le tocó los nervios! (He got nervous!) He’s like, “I feel a little bit of pressure. I want to do a really good job. I’m going to be going on my first tour, and I just don’t want to let you down.” I was like, “Bro, you could literally come and we can eat In-N-Out and just hang. We don’t have to write anything. Let’s just vibe.” Then one thing leads to another and you start creating these beautiful friendships.

There are also a few Mexican oldies but goodies in the album.

Like any traditional regional project, you want to have some covers on there. I personally selected the covers that I did for the album. They either take me to a point in time in my life that remind me of my childhood or have such a deeper significance, even before I ever existed. One of those is “Cruz de Olvido.” It’s a song that my papi (grandpa) dedicated to my grandma when he was crossing over from Mexico to the United States. My grandma had her sons, she was left behind by the love of her life, so he could hopefully establish a better life for them — and to eventually cross them over as well.

“Cruz de Olvido” is one of the first mariachi songs that I ever learned. I have a video of me singing it to my papi on his birthday. I’m 12 years old, singing it in the front of my papi’s house in Inglewood. He is no longer here.

Stepping into this project, what did you rediscover? How did you reconnect with your heritage?

The essence of me being Chicana, born and raised in Inglewood, and being very proud of my Mexican roots, that’s always been there. Maybe it wasn’t at the forefront of my [creative work] or aesthetics. But as far as my essence and my being, I am who I am because of the culture that raised me. I’m very lucky to have had my abuelitos. All four were very present in my life for most of my childhood. Two years ago, when I lost my papi, my abuelito… he was kind of the catalyst as to why I decided it was time to do the project, because it has been a dream of mine since I was little. Yo siempre hablaba con ellos, they would be like, “mija, ¿y cuándo [harás] música regional? Es que cantas muy bonito cuando cantas con mariachi” (sweetheart, when will you [make] regional music? You sing very beautifully when you sing with mariachi). My grandma would make fun of me because when I would rap, she was like, “Ay mija, ¿por qué tan enojada?” (why so upset?) I’d be like, “Because I got s–t to say, grandma.” It’s so beautiful now. It feels very full-circle. It definitely feels like it’s a part of my soul when I sing música regional mexicana

I remember watching you live at a Mexican festival a few years ago, and you said something beautiful: “I love my life in between two worlds representing two flags.” You are a proud 200 percenter. What does that mean?

I remember there was a moment in my life when I was like, “Man, 50/50 doesn’t cut it. Why do I have to give up half of myself to be accepted here, and then vice versa?” It doesn’t do what I feel in my heart justice to just cap it at 50% here, and 50% there. I’m 100% proud to be from Inglewood, but I’m also 100% proud to be Mexicana, to be Latina. I want to consider myself 200%. I feel like it’s something that a lot of youth who grew up in mixed ethnicity households can identify with.

I have friends who are Asian-American, African-American, and they’re like, “Girl, I hear all the time, I’m not enough this, or I’m not enough that.” [I wanted to] create a space for ourselves to be who we are, authentically. And as time goes on, hopefully the next generations can get more inspired to understand that nunca es tarde, it’s never too late to learn more about where we come from. For me, ser latina es más que hablar el idioma (to be Latina is more than to speak the language). I am so pocha (Mexican-American), and probably forever will be, but I’m going to own my pocha power. The fact that I can think in hybrid is really cool.

Paramore Celebrates 14th Anniversary of ‘Brand New Eyes’ — by Cutting Out Ex-Members From Group Photo

Birthday messages are in order for the members of Paramore! The trio — which consists of lead singer Hayley Williams, drummer Zac Farro and guitarist Taylor York — celebrated the 14th anniversary of its third studio album, Brand New Eyes on Friday (Sept. 29) with a dash of shade directed to two of the band’s former members.

“HBD, BNE,” the group wrote via X, formerly known as Twitter, captioning a visibly cropped photo of Williams, Farro and York. Ex-bandmates Josh Farro and Jeremy Davis, who originally appeared to the left of the lead singer and right of the drummer, were cropped out of the photo.

The Farro brothers left Paramore in 2010, with Josh citing in a blog post that the rest of the band was treated differently than Williams and were “riding on the coattails of ‘Hayley’s dream.’” Davis left the band in 2015, and filed a lawsuit in 2016 against the band claiming he was a partner in Varoom Whoa, the legal entity owned by Williams that operates the band’s business. In 2017, Zac rejoined the band, and later that year, Paramore’s suit with Davis was settled.

Released on Sept. 29, 2009 via Fueled by Ramen, Brand New Eyes marked Paramore’s third studio album. The set became the Paramore’s first album to hit the top 5 of the Billboard 200 chart following the release of the band’s commercial breakthrough with RIOT! — which spawned the band’s signature single “Misery Business” — two years prior. Brand New Eyes peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and spent a total of 59 weeks on the all genre tally.

Of the five total singles that came from Brand New Eyes, “Ignorance” and “Careful” charted on the Billboard Hot 100 at Nos. 67 and 78 respectively.

Doja Cat Earns 10th Rhythmic Airplay No. 1 With ‘Paint the Town Red’

Doja Cat’s “Paint Town the Red” becomes her 10th No. 1 on Billboard’s Rhythmic Airplay chart, rising 2-1 on the survey dated Oct. 7.

The song is Doja Cat’s first No. 1 on Rhythmic Airplay since “Vegas,” which reigned for a week in November 2022.

Between “Vegas” and “Paint the Town Red,” she reached the tally with “Attention,” which peaked at No. 25 in July.

Doja Cat first ruled Rhythmic Airplay with “Say So” in 2020, meaning each of her 10 No. 1s has occurred in the 2020s (only Drake, with 12 in the ’20s, has more). She becomes one of just 11 acts to nab at least 10 No. 1s on Rhythmic Airplay in its 31-year history. Drake leads all acts with 38 toppers, while Rihanna rules all women with 17 leaders.

Concurrently, “Paint the Town Red” rises 9-7 on Pop Airplay and debuts at No. 38 on Adult Pop Airplay. It also appears at No. 3 on Rap Airplay, No. 15 on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, No. 16 on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay.
